Reviews (page 7 of 8)

I truly do not know what mood I might be in that would make me think … PENTANGLE! GET ME SOME PENTANGLE! The musicianship is certainly excellent, they clearly understand what they’re doing, and even the production is good given the year and the genre (which can often sound a big rough). But .. I found myself skipping through tracks because it simply did not resonate with me in any way. It even bordered on annoying at times.

Not for me.

It's... not bad, but not good.

Fairport Convention without the heat.

What the world needs now is another folm singer like I need a hole in my head...

Never heard of. Woo-woo-hippie start. Up next, appropriate musical sounds from India.

Some talented stuff and nice voices. Churchy cult vibe was throwing me.

Renaissance Fair music. Was a bit much.

The acoustic instrumentation sounded good but the singing left something to be desired. Maybe folk is just not my jam.

Didn’t like.

Yep folk music.

I'm not on enough drugs for this

Taking most of the fun out of prog rock lol

I just can't vibe with the whole fol-de-lol type British folk. I love our folk history, but our music was terrible. No wonder so many people decided plague and famine were better options if this was the entertainment available. Anyway, that's what this is. Clearly made by talented people but just not for me

Not very into folksy stuff but her voice is lovely

Danny Thompson plays bass - got me through some of the overly precious moments. Kinda liked parts of it, and it is a little weird.

No, thank you.

Maybe no vocals would make it better for me. Its like unicorns and castles. Isk. Was hard to get through for me.

Not very good

I just can't get into folks at all whatsoever, and this album ain't gonna make me change my mind

Sally went around the roses one too many times.

Better than Amy Winehouse

More 60s folkish stuff. Getting a bit bored of it now.

They were different times

i feel like im at medieval times

Felt weirdly religious. Not a massive fan of the woman's vocals, the man's were more to my taste and I enjoyed his songs more. Springtime Promises was solid.

Maybe there is a time and a place for this medieval sounding folk but I just couldn't get into it at this time. Should revisit at some point.

Reasonably pleasant listen. Probably not gonna listen to it again.

A band you might enjoy seeing at Woodstock, but wouldn't care too much about missing next to the rest of the lineup. I'm pretty lukewarm on this one. On one hand, the almost fairytale-like orchestration of strings and airy vocals are pretty beautiful. But that gets quickly dropped for bluesy guitar melodies and uninteresting lead vocals. A more stripped down track list probably would've done this one more favors.

The last song saved this from being a 1*

It sounds like some good campfire songs. Not sire why it made the 1001 though.

Folk rock isn't my jam but I can see the appeal of this record by Pentangle that was led by the prolific Bert Jansch. Wiki informs that Pentangle is based on the device on Sir Gawain's shield from the Middle English poem... hence the almost medieval sound of this band. They also sound very similar to Renaissance, which was more prog than folk so I like the latter more. Nice writing, good music-manship and nice female vocals, so I give it a nod, but I wouldn't seek this out for repeated listenings to be honest.

It was fine. Not really what I'm into.

Decent for that style, not really my thing

Folk music is definitely not in my likes list and Basket of Light was no exception. This sounded like I was at Church, particularly on Lyke-Wake Dirge. The arrangements were mildly intriguing, but not enough to get me to enjoy it that much. Best: Light Flight Worst: Once I Had A Sweetheart

Interesting listen but definitely an acquired taste that I am not going to give further chances to grow.

I don't like how the harmonies mix. It seems like they are in the wrong keys at times. Its disjointed to me.

A magical, mystical little journey. This was not my cup of tea, but it wasn't completely terrible. Hunting Song was kinda fire.

Pleasantly forgettable

Interesting but not my cup of tea

crazy hippy shit, pretty listenable. I'd be going 2.9 here if I had more room

Basket of shit

I will never understand this list. In the artists page on apple music this one is under compilations and I'm not sure what that even means. The cover makes this look like a live album but it doesn't exactly sound like one? Who knows. But then you click on the wiki entry and the best single...BEST...reached 43 on the UK charts...not even the US charts. Not even top 20 or 30 or even 40!!!! While the album looks like it was number 5 that still doesn't tell me much. If only there was a 1001 albums list made by someone else...anyone else. I bet we would be getting much better classics than this.

