Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Traditional Irish folk ballads throughout. Best song is The Lady Is A Tramp followed by Come All Ye (rolling minstrels.) Liked Liege And Lief well enough to rate the album at (2.4*s)
I didn't know there was British folk rock but here it is. Interesting use of a mandolin and fiddle throughout these British Isle shanties. The lead vocalist is perfect for these adaptations, her voice is very convincing, like she grew up on these medleys. I don't think they wrote any of the songs but it's a decent enough album. It's like the Byrds but make em Celtic. 2.45 for saying "elfin grey" in lyrics.
Some decent British (Irish?) folk music. I much preferred the more upbeat tunes with "Matty Groves" and the "Medley" taking top spots. I'm more into these otherwise "not my bag, baby" albums if theres some good storytelling and we get that here. Lead has a nice voice and and some solid string (guitar and violin) work. I wouldn't mind catching the band playing at a fest or brewery...2.3.
I'm getting a little burned out on folk music so I wasn't looking forward to this album. I came away from Fairport Convention relatively pleased. Liege and Lief is nothing amazing but it offered a minstrel-ish sound that is somewhat fun. The female vocals are solid and she is good at telling a compelling story in music form. I think in small doses I can enjoy this but don't need a full album of it. Matty Groves was a fun romp and was the track that stood out the most to me. While Fairport Convention exceeded my expectations I'll probably never listen to any of this again. I feel like I would bump this up a full point if I was listening to this at a Renaissance Fair. 2.21 stars
Like for real how many folk albums do we need they're not even good
This was alright. Not quite my cup of tea, but I did like gaelic sound to it. 2 stars.
It wasn’t bad but very folky and high-pitched. Would maybe listen again but unsure
wow. 🥱
not my cup of tea but flew by a bit better than some of the other folk and country offerings on here

Dorks welcoming me to the ren faire
I’m a folk fan normally so you’d think this would be right up my street but this just didn’t click for me for some reason
Dances the line between being okay and being completely annoying.
Nope. Not for me
This was a bit boring
Do I hate folk music? Maybe. Really got sick of this.
British folk. A lot of covers.
Didn’t like this one as much as the other one on this list. Too heavy handed.
2 twee 4 me.
nice folk album but not my thing
Mid
british folk. not as good as american folk, but it was ok-solid. 5/10
This is definitely not for me British folk is not my jam
208/1001 🌕🌗🌑🌑🌑
maybe this one caught me at a bad time, but i just don't care about it at all. i also realized i got caught with ANOTHER instance of non-disclosed bonus tracks, which sours the experience just a tad bit more
eh. to soft
No keskiaikafolkiahan tämä. Ihan ookoo. Välillä hauskaakin menojalka vipattaa -viulua. Mut joo idk kuulostaa minusta samalta kuin muukin keskiaikafolk…
Tämän keskiaikafantasian kuuntelee kertaalleen läpi ihan ilman sen suurempia murheita. Varasti välillä huomionkin.

Maybe a little too folky for me.
Interesting folk rock. Maybe worth another listen
I am familiar with Fairport convention. Heard a number of tracks in the past, in complications, on TV, radio, always liked their sound. But a whole album is too much.
Great voice! I've enjoyed music like this before but this one didn't do it for me.
If Hippies were hired to play at a Medieval Fair, this is probably the album they would make. Still, not anywhere near the bottom of the list
Better than some of the other similar albums on this list. Still don’t really think this is necessary listening. 2/5 Won’t listen again
Boring folk rock
Maybe it’s my mild anglophobia, but this is so far removed from anything I can imagine wanting to listen to for fun. I felt bad and knee-jerky after giving Pentangle a 1, so I’m making up for it here. This is actually 1.5, and the extra half star goes to Pentangle. They both still stink though.
