Good for what it is… 3/5
Solid effort from Buck Owens, there is definitely a lot of influence that was plucked from this particular style, being replicated by country artists for the next 5+ decades to come. Super influential, I really enjoyed the few songs where the tempo slowed down and his voice was able to hit those low moments. Liked it, pretty nice little twang to it. 3.5/5
Quite good Country Album. Origins of the “Bakersfield Sound". (6/10) FT: I’ve Got a Tiger By the Tail, Act Naturally, Falling for you
Fun stuff. I learned about the "Bakersfield Sound", a genre of which this album is a prime example, in one of the episodes in Andrew Hickey's OUTSTANDING podcast series -- really, I cannot recommend it highly enough -- 'A History Of Rock Music In 500 Songs'. Although I don't listen to a lot of country, Western, or similar genres, I do like some of the music in that style, and this album is enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed 'Memphis' and the lead guitar in 'Wham Bam' is great. I'll bet these are fun songs to sing with friends.
I hated this much less than I thought I would. So.e pretty decent songs and catchy guitar
It’s country music
This that good country
3.5 stars. Good early country. Standout from original album (not including "Act Naturally") is his "Memphis" cover
it was a country music album
Appreciate where a lot of country comes from buts it’s not for me
Not bad for country
Not for me
Catchy
This was a nice album! The title track, "Streets of Laredo," "Wham Bam," and "The Band Keeps Playin' On" were my fave tracks on this one.
Sometimes repetitive, but enjoyable. Not the worst country out there. Favorites: "I've Got a Tiger By the Tail", "Wham Bam", "Cryin' Time"
Very good electric country, really dynamic, thanks to its backbeat.
Good country album, but nothing extraordinary.
Good country album, nothing special, but honnest work
A very nice country album, very representative of the genre. Pleasant listening. Nothing that stands out either, though.
I can’t help thinking of HeeHaw when I listen to this. I do think it’s a good example of how C&W music is different than more traditional country music. I think it’s fine but I am not adding it to my collection.
This is such a left field album for me that I didn’t know how to digest it. But it grew on me as I was listening: sure, country music isn’t my thing, but there’s good music to be experienced through this album. Call it an interesting surprise, but let’s agree to keep it a one off. P.S. “First thing is matrimony next thing is alimony” (from Wham Bam) surely qualifies for a top cynicism award.
Well quite a fun and light record - nothing particularly amazing but a solid listen.
Nemam ništa protiv ove glazbe.
I’m kind of a sucker for the rock-a-Billy stuff
Refreshing to hear an album that was completely unknown to me
I liked this more then I thought I would
Was alright.
Good classic country that is just fun to listen to. Nothing to special on it, but it just puts a smile on your face and is an easy listen.
I listen to album a few times and I've wanted to love it but it never seems to stick. If I'm going to listen to Buck Owens it's going to be a compilation album.
Old timey honky tonk but surprisingly enjoyable. 6/10
countryzão das antiga, legalzinho
So cliche
Country. Ni fu ni fa.
Nice
Somewhere in the multiverse is a me quietly wiping down a bar off an isolated state road while two people play darts off in the corner and this album plays overhead
Not my thing at all but it's was good enough for a 2.5
Surprisingly liked this a lot, despite it being very country
A lot of good not great songs. Some great guitar parts but nothing too dynamic
I'm generally not a fan of country music, but I don't mind some older country from the 50's and 60's. On this Buck Owens record, you can hear how influential this music was to aspiring musicians at the time. The tunes are fun and even I can listen to some hillbilly music sometimes.
6/10 nice performance but I didn’t like many of these songs
6/10. Seemed like pretty solid old timey County. Not really my style, but well executed
Just kinda fine. 6/10
Very influential album. Songs are good, but very old honky-Tonk country.
