It's kinda my worst nightmare. It either gave me a headache last night or made my headache worse. The singing is whiney and bad, the instruments are uninteresting and bad. There's some screaming here too. The thing I hate too is that it doesn't feel like it's bad to prove a point or for artistic reasons, it just seems bad - like a band that would lose in the first round of the battle of the bands. They sound like a lot of the punk bands that I don't like because I hate their singers.

This album was neat, but I feel like it suffers a bit to comparisons from other indie bands. I like what Pavement was doing with this era a lot more. Art has to be judged on its own, and this album certainly has some things to recommend it. It's just hard when this reminds me so much of other bands whose work I enjoy more than this 3/5

Twee redelijk normale nummers om de luisteraar op het verkeerde been te zetten. En dan begint de pret. Expres lekker vals zingen en wat andere oorpijnigingen erdoor heen. Eens kijken hoe lang iedereen het volhoudt. En dan doen andere(n) (lijstsamenstellers) of het geweldig is, om maar te laten zien dat ze een bijzondere smaak hebben. Ja, dag. Zowel de makers als de inzenders zijn af.

Huismerk Dinosaur Jr en huismerk Pixies bij elkaar in een matige mix. Er zijn echt zoveel betere gitaarbandjes en dan stoppen ze dit in een 1001-lijst. Dit zit in principe in de hoek waar ik graag veel van hoor, maar ik ken deze band niet. En terecht. Want er waren er 1001 beter. Een kleine 3 voor de moeite.

Some of this is really good, but some of it is just noise.

Woah. This is not good. These songs are just a mess of weird. And not in a good way.

This group was popular when I was young, but I never really caught on. Listening to it, now, I'm even less impressed. It sounds like college kids trying to be rebellious or moody or rock. Not very genuine nor melodic.

It's ok. Some songs felt more like demos. Maybe It's just the style. I don't think i will remember anything about this album. But also it's kinda like the music i listen to :D

I really dig this. It's like touching on all these different alternative sounds from the '80s and '90s: Dinosaur Jr., Guided By Voices, Failure, Slint, Meat Puppets...

American indie rock band. Du gros riff accrocheur, le sonore est pas mal bon, même si le chanteur c'est pas mon pref du tout. J'aime la variété des chansons (aka pas comme les ramones). Un 4 pour la découverte et l'originalité, quoiqu'il se fait bien mieux.

I've never heard of them before, but now I know. Really not a fan. It's chaotic and random at times. There was some resemblance of The Violent Femmes, but overall I'll pass.

This was a pleasant surprise. There's no one track that stands out, unfortunately, but the album as a whole works.

Initial impression, the band name reminds me of trig function shit (sohcahtoa). Bad start. First few tracks made me want to punch my own ticket. Abysmal start. It got better (it was hard to get worse) but not by much.

Obviously influential as hell

Where to begin. It’s a chaotic album. It’s an interesting blend of lofi, Nirvana, and darkish 80s post punk. Makes sense given that they share band members with Dinosaur Jr. The most fascinating track is Fantastic Disaster where every instrument (including vocals) seems to play on its own key. Maybe the instruments are even out of tune. At least you can save time playing these kind of songs live because you don’t need to tune? But on the acoustic or stripped back numbers you can feel an In Utero vibe. Just the right level of lofi. So clearly these guys know how to play. So I give it a 2/5 for effort. I feel like it’s uncool to like bands like this but I honestly feel no emotional connection.

It's clear that the band tried to create a garage rock vibe, but in some instances, it felt like they ended up with "garbage" instead. While their grunge and indie influences shine through, there are moments when the lo-fi experimentation pushes the boundaries a bit too far, rendering some songs nearly inaudible. It's a shame because there are undoubtedly some hidden gems that echo Nirvana or Pavement within the album that could have shone brighter with a cleaner production. A big 1 for the inaudibles ones.

This album was so varied - It started with songs that were fairly ambient and chill, had a couple of interesting ones, and then played a couple of garbage songs that were v abrasive. I wouldn't listen to it through again, but there were a couple of songs in here that were alright.

Super weak 90's alternative

I had only heard Brand New Love (as well as several covers of it) before today. That song is not in this album,but boy do I wish that it was. I really expected this to be better. It's cool that they influenced a lot of cool bands and maybe they have some other good songs and albums elsewhere but this fell flat for me.

My first impression was that this album is a more lethargic version of Coldplay, and who needs that? But I've listened to enough of the 1001 to trust the process, so that's what I did. And the album turned out to be pretty good, especially the tracks that had some bounce and pace.