This must've been a big deal for someone's grampa. There are some prog hippie church music vibes. To be clear, none of those descriptors are a bad thing in isolation and their combination is intriguing. This music is at its best to my ear when the rock is forward and they get more intricate with it. Unfortunately, the weirder prog moments are relatively few compared to some generally plodding applications of folk conventions which dilutes the impact. And yet, those moments do give opportunity for the vocalist to shine. This band is a conundrum and it got me thinking: To get into the headspace of just how this whole endeavor could've felt in 1969 in terms of excitement, maybe we should think of what the "problem space" or "surface area" of exploration would be if updated with more contemporary examples, maybe we should ask how would we wrap our minds around a Joanna Newsom x Mars Volta collab? To travel back in time, maybe then the music of Fairport Convention was that exciting, curious, and potentially dangerous.
"Liege and Lief" by Fairport Convention is often praised as a landmark in British folk-rock, but it falls short of expectations. The production feels dated, and Sandy Denny's vocals, though beautiful, lack emotional depth. Tracks like "Matty Groves" and "Tam Lin" seem more technically precise than heartfelt. Instrumental medleys disrupt the album’s flow and feel indulgent, while the blend of folk and rock elements often clashes rather than harmonizes. Overall, the album has moments of brilliance but lacks the cohesion and resonance expected from such a highly regarded work. It's a decent listen for genre enthusiasts but may not live up to the hype for others.
Okay three mediocre 60s albums in a row is starting to make me think the end of this list isn’t randomized and is just loaded with all of the lamest, most forgettable albums. This one was definitely worse than the last two because it was stereotypical folk instead of stereotypical psych/rock.
The pretentious falsetto turned up to 11! All enjoyability of this band from the last album disappeared. Most songs dragged on and the singers inflection is always the same annoying, try-hardedness to it. Musicality is still ok, but lacking from the last listen.
Bro WHY are there so many of these medieval albums on this generator. I must be missing something because there's no way enough people are obsessed with folk music like that to have so many folk albums on here. I'm lowkey getting ticked off because it's getting harder and harder for me to gaslight myself into enjoying them, so I'm giving this a 2 out of spite (though I suspect under less biased circumstances it would actually be a 3). After checking the global reviews I am apparently in the minority with this less than favourable opinion so my sincerest apologies for my previous statement. To be fair, I did actually somewhat enjoy Matty Groves, Medley: The Lark In The Morning (no singing yay), Crazy Man Michael, and maybe Farewell, Farewell as well, but peer pressure will not change my initial convictions
Had it’s moments but didn’t seem committed to them.
Medievel festival music. It’s not bad. 5.7/10
Fantasy chill
this album had some really promising moments, and then some moments that really wanted the album to be over... not something I am necessarily going to go back to I think. all in all, it seemed like some of the songs just rambled on with no real direction. 'quiet joys of brotherhood' just sorta dragged on as a closing track with them talking about still recording at the end and ultimately starting over. cool choice to leave that in i guess... but i was unsure of where this was going
Solid folk album. The more up tempo numbers were more my speed. The more ren faire-type ballads were, well, beautiful but boring. This felt very much like a product of its time. The folk scene was probably no bigger in the US than it was around this time. I enjoyed this album for what it was, and it was very good at being what it wanted to be. But I just wasn’t all that taken with most of it. And some tracks just kind of went on and on. I dunno. I started writing this thinking I’d give it three stars but I think I’m gonna give it two. It wasn’t bad at all, just mostly not my thing. Two stars. Standout tracks: Come All Ye, Medley: The Lark in the Morning, Tam Lin
I can't help but notice that just about all female folk singers of this era all sound the same. UK, Canada, US, doesn't matter; it's all the same. Anyway, outside of the ear-gritting singing, this wasn't spectacular. 5/10
A lot of lyrics lifted from Monty Python and the Holy Grail minstrel songs.
Some folk. Nice, but forgettable.
Oh good, more middling British 60's music.
Me aburrió un montón este disco. Género 'canción' tirando al folk y el country. Buena voz de la mina.