I don’t listen to a ton of country, but I have always had a soft spot for Buck Owens. He has a crisp, classic sound with catchy melodies and a vocal style that’s really heartfelt and earnest. Not every song on “Tiger” is a winner, but several of his very best are on here. Overall, this was a breath of fresh air. Fave Songs: I've Got a Tiger By the Tail, Cryin’ Time, Let the Sad Times Roll On, Fallin’ For You, Trouble and Me
It's alright, kinda interesting with the progression of songs
I am familiar with Buck Owens and some of the tunes on this album. It is some classic country, which I have some appreciation for, but it doesn’t usually thrill me. I had a job when I was younger where I spent many hours dubbing carts of classic country tunes. I enjoyed the exposure to that generation of music, but it did become boring at times. I think this album caused some flashbacks to those days. Perhaps once in a while I will call up a few of these tunes, but as an album listen, I don’t think so.
This is C&W at its most original, not my favourite genre but still not offensive. I find the songs very “samey” guitar, vocals and the occasional violin/viola. Interesting to see how C&W has changed in 50 years, Lady antibellum, John Mayer and Taylor swift owe their success to this but are a million miles away from this
Thought I'd like it more than I did. I do appreciate this old country-western style though, but nothing stuck for me.
Buck sure does a lot of rollin' and fallin', as well as occasionally dyin', on this record. Sad times roll on, as do the good; fallin' into love and out of it. Someone needs to reorder this into a consistent narrative. Ain't gonna be me, though.
This was probably the most standard 60s country album I've ever heard. It was by no means bad and had some good tracks but nothing stood out to me. With Marty Robbins, I'll always remember his biggest songs but I likely won't remember as much about this album. Fav songs: streets of laredo, cryin' time
Enjoyable but slightly *too* country, you know? I really like the title track
One word Wednesday = dated Country pop rock crooning like this was popular with my dad, so I heard some of this growing up. Not my favorite, and I don’t think that the covers measure up to the originals. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Listworthy = 👍
this is the kind of old country music I actually can enjoy. Really liked the sad country ballads at the start, but a whole album of them (even only 35 minutes) still felt long. These tunes need to be interspersed with some other stuff.
Buena voz. Estilo retro. Country americano en su pura esencia.
Twangy as all hell. Works great if you don't take it too seriously.
Yep. Liked that, a good ol' slice of honky tonk.
Totally. It my thing. But it has a few songs that seem like they've become standards. 3.5 stars
I guess I didn't mind this at all, though it's not so much much thing, my Countey palate being pretty limited. It's certainly well done for what it is, though I think the lyrics are over-reliant on a particular style of wordplay, and the sort of emotional range is pretty shallow.
Not my favorite, but a cool southern/western sound. Tons of steel guitar, would be fun to listen to at a camp sight or something haha
hmm, not a huge fan of country but it was good. 2.5 / 2.7?
Not really my vibe, but glad I listened. Might throw on at a pool party.
I liked the album and could hear a lot of previous country influence from some of my fav artists in the genre. Buck has a very unique voice which made this an interesting listen, but I'm pretty picky with country so I'll rate 3/5
It was alright for the type of music.
Unusual music style. Enjoyable to listen to, will probably not listen again.
A decent Country Western album, but not my favorite country sound at all. There were some pretty nice tunes on here though!
Nota: 5/10 Data: 16/01/2024
Ole Buck Owens.... was a fan to his music
Really fun listen this. Would listen again.
if anything sounds exactly what you think it will by the cover.... 60's country. Some good / some shite. 3
3.4 - Twangy. Classic country meets pop songwriting. Amazing electric guitar solos, pretty slide guitar fills, sweet vocal harmonies. Buck Owens sings with that clear country twang. Not so rich with storytelling, more about conveying a feeling within a 2-3 minute pop song format.
I got a tiger by the tail, es como country
false
A little cheesy, but I had fun. This is the kind of country that I ca respect, even if it’s not something I would listen to all the time Favorite tracks: “I’ve Got a Tiger By the Tail,” “Falling For You,” and “Act Naturally”
would never have listened on my own but it was enjoyable.
I like the guitar and slide guitar. Feels like I’m eating at a BBQ restaurant.
Solid, but maybe a little too old times for me
Pretty bouncy
A bit too simple to be amazing, but still a good listen. I like his sound, but his lyrics are a bit wanting. But CRYING TIME.... so good
an oldie
Very "of the era". A bit like Marty Robbins, but less catchy.
