Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Pretty much everything that’s great on this record is recycled from one of the other of the hits, especially the masterpiece. Who can blame them? Three stars because Pretty in Pink.

Pretty in Pink is still a favorite and the album is okay but a bit monotonous overall.

Probably not their best album, but really not bad for London in 1981

***An ok album

Sounds very 80’s rock

This album is just generic new wave. There is absolutely nothing notable here, except for the singer sounding like John Lydon on a couple tracks. He then proceeds to sound like generic new wave singer #653 on the rest of the album.

This was all just Talk Talk Talk.

I dig the Furs, but this album is just okay. Pretty In Pink is %100 the best track.

I like Pretty in Pink, but there wasn't much else on the album to make me want to listen to this again.

Pretty in pink is an incredible song, but im struggling through a whole album of this guy’s voice.

5/10 - it was alright. Sounded like the 80s

8/15/25. Fun album. This could be my ignorance speaking but it's almost a blend of 80s post punk with The Cure's sound. Not my absolute favorite but a distinct sound.

This was good! I could definitely see it growing on me, it want exactly what I expected but a good listen!

Very cool sounds on a lot of this. Especially liked the first song.

hey not bad at all

Not the best of the explosion of post punk / new wave bands in the early 80s UK, but they merge a lot of the elements of that scene (especially bands like Echo & the Bunnymen, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Siouxsie & the Banshees) plus a bit more Bowie/Mott the Hoople glam influence, into a sound that's swirling and atmospheric, darkly moody, dissonant and textural guitarsm, reverby drums, bouncey driving bass, and snarling hoarse vocals, all with a thick murky layer muffling it somewhat. But they also leans into a cleaner jangle style for some at times surprisingly poppy bright and melodic stuff - especially on the brilliant stand out Pretty in Pink - or, even more strangely, into louche loungey sax rock like No Tears. Favorites: Pretty in Pink, All of This and Nothing, She is Mine

Didn't quite live up to my (perhaps unrealistic) expectations from Forever Now, but still had some fun parts.

Good album.

I wonder if this album were released without the title track for a John Hughes movie it would be on this list? My bet is no. The Psychedelic Furs are a good hybrid band that was creating a new sound during the period, however must listen? I'm not convinced. 3/5

Not bad for 80’s British rock, but not my jam personally.

Honestly, The Psychedelic Firs have never been a band I've really could sink my teeth into. Something about Richard Butler's delivery I've always found kind of droney and boring. Something that struck me while I was listening to this album is tHat a lot of their verses to me kind of sounded the same. I don't know if it's just is cadence or that it really is kind of just lack of variety in the verses but half the songs I could tell they were different only by the chorus. This may be heresy, but I do prefer the '86 we recorded version of "Pretty in Pink" used in the movie, sounds fuller to me. But to me the best song on the album was "It Goes On" which didn't suffer from sounding the same. I actually quite enjoyed that one. There's nothing I inherently hate about this album, and it's in a general genre and sound that I do appreciate. I just don't find it all that gripping for whatever reason. (7.2) ★★★½

Enjoyed this quite a bit, even though new wave is not my favourite sound. 3.5 dtars

This band is kind of a blind spot for me -- I knew "Pretty in Pink" and "Love My Way", but never heard anything else. Think album was pretty sold, though probably a bit front loaded. "Pretty in Pink" and "Mr. Jones" were the highlights. 3.5 stars.

It was okay. Didn’t give this one a deep listen. Love pretty in pink. I love his voice as well.

Was unfamiliar with this. Can see a direct line from this to a lot of "alternative" music (whatever that means) that came later. It's actually 3.5 stars for me but decided to round down.

I know I listened years ago, and it bounced off me. This time around, I'm digging it.

Not bad.

Interesting album. Sounded a lot like Jeremy from Peep Show trying to do early Brit-pop.

I like Talk, Talk, Talk and I like this album. Some frequent fliers from 6Music if you are a music loving Brit.

Nice album for grown ups

This was a pretty good album, I knew of the Psychedelic Furs but I don't think I've ever really listened to them, they are pretty good right up my alley!

I enjoyed this album, but I can see why the Psychedelic Furs never broke through and became a major success. When they're on, they sound great and hit all the right marks, but it just isn't often enough. As a result, this feels more like an enjoyable nostalgia than a nod to timeless music.

I have a big bias to them............ uhoh I have this album on cd! very fun. I have to admit that it does sound very samey and isn't my favorite album despite having one of my all time favorite songs on it. Good! I have a soft spot for Butler's voice. all time favorite: imitation of Christ

3.5. nice but not outstanding. Forever Now is better

UK post-punk flirting with new wave. Pulsing, driving rhythm section with more atmospheric but melodic guitars and a few random other sounds (weird synths, flute sounds, saxophone, vocoder). Songs range from noisier ramblings to somewhat poppy. The first 2 songs show this clearly - kicking off almost intentionally offputting followed by a pretty clean and catchy tune. The tone has a wide range of dark and light too. A few songs stand out, a handful of them barely memorable.

Pretty decent, not sure I'd heard it before. Cracking track two.

Listened in the truck via YouTube music. I’d only really listened to the one album with Love My Way before. This was awesome too. Guess I’m going to have to dig into more of their catalog.

