Pretty catchy songs - shame Kanye is a whacko, it makes his music difficult to enjoy

Last great Kanye album, such a relief to listen to something good (tried to listen to trout mask replica, last album i got). Every song has incredible production. Shame Kanye started acting out. Still really enjoy this. Maybe an unpopular opinion but i really like his stupid bars. Hip-Hop can be so serious at times, a little chessy and corny bar from Kanye breaks the tension very well. Nicki Minaj verse on monster is superb.

Thoughts before listening: I remember this being a really good album. That being said, Kanye is a major douche which makes it hard to enjoy his music anymore. Judging purely based on how much I like the actual music though, I'm sure I'll love this. Review: The music on this is awesome. Some of the best production of its era. A lot of the lyrics are cringey at best with Kanye really coming off as the misogynistic POS he would soon prove to be on a lot of the songs. Still though, these songs are fun to listen to, and I'm adding a few to the playlist. 4-stars.

Interesting mixture of sounds, but I couldn't listen long.

I knew this divisive one was coming. I listened to it thinking of how Kanye was at the time, not perfect but with more substantive and impactful things to say. Honestly, the sequencing of this album is phenomenal. Dark fantasy is one of the best opening tracks that comes to mind, and Lost in the World into Who Will Survive in America are a near-perfect pair of closing tracks. Every other song on the album is distinct and unique, with almost all being standouts. My biggest complaint with this album is that almost all of the tracks are 1-3 mins longer than they need to be. If the extra bloat was removed this album would be near perfect. That is except for the song "So Appalled", which is an incredibly boring and unnecessary track. All things considered, this is a strong album and deserving of a very positive score. 4.5/5 -> 5/5.

God damn I hate Kanye so much. It's rare I detest a musician but here we go. Even putting aside his recent mental deterioration, despite this album being shite I was pleased to hear some samples of stuff I like, including King Crimson and Aphex. Then I decided to read up on the album. Robert Fripp from KC quit the music industry after this was released a he had no say in it. Richard offered to redo the AFX sample as it was so poorly copied but Kanyes team said they own it now, not him, so do one. How do I give negative stars?

Purple Rose of Cairo is my favorite movie. Hard to reconcile that knowing the things Allen has done. It’s still my favorite movie, and the best I can manage to do is call it that and give it four stars in tiny protest for an incredible film. Dark Twisted Fantasy is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard. Incredible. The lyrics are clever, the orchestration is intense and complex. I’m listening to Monster now. Layers and layers of incredible wit and genius. Four stars because it’s Kanye fucking West.

okay i get why people meat ride for this for the most part. kanye is def the weakest part of this album but the choirs, instrumentation, the features are all great. stand out songs for me are runaway, devil in a new dress, all of the lights, and gorgeous. didn’t like blame game or the chris rock monologue.

Mutta melkein kaikissa muissa biiseissä on pituutta ainakin minuutti liikaa. Tälle voisi antaa vitosen sen takia, kuinka monta kertaa on kestänyt kuuntelua. Oon silti aika varma, että tää tulee olemaan mulle jatkossa ennemmin 4/5 levy, eli mennään sillä.

Olin joskus sitä mieltä, että tämä on kaikkien aikojen paras pop-levy. Ehkä en enää oo niin varma parhaudesta, mutta on tää parhaiden joukossa vähintään. Wanted to like this... but I didn't. There are definitely some catchy songs and musically it is quite good. I don't really like Kanye's voice and I couldn't get over that. I suppose the three side of 3.5.

Oh boy. The intro of "Dark Fantasy" and the entirety of POWER is so good that they single-handedly made everybody not notice the fact that the rest of this album is a bloated mess with some of Kanye's most cringeworthy lyrics. It's still pretty good, but not on the same level as College Dropout (his actual magnum opus) or Yeezus and Life of Pablo. And never forget - Kanye West likes fingers in his ass.

I was surprised by this. There is a lot of forgettable filler here, but “Power” alone gets it to a 3. I also liked Runaway, Hell of a life, and Lost in the world. 3.5/5

Bat shit crazy artist meets crazy good art. Like most people I’ve always had trouble separating the art from the person when it comes to this nut job. But objectively speaking this album was surprisingly good. A bit too long though. Cut 3-4 songs and the album would still stand up.

Like most people, I lost interest in Kanye sometime after this album. But the first five of his discography is pretty incredible, and it peaks with this album. Not typically my genre, but this album is just crazy good. And then he just went crazy.

Two things are undeniable: 1) Kanye is bat shit crazy with an ego the size of Jupiter 2) He is one talented and creative mofo. I absolute love the intro of Runaway. Also funny that he makes so many toasts to you in that song (and you know I’m talking to you).

Oh Kanye, you antisemitic, misogynistic, crazy-ass piece of shit... you had to go and make one of the great rap albums of all time. Hits from top to bottom. A crazy lineup of guest rappers, singers, and producers. One complaint is that it drags a bit towards the end with the John Legend song and that (too long) Chris Rock monologue. Otherwise...greatness. 4.5/5

Excellent album. Kanye is Kanye but he makes amazing albums and not just songs. This is before his work got more obtuse. Some great singles and an excellent cohesive sound throughout the album

ALL OF THE LIGHTS! A controversial album, from a controversial artist. Look, we all know I don't have to say this, but Kanye's always been a nut job. Even more so now, as he's gone bat-shit crazy, because of not taking his medication. Such a shame that instead of this, we get records like "Jesus Is King" and "Vultures" now. Hate him all you want, but the man has made, undeniably, 3 absolutely essential hiphop albums. Those being "College Dropout", "Late Registration" a more grounded and conscious Kanye, and of course "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy". This is the first time we see the ego maniac Kanye on an album. "Yeezus" would continue this trend where he would compare himself to Jesus, and declare himself a God on one of the songs. Amazing lyrics and bombastic beats a plenty! This album's concept is executed perfectly. The production on here is one of the best of all time, ever. Kanye and his team work wonders here, there's not one bad song here. I mean, some of the guitar riffs consistently give me chills, they're just so good. I also can't forget "Runaway", the *iconic* Kanye song, with an atmospheric distorted vocal solo at the end, and it transitions perfectly to "Hell Of A Life" too. The features here, such as on "Gorgeous", "Devil In A New Dress" and especially "Monster", wrap it all up nicely, with a bow on top. Everything lines up to create, dare I say, a perfect album, this is still Kanye in his prime. If I was restricted to picking one hiphop album to listen to all my life, this one would be a likely pick.