This was a great classic country album! It was fun and poppy, but then also had some sad but tough cowboy songs.
a fun country album.
ive got a tiger by the tail is a banger
Pretty stock standard country/western. One or two songs are indistinguishable from a few others, and there's one track that really feels like a Sam Cooke track. Not bad, just a few tracks I really remember. Favorite tracks: "If You Fall Out of Love With Me", "Act Naturally"
A little bit too yee-haw for me I'm afraid. I've liked, and been surprised by, most of the country albums on the list. Less so this one.
I like classic country but this guys voice is something else.
4/10
It’s so so ok
It was fine. Honky Tonk isn't really my speed unfortunately
Reminded me of that photo of Jack on a tiny horse
other than feeling like it could be in fallout new Vegas this had no redeeming qualities
Heeeeeeehaaaaaw!!
It’s not exactly bad, but it’s so tacky. The only people who can sit through this album are probably old grandpas with yellow, nearly-fallen-out teeth.
it was fine enough for something of this jandra
Dated and forgettable. Kind of miserable. Got some immersive moments, but to me it falls a bit flat. Listenable but generic. 2/5
MEH
Wham Bam was enlightening to me, I always assumed the saying originated from Suffragette City
I can handle some country, but that was just too basic for me
A very different type of music for me.
Listening session: june 11th, while getting ready and making lunch Listened to before: no Thoughts: this album must be nice if you’re American, but I’m not and I’ve never liked country music. So this album was definitely not my cup of tea Favourite track: Streets of Laredo
Yeehaw
Not the worst country album I've heard, as it has some songs that sound kind of charming, those being "I've Got a Tiger By the Tail", "Trouble and Me", "Wham Bam", "Fallin' For you", "We're Gonna Let the Good Times Rol", and "Memphis". Nonetheless, there are still country, so I think these tracks are decent at best. The rest of the album are just boring slow songs. Nothing much to say, as this is just country being country and me not being a fan of the style.
A perfectly fine 1960s country album that sounded quite fine. It had some nice covers (Streets of Laredo and Act Naturally) that I like and that wham bam song is weird.
No thank you
Before this I didn't know what Bakersfield sound meant. Knowledge is my reward.
Buck Okay — this is representative of an American Country sound from history that should be preserved somewhere. It's California country and not Nashville country. I appreciate the clarity, open room energy and stronger beat. While it's not my jam overall, it's mercifully brief and not so egregious as to warrant only one star. To hear a couple of songs from this smartly placed on a playlist or compilation next to something contemporary but sharing some resonance would not be so bad.
#145/1001 🇺🇸 Another country album that leaves me a bit cold. Whilst it only lasted half an hour, i was mildly bored and a bit irritated by it. Best track: Streets of Laredo.
It was ok country/traditional vibes I wonder if he coined the phrase wham bam thank you mam?
Not a fan
Did not get a chance to listen much. So playing some catch-up and I didn't relish this one.
I don't know nothing about country music, this was a pleasant romp, not sure I would reach out again.
Run for the hills Kori!! Bahhh, dated, rudimentary. Yes yes, historically important, but unfortunately, I cannot look past the fact that this had the audio & mixing quality of a toddler grinding sand between their teeth. The Louis Prima album on this list was made before this album and sounded 10 times as good.
Not for me, dawg. Reminds me of tense family dinners at Cracker Barrel. Nope!
Mid-60's country music. This album includes a lot of country standards (covers). I'm not sure why this is on the list. Not my thing. No thank you.
In a nutshell: radio country. Out of the 1960s country albums recorded in Bakersfield California, this second best one on this list. I think it's in the book because this was the breakthrough into popular music. Personally, I prefer Marty Robbins. Overall: 4/10
It's alright.
He had a good voice, but each song was too repetitive. Country music similar to this has this tendency to have this bass(?) guitar play the same note throughout the song with no deviation. They all end the same too.
country bumpkin af

I’ll be honest, Buck, that tiger tail in your hands is probably the least of your problems. Neither whining country & western, nor that hideous suit are going to make you popular with current audiences.
Look, most of the tracks are < 2 minutes long. That's all I have to say about that.