Sounded like argentinian rock at the beggining. It's okay

3 - decent new wave

Började bra. Bra första låt. Gick smärtfritt att lyssna igenom hela albumet. Punkigt och lite trist men helt OK.

Cool punk album but wore on me after a while because all the songs sound the same.

It's okay. Maybe I'm not in a mood for this rn, but other than that it's nice.

The 1st song got me excited for what turned out to be a pretty hit or miss album. Somewhere between Sex Pistols and Depeche Mode, but sadly not as good as that sounds. Generally liked it but not huge on the vocalist, too Londoner for me.

I was 12 when this album came out and somehow managed to miss it. Listening to it now takes me back to the early 80's and evokes some of the sound of that time. It’s an enjoyable album, a nice early 80s snapshot with one classic on it - Pretty in Pink. For me the album is a "oncer" - I'm glad that I heard it but I don't think that I'll be back

I’ve always liked this band’s sound, so I was surprised to not like this as much as I thought I would.

I think this is too 80s. There's a lot of new wave that still sounds good today, but this isn't it. I'm sure I would have loved it if I heard it in the 80s. Dumb Waiters caught my interest, but the rest is average.

Rather good, not amazing, though ahead of its time IMHO. 3.3

Risky way to start off my listening journey! I'm uniquely put off by punk/alternative rock music mostly by my misunderstanding of the musical rhythms and often grating vocals. It was a good practice to give music like this a chance! I enjoy the mixture of instruments and turns out I found several of their melodies catchy! Also their lyrics are sometimes very funny. Weird, good start to the journey!

5/10 - “mum can we have Duran Duran” “No we have Duran Duran at home” Duran Duran at home:

Didn’t hate it. But came up well short of liking it.

Fine, but nothing remarkable. A tendency to flatness on some songs was a strange choice.

Liked it more than expected, but a bit too long. Singer gets annoying after a fashion.

This had some good guitar moments but otherwise it's the vocals that sucked for me.

This had multiple songs about being horny? Like I feel as though there was bawdy stuff here. Not blown away, of course. And maybe they aren't blown. :o

Not terrible. Kind of dated, but not bad.

Good, fun 80s alternative rock. I haven't actually ever taken the time to listen to the Psychedelic Furs beyond "Love My Way," so it's neat to hear. Not a bad album.

Overall I liked the sound of the album, the '80s new wave vibes. But there wasn't enough to hook me as a new listener. Though I could imagine putting this LP on in 1981 and hearing the future.

Loud band with semi-singing frontman. Pretty is Pink was a great single, but his voice palls over the length of an album, and it all starts to sound pretty much the same. 2.5⭐️

Was just ok. All kind of sounded the same and after a while that saxophone in the background was getting quite annoying. 5/10

Fine but not my favorite

Pretty in Pink - ok I wanna sleep with you - Lekker direct nummer. Toon zetten en gaan. Die schelle sax past goed. No Tears - Hier is de sax minder welkom. Niet voor mij dit nummer. Mr. Jones - best prima Into you like a train - misschien iets aan de brave kant, maar wel muzikaal. It goes on - man, iets aan drums hebben na dat war on drugs album is erg welkom. Goed nummer. So Run Down - dit album heeft me intussen best wel te pakken. Misschien mijn favo nummer tot nu toe. All of This and Nothing - 'you didnt leave me anything that I can understand' is passend.

Pretty in pink is fantastisch.

Definitely an album of its time. Really enjoyed the last track, but overall, it just kind of molded together.

Pretty mid

not a style i have/will listen to often but i liked this one. pretty approachable

Not my top catalog choice but a good record with a couple of the "hits". Listened to them a ton in college and have always been a fan

It's fine? Reminiscent of others in the genre, didn't particularly stand out to me.

Pretty decent post-punk/alt-rock but it feels like the musical ideas here are explored in more interesting ways elsewhere. The lyricism isn't very interesting, and the vocals are tough to get used to. It’s a fun album though, the saxophone is a welcome addition.

What ppl does are casting bias on British music. I mean there are 20+ country music album on the list and every of them sounds the same and you guys still give them 4s and 5s like that’s the best thing since loafed bread 3.5/5

The chokehold new wave has on this list…

There were a few nice songs, but overall it wasn't really my thing.

While I typically like British post-punk and new wave thanks to this list, I didn't really care for this. It lacked the charm of other NW/PP bands.

6.5/10

Pretty in Pink’s a banger. The rest is dated

En stabil trea.

i love the talking heads downnnnn but this was just okay

Fav: Pretty In Pink Least Fav: I Wanna Sleep With You Don’t know to how feel, vocals were kinda mid and the weird saxophone was a bit hit-or-miss, but some of the songs have started to grow on me. I guess it’s a 3/5

1981. The Furs have held a fond place in my heart but never really crossed into my favorite lineups. I think this was a great album for alt rock and post punk which gave it weight.