1st September 2023 Caught up over the weekend - Cox and Georgia on Saturday in Stroud market and Tess and Ollie on Sunday with a bit of Barnett’s in Cheltenham. Grungy indie with screaming vocals, Jen really not a fan.

One of the most schizophrenic albums I’ve ever heard. Starts out normal, then all of a sudden gets weird, and then very weird, and then back to normal again, followed by more weirdness. I kind of liked it!

I liked about 1/3 of the songs, was neutral on 1/3, and really disliked the last 1/3. Just didn't care for the ones that were more discordant and immature sounding. Overall not bad but probably wouldn't listen to again. 3 stars.

Lou Barlow being in Dinosaur Jr. really makes sense here. Well-crafted, grungy pop songs that turn into hippie freakout music really quickly. Can be a little schizo with three separate writers each creating separate tracks. Favorite tracks: "Think", "Elixir Is Zog", "Soul And Fire"

Album 100 of 1001 Sebadoh - Bubble and Scrape Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Homemade Some grunge...I'd say some punk aspects, as well. It certainly has its moments, but was careful not to give us too many of them. I can see possibilities.

Could not get into it at all. It sounded bad at times, but I think it was done ironically. Not that it changes much for me, because it still sounds bad even if done ironically.

This album has songs created by each of the 3 musicians which makes for something truly chaotic. It sounds shitty and messy, so I love it.

Very disjointed listen. You can tell this is three artists with three distinct styles and it just never flows from one track to the next.

This is similar to a lot of the indie rock we’ve had on the list, but it’s good nonetheless. ‘Soul and Fire’ is an especially good song. I liked it, but it’s kind of weird it made the list.

Oddly enough, I was more team Sebadoh than team Dinosaur Jr. during the "alternative" nineties (Sebadoh's Lou Barlow played bass and sang in Dinosaur Jr. before he was fired from the band). Jay Mascis's songs had too many guitar solos for my snobbish tastes at the time, even if I now recognize Dinosaur Jr.' importance, especially since Barlow reintegrated the band. But to be honest, I've always prefered Sebadoh's organized chaos, emphasizing fully democratic values within the band. And because the music was good too, as strange as those albums by the American band were... There were indeed three songwriters in Sebadoh at the time of *Bubble And Scrape*, and one third of said tracklist was devoted to each songwriter. And this, even if everyone (the audience, the critics, the band itself) knew the best tunesmith was Lou Barlow among those three, thanks to a rare compositional talent that helped him convey deeply melancholic feelings in his own songs. Up to that album, the only melodies really worthy of interest are his, and there are enough of them in it to sell the whole deal. Besides, the songs those melodies are part of are among the most magnificient songs Barlow ever penned in his career: "Soul And Fire", " Two Years Two Days", "Cliche", "Homemade", " Forced Love"... Plus there is the livelier " Sacred Attention", where Barlow mixes his romantic sadcore leanings with an apocalyptic wall of lo-fi guitars. Not to mention "Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)", an absolute tearjerker right before the end, where his hushed pleading voice, Seana Carmody's delicate backing vocals, and three simple chords on an acoustic guitar are enough to make you cry. "Let tomorrow be / I can't be so impatient / Pushing every answer / When there isn't any question". Wow. Rarely have songs about a couple in crisis have felt so lived-in. All of that doesn't mean that the two other band members can't bring their own (sour) cream on the melancholic cake. Jason Loewenstein still has to hone his own heavier and grungier-via-hardcore-punk skills at that point, it's true. That said, "Sister" is a great cut, and Jason even visits Lou's angsty and emotional turf with a certain flair on "Happily Divided". As for Eric Gaffney, his dissonant and experimental noisy ventures can admittedly be a breath of fresh air for fans of Syd Barrett (albeit one who would have used a time machine to listen to Hüsker Dü' early hardcore releases). Listen to "Bouquet For A Siren" or "Fantastic Disaster" to get an idea of the sort of crazy shit he could pull off. Not to everyone's tastes, obviously. Yet Gaffney's experiments bring dynamics to the whole thing that keep you constantly on your toes, as bizarre as his compositions are. If there were only Barlow's songs, this lo-fi record wouldn't work in the way it does. Sometimes the sum is worth more than the (discrete) parts. Starting with the next album, *Bakesale*, Gaffney would be out of the picture, making Sebadoh's LPs more easily digestible and/or legible. Which is why I'm surprised this later record is not in Dimery's list, instead of this one. Lou's tunes also shine on *Bakesale*, by the way (as they do in "Harmacy", the one right after), and Loewenstein's upped his game pretty well too. But I guess that's a story for another time, kiddies. 4.5/5, rounded up to 5/5, mostly because I feel that reviewers on this app are a bit lost as to the exact way the very topsy-turvy art of Sebadoh should be apprehended. Always check out Lou's songs first. Then you'll be surprised as to how far you can actually go to eventually appreciate the whole thing. Early Sebadoh is weird because it sort of needs a user's guide. But that doesn't mean they were a "bad" band by any means. I really like the first two songs, hates the third, and thought the rest of the album was very hit or miss. I’d check it out again just to see how my opinion would change. I think there is potential.

