Reviews (page 4 of 7)
much shorter than the other mudhoney album, im working rn and I didn't really process listening to this.
The instrumentals I enjoyed. A few of the vocal songs as well. Maybe when I was in my 20s, I would have thought this was aMAZing. But 30 some odd years later, it just feels sloppy to me. Bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam of the same era had some pretty good melodies to counter the wall of crunch they were putting out. I just didn't feel that with this band. The album was recorded on low-quality tape via an 8-track desk, which really shows you the sound and lack of clarity (for me at least). I think there is a lot of potential here, but there just needed to be... something more. Top tracks: "Generation Genocide", "Let It Slide", "Into the Drink", "Who You Drivin' Now?"
I really enjoyed their debut EP Superfuzz Bigmuff but this full length album isn't as good. Did Mudhoney really need two albums? Given that the 1,001 list doesn't usually choose EPs then why did they go with the EP and then this album? Anyway, Mudhoney is still super grungy on this album but it just doesn't hang together or have the same melody of their EP. Plus there are other super grungy pioneers like the Melvins that could use a spot on this list. If I had to pick, I'd say I liked Let It Slide, Something So Clear, Into the Drink, Broken Hands, Shoot the Moon, Fuzzgun 91, and Pokin Around. That's half the album so it's not without quality, but like I said it feels like individual pieces of glory not a collective whole.
The opening track sounded like I was about to hear some late 60s heavy psychedelia...too bad the rest of the album didn't follow that sound. The rest sounds like a garage band demo. Slacker singing, fuzz guitars. I can acknowledge that these guys were ahead of the curve (and I liked Superfuzz Bigmuff), but It's no surprise these guys didn't make it huge. I'd call it a 2.5 and I'll round up since at least it's mostly listenable. Favorite tracks: Who You Drivin' Now (actually a fun track unlike most of the others), Move Out.
This is one of the best album names I've ever heard. Unfortunuately, I'm a few songs in and I'm having a hard time connecting to the vocals. I feel like I'm listening to old Green Day but with worse singing. Every song has some nice 90s sounding punk/rock guitar/drums. "Something So Clear" has sweet riffs. "Into the Drink" is a cool song. I like the drums and the guitar part. "Who You Drivin' Now" has got me moving. They are absolutely shredding on "Fuzzgun '91". Loving the harmonica on "Pokin' Around". "Pokin' Around" is also going super hard. I love it, abut the vocals are only OK. These kinds of albums are tough for me. I'm not as punk as I wish I was, and I have a hard time enjoying the vocals when they're a little flat like this. It sounds too much like someone just yelling instead of trying to hit any notes. It rocks pretty hard though. 6/10
3/5. Loud and heavy, I did enjoy the aesthetic but many of the songs were forgettable. 90's grunge is fun to listen to but it does need to be unique as it can easily fall into loud to be loud. Thankfully, there are melodies and slower songs on here mixed in. It definitely leans pop a few times as well. Overall, it was good but not great. Best Song: Let It Slide, Fuzzgun '91, Into The Drink
this album really felt like it filled in a gap in the spectrum between bands that were more like sonic youth and bands that would become the more straightforward grunge sound. i liked the former more than the latter, but all around it was enjoyable and i ended up re-listening to some of it.
a lot of the times you come across something that everyone gushes about because it's foundational to a lot of stuff that came after and is better, but this is still pretty good in its own right
i listened to this directly off of the 3.5 hour Ella Fitzgerald gauntlet, and therefor viewed it in an incredibly generous light
I’ll be honest, after previously hearing Superfuzz Migmuff and not liking that at all, I had low expectations for this album today. Fortunately, it was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. That’s not to say that I loved it either, but it definitely didn’t sound as messy as the previously mentioned album. There is a fine line between music sounding raw (which I tend to like) and rough, and this fortunately lands on the former side. Still not an album I’ll be seeking out again, but it was a decently fun listen.
Not all alternative music from the 90s sounded like it came from Seattle - case in point, Mudhoney offers an album that sounds like it came out of the 70s punk rock era and refreshes 90s Alt. 3/5
Not sure I've ever listen to 'grunge' before, but I constantly found myself bopping to some tunes and turning the volume up or down on others. It was fun, exciting, and full of emotion. I can understand why this was so popular in the 90s during the anti movement. It's added to my playlist.
Good early grunge album.
This was OK. Pretty harmless. I wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio, but I wouldn't choose to listen to it either.
It was ok. Pokin' around sounded a bit like a rip off of Dancing with myself - except it had harmonicas? Death to harmonicas
I find this a frustrating listen because there are glimpses in there of something I could love but it is obscured by the production style. 3.5 rounding down
You can tell this was influential for grunge, and you can also see why this didn't blow up like some other grunge bands did.
I was quite surprised because the first few songs were not as grungy as I expected, but then from thorn it switched and became a pretty standard grunge album. It was okay. A few songs stood out, but for the most part it was pretty generically grunge. 3.5 stars
Good noise. Grunge isnt super distinct to me but it was enjoyable
Tykkäsin enemmän skeitti punkki henkisistä kappaleista. Muut kappaleet oli jotenkin taas turhaan laahaavia ja mitäänsanomattomia. Parani loppua päin, positiivinen maku jäi kuitenkin. Parhaat: Thorn, Shoot The Moon, Pokin' Around, Don't Fade IV
Pretty neutral for me, should be right up my alley though Will I listen to again: 44%
Just not a massive grunge man. It was decent enough. But nothing really jumped at me.
