I can respect this as a concept album, but it's not for me. Heaven & Hell is the exception, but I've never gotten into Wu Tang or their members' solo work. Granted this was made in the 90s, but the use of f****t and blatant lyrical sexism is jarring.
Call me insane but I didn't get this one... love most of wu tangs golden era stuff but this one didn't click. update: I love it
I don't like rap, i don't like affected speech and I don't like swearing. I'd rate this minus 3 if I could.
4.1 - It seems that within the expanded Wu Tang universe of records, "Liquid Swords" gets much of the esteem; however, I prefer the beats and rhymes on this joint. Also, I love the drug dealer narratives and the skits that give this some cinematic heft. "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx" paves the way for later records like "Fishscale" by Ghostface and "Hell Hath No Fury" by Clipse.

My worst nightmare
For real, know what I’m saying, man. Takes way too long for the music to start playing. I also have to admit that I am bored to death with tough-talking, gunshots and sirens, bitches and hos, gangster wannabe music. But it is nice to hear some NY rap. Sounds more authentic and musical. No palm trees and sunshine. The parts that are songs are pretty good. Knowledge God is nice. Ok, I was fully prepared to hate this. But I’ve added a bunch to my favorites. The parts that are music are genuinely good. Overall, the chatter was unnecessary. It always breaks up the flow on a record. But, the music bits are solid.
I appreciate Wu Tang Clan and their lyricism, wit and approach to the rap game. I would consider them the best group ever, and many of the individuals as solo artists some of the best rappers ever period. Having said that, I find the 90s era attempts all kinda blend together and have so many similarities that they don’t stand out. This album fits into that trend. Enjoyed listening to it, but is it better than 36 Chambers ? No. Does it offer enough differences to make me go here instead of 36 for a different Wu Tang vibe ? Not really.

Killer debut from Raekwon. Relentless bars, minimalist beats. Enjoyed this record a lot, but felt a little too long.

Aggressive gangsta rap. Raekwons flow is an acquired taste. He has an excellent ability to change up his rhythm and emphasizes his lyrics. The content of the raps is the usual: drugs, women, violence, and self-promotion. I think the picture into the the life is painted well, and this album is a period piece that led to modern rap.
Essentially an unofficial Wu Tang album, OB4CL brings everything you’d expect from that group, with RZA behind the decks, at the height of the power. This album isn’t going to surprise you often, though there are a few tracks where the production and the content are moving just slightly towards a more contemporary sound. Despite these efforts, there’s not quite enough going on to justify the 75 minute runtime. Gangsta rap fans will love it, the rest will probably leave it. Favorite track: Ice Cream

Really quite bored of Wu-Tang. 3 maybe 4 albums in? Hardly anything has grabbed my attention. Its not bad, but it all feels quite samey. The albums are always bloated. Fave Track: Glaciers of Ice (maybe) 2.3/5

I början tyckte jag att albumet hade en bra vibe, men det blev väldigt uttjatat efter ett tag med tanke på att albumet var 18 LÅTAR LÅNGT. För att albumet skulle fått lite mer poäng från mig skulle det behövas kortas ner en hel del eftersom många låtar skulle helt kunnat skippas. Ska även tilläggas att man inte ska fokusera på låttexten, då kan de bli lite väl mycket. Favoritlåtar från albumet var: Verbal Intercourse. Albumet får 2/5 stjärnor

# Playlist track - Criminology (feat. Ghostface Killah) # Notes - The album starts with 2 minutes of nonsensical phrases that end with "son". Awful. - Read the wiki, thought it was a cool idea, but it doesn't hold itself together. - There are nice beats and melodies here and there, but after the album is over, I don't want to hear nothing that rhymes with "son", "man", "dog", and "sayin'" for 3 months. - Also, horrible singing in "Heaven & Hell"

Si vous vous demandez pourquoi Ghostface Killah est en featuring sur tous les morceaux de l'album, la raison est très simple. Celui-ci devait à la base poser sur l'intro mais au moment où Raekwon le remercia d'avoir participé, Ghostface l'informa que le prochain bus ne passerait à leur arrêt que dans 58 minutes et qu'il avait donc le temps de poser sa voix sur quelques autres morceaux. Raekwon, pas très emballé par l'idée, se retrouva un peu obligé d'accepter. Au terme du sixième morceau, ce dernier demanda à son ami un peu intrusif s'il pouvait ramasser le sabre laser qu'il avait apporté et quitter lentement le studio pour qu'il puisse enfin enregistrer sa partie solo du projet. Mais Ghostface avait apparemment oublié ses clés chez lui et ses parents ne rentreraient que dans deux heures. Raekwon dut alors avec dépit le laisser finir l'album avec lui.

I liked Blue Raspberry’s voice on Rainy Dayz and that’s about it! The rest was horrible.

