Reviews (page 11 of 14)
Some catchy tunes. Most of the vocals I enjoyed were the back up vocals and Rihanna.
I liked Power and Monster. The rest was okay. Kanye's earlier stuff is better. 3/5
I know that his music/sound was ground breaking, but it isn’t my thing. I prefer old-school rap, 80’s - early 90’s. There are a few songs that I didn’t mind, but I don’t prefer music with such blatant themes.
I loved it at first but with each listen it wears me out a little more
It is alright, my fav song is all of the lights. Although I have to say, this album made me listen another album of his, Yeezus. In that album I fell in love with New Slaves song.
Good Album, feels a bit dated now
All of the Lights ist trotzdem auf der Alltime Favorite Liste :)
Kanye’s last very good album. 7.3/10
MBDTF is seen as Kanyes magnum opus, a perfect 10/10 through and through. I have to disagree heavily: First of all: The Collage Dropout is Kanye's best album, secondly is this album not close to a 10. Dark Fantasy is a great opener but at least for me gets annoying after the fifth "Can we get much higher"; Gorgeous is just not that interesting in general; POWER is great and the best song on the album it's a perfect song; All of the Light's has a terrible delivery from Kanye... it's only good for the Rhianna chorus; Monster is quite good; So Appalled is just annoying af because of the repetitive Swizz Beatz part; Devil in a New Dress is good but overrated; Runaway isn't even halfway interesting (and that comes from someone who's favourtite songs are all 10min+) and after that it's just bad... The production is really great although it has some flaws... all in all: starts good gets mid fast ends bad Songs I liked: POWER, Monster, Dark Fantasy Songs I didn't like: So Appalled, Hell of a Life, Blame Game, Lost in the World Rating: very light 6 (maybe even a 5) I know I look like a Fantano stan but this is one I actually agree with him
While I can recognize that this is a good album. It just really isn't for me. I can't stand Kanye West. I usually have no problem separating the art from the artist. It's really hard to do with Kanye West because so much of his art is about him... So I can't really do that. And I do not care for him. And i know he's only gotten worse since this album came out. What with all the antisemitism.
Haven't listened to 'Ye but this is very well done.
Pretty good in parts, great production but he's turned into such a terrible person the self aggrandising lyrics wear thin sooner/more than they might otherwise. Take your meds, Kanye.
Great intro to Kayne. I knew a few hits, but this is my first deep dive into an album. Having a son that loves his music made this more fun for me. Almost a 4, but just won’t be something I pull up and listen to as often as would a 4. 3.75.
The production carries on the first 3 songs then the production falls off and Ye's rapping is too mediocre to save it, Runaway is also good. 6/10
I liked this a lot more than I did the other two times I tried listening to it— once when it first came and out and then a second time about a year or two ago. It’s not that I disliked it before; it was more that I didn’t understand the fuss (which sums up my feelings for Ye in general, at least before he became an insufferable media personality). Maybe it’s that I listened to it on headphones this time, or maybe I was more open-minded. It’s a great sounding album. Kanye has always been a gifted producer, and listening this time I can see why this was so beloved by the pitchfork crowd. It sounds like a rap album created specifically for a pop/indie audience, an album designed for wide appeal. I admit that the hooks can be very catchy, the beats are often creative, and the layering of samples and harmonies can be superb. My issue is that I still don’t think Kanye is a very good rapper, and he’s especially not as great or witty as he claims to be in all his bravado. This time I around I didn’t mind so much, but I was slightly irritated by some of his cringy punchlines— like ‘they forgot about two things, my black balls’ for example— and times when his rhymes are forced or repetitive (like when he repeats ‘power’ and ‘hour’ in the chorus to Power— once is cool, the second is too much— or the song where he won’t stop repeating something about seeing hands up at the concert.) The thing is, he brags about being the best but is constantly overshadowed by the guest verses. I was enjoying Gorgeous as a solid song with great production, and then Raekwon dropped his verse and blew Kanye out of the water. He brought it to a whole ‘nother level. Same with Runaway— good production, decent rapping, but Pusha T’s lights out final line is the focal point, the most memorable part of the song. Rick Ross, Nick Minaj, Kid Cudi and even Jay Z (another rapper I’ve always thought was overrated) all make memorable appearances that steal songs or at least match Kanye’s verses. I guess you could say Ye has a great talent for choosing collaborators who fit his songs. And I am impressed by the scope and ambition of this album, including some of the reccurring themes and topics Kanye chooses to rap about. I get now why people love it. But I don’t think his skills as a wordsmith match his ambitions or his talents as a producer.
Kanye definitely has a ton of talent in production. I find his mythos and brand insufferable. I usually try to separate the art from the artist but find it impossible to take Kanye seriously when he's still rapping the same trite lyrics about how everybody's blackballing him and telling him he can't make it, etc after he holds what, 20 Grammy's? Get real my man.
This one was okay. I liked the singles on it. The rest of the stuff was okay. I don’t think I’m a big fan of the heavily sampled, lots of layers style of music. Also, the ego is as offensive as ever. Goddam is this man full of himself
my midiful dark twisted fantasy
ye
Overstuffed, like a Marvel movie, with music that feels like CGI, and is clearly oriented to world domination through pop maximalism. There are moments of interest, (e.g., “let’s have a toast for the douche bags,” “Ima need to see your m-f-ing hands at the concert,” the edgy and extended guitar + cellos textures on “Runaway,” the combo callout of Black Sabbath and Bach on “Hell of a Life,” Chris Rock and Gil-Scott Heron) – but how could there not be given how much is thrown up here? The humor and irony (or intentional hypocrisy) get lost and a listener feels a little beat down (or over the head) by the ceaseless braggadocio, posturing and self-referentiality. A classic case of more being less. And in regard to the critical question, “Would you rather be underpaid or overrated?” this record more than clarifies KW’s choice.
first half of the album ftw
I wish I could go back to a time before I knew what a douche Kanye is and listen to this for the first time then.