I like the sound, but as an album I wasn't very entertained
Pretty good for Grunge but I do hope The Wipers are on this list instead of the middle of the road 90s grunge that keeps popping up.
3.5/5
6/10 Favorite Tracks: Let It Slide, Good Enough, Shoot The Moon Least Favorite Tracks: Don't Fade IV, Who You Drivin Now, Fuzzgun 91', Pokin Around
This was pretty fun but didn't leave too much of an impression on me beyond "good". I think my issue with grunge is barring the big four, there isn't much I reach out for purely withing the genre save maybe Failure and Hole. This did enough to differentiate itself from those bands but still, I think I'll take those.
This was totally alright but don't think it made a lasting impact tbh
I really thought I would hate this but I did not... There's something here for me
Pretty good rock album. Maybe it's due to hearing it in today's music environment instead of when it came out almost 25 years ago, but I wouldn't say it's more special than that. It would be interesting to hear it in context of the music that was out around the same time when this style of rock was starting to take off; probably would feel much more fresh after a decade of 80s radio rock than listening to it in the 2020s. That's probably my biggest critique of the album, since as a whole it's solid. Overall: 3/5
Never listened to this band, even though I would have thought I would have given when they were popular. This was generally pretty good. Not a huge grunge fan but there was some variety here.
I didn’t hate it as much as the other one but it felt like a poor man’s nirvana
Feeling more rocky
Early 90s Seattle bands make me all warm and fuzzy. Not the greatest album as a whole but I enjoyed it.
Come pokin’ around with that harmonica anytime
reasonable grunge
I bet this band is a lot of fun live and I did enjoy parts of this album, but probably won't revisit
gave this a very casual listen during work so i feel guilty even rating this but the vibes felt like a 3!
My brain is tuned to love all 90s rock that sounds like this. The unfortunate truth of mudhoney is that they’re good, just not as good as every other band from Seattle at the time, and when you have Soundgarden why do you need mudhoney? It is a great grunge album. Superfuzz Bigmuff is stronger, hoping it’s on the list too.
I'm glad we got a change of pace in this exercise, but there are way more bands that do grunge and alt rock better. I know this band inspired many others, but this one just doesn't hit much for me. I'm sure their concerts were great though. Good songs: Don't Fave IV Something so Clear Into the Drink Pokin Around
I’m not so sure a purveyor of big dumb rock and roll named Mudhoney is qualified to make such sweeping declarations on who does and does not deserve fudge.
This album is very 90s and very grunge—raw, fuzzy, and rough in that lo-fi, garage-band-on-a-budget way. It definitely has its moments (Let It Slide and Something So Clear come to mind), and there’s a charm to the whole chaotic mess, but it never really stands out from the pack. Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were bringing a deeper heaviness and stronger musicality to the scene, and next to that, Mudhoney’s punk-rooted style feels more like a blur of energy than something you want to sit with. Still, I get why it’s in the 1001 book—it captures a specific moment in grunge’s evolution and feels very honest to what the genre was before it broke big. That said, I’ve always leaned more toward the melodic or metal-influenced side of grunge, and Mudhoney's more scrappy, punk-leaning take just doesn’t stick with me as much. It’s fine—somewhere in the middle for me.
point0.
Very fun, definitely need to be in the mood for the drunken sloppy vocals (which I am sometimes and sometimes not). Would revisit, though not likely high on the list.
Pretty average grunge-y rock
Pretty solid, actually felt like this lifted far above the ‘influential’ tag that everyone on here is using as an insult. Felt more like modern rock songwriting than 90s grunge in a way. Rating: 3.5
Moments of brilliance but never gets to the heights of Pearl Jam or Nirvana 3.4
I missed Mudhoney during the grunge era. They sound good. Energetic, fast drums and guitar. Must have been fun back in the day, a little too hectic for me now.
Du sous-Nirvana, avec quelques trucs cools, et quelques trucs un peu pourris.
Uneventful but ok. We didn't notice when it finished.
decent punky grunge
I enjoy the energy, production, and style on this album. The vocals and instrumentation are fairly average. Songwriting isn’t great. Arrangement is bad. The middle, oddly enough, is where this thing really shined, for me. “Broken Hands” and “Who You Drivin’ Now?” are my favorites. Not very much range. The whole thing suffers from a bit of creative burnout in my most pretentious of opinions. I like all of these songs individually, but all at once is a bit daunting. Let’s go Mudhoney! 3/5
3.5
not crazy about this. i think it’s good, but not great, redeems itself as it goes on from a two to a three
More muted and even than Superfuzz Bigmuff. Probably not as memorable, but a stronger collection more suited to my taste. Best song: Into the Drink
#516. I mean, it's pretty decent, but it's unlikely it'll be one I remember in a few month's time. 3/5: solid
Decent
Leif LOVED it. So an extra star for him
Uneven hard rock album. Strong baselines. Some songs are very listenable, others, not so much. I personally don’t find the sound of feedback very musical, but to each their own.
