Reviews (page 5 of 8)
yo actually what the fuck this sounds good??? that album cover really scared me that this would be more folk but this is like,,, proto funk or smth love love the instrumentals. we need more music with orchestra in em this is emilycore man i did have a little phase in college and im pretty sure if i found this i would have played it into the ground
I have no idea who this guy is but I really enjoyed some of the funkier, groovier songs on the album. The first song, Inspiration Information, had me excited for the rest of the album. Nice chill laid back vibe. I enjoyed a couple more songs after that, but most were not great. Some of the songs had early electronic vibes to it and you all know how I feel about that. Hemmed and hawed between 2 and 3. Going with 3 because at least it wasn’t the usual stuff we get.
The 70’s are stamped all over this album. It’s not an instrumental album, but is about as close as you can be without actually qualifying. The tracks range all over the place from a slow, sexy vibe all the way to a groovin’, bob-your-head and move song. The drum beats are quick and there is a lot of synthesizer action as well. The vocals are calm and laid back when they happen. Could easily pass for elevator or waiting room music. Any way you frame it, it’s not life changing music.

This was cool
Fricken amazing! 4/5
5.5/10
Smooth, soothing, and overall good stuff but nothing super stood out to me
Gentle funk. Quite nice
Chill grooves carry this album at its strength points. Other bits aren't the best. 5/10
I enjoyed this album. It's a very relaxing listen, but not much was standing out. However, "Sweet Thang" and "Freedom Flight" came along and kind of blew me away. I'm on the edge of increasing my rating, and I very well may in the future- I'm sure I will listen to this one again.
Nice funk with a slight electronic vibe. I like it, but wouldn’t have it on regular rotation. Probably a 3.5.
3.5
Wasn't familiar with the artist, so I was pleasantly surprised by getting some good ol' funk. Good vibes.
entspanntes Album, nicht schlecht lieblingssong: Happy House
"Inspiration Information"'s title track starts the album with a bang. The second and third songs continue the amazing streak. From "Happy House" onwards, "Inspiration Information" starts to get boring. It's also at this point that Otis stops singing, leaving only the accompaniment. So, I would've given this album a higher rating if the second side wasn't a slog. 3 stars for "Inspiration Information".
This is #day500 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… how about some '70s psychedelic soul/funk on a rainy December morning? Well, I don't really mind this time. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day501.
Some cool moments, but quite uneven. 3.5/5
It’s albums like this it makes me enjoy the app. It’s an artist that I would never have thought to listen to and never have heard of. Turns out it was pretty decent and I could see myself listening to this at one point again or other works by the artist
Fun, great 70s psychedelic funk, groovy and smooth stuff. There's enough variety, though no songs stood out. Perhaps I need more listens. 3+ stars.
I like the sound of this album a lot. It was nice listening music while I studied. But because it was background listening and I wasn't paying much attention, I don't know which songs were which. Still, I think I would listen again because it was a cool vibe! Nice mellow background music with the occasional funk to spice things up. Wasn't too memorable but had enough variety to not get bored. Not a fan of the occasional experimental sounds or the 13 minute end song. Fav song: sweet thang - different sound to the rest but the same kind of vibe. Probably 3/5
3/4
Very clever, very smooth. Goes on a bit.
More like "Shrug"-ie Otis, amirite? Nothing wrong with this album but nothing right either. Probably good to fall asleep to.
In this age of hustle and bustle - it was nice to mentally sit in a swinging basket chair and just chill.
I'm not sure what this was. It was pleasant enough but, for me, verged on irritating. The guy's got talent but he used it to create output that doesn't completely agree with me although for 1974 is pretty ahead of its time.
Some yacht rock standards in here. He finds some great grooves. I particularly liked “strawberry letter 23” and “sweet thang”.
Had heard of this artist before but that's about it. Funky guitar grooves and you can hear the influence in lots of 90s electronica and stuff like Jamiroquai. I guess at the time the closest thing was the likes of Sly Stone. It's fine, not massively my sort of thing - very well crafted and nice to have on in the background rather than to listen intently, for me. I wouldn't be surprised to learn there were certain innovations though, as it does sound slightly groundbreaking and interesting for the era.
Not bad
smoooooothh
Decent but not sure I will recall any tracks in the next few days… 2.5/5
Easy listening funk ⭐⭐⭐
Groovy tight album. Its mellow and perfect for the background 3.5/5
Suprising release year with those crisp drum samples! Probably my favorite element. Seems like solid soft rock/funk but not the kinda thing that sticks for me.
Pretty nice
too many instrumentals but strawberry 23 goes hard
don't know what to call it but it was kinda good tho Will I listen to again: 49%
70s vibe. Enjoyable to listen to. Funky, but sometimes it feel like elevator music...still a nice vibe...
