Reviews (page 5 of 8)

Eh, not great not bad.

Generally, I'm not a fan of Aerosmith, especially everything they've released in the last 40 years which I find almost unlistenable and wish they had hung it up a long time ago. I have to admit, some of their 70's stuff is alright and though I considered them a "poor-man's Stones", they had the capability to rock out pretty good at times. Toys In The Attic is my favourite Aerosmith album and the follow-up, Rocks might be my next fav, definitely their least uneven records. It does "rocks" pretty heavy at times and didn't realize it has a decent track list with some above par songs. Again, I'm not a fan, but if I was forced to listen to Steven Tyler screech and wail, Rocks is a good option. More proof that once and a while, drugs can be effective.

Pretty good. Haven't listened to Aerosmith much since the mid-90s, and this is way before that!

Much more bearable than the other 2 Aerosmith albums that have been forced onto me, but partly because this one was very short. Still not a fan of them at all, but at least this one had a bit of a bluesy feel to it which helped.

I don't know any of these songs. Album was alright, but in keeping with the spirit of the age, I feel it should be removed from the 1,001 list and replaced with The Electric Mayhem by Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

Classic sleazy 70's FM Rock. It's Aerosmith. They're not changing the world with this album but it is exactly as you would want it. It would be better to have this or Pump on the list (ditch 'Toys in the Attic' - there's no need for 3 Aerosmith albums on this list. Best Tracks: Back in the Saddle; Last Child; Sick as a Dog

Probably not the best Aerosmith album, but there's some definite gems on here.

I just know the two big hits from this album, I've never been a huge Aerosmith fan... Forgot how sick Last Child is though. I do like that's just kinda down n' dirty rock and roll, good guitar tones, good riffs, straightforward rockin tunes. Although the rest of the album is largely forgettable compared to the hits.

Aerosmith definitely has its lane: straight-forward chugging rock 'n roll. Can get a bit messy and ramshackle at times and the somewhat muddy production doesn't help. Highlights: "Last Child" (catchy dirty riff running through the song), "Sick as a Dog" (Stonesy vibe) Notable: "Combination" (needs a new vocal take because the harmonized or double-tracked vocals just sound meh), "Home Tonight" (the big power ballad)

liked songs: Last Child, Combination, Nobody's Fault Solid. 3.5

Steven Tyler is a mega creep, which makes it hard to listen to Aerosmith, but that's ok, because this album is ok at best. Back In the Saddle has always been my favorite Aerosmith song, but besides that there isn't much going on in this album. They really did just write the same riff 9 times. Low 3.

This is the best output Iv heard from Aerosmith, a really good hard rock album. One that deserves to be on this list. Not quite sure it makes my frequent rotation for now.

I’m calling this a generous 3.

It’s Aerosmith. Painfully average. Better than Pump though. Pretty low bar I know.

Its just ok 3/5

No es la gran cosa. Un rock básico, que cumple su cometido.

Rock. Some good stuff here but overall it felt too noisy for me. Difficult to parse out individual instruments.

Not bad.

Good not great. Never listened to the entire album. And now I have.

rock, but too much roll

Many people see Aerosmith as having different phases, and this album represents the “before they got clean” stage. Fans often prefer this era because the band had a rawer, grittier rock sound, while the later years saw them become more polished and commercialized, especially with their MTV hits in the ’80s. I also think MTV had a big part in this, bringing more glamour and glitz to rock music, which changed how bands presented themselves. Rocks offers a glimpse into a different time before all of that, when the music had a more unrefined and genuine quality, showing a time before rock became more commercialized and polished.

Come sempre, non spiacevole ma anche non interessante

un solido album rock, senza infamia senza lode ma piacevolmente scorrevole

nice but a little loud

Riding around the country, playing guitars loud, rocking out every night, young girls in my bed, fifth of vodka in my hand, scarf tied to my microphone stand, oops the Sheriff’s 16-year old daughter might be pregnant, gotta roll, guitar solo, boogie woogie, two girls at a time, one might have been a man and the other too young even for me, drum solo, scarves hanging in the bus now, makes for more quiet spots to take the girls, the Sheriff lost his election because of the scandal related to his daughter’s pregnancy but somehow his very pregnant 16-year old daughter was elected Sheriff is that legal, too tired and drunk to understand, that girl was definitely a man but also wearing a Sheriff’s badge, these guitars are so loud, I can’t see anything through all these scarves, I’m surrounded by 16-year old pregnant law enforcement officers and scarves and guitars, I can’t get sober but every bottle I try to drink from is just full of scarves, I’ve been on the road for years rocking out every night but these pregnant Sheriffs never seem to give birth, they’re just always pregnant, I would skip town but they’re on the bus and also the entire audience at the next concert venue, I think, but it’s hard to see them clearly because I’m so drunk and the guitars are so loud and there are too many scarves in the way, my entire closet is just scarves and I’m scared to change out of my clothes because I’m worried they’ll have turned to scarves when I try to put them back on and the 16-year old Sheriffs are too pregnant to want to fool around but we do stuff anyway and it’s getting odd with all my clothes on and I was just dry-humping scarves last night and there wasn’t even a 16-year old Sheriff around I don’t think, why am I so drunk, I can’t hear anything but boogie woogie rock and roll and maybe it’s the bus fumes that are making me high all the time but I can’t think straight and I can’t see anyone because of all the fucking scarves and I can’t hear anything over the guitars and I just want to talk to someone and ask how long this tour is supposed to go on or where we’re going or realistically how many Sheriffs - especially 16-year old pregnant Sheriffs - there could be serving in office at the same time in one country or whether this is an international tour but we are only ever on buses and in clubs I think but I can’t really tell because scarves and the 16-year old Sheriffs just want to have sex but also don’t and it’s hard to tell if that is actually really happening because I can’t see them or hear them but I know they’re there. Rock & Roll!