Confused because I thought I liked folk rock??
Not my cuo of tea
2.5/5
This was just a bit too much of the medieval vibe.
Enjoyed this album, Not every song certainly, but overall. It is definitely 1960s folk music. I really like the female vocalist’s sound.
It’s me, not you.
Starts off pretty fun but winds up being fairly redundant and boring as a whole album.
full thing not on spotify :(
Ugh. Folk. 2.5
C'est correct.
Not for me.
2/5. Not my cup of tea. Feels like I'd hear this at ren fair.
Nothing particularly remarkable. 2/5
Scots blue-grass hippie. Vocals sweet and melodic
Folk after folk was cool.
Not super into folk but not bad
Interesting vocals and musicianship. A bit too folksy for me tho
Tokan biisin kohdalla loppui motivaatio ja oli raskas tsemppaa loppuun asti. Laulajan soundi ei kohtaa millään tavalla taustojen kanssa, joten kirkkaasti kategoriaan ärsyttävä.
It's folk...What's there to like?
This was some of the most boring folk rock. It sounded like it could’ve been hymnals for the church. The voice the singer had was great, sure but after about 15 minutes it was pretty solemn and melancholic. Some people love that but it wasn’t for me. Overall the album was fine. I can see how it can be impactful and historical but overall it was boring. 4.9/10
What I would imagine Woodstock was like. Need lots of weed for this, maybe something stronger.
I'm sorry to go so hard as this essentially is just quite innocuous folk music but I could not STAND it I'm afraid. Genuinely was counting down until the last one was over. I've only ever resonated with a small amount of folk music, and this wasn't part of that. I think I find it repetitive but not in a good way, just no imagination! The folky stories cringe me out too
This just feels like 70s renditions of English folk songs. Overly earnest and generally uninteresting.
On the one hand, I really enjoy this album. The blend of British/Celtic sounds and Hutchings' majestic bass being the highlights. On the other hand, it took me a week to finish because I found myself so unengaged by it. Maybe I'll come back to it in a few years and like it more than I have, but as of now I can't give it more love.
Folky songs about sailors and queens.
Not my bag... the lead singer's voice is too whiney for me.
Solid, though not great.
Not my cup of tea :)
It was an older style with a folky sound. Nothing that blew me away.
British folk rock. Fairport Convention is credited with being one of the first groups to combine traditional English themes with 'modern' instrumentation. The union between fiddle and electric guitar was considered groundbreaking for the time. There are two very different types of music in this album. "Matty Groves" and "Medley: The Lark In The Morning" are jaunty tunes which will make anyone want to dance on the hard floor in a barn. The rest of the songs are slow, folk rock ballads. While the fiddle and electric guitar really bring the sound up, Sandy Denny's exposed and protracted warbles are just too much.
Felt very generic for me. Likely because I don’t have the familiarity with the genre. Lead singer’s voice was technically solid, but sounded like a parody of itself. When she talked at the end I liked her natural voice better. I thought of yodeling throughout. The music itself sounded like b real Western background music.
Melko tylsää folkkia, en jaksanut montakaan kappaletta kuunnella loppuun saakka
This one is okay. Some of their other albums I prefer to this. I don't have a lot to say about it. The vocals are so unique for FC.
Is 'Fairport Convention' code for renaissance fair? I think it is. I feel like I should be hot, smelly and dirtry while eating a turkey leg and yelling "wench, go fetch me my lute."
not my thing
I don’t know. I’m not really resonating with this. Never had an interest back in the day. There are better bands with this sound. How is this special? Not impressed at all. The mix is annoying af. This is just more whiteboy bullshit.
This is fine, not something I’d expect to listen to again, but I can’t see myself listening to the full 55 minutes.
I didn't really like this. I know folk is an amazing art form and the passing down of trad songs is important but this just passed me by.
CBA
More boring British hippie dippy tripe from this sad sack lot. The album cover is an artless assault on my eyes too.