This is considered to be one of the greatest rap albums. There are some really good parts of, then Kanye opens his mouth and trashes it. He was pretty good producer, I will give him that. “All of the Lights” and the collaboration “Monster” are okay. “Runaway” is also pretty good. Overall, this album graced my IPad and probably will not be gracing it again.

I kind of stopped listening to Kanye as his craziness got louder. Or maybe because I got older. I really like College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation but kinda just stopped after that. I probably should have kept listening. This is a solid album. I'm likely to revisit someday. I did listen to Blame Game twice just for the funny Chris Rock bit at the end ("that's some Cirque du Soleil pu$$y you got there"). Anyway, Kanye knows his stuff.

Has a nostalgic enjoyment to it. Kanye's lyrics have never been the best, but I do still like this album and come back to it every now and again. 4/5*

I didn't give this album enough of a chance when it first came out. It's actually quite good.

Obligatory fuck Ye. But really, fuck this guy. This ain't even close to his best, but it's still pretty great. Top 5, give or take. Several incredible tunes, a bunch of good songs, some stinkers, overall it's great but nothing mind-blowing to me. Never understood the hype tbh. It is one of 3 most important albums of the 2010s (at least in the internet communities) along with TPAB and Blonde, I'll give it that. It would probably land in the 101 albums to listen to before you die as well, that's how massive its influence is. You should pirate it and listen.

This album is an absolute classic, and while I am rating it a 5... Kanye's music has become hard to listen to with his downward spiral out of control and becoming an insane dbag. I even sold off all my Kanye vinyls because I just couldn't keep it in my collection with the stuff he began saying. Hoping one day this dude gets the much needed therapy he needs.

i miss when kanye was just an asshole who thought he was a genius. this album is great, but a little self indulgent. runaway does not have to be 9 minutes long, or the weird gap between kanye's and rick ross' verses in devil in a new dress. still like a high 80 something though. maybe like an 87? 88?

I really don't care what this record meant at the time, Kanye West is a piece of shit and deserves whatever bad things happen to him. Screw this.

Let me get this out of the way: Kanye is a self-centered asshole. Always has been. I feel like I need to make this disclaimer every time a Kanye album comes up. But I really like this one. It's objectively full of bangers. It's also sort of nostalgic to me, based on when it was introduced to me (being 0% into hip hop prior to this). Easy 5* on the music alone. The outro of blame game is so weird (is that chris rock?). Also bon iver is in this album?! Highlights: dark fantasy, power, all of the lights, monster, runaway

Feels like a momentous record, even if it all didn't click with me on first listen. Dramatic, theatrical, with a fantastic list of collaborators. Is rap opera a genre? All of the Lights is a 10/10 single, including the intro interlude. Favourite tracks: Dark Fantasy, Power, All of the Lights, So Appalled, Runaway, Hell of a Life. Not perfect, but the highs are very high. Credit where credit's due.

It used to be a perfect album but maybe being a nazi ruined a lot of previously good things

I thought the first part of this album was very good, the 2nd half (after Monster which is an excellent tune) I didn’t vibe with so much.

I’m not gonna waste much time on this review. I got half way through and had to give in. The only decent parts are the samples taken from other songs. The rest of it is Kanye ruining a good thing. He’s an embarrassment to gay fish everywhere.

Not really into this music but some good singers and rapping and you start digging some pieces the more you listen to them. I like monster, so appalled, blame game and others.. Very cynical about women.

One of my fav, if not fav hip hop album. The way this album starts and ends is the reason for my perfect score. Bit of a lag in the middle for me, but I’m sure those songs are favs for other fans. One of the last Kanye albums I’d heard, and honestly should’ve been the first one. Gorgeous/Power/All of the Lights is a crazy sequence, and Lost in the World always gets me hyped. Very easy for me to throw this album on and vibe the whole way through.

Man, extraordinary fucking orgasmic production, ye really lets his heart out, but the misogyny really does detract from it quite a bit, and really reduces the odds that I would listen to this more frequently.

I'm glad we got this, I know a bunch of people who are OBSESSED with Kanye but I never got around to listen to him because he always gave me bad vibes. Well, time proved me right and he ended up being batshit insane and I have a huge problem of not being able to separate the art from their artists. Trying to be open minded and understand why a lot of people consider this album "the best ever made", I listened to it twice and spent a lot of time interpreting the lyrics and focusing on the songs. But I cant... The lyrics are just him being self indulgent with half assed rhymes and the sampling is very boring and repetitive. There's even a few times I thought spotify was being buggy because the sampling were just repeating weirdly. Some songs get pretty hype but it either repeats ad infinitum, or abruptly stops and you never hear it again, no balance in between. Some guest artists were pretty good too, but as soon as kanye start spouting shit, it gets ruined. Overall, the music is also not really intricate, but I guess its decent compared to most of modern hip hop, which is not saying a lot tbh.

This is a tough one for me. I can appreciate the artist but it is so difficult to get passed the man.

Fuck Kanye. Narcissistic sack of shit. This album is very good, some real bangers. But 1 star because his shoes suck and his public stances on white nationalism and antisemitism are reprehensible.

I feel like this is when rap started to get awful. Auto tune 😩. There were some pretty high profile producers on the album and it has its moments, but the whole thing didn’t really work for me.

The nostalgia that hits hearing dark fantasy start off is real. Gorgeous has some of the wildest Kanye lines referencing South Park fish sticks episode. POWER is still a fantastic listen on its own but flows well with the rest of the album. All of the lights is an all time rec room banger. Great transition into monster with a lot of other big rappers featuring getting their own verse. So appalled feels like a step down from the rest of the album. Devil in a new dress is made better with Rick Ross on the track. My god the piano intro on runaway. Could maybe do without the constant “look at ya” during portions of the chorus. Hell of a life distortion on the main beat is overkill. Blame game favorite deep cut on this album. Chris rock voicemail is funny from him but the girl only responding with “Yeezy taught me” is annoying. Lost in the woods has an amazing melody. Who will survive in America feels like a perfect closing track.

