2. Hours.
21 minute song to kick things off, yeesh. Also an almost 2 hour album of pretty similar sounding music (to me at least). Sounds like something you hear in the lobby or spa of an upscale hotel. Not really any need to listen to this by choice. 3.5/10 (1.75/5)

It might have been instrumental to a genre, but it’s a genre that I’ve never been able to get into. If the first track was the whole album I think I would’ve been like “not usually my genre but this was good fun” but 2 hours of it is just way too much for me. I did like the voice of the singer and there were parts of it I enjoyed but by the end I was bored. Also it was crazy to me to read the reviews and see that a lot of people don’t seem to know about drum and bass, but I guess that’s just my Britishness showing. It’s a genre of music that seemed inescapable when I was at uni. Fav song: State of Mind Least fav: Saint Angel
i don’t even know what version to listen to as there’s a 2x CD version… a normal CD and Cassette version… then there’s the 2x LP version… they’re all different 🫠 the version on spotify is the 2x CD version and it’s nearly 2 hours long which is just too long for a focused listen, and i am not doing chores for 2 hours! it seems most EDM albums is just really long. there’s been the occasional song that i really like. “sea of tears” is amazing.
A pretentious title, to be sure, but one that is completely accurate. Flyer single “Inner City Life” stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it on the radio in 1994 and on the album it is expanded into a 20 minute prog opus. In the early days of electronic music that would have been Side A of a classic album, but here it is just the first track. There are numerous classics on this one hour and 45 minute epic. The only mis-step is “Adrift” in which we realise how important the “drum” in drum’n’bass is when it’s missing. But that not enough to stop it getting the maximum rating.

Is this an everybody gets a trophy kind of project? Seriously, how is this album on this list. It seems that there was an effort to include every genre, even if that genre generally sucks. This album objectively sucks.

Tapping out early on this one. I left trance music a looooooonnnnnng time ago. In my walkman 2 cd player circa '98 was a trance CD. It was the only one that ever appealed to me and this is no exception. It doesn't move me, make me wanna dance, or relax me, its not engaging. I usually just check out. Some moments of timeless and the entirety of state of mind were worthy of a nod. But the rest of that robotic fast paced bank heist music and is subpar.
Okay for gym music but tedious after awhile and way too much of it in one album.
Two double albums in a row?! Come on… Too long. When I checked in at 20 min, I was sure I was already an hour in. State of Mind 2.5

It, has a few good moments but its not great overall, the songs are too long and could be so much better if they were shorter.

great background music vibes
Qua jungle-albums kun je niet veel beter krijgen, geloof ik. De titeltrack is wel echt een episch stuk, meer dan 20 minuten lang, maar het verveelt nergens.
I fucking love jungle and drum & bass. This is a fire album. I think it is important to remember that this list is a well rounded lists that highlights the crux and peaks of a lot of genres. There are a lot of fake music listeners who can't listen to something outside their comfort zone. Its just jungle & drum and bass. Nothing too fancy or left field of a genre in electronic music. I think what this album does is accent the lostness that drum and bass is supposed to guide you on. I love the long songs on this album. Truly a joy to listen to.
If you’ve ever wondered what two hours of a washing machine having a nervous breakdown sounds like, look no further.
It's not that I don't get the pleasures of sinking into the celerity and flow of the 'bass and drum' sound, it's that the monotony and space-agedness of the enterprise leaves me cold. Stemming from 'jungle,' in reality there isn't much resembling a jungle here, more like a scrambling for the next hit, a hunting for yet another bump. That's something I've experienced and that I've enjoyed, but I gotta be out for that: the impact of such a record is thus too narrowly defined. I know that not all brilliance fits every mood, but I'd like to think that it should accommodate more than one. On top of that, the vocals, provided by Diane Charlemagne and Lorna Harris, are a weak link difficult to overcome: uninteresting, detached. Upswing for influence tho.

This was the toughest listen so far for sure. So so long and a 21 minute long song to start like come on. Even if it was a good beat all the way through it would have been more bearable. But it has minute long sections in songs with no beat and what sounds like a bloody Nokia ringtone. Painful. Some songs could be good to run to or something though I guess. Specific rating- 0.4 Fav song- this is a bad Least fav- adrift

Weird but good
This album might win the award for longest album. In fairness, I probably wasn't in the mood for ...this. I don't think I've ever been so happy to hear the intro to Steven Stills' "Love the One You're With", signifying that I had finished this one. Or maybe Steve was telling me I should've loved Goldie?
According to some opinions, Timeless is a quintessential album in electronic music history, opening doors to many different subgenres. It may be true, but there is one big problem with it - it's not good. Basocally every song had an irritating and a boring beat, that probably might have been outdated back in 90s already. I couldn't feel the atmosphere in this album at all, just anger and boredom. Not so timeless in the end.