This album reinforces a belief I hold where the 1001 author held a list of randomized albums released over the last 70 years on a dart board and threw darts. If it landed on your album, congrats! You're now on the 1001 "greatest" list. That's a long winded way of me saying that this kind of sucked - garage band at best. 4/10.

Over 200 albums in, and eventually I'll learn to stop pre-judging albums. I fully expected to hate this, but this was significantly better than I expected. Certainly a much different direction than I anticipated. In fact, the direction of the album varies so much from track to track. That can be a drawback in a lot of cases, but I dig it overall. It's the line between being weird for the sake of being weird and being weird to be genuinely interesting. This falls heavily on the positive side of that. Favorite track: Sacred Attention

I can't tell if these guys are trying to be funny or not. A number of the songs sound like the hidden track at the end of a CD. It's funny at first, and then you're like "OK, so what else is there?... oh, the song is the joke. <skip>" There are a few good songs on here, I particularly liked "Homemade." That felt like a conscious decision to make a song with lyrics that made _sense_, unlike "Elixir is Zog." But for the most part it still felt like a couple of guys in a cheap studio trying things out for the first time. I mean, I get the charm of that for lo-fi, indie rock, but you still have to have actual _songs_. I first got the sense they were trying to mash up Nirvana with something like They Might Be Giants, but TMBG are at least _witty_. These guys are just... dumb. And you can be dumb, but your music better be catchy. And aside from a few songs, this is not.

The whole alternative indie rock Fugazi, Dinosaur Jr., and now Sebadoh thing is a bit too artsy for me. Critics love it but I don't think it's as good as they gush. It's not bad, sometimes really good, but I think there's a few too many of these albums on the list. I really came to enjoy Soul and Fire (nice balance of chords, plucking, and distortion) and Cliche (subtle but well-composed). Sister (good energy but the vocals...), Sacred Attention (also good energy, vocals fine), and Homemade (another subtler but deep piece) were also pretty good. But on other songs the time signatures or experimental touches or vocals are too off-putting; listen to Telecosmic Alchemy, Fantastic Disaster, Elixir is Zog, or No Way Out for what I mean. It's not awful, it's just too much trying to be creative.

This one was much more expansive and sprawling than the Sebadoh tracks I’d heard prior. There are definitely moments of fatigue given the length and instrumentation choices on the LP, but once I had an understanding of what was going on I felt this one hit a groove of its own. Shame the bonus tracks aren’t available on US Spotify, as the few I tracked down added some Interesting layers to the sounds the main LP had built up.

A perfectly servicable, skewed indie album. Nothing jumped out, but the overall mix of lovelorn, shouty and abstract is enjoyable enough.

"Bubble & Scrape" is the fourth album by American indie rock band Sebadoh. Sebadoh is a band composed of three members (Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr. fame), Eric Gaffney and Jason Lowenstein) who all each write, sing and are capable of playing all the rock band instruments. No division of labor here. So, on this album, all three members contribute songs which tend to sound unique to the writer. It was the first album recordered entirely profession in a studio away from their previous lo-fi homemade approach. Oh, there's still roughness to the edges here, though, as styles range from 60's garage to punk to grunge to power pop. Stoner rock too by the way. The album opens with Barlow's "Soul and Fire." Heavy, clear and melodic guitar. Sort of grungy. "Saying goodbye was never so much fun." A great 90's indie song. We get a sense of what Gaffney brings to the table in "Telecosmic Alchemy." Tinny drumming. 60's garage and punk. A chugging guitar. This is a combo of Sonic Youth and Mudhoney. And, Lowenstein gives us "Sister." Harder, dustorted guitar. Punk. Screaming. We've gone back to Hüsker Dü "New Day Rising." "Emma Gone Wild" brings some pyschedelia with a scratching-sounding and groovy guitar. The highlight might be Barlow's "Homemade." A song that builds slowly. A soft-loud-soft dynamic. A great guitar solo. A droning guitar puts this to me in the stoner rock genre. This is a sound that Chicago's Red Red Meat would use in a few years after that on two fantastic albums. The album ends with three songs from each of band members. Gaffney's "Bouquet for a Siren" is harder, has driving guitars and a faster beat. I'm hearing The Meat Puppets now (I name dropping way too much by the way). Barlow's "Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)" is the album's only acoustic song. A love song of sorts. The Swirlies' Sean Carmody on backing vocals. Finally, the band ends it with a bang in Lowenstein's "Flood." Screaming. Punk. 60's garage rock. "Yeah, get in the car. We're going to ride with the flood tonight. Sometimes this album comes off as a compilation album with the distinctive sounds of each songwriter. For me, it worked fine as a whole, probably, since I can't recall hearing influences of so many different bands all of which I like. If you're a fan of early Dinosaur Jr. (and who isn't?), you'll like this. Their next album "Bakesale" is also recommended.