Richard Butler has a fantastic voice- he could sing the back of a cereal box & sound sexy & all Velvet Underground cool. The music works well with Richard Butler's hella sexy voice it's crushing at times bleak dark pop/rock music that you can dance to, meditate to, drive to, whatever really - it would also make fantastic background music while having a cocktail or a cuppa coffee or tea as you talk, talk, talk, LOL (sorry)

generic but not bad

Not bad but sounds like everything else from 1981

Unoriginal, but still pretty solid. No complaints, but also wont listen to again

Yup this is 80s

01) Dumb Waiters - 8,0 02) Pretty in Pink - 7,5 03) I Wanna Sleep with You - 6,5 04) No Tears - 6,5 05) Mr. Jones - 6,5 06) Into You Like a Train - 7,0 07) It Goes On - 6,5 08) So Run Down - 6,5 09) All of This and Nothing - 6,5 10) She Is Mine - 6,5 TOTAL: 6,80 (68/100) Current ranking: 362/541

I love Pretty in Pink - but am not that familiar with the rest of their other output. Enjoyed the album but PIP is the clear standout and got a bit samey towards the end. Found the vocals slightly sneary and a bit too much sax.

I like to listen to The Psychedelic Furs but, with only a few exceptions, there is a sameness to their songs that makes me not really care which song is which or remember them once I am done. This album is a good album by The Psychedelic Furs but other than "Pretty in Pink" which I heard a good deal of on the radio, I couldn't identify any of the other songs as ones on this album or one of their other albums.

I was more familiar than I thought going into it. Leans more pop with punk undertones.

It was good but it would have been great if his voice was more bearable to listen to. good new wave / sort of early alt-rock/pop though.

this was a fun one.

It’s getting harder for me to rate things on this list. Like this wasn’t awful but I wasn’t wowed by it either. It was totally fine. And I’ve generally liked songs from this band that I’ve heard in the past. Sometimes an album is just too much of the same thing. 3/5

Even as (generally) a fan of the genre, I found this to be boring and a bit of a slog. No real standouts here.

Decent

Probably the most average new wave band of the 80s. Favorite track: Pretty In Pink 2.5/5

A high 3, and maybe a 4 if I spent more time with it.

I like the Furs but never felt like this one held up as well as the records before it or after it. Also, am I the only one who felt like John Hughes should have listened to the lyrics closer before making a movie around Pretty In Pink?

Even though I know they're very different bands, and different eras, I nearly always conflate Velvet Underground, Psychedelic Furs, and Depeche Mode into some sort of Frankenstein-like mashup of totally incompatible styles. And as I listened to this album, I realized that I've probably never actually heard much of anything by the Psychedelic Furs except the radio hits like "Pretty in pink". I was a bit surprised that some of the non-singles tracks on this album don't really sound like their more popular hits (the opening song "Dumb waiters" is a good example, although apparently this *was* a single), but in general they're not really a band that I enjoy listening to their songs, either for the first time or the umpteenth millionth time; that said, I thought "Mr Jones" and "It goes on" were stronger than most of the rest. Regardless, I give them credit for having nothing to do with the likes of Lou Reed or "Personal Jesus" (although there's a certain similarity to The Smiths, sadly).

I do like Pretty in Pink but mostly because it steals from Sweet Jane which is always a good thing. The rest didn't interest me too much but wasn't awful.

It's nice to listen to but it isn't the most interesting.

Like the poppier bounce with the attitude, but a little samey until it went full pop at the last 2 tracks. Not bad but think belongs in just OK. 3 Star

I'm sorry but the singer sounds like it's 2 in the morning and he's trying not to wake up his parents

“Dumb Waiters” gave me a surprising Mark E. Smith vibe, which isn’t a connection I’d ever made between The Psychedelic Furs and The Fall before. But Talk Talk Talk will always live in the shadow of its second track, “Pretty in Pink.” As a new wave goth kid, I should’ve been more into this, but the release date lands a little too early for my age. The music on this record is almost too mainstream — brightly polished and radio ready with no dark weirdness left in the corners to keep things interesting. Still, Pretty in Pink pierced through all of culture when it was used in the 1986 movie of the same name. Without that filmic boost the album might have faded further into the past.

They remind me a lot of Public Image Ltd. (and their eponymous song), but more polished. It's that same sort of screechy post-punk sound but thankfully they avoid going over the edge of abrasiveness. This is a very good example of post punk and its fit between 70's punk and 80's new alternative rock. Big Star/Alex Chilton, Television, PIL, The Psychedelic Furs, The Replacements, REM. It all makes sense. And if you don't think these guys influenced 90's alternative too, re-listen to Liz Phair's F@ck and Run - borrows the beat from No Tears. Side one is great except for the too sarcastic (or not clearly sarcastic enough) I Wanna Sleep With You. Dumb Waiters, Pretty in Pink (their deserving signature piece), No Tears, and Mr. Jones are all solid and have that crunchy, new at the time post punk sound. They almost should've stopped there because side two is a bit pedestrian. I still enjoyed Into You Like a Train and She is Mine. An easy 3 but a weaker side two keeps this album from being a 4.

Nice, but nothing remarkable or anything that slaps particularly

Extremely subpar vocals and all songs that feel ordinary, I really don't understand the hook here.

I was never a big Psychedelic Furs fan, but I liked this album. Richard Butler's voice is very distinctive and almost instantly recognizable. I can see how it might sound grating at times, but for me, today, it was not. The songs are good, but none really stood out except for Pretty in Pink, which is just a great song. I prefer the version recorded for the film though. There's some very good new wave/alternative music here, definitely worth a listen.

1981's perfect run comes to an end. I should like this more but it never quite grabs me, almost annoying at times.