I'm only 30 seconds in and I love this.
I didn’t finish the whole two hours but it was enjoyable! I liked the beats, I could see looking more into the discography if I want to get more into drum and bass. The vocals were solid too, I swear I’ve heard this stuff before. It’s not on my regular listening, but if it was it could be five stars.
Seems to be quite a bit of electronica on this list. I don't get the appeal, much of this just seemed like noise. It seemed to keep dragging on and it was a struggle to get as far as I did.
I get it, the point is the rhythm. But damn, it just does not stop. Feels like getting trapped in a loading screen with no exit. Some of the ambient, floaty bits were okay, but the majority? Relentless, looping jungle beats that just pound on like a headache with no cure. It's probably great for coding or deep cleaning your garage. Not when I’m trying to actually (actively) listen. This has the haters comings out if the woodwork. I'm not a D&B fan but you can tell this is an excellent representation of the genere. This passes the purpose test as well, as in this record has one and accomplished it
I've gotten a few albums that are either Jungle adjacent, or actual Jungle albums like this one. So far, I feel like this list is targetting some of the "weaker" projects. Timeless is good for a fan of the genre, but if you aren't a fan of the genre it's too long, and may be a little hard to stomach. Great live though. 3/5 feels too low, but 4/5 feels to high.
Too long, but good otherwise
Born Marigold Clifford Joseph Price MBE, better known as Goldie, is an English music producer, DJ, and thespian, with frequent TV appearances as the Blue Peter dog. Goldie was a Golden Retriever who was a Blue Peter dog, appearing on the show from 1978 to 1986. She was owned by presenter Simon Groom and her name was chosen by Blue Peter viewers. Goldie was known for being a sweet and friendly dog. After finishing her TV role she forged a path in music. When people think of the 1990s, they usually think of important cultural milestones, like Gladiators, or Mr. Blobby’s harrowing rise to power. But tucked away among all that chaos was another event almost as significant: Timeless by Goldie, an album that changed music forever, or at least for about an hour and a half. Timeless is described as a “drum and bass” album. “Drum and bass” is a type of music where the drums go at roughly the speed of sound, while the bass hums away underneath like a very relaxed cow. Goldie, who is not made of gold and probably isn’t even called Goldie in real life, took these ingredients and stirred them together into something that sounds like the future, if the future was mainly made of really fast drums and dolphins crying. The album opens with the track Timeless, which is confusing, because that’s also the name of the album. This makes it difficult to know whether you’re listening to the song, the album, or just the inexorable passage of time. The music swooshes around your ears like you’re trapped inside a washing machine that’s fallen in love with you. Goldie apparently made Timeless as a tribute to breakbeats, inner-city life, and possibly to people who enjoy having a minor existential crisis on a dancefloor at four in the morning. There’s singing from Diane Charlemagne, who has a voice so powerful it could probably knock over a horse from fifty feet away, which is why she mainly stuck to singing and not equestrian sports. One of the standout tracks is Inner City Life, which sounds a bit like sadness trapped in a rave. It’s about living in the city, which is like living in the countryside, except there’s less mud and more chance you’ll be mugged by a fox. Throughout the album, the beats get faster and the bass gets deeper, until eventually it feels like you’re being gently chased by a swarm of bees made entirely of sound. Some tracks last for fifteen minutes, which in dog years is roughly a whole day. By the end of it, you’re not sure if you’ve just been listening to music or if you’ve accidentally been uploaded to the internet. In conclusion, Timeless is a very important album because it proves that music doesn’t have to make sense to be brilliant. Goldie showed that you can take any sounds you like—drums, bass, whales having an argument—and smoosh them together into something people will call “groundbreaking,” mainly because it makes their floors vibrate. If you only listen to one album in 1995 (and can time travel), you should probably listen to Timeless, unless you hate loud noises, feelings, or the concept of time itself. In which case, maybe just stay in bed. The Outhere Brothers, “Don’t Stop (wiggle wiggle)” provides an alternative aural treat, but only fails to make this list as it is a 7” single, rather than the 45” extended drumular bass standard.

Knew going in the runtime would be long, but I ended up stopping at what felt like an hour. I paused it in the middle of Sea Of Tears, saw how many songs were left, and decided I had enough of this repetitive shit. Not my cup of tea. 1 star.
Damn this is a long album. The leadoff and album namesake "Timeless" takes a large chunk of that runtime at just over 21 minutes. This termed "DnB symphony" certainly takes its time and has its moments, but doesn't have nearly the propulsiveness of other DnB we've had on this list (e.g., Underworld). State of Mind is a definite shift of direction, but I enjoy it quite a bit. I appreciate the bass thrumping and demented vocal sample of This is a Bad. Sea of Tears is a personal favorite of mine here. I find the use of the dolphin whistle throughout to be kooky, but wonderful and love the thick basslines. Still Life is scratching a certain itch for me. I like the dustiness of the snares. Between meeting interruptions that album took me through my entire morning. I'd say that I enjoyed it just fine, but there aren't any individual tracks that I long to go back for. This is pretty much definition 3.
Another unique album. I feel like we have gotten a good dose of 90's electronic/techno but not too much in the DnB realm. Interested to have a listen as DnB is making its way back into popularity in the EDM space. State of Mind stood out to me as a soft and pretty track after the previous two harder tracks. Overall this one had its brighter moments and no real lows. It was a tad long, but no real complaints after all was said and done. Was thinking low 4 at a point, but it kinda drifted at the end. Happy to give this one a high 3.
Some of the songs were pretty good and trancy. A lot of the songs though were way too drum and bass repetitive beats for my liking. Funny that in my most recent album review I mentioned not liking drum and bass and now this album came up, they were listening. Not a likeable genre at all in my opinion
This is a long boi! This was solid d&b but it was entirely too long. No need for this. On drugs it may have kept me attentive for the length but no way on a Monday. Just insanely repetitive for me.