Not a lot I enjoyed about this one. The vocals are flat and boring. There are some good riffs here and there but the music rarely comes together and becomes a good song. I also didn't buy the moments that get scream-y and tip into hardcore. Those moments should feel cathartic. Here they felt grating. “Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)” was a sweet song — a pleasant surprise near the end.

Wow what an interesting start. I don't think I've ever heard a record start with a song that begins with a specific BPM and then starts to slow down within the first 5 seconds. It's really perplexing from a musical/production viewpoint but also intriguing from an artistic viewpoint. So this being an early 1990's band this of course has that edgy grungy energy but it's a little more muted than the bigger acts of that time. I dig the experimentation / exploration in "Fantastic Disaster" but it's actually a little boring to me. Something just seems missing in the execution. The mix doesn't help it- there's parts that I imagine should feel more "in your face" but they aren't. Yea this was just alright to me. I think it won't really be a release that sticks with me.

Très original, j'étais pas complètement séduit, mais il y a vraiment de quoi d'avant-gardiste et d'unique dans cet album. C'est un album qui est aussi à l'opposé du terme "monotone" puisqu'il n'y a pas un moment pareil sur l'album, mais sans jamais sortir des sentiers indie rock. Définitivement à réessayer. 7/10

This is painful to get through, well off key and off beat the whole way through, and sometimes I can see the artistic intent with that sort of thing (like I could even see it with Bjork) but ilthere didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it here. There were a couple of bright spots which rescued this album from a one but the inconsistency really kills this one

It vacillates from juvenile white boy breakup musings poorly masquerading as poignant indie lyricism to juvenile white boy wannabe Beck manufactured weirdness that tries way too hard. I already dated this loser in college, I don't need to hear his crappy album now years later.

Low-fi US indie that reminds me of early Pavement and Guided by Voices. Fine but without the charm of either of those.

This is sure a Sub Pop release. Which I say with a reasonable amount of love, at least for a listen or two. There are several songs on Bubble & Scrape which invite that second listen. But Sebadoh doesn't capture the 30-years-later ear in any particular way, the looseness cliché and dialed down to calculated acceptable levels.

This is an unknown, but with an album cover like that, from 1993, it's gonna be alternative. Ok yep alternative, one of those deliberately bad and dissonant affairs. Like if the Presidents of the USA hadn't added hooks to their nonsense. There's a couple of reasonable tracks but you know what? The intent is there to make noisy shit. So I'm giving it the 2/5 it deserves.

Ace. Like Beck falling down the stairs, pursued by Sonic Youth and Pavement. But ragged and interesting in its own right. Homemade is bloody great. A band I was aware of back when I was heavily into this stuff but never investigated beyond Not Too Amused. Now I will.

I don't think I've ever heard Sebadoh, but for some reason I thought they were metal. Their name sounds like a metal band, no?! Anyways, it turns out that they're indie-adjacent? The music ranges from soft and sweet to noisy and dissonant. Maybe atonal is a more fitting word than dissonant. I don't really know how I feel about this album. I went from loving it to being bewildered by it and back about ten times. It's good, I think? The more straightforward garage rock tracks certainly are.

Apparently it's supposed to sound bad, that doesn't mean I'll enjoy it because it still sounds bad. Had a good moment here and there.

I remember seeing them live with my dad (I didn’t know who they were), and they didn’t disappoint. Even today, I listen to this and remember why there even was a “post-punk” sound, how powerful it could be, and I wish it had been less-defined by not being something else than it’s own honest grit.

Bubble & Scrape is the fourth album by American indie rock band Sebadoh. It was their first album recorded entirely in a studio and featured longer songs - a sign the band was focused more on polished albums. I had never heard of this band before, but the music was on par with other rock bands from the mid-90's. It was a good album, and fans of indie rock should love Bubble & Scrape.