I have to admit on some levels this is a fun, poppy, new wave album with catchy melodies and danceable beats, but also feels a bit samey after a while. I do like, "Pretty In Pink" and I recognize a few other songs, so this didn't sound too foreign or unfamiliar for me. This isn't something I would listen to often or buy, but you can do a whole lot worse in this genre and is a level higher than a lot of faceless, soul-less generic albums in the early 80's.

Enjoyable

That’s a lot of lyrics on wearing ladies clothes.

in a parallel universe the Eighties were ruled by John Hughes' classic coming-of-age flick "Into You Like A Train"

3.1 2x very 80s

i only knew pretty in pink going into this, and it's definitely the standout. the rest is just 40 minutes of the most generic 80s british new wave you've ever heard with a vocalist who's both incredibly excited at the prospect of getting laid but too bored to deliver a vocal performance above what we in the biz call "flaccid" favorites: pretty in pink, i wanna sleep with you, she is mine

Didn’t love, didn’t hate

Still sounds good, but not as good as I remember when I first heard it.

I spaced and forgot what I was listening to and thought it was David Bowie for a sec.

Suuuuuper light 3, more like 2.75 but I enjoyed myself more as it went along.

this was NOT the psychedelic album i was hoping for. had some good moments though

I didn't mind this, but it was kind of generic sounding. I love post punk and (some) new wave but this still didn't do much for me.

This is likeable enough, surpassing the quality of its punk contemporaries in terms of instrument playing. The guitar playing is strong without being too harsh or obtrusive, and the drums are played in a skilful, driving manner. Of course, as per punk standard, the singing is bad. A good measure of whether somebody is putting effort into their vocal is if their accent and "talking timbre" are mostly absent when singing. The singer in The Psychedelic Furs, unfortunately, sounds like a mere Brit talking rather drunkenly and expressively. Even in the lead single and (probably) the best track here, Pretty In Pink, this problem makes itself apparent. There isn't enough variety between tracks to justify giving this album higher than a 3, but I respect that it tries to sound different from its contemporaries (even if it mostly fails at this). Calling yourself "psychedelic" is an interesting approach to turn away punk fans that were disenfranchised a decade ago by the overwhelming presence of psychedelia in popular music. And boomer fans of psychedelia are in for a rude awakening when they put Talk Talk Talk on for a spin. I will say, though, that I really like this album art. It's a style that would be imitated by the Police a couple of years later with Synchronicity – another great album cover art. 3/5 Key tracks: Pretty in Pink, All of This and Nothing

This album felt like 9 versions of "Pretty in Pink." I didn't hate it, but I was mostly indifferent to their sound.

Fun psych rock, nothing too crazy or anything I haven’t heard before. 2.7

Nice enough

It's not bad, I guess. Very new wave, I guess. I don't know, I don't have much to say about it, to be honest. It wasn't great, it wasn't terrible. I've ranked MUCH better albums three stars, so that feels unfair, but it's nowhere near as bad as a 2 star review. I suppose if you were around at this time and liked this band and/or album you're going to like it, but I doubt that this is going to produce many new fans.

Much more post-punk sounding then I was expecting, not that it’s in the same vein (or quality) as Joy Division or PIL, as the very 80’s mainstream aesthetic is on full display that could be no more evident then the peppered in saxophones. This was further showcased through lead singer Richard butler's drawling British accented vocals. Pretty in Pink is the obvious big hit here, however there are some other good songs to be discovered across the ten tracks making up the album. Having said that, it also contains definite filler. 🎧 Classic Track- Pretty in Pink 🎧 Hidden Gem- Mr. Jones 🎧 Personal Favorite- Dumb Waiters 🚫 Skipped Track- She is Mine This one interested me to garner repeated listens, however not memorable enough to move the needle from good to great. 🖼️ Album Artwork: Uninspiring Click the thumbs up icon below if you enjoyed my take on the album :)

Post-punk with a healthy dose of horns. Does it stand out in any other ways? Not to me, but maybe others will find more value in another '80s UK post-punk album.

Pretty in Pink was great, and the next couple of tracks made me think this was going to be a 4 or 5 star album, but then it immediately tailed off into mediocrity.

Solid album, might need to revist to see if I like it more after some more listens.

it had it's moments but i think i like their later works better. 3.5/5

I was disappointed: I had memories of "Into Like A Train" being quite good, so I guess that was a later version. Oh well

A bit disappointing...was expecting more than just one really good song.

Good not great

I'm glad I heard this. Did it change my life? Nope Not that it's bad it's just not good. A bad Only Ones?

Great band but they have better albums under their belt.

Not too bad, the album had an okay background vibe, it wasn't very invasive. I thought it would be more psychedelic, given the name of the band, but I am happy that it was not a crazy album like some of the ones we've gotten in the past.

drei bis vier

Absolutely a sound of their time in the early 1980s, but still upbeat and fun to listen to more than four decades later!

Need to be in the right mood for this, butbwow Dumb Waiters is absolutely sick

The sax was grooving. I liked the song She is Mine

Solid album. Like that New Wave sound

Album - Talk Talk Talk Artist - The Psychedelic Furs Release - 1981 Heard it before? - Y Heard OF it before? - Y I say “heard before” but it has been a solid year since I first listened to this album and forgotten it completely, except “Pretty In Pink.” Sadly, I think it’s a weak follow up to their debut, that defines the term “Sophomore Slump.” Whereas the debut was bouncing off the walls with saxophones and flanger pedals, this one wants to be both poppier and artier at the same time. It doesn’t really work out, and things start to get unbearable by the 2nd side mark. Sadly, I have to side with the “generic” crowd on this one.