5/10 I've got a soft spot for Goldie because of my step-dad's love for him, but this is music that needs to be listened to in the right setting to be fully enjoyed. Even then, a song like 'Timeless', which could genuinely be a great song, is undone by the ridiculous length. I'm not sure even Goldie fans are going back and listening to this whole record - I know my step-dad isn't. Obviously a groundbreaking album for DnB/Jungle, and in places it really has stood the test of time, but in others it hasn't aged nearly so gracefully. Not an easy album to get through all in all. I listened to the cd/casette version because the other version is hella long. I'm not a connaiseur of drum 'n bass but I think this less frenetic sound is the origin of the genre(?). I kinda liked it but even the shorter version of this album is an hour which makes it a long sitdown for something not exactly in your comfortzone

It finally happened I committed to myself when I started this project that I would listen to every album in its entirety, no matter how much I hated it. This album is making me break my promise. I will not listen to 2 hours of a drum machine. I made it halfway through the 6th track and I just fucking cant go on anymore. This is fucking awful

Repetitive
I think it’s great. It’s a bit dated, but there’s a lot of nostalgia in this for me. I went through a club kid phase in the mid 90s, and I listened to a lot of Goldie. I grew up a bit sheltered, so finding black artists in genres other than hip hop and r&b was always a real thrill for me at the time. Musically, I still think the album is so creative and interesting. I’m always a fan of melding genres, and this album does that so well. It’s electronica, it’s dance music, but it’s softer, somehow, more languid. Its Drum & Bass, but dreamy. Again, I do think it’s slightly dated, but that may be because I can’t help but think of myself listening to it 30 years ago. Conversely, it’s so unique that it almost has a timeless quality to it that would allow anyone to throw it on for mood music and get the same atmospheric vibe as the first day it was released. I’m giving it a half star nostalgia bump.

Sure, if you don’t like drum & bass, jungle, or even electronic music in general, 2 hours of a pretty stylistically limited genre is going to feel like a slog. Fucking duh. Your ears are already closed off from the opening track’s 21-minute runtime, which is honestly a great filter to determine if you’re going to enjoy Timeless or not. And if you still stick with it to the end after hating that, you’re just going to act like it “all sounded the same,” because you’re ears aren’t tuned into the ✨point✨ of this subgenre. But, if you DO like drum & bass, jungle, or even electronic music in general, you’re probably going to enjoy Timeless. Despite the limitations of the subgenre– and trust me, I do think it’s a fairly limited style compared to it’s cousin genres – Goldie is able to do a lot of sonic exploration within this sound palette. If you’re not a nerd who listens to a lot of DJ sets or Bandcamp remixes, it might not be obvious, but you can see it in the jazz elements of “Sea of Tears,” the horns on “Adrift,” and just the general ambient textures throughout this record that counterbalance the hard breakbeats. I am unfortunately a nerd, *and* I recently decided to learn how to DJ myself, so not only did I enjoy Timeless on a base level as a fan of electronic music, but I also was fascinated by it from a historical context. Literally, this is a starting point. Maybe it didn’t birth the subgenre(s), but it perfected a lot of jungle, ambient house, and DnB, and I can personally hear a ton of “real” dubstep and glitch on here, too. It made these sounds artful, and Goldie is really exploratory with the limitations. I also think that if you can get into an abstract mindset, the ✨storytelling✨ of moving from the inner city outwards and back again does fit the sonic progression of this record. Timeless is important and influential, but it’s also well done, and a fun listen that I personally never felt bored with, because if you’re a fan of these genres, listening to a 2-hour set isn’t really a crazy heavy lift. That said, I do think Timeless is unfortunately not fully timeless. My biggest gripe here is the synth pads, which feel very dated, screaming, “Circa 1993-1995!” They’re just very compressed in a way where I can almost hear their bit rates, if that makes sense. I think I have a problem with dated digital instrumentation in general, but it’s particularly annoying because the drums, while very, very, very MPC-ish in the way they groove and glitch, sound fucking fantastic. I also think, like many great club records, there’s more value to Timeless when it’s broken down into pieces. Again, as a whole experience, I think it’s very successful even today, but the energy it takes to press “Play” on a 2 hour record and not stop can be a bit of a lift. Whereas if you handed me “A Sense of Rage,” “Angel,” or “Saint Angel” on their own, I’d be so much more likely to listen to those tracks independently. Hell, even “Inner City Life/Timeless” is less daunting when digested in isolation. Again, the full album play-through wasn’t a boring or even difficult experience for me, but it is a weighty one. Bit by bit, though, it’s consistently great. The only tracks I really still found myself disliking even on their own were “Still Life,” because the synths sound the most dated here, and “Adrift,” which is doing a free jazz/ambient electronic thing that I just find silly and unsuccessful, even if I understand the point intellectually (i.e. the music sounds like it’s literally lost at sea). I think the fact that I still overall really loved Timeless, appreciated getting the chance to hear it for the first time, and would still defend its spot on this list tells me how different I am from the general user of this generator, but that’s also totally fine by me. Of all the 90’s electronic albums here, this is maybe the toughest to find the magic in, but I think most fans of DnB will find the magic. But also, as I’ve said before, I just enjoy music that would play during the character select screen on a PS2 game, and that is very much the vibe here.

