crap
2.9 - Music you hear at Hot Topic when your goth girlfriend is shopping for a new, vinyl halter top.
It’s not really to my taste, but it’s not a bad album. It mostly sounds the same through every track. It’s a quick listen.
Had my head nodding the whole time! Definitely enjoyed this more than the Poppy album which is comparable genre-wise. This album was just more fun and sillier and I really dug that. I saw a review that said it sounds like wrestling entrance music and I agree but in a positive way
Er det det her unge mennesker lytter til. Havde jeg ikke behøvet at høre før jeg dør
Nu metal revival er bare en ESSENTIEL musikalsk bølge fra 20erne
not really into the modern rap rock revival on this one. A Dark Place For Something Beautiful is a good dark Muse inspired track. Noise-pop? that's a good name for it.
This had some good moments but I grew tired of it quite quickly.
Powerful bass lines, great energy. Still need more listens, but these women are talented. 4/5!
Mercifully short. There’s nothing to get excited about here.
This is fucking wack
Metal & pop. Nothing in this makes this worth a listen but that can be said about a lot of this author’s picks.
3.3 2x OAK to SLC + SLC layover
полтора раза послушала, пас (не надо на меня кричать)
I didn’t care for this
Hmm, already a little worried by the look of the cover, though I LOVE the hair. The punk is very cool, the rap struggles, like they are there but don't want to really push it. I keep expecting a song to take off, but then it will settle back into some version of near-acceptability.
Another 3.5, only because I wasn't totally in love with the tendency to stick to syncopated beats for everything — music breaks, beats, the rap/singing accents. But I was intrigued enough to want to watch a video to better understand what the band dynamic is and it lifted my appreciation, and rating, accordingly. Rock on!
It's quite an assault on the senses. I didn't hate it. I might have even liked it. Hard to say. I feel like I haven't blinked for several hours now. will need to revisit.
Good fun
This went harder than I had expected. A bit raw, and aggressive in ways that didn't necessarily grab my attention, but still a well crafted and entertaining album. Definitely worth a listen.
Weak
I'm tired boss. More, terrible compressed pop/metal. I can't deal with this shit anymore. Best Tracks: Antagonist; Cleopatra; Choose Your Fighter
This album starts off strong enough, but by the end it really loses steam. The tracks become less interesting with fewer ear worms and mostly nu metal riffs. Not bad but doubt it'll have too much staying power. 3/5
Eh... This one is not it. Mercury Prize nominee is a good credentials for inclusion, but there's at least 20 better inclusions among those nominees (and actual winners) from the last 5 years.
Not in my edition of the book! 2022. 1 star. Spice Girls with extra thrashy guitars, but without the tunes. Utterly pointless. WTF is this doing on the list?
A very fun and energetic synthy-rock album that shouldn't be on this list.
Like much of modern pop-metal, Nova Twins are a group completely off my radar. I don't really like this, but I don't hate it either. It's catchy and sonically pleasing and annoying in the same way that Rob Zombie is. I could see some of these songs becoming lodged memetically in my brain like Dragula. For something trying to crossover into pop, I do like the gonzo shrieking in almost every track. 2.25/5
"I wish there was more metal represented on the list." Monkeys paw curls.
Super
im not above this kind of numetal retro worship, and the softer vocals work pretty well in contrast with the heavy industrial instrumentation. too bad other acts like Poppy, 100 Gecs, shit even Rico Nasty have gone for similar sounds with way better results. Even relative "legacy" acts like Bring Me The Horizon for that matter, who the Nova Twins are pretty clearly biting here, have effectively updated their sound into new exciting territory. This is just pure overproduced pastiche, and one of the most definitive examples of how navel-gazing this list can get in relation to modern music, probably because it uses out of touch music awards as a bigger deciding factor than genuine cultural influence and grassroot fanbases. Empty genre homages are all the rage apparently. It wasn't enough to practically only highlight numetal from the vibrant 90s metal explosion (even including hated acts like limp bizkit over any doom sludge or black metal entries?). Now we're gonna include even more of it! I had never heard of the Nova Twins, honestly it was surprising to see it even included in the latest edition, and after having listened I can confirm there's absolutely no reason such a painfully mediocre (not even really bad, just painfully meh hence the 2 stars) should have been picked as a highlight of 2022 - a far more solid year than this record would imply! Only keeping it relatively mainstream, we could have had Big Thief's excellent album, Kendrick's Mister Morale, Rosalia's beautiful and off-kilter Motomami, Chat Pile or Ethel Cain's strong debuts, Viagra Boys or Fontaines D.C.'s modernized post-punk statements, Sudan Archives massive theatrical RnB opus, or any of the UK windmill scene's installments... instead we got Supernova. oh and Fetch The Bolt Cutters got dropped to make space for it. lol.
A new addition! Came in with low expectations which h were somewhat surpassed. I think they'd be much better live.
Female fronted nu-metal? If you're old enough to remember Kittie, it's time re-up on Voltarol. Either way, listen to Kittie's Spit for some good female fronted nu-metal! They'll show you how it's done 😻
Ekki það versta sem ég hef heyrt af þessum lista, en það er þó lítið hrós. Þurftum við endurlífgað nu-metal? Ég segi nei og verið úti.