En general no soy muy del country, no me parece malo pero it's not my cup of tea. Ni me gustó ni me disgustó.
Didn’t move me
nothing special
This is a perfectly fine album for what it is, and I can see why it’s included here. You can definitely hear the influence on later country artists, even if it’s not something I’d ever choose to put on myself. That said, my 4-year-old enjoyed a couple of the songs, which was a nice bonus.
I was counting the minutes til the record ended. Country's really not my forte.
Old school country
2 out of 5. Still better than modern country.
Not for me
Not my favorite kind of music, and without having some deeper theme or something that stood out, I didn't care much for it. Nothing particularly wrong about it, though.
Very cheesy honky tonk country that somehow seems to take itself seriously. Mercifully brief
Fiddle and steel guitar driven C&W is why I don’t like the genre.
Liked the lyrics, hate country.
Niet super memorabel
Oh no. Oh god no.
Country music. Based on the Spotify play counts, a rather obscure Country album. For Country music fans only.
Not a fan. Not horrible though.
He should work on his attachment style. 2
Twangy country - while this was not my jam I can see why it influenced country around the point this came out.
I get the historical significance, but this didn’t age well. Very simple, honkytonk spongebobesque country music. Not for me
Nah. I lost a whole week waiting for this to end, you can't convince me that was only 32 minutes.
Trouble And Me
60’s Country
Gods, please save me from further country experience.
When I joined the police cadets in 1970 I shared a room with a lad who loved this kind of stuff. Not seen him for years but every time I hear a Country song I think of him and how he sang them on the top of his voice. We couldn’t have been more diverse bed fellows as I was well into prog. Whilst we never fell out about it I could never understand how a lad my age liked Country. I thought it was for old buggers. Of course I was wrong on that because now that I am an old bugger I still don’t like Country. Unlike back then I do give it a chance but only when a Country album pops up on this list. This album was quite enjoyable in a quaint way. Gave me a chance to think again of my old mate singing about lonesome trees in the desert and mamma’s pumpkin pies. 2/5 1/4/26
Upbeat Bakersfield country built on twangy electric guitars, pedal steel, brisk drums, and confident, bright, distinctly nasal vocals in a classic country style moves with tight, catchy efficiency. Listening feels like riding a fast, dusty backroad where every turn repeats a familiar pattern without much variation. The result is lively and engaging at first, but its repetitious nature limits lasting impact.
Eh just not really the country for me
A gateway record for people trying to understand country’s roots. Interesting to learn the schism between this and the more polished "Nashville sound" and it's lineage to alt country today. Doesn't mean I'm going to reach for it other than on a desert road trip
historically really notable for how much this has influenced country music, and probably the best thing that has come out of bakersfield, california. the violin rendition of "a maiden's prayer" is really lovely and i'm always a sucker for some pedal steel guitar action, but this album is a bit more mixed than i'd like which is heavily because it's the production is Not good. if this were graded on a curve it'd maybe be closer to a four, but on the whole i think that this is decent. it's goofy music and it's good fun.
I have a real soft spot for honky-tonk music, its fun. It's almost a parody of itself, but it works. the titular "I've got a Tiger By the Tail" matches that energy perfectly. Unfortunately it doesn't really keep it up throughout the album and is a little uneven as a result. Songs like Fallin' for you are great, but I've never been a fan of slower Honky-tonk songs or when they're taking themselves a bit too seriously. Most of this sounds like the filler songs you'd put in a Fallout game, but specifically the newer ones like Fallout 4 or 76. That's not bad by any means, but it's hardly a standout. I was going to rate this a 3 but its more of a very strong 2.
I'm sure it's a classic album that's important in the country cabin but felt more parodic rather than good
Country is just not my thing.
2.0 - Weak
This didn't age well.
The first album that was hard for me to get through to the end. I understand the legacy, but it honestly sounds more like a parody of country. Act Naturally’ gets a small plus from me because it reminds me of movie X. 3/10
Nae my cup of hickery shit lye
Not a fan of this album at all but I 1000% can see myself wandering the fallout wastelands to the first song.
Bad twangy folk country from 60 years ago. Gross.