Never heard of him, and there's little in the soul, funk, R&B areas that I dig. That being said, this had its groove. Not as impressive as Stevie, but I remained attuned the full album.
Smooth and quite funky. Good for working to but also generally sets a very relaxed vibe.
The instrumentals were good, but I kinda felt like it was too much, as in the guy has a nice voice and I would've loved to hear more vocals than instrumentals. The album is really nice though and might listen to again from time to time.
I enjoyed listening but it is very much background music
It starts out groovy and gets a little lost in the sauce towards the end...I enjoyed the experimentation with electronica and do think Shuggie Otis deserves way more recognition than a cover of Strawberry Letter, but I found myself wanting to listen to other music.
This is a nice, G-rated 70's R&B album. Interesting for a lot of reasons. There are, especially on the amazing "XI-30," flashes of proto-electronica soul. Otis does the Stevie Wonder/Sly Stone/Lenny Kravitz "I played all the instruments" thing (admirably well). You can take a few days and go down the Johnny Otis (Shuggie's dad) rabbit hole, well worth the time if you like 50s and 60s R&B and early soul. A very important figure in the history and probably underrepresented on this list. Not the worst thing I've heard this week. I suppose that's not the highest praise, though.
Not band - a “groovy and funky” kinda vibe. Feel good stuff.
Nice vibes
It started strong, then settled into a nice laidback groove without any particularly memorable songs, then started sounding like he was playing around with the pre-sets on a new keyboard.
pretty good little album.
It was nice but I felt it to be too long
Some sublime grooves and funky tunes, but also a fair few bits which are just too damn smooth and turn into mushy background music. Strawberry Letter an all-timer though.
Smooth and easy listening
First part i enjoyed, then the instrumentals bored me a little, too much elevator music for me.
Kinda nice
A chill if unfocused album with a diversity of sound. Interesting but not too impactful.
Cool listen. Soulful. I bet rappers sampled this and made something great. Little too mellow overall for me though...
I initially thought I'd hate this album, but I actually found it rather pleasant to listen to
Title track is great but I definitely lost interest as it went on.
This record is almost 4 star for me. But despite of couple great songs from the start others instrumental tracks don't make much energy to me. They are good, but it sounds more like audiowallpaper. Besides I can reclaim futuristic and kindly soft sound of this record.
This was ok, quite funky and soulful, and I particularly like the bass playing. Shuggie sounds like a bit of an unappreciated song-writer although I'm not sure his voice is really strong enough to carry this into 4+* territory for me. Nice but not that memorable
Nice
I was hype for this album because I’ve heard other stuff I really love from Ahuggie Otis. Unfortunately this album never really soars. It’s fine, but I’ve heard much more exceptional soul
Easy to listen to soul/jazz. It's decent.
Enjoyed this album more than I thought I would.
Chilled out album, very nice easy listening. A few standout songs with a lot of mellow points on what is quite a long album.
Seems like the last 4 tracks are bonus tracks that weren't on the original album This would be a 2 if not for Strawberry Letter.
This was fairly nice and chill, sounded fine. I just didn’t think it was anything too special and I kind of zoned out of it after a while.
Never heard of this artist but really enjoyed the slightly Jamiroquai like first side. Then all the instrumentals let the album down.
A good album, I liked Island Letter and Happy House the most.
Kannte ich vorher nicht. Guter Tipp
Was a good record.
Funky. I enjoyed this as background but can't say it really grabbed me.
3/5. A groovy and funky album that feels like a step into funk and disco. Clearly has roots in R&B band rock but falls into Stevie Wonder's ball house more than anything. It's a culmination of albums that came before, short and sweet while really giving a complete wrap up of funkiness, smooth and subtle. As far as something I'm listening to on repeat, most likely not but it's not bad. Best Song: Inspiration Information, Aht Uh Mi Hed, Not Available
Rock based R&B. Shuggie’s voice reminds me of Daryl Hall - high, smooth, emotive. Musically this has a Hall and Oates vibe too - same genre. Enjoyable listen. Notable tracks include Inspiration Information, Island Letter, Sparkle City, Aht Uh Mi Hed, Rainy Day, Pling!
Not sure
Its pretty funky and I had a perfectly pleasant time listening, but I did find myself losing interest at times.
Fine, basically. I was probably hoping for slightly more than this than I got. It was very soft and mellow, which is nice but not ever going to really grab you, and it was sort of over before it started.
A lovely album. It has a very narrow range, but it is excellent at what it does.
Pretty minimal, it's not that much in tune with my taste but there is something nice and calming in the backgroundy-feeling sound it takes on
This sounds exactly like what I'd expect music by someone named Shuggie Otis would sound like. Smooth, jazzy, elevator grooves. There are far too many albums on this list though, and just because a record had 1 hit on it does not mean the whole album is good.