Not a fan of 1960s folk music. This is better than some others though. 2.5

They're funky. And I can dig it. Got a little annoying at the end but oh well.

Gauw afgezet.

Beetje gedateerd en kon mij weinig bekoren

Oef dat was een lange zit. Zweverig hippie-gezever.

Na Korn was dit nogal een overgang.

Good start. Okay I did not know this band but by the cover I definitely did not expect that. Like it. Okay... nevermind... I'm in the 4th song y ya me siento como que evangelizada medieval....

Really old style folk music 2.5

Oh, no thank you.

Fairly static folk music with gospel undertones. A lack in lyrical content made for a majority of the song writing content just being "la la la ooh ooh ooh la la la"

BL: never heard of Pentangle before, I like the RAH feature in the album cover. AL: it wasn’t my thing massively. I enjoyed many aspects and I can objectively say this is a “good” album. However it doesn’t align with my tastes, folk-rock has never massively been my thing. There were some tracks I could find myself getting into, but generally speaking I didn’t think this was to my tastes, despite being a very clearly well crafted album full of love. FT: “Springtime Promises”, “Cold Mountain”, “I Saw an Angel” 2/5

Not really much to make of this. Was rather boring. Might revisit.

Every song sounded the same

Sättet hon sjöng på påminde om cranberries.

Dnl yet

Folky. 2.5 maybe. Not my sound

Wikipedia labels this as “folk jazz”? Finally found a genre that doesn’t rly go with jazz

I mean you can hear the influence, but it's really tough.

It has a very church/cult kind of sound to it. Would probably go well in a soundtrack dealing with those topics...

Not really my thing

What a weird album. These songs sound like they would be used for a 1971 B-movie about a murderous band of hippies, especially during a scene where they are dancing around chanting. All filmed with a dreamy, grease lens of course.

Everything sounds pretty much the same

Church songs... And why the hell do they make a extended version with 3 versions of the same boring song?

House Carpenter is excellent, but ultimately, my wife came into the kitchen whilst I was working and listening to this album through the Bluetooth speaker and said “What the fuck are you listening to?”

Felt like I had just cut off the head of a Necker on my way to Velen but occasionally stopped off to suck on a Succubus’ tit. It produced some imagery of Witcher 3 and also What We Do in the Shadows. 1 star for each

I have no idea what I'm listening to, I'm gonna be honest. Usually I can find something in it that's familiar but I have no idea this time. It's good, I'm not gonna lie but it's odd. It got very religious out of nowhere too. Some of this kinda reminds me of Kate Bush in a weird way.

This was weird. Part of it sounded like the Medieval Times soundtrack and part had a culty vibe. Not for me.

I didn’t pay much attention to this. I didn’t really understand why people like it.

I thought this was going to be some subversive satanic rock or some bible-thumping chamber music based on the cover. I'm glad it's just some harmless 60s folk music. The name of the band and the album cover evoke thoughts and judgements that do not align with the actual music at all, it had me worried for a moment there. It’s harmless but boring.

I start to feel bad about my predisposition against compilation-tier British output, then I realize I'm listening to compilation-tier British music. No real stinkers on this record except maybe the opener, but it totally failed to make an impression. The critical consensus suggests hidden depths, but for now it's a footnote to straight-folk albums from the same time and place which are actually good.

A weird crossover between Christian music and folk. Not the best album to listen to all the way through. Some of the folky songs weren’t too bad but overall it dragged and wasn’t that special. 3.7/10

Didn't really like this album that much at all.

Soft as hell. Mamas and papa's vibe

Quite weird, but quite chill, at times catchy

Voða mikið hippadót. Það mætti segja að dagsnúmerið eigi vel við. Ekkert rosalega markvert í gangi.

Sort of folk jazz with some English earnestness. Some really epic upright bass playing.

It’s the soundtrack to your Renaissance Faire weekend outing with that friend who scored some awfully-mediocre stank weed. Embarrassing to say you enjoyed some of it.

Skipped most of it.

It's Ren Fair-Rock with songs mixed in that have nothing to do with the medieval themes. It doesn't sound bad, but an odd album.