He looks like Jimmy Carter. I am not a country person and would rather not hear this again.
Mediocre country is a staple of this list, it seems.
Forsvant forbi uten at jeg tenkte over det
Hokey country music
This is my grandfathers bluegrass music. It’s a good history listen but I can’t see myself revisiting any of it away from this project.
Look, this is fine. The highlight is the non-Ringo version of 'Act Naturally.' But this is really an old skool country record you can put on and forget about. Nothing mind blowing here.
Give me some Johnny Cash or modern alt. Country/Americana instead of this please. Mid 60s - 1965, Beatles with 'Rubber Soul', Dylan's 'Bringing It All Back Home',Johnny Cash has 'Orange Blossom Special' and yet Buck Owens is singing about swinging a tiger by the tail. Mediocre country. 2 out of 5 stars only.
The predominantly UK-based music critics that populated this list sure do have a fetish for early Country & Western music. I will not my own bias - C&W (and country in particular) is not a genre I luck much at all. And this album, while inoffensive, really does nothing for me. There's a tried and true formula to this music, and if the music describes the world you live in and/or this is music you grew up with this I can understand why you'd enjoy it. Other than that...it's pretty meh. The only thing this album seems to have inspired is people making more of this music. As you can tell, not for me.
Did a good job of making me go to sleep during a 13 hour flight
It’s ok. Not my thing.
Ugh, another one of these C&W wonders
Isn't "I've got a tiger by the tail" the "cleaner" version of a very VERY racist song line? I really should have disallowed country from this project for myself; I rarely enjoy these. Highlight: act naturally (because of the beatles, ngl)
Don’t know enough to know why this is on list. Sounds like hundreds of other things from this era to me. It was fine
So there's some classics on here, but I have to say most of the really solid ones are done better by other folks. Has a nice throwback feel to it but if I want old-timey country/western twang there's much better options on this list.
2,3 Highlights: Wham Bam, If You Fall Out Of Love With Me
Surprised at how long I listened to this
I've Got a Tiger By The Tail - 3/5 Trouble and Me - 2.5/5 Let the Sad Times Roll On - 2/5 Wham Bam - 2.5/5 If You Fall Out of Love With Me - 2.5/5 Fallin' For You - 3/5 We're Gonna Let the Good Times Roll - 2.5/5 The Band Keeps Playin' On - 2.5/5 Streets of Laredo - 3/5 Cryin' Time - 2/5 A Maiden's Prayer - 2.5/5 Memphis - 3/5 Pretty standard rockabilly country. Nothing really special but it's a decent album regardless. Production is very muddy at points where the vocals are drowned out by the music. Apparently this way a fairly influential album but I didn't really see it that way. Guess I'm not deep into the country scene or whatever. Overall: 2/5 Favorites: I've Got a Tiger By The Tail, Streets of Laredo, Memphis
Its ait, but not very special to me.
It's... country music. I like some country music. This one is fine, but I didn't quite make it through.
Not my thing but cool for the style of album
fine
I feel like my grandpa would have loved this fellow. It’s a little to honky tonk for me, but some lyrics are hilarious. Wham Bam is a particular favourite!
Not an old timey country music fan, but a lot of very recognizable songs
This guy’s not doing so well with the ladies. Not totally sure I listened to the right version of the album? A crooner. Archetypal, but, for me, meh
I think it says something that my favorite song on this album has no lyrics (a maidens prayer). I find his voice quite annoying.
Buck and his Buckaroos have a tiger by the tail but Prince has a lion in his pocket that I’ve been told is ready to roar. Which is better? There’s only one way to find out… FIGHT!!!! *one minute later* Oh what a surprise it’s a massacre. Prince and his lion wins.
This one is probably a victim of it's age at this point. Just really basic, old country music. And unfortunately, with the exception of Act Naturally, this album is not Fallout-core.
A little too much Honky and not enough Tonk. I was suprised that "Act Naturally" was first sung by Buck vs Ring.
A lot of this sounded like a parody of a country album. Not for me I'm afraid. I understand that the covers of these songs are all better than the originals. So maybe a great songwriter, but not a fantastic album. 2⭐️
Nice mood and era sound. Not really for me. Streets of Laredo stood out to me.