Too slow and smooth for my vibes today
Vibey but can be a little boring. The trio of Strawberry Letter 23, Sweet Thang, and Ice Cream Daydream is definitely the highlight.
Un descubrmiento para mí. Muy agradable y todavía escuchable
This is a really good rainy day album to chill out and smoke some weed and listen to. Not something I'd listen to a lot, but just for those occasions, sure. 3/5
Pretty impressive that Shuggie played almost every instrument on this album. I'm not really into this type of soul, but I can appreciate the musicianship and songwriting here. Some of these songs take unexpected, sometimes psychedelic turns, which makes for an interesting and enjoyable listen throughout. Overall, very enjoyable soulful album that feels like it's verging on experimental at times.
Cool album. Enjoyed the instrumental portion a bit more than the beginning bit
Great example of an album I probably would have never found without this list, despite being familiar with 2 of the tunes. It's a cool, relaxing album, but there are times where you wish the songs would go somewhere and they just, kind of, peter out into a tease of nothingness. It's not a bad album, it's actually quite good, just could use a little more of something.
not super memorable but a smooth listen. 3
I knew "Strawberry Letter 23" and I think the title track "Inspiration Information" was familiar. It's a mix of R&B, funk, psychedelic, etc. And most of it is pleasant to listen to. A few tracks get a bit strange (XL-30) or overly jammy (Freedom Flight).
Kinda cool neo soul.
not surprising, a little underproducted
The first half of the album was 100x better than the last half. Some of those instruments were just pointless
This was pretty fun. Easy listening. I realized why the name Shuggie Otis was familiar once I reached "Strawberry Letter 23". It's groovy, and exactly the kind of music I'd expect to hear during a foot/car chase of a 70s innercity cop show.
Album 889 of 1089 Shuggie Otis -Inspiration Information (1974) Rating : 3.5 / 5 I really enjoyed this one. The laid-back vibe carried through the whole record, and I especially loved the guitar work - tasteful, smooth, and always adding something interesting. I wasn’t familiar with Shuggie Otis before this project, but I’m glad I am now. This one’s definitely going on my list of albums to come back to again. A fine listen that blends soul, funk, and groove into something unique and easy to enjoy.
I enjoyed it, just don't see myself coming back to it.
Some really strong bits to this. The opening track is a beauty and this feels like a formative record for rnb and soul. I enjoyed the layer part of the album where they gave space and time to the melody to open it up and it gave a jazzier feel. I've read about the special place a male falsetto has in black culture but it wasnt my favourite.
Cool vibe
3.
This was fun. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
3.33
Really dug the first track but the rest of the album was just meh. I liked the R&B/soul/funky/jazzy fusion sounds that were going on, but could have been executed a bit better. Got better towards the ends with the more chill, instrumental tracks, however.
Definitely a funky album. Not sure when I would ever listen to this, everything sounded nice though. I guess it's just not my tempo.
Kultni album kojeg ja baš nisam razumio nikad
This is if funk, jazz, and elevator music all had a baby. It’s fun at parts and sometimes leans more towards background music. Middle of the road for me.
It was in interesting listen. Not really my genre but it was fine but probably won’t listen to it again.
I enjoyed Shuggie Otis' multi-instrumental performances across a huge array of instruments. Seriously, I find this music of his far more interesting than Todd Rundgren's. It is clear that Otis has extremely great chops. Where the problem lies is in the vocal performance and the mixing of the vocals. A stronger vocal performance by either Otis himself, or bringing in a vocal performer that was capable of doing so, could have elevated good songs to great songs. I would have loved this album if there were no vocals, rather than the timid vocals it does possess. I cannot help but wonder if the mixed down vocals were a choice, or a necessity. Also, Prince should have sent royalties to Shuggie Otis as a thank you for laying the foundation for the work that Prince will do in the late 70s and early 80s.
A real find. Had never heard of the album or artist but really enjoyed it.
Ok album. 3 stars.
Interesting and pleasant. 3 *
This is easy to sit back and just groove with. I could see this being a great album to put on in the background with friends and a joint.
Good solid album.
quite enjoyed this, XL30 and especially the bass line on Not Available jumped out, not such a fan of the songs with vocals as they did not tend to reach the same levels as some of the instrument work
2.7 1x
Good vibes, but mostly forgettable. Impressive that he records this all himself. Will unlikely return to this as it’s not groundbreaking, but good for background mood building
Cool new discovery.