I've owned this album for years but this was the first time i made it all the way through. I enjoyed it, even though i would lose the skits. i wouldn't say i'm a huge Wu-Tang fan, but this one is pretty damn solid.

Another rapper. Mid 90s. Should be like half skits. This guy was Wu-Tang right? This stuff tends to date really rapidly (kinda like that album cover) but let’s see what we got. Striving For Perfection - word. Son son. Our first predictable skit. 1/5 Knuckleheadz - First song ending in z. They might have already hit their cussing quotient within 20 seconds. Oh yeah, this is rap from a different era. Feels very languid. Ok. 1/5 Knowledge God - this is a step up. Like the beat, the flow. Dope, guns and money. Always a good combination. Rap is background music isn’t it? 2/5 Criminology - oh man, is Ghostface Killer killing it or what? 3/5 Incarcerated Scarfaces - distinct lack of skits so far. Good. This album is getting in its groove. Who’s the Black Trump? Funny, but fuck Trump. 3/5 Rainy Dayz - z song #2. This is fine. One of a billion soul/rap crossovers. 2/5 Guillotine (Swordz) - z to the third power. Shadow boxing! Awesome! Song’s ok though. 2/5 Can It All Be So Simple - gunshots! It’s gangsta rap bingo in this bitch. Don’t trust little kids with guns. Eh whatever. Album is hitting that over saturation point, I’m not even halfway done. 1/5 Shark N****s (Biters) - I love how every song is an Explicit tag. Skit though. Keeping it real by forcing me to listen to a skit. 1/5 Ice Water - Yawn. I think even in the 90s, these albums were never really meant to be listened in one sit-through, but instead be shuffled with other CDs or skipped the songs you liked. 1/5 Glaciers of Ice - I’m tuning out a bit here. It has an interesting beat, but I’ll never listen to this again. Not willingly though. Boring. 1/5 Verbal Intercourse - just keeps boring me. I think rap is so focused on business that they do it like business - flood the zone with shit until something sticks. Bucket load of homophobia. That’s definitely 90s rap. 1/5 Wisdom Body - can’t really tell what is going to work on this album. 2/5 Spot Rusherz - zzzz. I guess there were only 4 z’s on this album. The rapping in the background of this intro was 10x better than the last 6 songs. Proves my theory that this is suppose to be background music. Like this one, and the black Lex Luthor. 3/5. Ice Cream - spuds Mackenzie! That’s a deep cut. Not at the time. This is finally a fun song. Is that Method Man? He knew when to show up. Easily the best song. 4/5 Wu-Gambinos - I literally see a half dozen guys just walking around a stage with the mic in their face. I mean, are rap shows interesting? 2/5 Heaven & Hell - this has got a groove. I can see this playing in my background. 3/5 North Star (Jewels) - it’s fine. 2/5 Definitely a 90s Wu-Tang album. About 1/5 of it, good maybe even genius, 3/5 to 4/5 boring and repetitive and 1/5 skits. This album has some real skit-restraint. I can appreciate that. I’m sure this was hugely influential, but I just don’t know enough about hip hop to give it props for that. Honestly, I don’t ever wanna have to sit through the whole album again, but there are individual tracks that I’d put in rotation. In fact, I suspect in a mixed genre playlist all these tracks would play well. All together it’s just too much. Or maybe I just need to tune it out into the background. I dunno. 2/5

Allright. But not something that really sticks out.
The rapping is good but the music is often just one good loop repeated 176 times. It grew on me as I listened though - or I got hypnotized.

Okay. Not as good as original wu-tang clan
Often rap doesn't work for me because of the misogyny, and this had that, but mostly it just wasn't very good.
Genius pastiche of the Mafia movie genre, appropriating it's poses and cliches to present scenes of a youth spent hustling. Playful, funny, and deadly serious - this album is an endless stream of verses from a hugely talented groups of MCs coming into their prime. Coming in a couple years before the total commercialization of hip hop and it's total take over of pop, there's a lot more room in the wu-tang formula for this expansive wordy delivery with minimal use of refrains. The production is stripped down - basic drum-machine beats, crackling samples, and simple melodic hooks on a loop give a cinematic atmosphere that gives a bare bones rhythmic structure and mood for the rappers to flit around.