This wasn't bad, just mostly fell into the background. Solid album, love the dual guitars, just not enough of it grabbed me
Very 90s. Very grunge. It was fine and definitely had solid moments. But Soundgarden and Alice In Chains do it better. Still, I get why this made the book.
The birth of grunge was not a pretty place.
Mocne 3.
There is nothing exceptional about this album but in kind of positive way. I had fun and I won't remember it just the way I like it.
I remember listening to a Mudhoney album way back in the day because a lot of the big bands of the time touted them as an influence. I wasn't overly impressed then, and I'm not overly impressed now. It's ok. More punk than anything. It lacks the hooks and songwriting that propelled better bands to stardom just after this was released.
Some nice experimental guitar riffs, but the album is not particularly awesome.
Descent album but a little monotonous. Chris says they only have one mood.
Favorite Track: Good Enough
It was fine, just fine.
Easy going listening. Can rock out or chill out
Not sure this is entirely grunge but it's got that frenzied, energetic, garage punk thing going for it and I'm certainly down with that.
This is one of those special albums right there on the cusp of something greater. While Nevermind would be the album that changed the world just a couple months later, without Mudhoney and Surfer Rosa by the Pixies, you don't have it at all. This is the purest look at what the folk up in Seattle were cooking at the tail end of the 80's glam rock and hair metal overindulgence and taking a page from the books of punk and alternative rock that fell right under the periphery. This is exactly the album that comes to mind when people want to talk about the whole Sub pop grunge thing.
There were some good tunes in here, I liked "Poking Around". I recognized the name Mudhoney and I'm sure I've heard some of their songs before, but this album was all new to me.
This was ok in a grunge sort of way, but didn’t really stand out for me as memorable in any way.
Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge is the second studio album from Mudhoney, and the last before they made the jump to major label releases. Mudhoney made garage punk, or grunge, and of the Seattle bands that became famous in that wave, they may be the closest to punk. These are edgy, guitar and bass driven songs, with a raw energy that some of their more famous counterparts lost in production. This album fits somewhere in between Nirvana and Husker Du...
Made-up fact: Placed #3 in the 1991 Dirtiest Guitar Competition as a direct result of this album.
Enjoyed this, more good grunge from the Mudhoney lads! This one probably doesn't need to be on the 1001 list, given that Superfuzz Bigmuff is so great!
A good album by a band that helped create the grunge sound. I prefer Dinosaur Jr over Mudhoney but it was still a solid album.
Felt like a bunch of jam sessions but it was ok
Neloše. Grunge punk, 5 piva i da vidiš
Another gap in my listening c.v. Surprised me just how good some of this is. Demands a re-listen.
Really good, but nothing particularly stood out to me aside from Broken Hands.
good Mudhoney album, but earlier ones like Superfuzz Big Muff are better.
It's okay, sounded like anything you'd hear in a teens room in the 90's
Leo que es uno de los primeros discos de grunge y que por ello es tremendamente influyente. A mí me cansó un poco. Tiene algunas buenas canciones pero no creo volver a escucharlo nunca.
This was pretty gooood. i liked it. It is a little long, but I just like the genre, so it wasn't a big deal. Still, It's only gonna be a stroong 3
Rockin’ and messy
just very mid. nothing really stood out compared to their debut.
Early to mid 90s era is my comfort food of music, so I should probably like this more than I do. But for me, the more punk leanings the grunge, the lower on my list. Yes, much of the grunge style and ethos is derived from the punk roots, but those bands seem to care less about the musicality. As such, not my favorite grunge album. I like it, but it’s just in the middle for me.
Yeah this is fine
I've enjoyed a few Mudhoney songs in the past, and I understand their importance in the foundation of the grunge genre. That said, this is my first full-album listen to them and I'm unfortunately not that impressed with Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge. Aside from a few decent jams with "Let It Slide", "Good Enough", "Thorn", "Into the Drink", and "Fuzzgun '91", there isn't much here that catches my attention or can be retained well in memory. I know these guys are technically proficient, and I certainly don't mind Mark Arm's abrasive vocal delivery, but the song construction on this album doesn't illicit much in the way of distinct hooks and the lyrics admittedly get repetitive in the nihilistic nature. Also not helping matters is the low-quality production that comes off as muted without any means for the percussion or the fuzzy guitars to have any punch, which is what you should have for garage music based on my previous listening to The Stooges, The Sonics, and The White Stripes. I really wanted to like this album, because I get why Mudhoney is important to grunge and alternative rock, and again I've enjoyed songs from them in the past. But I'm sorry, this did not click for me as well as it should. Cherry-pick your favorites and go from there.
I liked it. A solid grunge album. But nothing that really grabbed on to me.
Favorite Track: Move Out
Varies between unlistenable art-noise-rock and high-energy punk, like a less bizarre and more complex Butthole Surfers. Consequently my enjoyment of this album also varied a lot between tracks. It sounds like the band had fun making it. I just wish I enjoyed the listening as much as they did the playing.