What starts off calm, turns into a storm. The album is so difficult to listen to. It has the vocals and general sound of Nirvana but lacks any of the talent in songwriting that made Nirvana unique. Couldn’t get through it.

Truly a Jekyll and Hyde album. The first two/three songs and one of the last ones have a cool sound and are enjoyable, the ones in between sound like a trainwreck

Never heard of this band/album before and it makes sense why. In the height of grunge and alternative music this band continued the trend but falls mostly flat. The aggressiveness is there but it sounds poorly done. The instrumentals sound generic and don’t excite. Overall this isn’t worth revisiting. 4.4/10

First time listening. Found myself enjoying a handful of the tracklist, but LOATHING much of it. Stronger lyrically than instrumentally. Yes, the wildly frenetic guitars and rhythm section can fluctuate on a dime, but it sounds very unpolished; the intentional lo-fi production is a turnoff. A no for me.

I remember my brother listening to Sebadoh after he got into dinosaur jr in high school. I liked a few of their songs but not much else and that kind of holds true here. I’m not a fan of noise for noise’s sake, so a lot of this album didn’t really do it for me. ‘Soul and Fire’ and ‘Homemade’ were the only real highlights

The first Sebadoh release recorded in a professional studio manages to maintain the lo-fi aesthetics with a higher caliber songwriting (divided among the three talented songwriters) and instrumentation. Songs are uniformly strong. Soul and Fire, Think (Let Tomorrow Bee), No Way Out and Happily Divided are standouts. I am not sure it makes my list, but well worth a listen..

Not familiar with this band. The album seems very schizophrenic to me ranging from power pop ballads to growling vocals reminiscent of death metal and hardcore punk. It’s fine but it doesn’t hang together as an album for me.

Meh not really for me. This was fine, and sounds like a less poppy Nirvana which makes sense given they they shared a label. I thought the first half was stronger than the second half.

HL: "Homemade", "Think", "Soul and Fire" Neva heard of this band before today. The (bitter)sweet melodies in songs like "Think" make the atonality/noise in other songs surprising (e.g. "Fantastic Disaster"). And vice versa. Honestly I'm happy to have discovered Sebadoh, even though quality may vary among the 17 tracks on this particular release. February 8, 2023

Сознаюсь: на этой неделе я отстал немножко от прослушивания альбомов по графику, потому навёрстываю сразу 4 за один день. Мне не понравилась Металлика. Чисто поставил 2, а не 1, потому что это Металлика. И я рассчитывал на что-то годное дальше, чтобы забыть этот неприятный опыт. Как же я ошибался... Какая же лажа ждала меня здесь. В оправдание этих парней можно только привести здесь слова из Википедии: "...Sebadoh помогли развитию lo-fi музыки, для которой характерна нарочито грязная запись, осуществляемая, зачастую, при помощи простых четырехдороженых магнитофонов". Ну и что мне с этого, конечному слушателю? Как человеку, который вырос в семье фанатов музыки Ленинградского рок-клуба, мне не нужно объяснять, что значит "плохая запись". Но типа музыке Аквариума или Кино это придаёт шарм, а здесь только усугубляет положение бедолаг-музыкантов. Здесь кажется собрались все мои болевые точки: отвратительный вокал, безобразное стерео, какофония в аранжировках... И самое страшное во всей этой истории, что статистика Spotify тоже не оправдывает ребят: больше половины песен имеют менее 100к прослушиваний, это кажется минимум на данный момент. Без этого альбома спокойно можно прожить. Что он в этом списке забыл - непонятно. Как будто просто по блату включили его сюда. Чисто "друзья друзей" или что-то в этом духе. Первая песня наиболее слушабельна, остальное - очень специфический материал.

Bouquet for a siren got some Nirvana vibes for sure. Also some Elliott smith vibes here and there. A couple solid songs on this album but a lot of just ~ok stuff too :/

Everything on this album just sounds a little bit off. That's probably on purpose because I never got the feeling that they didn't know what they were doing but that said this was definitely not for me.