Another Aerosmith inclusion from their 70s golden years, and it just feels correct; they cranked out several albums throughout that decade which make up the majority of their greatest hits, and this album contains a fair few of those. What to say? This album utilizes that quintessential Aerosmith formula that made them so formidable and so unique among a sea of 70s rockers. And again as has been the case with their other albums featured on this project: if I was being scrutinous, I'd draw attention to the fact that Aerosmith may not have really been much of an "album band"; every song is baseline enjoyable, but there are definite standout tracks that have survived the tests of time whereas others are a bit forgettable. But despite it all, Aerosmith is iconic (and a long lasting icon at that) and deserves representation on this project.

60-luku ja sen iloisempi rock kuuluu tässä ilmestymisvuoteen nähden yllättävän paljon. Tuntuu kuin he haluaisivat vähän nostalgisoida? Toimivia napakoita rock-kappaleita. Ei suurta tunnelmannostatusta kuitenkaan; ks. 60-luvun henki, vähemmän tukkarockia kuin oletin. Tykkään, mutta vaikutu. Hilkulla 3.

Back in the saddle isn't the best aerosmith song, but it's the best one here. I like them, but I expected more

This rock album has a lot to go for it. Tyler's vocals are instantly recogniseable, the musicians are good and the songs are catchy. For me personally it is an 'almost' on most scores and therefore it sits in the... what do you call the opposite of a 'sweet spot'? Despite the (well cultivated?) rowdy looks and behaviour of the band, I find the songs quite soft, a bit cliché, and commercial sounding. I can see the appeal and many songs are quite fun, I'm sure it's good on parties. Apparently, this album (and Aerosmith in general) has had a great influence on other musicians, some of which I do like, and I agree that this album deserves to be in the list of 1001. In terms of musical creativity and emotional appeal it's a bit lacking for me.

Great guitar riffs underneath it all. Not quite my bag, but I can see why it’s rated - good quality Rock

This album is tight and short but I'm not really sure if it deserves to be on the 1001 list. The two best songs are right at the beginning. Back in the Saddle is a classic and I dig the bass line on Last Child but it's on a downward slope from there. The rest is pretty mid.

For some reason Aerosmith is one of the classic rock bands that I've never paid attention to. I know a couple hits but otherwise I have basically slept on them. Glad I was given a chance to listen to delve into their discography. Rocks is a solid album. A tight 35 minutes with a couple songs that will remain in rotation. It doesn't pull any punches and stays true to its namesake. Pretty satisfying listen, might have to give Aerosmith another chance. 3.48 stars

to be honest, I thought I would give it a 1. I never liked Aerosmith, I thought it was some kind of crap, honestly, I didn't like this album, but I can't call it bad either, I would have given it a 2.5, but that's not possible here (that's why it's a 3

Not my favorite Aerosmith album.

Better than i was expecting

This was OK. Perfectly listenable, but no track stood out, and none was memorable.

Last child: great so g

There are some bands that, despite the lyrics, aren't really about anything at all, other than the music itself. Just a celebration of sex, drugs and rock n roll, in all of its excessiveness. Aerosmith fits the bill for me. I'm not knocking it, although I don't exactly condone it either. Particularly in the case of the ever creepy Steven Tyler. But separate the art from the artist and just listen to the music and you can see the appeal. It's a good hard rock album (not heavy enough for metal though) and it influenced a generation of 90s band. Axl Rose is not surprising. Kurt Cobain is though. But again, it's just the power of music, isn't it? Personally, it's not a favorite and it lacks any standout singles present in other albums. But it's a good document of rock n roll of the era.

Swaggering

Who knew Aerosmith approached heavy metal in their catalogue. None of it really hooked me but I did drive a little faster while listening.

I guess this would be the one essential "album" album from Aerosmith. 'Get Your Wings,' 'Toys in the Attic,' and 'Permanent Vacation' are all inconsistent affairs. 'Rocks' is a strong distillation of their sound and notable for showcasing Aerosmith's sort-of innovation, which is the crossbreed of American funk and soul music with British-based blues rock. "Back in the Saddle" does indeed whip ass. If somebody asked me for an example of a guitar line that sounded outright mean, I would offer this. "Last Child" is noteworthy for upholding Aerosmith's cheeky approach to funk music. "Nobody's Fault" has a doomy quality to it. Maybe the album is not as consistent as I thought. B-

Solid. 3.4.

Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

Ik ben niet de grootste Aerosmith fan. Doet me gewoon niet veel. Degelijk rock album, maar dat is het dan ook wel. 2.6*

The best Aerosmith so far, but that's not saying loads and loads. It's very silly and enjoyable rock, isn't it, but imagine if this was your thing? If you really, really liked Aerosmith? Certifiable.

What the Stones would have sounded like if they'd produced anything decent after 1973 (don't come at me with "Start Me Up" either). It's gritty white boy rock and it either floats your boat or it doesn't. Mine is floating, but with concerns about a small leak just below the waterline.

Back in the Saddle 3 Last Child 2.8 Rats in the Cellar 3.1 Combination 2.7 Sick as a Dog 2.8 Nobody's Fault 3.2 Get the Lead Out 2.7 Lick and a Promise 2.8 Home Tonight 3 Score: 2.9

I've heard some of these tracks off this album. Never heard of this album before. Just straight classic rock.