I loved this album when it came out, and I still love it. It goes without saying that Kanye is a controversial figure. But this album is an all-timer, and the first six tracks might be the most re-playable album leadoff in history. I was surprised at how the production sounded tinnier than I remember (not sure if that was lower fidelity streaming, or maybe it's just like rewatching a classic movie after years of HDR). This album is great, and as they say, I miss the old Kanye.

He's an egotistical god complex moron. That's probably what makes his music as enjoyable as it is. Still not my thing.

I hate to admit this was really good

I really wish I could give this a 3.5. It's varied and interesting and exciting. That said, I see glimpses of Kanye becoming who he is today in a few of these songs. Sometimes the lyrics feel weak. That said, even when I'm rolling my eyes at what he says, the composition of the cong always makes up for it.

Perfect album for tax day

it's really good. production is amazing. verses, while not *always* great (cough cough monster), i still think it's really solid. i just really wish this didn't financially support kanye considering what he's done lately.

It's alright

I wish listening to MBDTF didn’t financially contribute to Ye with all the bullshit he spews on the daily, even if it is just fractions of a cent on streaming. Because this album really is amazing. Power and All Of The Lights will forever be unreal bangers. Runaway will still manage to make me cry 10 years from now. Lost in the World is beautiful, powerful and soulful. Ye and his collaborators (except maybe Jay-Z) did an excelllent job portraying the lows that they still face at the top of the world. The isolation, the lack of loyalty, the ridiculous expectations. The production is obviously stellar as well. If you can put aside your reservations about Kanye West the man, you’ll find that Kanye West the artist’s greatest work is one of the best albums of the 21st century.

(NOTE: I did not stream this album. I listened to it via a CD I've owned for around a decade now. No money was given to Kanye West in the making of this review. Thank you.) Every now and then I think back to the review I wrote for THE COLLEGE DROPOUT and wince a little. Y'know, as much as I stand by a lot of what I said, there I hafta wonder, "Did I spend too much time calling out Kanye?" Like, "We get it. He's big divorced dad energy and loves Nazis. Do you **need** to keep saying you don't like him and 'Fuck him' and all that? You've talked about how much you don't like him as a person more than you have the damn music. You already gave an 'I don't condone him' disclaimer. What moral brownie points are you aiming for here, exactly?" On the one hand, I blame this on that album being my first Kanye review. I felt like I had to take the time to air out my opinions on the man. With how much he ends up talking about himself on these albums, it's not exactly an unimportant piece of context. Plus, it's better to get it all out in one burst at the start than to keep repeating myself over the course of the next two–even if I doubt most people outside of my group are gonna read my reviews, let alone in order. But on the other hand–and this is the bigger hand, I figure–I don't have much of an attachment to THE COLLEGE DROUPOUT. Preparing for that review was probably only the second time I've heard it in full over the course of a decade. Of course, then, it was really easy for me to get distracted from talking about the music to going on about something where I had more to say. Don't get me wrong, I recognize THE COLLEGE DROPOUT for its beatwork and "Jesus Walks" (even if Kanye's gone on to betray its message). But I just don't have that link that inspires me to write much about it. Unlike this album. MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY is home to my favorite song Kanye ever made, "Runaway". I love the extended "single note" piano intro. I love the beat it turns into. I love singing along to it. I even love the "I sent this bitch a picture of my dick" line for how memorably bad it is. And every other song on the album has its great share of beats, moments and memorable lines, too. "CAN WE GET MUCH HIGHER?" "Choke a SOUTH PARK writer with a fish stick." The whole ending to "POWER". Elton John's piano playing. "MJ GONE–A [n] DEAD." Nicki's verse on "Monster". "That'll be the same day MTV plays videos. That was a little joke–voila." That guitar line before Rick Ross's verse on "Devil In A New Dress". The "Iron Man" interpolation on "Hell Of A Life". "Avril 14th". The intro to "Lost In The World". None of them, though, compare to the second half of "Runaway". The entire vocal solo. That feeling when you want to express yourself, explain yourself ("I'mma be honest")... But you can't. And it can only come out as a long, pained, anguished wail that says more than any words ever could. It's beautiful, honestly. I get close to tearing up over it. And it's damn depressing with the context of 2024. I mean, let's be clear: it needs to be acknowledged that bad people can make good art. Just because Kanye turned out to be a piece of shit doesn't mean his old music is suddenly bad. Hell, he was a piece of shit back when he made this album. Remember the whole "I'MMA LET YOU FINISH" incident? This album was made following that controversy. And he's no stranger to controversy, of course–"GEORGE BUSH DOESN'T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE," after all. But when even the president was vocally calling him a jackass... You can view the vocal solo on "Runaway" as a reaction to all that. That he wanted to say so much in response, but ultimately couldn't. That he'd never be understood anyway. And in that light, this whole album is such an underdog triumph. That he was the world's public scumbag #1 and still came out with a critically acclaimed, world conquering smash. That success just feels non-existent these days knowing there'd be controversy following this album, and much worse controversy than stealing a microphone from Taylor Swift. MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY is a masterpiece. Kanye's absolute peak before he slid off, in my opinion. True, it's entirely self-indulgent in how damn long it is (see: Rick Ross's verse on "Devil In A New Dress", the "Blame Game" skit, etc.), and just because a lyric is memorably bad doesn't stop it from being... Y'know, bad. It's just all trumped by the fact that it's my Kanye album. The first one of his I've discovered. Where, more than once, I'd imagined one of my own characters screaming out the vocal solo in "Runaway". That aria of sadness and anger at how painfully aware they are that they're a huge fuckin' asshole. And Kanye is an asshole. A jackass, even. He was one back then, and he's an even bigger one now. But I'll always have this. Even if I don't listen to this album anymore because of how inseparable Kanye is from his music, he'll never truly take "Runaway" away from me.