Hokem Pokem cowboy shizzle. Very vanilla disposable stuff.
Mate, get the hint - she doesn't like you anymore. Move on. A couple of stars for the influence but the same song, with slightly different lyrics, in slightly different time, 14 times over, gets a bit tedious.
I don't care for it. It sounds old and hokey. That isn't its fault, really, time just did that to it.
Wham Bam, thank you mam. Is this where the phrase comes from?? Damn. Seems like this might have been groundbreaking, didn't mind listening to it, wasn't inspired, but it passed by without upsetting me particularly.
Its probably a country classis i dont know. The first half is rough to say the least. It gets listenable at the end but it doesnt hold enhough content to me. Some songs repeat the same message and i feel like if it cut half the songs and kept the good ones it would be a better album.
Not my type of music - too much of a country twang. A few standards, but I prefer versions by other artists.
I'd like to like this more but it sounds SO formulaic.
So I guess this is included because it’s ’Bakersfield country’ / hillbilly music. I’m hoping that means it’s the only one. Ploddy steel twangy guitars. Not my least favourite country but I don’t like it at all.
Didn't overstay it's welcome, which is nice.
I’ve always liked this song “Memphis” and for some strange reason enjoy his voice. But this is not something I can listen to maybe one song at a time can’t take a whole album of it.
I'm already struggling; this caught me on the wrong day. Playlist Additions: - I've Got a Tiger By the Tail - Wham Bam
Well, I wasn't sure whether I loved or hated this album until the cover of Memphis Tennessee came on and I remembered that there are NO Chuck Berry albums on this list! Chuck did that song so much better... Apparently Buck was a huge influence on Dwight Yoakam. And I'm supposed to be impressed?!
Wasn’t that into this
I like classic country but this seems a bit camp. When I think of Buck Owens, Hee Haw instantly comes to mind so it's hard to separate that from the artist. Plus honestly I'm team Roy Clark anyway :)
Šta reći da nije već rečeno... Mrzim country. Ovo se skoro može slušati. Eto.
Album No. 0074 on my list. I could imagine that this album is probably on this list because it is the classic country sound in perfection. Perhaps it was one of the first ones perfecting this sound or so, I dunno. Unfortunately, it sounds so much like country that it rather feels like a parody than anything serious. In addition, things are somewhat repetitive and a little dull. Maybe it's just not for me and country fans will be very happy to see this on the list. "I've Got A Tiger By The Tail", and "Memphis" were the songs I liked best and I'll add them to my playlist. 2/5 stars.
2 stars I’ll never listen to this again and a lot of it sounded the same to me. But I didn’t hate myself for listening to it and it was short so I appreciate it for that. Just does nothing for me.
Not my favorite style of country but it wasn't all bad. I did feel that the beats were really repetitive so I got tired of it even if it was just a half an hour long.
Haven't heard of him before. A couple of songs were fun but I find the overall vibe of some country albums overwhelming. This music is not popular here so listening to a whole album in this genre feels like I'm listening to a parody album and I can't shake that feeling off 2/5
3/10
Mercifully, none of the songs are very long
Not a country fan, but respect to the album that started the honky tonk sound and fun bit of trivia that Buck Owens recorded act naturally before the Beatles.
I have no ear for this style and era of music. Short but felt endless.
appreciate buck owens for inspiring so many bands i like, but they'll take it from here
and just like that I'm nine years old again and trapped in a grandparent's living room while my dad does yard work or something my least favorite of the three? versions of Streets of Laredo I've heard in this project although I appreciate the deep voice
Was mostly into the last few tracks but maybe that’s just when I started paying more attention to the instrumentation.
Hokem Pokem cowboy shizzle. Very vanilla disposable stuff.