I kinda liked this one. Not what I was expecting at all. Was it great, no but definitely different
Not my cup of tea.
Just strange
Supernova is a ferocious statement of intent. If you like heavy riffs driven by inventive pedalwork, massive rhythm sections, and punk-rock swagger with modern electronic textures, it’s essential listening.
Not sure I saw anything 1001 worthy In here
The noise …… genres of music are often a challenge for me, but this came off as really urgent and quite compelling. These are powerful songs that hit hard. The Nova Twins know what they’re doing and do it very very well!
2/3
Noisy noise
I didn't think terribly much of this at first, since I thought it was just two women singing and rapping over a backing band. The fact that they're doing both vocals and instrumentals definitely makes this a lot cooler. I think parts of it feel generic, but overall it's a cool album. The music is solid, and the harmonies are a nice touch. They seem like they would be fun to see live 4/5
I am so conflicted. This is absolutely trashy and something an NPC would absolutely love. It's so bad that I kind of love it.
For the love of charlie Sheen
Won a Mercury award. Yep. No.
Yes, not bad at all. The lyrics are good, edgy and verging on the violent side, "I'm the one your thinking of when you look at your wife"..ouch. All sorts of gritty imagery, the blackness holding them together. I get a much greater rock and roll sense of who and what they are than so many of the other things flung our way recently. Good mix of sounds, some rocking stuff, bit of techno, they are clearly playing around with sounds and a lot of it lands. This is good, respect.
Follow the peak of nu metal's popularity in the early 2000s, the dominant forms of metal would fluctuate between metalcore, djent, and blackgaze. None of these would find nearly the same mainstream success as nu metal, but nu metal would still lurk in the shadows, waiting for its time to strike. Indeed, there would be a renewed interest in nu metal around the start of the 2020s, particularly from women. Artists like Grimes and Rina Sawayama would dabble in it by incorporating it into their usual pop sound, while Poppy practically dove headfirst into it. Nu metal was always somewhat oriented to pop songwriting structures, but this revival would be led by pop instead, making for a more accessible and polished take on nu metal. From this, we got Nova Twins. Though not actually twins, the duo of Amy Love and Georgia South are close childhood friends who held a keen interest in blending rap and rock since their music career beginnings in the 2010s. While their debut album in 2020 was well-received by critics, it would be the sophomore release Supernova that granted them even more mainstream success, as well as being their most nu metal release to date. Much of Supernova aims to challenge the systemic biases of race and gender which I quite like, but is done so in a way that is sonically uninteresting. The caveat to releasing a nu metal rap rock album 20 years after Chocolate Starfish is that you need to be doing something more with it than simply conveying the ideas in your lyrics. A lot of this feels like Nova Twins are not particularly interesting in exploring new ways to fuse hip hop with rock or metal, or even trying to deliver enticing riffs for the listener to chew on. I can see why critics wanted to praise this so much and why it landed a spot on the Mercury Prize shortlist, but I don't think this is the kind of album that will have much of a legacy or staying power 5 to 10 years from now.
Okay this gas beginning to end
I remember Cleopatra from when it was released and I loved it. The novelty wears off over a whole album though. There’s zero nuance or variation, it’s just FULL ON AND LOUD right the way through
It's a very modern girlie take on a heavier genre. While it (likely) will be irrelevant in 5 years, it's interesting that to hear in the now.
another album that i can see from my last.fm that i listened to on release and promptly forgot about! it made a little more of an impression on me this time around but it's pretty easy for me to see why i had that experience originally; it comes out of the gate pretty hot but it's pretty one-note for the duration, and that one note is not enough to my tastes to keep me engaged. pretty good, but there aren't enough change ups and surprises to keep me coming back long term
This feels like a manufactured band. I don't know that it is, but I feel it in my bones.
full of energy and completely boring
What is this? Do I love it? Do I hate it?
Min måg tyckte åtminstone att det var bra. Jag är mer skeptisk. Kan väl vara hygglig att ge den en tvåa i alla fall.
Weird, another UK band I've never heard of. Funny how that works out. But, really, they were alright. Didn't strike me as particularly groundbreaking but I found myself toe tapping to some of the tracks.
Disposable crap
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Antagonist
This rocked and had great beats. Also sounded a bit like video game music and a lot of the songs sounded the same. Conflicted about the rating… (3.5)
It's interesting
DID NOT LIZTEN UUTF
Very interesting, surprising; fun subversion of genres
I expect they'd be amazing live. But on record, it sounds like one idea spread very thinly.
Not our thing. We did not enjoy this.