The jazzier and atmospheric stuff on this album is really good, but the hectic breakbeat rythm parts just make me nervous. Ambitious and experimental debut record that created whole new genre, but not quite my cup of tea.

Felt like pure background music — and far too long.
For the most part I know Goldie from the stuff he did with Metalheadz, but not really his personal stuff. I mean Photek and Dillinja ring a bell, but I don't really remember names... Platinum Breakz compilations maybe? Anyway, back then I was more into jungle that drum 'n bass, also psychedelic downtempo stuff like Children Of The Bong and trip hop like Tricky. This sound nice tho, haven't listened to anything like this in years.

im not studied up on the complete history of dnb but for 1995 this seems like a cool collection of tracks feels cool, feels fun, doesnt feel too trapped in the past to appreciate
Actually enjoyed this much more than I expected. It was great as background music for working, and I often found myself vibing to the very deep bass and jungle drums. I only knew the radio edit of Inner City Life going into this, but there are a couple of good songs on it. It's obscenely long though, and quite repetitive in places. Also a bit dated, so the album title is unfortunate!

It did not age well
5.5/10. Again, I have to give credit to pioneers because they are responsible for a lot of the music I love today. I have to say this one did feel like a bit more of a journey and there were certainly a lot of nice moments in it where I genuinely felt quite transported. That being said it is very long and the moments were probably too few and far between to keep me captivated. Probably also suffered from me just listening to it in the wrong context, I feel like all these jungle ones should be taken with a small pinch of salt!
Really leaned into the rapid electronic drum beats. So repetitive though. Not for me at all. State of mind was pretty good. Overall, really not my taste at all. The songs were so long too. If you've heard one song on this album, you've basically heard the whole album.

Before I was even halfway through this very long self-indulgent project, I knew how I was going to rate this. The first track felt very trance-like and after a while it had me wondering if it would be like this the whole way through. I'm not really a fan of electronic, bass/drums driven music to start and for the most part I can tolerate it, but "Timeless" felt endless, as this is a crazy commitment of time for something so ambient and a background soundtrack. The female vocals gave it substance and kept it listenable and gets the stars for an otherwise non-essential listen.
It's all competent and fine though it does leave me a bit cold. So getting g through 2 hours of this is a bit much TBH
I'm sure this was groundbreaking and awe inspiring in 92 but I can't listen to 2 hours of this musical clip art. Sounds like a 2003 college music art project, some decent bits across some of the tracks but basically reminds of "the sound" from friends. Very low 3.
No song gets to be 21 minutes without having earned it. Which means there can be only one 21 minute song and that's The Odyssey by Symphony X, obviously. "This is a bad", indeed. Understatement much.

Great sountrack for trail running.
I found the beats to be jarring and dissonant, but I enjoyed the dreamy vocals and spacey synthesizers, as well as the more soulful, jazzy stuff. There is music on this album. Take note, Fatboy. 3

Oh yeah, Goldie. I saw them open for Jane's Addiction in 1997 and was bored out of my mind after about 5 minutes. And here's an album that's almost 2 hours long. Greeeeaaaat. I tried. I did. I thought I was on the second song, checked in on it, and discovered I was only halfway through the first one, which still had about 10 minutes to go. Couldn't make myself go any further. This should be called Endless, because that's how it feels.
D&B legend, great album
I’m a bit torn here. I love Drum and Bass. It’s my favorite type of dance music by far. I don’t really like Goldie and his brand of softer DnB. I also don’t really like DnB as “listening” music because it gets repetitive and boring very fast. So what it should be? I’ll give it three stars, but if you want to get a taste of DnB please attend a party or a rave rather than trying to listen to this boring drivel.

Not really a fan of Drum and Bass. I find it too different from actually bass and actual drums - those super fast rhythms are jarring and feel so artificial. This is just OK - there is some good stuff here, mostly the vocals.

This is a perfect example of something that I’m sure in the right context/setting is great but that context is not at my desk while I’m playing pokemon. Very cool to see where drum and bass originated but thank god artists have been able to make it significantly more interesting as time has gone on. State of mind was great, the sensual vip mix is a crazy track name but also pretty good. One positive is the album does a great job dropping in motifs throughout the mix and call backs to 45 droning minutes ago. Not my thing but a good history lesson.
This album definitely felt timeless. Didn’t see an end in sight. Although I do like Drum and Bass, I can only take it in small doses. I think this would probably be considered a “Musicians album” rather than an album that everyone needs to listen to. I think this much drum and bass only appeals to a small niche of the music community and to people who pretend to like it. I do appreciate the production of the drums, but that’s about it. I think I picked up some parts of the album that have been sampled in more recent tracks. I don’t think that this album should be considered an album that everyone needs to listen to. You need to be on an uppers for this album.

So there's a tendency in electronic music to praise early three hour long albums that invented the genre as genius instead of what they are, which is jingling keys for people doing meth. Goddamn this album is interminable, listening to it is like getting pranked by a friend who sets a song you're listening to on loop without telling you. And that's kinda it. I will give it some props for being very dynamic. The songs flow and change and evolve constantly. I thought that would be enough but it wasn't. It's better than most in this genre but it's still not enough for me
I really liked the album. First song was a bit long but overall the vibe of the album was great. I am a huge fan of liquid dnb so it was cool to see that music like this has been around since 1995. Would listen to it again.