Album 953 of 1089 Buck Owens - I’ve Got a Tiger By the Tail (1965) Rating : 2.5 / 5 I’ve always liked Buck and his Bakersfield sound - that twangy, straightforward, good-time country that just feels authentic. He’s got his own style, and it’s always easy to recognize. That said, this particular album didn’t hit quite as strong as I hoped. The songs are fine, the guitar work (especially from Buck himself and Don Rich) is enjoyable, but the production feels a bit thin. It’s listenable, sure, but it just never really gets going in a way that sticks. It’s one of those records that sits right in the middle - not bad by any means, but nothing that stands out either. Still, Buck Owens’ charm and easygoing delivery keep it from ever being a bad listen. Even when it doesn’t sparkle, it’s got that down-home feel that makes his music hard not to like.
i did not need to hear this before i die 💀
Really not my cup of tea, although I can appreciate the album and its impact it had on music at the time. That being said for me it wasn't very enjoyable, particularly as I'm not a fan of the style, and I had a hard time listening to this one.
I got this right after skunk anansie and its funny to juxtapose them against each other. Its hard to listen to this and understand what people who do or did enjoy this in earnest were up to in their lives. Im guessing there was a lot of beer and pretty much only white people. It probably was influential or something but it almost sounds like a parody. An odd listen that I just think doesn't hold up in time.
Not much for country in general but this old 60s twangy shit aint so bad. 2 stars
This album wasn’t for me a low 2 star for me
Cool old country sound. Not my type of album at all but I can respect it for what it is.
Howdy folks!!
Country music is generally abhorrent to me, having had it forced upon me from an early age. This wouldn't have been so bad of they music wasn't, without exception, shit. This album isn't the worst collection I've ever heard. At least it doesn't have any Irish moments. I won't pretend the band can't play, but I also won't deny the fact that slide guitar in country music gives me a violent, vomit reaction. You've heard one Country album, you've heard them all. Thankfully this one is free from the rampant racism, stupidity, religion, and fascism hidden under the guise of Patriotism which is the genre's modern hallmark.
This was kinda enjoyable, can’t really remember any of the songs though. Would I listen to it again? No
This is kinda hokey country, w pretty much zero gravitas that makes it stand for something.
Overall: 4/10 Not the worst thing I've ever heard. I just can't really get into Buck's voice if I'm being honest. The songs aren't really that special themselves and neither is the production of the album. That cover is also doing it no favours. Fav Song: The Band Keeps Playin' On
1,5/5
Me, yesterday morning : "Been a real run of dross the past couple of weeks. Come on algorithm, give me something good." Oh.
Recently this website offered me an album by The Boo Radleys. However, this guy looks like Boo Radley
I think this has just confirmed for me that I don’t like country music. Who knew a 2 minute song could feel so long?
Very dated. I’ve listened to it now. Move on.
Those 32 minutes really dragged. I don't mind (some) country but Buck Owens represents that hack-eyed type of country which makes my skin crawl. The sound of country fairs, drunk uncles, and clouds of cigarette smoke. No thank you.
Ziemlich spezieller Country garnicht mein Ding wieder interessante Geschichte hinter Buck Owen’s Crying Time ist besonders gut wenn man weiß das er 3 Ehen hatte aber keine davon gehalten hat in Amerika bestimmt weitaus mehr bekannt auch durch die TV Serie Hee Haw Special Mention: Crying Time Best song:I’ve Got a Tiger By The Tail Rating: 2,5 Ist halt country, aber nichtmal die krasse Art. Sehr langweiliges Ding.
It was fine. Standout songs: Let the sad times roll on The band keeps playing on
A little too much twang for me
Yo this dude is ugly as hell. This is glimmering honky tonk music. This is from an age when one could slap a waitress on the ass, punch a stranger in the face, line dance and go to sleep knowing you had a night well done. I’m actually a big fan of this album. It was a lot of fun. I knew that movies song. It’s a lot of fun!
Not really my jam but I could appreciate it and enjoy moments of it. 2.5
Doesn’t hold up
That twang is an acquired taste. I can only take so much.
So country it’s almost comical.
meh
*Easily* the least enjoyable country album on the list thus far. One-note, goofy-ass honky tonk with little to redeem it. At least I got a good laugh at the low notes on 'Streets of Laredo'.