I am shocked that i went from getting Deloused in the Comatorium to Supernova because that mean't i got 2 top 10 albums back to back. This was my first album of the new additions and man oh man, what a way to start it off. This album represents so much of what i love about nu-metal bands like Korn, Static-X and many others. The guitars are heavy and distorted in all the best ways, the synths were awesome, the album cut a quick pace and the melodies were so catchy. I really can't think of anything that this album does wrong, It is just nothing but a love letter to nu-metal fans like myself so it's an easy 5 star album. Best Song: Antagonist Worst Song: Power
Nova Twins' *Supernova* is a sophomore album that arrives with the weight of expectation and the fire of a band refusing to be boxed in. Released in June 2022, it was met with near-universal critical acclaim, earning a Mercury Prize nomination and a Metacritic score of 92 . It is a record that is simultaneously a celebration of Black female identity, a genre-dismantling sonic assault, and a sharp, witty declaration of self-worth. ### 🎤 Lyrics: Wit, Rage, and Reclamation Lyrically, *Supernova* is a masterclass in swagger and precision. The album largely eschews the "woe is me" narrative of struggle, instead focusing on **reclamation and agency** . Amy Love's writing is sharp, funny, and politically charged without ever feeling like a lecture. The opening tracks set the tone. "Antagonist" is a direct, snarling challenge to anyone who doubts their place in rock: *"Look me in the face – say you've never met someone like me"* . This flows into "Cleopatra," a powerful celebration of Black womanhood written in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, featuring the unforgettable line: *"Blacker than the leather that's holding our boots together"* . The lyrics also showcase a healthy dose of horror-comic glee. "K.M.B." (Kill My Boyfriend) is a playful, dark-rap fantasy that recalls the Ramones' sense of humor, while "Enemy" delivers a hilarious, dismissive kiss-off: *"Your girlfriend moshes to our shows... she's only cheating because it's getting stale at home"* . The writing is concise and punchy, fitting perfectly into the album's brisk 31-minute runtime . ### 🎸 Music: A Kaleidoscopic Fusion Musically, Nova Twins (Amy Love on guitar/vocals, Georgia South on bass) operate in a space where **punk, nu-metal, rap, and electronic music collide** . The most striking element is the absence of a traditional drummer; instead, the low-end is driven by Georgia South's heavily distorted, fuzzed-out bass, which often mimics the texture of a guitar or a synth . The album is a "mindblowing blast of distorted noise-pop" . Tracks like "Choose Your Fighter" and "Toolbox" inject a rave-like, dancefloor pulse into the heavy riffs, while "Puzzles" nods to the staccato melodies of Destiny's Child . The band's love for nu-metal is evident in the start-stop dynamics and the occasional rap flow, but they never let the nostalgia overpower their modern, futuristic edge. ### 🎛️ Production: Bigger, Cleaner, and Cohesive If their debut was a raw, abrasive statement, *Supernova* is the **polished, high-definition upgrade** . Produced by the band alongside Jim Abbiss (tracks 2-7, 11) and Romesh Dodangoda, the record sounds massive . The production wisely gives every element room to breathe. The bass is bone-rattlingly heavy, the electronic glitches are crisp, and the vocals are pushed to the front, ensuring the attitude and wit of the lyrics are never buried. The album flows incredibly well, moving from the hype-building intro "Power" to the brooding, atmospheric closer "Sleep Paralysis" without a wasted moment . The sound is described as "R2D2 breakdancing in an industrial spin-dryer," but the band's tight arrangements keep the chaos controlled . ### 🎯 Themes: Identity, Power, and Resilience The core themes of *Supernova* are **self-empowerment, racial identity, and resilience**. The album serves as a "f\*\*k you" to systemic barriers and the narrow expectations of who gets to make rock music . - **Black Joy and Power:** Tracks like "Cleopatra" and "Fire & Ice" center Blackness not as a site of struggle, but as a source of regal strength and beauty. - **Defiance:** "Antagonist" and "Enemy" are anthems for anyone who has been told they don't belong, turning the tables on the accusers. - **Vulnerability:** The album isn't all bravado. "A Dark Place for Somewhere Beautiful" offers a rare moment of exposed nerves, showing that resilience often comes from acknowledging pain . ### 🌍 Influence and Impact *Supernova* solidified Nova Twins as **torchbearers for the future of rock** . Its influence lies in its unapologetic **genre-fluidity**. By refusing to be categorized, the duo opened doors for a new generation of artists (especially women of color) in the alternative scene. The album's critical success (Mercury Prize nomination) and its strong chart performance (UK No. 27) proved that challenging the status quo could also be commercially viable . The record's impact is perhaps best summarized by the fact that it doesn't just sound like a "rock album"—it sounds like the future of heavy music, where genre is treated as a tool rather than a cage . ### ⚖️ Pros and Cons | Pros | Cons | | :--- | :--- | | **Ferocious Energy:** The album rarely lets up, delivering a consistent adrenaline rush from start to finish. | **Occasional Lyrical Simplicity:** Some critics and listeners have noted that certain lyrics can feel a bit "juvenile" or straightforward compared to the complexity of the music . | | **Genre-Defying Creativity:** The seamless blend of nu-metal, punk, rap, and electronic is executed with rare confidence and cohesion . | **Short Runtime:** At just over 30 minutes, some fans might be left wanting more, especially since a few tracks feel like they end just as they hit their stride. | | **Exceptional Production:** The sound is huge, clear, and perfectly balances the raw aggression with danceable grooves . | **Slight Dip in the Middle:** While not a fatal flaw, a handful of later tracks (like "Sleep Paralysis") are sometimes considered less immediate than the album's standout singles . | | **Important Representation:** The album provides a vital platform for Black women in rock, delivering its message with wit and power rather than preaching . | | **Verdict:** *Supernova* is a triumph of attitude and execution. It is a record that demands to be played loud, offering a cathartic, intelligent, and deeply fun listen that cements Nova Twins as one of the most vital voices in modern rock.