Once again, I have an annoyingly deep connection to this album. Once again, I do find it to be a timeless classic. I still think that THIS version of Kanye West, before every single disgraceful and disgusting thing he's done and said in the 13.5 years since this album has dropped, is still pretty damn good; not as good as his College Trilogy work, and honestly for me, probably still not as good as 808s, but regardless... ugh, this album is another fucking 5. Yes, this Kanye certainly resembles a little more of the asshole he's become, but he was driven by that stupidity and that ego to create this piece of art instead of spreading hate. In that sense, I miss this asshole who tried to "redeem" himself by just making incredible music and not being a Nazi sympathizer for the fun of it. Still though; just classics on classics on classics on this one; Dark Fantasy is a stellar opener, and the 3-track stretch of POWER, All of the Lights, and Monster is such a ridiculous flex. Devil In A New Dress is stellar, Runaway will stick with me forever, and the 1-2 punch of Lost in The World / Who Will Survive in America is a great way to close out the album. Once again, I didn't listen to this album before giving it this 5, if only because I know it well enough to never have to give Kanye another dime ever again. It is once again, obnoxiously a 5, even if the man has dipped further into the negatives. So, uhh... this time, I chose to listen to Sean Kingston's self-titled debut album. I mean, honestly? Not bad. Pretty fun album; a lot of 2000s-era production quirks in there, some slang I wish we would bring back in the lyrics, and ultimately, some pretty solid vocal performances by Sean Kingston. It’s got some weird sampling choices, sure, but I feel like I’ve heard worse. A solid 7/10 album.

If we’re separating the art from the artist, this feels like an easy 5 stars. It’s definitely long, but it doesn’t feel long. This has always been my favorite Kanye album, but it also is the one I have spent the most time with. I anticipate seeing some of his earlier work on this list, so we’ll see if this remains the favorite.

I have never listened to a Kanye album, but have heard how talented he is and this album reflects that perfectly. His lyrics are deep and impactful. The beats and songs are mixed so seamlessly. Each song was unique yet fit so well together as an album. The only one I wasn't a fan of was Devil in a New Dress (tracks didn't line up as well and 'background' vocals to me were too prominent). Wish he could get some mental health help so his music could be the complete focus of his legacy.

Wow! I've never listened to Kanye before and I don't really know that much about him but apparently he's "A Monster". I'm "So Appalled" at his incredibly innovative music. My only criticism is that it seems highly autobiographically which makes it a bit unreleatable for me and the songs didn't especially grab me enough to push it up to a 4. But I can see why people like him or used to like him or whatever.

This was a tough one. I REALLY liked this album back when it came out. Listened to it a lot. Hearing it today, it’s hard to separate the art from the artist because I really can’t stand him as a person and have made it a point NOT to listen to him anymore. So it was hard to get through from that aspect. But my feelings towards him aside, there are songs on this I still like (there’s something still moving to me about All of the Lights and Runaway in particular). It felt like his peak. Even though he sucks, this album doesn’t and I’m gonna strike a balance and just give it a 3. This one really fucked with me. 😭

I still don’t get how this ranks higher, hell, even no. 1 in Kanye’s discography by many people. This is like his 6th best for me, some songs are just clearly better than others and the lows are so low. Still a Decent 8

My first time listening to this album focused. I must say, this album ain't as bad as I thought it out to be. The creative lyrics along with great instrumentals keep the listener engaged throughout the entire thing. 8/10

This one takes me back to freshman year of high school. One of the best albums of the 2010s and Kanye's most cohesive work. This album is packed with so many top producers, great features and classic tracks. It sucks Kanye went crazy.

Musically this is fine, pretty creative at times and not hard on the ears at all. But I find Kanye's voice really annoying. I find I get more out of it if I ignore the lyrics, which I find to be disjointed and dumb. From everything I've heard about Kanye over the years as a talent, I was expecting more. The accompaniment behind many of the songs was fairly interesting, but……it’s still rap. Which means too much profanity, too many “niggers” and too much the same. Plus, with all of the “guests,” I don’t know which voice was Kanye’s. Doesn’t matter though, it’s all crap, so I don’t really care.

Definitely in peak Kanye era. Some of the songs have been played to death but for good reason. Even the lesser songs are still pretty unique. Rating: 4.8

Bis dato möchte ich aber festhalten, dass er rein musikalisch ein absolutes Genie war. Ich kann mich auch noch gut an die Veröffentlichung erinnern. Ich fand das Album ab Tag 1 recht nice, an Gratulation, 808s & Heartbreak & Late Registration kommt es donnoch nicht ran. An Watch the Throne sowieso nicht. Beim Hören fällt mir trotzdem nochmal auf, was für Banger auf der Platte sind. Ich gebe einfach mal eine 4,5 und runde das ganze mal auf!

- Daaamn, ist das Album gut... - Ich fürchte man kann nicht über My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sprechen, ohne kurz das Thema Kanye anzureißen, also kurzer Exkurs: - Seitdem Kanye komplett freigedreht ist vor einigen Jahren habe ich ihn kaum noch verfolgt. Life of Pablo war 2016 das letzte Album, was ich bewusst häufig gehört habe. Das müsste um den Dreh gewesen sein, als er seine Medikation abgesetzt und so richtig die Kontrolle verloren hat. Ich kann Kunst und Künstler immer sehr gut trennen und wenn ich ein Album / Film o.Ä. gut finde, dann ändert sich das i.d.R. auch nicht so schnell. Ich kann auch z.B. problemlos Black Metal konsumieren und gleichzeitig die Leute, die dahinter stehen problematisieren oder kacke finden. Im Fall von Kanye ist es so: Der Mann war seit Graduation (was ich mir damals für 19,99€ bei Mediamarkt gekauft habe) neben Eminem mein absoluter Lieblingsrapper. Ich fand ihn nie sympathisch. Ich fand ihn auch als Rapper technisch nie außergewöhnlich stark, aber unheimlich flowy und auf seinen Beats 100% perfekt passend. Und das was ihn für mich so besonders macht, sind die die unfassbar guten Songs als Gesamtwerk. Extrem geile Beats, geil arrangiert, dramaturgisch toll und übertrieben gut ausproduziert. Das hat mir wirklich viel gegeben. Kanye hatte etwa 10 krasse Jahre, in denen jedes Album ein heftiger Banger war. Danach ist er einfach total abgeschmiert und ich empfinde den Dude einfach nur noch als eine armseelige, traurige Gestalt. Deshalb hab ich mich auch nicht mehr für seine Musik interessiert. Glaube aber auch, dass mir seine aktuelle Musik inzwischen abgesehen von der Privatperson Kanye West nicht mehr zusagt. That being said, kann ich aber immer noch auf seine starken Jahre zurückblicken und mich an der Musik erfreuen. - So auch bei My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Ich hatte mehrfach fucking Gänsehaut. Habe dieses Album damals so oft gepumpt. - Ich mag so ziemlich jeden Track - "All Of The Lights" ist mein Motivational Hip-Hop Track No.1 und findet sich in etlichen meiner Listen! - "Monster" ist nicht viel weniger motivierend und ein krankes Feature Linup mit Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj und... fucking BON IVER?!?!? - Ich bin mir bis heute nicht sicher, ob mir Twisted Fantasy oder Graduation besser als Album gefällt. Tendiere in letzter Zeit, vielleicht auch, weil es meiner Meinung nach die erwachsenere Platte ist, zu My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. - Auch wenn das Werk als absolutes Meisterwerk und Meilenstein gehandelt wird, springe ich nicht ganz so sehr auf diesen Grad der Verehrung auf. Ich finde der Typ hat coole Hits und vor allem zwischen 2008 und 2013 einflussreiche Kreativarbeit geleistet. I wanted to give this album more. I feel a 2.5 is more appropriate. Only a few songs I liked. It felt drawn out for me. I did laugh when Chris Rock lids his thing. Yeh has some clever rhymes but all in all the album didn’t do it for me