This was a really hard one for me to get through. Really strongly disliked the vocals, the lyrics, and the instrumentation. I was surprised how electrified the sound was versus the overall Ren Faire vibes. Hard to parse. Very hard to parse.
The opening song does this album a disservice. Not that I particularly like the rest of the album, but I really hated the opening song.
2.5
Didn't do much for me, but it was fine.
Sandy Denny is amazing and the musicianship is great, but just not something I would sit around and listen to.
I'm guessing this would be pretty dope if I liked British folk rock, but I don't.
Was somewhat decent background music. But not really my thing.
I don't think I think this album. Just doesn't tickle my fancy.
Early thoughts: An interesting sound, about 3 tracks in. Not really my vibe unfortunately. Final thoughts: Didn't end up finishing album, may get back to it
this was just ok. however, i can’t help but think how bands like this helped bridge the gap from ethnic folk music to modern day folk rock/punk hybrid bands like flogging molly and dropkick murphys.
This had its moments for sure but it also had…..its moments. Why did I HAVE to listen to this?
It was just there. I felt nothing. It's actually a bit hard to rate something that leaves neither a positive or negative impression.
Not as horrible as some other Folk I've heard. Still I'm not a fan. 2.5/5
This was a snoozefest.
Godawful shite, just like the people who like this, in their raggedy jumpers and pints of cider with horse piss covered straw sticking out of it - and that's just the ladies
Late 60s folk rock sound but not enough snap
Not my bag but a pleasant sound.
I thought I would be more interested in an album like this, but the main thing i would say is that i just cant get into it. It's certainly not actively bad or anything remotely like that, it just doesn't hold my interest in any way. Just not my thing I think the first track is fine, the rest of the tracks are fine. But overall, i just couldn't get into it. Can't imagine that I'd ever revisit it. 2/5
more british folk blah blah blah
Its not for me, but I see how this is good for its genre
Matty Groves was an excellent song, especially the psychedelic jam to close it out. The rest of the album was a little too Renaissance fair for me. 2 quill pens out of 5, for writing bards and tales of yore. 🪶🪶
Unglaublich langweilig
I'm not a fan of folk music, but I acknowledge that Fairport Convention is one of the pre-eminent folk bands. Lead vocalist Sandy Denny's voice is the main draw here and she indeed has a lovely voice. However, I really couldn't get into this and it simply did not resonate with me.
Kinda bored me a lil bit
Boring
Such low energy. Not in a good way. Usually into folk rock
5.5/10 brit folk, rien de spécial. bruit de fond principalement
ну вообще не моё))
Boring folk music is fairly boring.
The production and song-crafting was good, but it was pretty corny and boring.
Helt ok
i don't think i get it
If you like folk songs and songs that tell a story are your thing, you might like this album. That being said, I'm not the biggest fan of folk music and this was a bit dry to me and just not my thing. The singer's voice is beautiful and it has fine instrumentation, though. I also normally love songs that tell a story, but the ones told by the songs on this album are just boring, in my opinion. I didn't care for their Shakespearean tales of primarily lovers trysts gone awry, and a fan of this "old English" of which they use, I am not. Like Yoda, the singer speaks. Hmm, yes.
Not sure how this album made anyone's top list of anything.
Jää aika köykäiseksi tämäkin. Kaipais jotain, en nyt osaa perustella. 2/5
It wasn’t horrible to listen to but it’s not exactly full of returners. Didn’t hate it didn’t love it. While at times I loved the singers voice this didn’t have enough to it worth a 3. Marty Groves and Tam Lin went hard though
I’d rather listen to Plantasia 13.21 times, but I don’t have that choice. Already know this album, eye roll. Yeah, I typed out eye roll, go f*** yourself. Textbook 3. Sounds good enough, but makes me feel nothing. Absolutely nothing. If this album were a psychiatrist, it’d be out of a job. Singer’s voice sounds identical to that of Carole King. Absolutely identical. If those two were twins, they’d be in a job. Honestly, I’m going down to a 2. I found myself waiting for it to end, which is indicative of a score lower than 3. Sorry fake Carole, eat sh**!