Shuggie Otis produced & pretty much played all instruments on Inspiration Information. He was also one of the 1st musicians to use analog drum machines. Pitchfork described the album as "smooth, organ-driven California funk, quasi-new age psychedelia, loungey jazz instrumentals, [and] string interludes—all propelled by the same kind of analog drum machine.” That fits perfectly. It was the last album for a contract with Electra Records, & they dropped Otis after it went nowhere commercially.. You can understand why after listening. The world probably wasn’t ready for Otis’s take on his style of r&b. The album is weird, for what you expect, with the last 4 songs being short instrumentals. The album probably inspired artists to push boundaries using new technology. The first 5 songs are really good with the title track, Island Letter & Sparkle City being my favorites. Not sure the album will enter my rotation, but a few songs will. Must listen for R&B nerds.
3.4 Cool Album, My initial thought after the first couple of tracks was the songs would fit in well in a movie soundtrack. Then we get to Strawberry letter 23 from Jackie Brown and my favorite use of song (I know its not Shuggies version) in a movie (and my top Tarantino flick). Will check out more of the catalog.
Pretty good, some nice funk to it
It's good but not great
With some albums, you can really dive into all the details and nuances that make them great, and analyse them in excruciating detail to see everything going on under the surface that makes it amazing. But in the case of this album, it's plain and simple, just a solid record. There isn't really a lot to do a deep dive into, it's just good, well perfomed music.
Un peu boring mais j'aime bien
Some good songs. Unfinished
Nice background music
A very cool record. I think some of the songs went on a little too long showing off the instrumentation but overall I enjoyed this. Favorite: Inspiration Information Would I listen to it again: Yes
Positive vibes and great funk. I quite enjoyed this one
Chill, funky album. Kinda wish it was longer
Some solid tracks, the instrumentals not as interesting and could have been cut for better time.
Not bad
Nice dry 70s production but not many hooks
Good easy listening r&b
3/5
I liked the title track. The rest dragged on a bit.
Dont get me wrong, Suggie is cool and this is nice. But of all the millions of albums that have been released since the dawn of recorded music someone decided THIS is one of a thousand you need to hear before you die. Spoiler alert, its not.
It’s not bad but it all sounds the same. Still cool to listen to.
Soooo 70s. Cool funk. Honestly a little boring for me at this point, though.
#627. Acceptable-tier easy listening guitar r&b. 3/5: fine
Some funky grooves, for sure, but nothing too memorable.
Enjoyable. Nothing that rocked my world though.
I never heard of Shuggie until now, so looking into him it turns out he is Johnny Otis’ son. Also he wrote Strawberry Letter 23. I listened to the original release which is just 31 minutes. I would describe this music as mellow funk. Nothing offensive here, kind of like good background music.
Never heard of this guy, but he is apparently an R&B nepo baby (not that there's anything wrong with that). Props to him for playing so many instruments. A perfectly serviceable album, but not very interesting to me. A bit sleepy at points. The Wilco of the 70s. The second half instrumentals felt very hold-music-esque (though perhaps the title 'Not Available' influenced that perception).
A fun one to put on. Enjoyed the whole thing but no one song grabbed me.
Like not love. Good not great. 3.2
Funky, but also a little dull.
Good vibes, this was just so long.
Funky sometimes. Boring sometimes.
Strawberry letter so good
78% Best: Inspiration Information; Island Letter; Sparkle City; Not Available Must-Hear? The album opens up strongly, flat lines in the middle, and picks back up again for the last two tracks. I would like to give it 4 stars and a must-hear if only the mid-section was better. A maybe is warranted.
Never heard of Shuggie, but must say this is a pretty good album. It has a mix of some stronger and some weaker songs. Especially the instrumental ones were a bit of a drag at times. Overall I found it funky and fun to listen to. I think if I gave it more time it could grow on me, but for now it feels like a quite even and good record, that unfortunately didn't really have those highs for me to warrant a higher rating than strong 3.
Highs and lows on this album. Off to an ok start if you are into some soul music. The album then took a nosedive with the more keyboard heavy tracks and instrumental tracks like” XL-30” and “Pling!”. After rain there is sunshine and after nearly giving up on the record, in comes the excellent “Strawberry letter 23”. Not a clue where I’ve heard that track before but, man, is it a good song. Strawberry letter really saved this album, settling for a 3 star.
Feels somewhat unfocused but the tunes are super chill and funky
Like others have said - it's like a ball rolling up the hill, but just doesn't quite make it. Bland when all is said and done.
The tunes were pretty tasty soul/funk but the sound quality, at least to me, left a lot to be desired.
I am not a kind of guy who can enjoy R&B veering into Prince/Michael Jackson territory. other aspects sometimes kinda cool. something a bit hip hop instrumental about it. rounding up to 3.
3.0 - Ok
Easy casual listening that I enjoyed but wouldn’t go out of my way for.