Way too yelling.

Up and down, but overall it was solid.

Yep it's new wave alright. the sonic landscape is really dense and layered, with lots of cross cutting textures. I Wanna Sleep With You is a good example. Mr. Jones is a little less dense and more my speed. Just fine I suppose.

80s psych-synth-rock? Not bad

how come some british people sound really british when they sing and other british people don’t retain the accent at all? this was pretty fun and i found myself enjoying it more as the album went on, especially “all of this and nothing.” a lot of this style of british rock sounds really dated in a way that i just can’t get past so that’s unfortunate but overall i think it’s fine.

This isn't awful and I enjoy the horns showing up but I'm not sure why this is critical listening. It Goes On had some interesting instrumental stuff going on. Could've been the day for me.

2-3 Banger aber ich habs nicht sooo gefühlt.

Talk talk talk and joy joy joy.

We especially liked Pretty in Pink.

#474. This band doesn't seem to know whether it wants to be a punk band or a new wave band. While they're trying to figure that out, I'm just going to leave these stars over here. 3/5: decent.

Really enjoyed the general sound of this album. Felt new-wavy, a bit like "The Cure". With that being said I didn't find any particular hook of this album. It just seemed to noodle a long with a mixing that wasn't too favorable. Favourite track was "Into You Like A Train" but it still sounds like something I've heard before. Weak 3.

It's all a bit samey. And I find his voice a bit grating. Pretty in Pink is a tune though.

Oh wow, another British new wave/post-punk album. I'm really starting to feel the over-abundance of these things. This album's fine. It's whatever. The guy's voice kind of pisses me off sometimes but the instrumentation is pretty solid. The songs feel a bit samey but it could be worse. This album could be a lot worse, but it also just doesn't impress me much at all. The writing is okay. Some songs do it better than others, with "Pretty In Pink" probably being the highlight just for being an interesting song. I don't have much to say. Talk Talk Talk is fine. Low 3/5. 5/10 if it was in that system.

Pretty in Pink and Dumb Waiters are the stand out tracks.

Not great, but it was a punkish album that didn’t make me want to throw my phone against a wall in disgust, so I’ll give it a most generous review for this kind of garbage music.

I like it

Vocal style grated a bit after a while, then after a while longer it faded from consciousness and it all started to work again. Overall, pretty good album, one of the rare ones where I found the Spotify version's additional tracks to add to rather than detract from the whole album experience.

Something dilapidated about this, but it's got heart. It's probably a four star masterpiece, but I'm not enjoying it as much as I want to.

Feels a bit dated, but still enjoyed it!

decent as far as new waves goes

Another blast from the past! Wore this cassette out fast forwarding and rewinding to get to the hits. Now I see why. It's fun and passably enjoyable. Not great.

I am a huge 80s alternative music fan. I also love Butler's voice - so distinctive. Being so early in their career, this album had very similar sounding songs. Despite that, I really enjoyed it. Who doesn’t love Pretty In Pink?

I'm sure the Bowie comparison is exhausted at this point, but it really just feels like Scary Monsters if he stuck more to a rock sound. Not bad, but nothing I'm itching to run back again and again.

solid 80s new wave

not bad, nice sound, really enjoyed certain songs

All the songs sound super similar. I happen to like the sound so it's okay, but gets pretty repetitive. Really like the horn sections in a few of the songs. Sounds like early kings of Leon were influenced by this stuff

I enjoyed this.

Enjoyed this a bit less than I expected to, but I did expect to like it a lot. Clearly a good album, with potential for me to like it more. Perhaps just not in the right mood for this one today.

Sure, ok

Interesting bit of post-punk and new wave. Feels a bit raw.

David Bowie aping new wave act that isn't just coasting on their big hit; there are some solid tracks here .Best Tracks: Pretty In Pink; I Want To Sleep With You; Into You Like a Train

(Having been more familiar with the Psychedelic Furs’ name than their actual music, I approached Talk Talk Talk with curiosity. Reading up on the album, I thought it might be a gem that would slot right into my tastes. The truth, however, is somewhere in between. While the album has its highlights, it ultimately falls short of being truly exceptional, though it does deserve recognition for its place in post-punk history. The music leans heavily into the jagged, angular guitars and restless rhythms of early post-punk. Tracks like "Pretty in Pink" stand out as a high point, where the band’s blend of sharp riffs, melodic hooks, and Richard Butler’s distinct tone come together beautifully. The album opener "Dumb Waiters" also deserves praise for its infectious energy and smart use of saxophone, which adds an unpredictability that works well in this context. These moments showcase the Furs at their best, combining abrasive post-punk energy with just the right amount of polish. However, not every track reaches those heights. Songs like "I Wanna Sleep with You" and "She Is Mine" feel more like filler, and Butler’s vocal delivery—a sardonic, aloof style—doesn’t always land. That said, there’s something intriguing about his phrasing and attitude. While it’s not entirely my bag, there’s an undeniable charisma to his approach that shines through on the stronger tracks. The issue lies more with the production than with Butler himself; Steve Lillywhite’s reverb-heavy, layered sound, while possibly groundbreaking at the time, simply feels dated today. This production style doesn't always benefit the arrangements, making the vocals feel disconnected from the music. Despite its flaws, Talk Talk Talk remains enjoyable overall. It’s easy to see why the album holds a special place for fans of the era. My average track rating for the album landed at a respectable 7.2/10—decent, but far from the heights of the top albums on my list. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? From a musical perspective, I question its inclusion in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, but its historical significance as a bridge between punk’s raw energy and new wave’s melodic ambitions is undeniable. Would this release make my personal list? No Will I be listening to it again? Probably not as a whole, but I’ll revisit the highlights like "Pretty in Pink" and "Dumb Waiters."