In the 1990s, the law was clear. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and unless you were into the Grunge scene, you were allowed only one other Grunge band. I chose Screaming Trees over Mudhoney, and after listening to this, I stand by that choice.
Was actually pretty cool
I had the other Mudhoney album about 100 albums ago. I don't mind this...it appeals to my punk and grunge tastes, but not much else. Don't hate but don't particularly like, either.
Thoughts before listening: Mudhoney is definitely one of those bands where I like what they do, but it can get old over an entire album. They do usually have enough songs to keep me interested though. I am surprised that this is their 2nd album on the list and I look forward to hearing it. Review: Mudhoney were kind of the unsung heroes of the Seattle grunge scene. In many ways they are as important of a band as the big 4, but they never quite got over the hump of mainstream popularity like the others did. Instead they remain underground cult figures. This album sounds sloppy and lo-fi compared to their more polished and popular contemporaries. I like the use of harmonica and organ throughout which creates a more fun sound than those other bands. Definitely a cool band with some good songs that are going on my playlist, but I will have to give the album 3-stars.
Nice bit o' grunge
Pretty enjoyable. Not amazing. Ez 3.5
It wasn't bad. A lot of songs didn't stand out upon first listen, but I'm sure a second listen will help with that. And this is something that I wouldn't mind giving a second listen to.
3 Stars (8/15)
Previously rated: Superfuzz Bigmuff (3/5) ***************************** Again, a decent rock album with off-key singing, but falls just short of putting it on the list to re-listen.
More generic punk rock. Stand-out: Move Out
Another Mudhoney album that does not contain their only "hit" song? Without "Touch Me I'm Sick", Mudhoney just can't compete with the bigger Grunge acts of the time.
sub grunge
A good overall album but not as good as their first EP. This has a lot more of what I would call a kind of classic punk styling with some grunge additions.
3.5/5
This was fine. Classic grunge. It didn't interest me.
Very solid album. I bought this at a 2nd hand shop while searching for Nirvana bootlegs.
well the punks, they existed in the 70s, but the book of 1001 albums wants to clarify that the punks also existed in the 90s. thanks for keeping me up to date, book theyre also a progenitor of nirvana and stuff, this album came out a whole two months before nevermind, see?
A good solid outing from Mudhoney but not as ground breaking as Superfuzzbigmuff
I really liked the the first two songs but overall it was okay. I liked it more than the Arcade Fire album I think.
first listen it's impossible to not compare every early 90s Seattle grunge band to Nirvana
First ever listen to this one, and I enjoyed the ride
Sounds like my ex-brother-in-law’s band. Or like a band that just missed out on being the house band for Pete and Pete.
Yeah totally fine! A good laugh. Enjoyable. Not much else to say
Quite enjoyed this. It was definitely up my street but can't say I loved it. Sort of forgettable but still worth a listen for sure.
A lot it the songs blurred together, the sound is quite muted on the album and the tracks aren't distinct enough. Some of Mudhoney's other tracks are great, so I was disappointed
A grunge original. While I prefer later grunge with better hooks and production value, the core tenants are here and done well. 3/5
It's a good listen - I can see where Nirvana and other got their sound from. Not that it's the best thing since sliced bread but I liked the vibe. Total integrity.
A solid, if uninspiring grunge outing. Works well in a. Car
3/5
Bit mixed as an album. Good Enough sounds great, liked a couple others, but there was better stuff going on in '91...
Nice bit of grunge this, but you can kind of see why they didn't make it as big as Nirvana or Soundgarden...
Never heard this before. Pretty good album. Might "stick" a little more on future listens...
Ok but not great after a string of very strong albums.
It had some interesting rhythms, but otherwise cruder and less refined sounds than most of the albums in this list.
Enjoyed it...though not sure I'd want to listen to it again.
I think for this one I’ll just Let It Slide.
Okuuuuu 6.5/10
Not really my taste
Good listen
3.5/5
Grunge is obviously one of the most prolific and recognizable periods of music from the 90s. It took the world by storm, and really altered the way we look at rock and punk. So much so that it would also drastically change how people approached rock music in the 2000s. But the roots of the genre were not all that complex. People will go back and forth on what they consider the real start of the genre. Some people even trace it all the way back to stars like Neil Young and John Lennon. But even if there were bands coming out in the mid 80s that reflected the sound better, to me the beginning was Doolittle. That frantic and noisy alt rock sound feels like the birthplace of everything that makes Nevermind so good. Where I am getting at with this? I don’t know. This is about Mudhoney. I bring Pixies up because I feel that same influence is present here. Except what you are getting on this record is much closer to punk than maybe any grunge album I’ve ever heard. Nirvana brought punk to the proper mainstream in little bite sized pieces. But Mudhoney couldn’t care less about that mainstream shit. This is as close as you’ll get to a real marriage between 70s/80s punk and 90s alternative rock. It consists of a slightly longer track list with much shorter songs. Ones that get to the point quickly. But I don’t think I would put this over any of the other big name grunge albums. It’s far too committed to being one thing and one thing only. Although I appreciate the occasional surf punk thrown in there. But I wouldn’t categorize this as an absolutely essential of that time period. It just doesn’t have the same appeal. Which I have a feeling was never this bands intention in the first place. Rating: 6/10
Garage Grunge Punk mix. Meh. Low 3.