2/11, 18%

An unintentional cliche of 60’s English folk music. Mostly bad. A few pleasant moments (all without the cloying vocals) save this from the one star dumpster.

Honestly had forgotten I had listened to this.

2/5 Sally go round the roses top song

Definitely a bit of a change from the usual on this list. The range of instrumentation is enough to keep me just slightly interested, but beyond that I don’t think there’s much to come back for. 3/10

Enya fap.

Female singer. British folk jazz. Kinda weird, dancing forest fairy music

Not their best album. I prefer pentangle

Folk ain't for me

um... I can't... am I in church? am I a buddhist? possibly a muppet? or am I just a hippie having a low-key life crisis while things *ding* all around me???

Not my thing

What in the commune did I just listen to? First track was 4 stars because it wasn't CSNY/Rolling Stones. But it got old quick. I can't imagine a person/group of color putting out this album with this (lack of vocal) quality and getting on this list. White mediocrity. Backing music was really good!

The folky stuff is OK but there's only so much I can cope with in one sitting

Starts off strong but then falls into a slightly dull, overly wholesome monotony. Giving it a 2 because I've given out a lot of 3s lately..

At first I hated it for the voices. Then I quite liked it for some of the music. Eventually I became completely indifferent to it.

This went on for so long.

Stop singing! Stick to what you're good at - sick instrumentations!

Pretty good folk album

Not really sure of this one.

Alright, nothing special for me though. I kind of get a Beatles vibe at times.

I'm not enjoying these vocals. Train Song is very cool, though.

Was alright, not for me though I think

Cheap-mans version of Renaissance. But no where near as good. Just could not get in to this. D+

I don't like folk much.

I did not care for the album. I was not familiar with the band or any of the songs. The songs were uninspiring and I did not need to listen to this album. No need to listen to again.

swing your pants

This is the album that ended the hippy movement

I definitely preferred the more funky ones, have to say most of it was a bit aggravating... The woman's voice in particular, too high and airy. Give it some welly

Peruskakkosen arvoista rallattelua.

I guess it was nice for a time. But not for me

It's ok for an old style of music that just doesn't work anymore. 2/5.

Twee medieval weirdness. Might sound good round an open fire in the vale of Avalon in 1969.. less so on a monday morning in work in 2022 trying to decipher how to edit Microsoft spreadsheets.

couldn't get into it, they all remind me of Christmas songs

It was exactly what I’d expect from the band and it was listenable but not really my thing. 2*

That was weird. Didn't hate it though.

Technically accomplished folk music with high-art aspirations, but man oh man is it ever not my jam at all.

I had never heard of this before. It feels very, very much of its time. In that, it succeeds. As something I'd listen to on a regular basis, it doesn't hit a chord.

I'm sorry - I'm amazing! All these bands I've never listened to sound exactly like I thought they would! I don't understand the fascination with olde worlde folk music. Probably important though.

Wasn't what I was expecting. Thought.it was going to be Death Metal. As folksy stuff goes it was okay.

Musica de igreja?

Wtf är detta för konstigt? Nej men extremt underligt typ Ronja Rövardotter inte min grej riktigt 2/5

At first I hated it for the voices. Then I quite liked it for some of the music. Eventually I became completely indifferent to it.

weird and band name sounds like a squid orgy

hmm interesting, progressive folk I don't think is a sound for me, at lease in these more lofty kind of baroque feels. This just seemed largely snooty and disinterested to me. Didn't have the more warm personal comforts that come to define folk for me. Talented musicianship and well written stuff, just not super interesting

1.9 reicht

Not a fan

A couple good songs, but idc about the king's third son

Not a huge fan of this summer of love type of music.

that was alright, i'm not big on folk but it was ok as background noise

Not my style of music at all

Not for me.

I'm sure this was serious music at one point in time but currently hard to take it seriously. The folkiest folk band that every folked??