Nice but unsurprising

Before today, I had never heard of Sebadoh. They are a 90's lo-fi indie rock band. Their co-founder and one of their vocalists, Lou Barlow, also co-founded the band Dinosaur Jr, which explains why those two bands sound similar. By times, Sebadoh sounds like a shittier Nirvana. In other songs, their sludgy guitars and slow beat makes them sound like Smashing Pumpkins. And still other times, their high energy songs have them sounding like the Vines or Primus. In certain songs, the instruments are horribly out of tune. Perhaps this is by design, but I personally find it painful to listen to. The lyrics are largely nonsensical, especially in their weird psychadelic songs included on this album such as Elixir is Zog. Overall, a standard indie rock record from the 90's. It blends in with the mass amount of other music from this genre and time period though. Nothing really jumped out at me. It wasn't bad, just not spectacular. Favourite songs: Flood, Soul and Fire, Two Years Two Days, Sacred Attention, Homemade (I think this song is about beating off, idk?) Least favourite songs: Elixir is Zog, Fantastic Disaster, Telescopic Alchemy, No Way Out (the last minute of the song sounds like someone channel surfing through random noise.... Why?!?) 2/5

Surprising choice (had expected Bakesale, one of the most popular records on 90s university campuses?) In the 90s Lou Barlow (as Sentridoh) and Prince were alike, releasing big selections of songs without proper quality control. However, as Sebadoh, on Sebadoh III - B&S - Bakesale ..certainly not the case. I like Bakesale (5) and Sebadoh III (5) a bit more, but rate B&S above Harmacy (4). Contributions of Gaffney and Loewenstein are as always uneven, but on B&S I would say things are generally fine. In fact, my favourite three songs are Soul and Fire (B), Happily Divided (L) and Think (B), but Bouquet for a Siren (G) and Sister (L) are also excellent. 4.5 (due to a couple of weak songs) -> 5

I like Sebadoh a lot and generally in the order Barlow > Loewenstein > Gaffney (although the mix is definitely an added value). For that reason later albums are preferred, yet this one is much more than ok.

I’ve always enjoyed the Barlow-led songs of Dinosaur Jr. I don’t enjoy him any less in Sebadoh. Bubble And Scrapes ranges from the frantic and hysterical, “Fantastic Disaster” and “No Way Out”, to absolute pieces of beauty like “Soul and Fire” and “Think (Let Tomorrow Bee”.

Jedan od najboljih perioda ikad što se tiče žanra koji me privukao do kraja. 3.5, ipak fali do četvorke, maknuo bih sigurno 3-4 pjesme, ovo ostalo je il dost dobro ili treba growat da mi se više svidi. Homemade mi je najdraža. Nadam se da će biti nekakav koncert njihov u Zagrebu.

Never heard of Sebadoh and expected less than what I got. For an early 90s album, Bubble and Scrape harkens back to some mid-80s punk rock, and that's not a bad thing. The 90s idea of punk rock became pop for the sake of punk and really ruined what was a great genre, had Sebadoh been the flag bearer for the genre, I'd be curious to see how much better it would become. My only critiques of this album are that for a punk-ish album it runs long at 47 minutes and some of the songs sound repetitive. 3/5.

There was maybe one song on this album I liked. The rest was boring at best, complete rubbish at worst.

There was one good track on this album that has saved it from being a 1, but much of the rest of the album was so shit that I don't care to put in the effort to find out which was the song I liked. I get that the shitty out-of-tune sound was completely intentional, but that doesn't make it good, does it?

That was awesome. It's noisy, sludgy, gloopy and yucky. It's like somebody took a regular grunge band, trapped them in a steel shack in the middle of the desert and recorded them through a Speak&Spell toy. The musical equivalent of CCTV footage.

Sounds like it was recorded in a bedroom by a bunch of friends (though it’s actually studio-produced), which gives it a charming lo-fi air. However, several songs don’t stick around long enough to impact the listener in any meaningful way.

I was curious about this initially, since I generally like this sort of music and have heard of this band before. It started off alright, but as it continued the songs just kept sounding the same. I’ve never heard of this album before and don’t understand why it’s on the list.

I feel like I should like Sebadoh but just never really have. Not sure what I’m missing because there are tons of similar bands from the era I really enjoy. I even got to see a reunion show of theirs back in the 00s. Not a bad album, just not what I’m looking for really. I’m sure there were some but I was super busy and listening to this on the go, so I didn’t get a chance to write down standout tracks while I listened.

This sucks. This is exactly what I think of when I think of boring, overrated indie rock.

I guess Sebadoh was to grunge and 90s indie what bands like Country Joe and the Fish were to psychedelic rock? Which means to say that they were one of the first influential names to come up in the scene, but ultimately became overshadowed by the artists that came after them. Bubble and Scrape is essentially a record of demos, or at least that's what it sounds like. The lo-fi, somewhat minimally produced sound adds character to the music, but the end result pales in comparison to the rest of the genre. Like a beta version of something soon to be perfected. Well, at least they helped kickstart something new. Standout tracks were Homemade, Cliché, and Happily Divided.