I like this a lot more in theory than in practice.

Quite consistent and good, precise sounding post-punk, new wave album from the early 1980s - I was expecting a more synth-oriented 1980s sound but I was surprised that it had a more pleasant sound overall. I enjoyed it though it was a tad too samey throughout the whole album. I was considering it a 4 but I will rather round it down to a strong 3.

A few really good tracks but the rest was very middle of the road

Following the initial heavy start in Dumb Waiters, this excessive 80s-fest plunges into the unrecoverable depths of the sort of music that’d be played on a cheap BBC coming-of-age period drama set in the aforementioned decade. At least there’s some solace in longer tracks such as All of This & Nothing, showcasing that the Psychedelic Furs have artistic credibility past that of the woeful punch-punch-punch of the 80s charting drummer. I’ve spent two paragraphs somewhat berating this, but it’s not all that bad. All songs are bearable and fit for background listening just fine, and those that are relisten-worthy are excellently arranged.

I liked Talk Talk Talk more than I expected going into it; it's not really really good or anything, and it's not worth a place on the list, but it's got enough about it to keep me interested, mostly in the lead singer's vocals, which despite being new wave-adjacent in style, work for me because there's an urgency to it that works with the music. The one-two punch of Into You like A Train and It Goes On are great, they remind me a little bit of Faith No More during that little run, which is good. I dunno, probably wouldn't listen again but found it good enough for a solid 3.

He's got quite a distinctive voice which I like, but the music is much of a muchness really, ends up sounding pretty samey throughout but there's a couple of decent tracks - All Of This & Nothing is probably my favourite despite it going on too long. 3/5, but a relatively low one.

One of those bands where I knew a few songs but never took the time to listen to. Great and distinctive voice and some good early synth work. Probably better as a 'best of' rather than an album band.

Some good songs ("Pretty in Pink"!); some noisier ones.

Okay. 5/10

Never a massive fan of this type of music. That said. Didn't mind this

Solid example of that year's music. Good beats

It was OK and I do like a lot of post punk, but it didn't really grab me.

The were more rock than punk - and polished. Who knew. Dug it way more than I thought I would.

Pretty good and even-flowing piece of post punk, good album.

This is another one filed under "I know the name, never heard, had nothing against." Putting it on the first time was too stop-and-go, so I waited until my morning rush of meetings was done and started again. I'm digging. Reminds me of Dramarama.

Who knew melody could be find amidst such cacophonous energy?

Pretty in Pink is a classic but in my opinion many of their better songs are on some of the other albums.

One of those instances where I'm not quite sure why we get an album from a band that doesn't include the big hit(s). Granted, I'll always give them a chance, but there's nothing on here that comes close to "Love My Way" or "The Ghost in You." Not a bad album by any means, just a little puzzling. Favorite tracks: Dumb Waiters, She Is Mine. Album art: Really like this cover a lot, some scattered colors over an otherwise desaturated shot of the guys. Love seeing the "compact disc" logo on the image too. 3/5

Kind of pleasingly ramshackle, but too much of it is pretty forgettable. Thought it might stand up a bit better.

It's perfectly fine music but eh... nothing special.

His voice and the Samey sound of some tracks prevents a higher rating. That said a few tracks have made it to my Spotify likes

Idk, didn't do it for me

Not too bad, still not for me

This one is hard to judge because it sounds good with certain moods and at certain times of your life. If you're not a melancholy teenager, then this probably isn't good.

3/5. The riffs and rhythms carry this album. It sounds like they are trying for a Talking Heads and Stooges vibe. They have their own sound for sure but I don't think it's as exciting as it could be. It's loud and upbeat for sure but it feels like it is missing that soul. It's not a bad album I think but it definitely feels more like a fun listen than anything more. Thankfully this was actually listenable post punk, but does sound more like New Wave than punk. Best Song: Dumb Waiters, Into You Like A Train, Pretty In Pink

Pretty in Pink 3.2 Mr. Jones 3 No Tears 3 Dumb Waiters 3.4 She Is Mine 3.2 Into You Like a Train 3 It Goes On 3 So Run Down 3.2 I Wanna Sleep With You 3.1 All of This and Nothing 3.3 Score: 3.14

Pretty good late punk/new wave sound. Less synthesizer driven than later albums.

Fine. Not unhappy I heard it, but will likely never listen again. Too much like 100 other things on this list.

First song is a banger. Rest of the album was good overall.

Decent but not memorable 2.5

A solid 80s album. Pretty In Pink will always slap.