Don’t love this type of music anymore, but it wasn’t bad.
Quite good I think there's a shorter version that's a 5, but this is a 3.9 i think Good stuff
More mud than honey
Mi first listening of a grunge album ever, but I believe in Nirvana supremacy
Some bits of enjoyable slacker rock.
Eh, pretty average in my grungy opinion. 'Broken Hands' an absolute standout though.
I was 40 miles away in the forest, and I have to say: You've been f***ing loud (?ted Nugent?)
Raw.
not a huge fan tbh
Never listened to a whole mudhoney album. This was a nice time capsule of an era.
Legalzinho
Stared at the wall to it a lot. I also almost fell asleep at some point but can't really tell when. Liked much: Check-Out Time and Broken Hands
Being from the Pacific Northwest, it was impossible not to hear a track or see a concert of Mudhoney at some point in time in the late eighties and early 1990s. They were everywhere. One of the earlier punk/grunge bands that spent a great deal of time traveling down to Portland, Oregon regularly for concerts. While I recognize their role in keeping Sub Pop Records alive and opening up the burgeoning scene to the more polished grunge acts that would follow them in the forms of Alice In Chains, Mother Lovebone/Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, I am still not that quite into their records much. Having said that, I did dig the tracks "Generation Genocide", "Good Enough" , and "Fuzzgun '91" enough this time around to add them to my playlist. A 4 for their role in the evolution of grunge, but a 2.5, rounded up to a 3 for the actual execution of this particular album.
Pretty good but not incredible alternative. Never heard of it but was fun to listen to as I unpacked. 3.5/5
Didn't love it; didn't hate it.
Catchy grunge, nothing special. The music where a lot better than the vocals, to me.
Not a bad album. Is pretty interesting.
Mudhoney gives me an old school small club raw feel that I can't explain outside of a good vibe feeling, mellow, groove with the music sort of apres-ski sort of thing. They also have a strong punk vibe and a good alt-fun without a big ego sort of feeling. Notice that this band is, for me, all about feeling, and not so much about stellar "forever" music. I think some bands are destned for this sort of role. I don't want to sound mean by saying "almost famous" but it is not mean because they have that "cool" everyone is going to like them even if they are not in the spotlight vibe and seem to perfectly fine with that. Truth be told my comment effects the actually famous worse, as they are marketed as so amazing and awesome and the next best thing but burn out quickly, while bands like Mudhoney will always be worth a listen.
Superfuzz Bigmuff is better but this is probably 2nd best
gott gruggugt rokk. meira út í pönk en málm, sem er gott mál. 3,5.
Grungesque, pre Nirvana. 3.5
This is a tough album to rate. Generally I liked and could stand what was going on. This type of grungey punk rock really got my head banging here and there. But there were some parts that were almost unlistenable, mostly due to the vocals. I think my true rating would be a 2.5, but I'll round up since the good parts outweighed the bad parts.
Fuzzy, sludgy, grungey Seattle sound record. All good tunes, nothing is a crusher but a good record to put on and remember the early 90’s.
Музыка ок, но вообще говоря ни одной причины для присутствия этого альбома в списке 1001 - при прочих Soundgarden и Nirvana, и Pearl Jam, и бог знает кого еще, - я не вижу. Лучшая песня - Don't Fade IV.
Ok, but not as good as the know grungers.
I had heard of but never heard this band before. Apparently they are considered grunge. They are from Seattle and were formed during the grunge era. To me many of the songs are more straightforward rock than grunge. There is also punk vibe on the song Let It Slide (my favorite track). Although the last song, Check Out Time, has a grunge buzz about it. I can see them being an influence on what became the grunge sound.
Grunge, garage. Ni fu ni fa.
Un beau gros potage bien épais de distortion et de mal de gorge.
- great punk energy - a little long but tbh I didn’t check to see if any of it was bonus tracks or not so that’s on me
Not bad/not great - just fine
Hard 3.75. Give it 3
Ok. Quite enjoyed it. Sort of 2.6
C teir. I can hear the punk influences, not bad, not anything super special either.
Enjoyed this - punky and grungy.
Weak enough early grunge
I’m a good boy
Again, solid.
I'm sure its a naive and probably mean thing to say, but it sounds like a bad imitation at something between Nevermind and In Utero. The vocalist doesn't have the angst/passion of Kurt, and there's nothing that's really catchy. A bunch of punk/edgy alt rock. Overall, I like the energy and vibe, Check-Out Time is probably my favorite.
3/5
Nice album , im always surprised when im listening some Mudhoney
This is interesting. A bit aggressive, a bit heart-achy, a bit rude and growly, but still it's only rock and roll. I'll listen to this again/more. 3 stars. (Oh, it's grunge, hmm, ok I can dig it!)
I’m so close to the end. I think I’ve started and finished this album multiple times without rating it and now I don’t know what to think. Sometimes it grabs you with its alt rock grunge vibe and sometimes it feels a little humdrum. Where am I with this? Three stars for safety.