I'm not a fan of rap, but this is music with lyrics floating over it. Sonically, it's pretty nice. I can't really pay attention to the lyrics, which I know is the "best" part. My character flaw I guess. The misogynistic nonsense is there, however, so I can't really give it a great rating. Men stuck in adolescence don't do anything for me regardless of the genre.

I found myself dancing to a few songs with nice beats, but overall I really didn't like this one. Very strange and juvenile lyrics. A lot of just annoying music production stuff with sound effects and samples. Kanye isn't for me.

The feeling I get from this album is that Kanye had quite a few ideas that he really liked and are objectively good, and then sort of filled in the rest with random stuff that would “suffice”. This is true for lyrics: some lines really had me thinking, while others felt like an 15-year old white boy had written them. For beats as well: Every song had a good beat, but most of the time I didn’t feel like it went anywhere beyond an initial build. And also for collaborations: it seems like he wrote down a list of people he wanted to be on the album and then just threw them together randomly. Even with all this criticism, I still pretty much liked all the songs. Favorites were Runaway and Blame Game (though the last part was weird and cringe). Also, lots of random product placement. Wonder if he got paid for that.

One of the biggest memories I have with this album is my freshman roommate Ravi playing the trombone part of “All of the Lights” in our dorm room and him thinking it was the coolest thing. Now despite how lame that story is, Ravi did surprisingly have a vast knowledge and appreciation for Kanye and we listened to this album so many times. I mean the bangers are all there. The production value is insane. Each song has so many different elements (choir, auto tune, orchestra, variety of instrumentation, synth, samples, etc.) I also forgot how long each song was. Like each song seems to be around 5 minutes but doesn’t necessarily seem to drag or lose my interest by the end of it. “Lost in the world”was one of my favorite songs at this time that I listened to on repeat. The first 5 star album of the list for me. Strong from the Nicki Minaj fairytale intro until the end of See Me Now. This is not my favorite Kanye, but it is probably the best Kanye. Between his rapping and production, this is his peak (alongside WTT). While his first few albums are very positive and he continues improving throughout them, his mom died before 808s (which directly preceded this album). That showed a big change in the hopefulness that came from his first few albums. 808s was his emo rap response to his mom passing away. This album is one step further where he’s on the edge between greatness and insanity. After this album, Kanye’s narcissism takes over and his albums reflect his deteriorating mental state (if you want to be kind to him) or his self-idolatry and obsession with controversy/maintaining relevancy. Now for the album itself - great production, good features, Kanye-tier rapping (which I wouldn’t consider to be technically good on its own, but very relatable and with all time punchlines) every song (except arguably 1 or 2) are great songs on their own. While Kanye isn’t as strong a rapper, (which admittedly is why I didn’t like him as much when I was at the height of my rap music listening in high school) he is undeniably entertaining and quotable. The album is relentless in giving you banger after banger. From All of the Lights (perhaps his best song of all time) to the radio hits packed with stars (Monster and So Appalled) to ballads like Blame Game. I came into the album thinking it was going to be a 4, but there simply aren’t that many rap albums that can compare across the board all the way through. I hate the cliche of me making a rap album my first 5 star, but I don’t mind the irony in Kanye dethroning T Swift for best album thus far.

Just gonna get it out of the way, it’s a five. One of the best examples of old Kanye being the best Kanye. Yeah, he’s hella problematic as a person, but this is a separate the art from the artist situation. I have so many memories attached to this album as a whole and to individual tracks. I bought this one the week it came out, which just happened to be my first Black Friday weekend at Target, and then bumped it on the way to work that whole Christmas season. And then of course all of the memories of hearing these songs with friends while being a teenage degenerate. This album has the radio hits, it’s got the deep cuts, the 2000s era Kanye production, and best of all it’s a fun one to go back to after a few years. Very glad it came up on the list, now I hope College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation are here as well.

I don't really have much history with Kanye. I didn't listen to him when this album came out, and I only know his radio hits. That being said, I think this album has seeped into my subconscious from my friends playing it so much. I knew way more songs on here than I thought I did, and the ones I didn't know were still great. You can see how someone can compare themselves to Jesus when they put out music as good as this. Also, only Kanye West could be someone who features Kanye West on a Kanye West song (So Appalled).