The music here is just about as lean as rap gets. Drums are the main focus, accompanied by bass and some spare sample loops (usually piano). The drums are hard-hitting but not exactly crisp. They have a sort of low-fidelity sound that gives the beats grit. The rapping is just as percussive. You can zone out a bit, miss a few lyrics and still appreciate the craft of what Raekwon and Ghostface Killah are doing. The vocals fit right alongside the snare hits and piano samples. To me, it sounds like jazz the way they riff over the beats. And anyway I don’t think the lyrics are always 100% essential. You get some drug-dealing imagery, the occasional gun threat and a lot of stack your cash motivational talk. There’s isn’t a lot of variation. The album could use editing; it feels repetitive. But the craftsmanship on display is impressive. Okay hold up, the soulful “Heaven or Hell” is a late surprise on the album. I’m surprised there aren’t more songs like it or at least more songs featuring a different style. This is nice.
I feel like I've heard a handful of Raekwon's music before but this is the first time I'm really paying attention. I have to admit it's not really connecting with me. I like a lot of different kinds of rap, from traditional old school rap to gangsta rap, to comedic rap, to experimental rap, but I feel like this didn't grab me as well as it should have. I know this is a well known and well liked release and and of course everyone knows Wu-Tang Clan aint nothing to fuck with, but I think I need to hear this album a few more times to fuck with it. For me I am always thinking of context and this one came in a little "thin?" i guess? Recently on this list we heard the maximalist "To Pimp a Butterfly" and it's a huge contrast to this, and I feel like is coloring my review. I will listen more though!
Quite an exhausting listen, and I'm still someone who struggles with all the interstitial skits that pepper hip hop albums, but the music itself--no thanks-heard better

Evidence a stupid conservative gave for thinking Taylor Swift is a man. 1. The powers that be (he doesn't clarify who they are) like word games so they made the first two letters of Taylor Swift's name T and S. The same letters of Trans-sexual. 2. She has a "power jaw" "massive forehead" and "castrado proportions" He also exclaimed "that ain't a woman's shape" 3. Travis Kelce took the jab and he's supposedly manly so liberals don't want him to be gay. I disavow all 3 of these reasons. I think Taylor Swift is a woman. There are biological women with her body shape and facial structure. Mr. Conservative has an agenda for wanting Travis Kelce to be gay. Long and bad
just way too long
I was a big fan of “Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers” when it appeared on this list recently, having never heard it before. Launching an entirely distinct movement of hip-hop, it spawned what became known (to me) as the WTSU (Wu-Tang Sonic Universe- you can keep that). If the whole clan form East Coast hip-hop’s Avengers, Raekwon is their Thor with Ghostface Killah’s Hulk: two of the hardest of the bunch on their own side-adventure. Also returning from the Clan is RZA on production, bringing the same smokiness, mystique and even kung-fu samples that “36 Chambers” had. Overall, though, there’s less energy and a little more bagginess to “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx”. “Knuckleheads” is a fairly muted opening against a reverberating, rumbling bass line, and things quickly take a somber turn for the album’s remainder, with moody, stifling samples and introspective lyrics. Occasionally, there’s a galvanising change of pace: “Criminology” is a wake up call, with its brass sample blaring in like an alarm. A harder edged “Can It Be All So Simple”, originally on the Clan’s debut album, recontextualises the track slightly and forms an interesting curio. Guest stars are solid: Nas proves his worth as a hip hop heavyweight with a standout verse in “Verbal Intercourse”, and Capadonna is recruited in U-God’s absence. Ghostface also makes sterling contributions throughout. But for me, the MVP of the guest stars in Blue Raspberry. It’s a novelty to hear a woman’s vocal on a Wu-Tang record, and she lends a very welcome extra dimension to “Rainy Dayz” and “Heaven & Hell”. Both these tracks were released as singles, and happen to be the most luscious, opulent and classy tracks on the record: I’ll be coming back to both of them. My biggest disappointment with “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” is its failure to live up to the promise of its concept. I read that Raekwon and Ghostface plotted the album like a movie, riffing on the mafia genre and placing it within 90’s New York with a rise to power, fall into prison and then a resurgence into the rap game. It’s really intriguing stuff and could have become my favourite hip-hop album had it worked. But reading through the lyrics, I struggle to discern a clear narrative, an obvious flow or the sense of pace. I won’t fault the lyricism at play, because the words are rich and dense and the Clan are on form as ever. But as a full package, it feels both lacking and poorly paced for me.

One of the best hip-hop albums of all time. Arguably the best solo Wu-Tang record. So many classic tracks. Incarcerated Scarfaces, and Guillotine are two of my favourite beats of all time. Raekwon and Ghostface are iconic and there's no misses on this. Classic. 10/10
Music for idiots, by idiots 👍 Boring and mundane, mind-numbingly monotonous and dull. Each song is nauseatingly repetitive. The “songwriting” for each song consists of a generic 4-second beat that is looped for 4 minutes while he raps about boring cliche rap shit I lost 10 IQ points listening to this. This album takes a heavy psychic toll on the listener
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx I am familiar with the Wu-Tang Clan. I'm familiar with lots of their solo albums. I was not familiar with Raekwon's. This was a very interesting album. However, it's a product of it's time and place, the 90s. As with most hip hop from this time period, there's a lot of homophobic lyrics and use of the F-slur. Plus in today's political climate, I can't stand hearing any song name dropping the orange clown. I am also well aware that I'm not the target demographic, and that I may not feel a lot of the songs or lyrics. But the production by Rza is so good. And like most hip hop albums in the 90s, there are so many skits. I'm glad that this trend isn't as big as it used to be. 2/5