Who are Nova Twins?? (*Wikipedias furiously*) Oh sick, they performed with Muse, Skunk Anansie & Little Simz. I like those artists. By the way, all three of those artists were removed from the book to make way for newer artists, like Nova Twins. >:0 I predicted that Simz would gain an album, with S.I.M.B.I., not lose one! Good thing I'm not a gambler. However, imagine a fusion of Muse, and Skunk Anansie, and Little Simz, and you get a decent approximation of what this album sounds like. But also, like, nü metal is here as well? Why are we bringing that back again? I'm not sure what to take away from this fairly short album. Is it that bringing back 2000s rock tropes is more important to showcase than, like, anyone from the "Windmill Scene" (Black Country New Road, The Last Dinner Party, Maruja)? Is it that everyone has the right to make butt rock, not just white men? In that case I'm 100% on board. The Nova Twins are probably a killer live act. HL: "Antagonist", "Cleopatra", "K.M.B." October 23, 2026
Bland stock rock. Cut it and put in one of the WWF theme cds and it’s an upgrade.
This was certainly a unique album. I'm kind of undecided on how much I liked it. I liked the energy but it felt pretty corny.
Eh
Powerful fun
Oli hyvää ja tiukkaa soittoa. Biisit ei oikein eronnut toisistaan, vaan tuntui samalta pötköltä. Sopivan lyhyt, että pysyi tuon tasapaksuuden vuoksi kiinnostus yllä.
I'm split on this one. Including noise elements in pop-rock would probably be more interesting to me if that wasn't something that had been happening for decades already. Not really sure how this album deserves to be on the list more than albums like Plague Soundscapes by The Locust. Nova Twins are certainly more accessible (pedestrian), so that probably explains it. Its not actively pissing me off or anything, I'm just confused by its inclusion. All that said, it's a competently recorded album and it's only half an hour long. Hard to be upset at that.
1.9 Well that was wank. I felt like my dad probably felt when I got really into Marilyn Manson as a teenager, but... worse surely?! At least some Manson songs were interesting, this felt very much like trying to sound hardcore to 12 years olds with very little actual substance. Hopefully this is just a gateway for kids to get into rock/metal rather than being a final destination, because Jesus Christ that was bad. Reading the reviews of this album on wiki make me think I'm living in some sort of alternate dimension but fuck it. Shite.
J’ai trouvé que ça sonnait très 90s. D’une agressivité ludique quoique incarnée, mais pas sûre de comprendre en quoi ça se démarque.
"[wub wub] [distortion screech]" pretty much sums it up, thank you, previous reviewer. I saw a bit of these on TV in Glastonbury coverage and they look fun live. If they were playing Psychfest and didn't clash with anything interesting, I'd probably go along. In terms of listening to this record in particular at home or anywhere else, not really. I agree Taxi is miles better than anything on this album. Anyway, here is a short and inexhaustive list of (mostly female) artists who released essential albums in the last 5 years and still have no representation in the book. Starting with the brits: Caroline Lambrini Girls Cate Le Bon Nilufer Yanya Beth Gibbons Richard Dawson These New Puritans Young Fathers non-British Arooj Aftab Gelli Haha Horsegirl Jaimie Branch ROSALIA Alan Sparhawk Sirom Julia Jacklin and some more established ones for good measure. Courtney Barnett Chapell Roan Olivia Rodrigo
This album isn’t doing anything new and I’m bit confused how it ended up on the list. However, I did enjoy its genre mashing and heard a lot of their influences throughout.
This LP started off strong but ran out of ideas quickly. I enjoyed the mix of in-your-face guitar with synth hip-hop elements, and the overall instrumentation felt distinct from the usual 1001 fare. There's no real dynamic contrast or melodic presence, though, to distinguish one track from another, meaning the album falls into the common trap of running out its one sound in about 3-4 tracks. I could see individual tracks fitting in well on a high-energy playlist, but the album as a whole fails to change things up enough to be a must-listen.
insane cover, i love it
Pretty impressive stuff for two people. Not really all my cup of tea but some is very fun and lots of energy.
Welp, we had a good run, but we've reached the first album that I just do not care for. I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a fan of this album. Now, I should start by being somewhat positive, and I will say that this isn't a bad album at all. It's just not my thing for various reasons. But, I'll say this. I respect the vision. I respect the idea of trying to make a rap-rock/nu-metal type album in 2022 from a woman's perspective. That is objectively an interesting idea and I'm glad that the Nova Twins saw it through. Unfortunately the album has problems that cause me to not really enjoy the album a whole ton aside from the novelty. For one, the production is kind of bad. I'm not a fan of the vocal effects on the singing and the whole album is just too damn loud. I love me some loud music, but this is kinda overkill in my opinion. But what about the music itself? Is it good? Well, it's probably the best part of the album, but even then I still found it to be somewhat average. There's some decent guitar work, and there are enough modern influences to make the album feel like it's not solely looking backwards, but it's also not particularly engaging either. This brings me to maybe my biggest issue with the album. It's pretty repetitive. The songs all sound pretty similar and the lyrics amount almost entirely to "I'm a boss bitch who wants to KILL you." I respect the attitude and I'm not gonna hate on a boss bitch, but I was definitely hoping for some more variety in lyrical matter. Oh well. At least the album's short. Overall, Supernova is fine, but it leaves a lot to be desired given the exciting concept. I wish I liked this more, but as it stands, it's pretty average. Low 3/5.