Had to decide about this one - when you're in the mood, there's all sorts of links here to 70s & 80s metal 3/5

Rocks is the fourth studio album by Aerosmith, originally released in 1976. For their fourth studio venture, Aerosmith does exactly what the title suggests: rock. This record is heavy and hits hard - setting the stage for the popular music scene through the late 70s and into the 80s. The roots of hair metal are very evident on here, so it's no surprise that bands like GnR refer to this as one of their inspirations. The record is not particularly interesting. In hindsight this falls directly into the "generic dad rock" category. However, this proved to be pretty influential and was an enjoyable listen overall. It really transports you to 1976 and recalls scene from the likes of Dazed and Confused.

Ég hefði samt viljað fá Dream on.

Nice album

Pretty average album. “Last Child” is a great song, but the rest of the album is pretty uninspired. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

Iconic band. Was expecting more.

Huh. Kinda disappointed! This is considered one of Aerosmith’s best albums from their “classic” period but I was left a little underwhelmed. It started off with a classic banger but I don’t know… I ended up thinking the rest of the album was like a talented bar band but not iconic or anything.

Rocknroll

Standard aerosmith album. 3 stars

This is rock.

Now that was one standard sounding hard rock album. Not sure if it is because we just got an Aerosmith album last week or what, but this one did nothing special for me.

This was definitely a better album than the previous one, but still didn't too much for me. Something about Aerosmith and Tyler's voice idk.

Un album avec une certaine retenue pour Aerosmith. Je l'ai trouvé tranquille, mais solide.

I’m having a blast, I swear, but ANOTHER Aerosmith album? You gotta be shitting me. They’ll end up with 5 on this list if I’m counting right

Just okay overall, after the opening hits. Really on the fence for me b/w 2 and 3 stars.

3/5 not my cup of tea

Pretty good rock album. Some memorable ones, some forgettable ones.

Me and my loser friends, we gotta get Aerosmith tickets. Top priority of the summer.

perkele sentään, kyllä nämä pokot ovat poppisynnistä yhden tason korkeammalla.. ei tätä voi pelkästään radiosoopaksi tuomita. sopii salille myös hyvin... vaikka on kompleksiota niin voi paskoilla stereoilla blästäillä monotonista äänimuuria jos halajaa... ja siihen loppuu kuorrutus... kiillotus... lasitus... steven tyler ehkä maailman yliarvostetuin vokalisti idgaf bro... i dont hive a heck... koko albumin ajan vaikka vähän huonompia biisejä tulee niin pysyy kokoajan hyvät VAIBIT VIBAT VIBES yllä last child

Generic rock album for me. Nothing really stands out, none of their better songs here or anything. Really like their tone though. Maybe I should listen to it again, not sure. Weak 3 for me for now.

Sure they do. If I were in charge, I would only put one Aerosmith album on the list, and it would the Toys in the Attic. But I'm not in charge of the list, so I had to listen to three Aerosmith albums, each of which sound about as good as the others.

Closer than a 2 than a 3 but a few really solid tracks raise it up

Nothing is bad about this album, but still it sounds like a poor man's Led Zeppelin. Favorite song: Last child

I'm negatively biased against aerosmith because of all the toothless schlock they churned out for MTV in the 90s. But they were a decent band in the 70s.

I feel like Aerosmith went from overrated to underrated. This album wasn't bad, had a few rockin hits, just feel like we all got tired of them in the early 2000s.

Listened to this after a few Led Zeppelin albums which makes this look not as good in comparison. Id rather listen to them but this one is solid too

Första låten var trist. Last Child har något. Lite funkigare och coolare. Rats In The Cellar är också bra. Skönt tempo. Gillar Combination. Helt okej album.

Det är rätt ok. Men inte mer. Synd.

Tycker Toys in the attic är bättre än denna, som saknar riktigt fullträffar (Last child är bästa låten) men fortfarande är ett riktigt stabilt rock & roll-album. En heroinstinn Steven Tylor blir ju liksom aldrig fel. Stark trea.

5/28/24. Always been familiar with Aerosmith and their sound, would definitely consider this one of their classics. Not many albums start off as strong, especially with the first two tracks.

Not bad. Back In The Saddle, Lost Child, Combination, and Home Tonight are the Standouts.

Rock really never sounded so dirty as it did in the mid 70s, and this album is borderline proto-hair metal, so its practically dripping with the sauce...

It's alright. Better then their self titled album but missing a "Dream On" to make it really worth the listen.

I like this era of Aerosmith but then again I like all aeras of Erosmith. However several songs just felt like do-overs of others. "Sick As A Dog" verses the same melody as the hook of "Back in the Saddle Again."

Yes. It does.

Starts off strong, dips a bit in the middle and then ends nicely.

Starts off okay but gets worse as it goes. The last song is shit.

Significantly better than their other album Pump (Dump) 3.5

6.5/10

noisy and cluttered at times, however there some redeeming passages.

It requires setting aside some notions about Aerosmith and Steven Tyler from the intervening years, but this is a pretty good classic rock album. It relies on superior guitar work and a unique vocalist without forgetting the rest of the band entirely. It's got grooves and riffs and it feels emblematic of the time.

It was fine! I don’t love Aerosmith but they do make listenable music. I feel like there have been a lot of albums I’ve been indifferent to recently, and this is one of them.

Fine! My parents liked Aerosmith. It's enjoyable enough. Not sure why it's a necessary album.