Diane Charlemagne is everything on the "Inner City Life" part of the "Timeless" suite that is the 21 minute opening track of the Goldie album, also entitled "Timeless." Beloved in 1995 by the UK music periodicals and other trend-starved critical outlets gazing across the pond (Village Voice, Spin, Alternative Press), but most Americans are only familiar with Goldie because of his brief romance with Icelandic superstar Björk. Drum and Bass emerged from the UK Jungle scene, which translates as a variation on Techno, Dance Music and Electronica the finer points can be endlessly discussed by afficionados of the genre. I appreciate the propulsive lightness of "Saint Angel" "State of Mind" is harp, piano, synth strings and soulful vocals. Lovely, feathery, stuttering, ethereal....but ultimately background music that overstays its welcome.

Timeless had quite the varied vibe; it could be trippy or ambient. It wasn't like most electronic music of the time because of its variance and ambiance. *But*. *However*. *Regardless*. This album was incredibly repetitive. Why were the songs so long? Why were the lyrics inconsequential? Why did they include lyrics at all? Why was this album so long when the songs kept repeating the same 3 beats over and over?! This album could have gotten a generous 3 if it had been shortened dramatically, but it sure wasn't. I guess it was groundbreaking for the electronic scene, but I find I don't care.
This album was an absolute slog. It was very ambient and very repetitive and not at all engaging. And DEFINITELY way too long. It quickly drifted into background noise for me. I just got no pleasure from this album, unfortunately. It's been a while since I've dished out a 1, but this album definitely earned it.

Świetny album. Trzydzieści lat na karku, a brzmi naprawdę świeżo. W wielu miejscach czuję, jak bardzo inspirujący musiał być dla wielu twórców. Słyszę jakieś znajome elementy, które wiem, że gdzieś już słyszałem, a był to album, który jako jeden z pierwszych eksplorował brzmienie drum&bass (z tego co czytałem współcześni rozpatrywali ten album jako element nurtu jungle). Słuchając, myślałem momentami o Massive Attack, czasami o amerykańskich ulicznych perkusistach, grających na wiadrach, miskach i kawałkach blachy. Czasami wracałem myślami do "Endtroducing" DJ Shadowa. Tytułowe "Timeless" trwa 21min, a mimo to nie dłuży się. Płynie po wielu płaszczyznach, przemierza kolejne dźwiękowe krajobrazy. Zresztą wiele jest utworów, które trwają dużo dłużej, niż typowe radiowe kawałki, sam album (w wersji, której słuchałem) trwa prawie dwie godziny, a mimo to ani przez chwilę nie czułem się znużony (a kilkakrotnie narzekałem na tych łamach na albumy trwające dłużej, niż godzinę). Wydaje mi się, że jest to album, który wymaga naprawdę dobrych głośników/słuchawek, żeby poczuć jego głębię i zakres. Ja niestety słuchałem tego z telewizora, więc pewnie mogłem wyciągnąć więcej z tego doświadczenia. Bardzo mocne 4.

This project has only revealed to me that drum and bass my be my least favorite genre. It's just way too repetitive for way too long. And I've gotten so many of them and they are all exactly the same
So to preface, I am not very familiar with drum and bass music. When I was a kid exploring music on newgrounds, the drum and bass music section always seemed repetitive and boring. So ever since then I’ve never taken time to listen to any professional/established d’n’b artist, until I got to this album. And I really enjoyed the first song. It’s TWENTY ONE MINUTES LONG, but it somehow manages to not over stay its welcome. It has a multitude of beat switches and tone changes, and it keeps finding ways to maintain your attention. Genuinely a great song. I also liked the third and twelfth song, but this is where the problem comes in. In-between those 3 songs are just a mess of the same sound. Like it’s not nails on a chalkboard offensive to the ears, but it’s so atmospheric that nothing stands out about the other tracks. They all blend together to create an hour and 18min long loading music for the 35mins of music that’s truly remarkable. Strangely however, I don’t hate this album, it’s very relaxing and “sound-scapey”, it’s grand and epic in tone. I just think that the atmospheric background music just overstays its welcome. Like if the album was 6 songs and just under an hour long, I think this album could’ve been a 4 or even a 5. But I think this album is definitely worth your time if you already are a big fan of drum and bass or if you have never really listened to it before. Goldie is probably the way to go for an entry into the genre.

A D&B album under two hours! Hooray! -SEA OF TEARS SAMPLES My Life in the Bush of Ghosts- which I only know from starting this website -listened to the whole thing on my computer speakers, but hearing select tracks on headphones is a much trippier experience -Maybe I was just in a bad mood when it came to Roni Size; the other drum and bass offerings have been more enjoyable than I expected. The high pitched alarm sound in “Jah the Seventh Seal” was probably my least favourite thing about the album, but I don’t even mind the rest of that track. I thankfully split this up in its discs throughout the day. Earlier I listened to disc 1, and now I'm finishing up disc 2. It really helps recognize how fucking good all these songs are, because I'm no longer being bogged down by that 2 hour runtime. This is some fine jungle work, I really wish I could dock points for the length but it's too good to bring myself to giving it any less than a 5. Still think Roni Size is best DnB, but this one is also amazing. Also why the hell is Inner City Life on here 3 times 😂
It would be a hell of a lot better if it wasn’t so. Fucking. Long. Actually works pretty well as background music, but really doesn’t work as an almost two-hour album. I got bored of this pretty quickly. The title is actually more apt than I expected. It’s tough to place a year on this, has a retro future feeling. Would work well if it was like a quarter of the length.