Zzz
This was kind of boring for me. It wasn't bad, but I was waiting for it to end the whole time. It was a bit too folky for my tastes. Don't really know what else to say. My favourite song was Matty Groves.
Nah not my thing
I am not a fan of folk/country music, though this album felt like a movie soundtrack of a country-themed movie haha. It's been a nice experience listening to a genre I'm usually not into.
Vecchio? Vecchio
nah
Liked some of it (Matty Groves), some was not so good.
Not a fan. 4/10
1.5 I really didn’t care for a lot of this one. It’s like psychedelic country with a yodeling singer. I’m not a lyric person so maybe they were saying some cool stuff but musically this did not hit for me. The build up on Matty Groves was really neat to hear though. Favorites: Come All Ye, Matty Groves
Not my kind of music.
Could not get into it at all. Made it about 3 songs and gave up.
2.5
I'm sure there are people who love this, and maybe it's a great example of the genre. It's just not my favorite style of music and didn't really do anything to persuade me to engage more with it.
Jefferson Airplane but British, pretty good but kind of boring at times, not my style.
Just boring
nah
It was a short album. It was very folksy. I did not care for it.
Liege And Lief is very much styled to sound like it's from ye olde times, which is a good choice because the singer's voice is perfect for it; haunting but charming and carries some otherwise very ordinary compositions along to something that's listenable but not really that substantial. 2/5, okay, nothing more.
It was fine. Kinda boring. But fine.
Meh
I like some folk music but this didn't really grab my attention or pull my interest, it was just there. Never heard of this band before. Just meh overall
This is the fourth album from British folk rock band Fairport Convention. It is claimed to be the first British folk rock album, and this popularity allowed the band to continue making music for this genre. The music was beautiful and relaxing, but folk is not my vibe. Fans of folk rock or British music will love this album.
Odd mix of folk music and prog rock
I didn't enjoy this one as much as Unhalfbricking
fairport convention 🤝 fiddle this was fine! i admired the storytelling aspect of their songs. their folk sound was pleasant. it really was an all around nice listen, but it just didn't do much for me.
Love the instruments. But not a big fan of the vocals, for some reason. Not a big fan of the repetitive formula, either. Imagine the "Free Bird" solo but the first couple of riffs are looped over and over again. It felt like that. Almost epic at first, then it quickly became annoying. I can see why it's a must listen. But I won't pretend that I enjoyed it. It's folk rock after all.
Hmm. Folk isn't, and after this remains not, a genre that I find lovable. It all feels so mannered. I get that they're 'doing a Dylan' and making it electric and all that, but I grew up in a quiet corner of Kent, and by my youth, every second pub band was this... Undeniably a talented lot, and Matty Groves is ace. But a whole album of this was a bit much to digest for me.
Groovy. 2½ ✨
Sounds like a folk album
I'm not a fan of folk-rock, this hasn't changed my mind
The name rings a bit of a bell but i've definitely never heard before. I don't mind some folk but this isn't really for me.
I kept imagining Celtic hippies, like a mix of Jefferson Aeroplane and Clannad. Interesting, but not currently interested.
nope
I felt like I was unwillingly transported to middle England to hear some depressing tales. They say the weed wasn't strong in the 60s, but this proves otherwise.
Without sounding too dismissive this album sounds incredibly beardy. Folk music obviously has its place and this is a way of updating songs written in the 1600's but listening to it in 2021 you can almost hear the scratchy jumpers and people drinking cider that was in some guy's shed using a bin.
I like the vocal - a real Allison Krause-y thing going on. I was also sucked in by some of the cool bass lines in a few of these songs. Overall, really great musicianship. They did the Irish folk, story-telling thing about as well as you can do it. It's just not really for me. I had a lot of trouble getting into it.