Great musicians who make very generic rock Best songs: Nobody’s Fault, Get the Lead Out, Home Tonight

first listen feels like one of their weaker albums

Solid classic rock. No more, no less.

Is it me or do a lot of Aerosmith’s most famous songs sound the same? Walk This Way, Get the Lead Out, Love in an Elevator… Anyway, I like the introspective side of Aerosmith — Dream On, Living on the Edge, Nobody’s Fault. I can fuck with that. I can’t deal with the gross, negging, sex pest Lothario version of the band — Sick as a Dog, Lick and a Promise. Blech. The music on this album is pretty good. It rocks hard and it doesn’t really let up. On the other hand, a lot of it sounds derivative of other bands (Led Zeppelin, Funkadelic, etc.). Lyrically, a lot of this hasn’t aged well. Vocally, Steven Tyler is one of those guys who gets grating after a while. There’s a reason I don’t really listen to entire Aerosmith albums in one go. His voice is especially irritating on the closing track here, Home Tonight. For a must-listen album from such a famous band, I don’t think I knew any of these songs…maybe Get the Lead Out? But again, a lot of their songs sound the same, so I don’t know. I don’t think I can give this more than a 3/5.

Don't think that I've ever heard any of these songs before. They weren't terrible, but they weren't great.

It was fine.

Not the best Aerosmith album, or probably even in their top 3 discussion. But a great raw sound from the 70s, but unfortunately this album just has a lot of filler. Last child is still a great song that shows their talent and has a great vocal from Steven.

This is a pretty decent album, nothing particularly standout but an enjoyable listen from start to finish.

Aerosmid, first three songs ok

C'est bon.

Nothing the world has been waiting for.

After Back in the Saddle, I wasn't hearing anything particularly memorable on this album. Then things got a little more interesting with Nobody's Fault but not enough to push this 3+ up to a 4.

I've never been a huge Aerosmith fan. This isn't bad, kinda like Rats in the Cellar. I'd give it 3.5 if it was an option.

Good, reminds me of why I like Aerosmith without sticking around long enough to remind me I'm lukewarm on Aerosmith. Back In The Saddle is a killer album opening

Nice blues influences. Classic rock singers all sound the same

"There's no doubt we were doing a lot of drugs by then, but whatever we were doing, it was still working for us." — Joe Perry on the making of "Rocks" ...

Probably more of a 3.5. Down and dirty album by Aerosmith. Really enjoyed it. Back in the Saddle is one of my favs.

kind of underwhelming for a reason i can't quite articulate

Never listened to Aerosmith because of their cornball vibe in the 1990s and early 2000s. This just sounds like a rock album with Chuck Berry sounding songs, Led Zeppelin sounding songs and some James Brown in the mix. Not sure what I expected tho. I guess rock ballads. Which I guess Home Tonight touches on. I forget how long they've been around. This music is pop, inoffensive(except for the yodeling), well made. They have solid musicianship. There are a number of bands I'd rather listen to to get my fix for this because Steven Tyler's voice isn't for me.

Damals halt mit viel Hall. Ja es war so.

Not a bad album, I just have a hard time with Steven Tyler's voice. 3/5

Not my favorite Aerosmith record, but not the worst. Pretty average. Standout Tracks: Back in the Saddle, Last Child

A bit of a guilty pleasure, and now I need another shower.

Decent i guess. Toys is better imo

Ich weiß nicht so recht. Rockig ja, wirklich fesselnd eher nicht. (3/5)

70s Aerosmith isn't bad. It's goofy, but they aren't in their full-blown annoying era. Totally listenable. "Nobody's Fault" is surprisingly good.

A classic rock and roll album.

Favourite track(s): Last Child; Rats In The Cellar; Nobody's Fault Some really memorable riffs and vocals that are likely easy to sing along to after repeated listens are definite positives. Before my minds eye, I see Steven Tyler with long hair, tilting the mic stand, sometimes being accompanied by a band member. In that sense, it seems like "typical" rock music - polished but not really inventive. Not that I had all that many references in the genre. While it does not make me want to rock out, it at least makes me rhythmically nod my head.

When I am in the mood for them, I enjoy. Not generally in the mood for them and this is not my fave of theirs. There were a couple of songs that were pleasant surprises.

Me han gustado sin ser las canciones más conocidas

I'm most likely missing the historical context, but its kinda meh to me... A really soft 3

Before their nineties mega-hits. Not too bad late 70s hard rock.

Surprisingly tolerable effort from Aerosmith. Sure the lyrics are still weak and the content superficial, but the strong influences from UK - especially The Who and early NWOBHM - make this an enjoyable one. It also never overstays its' welcome, and Steven Tyler doesn't go full Steven Tyler just yet.

Aerosmith is at their best on a lot of the songs on Rocks. “Back In the Saddle” is a great opener and “Nobody’s Fault” is so good that Metallica might even have stolen the opening for “Damage Inc.” At other times Aerosmith goes full Aerosmith and delivers songs like “Lick And A Promise” plunging me back into a reality where I’m reminded that Aerosmith is only great in certain doses.

A perfectly average album. There's probably only one "must listen" album in Aerosmith's catalog and it ain't this one.

They didn’t lie - this album does rock. Great riffs and great vocals. Love the screams in Back in the Saddle and Last Child. Nobody’s Fault is great. Home Tonight shouldn’t have been the closer - it should have ended with a more rocking track.