Timeless sure takes a lot of time to sit through at almost 2 hours of runtime. Why are all these 90s DnB albums so incredibly long? It's dance music you can't really dance to that isn't all that fun to pay your attention to either. There's some nice moments on here and I can see myself putting on a song or 2 from here but as an album it really doesn't work. Adrift is also an atrocity.
Pretty mind numbingly bad. I can’t wait for the day that I finally get an album that’s not electronic. Definitely not an album to choose when you just want to sit down and enjoy some music. Liked the beginning groovy sounds of A Sense of Rage but then of course it immediately got ruined by the ear searing repetitive nature of the album. At first liked State of Mind but then I saw that it was 7 min long, just unnecessary, like the majority of the album. Maybe I could handle this album if it was half the time and no songs were longer than 3 minutes.

This triggers my misophonia, it’s almost like 11 minutes of torture every single song. I get it, that if I was on ecstasy in a club in 1995 England it would have been cool and I’m sure it’s important to some people but I don’t like it. These songs give off more of a Heroin Trainspotting vibe, though.
When you're in commute, you're gonna need something to assist you in movement. Whether it is the start of the day, in the middle of it or towards the end, something of a considerable length is required to help make sense of the sights around you. The rush of the crowds and the magnitude of its mutable size, jostling amongst one another to get to their varying destinations. Music like this helps with that. Whether he intended it or not, Goldie helped crystallize a sound that had been bubbling under the surface for some time and, regardless of what would become of it, it wound up being what it was ultimately called: timeless.

Vitas meets Grimes meets Meow Wolf Omega Mart ambient music. Certainly put me in a weird headspace while eating mixed nuts at 1 am. I know, I know this was groundbreaking... and probably somewhat inspired the aformentioned music (that I like a lot) but... 3/5. Would listen to again at 1 am, but probably not on purpose. It's another one of those albums where I feel like I heard the whole thing by the first song, then confirm that I have indeed heard the whole thing by the third song, and then listen to the rest of the album.

Yes, of course, "jungle" went out of fashion only a few years after this release, which is why I can understand *some* of the criticisms addressed to this double-CD album. I know a guy around 1995 who had sold his relatively impressive indie-rock record collection to buy loads of expensive drum and bass white label vinyls. He then moonlit as a DJ in that style in my small hometown. You could sense he really thought this was the music of the future. Oh, the irony. That bloke left town around the time the chips fell, and no one ever saw him again. I wonder what became of him.... Not that he was *totally* wrong to feel this enthused, however. Drum and bass sounds may have aged to an obvious extent (most electronic subgenres do), yet that idea of using sped-up hip hop breakbeats to make dancers lose their shit is still very influential today. See the nascent footwork subgenre, or how drum and bass patterns themselves resurface in the works of artists of all stripes, at least once in a while... So maybe you shouldn't heed the folks in this app section when they fail to reckon how pivotal this album is for electronic music at large. The three-part title track alone (especially its opening section "Inner City Life") exemplifies everything that can be labelled as "iconic" in Goldie's music, beyond the typically hectic rhythm patterns themselves. You've got the ominous synthetic layerings, the soulful vocals of Diane Charlemagne (RIP), and the crushing descending basslines blasting out of your speakers. And after that epic 20-minute-opener, whose length is perfectly justified to either convey a cinematic mood (this type of music can be *very* cinematic), or to convey the feeling of what's going on on a dancefloor during a wild night out, Goldie then switches and rearranges.all the different pieces of that initial puzzle in various manners, mostly to good or great effects. Apart for an all-too-safe trip-hop-adjacent "State Of Mind" (supposed to be a breather in the tracklist, but actually a lengthy snoozefest), everything indeed sounds pitch-perfect on the first disc. "Saint Angel" and "This Is A Bad" most specifically slap hard. The second disc starts strong with "A Sense Of Rage", but then the album loses its way and its momentum a little, unfortunately. When Charlemagne's vocals reappear for some cuts, the whole thing sounds less imaginative overall, more like on an automatic pilot mode. Most of the compositions on the second part are actually older tracks and singles Goldie had written and recorded in the years leading to the album. It's still pretty impressive that, in that early work (a lesser one that yet turned him into a household name for specialized British dancefloors), the sound of the album was already fully-formed. Those cuts are not re-recordings, they were just remastered along with the subsequent tracks directly written for the album. And sonically speaking, you can't notice any difference between the two sorts of tracks. Of course, keeping the best material on a single CD would have created a stronger offering. But it's a reproach you can basically address to all double-albums out there. Now, decades after the fact, it feels nice to have all those early singles documented on the second disc. This is the sort of music that plays loud in crime series on TV, in shabby warehouses where the drug gangs are hanging out between cooking sessions. Because the series producers want to create the absolute most nerve wracking atmosphere so that we are all super happy when the first shots fall, the electricity drops out and all you hear is just shouting and guns. Which is an improvement over this music (thanks, cops). This music may be functional in crime series but I don't need it in my living room or in my too short life. There is something about it, mostly the breakbeat, that instantly makes me want to throw something through the window (and I am normally a very peaceful guy). The rest of the music is just very dull and unimaginative, with some cheap "orchestration". A hard 1 for me and definitely on my "1001 Albums you must avoid until you die (but may hear after if you believe in Hell)" list. Haven't been able to finish this, can't imagine listening to this without some form of sedation.
The fucking gall to have a song called the ‘Short Attention Span Edit’ on an album that is two fucking hours long. No album needs to be 2 hours long. Most films don’t need to be 2 hours long. Timeless’ biggest issue is that it’s genuinely quite boring. So boring that I’m struggling to come up with anything interesting to say about how boring it is. But also not boring enough to really work up any hate for it. It’s the audio equivalent of that joke from Cheers: ‘The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference.’ ‘Whatever, I don’t care.’