Dare I say it's too folky? I had never heard of them and did enjoy parts, but I'm not buying this as a must-hear album.
This feels like somewhat similar to Irish music with British lyrics. I can't get behind this tomfoolery
This is for someone, but not for me.
Not completely un-likeable, but definitely not my thing. I like a lot of folk and this has some good grooves and chilled bits, but it's a bit TOO folk. It sounds like Maypoles and dancing in circles on LSD.
Just not my cup of tea
missed most of it. not awful
Eh
teilweise netter Woodstock, Hippie, Folk, teilweise echt nerviges Ethno-Eso-Gesäusel
Pleasant to listen to. Unlikely to return to it.
Given the release year (1969), I can hear how this album influenced others that followed. It's good music, sung and played well, and a good representation of the style. Not one I'll listen to again. Nothing against it; it's a style I've heard done so many times in so many ways that due to the passage of time it's too hard for this album to stand out for me.
Very dreary, very same-ish sounding tracks. Needed some male voices added at times
Not great, psychedelic folk all blends into each other
folky, hippyish, a little too oversung
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Come All Ye, Medley: The Lark In The Morning, Tam Lin Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: If I heard this for the first time at a Medieval Ages themed section of an amusement park I would be bobbing my head and milling rocking on every block. That being said, these songs wear out their welcome pretty quickly seeing as they use the same vocal inflections and melodies over and over. It's fine. The songs I like are at an average of high 3 stars, but the rest are easy skips so I'll give this a high two.
Did not like at all. Can see who they might have influenced.
Meh. Sorry Jenni
Nice enough but not really my vibe
Not my cup of tea. Wasn't really a fan but I can see why people would be interested in something like this. Interesting sounds and music but not what I enjoy listening too.
Perfectly fine light background music for when I’m writing a script with a fantasy element. It’s a pretty narrow window of opportunity, but Fairport Convention crawled right in and kept it propped open with a lute.
This is a kind of hippies-taking-themselves-to-seriously brand of music that doesn't appeal to me. I was reading about them and their nickname was "The British Jefferson Airplane" - that kind of sums it up for me.
for folks sake
Maybe I need another listen but this felt like it didn't go ANYWHERE. Snoooooze.
Great at first, but the arrangements tend to grow a bit stale after 4-5 minutes of repetition
eh.
Eh, this one was fine I guess. More late-60s era pop rock.
not my bag
dafaq is this werid shit . not really feeling it
I like the Celtic influences, but man does this entire thing feel very bland and one-note. Zoned out kind of hard, despite trying to keep with it. Favorite tracks: "Come All Ye", "Matty Groves"
1969. Key Songs: Matty Groves, Farewell Farewell
Absolutely awful have no idea why it’s even on the list
Boring celtic singing
honk shoo
I fell asleep halfway through.
Toss
This is sweet and easy listening irish folk but not really a top anything.
This was tough, not my thing at all. found it gruelling to listen to. I'm sure this is someone's cup of tea somewhere.
Ugh
This album just made me mad. It is terribly boring.
This convention sucks
Nothing like an album that makes you want to steer your bike into oncoming traffic
1. come - 1 2. rey - 2 3. matty - 1 4. fareuuell - 1 5. dezerter - 1 6. lark - 2 7. tam - 1 8. michael - 1 9. patrick - 2 10. quiet - 2
boo
I didn’t really enjoy Unhalfbricking by Fairport Convention when I reviewed it earlier in this challenge. I usually give 60s British folk a wide berth, but I was interested to see what Liege & Lief would be like today. Unfortunately, this one isn’t really for me either. It’s very whimsical and often feels like the soundtrack to Robin Hood. The singer has a lovely voice and there is some great musicianship throughout, but it’s not an album I can truly get into. Favourite tracks: I quite enjoyed the instrumental medley The Lark in the Morning. It was lively and played at a great pace. I actually listened to it two or three times today. Least favourite tracks: Many of the songs blend into what feels like folk nothingness to me. Overall, I struggled to enjoy this album. Album artwork: When I think of Fairport Convention, this is the cover that comes to mind. It’s probably their most recognisable image.
not my cuppa
First listen
Not my scene.
no clue what this is.