A nice chill weekend listen, with lots to like. A bit too much of a veer into easy listening at times, and that lightweight disposability is why it isn't getting marked higher. But there's some cool stuff on here too. 3.5☆
This was solid overall, but the quality from song to song varies wildly. One song has an infectious groove and great hook, while the next is a long and boring instrumental.
Lyder alt sammen virkelig godt men også lidt rodet
erste song scho seeehr cool. ersch de sohn vom jöhnner ötis jo nepotime aber sehr tasty sehr cooli instrumentierig. island letter chli seeeicht. aber super cutie chords. sparkle city eeewigs biser singt findi aber suuuper geil. lieb die troche gitarre. ok die zwei hälfti isch jo insaaaane langwilig. aso pling bsunders jetz huiii not available au cute aber najaaa? hey sorry es zwei emfall glaub. scho cool am afang und drum machine interessant so früeh aber böh. okay bi chli meh überlegge es enttüschts 3
Wow, what a rollercoaster. Honestly I went from yay to meh so many times listening to this. In terms of sheer quantity of creation, this is impressive, and it makes me feel generous. So I'm going to give Shuggie three stars.
Funk-leaning elevator music grooves
Jazzy soul, a little bit waiting room vibe, but nice, vibes and unexpected sounds. Wish there was more vocals.
3
3 sterne
2.5 stars. It was alright. Funky but nothing special
Favorite track: strawberry letter 23. Overall score: 6.7/10
Shuggie Otis, never heard of him and somehow not my thing, but not bad either. I'll definitely listen to the album "Inspiration Information" again. Relaxed funky. Groovy psychedelic. 3 stars, because after 3 or 4 songs it gets a bit boring.
mid 3
Pre-listening thoughts: idk who shuggie Otis is but I saw strawberry letter 23 on here and the Brothers Johnson version of that song goes hard so let’s see if the og is any good Post/during listening thoughts: well it was great music to put on in the background at work. Never too demanding of your attention. Just sort of there to build the atmosphere. It’s okay, I don’t think I’d revisit this tho. 5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Sparkle City, Strawberry Letter 23 (still prefer the cover) Least fav tracks: Aht Uh Mi Head
Upscale elevator music
Fun vibe, but probably not something I’d come back to.
note to self: the albums ends on “not available” as the spotify version is the reissue from 2001 that has bonus tracks from his other albums included. this is really nice and laid back mixed with nice funky sounds! absolutely love the guitar work. the vocal walk down at 1:48 in the first track is my fave thing on the whole album. it is GORGEOUS!!!! this title track is my favourite of the album for sure. i am a bit torn whether i feel this is a high 3 or a low 4 because it does kind of drop off a bit too much for me. even just the second track being such a mood shift from the hype first track is something i struggle with. i listened to the extra 4 bonus tracks and yeah i get why people think it’s too long with the bonus tracks. the original release is a perfect length at 33 something minutes.
Went a little bit too far into the easy listening side but there's still some pretty good funk here. Solid playing. Might listen again in the future.
Blues based music is not my thing and this didn’t change my mind. Strawberry Letter 23 is a classic but not on this album. He did play all the instruments which is notable achievement.
It was so close but it just didn’t quite get there for me.
I didn’t mind this on in the background, but nothing really jumped out at me.
Great background music
GREAT vibes throughout this album. The song quality is very up and down to me though. The highs are really high so I would choose my favorites and just add those to a playlist rather than listening to the entire album again.
Yo groovy really liked this
gained momentum and then lost it unfortunately
3.5 jazzy soulful funk. Really liked his voice
The title track is really catchy but the rest of the album is just ok. Can't really think of anything that was particularly interesting in the rest of the album mainly just background music. 6/10 Favourite: Inspiration Information Least Favourite: XL-30
This album starts off strong with some of the vocal songs, but peters out into some unremarkable instrumentals.
first song absolutely slaps. Had high hopes off of that but wasnt a huge fan of the instrumental turn the album took
Favorite Track: Inspiration Information
decent
Easy listening. Not great, not bad.
Ein R&B Klassiker würde ich sagen
I enjoyed it as a whole album and experience, though no particular songs jumped out at me as stars. But it was fun and groovy and boppy.
Guy's jamming
≠ the Beatles Some of this is really interesting and great but a lot of this is elevator music.
Good album. Dig the funky guitar work.
Fun basslines, but wasn't too interesting otherwise for me.
I actually liked this better than Marvin Gaye. Just because the instrumentals were more interesting. Nice album for a long drive but did get repetitive ultimately
Pleasant.