Knew within 5 min of the 20 min opening track that this was going to be a 1. I don't think there's been a single dnb album on this list that I've found enjoyable in the slightest.

This is pretty timeless if you like those atmospheric mood music tracks that don’t go anywhere but leave you a bit trancelike.
This is a wild album to include on this list. I don’t dislike it overall, and it’s hard to believe someone was making drum and bass like this 30 years ago, truly a very influential album. The opening track is shockingly soulful, and the breakbeats throughout really work for me. I’m not entirely sure it needs to be 21 minutes long, but as a DJ, this would be the absolute perfect bathroom break track. “Saint Angel” hits a little more aggressively, and feels like it would be at home in a goth club, the matrix soundtrack, or an edgy credit card commercial. I dig it though. “State of Mind” is where the album starts to lose me a little bit, it feels more pop than dance music, and I’m not overly into it. The rest of the album is sort of hit and miss, I’m not sure it’s really worth reviewing this one track by track, but it’s got some highs and lows for sure. The piano in “You And Me” feels very Felix Da Housecat’s remix of “Sinnerman” in a very good way. I don’t know if I’d actively listen to this again, but if I was for some reason ever forced to start DJing again, this could be a good album to keep in my back pocket for just the right show. 3*
I have to admit I first balked when I saw the AOTD is nearly two hours of 1995 drum n bass, but I actually found this pretty enjoyable to zone out and do repetitive tasks to. This album makes nice use of some pretty funky/soulful samples and strikes a nice balance between letting the song meander and returning to its central motif. The 20-minute opening track takes a little while to get there, but it settles into a nice groove, and I liked both of the abridged remixes at the end as well. I swear there's some Mario Kart samples in here. I wouldn't put this on in its entirety again but any particular song would fit in nicely to a shuffle of jungle/dnb on the rare occasion when I put that on for menial tasks. 6/10

Love drum and bass, but this album is too long. I dont even mind the 20 minute song much, it's pretty good actually. But half of the songs couldve been cut easily and the album wouldve improved immensely. Sad. I was happy to see another DnB album on this list (a little diversity after a shitload of britpop or obscure american bands from the 60s) but Ive got to be honest and say that this album just doesn't hit the 5 star level.
Let's dig into some possible explanations for the title of this album: Possible storyline: The shitness of this album breaks the space-time continuum, breaking the laws of physics and time as we know it. All that remains is this album echoing throughout the ruins of the universe. Timeless. Alternate suggestion: naming it Endless instead of Timeless, cause it's so long and terrible it seems like it never ends. I couldn't finish it.

I've been aware of Goldie as an artist and personality for ages, but never actually known what his actual music was like. I didn't realise he was so influential in the DnB scene. I guess this is what it is. It's not something I'll ever celebrate or go back to. I'm not bothered by the super long tracks as so many are. I vibe with it well enough, and it works well enough in the background while cracking on with work.

Expected heavy metal or prog from the cover art and was surprised to hear what sounds like some kind of partly acoustic drum and bass variation with vocals. Hard to decide if I like this. Not an instant hit, but there is something interesting to it! Too long for a re listen at the moment. Giving it a 3 due to the varying quality of the tracks. Would probably have given it a 4 if it was shortened down by curating the track list more.
I like the choppy rhythms of drum and bass/jungle whatever other subgenres of britronica are based on chopping up and reassembling the amen beat or whatever. Not sure how one dances to it. Apparently his son knifed somebody!? Classic pom ignorance. Anyway the choppy stuffs fun, but there are too many beatless interludes and the whole damn thing, at least what's on spotify and appears to correlate with the wiki track list, is too damn long.
2 hours of electronica?!? I'm exhausted already. This is incredibly boring. A 21 minute song to kick things off is not an auspicious start. These dance albums have to be the least listened to albums, start to finish, ever. No one just puts on a Goldie record and lets it play and listens to the music. This is background music at an overpriced salon or in a restaurant that has uncomfortable chairs and $16 drinks. The first song is hard to endure and there is another hour and a half of music to go. This music must only be good on E. This is "boots and pants" music. This is more a trail of endurance than an evaluation of an album. This album is terrible, one of the worst so far. The ambient waves and one of the most annoying electronic seagull noises imaginable in Sea of Tears makes this a rival for one of the worst songs I've listened to so far. This is all so repetitive, every song, every minute, just boring beats. 7 minutes at the end are remixes from the US release, not the initial release so that is great news. Every song is exactly as bad as every other one in it's own special way. The only thing that makes one better than another is the length (shorter is better). Still 27 minutes left and I cannot wait for this to be over. I will continue to listen but the Kenny G sax in Adrift is the end of my observations. This isn't dance music, it's not jazz, it's just awful. This is like music from a dream sequence in a porno movie. I'm not sure if I like the fake jazz songs less than the dance songs. In any case, they are both awful.
You know that scene in the matrix 2? Where they have the rave orgy? Or in Blade where they gave the rave with blood spraying in them? This record reminded me of that. Except instead of a rave orgy being sprayed with blood, your subjected to this God awful record. Nothing about this record is good. Absolutely nothing. If you think otherwise, you don't have good taste in music. You like background noise. Background noise that is repetitive and soulless. Even when the songs with vocals come in... They are absolutely trash! Sweaty matrix orgy trash.
Electronic Dance music generally make for bad albums because they are made for a clubs or bars. I could vibe to this in a small dimly lit cocktail bar but as an album this is just background music. Goldie as an artist has had a impact on the Dance scene of the 90s but that necessarily don't mean that the album made the same impact as the artist. Not bad but not a must listen by any means