It's difficult for me to like a lot of grunge from the 90s. There's a lot that I do like, and I can recognize it as being good music made by talented artists, but, for me this album is like a lot of music that came out during that time - full of angst and a desire to make something different, but there's not much heart or passion. At least not for aspects of life they're playing and singing about that I can relate to.
the "fathers of grunge", not as popular as Nirvana and others. Most of it is good but got a little too much for me by the end of it.
I can appreciate they've laid the groundwork for grunge to follow; and pushing back against slick production in favor of more raw sound on the album, that seemed on-brand.
Superfuzz got 4 stars, so this gets 3.
One of the architects of grunge and what’s probably their best work. Rough and tumble.
Don’t know
A bit heavy for my mood when I was listening to it
I can roll with Mudhoney a bit, but this was fairly unremarkable. A few good tracks, but overall a good example of baseline Grunge. It’s a genre that tends to be defined by its outlandishly great leaders when in reality a lot of what was coming out was middle of the road, such as this.
Not Bad, but far from great. Very forgettable, nothing resonates past the initial listen, but the garage sound was fun
I definitely can tell that this was an early influence on the grunge genre but something about the sound isn’t complete. Decent overall
This was just ok
Only heard "Touch me I'm sick" by Mudhoney before listening to this one. Mudhoney certainly is a lesser grunge band compared to Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. Lesser in the sense that the previous mentioned are a level above in terms of musicianship and songwriting. The production quality is also muddled. I read that it was recorded on a low quality tape which explains a lot. It's not a bad album just bland. I rather listen to other grunge bands than Mudhoney.
Good but I like heard more interesting albums before
This was a fun one, felt kinda surf rocky
This is fine enough, but not really anything in here to get me going. Lo-fi production buries some solid drum and bass work throughout. A few standout tracks to my ear: Pokin' Around, Move Out, Something So Clear. Overall, this one runs very middle of the pack for me: soft 3 / 5.
I liked the fast paced tempo of the guitar and drums but the singer was a bit too whiny for me. It started growing on me after the instrumental Fuzz Gun '91 but still a mid to low 3.
The instrumentals on this are pretty solid even though some songs are a bit repetitive. The voice isn’t my fav but works in some songs. Parts became catchy (hooks?) and got me in the long run. Going for a low 3 here.
Interesting to learn about grunge bands I haven't heard before. Music was decent but not particularly meaningful to me. I liked Into The Drink and Move Out, really didn't like Who You Drivin' Now, as exemplars. I don't think I'll be coming back to Mudhoney.
Actually I thought this was pretty good and I would give it a 4 except for the one song with snoring in it that made me not want to listen to the album again.
The industrial division of thrash inc
Great early grunge with a side of punk thrown in. Knew Overblown and a few other MH tunes but overall not super familiar with them. Will enjoy browsing through their extensive catalog. 3.5
Meh
It was OK, and brings back memories of the 90s - but couldn't hear a track that stood out
I should have listened to this ages ago but for some reason didn’t. Nice grunge. Moments of five star rock, but in the end a 3 for me and I think the main reason was minor sloppiness in playing and songs sounded the same enough that I was ready for it to end when it did.
Best Song: Broken Hands. Has a sort of dudebro, singalong vibe that's halfway charming. Loved the solo at the end too. Worst Song: Good Enough. Commercial music for a melancholy Walmart ad. Overall: Ever wondered what grunge would be like without any of the angst and charm? Look no further. It's got a certain dive bar appeal to it, but it lacks the heart necessary for this genre to work. The second half was better than the first, though.
decent early-90s grunge album. Mudhoney was one of those Seattle bands that everybody knew of but never quite got the spotlight that the handful of breakouts got. I think, most likely, that their music was a little less accessible for the mainstream.
If in the mood for grunge it is good
Good beat for shoveling lots of snow today.
Surprisingly did not find this album to be that bad. It’s a 90s grunge album and that’s all it needs to be. Nothing really too special about it but it’s consistent and enjoyable. Wish more unknown albums would’ve been like this. 6.2/10
I get why Kurt liked these guys.
The year before this album was released, Mudhoney played live at the Burland Hall in Newtown, but , sadly I missed it. That same year, lead singer Mark Arm released a single on Sub Pop which he called The Freewheelin Mark Arm, in honour of Bob Dylan; the A-side being a cover of Dylan’s Masters Of War. Fortunately I did manage to grab a copy of that. I’m pretty sure I knew Mudhoney before I knew Nirvana. I think there’s some truth in the Trouser Press review of the album : "Conrad Uno’s dry 8-track production sharpens Mudhoney’s garage-rock edge — evident in Arm’s fuzzed-out vocals and a shared fondness for second-hand blues progressions — enough to stand apart from the watered-down metal of most flannel merchants, but they don’t go anywhere with it." Still there are highlights here. I really like Who You Drivin Now? They take no prisoners on Into The Drink. The blues-influenced Something So Clear. Move Out is a rousing 60’s throwback that features Arm’s harmonica (more successfully than his harp on Pokin’ Around). I enjoyed it, but can someone please tell me where they got the intro to Broken Hands from? It’s driving me mad.
It's a fine album, but nothing screamed out that made this album a must listen.