Many "remixes" of older songs. I dont like drakes voice/singing. Also there is a lot of talking during the songs, which also makes the songs unnecessarily long
Alright not consistently good but has some bangers Favorite song: all of the lights
I missed out on the whole hip hop rap scene at the time when it was popular, and I know that many hipsters rave on about Kanye. To be fair, I listened to the album in full and thought it was quite well produced with much tamer usage of the N word that rappers at that time seemed fixated about spuing out in every line of lyrics. Enjoyed the album on this occasion, I will never listen to it again, and I don't get the hype around Kanye, but if it was already playing in the background it would be OK.
Better than I imagined but also sounds more dated than I'd imagined. Some of the lyrics are fascinating and others are grimy or disgusting. Not sure what I think. I definitely want to return to some of the songs. Not sure I'll be diving back in soon though.
While the album is very well produced, Kanye West has an annoying voice and some of the avant-garde samples are very repetitive and make my ears bleed. The song "POWER" has nearly a billion listens but I got so annoyed by the background sample that I stopped it halfway. The song "All of the lights" is the most melodic, the song "Monster" has a very cool vibe.
Knowing what we know now, I can hear the genius and the insanity in the album.
Kanye was good and this was pretty fire when it came out But in a genre that is not always high on my list and his being a kookoo i don't know how often I would revisit it
There were some good songs on there that we all grew up with. But some of the lyrics felt like just another platform for Kanye West to get his manic thoughts out of? Sorry not sorry
The devil's in the details. (Or a new dress) Kanye is excellent at production as always, there are a lot of fun sounds and dope features (Rick Ross and Nikki stand out) on this album and a great overarching attempt at a theme. It's undercut by 1. Kanye being excessively horny. 2. Kanye referencing a lot with little substance, specifically in regards to racism in America. (Call me Malcom West is uh, corny at best.) 3. He has these big ideas for theme that start out clever and fizzle. Like using the sample Still from Bon Iver on Lost in the world could have ended hauntingly and then just ends up being topic-less sort of dance number. You could argue some of the vapid lyrics are intentional, I don't really think that's the case. 3/5 Some of my favorite songs are on this album.
Intro is strong gospel ish Monster - nicki minaj So appalled - jayz, very tight lyrically Lags and lulls in the middle and end, feelin' this is a 3 Very well produced , but trying too hard
It's not terrible but also not good.
7/10, a good Kanye album that changed the game in hiphop but Kanye doesn't translate the trappings of fame in a way that I find extra enticing compared to his other material. It's a great album, but for Kanye not a masterpiece.
Not this guy again! This is better. The production is immaculate as usual. Lyrics are mostly gobbledygook
6/10
have heard this previously. a lot of this is great but i really wish kanye just. talked less. "runaway" is a good example, that song is great but both his verse and the guest verse i could *really* do without. the 3 minute long outro doesn't do it any favors. i listened to some of "the college dropout" recently and it was miles better than anything on here.
Had heard some tracks from this before, and overall it was a lot better than I expected, but wasn't anything special.
Interesting but not my style
A great album brought down by the casual mysogeny, being too long, and the presence of Nikki Minaj
It's creative and I enjoyed the layered music underneath. Rap just isn't my bag even when it's more enjoyable like this album is.
Started well, with songs I recognised, but then got a little boring as the album went on
Some of it is pretty good, but i don't think any of it is outstanding. Never really understood the kanye hype
mid
A genre that I wouldn’t normally consider listening to. Of course you would need to live on Mars to not be aware of Kanye West. Consistent quality is what I took from this record. Some brilliantly creative moments, even a King Crimson sample thrown in.
Just Kanye being Kanye.
Fantano was right imo
The best part of this is the guest stars. Ye is not half as good as he thinks he is, and there are way better out there. Stick to producing.
Not a Kanye fan, or a hip-hop fan in general, but this is one of the few records I somewhat enjoy from the genre. The production is great, features are really good, and I like the concept behind it. Runaway and Devil In A New Dress are amazing songs, and I love the King Crimson-sampling on POWER.
Ritmos hip hop para un estilo moderno. Canciones reivindicativas. Estilo rítmico y escuchable en cualquier ocasión
this seems like a smart guy talking about stupid shit
Kanye is a great producer but he is by far the weakest rapper and singer on the album
Hmm. Ordinarily this would be a 3, as it is pretty listenable and melodic. But I feel it should go down due to Kanye's repulsiveness and also the repetitive nature of his shtick. But some songs are good. Ok, a 3 it is. Most relevant line: "You've been putting up with my shit just way too long"
Súper energético, no puedes quedarte quieto mientras escuchas este álbum, te exige ponerte en movimiento
I KNOW THIS ONE! 'POWER' It's alright. The record so far has been alright to be honest. King Crimson. lol. FUCKING RIDICULIS! Well, well, well, could do with being about 15–20 minutes shorter. I also don't care and can't relate to a lot of the situations he's writing these songs about, but he's a good rapper, the beats and samples are good and the guest artists do their jobs well. 3 / 5 stars.
Pretty good album. I already had a couple of songs saved.
Album 87 of 1001 Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Blame Game Full disclosure: I did not go into this one with an open mind. Was always determined not to listen to him and had no plans for that to change...but here we are. Now I can say, - with a personal reference on which to base my opinion - I don't get the hype. Just a bunch of self-indulgence, in my opinion...and since it is all a bunch of self-indulgence, one would have to be inclined to possess a somewhat positive opinion of the messenger in order to be entertained. Maybe it takes knowing Kanye throughout his career. Maybe jumping in to this album first, this late into his game, causes something to be missed. Maybe not. I'll give it a fair rating out of deference to the masses, but I find no personal appeal. He seems to have more strength as a producer. When he actually tries to sing a melody, my ears bled. You can't accuse me of not sacrificing for the cause.
Turns out I do miss the old Kanye. This was good though, he's definitely very creative with his beats and sampling. Albums has several big hits. He definitely had a big impact on the game. Last album before he got so experimental and crazy. Probably in my top 3 Kanye albums?