If the Hackers soundtrack had less enjoyable music riddled with poorly sampled drum sounds, this is what it would sound like. There were a few ok spots, but I can't fathom how people could ever have listened to drum n bass as a primary musical style.
Some great EDM, not what I was expecting at all (I think I got Goldie mixed up with Goldie Lookin Chain!), so it took me a while to get into it, but I did enjoy what I heard.
Played this a lot when it came out, and it's not quite as good as I remembered.
Track 1 is 21 minutes long - there is no way I'll end up listening to this entire album. True to form - there were two songs left when I tapped out. I'll allow space in my heart for the idea that maybe those two songs woulda turned this around for me.
Skitters about with abandon, but ultimately this once again falls into the category of PlayStation load screen music.

As a lifelong fan of Drum and Bass and it's derivatives I'm really happy to see some recognition on this list. Goldie was a pioneer of the old school style of the early to mid 90s that paved the way for the artists of today. Clean breakbeats, interesting bass lines, and great vocals make this a classic DnB album to show someone what the genre was all about.

Timeless?! More like Timefull! It's so long! Way too long for songs that don't really go anywhere and are repetitive. Still prefer this over Daft Punk though
Idk what context I’m missing to understand this one. The drum/rhythm seemed the exact same on every single track. It sounds like there are only two speeds these tracks alternate between and it gets tiring quick. The length of this album is an extra fuck you. Rating: 1.2

For it being one of earliest examples of Electronica, it is odd. It's first and title track being 21 MINUTES (!!!) and it mostly being quiet is odd. The rest of the tracks do feel like they belong in a Cyberpunk style RPG as background music, but it definitely something I would pursue outside of doing this list. I'd give it a 3/10.
While the music may be Timeless, the album art surely is not.
I have listened to and enjoyed this before a lot. Usually when under the influence... In the cold neon light of the office on a Thursday morning - not sure it had the same impact.
That was great, I'd never heard the album or knew Goldie. Going to enjoy it on long bike rides.

Before I put this on I’m praying it’s better than Roni Size (gave that a 3 and should of been a 2) This is definitely more soothing and chill. Other than length of the album I really enjoy it. Light 3 could’ve moved up more if it was condensed into best tracks
Couldn't get past the first 20 min track. Listened to bits and pieces of the other tracks, and Goldie seems very talented, but just not my jam...Too repetitive and aimless sounding.
Oh this is such a cool album, incredible to vibe out to!! Dare I say…… an enduring album. Immune to time.. etc…
Loved this! Very sleek and futuristic. Took me a while to get through because of its length but I find the repetition and ambiance quite intriguing.

Hmm... okay. This is an album alright. Here, we have Timeless by Goldie, which is the earliest of three albums on this list from a genre known as drum and bass, a genre categorized by its characteristic drums (often in the form of break beats) and its bass. Despite this being the first one I've gotten from the generator, I have listened to the other two drum and bass albums on the list already. I did those ones because they were over two hours each, and were thus albums that I felt the need to listen to when I had free time so that I can do them during days where I have as much time to get through them as possible. Maybe I should've extended the minimum time to include this one. Let's move past that though. Back to the genre itself, this album is seen as a seminal album for the genre, giving it an argument for inclusion in this list. So, is this album truly Timeless? No, but that doesn't mean it's not good. I think this album's alright. Is it a bit too long for my liking? Yes, it is. However, the contents of this album are pretty good. This would've been a great album for me to do homework to if I had homework tonight, which I didn't. The sound is somewhat interesting. It's certainly more interesting than other 90s British electronic albums, that's for sure. The singing that shows up sometimes is neat. It's kind of Björk-like in a way. The sampling is good. I do have problems with this album, don't get me wrong. The pacing is kind of wack. The longest song, which is the first one by the way, is 21 minutes long, while the shortest one, "Angel," is just under 5 minutes long. That makes some songs drag too long while others feel tiny in comparison. Still, I respect this album for doing something different at the time. It may not be timeless or faultless, but it's still a solid album that I can see the appeal of. 3/5.
Ah yes, another electronic album that reinvented the genre from the 90's. You may not believe this but Goldie is British. Yes, the book with the hard British lean includes an artist from Britain that was groundbreaking. What's most groundbreaking is this album starts off with a 21 minute song. Most artists want to capture your attention immediately, but Goldie prefers to lure his audience to sleep as that may be the only way to get a person to listen to the whole thing. Plus, if the listener is asleep then perhaps another Goldie album will come on and receive more plays as well. The drum and bass genre is clearly not for me.