Female singer has a beautiful voice I’ll be fine if I don’t hear this again😬

i felt like ia accidently walked in into a cult meeting

This was really bad. Hated the sitar, the music, the singing. 1/5

springtime promises

What the hell was that? Music like this is exactly why I avoid medieval markets. After just two songs, I couldn't take it anymore and turned that crap off. 1/5

This is a project I knew nothing about going in other than that this has an absolutely stunning album cover, and after completing this project from front to back I am left a bit underwhelmed but also satisfied with its' quality. Don't get me wrong I enjoy Folk music, especially Folk Rock, but when it came to The Pentangle's Basket of Light it just felt like it ran out of ideas very early on and became very plain and dry by the end of the 40 minute runtime. Even with the nice harmonies, simple instrumentals, and slightly lengthy track times, this album still felt like it hit a brick wall after the first 2 tracks and never really recovered. I wish I was more into this but I left very empty-handed and slightly frustrated here. Don't know what else to say so I guess nuff said?...

Just when you think todays album can’t possibly be worse than yesterday’s!

Too folky for me but musicianship was interesting.

Liked parts of it but couldn’t get past the vocals. The singers sounded off-key and took me out of the music. I didn’t finish the album

By Azura, by Azura, by Azura! It's the Grand Champion! I can't believe it's you! Standing here! Next to me!

British folk and very meh.

Feel like I’m in a catholic mass.

Gear: Moondrop Variations Artwork: 🏟️🌜🪔 Production: 👂🩺🧈 Music: 🪕⚔️😂 Rating: 🗡️(🛡️)/5

Absolutely excruciating

Not a top 5,000 album chanting that really not good at all.

Very weird, medieval style folk music. Not a fan

Some hippie bullshit

God no. I couldn’t get past the first few songs.

This is a renaissance festival of an album.

Not for me

I just don't have the patience for this.

No, thank you

The Good: Who doesn’t like a basket of light? The Bad: Finding out that the basket has a hole in it… The Ugly: Ever tried cleaning up spilled light? Sure, I could just start this review off with a What The Actual Fuck!??!!?!??!!??! but why bother. I am realizing that I should be thankful that my parents had to sit through this shit instead of me… Maybe they love it… I don’t. Pentangle, 5? really? Oh, wait… read the wiki… Some of the guitar playing is pretty damn solid though. So they have that going for them… but that’s about it. I fear that I will blow a gasket if I see another “folk rock” album present itself… unless it is aqualung… which I will play now just to rinse the bad taste out of my mouth. Sorry for all those who love this.. 1*

A lot of sounds mashing together that do not agree with each other.

Ugh... Late 60s British Hippie Folk is not my jam. I kind of knew this from a podcast that I listen to but this confirms it. Definitely not a fan of Jacqui McShee's nor Bert Jansch. 1/5

There is no reason for this album to be on this list either. Could not finish it.

Not for me. Renaissance faire nonsense that wasn’t enjoyable to listen to. I tried to listen as long as I possibly could but found no enjoyment in it at all.

Reminds me of Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones, very folk-thematic, which makes sense, as it is a folk-rock band. Not my cup of tea, as while the music is beautiful, it is quite chaotic and monotone. Not a big fan of the tone of the voice of the female singer, as it is quite high all the time and just seems as she's not singing fully from her chest. Hunting Song and Sally Go Round the Roses were the highlights of the album.

Sounded like a group of music teachers and their "cool" music.

Oof tried to be open minded but couldn’t do it. Kinda liked some parts of Train song, though.

Jefferson Airplane crashed into Joan Baez and whatever this is emerged from the wreckage. I can almost imagine being really into it when it came out -- it combines really influential elements of music culture at the time -- but it also feels a little too much like a parlor trick, like the videos where someone plays a dozen songs using the same the chords. Okay, now what? I didn't feel a deeper connection to anything going on.

Speaking of not loving Ren-Faire-core… I eventually made it halfway through this. I can say without hesitation that 200 albums into this project, this was the album I hated the most.

Sadly another example of an album that did nothing for me. I don’t know whether this style of folk doesn’t connect with me, or whether it’s something else. I find this type of lyricism sometimes to be rather tedious, and I can’t explain why. The instrumentals were all nice enough, although I can’t say I was a massive fan of the vocals. Yeah this just kinda passed through me, nothing really drew me in.