Not my style at all

Rock, mid, differing, poser, partly annoying, partly ok

Sometimes you just need simple rock and roll

not my cup of tea

Hard to believe there have been this many Aerosmith albums deemed essential, at least this one was a decent listen. Pleasingly, this was mostly away from annoying cock-rock and indulgence. If I ignore the solos, which won't ever win me over, this was solid enough from start to finish. It's a style of music I don't get much out of it, but atleast with this record I can understand the appeal. 2.5/5 Fav Track: Nobody's Fault

Solid enough but unmemorable to me. I liked it more than later period Aerosmith that I've heard in the past.

classic rock, wel enjoyable

Just can’t get into Aerosmith. It feels like hard rock that’s just going through the motions. But fine.

One of the last gasps of the hard rock sound that began in the late '60s before punk arrived and changed things. Never been a big Aerosmith fan but this is a very good album. Maybe Joe Perry is a better guitarist than I've given him credit for?

This was some very adequate classic rock. Nothing about it is offensive, there are some good guitar solos, and rocking riffs, but we are supposed to be listening to the greatest albums of all time and this doesn't belong. To me, Aerosmith is like a worse version of the Rolling Stones and it's not clear what they are doing on this album that any other classic rock band could not do. I have no idea what is unique about any of this. None of their hits are on here either which is bizarre.

Competent

It is what it is right! Just a bit of a lol but isn't going to be a comfortable listen unless in a car on a long drive.... Probably

I guess it's fine but it's all pretty similar. They do have a good sound but after a while it gets boring

Er kommet til at høre det tre gange pga. rod i listen, men stadigvæk har det bare ikke bidt mig helt. Måske synes jeg det er lidt plat? Kan godt lide energien dog, men guitaren er måske lidt butt rock.

Classic rock.

This is good by Aerosmith standards, but still not my thing. Always trite feeling.

Felt like the same song over and over again. I'm sure it was an influential in some way, but nothing really stood out to me.

The album was really hit or misss

Decent album some great songs here and some that are just kind of ok. Really like Last Child.

Not really an Aerosmith fan but I get it. This album starts strong but I found myself getting kind of bored after the first two or three songs. Still an OK listen.

3.4/5 Best Track: Combination

# 129 : Good album with a few bangers, not to shabby! Favourite Track : Sick As A Dog Listened : 12/12/2023

solid album, really enjoyed the first song!

First song is best.

Identifying Aerosmith - it’s Aerosmith

I still think their hits are good but I'm not sure we need the rest. I guess I outgrew them. Sorry friends.

Hard rock très classique

Opened strong but I lost interest

Weird hearing so many Aerosmith songs back to back and not knowing any of them. I like his Tyler's voice better on this album but it's definitely less polished than their later stuff. Twas okay.

Good music, but it is so raw and unpolished that it sounds all quite amaturistic.

It’s ok, not really blown away by it

Easy to listen to, easy to forget.

Favorite Songs: Sich As A Dog Get The Lead Out Surprisingly catchy while being what I would describe as a pretty solid rock album. But still no album that blew my mind.

Only listened to half so I'll give it a 3, I dont really love this genre but it was an interesting experience!

A few days I listened to a song or two, but just couldn't get into the album. A second listen is helping. Also figuring out where in time this album sits also really helps. I can understand the importance and what it influenced next. I know the old rockers not the stuff that made them famous, and honestly I think I understand why.

I just don't see what all the fuss is about - medicore at best.

Fun hard rock, none of the songs really stick out to me. I like Home Tonight a lot actually. Mostly a pleasant slog.

Never a fan.

i don't need to hear this again. but i did expect worse things.

Aerosmith was a good rock band back then.

An Early Aerosmith, Ok . 3,4.

Proper dad rock

Competent but clichéd hair rock.

Another Aerosmith album, and this time, I don't recognize a single song on it? Maybe they should have just thrown in some Scorpions instead at this point. Well, at least it's short.

That was fine. Good rock. Nothing notable.

Hate to rate it a 3 but I've never been the biggest Aerosmith fan.

I like it because it’s got groove and funk. It’s also only ok because the songs aren’t that great compared to the hits. It’s something I’d listen to but wouldn’t intentionally put on.

3 stars

Aerosmith's last great album before falling into relative obscurity until Run DMC pulled them out of the ashes in '86.

It's better than I thought it would be, given that I didn't really recognize any of the songs in the chart listing, even the singles. Not to say I don't like Aerosmith, but they once again showed not to judge their book by their cover. Still, the album is flawed. What it does well is bring some heavy, crunchy sounds - especially guitar. You can hear it on songs like Back in the Saddle, Last Child, Rats in the Cellar and Sick as a Dog - maybe even Get the Lead Out or Lick and a Promise. Like a precursor to hard rocks like Motorhead. But other songs were just kind of off - not bad, just not clicking the way the others did. So 4 songs I really dug, 3 not so much, and 2 I'm not quite sure. It feels like the album is at best a 3.5 and I just don't know if I can put it up there with other 4's.

Paree ku odotin

I knew Back in the Saddle, but never knew the name. Sick as a Dog is my favorite track. Objectively a good album, but like most stuff from the 70's not my style.

Back in the saddle is probably one of my favorite all time rock n roll songs. Unfortunately the rest of the album doesn't really keep up and is pretty on par with any other rock album from the 70s

Not Aerosmith's best (not sure if I've heard any of these songs before), but not bad.