Slackerishly ragged and full-on stoner vibey, the best cuts come early and the willful and sloppy discordance of the rest wears itself out. Lacking the pathos (perhaps accidental) of Pavement or the elevating ennui of Dinosaur, Jr. or the depth and ambition of Sonic Youth. In other words, the overall effect is rather more of scrape than bubble. Some fun lines, (“Here I am, on my knees / With nothing to blame but my curiosity” and “I see something we should do / If you need one, then you need two / I won't hold back, so why should you?”) keep it just the right side of average but not quite all the way to excellence.

I'd be lying if I didn't say I didn't want to listen to the album a second time. It is a bizarre record, but I think it has its place. Definitely the kind of album that probably has a very strong cult following. The opening track 'Soul And Fire' is a really damn good song. For some reason, I love the chaotic nature of 'Fantastic Disaster'. But overall, the album is not for me right now, though I can see it becoming an acquired taste. 2/5

This shit should have been huge in 1993. My hunch is the rock press was too enamored with the Billy Corgans, Eddie Vedders and Kurt Cobains to even notice this album. I was working for a college radio station at the time and even I have no memory of this, the definition of flying under the radar.

I feel like I should have enjoyed this more. It's listed as indie music and although it's 90s (my least enjoyed decade) I do like indie stuff from every era. Yet this felt very disorienting. It couldn't really decide what it wanted to be and as a result didn't feel cohesive. Also the lofi quality just didn't work.

Was it just me or did the production quality degrade as the album progressed?

Het is niet slecht. Las dat het shoegaze postrock was en was al heel verheugd dat er wat meer pit in zat. Bleek dan dat het om eigenlijk halfslachtige metal ging en daarvoor is het dan wel minder verrassend.

Starts pretty good and just gets better and more interesting. This is perfect for fans of Polvo or the kind of obnoxious people who will tell you that the guitars in At The Drive In's Relationship of Command are out of tune with the air of someone who uncovered the hidden secrets of Rock'n'Roll. I am both of these people.

A solid indie album that holds up in todays world. There is something in it's soundscape that screams 90s but it's a little hard to put my finger on what it is - perhaps it's the countless 90s teen shows that had soundtracks that were similar sounding. Best: Soul & Fire Worst: Fantastic Disaster

It sounded like pre-grunge, punk at times. Guitars sounded out of tune, likely in purpose. There was a lot of screaming on some songs. I can hear a lot on this album that many bands may have been influenced by. I didn't particularly enjoy it

It's like Dinosaur Jr. but it isn't

If you only listen to mainstream, commercial music then this album would be easily dismissed. The sound is lo-fi, the instruments sound out of tune at times and the singing isn't strong. Lou Barlow (formerly of Dino Jr), isn't seeking commercial success or accolades for his music, instead he delivers some raw, heartfelt music that could be considered indie, alternative, or just plain weird, but it's the kind of music I've come to appreciate and I'm glad this list acknowledges musicians and bands from outside the "norm". Bubble And Scrape was actually recorded in a professional studio instead of "home-recorded", so this would be considered a more polished work compared to previous albums. I like it, we need more bands like Sebadoh and musicians like Lou Barlow that push the boundaries of quality music instead of the bland radio-friendly schlock we have to endure most of the time.

“We have Guided By Voices at home”

This listener is a sucker for indie rock, and this album did not disappoint at all. Granted, after some time the search for indie rock tends to dwindle as a few indies grow up and join the so-called mainstream, but this one from 1993 is a very welcome throwback to the less complicated, the more intentional creation of independent rock. Warm instruments, restrained drums, melodic vocals, dare it be called 'emo', no, this was better than emo. It is what emo should have stayed being, good writing and enjoyable to listen and relate, not some whiney-complain-y mess. This was a neat surprise, a perfect album for less than energetic days, just a really good listen.

Sebadoh is kind of like Pavement. I know they are out there, I know people love to listen to it, but mostly it doesn't do it for me. I always feel like I must be missing something, and indeed sometimes a band will suddenly contextualize for me, so I'll just say, I'm not quite ready for Sebadoh if this album is representative.