Bangers only
I love this album! It reminds me of another album that I listen to quite often. I love albums with weird sound effects in the background. Woahhhh, okay. I did not appreciate the brawling and gun shots in the middle of the album. Knocking down my rating by a star just for that.
So I know that Wu-Tang is for the children, and I'm learning album after album that I am not the children. I don't like the group stuff and I don't like the solo stuff, either. I wish I was cool enough to appreciate it, but I don't.
The interludes sound like a parody of GTA San Andreas dialog.
I found the interludes unnecessary. Lots of rap royalty here so overall a solid album.
I miss the old days when rap groups used an abundance of samples and sounds to create a unique flow. However, overall the album was a bit too "long winded" for me...like trying to sit through a 3 hour movie. I realize that's more my problem than the album's...but it is what it is

Lyrically pained, good base beat and some compelling rap poetry. Unnecessary amount of swearing.
For some reason I hadn't given this a dedicated listen before. I love the layout of this album and the storytelling. On top of that, some really strong beats to go with Raekwon's easy flow.
I never listened to this album in my youth, but I was aware of its legendary status. RZA said that "The theme of the album is two guys that had enough of the negative life and was ready to move on, but had one more sting to pull off. They're tired of doing what they doing, but they're trying to make this last quarter million. That's a lot of money in the streets. We gonna retire and see our grandbabies and get our lives together." Great storytelling, almost cinematic.
This was a tough album to rate. I think I would give it a 3.5 at best.

Not the greatest hip hop album I’ve listened to, very mid Top tracks: Ice Cream
This is quite different to some of the breakout Wu-Tang stuff we've had, it's a more chilled and stripped-back beat for the most part, accomplished but not spectacular lyrical work, a bit too cinematic and listenable but not memorable.
Didn't connect with this one at all really, doesn't start brilliantly and doesn't end well either. There's some decent stuff in the middle, but it's not particularly consistent - the odd great landing line or perfectly judged sample, but they're too few and far between IMO. 2/5.
Would have been better without the swearing, gunshots and nonsense talks in between music ... Apart from that actualy quite nice.

Just like every solo Wu album, this is a solo project in name only. Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx shines brightest when joined by his fellow Wu-Tang-Clan members. 3.5/5
I had no clue that Raekwon started the mafioso rap craze, the Tommy Hilfiger craze, the Cristal obsession. Damn. This album is iconic - not to mention filled with enough thick spit-worthy rhymes to clog up a dentist’s sink.

I'm not really into gangsta rap and i expect no album will change this. I just find the lyrical subject matter obnoxious. However, I have come back to this album more than any other Wu Tang project. The production is great and the flow/cadence from Raekwon and most of his guest spots. He's definitely a wordsmith, even if i don't get on well with the mafioso posturing. 68 mins is too long and there are skits/intros that are like listening to paint dry. 3.5*
Ik ken de meeste van die Wu-Tang gasten wel, dus ook Raekwon en Spookgezicht Moordenaah, maar toch heb ik me nooit heel erg verdiept in de Wu-Tang bende. Ik weet alleen dat ik Kung Fu film samples kan verwachten. Ik kom recht van Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle af en dit is toch wel heel andere hiphop. Wat eenvoudigere, donkerdere beats die als een boemeltreintje blijven doorrollen en rappers die er vooral op gebrand zijn om nonchalant hun talent tentoon te spreiden. Waar Snoog Dogg en Dré klinken alsof ze eindeloos in een studio hebben gezeten klinkt dit meer als een uit de hand gelopen cypher sessie. Het album is wel iets te lang. Dus hoewel het lekkere rap is, wordt het na een tijdje wat langdradig. 45 minuten tot een uur was beter geweest want daarna was de Ghost bij mij een beetje uit de fles. Wel 4 sterren, want dit soort dagen koester ik als ik weer eens een jazzalbum krijg.

This could be a great album but it's bloated with filler and crap. Cut it down to half the length and it would be so much better for it.
Zu sehr HipHop
The Wu-Tang solo record that sounds the most like Wu-Tang. Has the same simple hard beat style and sample use (some soulful and some horror-themed), but more coherently strung together by the intimate member Raekwon, and features the coke-fueled performance of Ghostface Killah. I'm impressed by how simple yet nostalgic and full the production sounds. Matches his style well, and I like when they let the instrumentals go off on their own in some tracks, like "Criminology." It actually sounds more mature (but not as iconic) as the actual Wu-Tang records. Grows exhausting by the 2nd half, with several sounding like B-sides with how forgettable they can be (like "Spot Rusherz"). My favorite tracks were definitely the ones where they got the other members in, and I wasn't expecting a Nas appearance ("Verbal Intercourse" had incredible raps but sounded incomplete otherwise). Overall a very strong effort with plenty of great tracks. I'd cut a few to get it under an hour, and add more creative samples in some tracks (I didn't like how a few tracks just repeated iconic samples from other Wu-Tang records).