Rocks is the fourth album by American rock band Aerosmith. This hard rock album released to mixed critical reviews and commercial success and was certified platinum off preorders alone - it has since gone quadruple platinum. Modern reviews rate this album highly as one of Aerosmith's best. Rocks was released during the peak of Aerosmith's touring in the mid 70's so it performed well and inspired many other artists including Guns N' Roses, Metallica, and Nirvana. I thought Rocks - although heavy and rockin' - was just more of the same Aerosmith songs from their previous album. I know not all bands are going to evolve and release something experimental, and it was still good at the end of the day. If you're a fan of rock n' roll, then you'll love this Aerosmith album.

enjoyed it way more than i thought. very masculine - i’m not the demographic. 3.4.

Well, it's ok. I've never been a gigantic Aerosmith fan, but it's more than adequate as far as rock 'n roll goes.

Really good. 3.5/5 Standouts: Back in the Saddle, Last Child Others: Home Tonight

Bits of something more sprinkled in the lesser know tracks, but overall average Aerosmith production. 2.9/5

'Back in the Saddle' is a great track and the rest of the album is chilled

Not a single bad song on here, but no big tunes either unfortunately. Solid listen

I am indifferent

I grew up listening to heavy metal, but never Aerosmith. American bands like them or Kiss and so on just never really appealed on the other side of the Atlantic. This was OK though. Better than I feared it might be anyway. Enough bits of blues and boogie to make it listenable to, although I probably won't seek out any more of it.

Not their best but Back in the Saddle elevates this.

Decent. Aerosmith is a little overrated, IMO, but this is a decent album. 3/5

this is an actually pretty good rock n roll album. good and hard guitar tones. crispy and light. killer bass lines. the lead song and single is just a downright good song. aerosmith is supposed to be campy trash. but this album, no. this is what acdc wishes it was. big while avoiding themoitfalls of cornball dumbness and guitar. you can tell they listened to a stooges album or two.

3.3 Nice, decent, slightly exceeded expectations faves: back in the saddle

It was fine.Perfectly serviceable rock. Not a single banger though.Plain was bread.

Definitely Aerosmith, didn't have any of the hits (that I know) but exactly the formula I expected. Runtime is short enough to enjoy it all the way through but can't say I wanted any more. It was alright, Aerosmith are alright, next album please.

The lyrics are a bit silly and earnest, but it really isn't as bad as I was fearing. Quite funky. Rats in the Cellar was probably my favourite. Would I go back? No.

I don't hear anything that makes this album distinct or innovative comparatively to Toys in the Attic, which is already on the list. Back in the Saddle is a bitchin' opener, sure. But Aerosmith isn't exactly known for being poetically, lyrically, or musically significant in any real way. They're just a bunch of hard partying dudes having a good time and making mediocre music in the process. It's fine, but it's not special. 90's revival/sellout Aerosmith at least gave us some iconic music videos.

Pretty good

Some good riffage, and it services it's purpose of teenager cock rock reasonably successfully. But it's dull...

Enjoyable rock (possibly bordering on hard rock), but I don't think it's very memorable

It's not a bad listen, but it is fairly generic mid-seventies rock that other bands did considerably better. Kind of like the Stella Artois of this kind of stuff, no-one will object to a pint of it without being especially thrilled to see it's the only thing on offer.

Too much butt, not enough rock.

Underwhelming, if I'm honest. A lot of the tracks sounded really similar. I enjoyed some of the solo guitar stuff, but I could not replay this album and be fine with it. They didn't seem to find their sound with this one.

I wanted more. 3.5 stars but can't express that so 3

70s rock by the numbers. Neither bad nor good, no standouts. 2.5/5

I don't know, Aerosmith is fine. This album was pretty good, I just don't prefer Steven Tyler's way of singing.

Had a great rock sound but on first listen nothing brilliant outside of a nice rock playlist, on it's own i'm not sure I could pick song that had a lot of individuality.

Nice artwork. Gives you the idea that you're in for a nice hard rock ride--one that's gonna push all your buttons if you're up to that sort of thing. But does that cover hold all of its promises? "Back In The Saddle" and "Last Child" have slick main riffs and a mean groove, I'm not gonna lie. "Rats In The Cellar" then accelerates the pace, but to no great effect, unfortunately, this track being a meat-and-potatoes hard boogie rocker that doesn't sound very fresh or original. Besides, Steven Tyler's vocals sound weird on this one, buried in the mix as they are... "Combination" then heads back to the sleazy rhythms of the first two tracks, yet it doesn't really add anything relevant to the whole picture. "Sick Of The Dog", the track that follows, is far more memorable, though. It's the third highlight of the album, with an effective and lively outro section. "Nobody's Fault" then attempts to imitate Led Zeppelin--with various results depending on which moment of the song you're talking about, but still quite successfully overall. Next, the boogie routine returns with "Get The Lead Out"--the word "boogie" being even quoted in the lyrics. Said routine can wear your patience a little thin at this point, at least depending on the mileage you have on those types of hard rock shenanigans. However, the outro section, with its long droning sound, is interesting--it's as if Aerosmith chose the option radically opposite to your usual solo-driven conclusion, and it's a choice that aged well, I think. "Get the Lead Out" is not a highlight, sure, but it's still ten times better than the stinker that pops up right after it, "Lick And A Promise", a cheesy, hackneyed cut going "na na na na" at the end. Quite annoying. And how many times are you gonna repeat the word "boogie", Steven? Finally, "Home Tonight" ticks the necessary hard-rock-ballad box, but the song is unfortunately far less moving and far more mundane and "functional' than stellar "Dream On" on Aerosmith's debut. Speaking of other Aerosmith recordings, I noticed that *Rocks* is not even among the most popular albums the band released on Spotify. If casual fans don't go to that one that much, does that mean that contemporary rock critics were actually right to point out this record was still some sort of post-breakthrough slump? Let's see... Four highlights, pretty good but not the stuff legendary rockers are made of, five middling tracks, and one clear stinker... This, out of nine songs, doesn't scream "essential" to me. And side two is quite a slog to go through, even if this LP is short. I'd rather listen to a greatest hits album, to be honest. 3/5. (8/10 for purposes more general than the ones this aims at: 5 + 3) Number of albums left to review: 578 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 201 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 97 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 126 (including this one)