Fuck. I deleted my first review. Here is a simpler and more condenced version... I really enjoyed the use of vocals as an instrument that is throughout this record. The samples are pretty good. The beats are great for the most part. There are exceptions of course. A lot of the repetition used throuought gets tedious and borderline intolerable. Nicki Minaj should stop. I don't see how people enjoy her? Her flow, and especially her delivery is whack. Runaway: what more could I say, that hasn't been said? Well... It's over hyped and over rated. It's not bad. But it's not a masterpiece. Some cool effects, and samples. This song sounds like it could've been on Ye's last album 808s and Heartbreaks. The meaning behind the song is great. Autobiographical in nature. But that aside, it's just ok. Not sure why people get as excited about it though. Perhaps it's that intro. Hearing King Crimson in Power was always odd for me. I had to get over my initial judgment of it. Underneath everything, it is a great song. Hell Of A Life: "Pussy and Religion is all I need." Well, that's an interesting line. This is the type of hip hop trope I can't get. Bragging about getting pussy is such an immature and juvenile approach. Music is Great in this song. I think the repetition in this album hinders the album.. A lot of poorly written choruses being repeated really makes these songs go from head bopping, to eye rolling. Lyrics are very hit and miss. That isn't just Ye. I do find that I hip hop it is very common to have shitty lyrics. Maybe the words aren't the point? Maybe it's the delivery and flow? Since I enjoy listening to what is being said, this is a focal point for me. Jay Z was shockingly very hit and miss. Great in So Appaled, but God awful in Monster. I wonder if Minaj just overly ruined that song for me... Maybe. Well, actually Jay Z's part just wasn't good. I didn't know Ye and Bon Iver collaborated together. Very interesting. It surprised me that it actually worked! It felt organic. Thought this was going to get a high score. I didn't think a 5. But due to its high acclaim and praise, I thought at least a 4 for me. I think the best part of this album was the production value. To me, that's a 5/5. But there is a lot of bullshit that I can't not judge. I have to judge the body of work, not just parts of it. To me... I give this a strong 3/5

Saw Kanye and cringed. Personal feelings aside, this was a really good album. I hate hearing his voice but there were several kick ass tunes and some great grooves and beats. When you find yourself grooving in your seat, some times you have to admit your hearing some pretty good music. There were a number of tunes I really enjoyed starting with Dark Fantasy. Power, All of the Lights, Monster, Devil In A New Dress and Runaway were all songs the stood out for me. I really struggled here due to my dislike of a POS person but shit, I listened to this album 4-5 times trying to find a reason to tear it apart. I can't. The Chris Rock skit ran a little too long that made it go from a little funny to total cringe, but that's all about I got. What can I say, other than I really enjoyed my listens. It's tough for me to admit, but this is a solid album, with some great tunes, great supporting artist and great grooves. Still ain't giving this a-hole a 4, but it probably deserves higher than what I'm scoring. 3.5

I knew this is often regarded as one of Kanye's best albums but I've always been somewhat hot or cold with ye (public persona notwithstanding). Holy shit what an album. I can absolutely see why this album is as highly regarded as it is. The beats, the samples, the lyrics even, all are incredible. I can hear influences other artists got from this album. I mean, even Nobody by Avenged Sevenfold uses an almost identical arpeggio as Hell of a Life. M Shadows has been very outspoken about ye's influence on LIBAD and now that I'm hearing more by him I can tell. Too bad he's a nazi bitch. 5 for music, 4 because of aforementioned nazi bitchness.

4 As someone who hates Kanye just as much as the next rational individual, I feel like I’ve been subconsciously avoiding this album for some time now due to fear of enjoying it, and, well, I did. I totally see why this album was acclaimed when it came out - yes, Kanye’s rapping is great, but the production here is unreal. I know this is classified as a hip hop album, but it really seems to transcend the genre to become its own elevated thing. There’s a lot going on in the mix, but it never feels overcrowded or overblown, and there are splashes of just about everything you could want in an album going on at some point - R&B/soul here, classic rock there, some strings mixed in for good measure, and there’s even a reference to his appearance on South Park. Each and every song feels like its own totally unique thing while still managing to flow perfectly into the next, resulting in what feels like a ride from start to finish. Admittedly, I do think there’s just a bit of a slump in the middle with the stretch of Monster to Devil in a New Dress, despite featuring quite possibly the best rap verse of Nicki Minaj’s career (though that’s a low bar). However, things pick right back up with the best this album has to offer in Runaway - it’s a beautiful, powerful track that feels nowhere near as long as its 9-minute runtime would suggest and, as much as I hate to say it, with its conclusion, I now have a favorite Kanye song. And it really doesn’t slow down from there between the rocking, Iron Man-interpolating Hell of a Life, impassioned, Chris Rock-monologuing Blame Game, and finally, danceable, Gil Scott-Heron-inspired Lost in the World, which provides a great sense of conclusion to the album (especially with the segue into Who Will Survive in America). So, yeah, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would or wanted to. That being the case, it presents a bit of a struggle for me knowing that it came from Kanye West, known racist, Holocaust-denier, and general psycho. And even if you’re someone who believes in/is able to separate art from the artist, the thing about this album is that Kanye doesn’t hold back from putting his insufferable personality on full display in a lot of the lyrics here. It’s insightful in some ways but just as disgusting in others, and in a lot of ways, I feel like it holds me back from truly appreciating the album at max capacity, putting an asterisk next to every moment of enjoyment. At the end of the day, I do think acknowledgement is owed to this album’s fantastic production and overall place in the musical world. You can be a monster and a talented producer, two things can be true - look at Phil Spector. I don’t support or endorse Kanye in any way, but as a music fan, I have to say this is a good album. So, I say give it a listen if you like it, but idk, maybe pirate it or something so you’re not giving this dude more money.

I've heard this recently enough to feel comfortable providing my thoughts without giving this gigantic asshole any more streams: like probably many other white people my age, Kanye was a big entry point for me into rap, and was essentially the only hip hop i listened to for a good while (very embarrassed to have been a "everything but rap and country" kid in middle school). now, I've exposed myself to much more rap & hip hop and i just find my tastes have changed. the actual quality of production is pretty unimpeachable but the style of it just does nothing for me. a lot of it is weirdly weightless and the sounds just don't wow me the way they did back in 2010. and of course many of the actual lyrics are eye rolling how much of this is just a subconscious response to what Kanye has become? probably a lot, i dunno. i try to listen unbiased but there's just an inescapable level of slime over all of it now. i want to say my diminished view is honestly come by, but truly i can't say how much my opinion of the man is causing me to be less generous than i otherwise would be. but, hey, I'm not a professional critic, i can afford to be biased

Kun je de muziek los zien van de foute maker? Erg lastig in dit geval. Allerlei euhm, expliciet taalgebruik doet de rest. Ik vind niet dat ik hier verder kennis van hoef te nemen.