Quite annoying - I don’t mind folk but found this a little hard work.’
pretty much this album really pissed me off. It’s the reason that I have to take a three month hiatus from 1001 albums. I’ve decided to come back and this album is the demon that I have to face. I’m sure there is something cool in it somewhere … but I don’t like it. I think it’s bad. I think it’s boring. I feel like I’m at the tavern (derogatory). maybe one day I will be able to appreciate fairport convention the same way the UK did in the late 60s when it was number 17 for 15 weeks straight. I literally can’t even make it through it. I think I might not give it a one because there is one song that I thought was kind of cool and I’m being a little bitch about it but mostly hate this album. ok no i decided im giving it a 1
I enjoyed the first track and this raised my expectations. The rest truly annoyed me. In fact, it put me in a bad mood for hours after.
I couldn’t wait for this to end. It’s rambling pagan babble with little notable melody.
seems like just filler these days.
not for me
Only got a few tracks in, didn’t love this one
Dated hippy shite. I can almost smell the flowers in their hair and picture them all sitting cross legged in a circle in some weird log cabin when they recorded this. No no no.
Sorry this one is a dnf for me, but I bet these guys are a riot at the RenFair
This band sucked so Mumford & Sons could blow
I tried. I seriously did. I got each song started and couldn’t hang on to a single one. If I closed my eyes and listened I would swear this was the prequel to Sheryl Crow. I’ve definitely heard worse, but this is gonna be a no for me, dawg.
I learned it pays to read the wiki, the original album is only 8 songs, the rest of the songs on spotify were bonus tracks on the cd reissue. Why does this matter.....I couldn't do it anymore... I needed to stop but didn't want to quit. It was like the 25th mile of a marathon, and I was out of gas. What a relief to learn I was actually 3 songs past the finish line and could turn it off. Phew! Cheesy Renaissance Fair music. Not for me.
I saw the reviews comparing this to Ren Faire music and thought, "Toss a Coin to Your Witcher? Let's go!" To my dismay, this was *not* Ren Faire music as I understood it. I would describe it more like Celtic Honkytonk or perhaps the first of the bardcore. Note that I didn't say best because I think others have improved on this format since. There's usually no chorus, just one lilting vocal melody plus an instrumental interlude, repeated ad nauseum. They make 4-minute songs feel like 12 minutes because there's no hook, nothing familiar to latch on or look forward to. It feels much more akin to poetry with musical breaks than it is music as we know it today. Maybe fine to listen to in a tavern when you're weary from long travels on the the muddy road, but these days more evolved options exist. I'm keeping an open mind, but if this is what all British Folk music is, then it is absolutely, unequivocally not for me.
não me pegou muito, mas me diverti; passou uma vibe meio "angelical" e religiosa que me lembrou até a estética de um mantra... não prestei atenção nas letras btw
Folk is not really my thing and this album didn't turn me around. This tough for me to get through.
Nope
Hippie movement is over!!!
This is the kind of music that tempts me to skip an album. But I didn’t! Listened to the whole Ren faire type thing. I’m happy for the people that like this. I will never understand how this strike got SO popular in the late 1960s. Drugs make you want to go back in time?
Boring, uninspired. The vocalist's voice reminds me of Beto Guedes, which I like a lot, but it's not captivating.
everyday i discover how much more i dislike folk
Not as exciting as Pentangle. The few songs I have tried to listen were repetitive, without the jazzy touch I actually liked in Pentagle. Totally forgettable but not that bad comparing to Dylan.
Hated this - felt like I was at a wedding feast in Sherwood Forest.
Medieval fiddle-dee-di is not for me.