If you like grungy guitaring then you would probably like Mudhoney. They are OK. Let it Slide is a pretty rock'n song. Can definitely hear how Nirvana was influenced by them and they deserve cred as one of the innovators of grunge rock. Who brought a harmonica to this party? Okay.
If you're not a fan of the grunge era of music, this album probably won't resonate with you. Or perhaps it might? But it's not as easily accessible as the giants of grunge. There are some Pearl Jam esque riffs in this album but Mudhoney's guitarist is definitely not in the ranks as PJ's McCreary, and often the guitar solos seem a bit sloppy... This album reminds me of skateboarding when I was young. Which was nice. But overall this album is pretty.... Well, just ok. Despite it being a huge seller and perhaps a saving grace for Sub Pop records, there's no wow factor or anything that is overly impressive. It's not bad but it's not podium material. It's a great garage rock album, and in fact this band would be well suited for a club show. Raw, fast, melodic, rock and roll.
nije baš moja šalica čaja
Pretty good 3.5
A solid early 90s indie grunge album with hints of pop. Pretty decent but nothing outstanding that would make me need to come back for more.
Loved the album cover and name. Decent album.
I kinda liked that there was a harmonica in this. Overall it was alright
There were some decent tracks, but as far as grunge goes (not my preferred genre) it's.......fine?
Love the vibe but not really the songs.
Saw Mudhoney live not so long ago. A great gig! And whilst much of this material is pretty good, it doesn't leap at you in the way the in-person experience does. So, it's a good rock record with some solid tunes. Little more to be said, except that it's cool these guys were in at the ground floor of the grunge scene. Go catch them if they're playing nearby.
I liked “Good Enough” and “Pokin’ Around”. Harmonica in a grunge album was cool to hear. The rest was at best early Nirvana sounding and at worst kinda uninteresting.
Not what I wanted, better than I expected
It's a little too grunge-punk for me, glad I listened to it but wouldn't listen again
I never heard of this before, and I liked it.
Eerste indruk was positief maar hoe langer ik luisterde hoe meer me begon tegen te staan hoezeer alle nummers op elkaar leken (weinig verrassends)
It’s a fine grunge record but nothing groundbreaking to my ears.
Alright
Let it Slide good song but not the best listening experience for my taste.
Not bad. Really. But many repeating and short songs. It felt full of the same stuff. 15 songs in like 42 minutes. Less development than I would personally like
Diet grunge You can recognize the flavor but man it has a weird after taste
Background music for a movie scene where a grunge band is playing in a garage in a sterile Stepford Wives-esque neighborhood.
idk bro 6.9/10
Pioneers of grunge? Contextually I can see how they could hit hard. I wish I were into grunge…
listened 2x. decent 3.1
Had heard of these guys in Nirvana and Pearl Jam documentaries. Seattle grunge scene. This is okay. Prob won't go back to it. 2.5/5
Respectable grunge album, though nowhere near Ten and Nevermind, released in the same year.
Good noisy punk, but a little lackluster in parts.
Grunge halt...
Very Grunge. Very enjoyable. An album to come back to. They probably get sick of the inevitable Nirvana comparisons … but here it is any way. They’re like Nirvana without the accessibility of the hooks. All the ethos, but they make you work a bit harder for the enjoyment.
Zu rockig
Enjoyed listening
I like the harmonica in there with the grunge. I think I liked the second half better than the first 3
If I randomly saw this band at a local bar I'd probably see them again, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.
That's a great Sub Pop release. Suffers in proportionality, where half feels like standard grunge, half a bit more abstract, and a sliver like a mess. Mud, maybe, but that descriptor is better for the good parts of EGBDF, where the band eschews the Nirvana pop sheen and records something just as good. Odious observation of a far-less-than-odious listen.
A lot of this is solid, mid-period grunge, which is great for getting a feel for what the pre-Nevermind sound was like. Dissonant yet accessible. They really lost me with that harmonica nonsense though.
Mudhoney is one of those bands where, you get that they were influential, but you would still much rather listen to the bands they influenced.
You can hear just how many bands listened to this record. I’d rather listen to a lot of those bands though. 2,5 / 5 content. 5 / 5 cover art.
Grunge
+Good Enough Tempted to give it 4 just for Good Enough
Started off really good and I think it kinda lost its shine through it, don't know, started to sound repetitive
Pretty average
3.5
I dunno, really didn’t get much out of it. Again it’s fine but not my thing.
not what i expected with that album name and art, sounds like sex bob-omb
Interesting
Never listened to this band before but aware they were part of the Seattle grunge scene. This doesn't have that sludgy sound. Full of interesting fuzzy riffs. Decent
Good seattle grunge, not the best
I was always aware of Mudhoney but never really listened. It was a good album.
A new grunge band to me. Good energy!
Definitely early years of grunge. Early sound of Pearl Jam, Nirvana.
Grunge fathers in THE year of grunge. Probably inevitable, it is far from being as strong as the staples of the genre that year ('Nevermind', 'Ten', 'Dirt', 'Badmotorfinger'...) but it is strong enough and a relevant album from a band that already were veterans by then
Grunge, garage. Ni fu ni fa.