Some classic Kanye vibes. Jay z ruined a couple of the track. Fave tune a devil in a new dress
For me Kanye West is too smooth when he does smooth music and not politically believable enough if he does more political stuff. But enough variation to enjoy.
Not much of a hip-hop fan but this album had some fun songs, personal favourite was runaway
B- Dark Fantasy - Kanye is usually the worst part of his songs and the best part of other people’s songs. This holds true. 3. Gorgeous - boring. The guitar riff gets pretty old by the third minute. 3. Power - 5. All of the Lights (Interlude) - 2. All of the Lights - 4. Monster - 2. Nicki bumped this down from a 3. So Appalled - 2. Devil in a New Dress - 4. Runaway - the guitar at the end sounds like the South Park sh** sound. 3. Hell of a Life - 2. Blame Game - “Yeezy taught you well” YIKES. This was so cringy. 1. Lost In The World - 5. Who Will Survive in America - 3. Returning to this anti-Semite’s album made me feel like Stan when he turns 10. Everything was so much shittier than I remembered.
What is the overall style and genre of the album? Rap. Again dont know genres well Are there any standout tracks or moments that resonated with you? Dark Fantasy and Monster were great, last track was great too. I always like when they save a good one to close an album. Bookending it like that always feels great. HATED blame game, even if that skit was funny (it wasnt) it went on for waaayyy too long. How did the album make you feel? Did it evoke specific emotions? Little bit of nostalgia. This album was big when I was in HS. Made me think of those days. Did you enjoy listening to the album overall? I did, few songs dragged. I would listen to it again. Probably would let myself skip a few tracks second time through though. Would you recommend this album to others? Who might particularly enjoy it? Yeah. Again I wouldnt be like check out this very famous album from 2014 but if someone said "I know nothing about Kanye is this album worth listening to Id say yeah. Misc Notes Best track: monster or dark fantasy Best line: too many Urkles on your team that’s why your wins low. Worst track: blame game what the fuck was that long ass skit with Chris rock? That sucked.
Another Kanye.. My comments on Yeezus pretty much all still apply here.
a one piece reference followed by an entire album of mid songs that go on for way too long. power was good, but we already knew that. luckily, it doesn't fall into the british music tier.
Leaving aside that Kanye has absolutely lost his mind on a public stage for the better part of the last, what, two years? It's a decent album. I was a big fan of Kanye's but fell off around "Graduation", so this is my first listen through of this. The production is, as always, immaculate, but certain parts can be pretty cheesy (let's just say the whole of "Blame Game", skit included). That being said, love or or hate her, this record introduced the world to Nicki Minaj, who absolutely slays a verse in a room full of heavy-hitters. This record has hits, just maybe some dead air in between. Favorite tracks: "Runaway", "Lost In the World", "Monster"
Low-key surprised by how good this sounds. Still, the lyrics though.
Okay, I guess. Nothing special, nothing bad either. Not my vibes.
Part of this album has really good beats and vibe but second half is downfall. Lyrics are not especially for me.
Actually liked this one. May have been got a four if it wasn't for some of the silly stuff.
Kanye has a song here and there that I love, but most of them are just terrible. I don't understand the obsession. His flow is just ok, his voice is annoying, and his beats are either fire or completely annoying no in between.
I enjoyed this more than I expected.
I listened to this album a lot when it came out, and there are a few tracks I don't remember sucking this bad. Especially the first two tracks. I really like "Blame Game" and "Lost In The World".
Better then expected
Great production and enjoyed many of the features. Interesting takes on the genre scattered throughout. Some of the lyrical content hasn't aged well.
NB
Don’t like him much as a person, but this album was okay
medio meh
p928. 2010. 3.5 stars Hip-hop/rap, so wrong audience, and comes with the usual foul language and misogynistic "lyrics" typical of the genre. Having said that, musically there is a LOT to like here - it's accessible, great hooks and faultless production. There's enough here to make me want to listen to his other albums, but I don't listen to those who admire Hitler. "Bitch I'm a monster no good blood sucker/Fat muthaf-cker now look who's in trouble"
Putting his massive ego and highly problematic personality aside (which is hard because he is a massive piece of shit) I can see why this is considered highly but it doesn’t move me
Umm, a lot of nostalgia from my teenage years with the lead singles, but I think he put out better work since then, even with Donda.
Better than expected
Hard to listen to this in light of his latest antisemitic hate speech, etc etc etc. In fact it colors it a bit, except for the fact that we've always know that he's an asshole. It's disappointing to know all that, when he's clearly such a talented producer and rapper, and in his best, most vulnerable moments the music is transcendent.
Full disclosure..this is the first time I listened to this lp beginning to end Ignoring Kanye’s current troubles, this lp touched on so many topics and feelings. What surprised me the most was how some songs started with a musical hook, and then BAM, here comes Kanye. A well thought out album. The POWER All Of The Lights videos are so good, and dramatically different It’s a rough listen, but I will go back and listen to it again, maybe back to front next time
Sounds the same way a teenager flexing in the mirror looks.
Ye, can you get please just stay in the studio? There is some undeniable talent here, even if some of that talent may be surrounding one’s self with others will talent.
It sucks that he is a douchebag because it is a pretty good album
It was ok
Not a genre I'm used to, but I still think it's very good. Strong 6 light 7
I gritted my teeth before pressing play - although this album was from 2010, I was still concerned. I found it very hard to disconnect what we know about Ye now and what/where he was then. I feel really sorry for him, he’s obviously going through a lot of stuff, and all while in the public eye. Doesn’t mean I like what he has to say even if he does say it in an impressive way. And he can’t sing. There, I said it.
Nicki’s verses were the best part
Kanye is not a great person and like other artists on this list, the album is reviewed separately from the cesspool of the person. There are several well known songs on the album. Some I had not heard before. Some that I don't need to hear again. Several of them just drag on too long. The beats are mostly great. The lyrics are ok.