This album felt like eating a kebab at midday, you know you won’t really appreciate it unless it’s 3am and you’ve had a gazillion beers. I felt the same way listening to this album sober, maybe if I had three tabs of LSD I’d appreciate it more. In saying that, night train made me think of a cut scene in a surf movie, where they’re driving around barren roads somewhere between get shacked off their melons

Exceptionally dull

Made me feel like I was at a ren fair and that’s not a compliment. I swear I could smell the BO and Mountain Dew.

Crap. Might have been listenable but for the vocals. I made it through once song fully (sally go round). All others were utterly unlistenable.

Not a fan of this churchy hippie music

Interesting. A 3 perhaps? At most. Might only be a 2. A one

I did not enjoy a moment of listening to this. The vocalists, both male and female, sounded like they were trying way too hard to sound ancient and folksy and whimsical, and it just doesn’t work at all.

The woman singing reminds me of the Yoko Ono clip with Chuck Berry and the man singing is like Morrissey singing but in lowercase. Absolute cacophony of sounds that just do not make anything pleasing or worth revisiting. Album #3 that I refuse to believe provided any real influence.

You cannot find me a more discouraging feeling than listening to this for 25 minutes and then finding out that you’ve been on shuffle and having to start over.

Gorgeous virtuosic album. I really didn't like it.

Not a huge fan of this genre of folk music

Sally go round the roses was alright. Otherwise hard pass for this entire album for me. Boring and annoying if you ask me. I hope it’s not the last album I listen to before I die.

I’m kind of a dork, so I would think that I would like this kind of thing, but it’s unbearable.

Soundtrack to a Renaissance Faire? Why is this on the list?

No me ha gustado nada.

Right away I’m wondering if they influenced Radiohead in any way. Musically at least. Vocally it sounds like Nico from her tenure with the Velvet Underground. That’s not a good thing. Ok, the Radiohead thing died with the ending of Light flight. Musically I can get behind this but man, the vocals are terrible. Like Nico and Joni Mitchell terrible. Yep, that’s all I have to say. Choice cut: Train Song

Not for me. 1/5

Guitars were great. Would be much improved with no horrendous singing

Look, I love weird experimental music. But this is weird and annoying, and ultimately just felt completely pointless. I was rather pleased about the fact that after it ended I don't have to listen to this again.

Couldn't wait for it to end

Let’s say I did listen to it because I only heard two songs and then turned it off.

Fuck, what a mixed bag. I actually really like the instrumentation here...but I just can't stand the vocals. I know they're genuine, but they sound to me like Maya Rudolph or Kristen Wiig is trying to perform the most annoying song in the world. Had to stop halfway through to save my sanity. Sticking to my rule that anything I can't force myself to get through gets a 1, even though I might rate an instrumental version of this as a 4. 1.4

kind of un memorable

Even in the time of '69's peace, love, and harmony, I feel like these folks would have booed off the Woodstock stage.

I do not like this.

not for me

When we get to flower children cult music I completely check out. Didn’t like this at all. 1/5

Discount Fairport Convemtion led by Dollar Store Judy Collins, piggybacking on the faux RenFaire fad of the late 60s. Not an original note is struck, nor a single original idea expressed. No wonder I never heard of 'em.

This was a tough listen. Many of the songs felt like church songs or some medieval band. Train Song was the only track that wasn’t completely annoying.

The kind of music that makes you miss the Black Death.

An hour of this was too much. My favorite track was I saw an angel. It was the least reminiscent of catholic hymns and also the last track.

I don't think I can give this a fair review. It's not my bag, and the genre has been taken too lightly by most.

Probably the most boring album on this list so far. I dont have a lot to say about this. 3/10 Favourite: None Least Favourite: The Cuckoo

If patchouli was an album...

Unlistenable

lets play the same song thrice just for the fun of it

If I could have given 0 I would. Maybe with the right drugs it would have been amazing.

This album sucked

Renaissance inspired hippie folk music

Just when I thought this album couldn’t get worse, another song would start. Hard pass.

Not my thing. Too old school minstrelly for me.

Dull, boring, boring, boring, dull, crap. 2 listens of this is going to be a struggle One listen is bad enough. Imagine sticking this on for pleasure. Imagine someone walking in when you were listening to this I think this might be my least favourite genre BAMO

I stopped caring pretty fast. Not for me. Lost steam after track one, truthfully.