Rough but influential sound. Relatively enjoyable for me
Okay, well now it makes even less sense that their debut EP made it onto a 1001 albums list. The album is pretty listenable grunge stuff. It competes with / complements Nirvana reasonably well for your listening pleasure. My problem with the grunge sound is (and this might be misinformed or unfair): it kinda has the swagger of garage rock, it kinda has the heaviness of heavy metal, it kinda has the alternative appeal of indie rock... but it's kinda too apathetic to be any of these things, so it ends up a muddy mess of nothingness. 3*
I think I said this about Mudhoney before when I reviewed Superfuzz Bigmuff, but this reminds me of the Stooges and MC5, but with a 90s sensibility. More punk than grunge. Gets a little rambling and unfocused in the middle tracks, but they have a great fuzzy sound that never gets too murky and is surprisingly catchy when they want it to be. Fave Songs: Good Enough, Broken Hands, Something So Clear, Pokin' Around, Into the Drink, Check-Out Time
Ok
This was my first time listening to a Mudhoney album, and I enjoyed it. I thought the guitar playing and drumming were fantastic. Lyrically and vocally, I wasn't terribly impressed, and a lot of the songs kind of ran together for me. This album was no Ten, but it was still fairly enjoyable. This is the type of album that I'd enjoy listening to while I'm at the gym.
not my type of music but there were some pretty good songs. i liked the incorporation of the harmonica added a cool layer
Some alright songs heree
likeable but nothing special, any number of 60s garage bands were just as good
It’s an alright sound, Pro Skater vibes for sure. Not a personal favorite I’ll dip into much in the future, but I thought it was good. I find grunge to generally be less exciting to me than punkier punk.
I liked the indie/post-punk tracks: Generation Genocide, Good Enough, Something So Clear, Fuzz Gun and Pokin Around. I didn’t like the full-on metal tracks.
Niet de beste grunge dat ik al hoorde.
You know this is more diverse with a very strong finish than the first couple of tracks would suggest. They're not quite distinctive enough to make them a 'what aboutery' with the grunge Premier League but a strong playoffs from the Championship level.
Grunge isn't really my thing, but they're cool. I'd say like 3-stars though.
This is good and an important contribution to Grunge, but I don't think it's at the same level as albums by Nirvana, Soundgarden or Pearl Jam. Likely why they didn't have the same level of commercial success as the others. My favorite track was the instrumental, Fuzzgun '91. Great rock and roll for any genre but definitely encapsulates the Grunge vibe.
The songs were kind of indistinguishable to me but I do think that would change with repeated listens. The inclusion of harmonica solos made for a nice surprise. I'm sure we don't get Nirvana without this so that's something.
Saw them once at a matinee performance in a tiny pub and wasn't convinced, but I didn't mind this. Preferable to Nirvana - a bit more variety and less 'rockist'. Just a bit more 'fun' really. Howevere, not the sort of thing I would listen to out of choice. Better than expected but not as good as I'd want.
2.5
Kinda grunge-y, kinda punky, kinda cool. Mudhoney were kind of ahead of the curve in a lot of ways, but their stuff has just never really clicked with me. A lot of the time this album just left me thinking "oh this sounds like Pixies/Nirvana but I'd rather be listening to Pixies/Nirvana". Some very cool drumming and surprising psychedelic passages, tunes just didn't stick.
# 14 : Solid grunge rock, pretty standard sound for the genre. Nothing exciting, but I liked Pokin' Around.
Seems like classic grunge. It's not bad, but probably not something that I would listen to again.
K-Mart Offspring?
This is fun but not sure why here
Some other comment said tracks that didn't make Tony Hawk soundtrack. Agreed. Still enjoyed it but probably won't return.
Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge was a fun album that had me bopping my head along to the grunge guitars of '91. I enjoyed the short sharpness of the majority of the songs, apart from the only song that was longer than four minutes. Best: Good Enough Worst: Broken Hands
Eh.. PS I'm upgrading the previous John Grant album to 5 stars
ovo šta sam čuo - dobro je, sviđa mi se!
Not bad but not for me
Nostalgia mediocre and noisy
At its best, it brings to mind some of the great proto-punk bands like the Stooges and the MC5. At its worst, it's just sort of ordinary grunge. 3 stars.
I love grunge, and this is grunge! However, I came to a realization while listening to a band that I always knew of, but had never heard much of. I love Grunge with an exceptional lead vocalist: Chris, Eddie, Kurt, Scott, ….fucking Layne! This has all of the elements of good grunge, minus the very important bit. Otherwise, hey… not bad!
I liked it but nothing was crazy good for me
Man Nirvana was special. I respect Mudhoney for the influence they had on the genre and I’m sure this went crazy live, but hearing these songs after hearing Nirvana makes them feel flat. Cover Art: 8/10 both the cover art and album title are sick
This is not normally my type of music, although something about the heaviness and the speed worked for me for a few songs, and saved it from a sub 3 rating
Nice bit of early 90s grunge I must have missed on the day. Nothing ground breaking though
3.5
Interesting record - very of the time yet doesn’t sound dates. It captures the same essence as Sonic Youth and Fugazi and lays the groundwork for a lot of the grunge sound. It’s a cool record from a genre that is now almost overshadowed by the breakout acts, but does not offer enough to cut through.