Had never heard of these before and went in blind. Completely unexpected album, and a pleasant surprise
J’écouterai pas ça à chaque matin, mais je respecte la boldness du projet, pis la pochette rock très fort, j’aime
Now we're talkin'... I expected some cheesy Club Music bangers best appreciated by British teenagers on ecstasy. Instead, Nova Twins deliver some genuine genre-bending originality that owes at least as much to Alec Empire, Atari Teenage Riot, Slayer, and Ministry as it does to any Pop act.
That was fun. It reminded me of nu-metal without the self-loathing. I’d listen again. I don’t think I’d call it foundational, but I do think it demonstrates the UK-centricity of this list
I actually thought this one was very cool. Like a 2020s take on nu-metal where they sauce in some hyperpop
This should tick a lot of boxes for me, but it doesn't, it's too generic and redundant. I'll give it a begrudging two stars, but no more than that. I usually like a short album when it's not great, but this just felt low effort.
I’m sorry this was shite.
Best Song: Sleep Paralysis. I bet that this song live, with a synchronized light show, goes incredibly hard. Worst Song: Enemy. This feels like a song that plays during a villain montage of a superhero movie that takes itself too seriously. This is musically Marvel. Overall: Fun, very heavily-produced pop/punk/rock. Sometimes I felt like the level of production and distortion got in the way of the music, but overall it was an enjoyable album.
Too over the top
It was a fun listen, not sure I'd ever listen again though
A wild hyperpop rehasing of nu-metal combining thick heavy downtuned riffs and hyperactive rap vocals - it's much more silly, deconstructed, and playful than the self-serious original, and better for it - taking the undirected 90s macho frat boy rage and turning it into a set of decontextualized symbols and sounds to rearrange and resignify as an explosively camp noise. It still kind of sucks to listen to though.
Favorite Track: Cleopatra
This was fun. I don’t think I’ll be listening again. Not sure who the target audience is. Someone said it sounded like shitty WWE entrance music and I couldn’t stop thinking about that for the whole album. So accurate. Why was this put on the list? 2/5
I didnt understand it, kind of noisy
Maybe I'm just bitter because they removed Fetch The Bolt Cutters and Mars Volta from this edition
It’s a tough job, being the guy who predicts which relatively new neo-numetal albums are going to stand the test of time and prove to be essential, but I guess someone’s gotta do it
Wow. It just goes to show that girls can do anything boys can do. Such as make shitty inconsequential nu-metal that I hate and that only an absolute fool would put on a list of 1001 albums you must hear before you die. Have we gotten every single Brit that has been within 100 meters of a recording studio yet? Were these the last two? I hate this fucking project.
Not what I expected but I'm here for it. It feels like a 2020s take on nu metal, bringing in a lot of modern elements while maintaining that classic mix of rock and rap. I'll have to listen to them more.
Different... I wasn't a fan
This is pretty annoying. Some tracks are focused more on style than songwriting. And on the tracks where the songwriting stood out, it did so in a bad way. There are some sick metal riffs throughout — I have to give Nova Twins that much. But the riffs are paired with some cringey lyrics that are more in line with modern raunchy rap songs. There’s a lot of empty shit-talking that I hear in a lot of new rap. As the album goes on, there’s more of a nu-metal / hard rock influence. The music works better on those tracks, but I still found the lyrics mostly cringey. Credit where it’s due: I’ve never heard anything exactly like this before. But I don’t think it works.
monday night football ad break lead-in core. not nearly the worst thing i've heard but pretty generic sounding. positive twist on the buttrock formula to have music that sounds like this sang by women who know how to sing. doesn't really move me otherwise. did i really need to hear this before i died?
Ok, it's hard to argue that this is any kind of essential album, but I definitely don't hate it. It's described as rap-rock but honestly, it reminds me more of the kind of industrial-influenced dark synth pop that hit its peak around the turn of the millenium. I hard influence from bands like Orgy and The Faint here. The production was handled by Jim Abbiss who worked with a lot of 90s electronic artists like Bjork, Massive Attack and the Sneaker Pimps, and I think that really reflects back here. Exploring their discography a bit more, I also see that Nine Inch Nails' live drummer, Ilan Rubin, worked with Nova Twins a lot on their next album. So maybe not an album that needed to be on this list, but it's pretty good for what it is. I can't really think of any other newer artists making music like quite this. I bet they'd be a blast to see live.
Okay, the cover of this threw me off for a minute. I did not expect hard rock. Too bad it wasn't very good.
Had never heard of these gals before so I was very curious going in. The music is fine. Definitely a little cringey with so many songs just being them bragging and acting tough, which, just to be clear, is an aesthetic I would find cringe for anyone doing it to this level. Don’t think I need to hear it again but yeah it’s just decent. 5/10
There were some catchy tunes on here, didn’t mind it at all.
A fun and engaging jaunt through a mashup of genres but the album doesn't standout in any particular way and its place on this list is a curious choice.