Aside from Tical (which I probably didn't give a fair review at the time) this is probably the least favorite Wu-Tang album I've gotten, not because it's bad but because I think the rest are just so much better. Between 36 chambers, Fishscale, and liquid swords this album just can't compete even though the production is still good and all of the features are solid, especially the Nas one. There also felt like an excessive amount of skits which got annoying after a while. I liked criminology and guillotine the most.
A Wu classic. While I prefer the debut and Liquid Swords, this might be third. Depends on how I'm feeling; Ghostface has a few records that could fill that spot. Built ONLY 4 Cuban Linx, and I'm nowhere near Cuban Links... 18 tracks of mid 90s braggadocio hip hop, if that's your thing. Features nearly every member of the Wu-Tang Clan in some way shape or form and it's widely know that they are nutin' to fuck wit, so I won't.
I don’t think I’ve heard any solo Raekwon songs. I’ve obvious heard Wu Tang Clan before, and do quite like Ghostface Killah, so I go into this fairly optimistically. Looking at the track list, Ghostface seems to feature on almost every song. That’s a bit odd innit? Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Incarcerated Scarfaces Perhaps I wasn’t in the right mood today for this album, but I found it rather dull. I expected, and wanted, to enjoy this but it just wasn’t the case. There weren’t really any catchy hooks, no attention grabbing lyrics, and generally nothing to really make it stand out. It’s not that I hated it, I just expected it to be a lot better. It’s fine to have on in the background, but listening to the whole album felt like a bit of a chore.

Blind album, recognize the wu tang member. Album was alright. I feel like personally a lot of the solo work that came out of hip hop that was from a group, never really compared to the original. The only group to successfully do it was NWA with Dre and Ice, and I am not a huge fan of Ice to begin with. Eazy E wasn't more successful IMO either. Wu Tang had the same fate in my eyes. Maybe a hot take.
I struggled with this one. I’ve listened to it a lot recently, and each time I’ve come out confused. I don’t think it’s bad necessarily, the beat work is fantastic. I just have a problem with Raekwon’s flow. He doesn’t seem to switch it up, so a lot of the album seems to blend together. RZA’s production is fine, but it doesn’t hit as hard as in other Wu-Tang and Wu-Tang adjacent projects. And the opening skit just put me in a bad mood, which is something I can’t really explain. It’s just… like get to the point man, get to the rhymes. I don’t wanna hear this shit. And then he gets to the rapping, and it’s fine. But that’s about all I can give it

"Only Bulit 4 Cuban Linx..." is the debut solo studio album by American rapper and Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon. Also referred to as "Purple Tape," the album was produced by Wu-Tang member RZA and mostly all members of Wu-Tang appear at some point including Ghostface Killah who is the co-star. The album is considered a pioneer in the mafiaso rap genre as it tells the story of two guys that have had enough of the negative life and want to get their life together but they need to pull off one more sting. It was composed to play as a film with lots gangster film dialogue sampling. Commercially, it hit #4 in the US and had unanimous critical acclaim. "Striving for Perfection" starts things off with Raekwon and Ghostface talking about their long term goals which is to get out. Nice sampling with the theme from the 1989 John Woo film "The Killer." "Criminology" begins with dialogue sampling from "Scarface." Imagine that. Hypnotic beats and laid-back. Ghostface comes in strong as he tells his crimilogy story. The remix of Wu-Tang's " Can it Be All Simple" starts with arguments, fighting and gunshots. The glorified mafiaso lifestyle and how they want to get out. A sample of Gladys Knight & the Pips is expertly used as the chorus. "Ice Cream" compares women to the flavors of ice cream. Cappadonna joins Ghost and Rae in the rapping verses. I think just about all the Wu-Tang members appear in "Wu-Gambinos." The rappers talk over the sampling as they compare themselves to the mob. The album proper closes with "Heaven & Hell." It's slow and soulful. A Syl Johnson sample. It's come to an end as they hope for redemption. Even with the mafiaso theme, the music and beats are chill and at times souful. There's absolutely excellent production by RZA with the music, the sampling and the flow between all the rappers. The forceful Ghostface works with the more-laid back Raekwon. I don't if I completely followed the story as a whole; each song seemed to be its own story. However, the album does flow musically as a whole. The album is not only one of the best rap albums in the mafiaso rap genre but rap genre overall.
Not really my thing
Still imperial phase Wu Tang. Raekwon and Ghostface basically rendered all dealer rap after this fully redundant by doing it better than anyone before or after could. Rae brings the street knowledge, bit Ghostface Killah's rhymes are so complex and involved that most are still digging out more meaning and jokes from them 25 years on.
Loved this as a youth but can't get past the homophobia these days.