Was ok
inspiration information- 6 island letter- 5 sparkle city- 6 aht uh mi hed- 5 happy house- 5 rainy day- 6 xl 30- 5 or 6 pling- 5 not available- 5
ok? carino ma un po' ripetitivo
Not unfamiliar with Shuggie Otis, I was hyped to see this album come across the transom. He has that smooth funk sound that is infectious and listenable. Just a nice groove and great delivery. I'd love to hear this album in the hands of an incredible mixer for a remix/remaster but all you need to really do is turn it up.
Wasn’t really in the mood for this - we’ll call it 3 and part ways forever
This was okay. Pretty mellow and varied, but not always varied enough to really hold my attention.
This was fine but just not really my thing. Oh well. 2.5/5
I had never heard of Shuggie Otis before, and didn’t know what to expect. All in all, I found this album easy to listen to and enjoyable; this one is a 3 for me. Glad to be exposed to it, but didn’t like it so much that I will need to hear it again.
I liked the funk and the jazziness. This was a pleasant and easy listen.
Expected more tbh
Disc 1: 6.5 Disc 2: 7 Overall: 6.5 Favorite Tracks: *Wings of Love*, Give Me A Chance, Walkin’ Down the Country Least Favorite Tracks: Black Belt Sheriff, Castle Top Jam, Happy House
ok, lil funk
This is a funk, soul and early R&B album rolled into one, with a lot of different sounds coming through here. I enjoyed it, it was good smooth listening that didn't become too tedious to listen to, like some albums like this can tend to do. Though, it did have a tendency to drag in places, it definitely could have been shorter, maybe shaved off a song or two. It's good, soothing background music if nothing else, sounding quite loungy at times, almost jazz inspired. I don't know if I would intentionally listen to it again, as it didn't do an awful lot for me but I would put it on whilst doing something in the background, I.e cooking. It's good Sunday morning music, which I quite like.
I enjoyed this but think it’s a grower. A few more listens and I could see myself bumping it up a star.
Pleasant and groovy
Feels like they missed their calling and shoulda been jazz fusion band.
I'm pretty sure I've never heard anything from this album before, or for that matter anything by Shuggie Otis, aside from perhaps his work with his father, but I'm pretty sure I haven't heard much by Johnny Otis either. And I appreciated that the album started off strong with the title track "Inspiration information", but disappointed that it kind of dissipated quickly for me after that. I was impressed to read that Shuggie Otis played most of the instruments on the album, and got into (analog) drum machines so early on, and I was kind of hoping this album might have an undiscovered Stevie Wonder or Prince vibe. But I think there's a reason why this album never made waves. I wish it was otherwise, but in many ways this is very much the definition of the product of a nepo baby, and I'm not really sure why this album is included in this collection, frankly.
This was fine but neither inspiring nor informative. Maybe I missed something somewhere.
There were some decent funky jams on this one, but not enough to push it to a 4 like everyone else. Still a solid 3.
Pas nul, mais pas fou non plus. Papa Otis, c'était mieux.
Nice funky bluesy jazz album
Pretty cool stuff. I liked how low-key it was. Just simple vibes. For better or worse, it all washed over me pleasantly, but didn't leave much of an impression.
snoturt djassskotið sálarglamur. 3,5.
I enjoyed this album. It may not be mind-blowing in any sense but it is a solid funky jazz record and I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up and play it again. I had only heard a couple song from Shuggie Otis but liked what I heard so it was nice to see this pop up today. This is another album that falls in the category of 'play it in the background while doing other things' and it would make a perfect soundtrack for a Saturday morning. 3.5/5 but going to round down because it's just a little to generic funk to round up.
Dude's chilling, turning soulful low-key underdevelopment hip. Hey, I got a good idea: start with a snippet and then start jamming making sure we don't wake anybody on this island up!! And keep that up for the rest of the album. The definition of cool.
Didn’t really feel in the mood for this. Made no impression until maybe the last track. Totally inoffensive but inconsequential. In reality a 2.5 but he’s done nothing wrong!
This was a nice inclusion, though I can't claim to have gotten over-excited about it. The sound quality, certainly via Spotify, was not the best, so that didn't help matters. As I listen to "Freedom Flight" (the album that preceded this one) while I write this, I think that would have been my choice (had I been consulted). That album includes "Strawberry Letter 23," made famous by The Brothers Johnson, and that revelation is worth the price of admission on its own. Not to mention he wasn't even 18 when that was released in 1971. (BTW, I didn't know all this, sourced from AllMusic.com, and that site says he was 15 when he wrote the material. It also mentions that Shuggie played most all the instruments on that recording on his own. Interesting that the album cover hearkens to Prince's 1979 release, called "Prince". I suspect Shuggie was on Prince's radar.) Anyway, I liked this record, didn't quite fall in love. It's a 3.5, but I'm keeping this on the runway. Listen to his version of "Strawberry Letter 23," just to experience that if you haven't already. It's always been a favorite song of mine, and I had never heard Shuggie's version before this!
it started out cool. maybe not as interesting groove-wise as Sly & the Family Stone's Fresh or as compelling compositionally as Bill Withers, but it's a chill album. but it kind of died out at the end for me to get 4 stars.