Disco un poco cañero con intensidad variable. Suena a moderno y a variedad de estilos. Guitarrero, eléctrico y con fuerza. Voz femenina que no desentona. No está mal, pero no termino de engancharme a él.
Loud and unapologetically bratty. Which to be honest I respect. I try to go in without any prior judgement but I wasn’t expecting much from this, and it was pretty enjoyable. There are much better modern rock albums that should be on this list, but there’s also much worse rock out there right now (GvF), give it a listen
Already familiar with the band an album. I think they're a good entry of females in nu-metal/sludge/rap-rock. Short album, but starts with some pretty catchy songs.
Not for me. I wonder if this will last into future editions of the list, but I appreciate the energy and wide range of sounds and influences.
Idk who in the world these ladies are, and the music is not my style. It is unique.
OMG!! We just don't get rock/metal music like this in recent years aside from Mäneskin, and Supernova by Nova Twins properly slaps. They even incorporate rap, which was unexpected but not unappreciated, and they somehow pull it off. Supernova sounds so fresh as a result. The different genres keep it catchy and engaging, too. The music goes hard and contains good lyrics--and even has amusing concepts like "Choose Your Fighter". The entire album is a vibe, which I'm a sucker for. I'm just obsessed. Also, we love a short album length! If you've got something to say, you don't need an hour and a half to ramble on. Then again, because I loved this album so much, I feel it goes by too fast!
Mikä on syy laittaa muutenkin rockia täyteen tuputetulle listalle 2020-luvun retro-rockia? 2/5
With around 40 to go when a new edition of the book dropped, I suppose I'll have quite a few 2020s albums to hear before I finish. I try to keep up with the important releases but this one somewhat passed me by, so good to give it a listen. Supernova was quite fun, a bit of a 00s throwback with the rap-rock hybrid which was so popular in nu-metal. Nicki Minaj meets Linkin Park, perhaps. The guitars and loud production reminded me a bit of Sleigh Bells as well. I enjoyed it but it sounded a bit samey after a while.
Meh
It's fun and they have a particular sound
Didn’t realise nu-metal was back. Assume it will go away again soon. Can’t see this being in the next iteration of the book.
7/10
Kind of annoying honestly
This album reminds me of a weird mix of artists, from The Prodigy to the Sugababes to Royal Blood. Fun album, but it doesn't really belong on a list like this.
Too much yelling and hitting noise buttons; not musical enough.
Lol, I remember this dropping in 2022 and it felt like a much needed breath of fresh air. Listening to it now, it seems I genuinely just needed some fresh air after being in Covid-mode for a couple of years. Yes, it's a unique genre blend, but Supernova (and Nova Twins in general) have a hard time shaking off the gimmicky vibes. The albums lives in a peculiar world that seems like a blend between a PS1 fighting game and the hype portion of sporting events in huge arenas.
I could sense the Mercury Prize nomination from miles away. Supernova is an awful piece of work, where Nova Twins juggle with a wide array of genres and catch very few of them. The 30 minute runtime felt like hours and I couldn't wait for this hyperactive and silly record to be over with.
I mean the first song I thought I was gonna die because of how little it sounded like something I would like but it only slightly grew on me. Not horrible but not for me.
cmon
Pop industrial rap metal from London. Sure I guess. It’s okay, a bit behind the times though
Some ladies rockin it out in a 2020s way, shoutout to not being flavor of the day whisper voice pop
If these girls weren't British, Dimery wouldn't have put this album on here. It's cute/fine, but if he didn't have a massive hardon for UK albums I think even he would admit that this isn't worthy of 1,001.
This was mostly pretty fun and also quite short.
Worthy addition to the updated list. Comes pretty close to capturing their energy at gigs
Too angry for me.
I like Nova Twins a lot, but I feel that Who Are the Girls? or Parasites & Butterflies would have been a better album choice over Supernova.
Nope
This just sounds fake
2.5/5
Potential, mostly meh though.
While far from terrible, I don't think this was good. It was ok at best. There's something about a lot of modern Rock to me that just sounds kinda sterile, safe and uninteresting. I think the way things are produced makes it so bands don't have unique or identifiable traits that can stand out. Honestly, I think aside from rare instances where albums are undeniably great, we should maybe hold off on sticking stuff into list such as this where I don't think this is 1001 albums to listen to before you die material.
This is so nothingy- why add something simply because it's new? Looking at some of the albums that have been overlooked makes me think Dimery is losing the plot.
I absolutely despise the production on this. Muddy overloaded midrange hell on earth. Completely obnoxious.
I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would after the first couple of songs. Didn't love it either though. 2.5 stars, rounding to 3.
Genuinely surprised that this (1) is a 2022 album and (2) that it's on this list. I'd have pegged this for a '90s to early 2000's techno rock made for some video game movie. It's got an energetic vibe of its own, but that's about it.
Not really for me.
Absolutely Giles Grimandi. Which is to say, grim. What a load of toot this is - it's loud without any real aggression or impact, it's shrill and irritating, and it's easy to see why Spotify has Limp Bizkit as a related artist. The intro is the best song, largely due to brevity.
It felt a lot lomnger than half an hour, and didn't have much to offer.