4/5, kanye is an asshole tho
Good production and guest stars. Don't like Kanye himself.
this album was randomly selected for me on october 31st, 2022, and this was during the time kanye west made several public anti-semetic comments, not to mention other public incidents in the last few months. i hardly know of any of west's music, and i typically do have difficulty separating music from the artist. the album was better than i thought it would've been. there were some troubling parts that did not endear me to west. but so much of it was catchy. west managed to combine such a soundscape into one album, and the album works as a whole, reminiscent of other well known concept albums. in particular i loved the line from "power": "no one man should have all that power."
Musically, this album was interesting. It had some very progressive beats that all work really well together from an album perspective. I wasn't particularly captivated by the lyrics. I may be hearing this album a bit too late, though, because I feel like progressive rap artists like Kendrick Lamar have eclipsed Kanye in this realm, without being overly egotistical. Sidenote: The line in "So Appalled" dissing Donald Trump sure didn't age too well for Kanye.
Not my thing and we all know about the guy himself, but as an album I didn't hate this at all.
Not really a huge fan of this, it was alright. It is better than the debut and Yeezus (which are the only other albums I've heard).
Good album not really my genre of music but some great tracks i would check out again. I wouldnt complain if i heard it.
Didn’t finish listening, but much more interesting than the JayZ album.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Dark Fantasy (1) 2 - All Of the Lights (5) 3 - Monster (6)
3.5
Not my usual sort, I was determined not to like him based on his public persona. There were a few good tracks, they might grow on me
A 4-star start with a 2-star finish.
A bunch of bangers but too many meh songs to be 4 stars
Not bad. Was not expecting to like it... but rap has moved quite far from last time I listened to any.
LEgal
112 albums in and we’re onto our third Kanye album! Couple of solid bangers on here but the rest just blended in. 3.5/5
Once again, I mostly liked a Kanye album, though this one got a bit boring at the end
I like Kanye.
I can see why so many love this guy, but not really my thing.
I understand why he is more popular than the rest - his music is more approachable than most hip hop.
Not one of my favourite artists and this album do nothing to change that opinion. An okay album but just feel there are other rappers out there who have more to offer in terms of song depth and subject matter
Kanye really isn't my bag, but I gave it a try. I reached track 4 before I switched to different music.
Most of this genre sucks and I give them all 1/5 stars. I don't know what it is about Kanye though. This, along with several of his other albums are really great. I'm going to knock down a point just for the unnecessary language... 3.5/5
I was expecting something a little more introspective and subtle? 3 stars
Did NOT like this when it came out. I liked it better this time around.
There was more variety & depth to this than I'd expected but it's not really my sort of album.
Kanye no.
Let me start this off by saying that the 'Blame Game' backing track is a straight ripoff from Aphex Twin's 'Avril 14th'. Aphex deserves all of the recognition he can get, so shame on Kanye for not doing right by him. There is a lot to enjoy about this album, and I agree that it is the pinnacle of Kanye's career. There are some great rhymes and techniques at play, Kayne's production skills are on full display, and the collaborations are fantastic (especially Nicki Minaj and JAY-Z on 'Monster'). There are also stark contrasts between and even within tracks that seem to mirror Kanye's continuously tortured state. You've got a track like 'POWER' throwing bravado every direction it can but then culminating in contemplations of suicide. You've also got loads of lines about how they're "f'in B's" and then a seemingly apologetic track like 'Runaway'. It's been sad to see the steady decline of Kayne (at least in the public eye) and this album seems to do a decent job of encapsulating the conflicts that were at play within the man at the time. It is simultaneously resplendent, self-congratulating, chaotic and introspective. I still struggle to separate the artist from the art, so I'm sure that is pulling my rating down here, but the album was much better that I figured it would be, and certainly far superior to anything that Kayne has made since.
I think I've cracked my issue with Kanye. He's clearly an extremely talented producer and so he has this ability to make ridiculously catchy, epic-sounding tunes. But he ultimately undercuts his own genius because the size of his ego will not let him recognise that his lyricism and vocals are really quite mediocre, by far the worst part of his work (cringe-inducing comedy skits aside). I swear to god, if you just look at things like the instrumentals on "Power" or the Rihanna half of "All of the Lights" this is a four-possibly-five-star album. But Kanye is Kanye, and Kanye needs to be the centre of attention. He's made his own masterpiece tangibly worse by his need for personal glory and more than anything, it's really disappointing. Also that Chris Rock skit is fucking awful and it's extremely shitty that he tried to rip off Aphex Twin.
Great samples and production, but still felt rather soulless.
The first time I’ve ever listened to Kanye West with any real interest, and it was ok. Some songs were good, some songs were bad. Don’t see myself actively going back to it.
Yeezy’s production and beats are undeniably meticulous. His rapping is OK, but he’s no lyrical genius and there are some really lazy lines, the most glaring one being the ‘pussy in a sarcophagus, bruised her oesophagus’ line on ‘Monster’. Just cringe. The guest rappers and artists are better and provide most of the album’s highlights. Overall though, I find MBDTF way too bloated and self-indulgent to be considered a classic in my book.
Kjánalegt nafn á þessari plötu. Hún rennur annars ágætlega, ekki leiðinlegt en ég þarf ekki að hlusta aftur.
Some good beats, clearly setting a template for a lot of what we're still hearing now. Big stars too. He's an angry dude though, lost his sense of humour when he got successful
I have avoided this record because I always want to avoid Kanye. But if I’m being truly objective, there were several parts of this record I liked: Power, All the Lights, and Runaway in particular. I’ll take some solace in knowing that each song has about 10 people credited so who knows how much of it is actually his creation.
West has more of a reverence for his words and story telling than many of his genre peers. He makes the songs thoughtful. As someone who is not necessarily a fan of rap, I nonetheless enjoyed this
I’m firmly in camp 808s/Graduation, but this is also good. The features range from great (“Monster,” “Runaway”) to weird (“Lost in the World”), but the production is exceptional throughout. Kanye’s eccentricity is on full display here, bursting out in some great rhymes and ambitious creativity, but it’s a maybe a little too much “out there” for my tastes. I don’t see myself coming back to this. 2.5
Honestly, many Kanye songs are absolutely re-listenable. But while on some days this might be closer to a 3.5 for me, it got bumped down half a star because I have trouble reconciling his belief in his own genius with lyrics like this: "'Cause the same people that tried to black ball me forgot about two things, my black balls"
Never listened to Kanye before. Really Good beats and i enjoy melodic line of the rhymes. lyrical content i mostly ignored, didn't really interessted me.