Yeah this is folk. Not the first time either. So I don't think excluding genres from this actually worked. This is really not for me.
A British folk-rock album only a Brit could like. I'm a fan of Dungeon Synth stuff, which feels vaguely relevant here, but maybe I like dungeon synth because nobody sings in dungeon synth and that's the root of my dissatisfaction with this weird-in-a-bad-way album.
I was expecting more folk, but got a bit more rock, which was a bit of a surprise, but this just isn't my thing. The album feels ambitious and well performed and produced. Just not something I will be returning to.
Hippy fireside songs at a medieval tavern.
An hour of my time I'm never getting back
1 star. 1 good song.
Crazy Man Michael? More like Crazy Man Dave cause this drove me crazy. This sucked.
Folk, you can clearly hear that it has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with Bob Dylan. I almost only listen to the fiddle and that is almost an exclusion criterion for me. I was never a big folk fan, with a few exceptions, but that is not my music, absolutely not.
this can folk off, irritating voice and boring melodies
Why are these folk rocks so unappealing? It's boring and that's all I have to say. The sounds are so cliche, the lyrics are so pale, and the harmonies are also just so uninteresting. 2 is the best I can give. The embodiment of BORDOM. How can anyone stand this?
Nope. I couldnt get through this album. Its generic 60s nonsensical shit. 1/5
not my thing
Oh so you invented British folk-rock. Well at least I know who to slap now.
not mid. just bad.
I’m pretty certain at this point that I don’t like folk music. This was an absolute slog for me to get through. Rating: 1
This one made it to my 1001 mediocre albums picked out of a 2nd hand store. To classify this as any sort of “Rock” is blasphemy.
didn't like it.
ok folk album great music but not really a fan of the lead singer
Not for me
This is really not my style of music. We will see how it goes and if I can find any hidden gems I would have never heard because of the genre. I thought it was country but it's listed as folk. Later on in the record it feels like world/chanting at times. Quite far out of my comfort zone.
I usually like this kind of music. But this one didn't land for me.
Not for me
Not my jam. Could not get through it.
I’ve heard Folk music all my life and I really enjoy it but this album was a struggle to get through. Obviously 60s British Folk Rock is different from what we have here in the Appalachians, but still, not much held my interest. Bright spots were Farewell, Farewell and Tam Lin for me, everything else was forgettable.

If I were ever to be detained at guantanamo bay this is the album they could use to torture me.
I understand all the misgivings about the content and the lyrics. However, unlike some of the rap that has been shortlisted, at least this album deserves to be on the list. It’s bond a generation I am going to give it a higher star rating because at least it is a seminal album.
folk off you bunch of nonces.
When will i get a good album
Do NOT like her voice. Folk
At first listen: Nope! Tried to hear more... Nope!
Encapsulates everything I hate about folk music. Why can't I choose zero stars.
I no longer beLiege and Lief after love.
and lieve
Trash
Folk rock garbage. Reminded me of that family guy episode where Peter and Lois get super high and make folk music and in their high minds it sounds awesome but to everyone else it’s terrible.
Ren Fayre Jam Band
Not into this at all, but it did blend into the background and wasn't impossible to get through.
This is one convention I won't be attending. I just can't get into this, but I won't bash because it's music. Just not music I enjoy. Hoping this is last time we hear from Fairport. 1
Goodness me. How did this make it to the list?
Nope
Nope
This is like if jefferson airplane wrought all the songs in lord of the rings
Fucking terrible. 1969, folk music, just doesn't get any worse for me. 1/5.
Hot garbage
Not good.
I can Almist hear the medevil garb that she's wearing.
Ну такое, совсем не моё
Eh musica de festival medieval com gordo nerd usando armadura e espada de papelao, falando M'lady e ficando bebado em hidromel
Hippie stuff just does nothing for me.
oh god, it's a double album? no, sounds like something that plays while you're getting a massage, and you wish they'd skip it
Classic