Boring!!!!

Before this listen, I had never heard of Pentangle, their album Basket of Light, or any of its tracks—so I went in completely blind. What followed was unexpected and, at times, fascinating but not in a good way. I definitely wasn’t anticipating psychedelic, medieval folk music—but that’s exactly what I got. To be honest, it wasn’t really for me. While the album has a few nice moments, much of it is steeped in mystical, whimsical sounds that just didn’t resonate with me. It felt like I was listening to the soundtrack of a Renaissance fair rather than an album I’d want to revisit. Favourite track: Springtime Promises really stood out—beautifully arranged and easy to connect with. I also enjoyed the remix of Sally Go Round the Roses; it had a more contemporary, accessible vibe. Least favourite: Lyke-Wake Dirge was the low point for me. It felt more like a scene-setter for a medieval film than a standalone song. I just couldn’t get into it. Album artwork: I actually loved the cover art. It has a cool, retro charm that perfectly captures the era and aesthetic of the album.

Fail to see what the rush is to hear this before you die

'But when I awakened I found it not so.' When this record began I found it was not so. As it kept up, I found it was still not so. And as it came to its conclusion I found it was wholly not so. 'To purgatory fire thou com'st at last / And Christ receive thy saule.' Edmund Spenser was ridiculed for his employment of antiquated language in The Faerie Queene. If Spenser is old-school, Pentangle is grotesquely prehistoric. 'I have here a magic horn to deliver.' What's worse, you know exactly the influence an album like this had on subsequent groups stuck in the bullshit of Britishness: Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Queen, Uriah Heep, Gryphon.

Hippie, whiny shite.

C'est dur là !

Maybe I am too square, but I could not find any good side in this basket. I was not enlightened by either the music or the peculiar vocals.

1- Stars (1/15)

Terrible rock

yeah no...1 star.

If you're into Renaissance festivals and shit, this might be your jam.

What is this? Is this renaissance faire music? Hard pass. You could change it to 1000 albums to listen to before you die and kill me before I listen to this again. This sounds like the music the guy was playing in Animal House before Bluto smashes his guitar .

For some reason, I can handle the mysticism and Lord of the Rings-type songs when it comes to Led Zeppelin. That could be because they are a good band. One of the lyrics to "This Party Sucks" by the Wonder Years popped up in my head as I listened to this album: "I can't believe I ended up here again Watching this terrible band play songs I hate in the basement I can't believe that I got stuck here again While the kid with the dreads tells me he's smarter on acid" This is a "supergroup" of sorts. I have heard of only one of the members in this supergroup and that would be Bert Jansch. I listened to the deluxe edition and could not help but laugh when I saw there are three versions of Sally Go Round the Roses. I feel like it is a microcosm of this album and how this band seems very proud of themselves for doing nothing different of note. There is the regular version that is track 7, a re-recording in 2001 (most likely taking advantage of all the new technology 32 years later that will allow the band to add nothing new to the song) and a version that is a re-recording BUT...it's a longer version! "How much longer," is the question I asked myself. 2 seconds. It is 2 seconds longer than the re-recorded version. If the production engineer sneezed at the end of the song and forgot to stop recording, that could qualify a song as a longer track. The cover of the album is a picture of the band on a stage that looks like it could be lowered into lights that look a bit like the stereotypical view of what Hell would look like. It's a quality metaphor. Listening to this album makes a person wonder if simply lowering oneself into Hell would not be a less painful experience. Perhaps I'm being hard on this album but it is essentially everything I hate about the folk-rock era of the 60's. Trite band name, songs about like wizards and warlocks and shit and a feeling like I'm being forced to listen to someone's acid trip.

What a slog to get through. Vocals are very dull, and musically nothing to look out for. *Comic book guy voice* worst renaissance fair ever!

2/10 Thought it would be ok but i was mistaken. Vocals sound like tinnitus Favourite Song= Least Favourite Song=

Highlight: Springtime Promises In a nutshell: medieval sounding psychedelic folk. I could see this band opening for Donovan or The Mamas and The Papas in the 60’s. The band members are talented, no doubt about it. Too much falsetto, glockenspiel mixed too far forward, sitar was an odd inclusion. Overall: 2/10

I don't go to Renaissance Fairs, I don't believe in fairies, I don't read Tolkien and I don't listen to this shit. There is no way anyone could actually believe that you absolutely HAD TO hear this before you died.