One day my wife asked me if I knew who Lou Barlow was. She said she works with a woman who's his sister. Of course I knew who he was. I grew up a huge fan of Dinosaur Jr. and J. Mascis. But, it was a long time after Sebadoh formed before I started listening to them. And when I did this album had already come and gone. Harmacy was the first Sebadoh album I ever purchased, but it never grew on me and I'm pretty sure I sold it to Amoeba. Listening to this now, it still doesn't grow on me but it's way better than Harmacy. This is quintessential 90's alt-art-crap, hard to listen to today but cutting edge in the world it existed. This and other albums like it, proved anyone with something to say could be a musician, grow a following and build an album in their basement. "Corporate Rock Sucks!" was the rally cry This is the stuff at the other end. I suppose Indy Art Rock showed Corporate rock, but what it really did is prove that there's a market for lo-fi songs expressive songs like 'Fantastic Disaster' because what else are people going to do? Surf Insta and create Tik Toks? I'll never completely understand whatever happened between J. Mascis and Lou Barlow. Someone said JM threw a cymball at LBs head during a performance and walked out. I couldn't find any of that online, but I didn't search much 'cause I'm consumed with infinite Tik Tok scrolling.

I first heard Sebadoh through "On Fire," probably around 2005. At the time, I didn't know that the song was nearly 10 years old. At the time, I didn't seek out more Sebadoh. But I don't know why. Because "On Fire" is an outstanding song. But I never would have guessed that they had been around since 1986. I never knew about their connection to Dinosaur Jr. or their place in the late 80s lo-fi scene. I also never would have expected them to make the 1001 list, and I never would have expected said album to be so disappointing. Nothing on "Bubble and Scrape" rises to the heights of "On Fire." After two solid songs to start the album, "Telecosmic Alchemy" was excessively dissonant and obnoxious. Was that the point? If it wasn't the point, the point was lost on me. If it was the point, the point was lost on me. The alchemical disaster that was tracks 3 and 4 luckily didn't last, and they got back to some fuzzed out excellence. But the album continued to be way too uneven. Did they just record everything they came up with? And always go with the first take? Maybe that raw DIY sound is a hallmark of lo-fi, but there was just too much mess on "Bubble and Scrape" for me. After I finished the album, and went back for second tries on a few parts, I sought out "On Fire," and it was every bit as good as I remembered. And this album's follow-ups "Bakesale" and "Harmacy" are both pretty terrific. I think they still maintain their core sound, but it's cleaner and more polished and feels like there was someone there helping edit their include-everything impulses. They both still have a crazy number of tracks and include some short weirder ones, but they're not as jarring as on "Bubble and Scrape." Apparently "B & S" started a shift for Sebadoh away from their original acoustic, home-recorded sound. Maybe they were just figuring out a new style. What came later was much better. I'll have to check out their early acoustic work. But I won't be coming back to "Bubble and Scrape."

I had a couple Sebadoh albums (Bakesale and Harmacy) and I have literally never met anyone else who has even heard of them, let alone liked them, so I was surprised as hell to see them pop up on 1001 albums. I also was surprised as hell with some of the sonic chaos on the album. I get that they were all “look at us we are so lo-fi and cool” but why make so many sounds that don’t sound good? Turns out there is a good reason why this album sounds like two different bands, all the songs I like are written by Lou Barlow and all the songs I don’t were by Eric Gaffney who left the band after this album and didn’t appear on Bakesale of Harmacy (if you like the first couple songs, give those other albums a listen). I wish I could give this album a higher rating because the songs I like, I really like, but overall it’s a mess.

This album is erratic and unorganized as evidenced by the subdued Think (Let Tomorrow Bee) followed immediately by the screamy Flood.

All over the place in terms of quality. Had some really well made stand out tracks that I really enjoyed. The low points were pretty uninteresting for me. Would like to listen to it again sometime in the future when I'm not driving.

Wow that was not a good album. It had one or two good songs, but by the end I just had bad listening fatigue. I didn't hate it enough to give it a 1 so 2 it is.

I am not normally a fan of the willfully obtuse lo-fi of the 90s. It often fails to rock. But this record I enjoyed (much more than, say, Pavement, who I tend to think of as the emperor's new music). It fairly often rocks, the tunes are memorable, and the album overall is muscular and thought out. Sometimes it embraces 'weirdness' in a way that reminds me a little of Primus. I am OK with the use of dissonance and/or a failure to tune the guitars. That's OK, that can rock. A pleasant surprise. Would listen again.

A little bit of Bauhaus. Has that Boston - The Feelies - vibe. Fits in my wheelhouse

Quite liked this, not really sure why I never got big into them way back when. Oh yes, yes I do - remember reading about them in Melody Maker and hearing tracks hither and thither but never actually seeing a single Sebadoh anything in any record shops.

I over looked this at the time. A lot of interesting material on here.

Suprised me in a good way. I've listened quite a few 90's rock albums through here, but none of them had stand out like this one until now. fav track: Homemade

punk/grunge bleh

Really enjoyed this, some of it sounds like early Biffy, or gentle Nirvana, but it is still entirely its own thing. A band I plan to seek out more from.