This is kind of exactly what I was expecting, a very 90's sounding East Coast/Wutang style hip hop record. Didn't really make much of an impression other than that; neither hated nor loved it.

Finally a hip hop album made it's way onto my list, and a good one to boot. Raekwon is in peak form here, proving that he's got what it takes even outside of Wu-Tang. There's a lot of rock solid stuff in here, but there's not many songs that stand out as a big hit in my book. It's not my favorite form of hip hop, but it's undeniably great work. The flow of the songs made it really easy to listen to. Loved the majority of the lyricism (minus the occasional gay slur), but the spoken word parts in between songs were a bit jarring and didn’t tie the songs together very well.

Great ride. Lots of strong imagery and storytelling. The rawness and extensive cast make this record one of the foundational wutang projects. I really loved the vibe of it. Honestly I was about to bail on this project before I saw Raekwon show up.
I need to give this one more listens to dive into the narrative they are building, but other that some solid bars and beats.

Totally disavowed gangsta rap as a youth, but this list is teaching me I might actually like it quite a lot with this and Ice Cube. I did like the odd Wu Tang track back then though so there were seeds. Continue to love all the old movie samples and general vibe of RZAs production. Obviously the swearing and guns and stuff is annoying, but man, Raekwon is irrepressible! Bit long, like. Also found Ice Cream to be a bit hella-lame. Wu-Gambinos absolutely bangs though.

One of my favourites of all time. Favourite track is hard enough, favourite verse is probably even harder. One of my favourite tracks is Knuckleheadz, and the three verses on that track are legit all in my top 25 verses ever. This is a top 3 album of the 90s for me, and honestly #1 on most days. Can NOT recommend it enough. It’s one of those records that deserves hundreds of listen
I love Wu-Tang Clan so already I am mad impressed by this. I have only ever heard 'Ice-Cream', but I am so excited to listen to the rest. 'Criminology' had such a good beat. Just make me wanna sway my head and get the fuck down. Everyone has such flow, it's so fucking good. I knew it was gonna be good from the start. The lyrics are so tightly packed and just wrap around the samples so well. Good shit. This is true gangsta rap.

A first generation Wu-Solo affair that plays like wu album itself, with Ghostface and the Rza prominent among a host of guests including Nas. This 'no-hook' song structure is what made wutang and MGDOOM so great, just a luscious beat looped and cut.

A pretty good rap album! Not really my favourite - I think Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is better than this solo record, but this was still very good. Slaps with that hardcore hip-hop flavour that Wu-Tang Clan are known for, with hard, heavy beats and aggressive lyrics, though beat-wise maybe a little more chilled than Enter the Wu-Tang. Either way it was a fun listen. Favourite: Wu-Gambinos

The lyricism on this album is fantastic but I just can't handle the talking over each other at the beginning of some of the songs, it makes my head hurt. Overall a great album to listen to all the way through.

Loved the mix between concept and lyrics here. This was fun to listen to and there were a few clear hits from the album (backed up by Spotify listens), like Crimonology and Ice Cream that were great to listen to.
It's ok it got old very and tedious quite quickly. Problem is with Hip Hop/rap I tend to like 2 maybe 3 songs on album and the rest is just ehh.
Also ran rap with low production and not in a good intentional lo-fi way, just in a “did it in our basement” way.
I think I would need a better background in Hip Hop to really enjoy this. I wish the skits were separate from the songs so i could skip them. Seemed really long.
I didn’t enjoy this one at all. First off, the lyrics. Half of them are essentially unintelligible. With hip-hop, I think being able to actually understand the words is semi important and for half the songs that wasn’t possible. And when you could understand the lyrics, they seemed very inane and superficial. But the worst part was the production. I couldn’t stand it. Way too compressed, which didn’t help the earlier lyrics issues, and very distracting. While there has been a few hip-hop albums on this list that I have enjoyed, this one was not one of them.