Af en toe wat lui klinkende rap. In plaats van opnieuw op te nemen, wordt het met allerlei foefjes opgeleukt. De stem wordt vervormd, er komt volle muziek onder en, zijn favoriete oplossing, hij laat een ander het oplossen. Het zorgt voor een album dat prima wegluistert op de achtergrond. Maar als je echt gaat luisteren, is het niet bijzonder sterk. Dat levert 2,5 ster en 1 ster voor het selectiecomité van deze lijst.

De foute fantasie van een flapdrol, wat een feest. Wat me gelijk opvalt is dat de eerste nummers hele lange herhalingen hebben van deuntjes. Weinig afwisseling van het riffje of de akkoorden. Totdat het bijna je strot uitkomt. Minimaal een couplet en een refrein minder had wel gemogen. En het geldt eigenlijk wel voor meerdere nummers, het is soms allemaal net te lang. Waar hij over rapt, dat boeit me weinig en het is denk ik ook beter om het niet te weten, maar ik vind zijn flow altijd wel fijn. Voor de zangpartijen worden allerhande beroemde artiesten ingevlogen. Of beroemde samples gebruikt, zoals 21st century schizoid man, wat natuurlijk van King Crimson is. De man kent wel zijn klassieken. De productie is uitermate gelikt, de beats zijn goed. Het is absoluut wel van een bepaalde kwaliteit. Het is niet helemaal mijn favoriete muziek, maar het bombastische en moddervet geproduceerde geluid zorgt toch wel voor een prima luisterervaring. Ik zou het dan ook kunnen waarderen op 3,5 ster en aangezien ik graag naar boven afrond, komen we zowaar op 4 sterren uit voor deze geflipte fantast.

The soul music of the slaves that the youth is missin'" - Gorgeous Kanye will forever be one of the best producers/samplers in modern hip hop with some of the wildest lyrics ever penned. It's his comical lyricism and self-absorbed bravado that you can never take serious that throws him off being the G.O.A.T. The emotional tenderness of Runaway along with its abrasive 3 minute autotune solo over dramatic strings seals the top spot for me but there are definitely several more solid tracks with gorgeous symphonics, next level sampling, killer beats and a pleasant amount of heavily distorted guitar recurring throughout.

Safe to say, there's a lot going on. This is basically radio-pop from the post-genre hip hop hegemony era. But it's also a concept album that asks an important question: what if an extremely famous guy was also extremely horny? The defining feature here is the maximalist production. There's some incredibly lush gospel stuff, some funny appropriations of black sabbath and king crimson, some dumb skits, some annoying choruses, some tiresome mediations on fame and celebrity (yawn), some attention grabbing verses, some spaced out deep beats, a lot of propulsive forward energy, and oh shit, is that RZA?! Nicki?! Raekwon!? Kanye is a tedious bore and a mid rapper, but also a masterful producer, beat-maker, hook-writer and creator of interesting audio-collages.

Honestly gorgeous

Had to really hold my nose for this one. Ive never actively listened to a single kanye project...and at this point I kind of enjoy having that rare persepective. But Im not a zealot about it so I immediately pressed play. Ill start with my praise. It reaaally feels like 2010. So much so that it was quite nostalgic. Now remember Ive not heard more than half of this album. The only song coukd pick out of a lineup was Monster, which I am only aware of due to the 'legendary' Minaj portion. So it is rather impressive to be thoroughly transported to a time 14 years ago by songs and a sound/style you only absorbed through cultural osmosis. I kinda enjoyed So Apalled. It was my favorite track overall. Best features besides Monster , and I feel it delivered the most on the albums concept, without being annoying or obvious. No the annoying and obvious was reserved for basically every other marquee track on here, with the exception of the opener, which is catchy, but practically bubblegum, which as we all know loses its flavor quickly, and the final two closing songs which roll into eachother nicely and might be worth a revisit. The lowest point for me was Runaway, which is such a cliched sentiment in music(of all genres actually), along with the concept 'im so f'd gurl, no u dont understand, im a literal Monster' that I cant buy into the themes. Its just sooo overwrought and self congradulatory for the sake of spectacle. I will not be "toasting the scumbags". Im sorry I just wont. Like...we all can look back and see how this album reads in 2024. Its like Kanye devoting all his power toward letting himself off the hook for anything, and he had so much cultural sway not only did the media, core music culture, and corporate brands COMPLETELY FALL IN LINE, they all had to eat their words and show their asses when he went FULL NAZI MAGA DORK, and its like oops haha nvm not MY Kanye. Lastly I'll say that Chris Rock skit was unlistenable, and maybe he deserved THE SLAP, now that I was forced to hear it. Bring on the next one, I know theres gonna be more Yeezy in this list.

Production value is off the charts. Lyrical subject matter is kind of boring and repetitive. basically "I am great and I get a lot of woman to sleep with me" said in a few different ways. musically its hip hop so nothing to write home about. it was very difficuilt to remove the art from the artist in this case.Kanye is a twat that needs to be drawn and quatered publiccally along wiht the rest of the wealthy 1% of the world.

I was prepared to totally dislike this album because of Kanye, he seems so full of himself. However it turned out a mixed back, great sound and some cool tracks but others just don't work for me. I may invest more time and another listen.

The weak applause at the end of the album just about sums up my feelings, which is a lot more than I was expecting. Most of the samples are good and there's quite a lot of good singing. Of course there's also Kanye and guests rapping, which was really not for me and damn, I was not prepared for Kanye singing. I guess I get why he chooses to rap.

Putting aside that Kanye being a pos human with zero moral compass, this album and music are really really good. I am rating the music, not the person. The person is a zero.

On a few tracks I felt I knew what he was up to, beyond offending anyone looking to be offended, but no - for me, no.

One of my favorite albums of all-time. Easy 5-star. It's a shame what's happened to Kanye in the years since, but this holds up incredible well. There are some dated / stupid lyrics here or there, but as a start to finish album, there are few works that top this. It's a true feat. A gift to the world

Kanye seems like a real fun guy to hang around with. Misogyny, personal grievance, and a complete lack of levity. I dislike this album for the same reason I dislike The Downward Spiral by NIN: it's all just too self-involved. Me, me, me.