2/5
The odd-album that (a) I certainly “needed to hear” to understand evolution of the country sound (making it a 3 or above) and (b) i did not like at all (making it a 1). I do not like the repeated bending of notes, on guitar and vocally. It’s a trick/technique that can be great, when used sparingly. But it’s not used to great effect here and they do Owens does it throughout the album. Influential, yes; but not a good influence on the country genre.
So this album popularlized the "Bakersville Sound" combination of rock and honky tonk country, which influenced more modern country sounds. You can really hear that guitar electric twang that is associated with this sound and at this point is considered synonymous with country music. It's why this album sounds like the most cliche country album of all time; but this album created what we know today to be the cliche. I like the Streets of Laredo with it's deep bass chorus that really sticks out. Surprised this song isn't bigger. Overall i'm not really a fan, but I can appreciate how this album has influenced an entire genre 60 years later - for better or worse.
Not great but easy listening
Absolutely not my style. Not the worst I've heard by any means, but I didn't like it.
Once you concede that all honky-tonk is novelty, the question is not “is this authentic?” but “how long before the joke palls?” These songs are not testimonies, they are sideshows, stunt doubles for lived experience. They are padded bras of emotion. Buck Owens declaims Streets of Laredo with chesty solemnity, the chest itself buzzing like a fridge. It sounds great, but it is also hilarious. We are supposed to hear gravitas. What we get is pantomime gravitas: a cowboy hat worn indoors. The band plays with immaculate snap, the production gleams, yet everything is excused by the wink. Honky-tonk never resists it. Owens flashes smile upon smile until charm curdles. Wink too often and too quickly, and you give yourself epilepsy. Owens, perpetually sparkling, is not far off. 2 Obviously there is a cap on how high you can rate this sort of thing because it isn’t quite asking to be taken seriously. But I did manage to listen to this twice. The band are great - I especially liked the fiddle playing on Maiden’s Prayer. Enjoyed Wham Bam a lot. I danced to it in the kitchen with the woman with whom I live in sin. 2/5
Felt longer than it was.
A bit cozy but outdated
Better than most country on the list But a decent looking rat is still a rat. Fine but shite
Very samey and dayed
Finally finished. Oof.
2.5 Fine! Not my fave type of music but I get why it’s important. Short, and not hard to listen to.
Title track immediately sent my father in law into a lather because his dad apparently had an 8-track of this album that was broken, so it was the only song that worked. He would rewind it and play it over and over. Needles to say, the rest of the album is completely forgettable.
Some decent songs on here, and I can see how it could have been influential. But overall it's "Wham bam, thank you mam, not for me"
no sé si me gusta el country
Very country.
country is not really my style but it's kind of a fun album
Hey, it's Ringo's song! Other than that little surprise at the end, this wasn't for me. I'm going to be generous and say it's a low two, not a one, but maybe that's just because I had Napalm Death recently.
I'm sure Buck has his devotees. But this is not even remotely in my wheelhouse. Chalk this 2 up to personal preference only and it should not take away from his influence...
Being a pioneer means diddly squat when the music you made sounds like donkey balls.
★★½
I mean it was kinda funny and didn’t over stay its welcome
Felt like I was in a honky-tonk twangy Tarantino movie, just keep that tiger away from my tail!
At least it was a quick listen! It might be great rockabilly but its not for me. Way too much slide guitar!
The recording production was pretty bad, plus not a genre I really enjoy to begin with. Listenable but won't get another spin from me.
A bit samey
Nah
Das Album I've Got A Tiger By The Tail wurde 1965 von der US-amerikanischen Countryband Buck Owens and His Buckaroos veröffentlicht.
They were songs.
It's country music. Always struggled to take country music as a serious music style and this is no different.
nice bit of geetar twanging
It's only 32 minutes. Its upbeat but Old "Country n Western" isn't my jam...
Is this where Wham Bam thank you mam came from?? Very Old School Country
Decent country, would listen again if I was in the mood. 2.5/5
NOOOOOOOOOOOO it feels that a tiger kept biting my imaginary tail from the first note to the end. 2/5
Kort, enfoldigt country
Certainly not a sound that speaks to me, but I appreciate the simple sounds and lyrics and why he spoke to so many.
Fun, old school country. There's nothing special about this record but it has a certain charm to it. 5/10