Good stuff, good one to come back to
Oh yah shuggie my Otis please inspire my Otis and let it inform all over you
I am not totally on board with the number of instrumentals here. Tracks 7-9 are all instrumental and aren't unpleasant, yet they are the last 3 songs on the original album. Fortunately, I listened to the expanded edition so I heard four songs after those three. How was Strawberry Letter 23 not on this album? It's a great song. Shuggie Otis is a very talented artist, that much is obvious. It bothers me out of the last four "bonus" tracks, I think all Freedom Flight should have been on the original album. Freedom Flight is nice to listen to once but it's a 12-minute instrumental and it gave me bad flashbacks to when I heard the The Crusaders "Street Life" album. Overall, a good listen and I would revisit individual tracks but not the entire album.
Pistas destacadas: Inspiration/Information Sparkle City Aht Uh Mi Hed Sweet Thang Freedom Flight
groovy album. Real solid start to end.
Enjoyable but somehow still missing something.
Felt like this had so much potential but just didn't deliver.
Loved The Brothers Johnson' cover of Strawberry Letter 23 since I was a kid. This album is quite beautiful.
I liked the first few songs but the instrumental tracks aren't really for me. I wish this record was more like what I imagined it was going to be! 3 overall
I think this is a jam band? Seems well done but not really my cup of tea.
It was good
Groovy, but wish the songs had more "meat on the bone", for lack of a better term.
Shuggie Otis is one of those names I recognize and think I’d like their music a lot but just never got around to listening to, so I was very excited to give this album a listen. From the first track I really wanted to love this album. There is a lot to love about- the composition is complex and layered but doesn’t feel crowded or too busy. It’s silky smooth and sexy. Unfortunately, it has a certain quality that makes it easy to tune out or to fall into the mental lane of background music at times. I do wish it commanded my attention a bit more. The title track and “XL-30” were my favorites. An interesting thing about this album: usually when you listen to a mostly or totally instrumental album from a solo artist, it’s clear what instrument that artist plays. I tried to figure this out while listening to “Inspiration Information” and still had no clue by the end. After reading a bit about the album, I learned that Shuggie played almost all of the instrumental track as well as produced the album himself. Very impressive. This album is also an early use case of analog drum machines and garnered the respect of Sly Stone. Cool. Overall this is a pleasant and at times interesting album but not quite what I hoped it would be. 7/10 ⭐️
This is groovy, smooth, and very chill. And it's so impressive that he played most of the instruments and experimented with the analog drum machines. But nothing really grabbed my attention and held it. I can understand why it's on the list, but it's not my favorite.
Chill, funk, lounge album. Strawberry letter 23 instant ear worm.
I'd never heard of Shuggie Otis before but as soon as Strawberry Letter 23 hit I got a wave of recognition. I listened to the deluxe version (hence hearing that track) and didn't think anything on the original album met the deluxe tracks in quality which is interesting, but I loved this. Great workflow music.
Crispy production Most pleasantly poppy art While keeping it weird
Mostly groovy, mellow background noise. Would be great for drowning out your thoughts while working on something unpleasant. Or for a nice drive. Very melodic and groovy
Ahh. Old Shuggie, Shugster. The Shugmeister General as well always called him. It’s nice to reminisce! I remember when me and Len first met him. We fell in love with his personality in a second but we couldn’t understand his music. We kept saying, ‘Shuggie, come on man! You’re so talented. Let’s get you away from making hotel lounge bar music and let’s make some catchy, funky tunes’. It’s nice to see moments of where he listened to us on this but otherwise it’s just same old Shuggie. You have to respect that in a way. We can’t all be Houmous & Chutney! 2.8
On Amazon Music, this album is paired with "Wings of Love," so I listened to both. This is pretty good. I like the funky 70s vibe. Shuggie also played with Frank Zappa, so that's cool. I am a big fan of Frank. I give this 3 stars, but I will listen to it again in the future, and the rating might change. For the original release, I would say "Sparkle City" is my favorite track. When you add the extra tracks the standouts are: "Miss Pretty" and "Magic".
Not bad honestly. Groovy and easy listening
A curiously funky album. Easy to listen to.
There's a lot of cool stuff going on in this album, but a lot of it feels just a little low effort. Strawberry Letter 23 is an awesome song and you know that he's got that in him, but so much of this album feels like he's just recording him fucking around with his band rather than a formal song. Really love the sound, don't love the effort.

Pretty decent soul/funk album. Rainy day is a pretty song. Aht uh Mi Hed is cool too.