Better than I thought

Particolare

Always loved 70s rock but always felt that Aerosmith were just overshadowed by other bands. I was pleasantly surprised with this album. Really good bass lines throughout, strong guitar, and impressive vocals. Song lyrics and direction could be a more creative. Everything is good, but nothing is mind blowing. 3/5 Favorites: Back in the Saddle, Rats in the Cellar, Combination, Least Favorites: Get the Lead Out, Lick and a Promise

It's fairly proficient mid-70's rock. Slightly Glam and played with a swagger. Also pretty safe- no rough edges and an enjoyable listen. Nothing special though.

Wait, Aerosmith did something other than "Dream On" in the '70s? That's... interesting. Especially knowing that it's hard rock and not power ballad as I expected. Still, not as impressive as it is fascinating. Decent, but quite generic.

I can't even THINK about Back in the Saddle without that song getting stuck in my head. Aw, shit, here we go again. I'M BACK.

A consistent rock album throughout but to me the songs were quite monotonous and sounded really similar to each other.

3/5 Quintessential 70's rock/borderline metal? It was an ok album but it sank into the background with the kind of generic electric guitar solos you'd expect. Meh.

It's 70s rock and so not my first choice of music. Well performed and made but it's not something I'll run back to. Steven Tyler is also someone I cannot stand and so this may have flavoured my view...

It was fine. A well-done 70s rock album. Not my bag, baby.

Rocks is a gritty and powerful record that showcases the band's musicianship and songwriting prowess. Released in 1976, the album features a raw and unpolished sound that captures the band's bluesy, hard-rocking style. One of the highlights of the album is the ballad "Home Tonight," which showcases Tyler's soulful singing and the band's ability to deliver a powerful, emotional performance. Another standout track is "Nobody's Fault," a heavy, riff-driven song that features some of Perry's most inventive guitar playing. Rocks is definitely aclassic album that has stood the test of time and, whilst it’s nothing super special, does it’s job of delivering a good rock experience.

Not an Aerosmith fan but this album was tolerable

TIL aerosmith does not totally suck

- Authentic rock guitar sounds (fast, loose, driving) - Steven Tyler has such a unique voice made for rock - Songs have that classic rock driving, forward moving beat - The kind of music for a montage of drinking beer with the boys

Enjoyed this. Much prefer ‘rock Aerosmith’ to ‘ballad Aerosmith’. Rhythm section was tight. 3.5 stars.

biais de lassitude ou jsp

Starts big and fizzles out.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, quite a decent record Favourite song: Track 6 - Nobody’s Fault

yeah yeah 3.5

Good, straight forward

Quite like the younger Tyler's voice and his range is impressive without sounding like a banshee. Interesting to read that there was a LOT of drugs involved in this album. A very coherent album without the mess you'd expect of a drug-addled production. Quite short too, which is nice. The longest song is under 4:30 long. Surprising that this went platinum on release and eventually QUADRUPLE platinum, obviously buoyed by their prolific touring and live fanbase, it's good but not that good. Very genre-classic galloping riffs, call and response vocals, chunky pub rock chord sequences, bit of Zep influence, bit of Maiden influence, bit of scuzzy mid-70s NWOBHM. Probably best enjoyed drunk at a concert.

A decent party record, with swagger to spare. The rhythm section is probably the strongest element.

Pretty good classic rock. I feel like they deserve some props for their pop sensibility and having the decency to keep the album under 35 minutes. I’m also pretty sure there was only one guitar solo on the whole album. Who’da thunk it?

Solid Rock album. Unfortunately I found it a rather generic with nothing too standout. 3/5.

Mediocre

Prima muziek maar niet heel bijzonder als ke het mij vraagt. Zit een beetje tussen harde rock en softe rock in, maar is dus net niks. Het begin is nog wel prima, maar richting het eind wordt het steeds minder interessant.

A decent enough album.

What's to say about this one. It's another Aerosmith album, which means that it both has some really good songs on it as well as a bunch of generic blues rock. It's not bad, but if someone put this record on a party I would listen for the first two songs and then spill beer all over the record player 3/5

Ehhh it's fine. Not my jam. 2.5/5

This was decent, I guess early Aerosmith is better than the later stuff where Tyler’s voice sounds like a wailing cat. Joe Perry was great on this and my favourite moments may have been Tyler’s harmonica bits. Sick as a Dog was a creepy weird tune, maybe I misread what it was about but I doubt it. The closing track Home Tonight is one of the few rock ballads I enjoyed. Decent album, 3 stars

It was fun but didn't blow me away.

Liked this a lot more than I thought I would. A solid album.

tedious rawwwwk

I'm not a big fan of Aerosmith, but there is no denying they have put out some great music. This album has Back in the Saddle, but is otherwise just a precursor to hair music.

Sounds like I expected it to lol. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it.

A good introduction to Aerosmith. None of their hits but a nice, well-rounded, guitar heavy set of tunes. Some would say it "Rocks". 😐🔫

like...its fine?? idk just a bit meh. like the equivalent to a digestive biscuit

It was OK.