I’ve never heard of Nova Twins before, but this album cover looks silly as hell. But silly in a way that means it might actually be amazing. I’m not quite sure what to expect from this album, but I’m excited to join these ladies on what appears to be some sort of intergalactic mission. Woof, a big swing and a miss for the newest albums to get added to the list. This album was a lot of bark (grating and annoying at that) but no bite. Despite the high energy of Supernova, I could not get into this album at all. The music here was the worst mashup of sorta-metal and sorta-dubstep, and the lyrics and vocals were not a lot better. Nothing on here stood out to me as noteworthy or particularly well done, and even at a brisk thirty minutes, this album felt like an eternity. The reviewer who described this album as wrestler intro music was spot on. Maybe these songs would have hyped me up if I only heard them for twenty seconds, but even two minutes of this at a time was too much for me. I normally enjoy something different, but this wasn’t for me at all.
Well that was certainly not how I expected this album to sound based on that album cover. Actual not that bad, even if this sound has been done better a billion times already.
really fun and energetic! Good hype music. parts of it sound like they'd be in a Bratz movie/game lol, I know that sounds weird but this is a compliment in the best way. I love each of their vibes and they seem so cool!!!
Feels like a gimmick, No stand outs.
Not the worst, but certainly has that over-produced feel that makes everything sound like pretty much the same song. Low 3? nah, high 2.
Crazy this was added and a band like Beach House was removed.
Supernova is another alright addition to the list, a modern take on nu-metal pop fusion, probably gets a low 3/5 because it was fun enough but I don't think I'll listen again. KMB was good.
I'm not sure we need more rap rock in the 2020s. Perhaps surprisingly preferred the more hip hop heavy sections to the more rock/metal heavy sections. The latter sounded a little naff in all honesty. It had the decency to stop after 30 mins, but even that was about 10 mins too long. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Cleopatra Date listened: 02/11/26
This is not for me - respect for how well they rock out but a bit too much brit rap rock for me to get into it.
Umm… a metal album by two women?? OH HELL YEAH!! Okay so the bass? Drops. The guitar? Shreds. The drums? Amazing. The voices? Pretty damn good. The lyrics?? MADE ME CRINGE!! Ugh there was so so much potential here. They reminded me of Icon For Hire at first and I was so into it. But my God some of those lines were bad. -1 star for that. But I was overall rocking. None of the songs really made it to my playlist though. What a shame (Gordon Ramsey voice).
Great find! Original, power rock duo.
Great album to restart the list. It sounds exactly as I can see the modern rock music. They captured the feeling of the 2020s
I can see why this is included. Female punk/rap duo, with a bit of techno in there. Can't judge an album by the cover, I thought this was going to be a dance pop kinda album. Definitely not, particularly with the hardcore lyrics. It was fun, but I don't know how often I would listen to it. Top tracks: "Choose Your Fighter," "Sleep Paralysis"
Some decent riffs on this album but it has a very Eurovision feel. Takes itself a bit too seriously and just has the sort of production that sounds like a solid 7th place finish from Moldova. The outfits probably contribute to this a bit too to be fair. Doesn't stick around too long and I like Eurovision so still enjoyed this one play through, just not sure it would bring me back. 2.5.
Power, Cleopatra, and A Dark Place were bangers. Really didn't know who they were or what to expect. Pretty tight writing and production. Not remotely sparse, super layered, but not overdone. Right level of aggression for me too.
Had no idea what to expect with this, but the album art reminded me of aqua... Thankfully that's as far as the similarities went. Almost sounds a bit like nu metal. Late 90s sounding anyway in parts. I'm not fully sold though and I'd had enough by the end even with it being very short 2.5
Didn't mind this. Some catchy songs.
It may not scream ‘all time classic’ but it’s still good. A strong collection of meaty riffs mixed with twisted pop hooks and a horror film sensibility means Nova Twins stand out as something fun and a bit different. Great live too, I can confirm. 3.5
2/5
Not what I expected. Enjoyed it but not enough to listen again.
This Electro-Punk album feels like stepping into a colourful, high-energy arcade where every machine is flashing and buzzing, and I'm not quite sure which one deserves my attention. Distorted bass, heavy riffs, electronic effects and Amy Love's assertive vocals collide with punk, rap and pop elements, creating a sound that's punchy and full of attitude. There is enough variety to keep things interesting, and some moments catch my ear, but the constant shifts and forceful delivery don't always leave a lasting impression. I don't dislike the experience; it has energy and personality, and the songs move along briskly. Still, when it ends, I'm not sure whether I want to go back for another round or simply move on to something else. It's a decent first encounter, but not yet an album I'm eager to revisit.
I appreciate a 30 min album
Better than I expected but not for me
I had fun listening to this one. I don’t know if it should have been added to the original list, but I found it interesting enough. I probably wouldn’t listen to it again.
It was fine
I get that it's for this generation. But I'm not plugged in enough. Feels Tiktok alternative.
Well this was fun pop-rock nonsense. I don't believe for a second that its legacy will persist into the next edition of the book.
Has its moments. 3/5
Les instruments font du métal/ techno mais les vocals sont beaucoup trop pop.
Just don't find it unique for the style.