Absolute banger
Much better than expected. I enjoyed all the Kungfu samples and the samples in general. The vocals otherwise feel sort of lackluster, but the production is so high that this album is cohesive and keeps the attention.
Ugh. The content is vomitus and gross and stresses me out. But this is an artifact of its time and going back to it strikes me how seamlessly easy it was. Musically, I can get into some of the simple beats and samples. But alas, I won't ever listen to this again. Like I said, it's an artefact of its time and I see no reason to dig up the past.
Filling in missing reviews brought me to a trio of Wu-Tang solo albums, best discussed together in a 3-in-1 review. Already having reviewed “Return to the 36 Chambers” and GZA’s “Liquid Swords,” how do these other Wu-Tang efforts hold up? While these are regarded as solo albums, the members’ first solo albums were all produced by RZA and each feature many Wu-Tang members. They even battled each other for RZA’s best beats - these are solo but Wu-Tang was still very much a collective. But they each have their own style that distinguishes them. Method Man’s “Tical” is my favorite of four solo albums - he brings the right amount of whimsy and fun to some otherwise hard-edged music, and it’s more about getting high than violence. He also keeps things concise - it’s much shorter than the other two, which have a large collection of decent tracks without hits. Raekwon’s “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” is solid, but lacks the charm found on “Tical.” Ghostface Killah’s “Fishscale” is from later in his career - it's still filled with Wu-Tang cameos, but isn’t produced by RZA. I’m curious how it might compare to his solo debut, “Ironman” (which was RZA-produced). Ultimately, it doesn’t do it for me as much as the earlier Wu-Tang offerings. I do love how self-referential all the Wu-Tang members’ solo work is, though. RZA’s shaolin fixation still pops up, Method Man’s Tical concept (“taking into consideration all lives”) keeps popping up, Ghostface drops Iron Man references, and more - it’s all over, and it helps make it all feel very cohesive.
The best part of listening to this album was finding out that Raekwon and Ghostface Killah started the hip hop world’s obsession with Cristal. A restaurant they were at didn’t have the best wine in the building. They asked for the next best thing, got Cristal, and liked it. The rest is history. The album is not for me.
Unrelatable, boring hip hop that I'm wondering why it's on this list. The songs all have a sample that repeats on loop throughout. The beats are fine I guess, but the rappers are mediocre and the braindead banter in between songs is laughable, nomsayin? Lots of N-words and some gay slurs too.
I mentally tuned out even before pressing play on this record, after seeing that it was 1 hour and 13 minutes long. There are some interesting beats and rhythms throughout, but not enough to elevate this to anything above a 'meh.' It feels like an album that would only be good if you were already a hip-hop fan, or if you were someone who had some sort of nostalgia for Raekwon and the Wu-Tang Clan. I am neither of those, so I didn't care for this album much at all.

I had trouble with this one. The beats were too monotonous and while the flow was alright, it was not really a stand out. This seems like a weaker Wu side project. On the surface this is fine, but I wouldn't say this is a top 1001 album. It's just sort of meh. Also, a lot of these lyrics have not aged well. Which is kind of normal for 90s hip hop. But the homophobia and misogyny was rather pronounced here.
Best Song: Heaven & Hell. That soft backing vocals provides a nice contrast to the Wu. My favourite of Ghostface's verses from this album are on this track. Worst Song: Can It All Be So Simple. After such a dramatic intro, the song never lived up to the hype and the drama. Overall: This might as well be the Godfather of hip hop. Even when it feels dated in parts (namely the misogyny and homophobia), it's immediately obvious how it's influence spread and went on to drive how the genre changed in the decades that followed.

Downgraded Enter The Wu-Tang to 3 stars some 18 months ago and was not sure what to expect of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. But no, sounds - apart from its length - still as good as ever.
I liked this better than the Wu-Tang Clan. Very accessible hip-hop album, great samples too. Only quite a bit too long.
So long and just doesn’t stand out much.

Very much not my genre. But can still appreciate the skill and rhymes of ODB etc.
This was just not for me I guess. This wasn’t an enjoyable listen. It just felt boring. Most of the songs felt the same and blended into an hour and twenty minute slog fest. Trim half the songs to make it the best half and only forty minutes and I’d rate it higher.

Gangsta rap in general is pretty cringe. Nowadays I often associate it with 40+ year olds with alcohol and/or cigarette issues trying to act "tough". But that doesn't mean I avoid such territory. It's like the town's rough neighborhood, it definitely has some gems in it, but you gotta explore it with caution. Anyway, the best thing about this album is the production. The beats felt like they sit in the slick sweet spot between gangsta rap and Dr. Dre's G-funk beats. Fortunately, I'm one who focuses more on the sound than on the lyrics, so I enjoyed this album more than I cringed.