I didn't expect a band like Aerosmith, which is known for "Dream On" and Armageddon songs to have such a diverse and mature album, especially this early in their career. If I would listen to this album without knowing what it is, I would guess The Rolling Stones. The record has inspired many band and artists, like Kurt Cobain or Slash. What is the reception right now? In my opinion - rather unspectacular. The songs on the album are very much infused in 70s hard rock style. Plenty of blues/rock riffs, some really great guitar solos and surprisingly good vocal by Steven Tyler (whom I remember only as an old man). I'm not a big fan of this album, or of this band at all. It was fun to listen to this piece of history, but to be frank, its place is in the books on the shelf now. That's all.

Not my favorite sound but well put together

Good old fashioned rock and roll

16-year-old me is disappointed I'm not giving this a higher score. Best track: Back in the Saddle

6/10. I actually liked this album, but was disappointed it didn't have more to do with rocks. Also the first song was fucking miserable, why does he have to shriek like a Nazgûl every few seconds? Is the song about the black riders of Sauron getting back in the saddle? I doubt it, and I'm not going to relisten to find out.

Bland but listenable. 6/10

Good pure rock. Nothing stands out as amazing, but a collection of good songs.

This is... and Aerosmith Album, not their finest I feel like, but solidly classic rock sounding.

As good as it gets for a hard rock album: well done!

I didn’t have it just in the background but my mind treated it as background filler. Typical Aerosmith 3/5.

Fast paced rock n’ roll, my kinda style. It’s fun, peppy, and a bit generic. There’s not much to say here other than those few words. Only other thing I thought was that it could’ve been a bit longer. Favorite track: Nobody’s Fault

It's fine, not their best though

The album is 35 minutes which is perfect. I knew a couple of the songs. The album is classic Aerosmith: loud guitars, loud/screaming vocals, and some underwhelming songs. The album started off fairly strong and got weaker. It is better than a 3, but not quite a 4. I will round down.

Not as good as the previous album and not nearly the catastrophe theyd become. A solid piece of ‘70s funk rock and hits just as hard now as it did back then. Enjoyable even if none of the songs stick with you past the runtime.

First, not an Aerosmith fan. Just never was. Much like Def Leopard before with Hysteria. And yet Aerosmith is just part of your upbringing in late 70s to 90s in some places. Back in the Saddle (How was this not used in Young Gun 2 in some way?), Rats in the Cellar, Nobody's Fault are all notable tracks for me. But not nearly as iconic for me as Hysteria was so going for a middle of the road 3 stars on this one.

C'est Rock et explosif, du 'rock and Roll', la voix, la guitare/drum/bass, tout est là. C'est peut-etre trop Classique Rock pour moi... Pourtant ... 3.15

Yea it's alright. Didn't realise Airbourne owed them so much

Rehtiä rockia! Omalla listalla ei kyseisen orkesterin tuotoksissa pääse kyllä lähellekään kärkeä, mutta varsin viihdyttävä levy.

All timer

I nearly gave this a 4. As advertised, it rocks. Has a very modern sound, and immediately recognizable as distinctively Aerosmith. Tyler's vocals are on-point throughout, and they do a great job getting mileage out of their 2-guitar attack without bashing you over the head with it (similar to Mick Taylor-era Stones). Just lacking a little on the songwriting, only a couple are really catchy.

3.5 stars Classic hard rock. Standout is "Back in the Saddle".

They were just another band out of Boston... Oh wait, that was yesterday. So, I'll split the difference. I like this album and, in particular, I like the songs that lean a little darker and rawer than the singles. "Combination" and "Nobody's Fault" are standouts to me. I've always had a soft spot for the 90s MTV pop rock version of this band and their Alicia Silverstone videos, but when I'm tired at 11pm on a Wednesday I am much more in the mood for the version of Aerosmith that sounds like they haven't sleep in 4 days. They sound like Boston if Boston hadn't showered in a week. The tunes aren't as catchy as they would be later on, but there's some stank on this album that I appreciate.

Pretty good but not great.

Good. not my favorite album of theirs but quintessential Aerosmith.

This was just okay to me. I guess, I’m only down with the stuff they came out with after this.

Bra men ikke så mye spennene

Tight band.

Dude looks like a lady.

meh osea bien! pero do i care? naaa. 7 / 10

A couple of catchy songs.

S'écoute bien sans plus

Im fairly familiar with most albums/song by Aerosmith. But I don't know any of the songs on this album! The album starts rather rocky, with a somewhat omnius intro, the style makes you think this album is gonna be filled with serious song. That is, till the yodeling starts at the end of the first song.. you're reminded immediately that you're listening to Aerosmith lmao. The song Lick And A Promise underlines that thought as well. The next couple of songs vary in style like 'Last Child', which is more like a Lenny Kravitz style funk/rock song. And Rats In The Cellar's style is more like a Blues Brothers style rock song. While Nobody's fault is almost a hard rock, Led Zeppelin kinda song including the heavy riffs.. Overall the album is fairly heavy compared to the previous albums and it's understandable why this album was such a big influence.

Solid music and some great guitar but scream rock isn't my bag so the vocals (while iconic) kept me from giving this a four

Really wish we had half stars. I enjoyed this but not quiet 4 starts for me. I've not listened to much Aerosmith beyond the hits so this was fun to listen to. 3.5 Stars.

Good album

It's fun or whatever, not really my thing tho.

Never was a huge fan of Aerosmith but this album isn't horrible. It's just middling for me, has some interesting vocal performances but it's not for me.