Just not into it.
rap is really not my thing, but this was a solid album. Devil in a dress and Runaway were my favorites, great songs, really liked them. Monster was also fun.
Hate to say it, but its sort of nice listening on the side.
I don't like Kanye's personality but I have to admit that this album had some good production on it. But I enjoyed the guest singers' voices more than his own.
Surprisingly enjoyed more than I thought
Runaway and Power are the high points. Hard to separate the man from the art.
Ah, disappointing. I find Kanye the most entertaining when he’s producing garbage and telling me it the greatest music ever made. This was reasonably good. Not genius, but reasonably good. At least it’s not Chipmunk Crap or vocodered to hell. This guy is a joke to me, I would love to tell him that. 🤡🤡🤡
5 for music 0 for Ye
Musically pretty good. Good production value a lot of good use of instruments and effects. Songs are pretty mediocre with rich people talking crap about other rich people. Not rally my thing 2.5
Kanye's music largely passed me by in a blur over the last decade, so I'm pleased this was the first 1001 album recommended to me. It challenged me to dip into the Kanye archive post-College Drop Out/ Late Registration. Aside from 'All of the Lights' which I'd have had to have been living under a rock to avoid, there's essentially nothing on this album I recognise. Of course there's the unmistakable scattering of auto-tune vocals from Justin Vernon, the Bon Iver electronica, the customary hip hop sampling of Sabbath's Iron Man and cameos in a volume akin to an Adam McKay movie. But in terms of hit singles, radio airplays and stuff that might've seeped into my subconscious...nothing. Says more about me than the album, of course. But I've so often been put off Kanye's music by the hyperbole and absurdity that goes along with its release. In a way, this album reinforces my preconceptions. Everything about it screams 'Kanye', from the production to the occasional but desperately dumb lyrics. "Let's have a toast for the douchebags..." being a prime example. "I sent this bitch a picture of my d**k..." being another. In fact, ultimately what I realised is that I mostly like everything on this album that's not Kanye. Jay-Z brings some calm and class to two back to back tracks in the middle; RZA brings some proper hip hop flow. Vernon brings some quality and production innovation, whilst Sabbath bring a nod to heavy metal and even Nicky Minage brings...something. But Kanye just feels like the awkward and unnecessary spare wheel; which is quite the feat given it's his album. He's like the rich kid who's paid all his classmates to come on holiday with him. They'll all have a good time dining out at his expense whilst he spends the entire week whinging. Kanye's self-awareness has become beyond parody, and you can definitely hear and feel where the genesis for all that started in this album. I hope College Drop Out is in the 1001 list because I'd sooner be listening to and writing about that album.
Would give 3.5
I don't see it for most of the album but a couple stand out
The highs of monster were cancelled out by "Yeezy reupholstered my pussy"
Overrated. Cringe lyrics.
I like it, overall. Every element of his songs on the album sounds very good.
yeah this is smooth. A couple of songs I like, but i dont feel like listening through it again.
THIS IS BAD BRAINS - I AGAINST I
I quite enjoyed this but lost interest during the profane sex and "gangster" sections. Not what I was expecting - musically diverse. 3.5 out of 4
Not bad
Very well put together and an impressive roster of featured artists. POWER is the standout but love the autotuned harmonies on Lost in the World. Unfortunately much of the album lacked the oomph which would make me want to listen again.
Some good tunes, some awful tunes.
I think I like this... I think.
Okay I wasn't expecting to like this but it was really good?? Up through Monster I thought it was great but I took one star off bc it was so long
A couple of bangers on this album but other than them it’s pretty bad. What is it with really long shitty intros on every song which make no sense at all. 3/5
maybe 1 good song
Find es not bad at all.
Verstehe den Hype. Teile ihn nicht.
Not really my thing, but better than I remember.
Tracks: Runaway, Power, Lost in the world, All of the light
eeeeeh.
Bangers, but also misogynistic 😔
Yeh it was fine
What else do you want?
It's pretty good but I am not one of those people who views Kanye as a genius. Monster is a great track, but it's because of Nicki Minaj
Some really good beats. Some really bad singing. Some mediocre rapping haaaaaaaaah.
Not my favorite Kanye album. It's got two or three great songs and several...not so great. Compared to say Graduation, it's not his best.
такое
I liked this Kanye West west album. It featured many rappers that went on to become successful.
Music was surprisingly good. I was able to enjoy it despite not really being into rap all that much. The themes, however, were often questionable. Due to the latter, I probably wouldn't feel comfortable listening to it again.
B
Good until the times when it gets really weird and self-indulgent. Then it *really* loses me. But overall good.
Kanye is capable of creating some of the most stylistically repulsive music of all time, I truly feel like this album has not aged well whatsoever. "Monster", "Hell of a Life", and "Blame Game" are fantastic examples of gaudy production and disappointing lyricism. That being said, the album has high potential for hype aura moments if that's your thing. Highlights: "Dark Fantasy", "Runaway"
Does nothing for me.
Even in songs I remember liking, like Power, you realize it’s a mentally ill man who’s like lol who care if the president called me out, I’m just an asshole, drunk driving lmao. What a fucking loser.
Quite a fantasy.
nice listen but seems either overhyped or not my jam. Appreciation might also be influenced by what i think of the artist
4.5/10
Did I enjoy this album? No. No, I did not.
I don’t get his popularity. His lyrics aren’t impressive. His delivery is just ok. He does have a unique quality to his voice but most of his songs are dull. I can’t stand him as a human but wish someone would step in and get him the help he needs. Maybe he burnt to bright when he came on the scene but I don’t find him creative.
no thanks. It's some kind of refined plastic with no soul.