60’s

I loathe this thin, reedy, vibratoed, technically accomplished but soulless and powerless woman's vocal style so much I can't listen long enough to form an opinion.

Absolutely awful. Some kind of Human Rights violation. That children as young as 2 can boot up YouTube and stumble across this deprivation is shocking.

Not for me.

Can't stand this style of singing. Music is cliche hippie tunes

Hippy shit. And like, not the good stuff, either...

Her voice is just irritating for me personally I don't know what you call this high tone, but it's a real kick in the ear.

Rhymes with "Basket Of Light".

Can't think of much good stuff to say about this

Put me to sleep!

borderline insufferable at times but there isnt a lack of talent here. most borderline 2 ive given so far. nvm they said "im going back to east virginia" but are from London. when will these brits learn.

Renaissance fest. 1/5

Unfavourable

Was ist noch schlimmer als 70er? Folk-Rock der 60er! Bah, ich finde daran nichts was mir gefàlllt ..

Her voice is generally awful

Oh god, I hate this.

Basket Of Light is crap, has no business being on here, isn't offensive but has no redeeming qualities. 1.

Completely silly

Why is this on the list??

This sounds like the soundtrack to a nightmare about a Renaissance Festival. Truly awful.

Late 60s folk was wild

Reminded me of a medieval carnival with people dancing in flowing garments chanting to the gods. Perhaps it I was high and had dropped some acid or mushrooms I would have appreciated it more.

It's like the worst parts of the Renaissance Festival in audio form.

Annoying. Not super annoying but whatever the hell they were going for does not come off as cute or enjoyable it's just annoying. If you love lute music or the black Plague or something I'm sure this is for you.

Pentangle - Basket of lights Wasn't sure what I was going to hear when this album popped up for today. But I feel like this would have been one of those artists you listen to at the Renaissance faire. Super folksy and reminiscent to early Simon & Garfunkel (Scarborough Fair). While I enjoy this music some of the time, I don't know if I was missing anything by never hearing it before now.  I recommend that y'all just skip over this one as it's not anything mind blowing. 1/5

This album made me laugh. I don’t think this was the artist had in mind.

Really not good.

Renaissance fair ass music

Some hippie cult shit. Not my jam.

This may have been good for people on acid fucking each other in the mud 55 years ago, but I had to listen to punk for 3 hours after this album to get the taste of patchouli out of my mouth. No thanks.

the worst kind of village-fete renaissance fair folk shit.

I think I like Fairport Convention better. Far better, actually. What else do you want me to say? It's skillfully played and sounds decent at first, generally speaking. But when that humourless mimicry of a medieval/gregorian chant turned up by track four, I couldn't help rolling my eyes up to the back of my head. Same with the overaffected tones of that lead singer. Who can listen to that shit seriously in 2023??? At least with Fairport Convention / Sandy Denny, you had many moments filled with genuine, tangible emotions. Likewise, the much-maligned The Incredible String Band (much-maligned on this app, at least) could display off-kilter psychedelic moods going beyond the occasional mandatory late-sixties sitar--giving some of their tunes a potential fresh flavor today. In comparison, most of *Basket Of Light* sounds like aimless noodling and empty exercises in style. It's biteless, tasteless, and harmless. Utterly boring record. Nice glockenspiel arrangements, though. I wish I could erase everything else, and only keep those. :D So, just like that other reviewer's wife, I roll my eyes and turn away. I'm aware that Bert Jansch is supposed to be a legendary British folk artist, but I'll try my luck with him on a solo album, I guess... 1/5 for the purposes of this list, which translates to a 6/10 grade for more general purposes. Next, please. Number of albums left to review: 383 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 280 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 146 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 197 (including this one)

I thought this was bloody awful. May I never have to listen to this again. Interestingly, the last couple of songs were almost bearable - maybe I got used to it? Still don’t like it. Listens: 1 is enough for me Fave track: Cold Mountain Rating: 1