Want to listen again but the first song rules

Pretty good post-punk. Only heard the debut by these dudes and this album was better. Not as goth-y as I expected, which is a shame.

This album fits firmly in to the overrepresented category on this list of UK music from the early 1980s that all sounds the same. It was fine for sure, but man this list is problematically homogenous.

I saw some other reviews that really talk about how this album runs all together. I do not disagree with that statement one bit. That said, I did find myself generally enjoying the music on this album quite a bit more than I thought I would. "Pretty in Pink", is definitely the highlight of the album, but other songs on the album definitely stand on their own, even if they do all more or less sound like "Pretty in Pink". I definitely hear the post-punk entering new-wave era at play here. There's also a bit of gritty glam to this, as well. Overall, not an amazing album, but one that I enjoyed well enough.

Good transition album between punk and what would become the new wave scene in the UK. The vocal angst is still there, but the melodies mellower. Not amazing, not terrible.

I've listened to the radio hits before, but never this full album. The guy's voice was a little off for me, but I didn't hate this.

Unremarkable.

More rackety and rock-oriented than I had imagined. After a while the singing (which, in its delivery, held the odd Mark E Smith affectation) wore on me. Nonetheless, the sound was dense, I liked the slightly dissonant horns, and proceedings marched to a satisfactory conclusion. Alright!

Fairly enjoyable but not memorable

This album has some very good songs, however I feel that some of them were wasted thanks to the bad guitar work on some of them. The singer's voice is very similar to Iggy Pop's (it's probably him, right? I haven't looked at the wiki) and the lyrics are good. Although it is overall a good album, it didn't impress me much. I'll leave 3 stars!

Nice vibe and some good tracks.

Eh I have mixed feelings about this. I couldn't really tell most of the songs apart but overall the album was okay. I think it was just kind of mediocre to be honest. Even trying to write this review is difficult because I forgot what the songs sounded like. If the plain white wall which I stare at from 9-5 in my corporate job was an album, I think it would be this one.

Vocals and lyrics are a bit Judgy Bowie.

Enjoyable, not memorable.

I like this. The melodies and moods are up my alley, although I don't have an urge to listen to it again. I wonder if it's an album that could have drawn me in more had I found it earlier in my musical socialisation.

I generally like this band's sound. I feel like the individual songs sort of blend together though.

Only knew the song Pretty in Pink before. I don't have any strong feelings about this either way. It's an interesting mix of post punk and jangle pop, and sounds slightly ahead of the curve in that aspect. I like the splashes of saxophone as well. Sounds more like a mid 80s record than an early 80s one. Like the first two songs, Mr. Jones and the last one more than the rest. The singer's voice is slightly annoying but the album isn't long enough for it to really grate.

One of those albums where it's all one song but I kinda like the song so 🤷 Pretty In Pink is just the much more highly produced version of the song that appears 8-10 other times on the album.

This guy's voice is not fun to listen to. The music sounds like it would be interesting, but none of the songs were anything special. They just sounded like generic 80s pop rock, but with boring vocals.

Delicious new wave, wonderful. A lot of people say British singers sound like they lose their accent when singing, which I see in some cases, but it makes me appreciate bands that continue to sound violently British when singing. New wave is great for this. Pretty in Pink is an obvious standout, the rest is just alright to vibe with.

David Bowie but good.

I was actually a little underwhelmed with this. It was fine, I like new wave, but some of the songs felt a little dull. Maybe a remaster would help? I'm not savvy enough to know.

Richard Butler's vocals are limited at best and become a factor on some songs (e.g. "I Wanna Sleep With You") but this is *mostly* an easy album to listen to - I haven't heard many of these songs, probably being more familiar with the Furs' mid 80s softer sounds. e.g. "Mr. Jones" is much more a driving post-punk rocker than I'd remembered this band could deliver. Some definite missteps here - i.e. I'm really not buying the sax in these songs (e.g. "No Tears") and after a while there is a same-ness to the sound. Doesn't quite reach the pantheon of 80s post-punk/mopey Brit bands and I think it's mostly due to the vocals which quickly grow tiring, but I'd dig listening to some of this again. 6/10 3 stars

I couldn't remember Pretty in Pink at all, although I also listened to Talk Talk Talk in the 80s. Overall, the album didn't particularly impress me, but it didn't bother me either. 3/5

3☆/5 08.20.2024

A solid post punk album with a great style and a lot of hooks as well as some more tender moments like She Is Mine, even if a bit samey in places

kind of just feels like the same song 10 times

Not really my style but it wasn’t bad to listen to.

Another boring and very avwrage album form 80s. This list just has to fill the spots, so probably the records are picked at random. Like in this case. Wasted 15 minutes.

Decent

Лучшая песня - All of This and Nothing.

Really like this. Between a 3 and a 4 for me. I had a whole long write up and the website yoinked my review. I'll just say I would have absolutely worn this out in my teen years, but hearing for the first time as a much older me, it hits different. On the weaker side between 3 and 4, so I'll give at a 3, but I'm likely to return to it at some point. Definitely wouldn't switch the station if it showed up.

This was fine. Pretty fuzzy, pretty pop. Had this on in the background, so maybe there was more to it, but it felt like generic British punkish album to me.