Sometimes I can separate the art from the artist but I just can’t with kanye
Jeg sier som Jon: Jeg skjønner ikke.
Not a huge fan of his music and I’m def not a fan of his as a person. DNF.
not as good as college dropout might have gotten a 3 if he wasn't a wrong'un but happy to mark it down
urgh, really all the worst people. Listening to this his weird pivot looks even weirder. But it really is a good album, its tough. But then the misogynistic lyrics mark it down for me.
-1 for the anti-semitism
the second album of this guy i had to listen to... again, a general critic of this 1001 album format. there are millions of albums, and i get it that this bloke "changed his style" on each album... a bit, but one album per artist is enough. The music does change, but his lyrics stay as dumb as before. It's the old "dumb people are confident, smart people have self-doubt" story with this guy and his "music"
not a big fan of Kanye's music so it's not really me
2/5
Purille lyrics again.
I might like this album more if Kanye wasn't on it... Some ok beats and production, but lacks music and a front person I'd be interested in.
jus not my style
This is an impressive display of narcissism and paranoia. I had no idea there were so many people after Kanye. Poor fella. The music? Ah, nice production and creative instrumentations and arrangements. The King Crimson samples demonstrate a good music knowledge. But then he opens his mouth and I have to listen to those lyrics. I'm out.
Just as dull as any other “modern hip-hop”
Some good songs but not my thing. Plus he’s a POS.
Overrated
Not my style of music but this was back when Kanye had some talent.
Never liked him, nor his music. Production is mediocre at best, and if intended, didn't work. Most of the lyrics are the way you'd expect from this kind of music, and I still detest it. There were some short, quite good parts, mostly when other artists were performing, so no credit to Ye.
algunas canciones estan buenas, otras no. Suenan raras
Some of this was ok but it just doesn't speak to me much. As others have noted the production is certainly very good. It does seem that Kanye gets a very high critical appraisal which I'm not sure he deserves.
Better than I expected
Nope
i dislike Kanye as aperson, the album exists
As noted earlier, artists of this genre tend to collaborate frequently, which is the case on this album. Even though there is a lot of talking, Kanye at least makes an effort to do some singing. There is more music here than any of the other rap albums so far, which is a positive. Still, it’s all so forgettable. 2.5 stars.
This is a good album. But I can't with this guy. Again. Worth repeating: Ye get your life together you fucking psychopath.
I found this one hard to separate the art from the artist. I despise Kanye West as a personality. I tried to go in without having a bias, and did appreciate both the music and his ability to rap, but the lyrics make this something I didn't like and don't intend to listen to again. Here's hoping this is the only time he appears on this list.
I really do try to separate art from artist when listening to these albums (although once again, fuck you, Brian Warner). Kanye, though? That's a tough one... ...thankfully for the bit of my brain that wants to instantly give the dickhead a 1/5, there's plenty for me to dislike. For a start, I don't much like his voice or flow while rapping and I genuinely cannot stand his singing voice. He's comically poor when trying to be melodic. Some of the tracks also do not even slightly justify their running time. The multiple circa 6 minute tracks rarely had enough ideas to support that. I hate skits and despite not generally disliking Chris Rock, I despised his nonsense on this album. I didn't mind a few of the tracks, I strangely liked Nicki Minaj's contribution (despite her also being an extremely problematic individual) and I like a fair few of the actual beats but all in all, I don't understand why this gets such praise. Even pre-Nazification Kanye wouldn't be something I'd want to listen to judging by this record. 1/5 for the human being 2/5 for the record (and that's generous)
Polished, stylish, well produced and eventually not my cup of tea.
Interesting. Not an album I would have listened to otherwise, but a couple of good tracks.
I like his style in some ways, but can't get past the raunchy content, even in the clean version.
It’s fine. Some really good classic tracks but I don’t think all hit the spot. Wouldn’t choose to have this on really.
413/1089 - Incredible. It switches between pretty great songs and the worst shit I've ever heard. A bit more garbage than gold on this one. For those into classical music, have you noticed classical fans talk about Percy Grainger the same way normal people talk about Kanye?
I tell you one person who’s had some beautiful dark twisted fantasies, Len Houmous. 2.4 3/13 Power
The production on this album is great, but it’s overshadowed by Kanye’s ego. I was rolling my eyes at his perceived slights and crude lyrical attempts before the second track ended. How many times can one person talk about balls and assholes?
This is decent... which is a shame because I'm not into praising antisemitic, Trump supporting, cultural narcissists. It can have a default 4/10 Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Default ★★☆☆☆ (4/10) Total reviewed : 244 Already owned : 56 Purchased : 12 To buy list : 4 Nope : 173
I didn’t like this quite as much as college drop out. The themes felt a little more negative. But I still love runaway and Nicki’s verse on monster is unmatched
no me gusta este genero
The 21st Century Schizoid Man sample in Power isn’t that good; you just like the original song
A 2 only for the song “all of the lights”
Meh, pretty boring. Really don’t get why this is so hyped, it’s like GTA music 3 / 10 Alright track: Runaway Terrible track I never want to hear again as long as I live: Blame Game
I think this guy has a really strong God complex. Not sure how that delusion can be justified.
He can rhyme, and create an interesting soundscape. But I don't want to hear songs with caricatures of the worst tropes of segments of society. If this were a movie, I would not want to see it, even if critics rave about it
Not my thing at all so I was expecting to hate it but it wasn’t as bad as I was anticipating.
A little all over the place. Not as good as some others in the genre.
Better than I expected
Musically speaking, it’s really above average. Sadly, the lyrics are typical rap garbage. And as a person who payed zero attention to this clown in his prime, I had no idea his vocals were so bad. Can’t hit the note, can’t hold it. Also, Trump’s butt boy. Fuck him.
Meh 😕
Found it difficult to separate the art from the artist when listening to this, but I tried my best. There are two very, very good tracks (Power, All the Lights), but almost everything else is absolute shite
I liked it one of Kanye's better albums
*A few great songs with otherwise bloated content, much of which is clearly for shock value from an all time terrible human
Meh when it came out. Even more meh now. Huuuuuuuge drop off from his first few albums.