Anthemic hip hop. Without speaking on Kanye as a person, his musical output for many years was unrivaled compared to most of his contemporaries. MBDTF followed 808s in a big pivot of style. Some of his greatest songs can be found on MBDTF. Grandiose production value, every song sounds really good, amazing mix. Beats are all killer, lyrics are top tier for the most part. It kind of drags in the middle with two songs back to back bloated with features, but then picks back up quickly afterwards. Quite a long album overall but it never feels like it's dragging since the energy is always there. For sure a classic. Don't listen to Kanye much anymore but I'll still probably revisit.

The hard part with the argument you should separate the art from the artist is sometimes the art is about the artist, and in this case hoo boy is it really about the artist. It seems quaint now to think there was a time when Kanye’s biggest sin was disrupting the MTV Video Award to say Beyoncé had a better music video than Taylor Swift (and nobody remembers he did it to Justice for “We Are Your Friends” too! smh), but he was humiliated so badly by the public, the president, and Lady Gaga that he had to decamp to Hawaii to build up an insane mythos with an insane roster of collaborators about this album that’s kind of…well, you know. It’s a maximalist epic of assholery that somehow follows a hero’s journey from Chicago to getting lost in the rest of the world, an album about Kanye’s own narcissism that somehow ends with him *not* getting the last word. It is, as many others will hyperbolically but correctly attest to, Kanye’s best work as a producer and curator, with the grandiose arrangements and huge drums and mental breakdown-induced vocal panning being matched only by how huge the guest list is. (Do you remember that La Roux sings harmony on “All of the Lights”? Now you do!) Lyrically, some of the jokes and references are tired, but there’s still great details throughout: the devil in the Chrysler LeBaron, different exotic fishes, you love me for me; could you be more phony? In the end, Kanye (mostly) takes responsibility for his faults and comes close to something of an epiphany, which makes everything that came afterwards of course more tragic and baffling and angering. Of course, this album didn’t end up being Kanye’s third act, and every move since has been in one way or another a hard right turn. I haven’t really enjoyed Kanye’s music since The Life of Pablo, and I absolutely haven’t enjoyed watching him turn into an avatar of bigotry. But, for better or worse, he made this album I still love about kicking and screaming against forgiveness, and still getting it anyway.

Tricky one. Generally not a a big fan of Kanye West's music. And let's not get in to what a shitty person he seems to be, though if that was taken into account I'm sure there are other artists on this list that should be subject to the same scrutiny as well. So I will disregard that part! Commercially it seems to be quite successful, and it is a bit annoying that I feel that affect how I perceive it, but it does. But if I try to put that aside I think it might end up somewhere in upper middle for me personally. His style seem to land somewhere between hip-hop and pop for me, and you have to appreciate that many of the songs are quite experimental and stands out. They are also quite different from each other, but the album still feels coherent. But I still somehow can't find a song on the album that I quite liked. They were all decent, but even the supposed popular ones were a bit of a shrug to me. And the lyrics weren't that impressive to me. I'll give it a strong 3. Maybe it would grow on me if I put it on me, not sure.

I want to dislike Kanye because he seems like a terrible person (at least now) but man this record is good. From the first Mike Oldfield sample I'm hooked. The samples are great, the guest rappers are also great. So many incredible songs: "Gorgeous", " All of the lights", "Monster" (with one of the best guest verses ever)... I feel like I'm just listing off the whole album. One thing that subtracts from the album is that the songs after "Runway" aren't particularly good. An otherwise 5 star ends skidding to a screeching halt. Still I think this is an Iconic album worthy of this list.

Kanye West's 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' proves that you don't need to be under the influence to create amazing art; Kanye's own mind does all the work. Even if rap's not your thing, the sheer quality and musical skill on this album are impossible to ignore.

The weirdest and worst thing about the Kanye West situation is that there’s a decade’s worth of people who were later like, “Come to think of it, he did talk about Hitler a lot!” He did a whole letterman taping where he talked about Hitler a bunch, to an uneasy crowd. Then they just edited the interview and released it anyway! Good album, a 1 anyway.

Reconciling my feelings on Kanye has been difficult lately considering how much I love his first six albums. I didn’t listen to MBDTF today, but I’ve listened enough over the years to know where I stand. Not my favorite of his, but undeniably a powerhouse album. I still remember feeling really moved by his 2010 VMA performance of Runaway despite only being 13 at the time. Lost In The World, Monster, Gorgeous, Devil In A New Dress, All Of The Lights… so many classics.

Wood be a great rap album if less N & P used

I was doing so well not listening to Kanye ever since his little outburst of naziism but oh well. Sure a lot of the songs on this album drag on for 30 seconds-2 minutes too long and the tone is all over the place but then you hear a trademark electric guitar solo and everything is forgotten. Every song could be 20 minutes long and the production could still carry it to a 5 for me. Gorgeous power and devil in a new dress are probably my favs in an album packed with bangers.

Another one that wasn't new to me. I listened to this quite a bit when it came out- even though hip hop isn't really my thing. Kanye has gone to shit in the past several years, but this was a fun album if you ignore the lyrics. Not my thing.

I used to love this album. I think it’s fair to say I’ve soured on all of West’s music since he outed himself as an anti-semitic douchebag, and I have a hard time enjoying any of his music past or present. I’ve especially soured on the lyrical content and found much to be desired, especially compared to West’s first 2 albums of Yeezus. MBDTF is a masterclass in production, sampling, and collaboration, and it shouldn’t be underestimated how massive this was in 2010. It’s still one of the best rap albums ever made, and certainly one of if not THE best art rap/pop rap/whatever you want to call this genre albums ever made. Pretty much every song is a masterpiece, and it’s a shame that they were made by such a colossal asshole. Whatever happened to the Kanye West who wrote “Balding Donald Trump taking dollars from y’all”?

Not sure how to rate this one. Super annoying, not my genre at all - but also really impressive. Impossible not to see why this has the acclaim it does, and I'm sure if this was my genre it would be an absolute go to. Really stands out against other albums of the same style/period. Update - Monster is a beast. Easy four stars from me.