Good and varied music.
Lemppari: Strawberry Letter 23 Vähiten lemppari: Not Available
Soulful and a bit funky, it is a record you could put on with friends over while having drinks and a conversation and it compliment it. I really mean that in a good way. Stand out tracks: - Inspiration Information - Sparkle City - Rainy day - Strawberry letter 23 - Sweet Thang
Pretty solid....
Was about to say: not bad, but not groovy enough - department store browsing music. But then, from Strawberry Letter 23 (great track) onwards, things improved - hoorah! The rest of the album is pretty cool - I enjoyed the vibe.
Relaxing, funky, easy listening, some nice guitar in places. Goes on for a bit too long, would benefit from having some of the noodley tracks in the middle of the album cut. Strawberry Letter 23 was the standout track for me, liked that a lot. Great name too 🍓✉️ 2️⃣3️⃣
decent funk sound, consistent with the era.
I listened to a double album. I think the first disc was Inspiration Information anx it was 2-3 stars. The second was Wings of Love and it was darn good, 3-4 stars. So, going with 3.
Shuggie Otis is a cool name, I’ve also never heard of him before this. This is fine. Perfectly middle of the road
Love the name. Loved the sound for the first 40 minutes. Funk-lite, would you call it? Idk, but it was pretttty smooth. (ntm.)
This was ok, but I didn't love it.
02/10/24 Average.
This is like elevator music if elevator music was groovier.
Surprisingly enjoyable. Not sure why it's a must listen but I did find it relaxing. An album that could be played in the background that you don't necessarily need to listen note for note what is going on to find some entertaining value from it.
This is some smooth ass shit for sure
Very good unknown album for all smooth/groove lovers.
Smooth soul/ jazz. Mellow vibe.

Was OK. Would have liked more social commentary. Good musicians, voice nothing special.
Shuggie Otis suffers a fate more common than I had realized before I began this music critic jouney: At the wedding of life you have the head table, than the closer ones, slowly moving towards the back of the venue. Now! Nobody is an enemy, he is a good musician, entertaining, professional, no problem. He IS at the wedding. The trouble is that he is somewhere in the middle tables and gets a bit lost in the crowd. It seems a lot of bands, even ones I have always liked, suffer this fate. Yet they do have superfans and respect anyhow, and it gives an appreciation for how hard it really is to rise to the top in the industry.
This was funky and delightful! I read that this was one of the first albums to make heavy use of analogue drum machines. I love when people find ways to use electronics but their music still feels so soulful and human. The vocals were soft and sweet. They made me think of something my vocal coach Ken Tamplin is always saying - if you build up a strong chest voice, you can go soft or heavy and everything in between. But if you only develop your soft stuff and your head voice, that’s all you’ll have. So it’s ok that the vocals here felt limited to the softest crooning because that definitely served the songs, but it would have been great if they could have wailed a little at some point.
Quite funky in parts
What a good album - really chilled.
Really quite pleasant
This is okay, a portion of it sounds like mediocre background music though.
Some nice funky tracks
Side one was nice and I enjoyed the laid back energy, but side two was instrumental and it made the album feel incomplete. The lyrics were great, his singing was great, the instrumentation on the second half wasn’t necessarily good enough to survive on its own, so what’s the fuckin deal? I would have really like this whole thing, but alas, I must be content with liking half. 3/5
Expected a few more bangers, but still was a cool listen. I’ll go back to it and see if it grows on me more.
Even after reading the Wikipedia entry, I'm struggling to understand why this album is on the list. There's nothing wrong with it, it's fine, enjoyable even but it doesn't seem essential.
groovy and pleasant, though overall it falls a bit flat. some songs get off to a promising start, but cannot maintain the momentum. others are dull from start to finish. still, there are some cool instrumental moments (e.g. the beginning of Sweet Thang) that keep this album from being a flop
aw man they were definitely on drugs
Nice groove - I'd call it light funk. Nice easy listening for dinner music. Not a rotation album, but nice.
Never heard of him before, it was alright. Chill soul vibes.
Smooth and jazzy
I found this kind of boring and wasn't a fan of the vocals. The funkier songs were better but this will end up being an album I completely forget about in a couple days.
This album makes you feel like you’ve shot straight back to the early 70’s disco / motown / hip hop scene. The music gets a little fairground from track 7, but it starts strong.
Smooth R&B.not bad. Digged the title track
3.5/5
Not bad!
This is really great. I've always been a big fan of Strawberry Letter 23, but never dove into the rest of Shuggie's stuff. This is a 3.5, but going lower as it seems like he padded a bit with short songs to finish a record contract. My guess is the previous albums are more substantial.
Pleasant, some great guitar and bass, but nothing super memorable.
I’m giving it through with the combination of both albums.