Some cool flowy songs that has a pretty unique sound. Singer is pretty typical 80s British sounding but it goes well with the songs. Was nothing crazy special but was a cool album to listen to. This is going to be one of those albums that I look back at in a year and have no recollection of it at all.

Dumb Waiters is weirdly great. Harmonica fucks on it (I think it's a harmonica?) Psychedelic Furs not pulling any punches saying they want to sleep with you. Some songs have some terrible 80s'ness to them (Pretty in Pink), but a lot have some fun bass parts to them and interesting instrumentation. Low 3.

Very mediocre, wouldn't seek out these songs to listen to again but they were fine I guess

Husky voiced, plenty of sax. Kind of reminds me of a proto-U2. Has that "cool" factor but nothing really sticks out aside from the vibes. Favorite track: "Dumb Waiters"

Pretty in pink is the big hit while the others kind of just become background noise. The lead singer has one tone/sound that is so consistent throughout that it makes the album sound repetitive. 5/10

Some good stuff here. Also seems like a bunch of filler. Interesting that this sounds like a link between early 80s postpunk and the Arctic Monkeys. Unfortunately that isn't a good kind of interesting.

Another day, another kinda sick new wave/post punk record on here. This one’s not all killer, but the good stuff is real good.

Just kinda washed over me. A bit samey, but enjoyable enough.

There's something about this album that just doesn't gel with me, but I can't figure out what it is. I left it and came back a couple of hours later and had the same feeling. I slept on it and listened the next day fresh, yet the feeling persists.

Some nice Bowie vibes from this one.

Listenable, 3*

Bit 80s but OK.

Unique sound, I do think Pretty in Pink carried this album though. All around solid project not too moving but didn’t suck.

It was ok

Favorite Track: Pretty in Pink

Very Bowie like.

An average album at best.

A bit generic from the era but not bad, really. Which is way better than being really bad.

Good rock music. Just too much going in the single direction. I find it a bit boring after a while.

I was initially turned off by this album. The production seemed really shoddy, and the entire sound felt very immature and under developed. But the end of the album really saves it from being totally bad in my opinion. The longer songs have a more refined quality that I wish extended to the rest of the album. Interesting use of saxophone throughout as well. Top tracks: No Tears, All of This and Nothing, She Is Mine

The album has a great sound but boy is it repetitive after a while. I mean, you can tell this is influential music but they have a sound and don’t deviate from it.

Great bright pop rock from Britain out of the early 80s

Sure it may "all sound the same" but this group did what they did well and consistently. Fun, offbeat.

I honestly got a little bored. Nothing here to make it stand out amongst the crowd. It shouldn’t be considered bad, but not without room for improvement. 3/5

It feels very British, so if I want to feel British I'll listen to this.

I expected something more significant given joe’s much I’ve heard this bands name, however, it seemed to have not quite tapped into anything special.

Annehmbar!

Post Punk. Loved the bare production, really adds to the urban vibes. There were a couple standout tracks for me and the rest was still good just not as memorable. Should revisit. Light 3.5/5

Honestly? This was fine. Some good peaks in the songwriting but the music wasn’t anything new and sounds pretty dated. If feels quintessential but not for my taste

Some exciting bits. If the rest of the record had gone on with riffs as strong as "Dumb Waiters," this might feel more like the overlooked classic it's being billed as, rather than just an era-noteworthy record.

HL: "Dumb Waiters", “It Goes On”, “Pretty in Pink”, "All of This and Nothing" Some decent new wave today; I'm not crazy about Richard Butler's vocal performance in this, however. He doesn't sound that different than in "Love My Way", the only PF song I was familiar with. Maybe it's the lusher production in the latter that distracts me. But his too-cool-for-school snarl in songs like "I Wanna Sleep With You" is just annoying. That song contains two of the things that redeem this album as a whole, funnily enough: the overdriven guitar and distorted saxophone parts (see also: "Dumb Waiters"). June 7, 2024

I like the music and songwriting but the vocals are a bit grating.

Never really heard it much--but I'm enjoying it. Anything attached to John Hughes had me running. Where did that sax on I Just Want To Sleep With You come from? They sound like they could have almost taken off (despite Hughes). I like the singer's quasi-louche affect. Pretty In Pink is their pop side leaking out. Probably made them a fortune but made them uncool despite their alternative strengths.

You really couldn't attend college in the 80s without hearing The Psychedelic Furs drifting from a window. But I never listened to a whole album. I like this. Dig that droning buzz and combination of punk/indie rock with a side of pop. The nostalgia is strong with Pretty in Pink. Not quite a 4 but more than a 3.

Still sounds great

3/5 - just meh

I can never figure out how I feel about music where the vocals are essentially spoken word with music in the background. I started off this album not liking the songs, but when we got to "Into You Like A Train" I changed my mind a little. I like the beat and I was bopping my head along to the music.

post-punk

I’m starting to like these 80s new wave, post-punk vibes. It’s very hard to divorce these sounds from the movies I saw as a kid. The unexpected sax is a good touch.

Blind album and artist. I feel like I've heard the band name though, just don't know where. Pretty middle ground album for me. Interesting and glad I tried it like a lot of other albums here, but did not click with it.

She is Mine is just awful. I didn't think I'd have that kid of reaction, but apparently it's that offputting. ugh. Pretty in Pink is a good tune, though.