Ei ollut mun juttu Kanye. Yksi biisi (POWER) oli mielestäni hyvä.
The main problem with this album is that its by Kanye West. That aside, it still sucks. The bad songs all somehow lasted ages whereas the alright songs were comparatively shorter unfortunately. I did myself the disservice of reading the lyrics and I was disappointed (but not surprised) to see exactly the sort of stuff I was expecting- bad language just for the sake of it and misogyny.
I'm finding it hard to separate my hatred for Kanye West from this album. Some songs were good, however some were awful. 2.5 rounded down
insanely good hip hop brought down by a massive ego
Not a bad album for kanye
I like other Kanye better. I like other music better. I think the middle school locker room aura has tainted the listening experience a bit for me.
Great beats but the flow seems ill-timed and just random over top
blegh
nice production, cool beats, good flow, but too self-indulgent. had to give up about 2/3 of the way through
Rap's Topographic Oceans album. Couple of decent tracks but then the rest are just bloated.
It started off ok. Not great and not terrible. A little disjointed as songs felt like they kind of got distracted or lost focus. It’s like the album is off its meds.
These things leave me somewhat disappointed, I get to hear modern masterpieces and it’s kinda middle of the road pop r&b/rap vanilla. It’s well produced but don’t think much of the actual substance of the damn thing. Don’t know much about him to be fair as artist or person, can’t say he hits me with any distinction vocal stylings and strike me as a bit well, ok, average, middle of the road pop. As said it definitely well produced and structured, which reading the comments is down to him. It’s supposedly raw and honest and personal but I found the content to be quite predictable, always the expected and cliched, the usual hedonism, celebrity, self promotion, American dream crap, me me yawn. It’s ok, I preferred his last effort I heard on here more, as it was less predictable, finding this one somewhat overrated, 2 Star.
Not bad but Ye is a nob isn’t he? Bit done with this now I don’t think I’ll ever listen to this again I haven’t finished it and don’t think I will
Kanye é péssimo no pessoal e médio no profissional.
- Ugh, yet another creep on this list. - Some interesting production and melodic ideas. - I don’t like his voice, so that makes his stuff harder to like. Also, the lyrics are all about him or his misogyny, so it’s a creep talking about himself. Pretty hard to separate the art from the artist when the art is about the artist. - This album felt way too long, especially the second half - the first half was way better than the second half.
Some moments but I just can't deal with all the self destructive bs posing as life.
I survived the listen. It’s ok party or club noise but the lyrics are pointless trash in most songs. Runaway is by far the most memorable. The rest was meh.
Fuck. The music and the production is incredible. Second to none. When All of the lights come on i get chills. MOST of the people he got to work on this were incredibly smart and added so much to this. Rihanna, Bon Iver. fucking nicki minaj. Don't even get me started. The rapping is absolutely dog shit. the lyrics are hard to listen to even without the foresight of 2026. The humor is completely gone, but he still delivers it like he is funny. but the worst is I hate this. I hate what has become of this legacy. I hate how much of a complete ass he is here and I hate how he became so so much worse. I just listen to this and think what his mother would have thought of all of this. It just makes me mad I can't listen to this anymore, and I am mad that this list made me listen to it again.
This is supposed to be the masterpiece everyone talks about? The legendary album that cemented Kanye’s legacy? Look I don’t doubt the beats here but every goddamn song on this album is about just what a shithead he is, unrepentant, unwilling to admit any sense of fault. In retrospect we all should have been willing to see through his bullshit right here because he does nothing less than admit to what a waste of space he is. But we bought it hook line and sinker. It’s competent and the beats are good but that’s all I can give it.
Meh - not the biggest fan anyway and the album feels long and bloated. Monster is the standout track, Runaway is now meme famous but so long and a bit tedious.
I don’t know if the story happened quite like this, but some accounts claim Bob Dylan kicked Phil Ochs out of a limo with the line: you’re not a folk singer, you’re a journalist. It’s a low blow, because nobody likes a journalist, and who, now, even likes Phil Ochs. I’m not sure what Dylan meant by folk singer, but in the years after that 1965 spat he did far more than sing Froggie Went A Courtin. His supposedly non-journalistic style ricocheted between confessional, surreal, spiteful. On Highway 61 Revisited - which we’ve already talked about - he was frequently cruel about his circle, his fans, his lovers. Yet somewhere in all that meanness and evasiveness he occasionally found something universal. A kind of reporting on his own life that, paradoxically, spoke to many. Kanye West, here, is neither folk singer nor journalist. He is - very much of the time - a blogger: oversharing, ephemeral, convinced of his own significance, demanding to be read. The idea that time has treated him unfairly - that the present Kanye has somehow contaminated the legacy of the 2010 Kanye - is wrong. There is only ever the present for him, and the material on this album is now stranded in the past, cut off from the only temporal mode he understands. His enthusiasms were fleeting. His collaborators of the moment. Nothing here steps outside of that moment. If you weren’t plugged into Kanye’s world in 2010, the whole thing now feels oddly weightless. And who would dare to care about Kanye West in 2025. There is so little reflection that there is no possibility of insight. On Blame Game he recounts events but never interrogates them, as though admission were understanding. On Toast the closest he comes to analysis is that line about sending an unsolicited photo, followed by a shrugging acknowledgement of incompetence with women. But he doesn't know why. It’s not introspection. It’s barely a diary entry. It's certainly not meaningful. West ends up reminding me most of Trent Reznor. Both are strong technicians and producers - the maximalist music here, certainly isn't bad, but the vocals are often muddy and that sample of 21st Century Schizoid Man feels anaemic beside the original - who nevertheless have to say something, so they drag insecurities and boasts from their private diaries. Reznor at least mined his teenage notebooks, so vague and raw that Johnny Cash could recontextualise them later, they were something listeners could inhabit. We were all teenagers once. Many of us while be old and dying eventually. My Beautiful Dark Fantasy exists only for Kanye West, and only in 2010. Some listeners will pore over it - as Dylanologists pore over arcana and Swifties build taxonomies - but West’s combination of vast ego and minimal self-awareness makes for a shallow puddle to stare into. It is a long way from Public Enemy - the Black CNN - to this kind of self-involvement. But it isn’t folk singing. Folk singing is for ever. 2 I have never listened to a Kanye West album before. I am of course aware of his status as one of Western Civilisation’s leading manchildren, but the only music of his that I know is Gold Digger. ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ is entirely new to me, excepting POWER which I recognise from somewhere but had never really listened to before. My first impression is that it’s an indulgent mess although I can admit a little surprise that there is so much attempted music splattered everywhere. Of course I was bound to say something like that because as I learned from reading a few critics on this album MBDTF is a ‘Magnum Opus’. It’s Kanye West’s fifth album and represents a synthesis of unique ideas and styles that the previous four records had been building towards. One does not simply dander into a Magnum Opus and expect to have a good time. You shouldn’t start your journey in Richard Wagner, for example, with Tristan und Isolde; it’s even longer than MBDTF and very difficult to make sense of. You’ll probably come out at the end, if you make it that far, and say, as Clara Schumann did after her first time, ‘Wagner is shite, folks must be on crack if they think this is good music.’ The Magnum Opus thing will be completely lost on you. So what should I do to get into Richard Wagner, you may ask? Great question Kanye West fans. I would point you to the Preludes first and a good Ring Highlights - Karajan’s maybe. There is also the Tannhäuser Overture which some would call Wagner’s Gold Digger. Tannhäuser is also a good start for the first full album/opera. You Kanye fans think you know hoes but if you don’t know Venus… Anyway when you finally make it round to Tristan and find that y’all feeling that shit - you’re welcome. 1.5/5
I feel like it's not for me. Sampling is interesting in times, but nothing keeps me going back.
Dark Fantasy 3 Gorgeous 2.7 Power 3 All of the Lights (interlude) n/a All of the Lights 2.8 Monster 1.3 So Appalled 1.5 Devil in a New Dress 1.6 Runaway 2.4 Hell of a Life 2 Blame Game 2.1 Lost in the World 1.8 Who Will Survive in America 1.6 Score: 2.15
So, he sucked BEFORE he went full nazi.
So when I saw this album as today’s selection I was prepared to do my usual when I get hip(perty) hop(perty) (c)rap music and seriously slag it off. I might be wrong here but I don’t associate Kanye West with gangster rap likely to shoot me in a drive by, threaten to burn my house down or sexually abuse my mum. This favourable impression was improved when I read reviews and the wiki entry. Couldn’t believe my eyes when it was described as progressive rap influenced by The Beatles and Pink Floyd. As a Prog Rock fanboy this did really prick my interest and convinced me not to be so dismissive. The album started well with some good melodies which was good but out of the blue came a King Crimson sample of 21st Centuary Schizoid Man. Unfortunately after this the album did degenerate back to your normal hip hop stuff. Apart from one or two Prog Rock style length tracks, as far as I could tell that was about as proggy as it got. Still, compared with the excessive number of hip hop rap albums on this list, I can safely say that so far this is my favourite which is meagre praise. For that reason it scores more than my normal one star. Album 700 tomorrow. Let’s hope it’s a good one. Does Steven Wilson feature at all on this list? 2/5 1/12/25
I like exactly one song from this album, and that's it. The fact that he's a loser and has a fanbase made of rabid bootlickers doesn't help either.
Look, it has some good songs, but not a single one is something i wanna hear again. Rap normally its not my type, but i like a few ones, and i always come back to it. But this one i wont return, i thing this one listening was enough.
Eh, the other one was better. Some decent enough tracks, but instantly loses a star for featuring Rihanna, drop another for being Kanye and there's not many stars I can actually give it. Does he show some self awareness in sampling 21st Century Schizoid Man?
I have a hard time separating the Artist from the Art on this one, didn't blow me away.
Doesn’t sound good now looking back after the person Ye has now become. Lyrics seem to be hitting out at a lot of people which scream a fragile ego
Meh
Meh... Overrated
TRI x HBB Kai.
This was ok, but I never was a huge fan of him. Nowadays, I am the exact opposite of a fan of this guy. But this album was ok.
2 out of 5. Not a fan and still not after this album. I get why people love it and on its own it does stand out.
Man, this is a tough one. I had to unblock his music for this. A very strong performance from a very unwell and bad person. Do you separate art from artist? It’s like rating a Chris Benoit match. No, I can’t. What would be a 4 star album (the Chris Rock skit is too long) gets a 2. Power is my favorite song
I don’t get it and I never will. That’s okay. You can’t get everything, where would you put it. The production is good
Kitchen sink production that is charming at first. Big, recognisable hits that are well-cemented into culture albeit through stupid online memes and the opening of Saints Row 3 are the reason that I know these songs. Outside of those songs, only So Appalled really appealed to me. As for the rest of the album? It's too long, too bloated, over-produced and grating at times. I can't deny the talent of Kanye's production but I really didn't care for this, it gets outright bad towards the end especially on Runaway and Blame Game, the former for the godawful vocoder outro and the latter for the skit at the end both of which compelled me to skip to the next song. No repeat listen on this one, I did not enjoy it. Highlights: Power, So Appalled
boring blowhard stuff
Ugly transparent and far too real. Just taking great production talented singers and musicians and letting your sweary rap loose isn't a great album. It's just very boring. Worst rap album ive had to listen to so far though clearly very expensively produced. Nothing raw, little to amuse, and full of egotistical rambling.
Power and Runaway are bangers, the album as a whole is way too long. Not going to actively revisit this one though because reasons
This is my first time listening to a Kanye album. I feel a bit mixed, the production if amazing but his flow has always bothered me. I'd say it was far better than I thought it would be but not for me. Ignoring the complete mental breakdown from him lately, I definitely can understand why this album is held in high regard. I think the saving grace for this album is there is much less Kanye on it than I expected.