This one I’m still struggling with. At first I barely liked anything at all. But it’s slowly opening up layer by layer. And there’s a lot of greatness on this album! The sampling, the flow, the melodies. Very solid! 7,5 out of 10

Yet anther Gansta outfit with the usual unimaginative lyrics. There was some music in the background melody but I couldn't be bothered to subject myself to the last three tracks. Does this really count as music or is it just "street" to like it ? I don't ! 1* just to acknowledge that I listened.
Meh. Didn't hate it but not something that appeals particularly either.
Capturing the through-line from the ghetto gangster fantasy to the mafiosa fantasy in ridiculously adept flow has a niche but definite genius. This genre is not always my favorite (and arguably not "for me" anyway) but of what I've heard I think this is among the best.
I love Wu-Tang so I wanted to love this, but the best I could do was "like." It didn't flow like a Wu-Tang album, and while it had moments of sounding like Wu-Tang, it never achieved the same overall cohesion of sound. I didn't hate it, but I don't think I'll be listening to this again.
Raekwon is a ridiculously talented rapper (and so is the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan obviously). I wish he was working with more interesting lyrics and used fewer homophobic slurs but overall this album is pretty great.
Raekwon and the rest of Wu Tang have incredible style and skill, but this album is too long for lyrical content that amounts to "sell drugs, get money, fuck bitches." Other 90s rappers had more to say.
Takin me back! I’ve heard many of the tracks on this album, but never listened to it in its entirety. The beats and rhymes are awesome, and I really like the older, muffled sound of classic hip hop. This pounds in the car too!! Unfortunately I’m taking away a full star just because of all the dialog between songs. I don’t want to hear 90 seconds of people talking about killing n****s. Just get to the music! I like hiphop. I respect Raekwon and Tribe et al. But this was too too. Not for me.
There isn't a cliche this person doesn't hit. Person, not musician. This is dire.

Exceptionally pleasing to listen to, but not for an hour and fifteen minutes. Too repetitive. Kinda? changes it up towards the end. A pretty influential album. Great samples and lyrics. Enjoyed it. 4/5
Soild 90s rap album, just a bit long for me to fully enjoy. Would rather just listen to some Wu Tang.

This album wasn't great... I liked the beats and sometimes the flow, but every some is, like, three minutes longer than it needs to be. Also don't really like half of the songs starting with a minute of talking. My favourite song was Heaven and Hell.
A lot to try and take in in my first listen to this. I recognise quite a few bits that have been sampled in here which is cool. Some beats had me grooving but the "dramatic scenes" between tracks went over my head.
top tier rap album. last 4 songs are 🔥 (ice cream). really a 4 1/2

Respect this from a production standpoint (thanks RZA)- the western/kung fu samples are out in full force, and songs are woven together to keep a consistent energy throughout- but it’s ~20 mins longer than 36 Chambers and not as engaging to me. There’s definitely highlights, but “mafioso rap”, as Wikipedia described it, has generally been the hardest rap subgenre to get into for me. It's a Wu Tang Clan mob story, whats not to like? Tight lyrics, sparse and varied production, awesome feats. Wasn't sure whether I was in Staten Island or Stevenage waiting for the rail replacement bus today.
Why they be talkin this much?
Rap has been very well represented. Some have been better than others. I feel that the intro was maybe a bit difficult to get into. The beats are simple, but effective.
Lyrically dense and challenging. Definitely provides a dark portrait of inner city life coupled with some pretty engaging layered music. The samples enhance the mood and I really enjoyed Raekwon's delivery (as well as his guest rappers). Impressive album (even though the interludes do detract a bit for me).
One of the 3 best things made by Wu Tang or a solo member imho. Love it. criminology and verbal intercourse are absolutely brilliant.
Some great tunes here, but they're in the minority unfortunately. Should've been 20mins shorter

Lit and fun!
i do find it amusing that inside of one week, i get two solo albums of wu-tang clan members when i hadn't gotten them before. i do enjoy other wu-tang clan members showing up in multiple songs! overall, i found myself unimpressed. some of these beats were absolutely great. i definitely think this album went for too long; i don't know why it is nine minutes over an hour. i can't comment on the fact if it was that influential or meaningful of an album. i don't know if it deserves a spot here. i suspect it's uncreative but not bad. i've definitely heard actual garbage on this list, and raekwon's only built 4 cuban linx was not garbage.
Apparently this is a Wu Tang week for me; first GZA, and now Raekwon. It is going to be hard for me not to compare, but I will do my best. As I understood it, this album was meant to play out like a film. I am not sure if it was intentional or not, but a lot of the background music and soundscape is what reminded me most of a movie. At times, what was going on in the background reminded me of film noir or even a Bond film. I can see where this album is regarded highly in the hip hop community. The style here is much more progressive and stands the test of time from a sound perspective than albums from other hip hop acts of the early 90s; this album sounds a lot like the kind of hip hop music that would become prominent into the 2000s. I didn't hate this, nut really, as someone who already has a very light, mostly non-existent relationship with hip hop music, this album was just too long and just not really my thing.
Decent gangster/mafia rap
I actually enjoyed the album and thought it was great all around; definitely hear Wu Tang samples all around throughout, not to mention many collaborations with Ghostface. 8/10.