A 2022 album on a 2026 "most important albums of all time" list? Why?? And you know damn well this record didn't cause a cultural phenomenon (like BRAT, for example). For its mark of "belongs on this list", Supernova doesn't score highly. Granted, Power (Intro) is a decent, if not particularly boundary-pushing, way to kick things off. The overclocked techy vocal filter has been done to death before. Antagonist, though? Sick as hell. Especially that overblown bass synth. It's so brash, so in-your-face and attention-seeking, that you can't help but admire these gals. Dark, groovy, sort of a fast-paced club beat with a poppier vocal to appeal to a wider audience. Cleopatra continues with the intense bass-heavy synth hooks, and this time the melody itself takes centre stage. Very cool. Reminds me of Supermassive Black Hole (Muse) and other early-2000s post-alt. "I'm a boss bitch / I'm Cleopatra." Heck yeah (I guess?). K.M.B. excels in its chorus – cool harmonies with a bit of spooky Halloween flare, but the rap section teeters dangerously close to "token rap section" without really adding anything substantive. Good thing the chorus is repeated many times while the rapping can only be heard in one short section. Though Fire & Ice begins unpromisingly ("I wanna strut, I wanna scream / I wanna fuck") it improves a lot with its chorus, bassline, and percussion. The "we're just sad girls" section is also surprisingly great. Closing side 1, Puzzles goes all in with the glitchy, hypermodern production. And it works well. The lyrics come across as a little gross and entitled – thank 2010s pop for that – but sonically it's great. Something about the track A Dark Place For Somewhere Beautiful just does not capture me. At all. I think it's the lack of melody or hooks of any kind. Toolbox is a slight improvement, though the only alluring part is (once again) that dark, wild bass. I'm ambivalent on Choose Your Fighter – the "megalomaniac" part is hard to listen to – but the deciding factor in favour of the song is that vocal distortion over the deadpan title drops. Pretty badass. Enemy, though? That group shouting isn't it, man. And judging by streaming numbers (it has fewer plays than the 54-second intro track), Supernova fans agree. Cool melodies going on in the background but not nearly enough to save the song. I will give a shoutout to Sleep Paralysis for creating a terrifying, doomy way to finish the album experience. And for the album as a whole for not overstaying its welcome. But the choppy quality means my rating is limited to a 3. 3/5 Key tracks: Antagonist, Cleopatra
This wasn't as bad as I initially thought when I saw the album cover. It's pretty cool over-the-top rap-rock actually.
High energy industrial rock. It did personally keep me engaged but not something I'd return to. Some harsh language which isn't something I judge either way but some could
Wow, never heard of them before but enjoyed it despite it being a “British [insert genre here] duo”. 4.2
I thought this was fun, but not at all profound. I don't really understand the inclusion of this in the newest edition of the 1001 except for the desire to have some new albums in there and sell a few more books.
The first of the albums added to the new edition I'm listening to. I expect to not understand why most of them were added as new additions. But I think I figured out why this was added, it was nominated for the Mercury Prize, that is pretty much an auto add for these out of touch tastemakers who maintain this list.
Am I the first one to listen to this? No reviews?? Spice Girls Gone Wild.
I was kind of digging this. They seem to try a bit too hard to appear tough/hard and I'm not a fan of the profanity but I'd listen to this again.
4/5
Not sure I see the vision here Dimery. 5/10
Probably the most current thing I’ve been served. I will wait to review til I have better headphones cause the mix in my daily drivers is way off.
My first of the 2026 additions. Never heard of Nova Twins and was not expecting Nu-metal! I think I have given every other Numetal album a 1 as its a truly terrible genre. The female vocalists certainly elevate this and some of the tracks have okay moments (generally the verses) so it gets a solid 2.
Supernova I’m quite intrigued to hear some of the new entries, and I had never heard of the Nova Twins before. The Guardian reading liberal in me wanted to like this for the r’n’b, punk, pop, hip hop, glam-metal mash up by two women of colour defying expectations of what type of music they should be making But in reality it didn't really float my boat. It seems quite mad to me that people are reaching back for another go at Nu Metal, surely one of the most infecund genres of music, and so often this sounded like fuzzed up takes on the rights free music they use on reality shows like Selling Sunset, with all the I’m a boss bitch, I’m a bad bitch lyrics. That seemed particularly prevalent over the first few songs, but there were a couple of tracks in the middle that stood out. The backing vocals on Puzzles are great and A Dark Place for Somewhere Beautiful combines quiet/loud nicely with a good chorus. Sleep Paralysis is probably the best song, with a more evolved melody alongside the kitchen sink bass and guitar and disco thump of the chorus. A 2 possibly feels a bit harsh, but realistically I’m unlikely to revisit, even if I was glad to have given it a go. 🌠🌠 Playlist submission: Sleep Paralysis
Interesting but a stylistic mash up I didn't particularly enjoy.
Quit beating around the bush and just put an ICP album on here if this is what you want to do. This is a modern nu metal offshoot and reminds me of stale chips and nacho cheese.
Very good pop sensibilities. As tho they took heavy inspiration from existing pop songs and scuffed them up. Feels inspired by Missy Elliott. This isn't for me but I can't argue with this being on this list. Great energy throughout and a nice 30 minute runtime.
