I’d kill you for Pantera. I’d kill Pantera for myself… RARARARAR LOVE RRAR LOVE RARR LOVE RAR RARARAAR LOVE RRAR LOVE RARR LOVE RRAR First half is very groovy, very aggressive and laden with some classics although the ones on Cowboys From Hell are still probably better. Second half gets a bit chuggier and samier although overall this is still a vulgar display of goodness for the groove metal genre. A lightly vulgar 4 stars.

sometimes you want to listen to angry music

I’ve never heard the whole album before; but I really liked it!

First time listener; new convert lover.

14 year old me is very excited about this. 40 something me still is enjoying it, but at a much lower volume. 🤣

Loved this. Favorites were: "Walk," of course, and "Hollow," which really stood out to me from the rest of the album - felt very Metallica-adjacent yet not derivative or generic. I also really appreciated that this was an album that felt succinct and compact despite its 53-minute run; there wasn't a single song I'd trim from the album for it to feel like a cohesive project.

Displaying my power with a vulgarity that led to me flip kicking a hole into my wall after hitting a hearty 2 step 😤 Phil, Dimebag, Rex, and Vinnie did something really special here! 4 because This Love is just Cemetery Gates and Cowboys from Hell combined, but worse. Rock on and RIP Jazz Cabbage Receptacle 🤘🙂‍↕️🤘

hell yeah

You know I was gonna rate this a little lower and give some dumbass justification about how even though some of my most listened to albums from middle and high school owe their lives to Pantera, that y’know it just isn’t for me anymore But fuck that noise. This shit fuckin rips. It’s loud, aggressive, and hard. It’s not a perfect album but I don’t think pantera gives a shit about perfect albums. You can’t listen to this and NOT headbang and find something to be angry about

Pantera er en av favorittene fra før. Gøy gjenhør, terningkast 5

(79/100)

Good gym background music. Never really listened to Pantera before.

Solid heavy.

Classic

good stuff, wish they weren't a racist

Painless. Entirely decent album.

4 stars

RIP Dimebag. Simply enjoy this album only because of his legendary riffs and solos

Really excellent. Liked a lot more than the Pentangle group record.

I really liked this when it came out, but oddly really never came back to it over the years. This was a good listen for me.

Classic metal anthems.

Very heavy! Although it comes across as “alternative” rock, something about the notes reminded me of Megadeth. Anyway, grr!

Meaty, visceral, but most of all Metal! Turn up to 11!

Never think of them as a full album band because the stand outs really STAND OUT. I mean Walk has one of the most iconic metal riffs of all time. I always forget about This Love which really got me this listen. Anyways shout out the Abbott brothers they really shine on all of Pantera’s work and truly made the band unique (RIP)

This album kicked me in the balls and I liked it.

this shit rocks, 4/5

Not easy to mix groove with anger, but they do it well. Had a surprisingly good time with this one, my only complaint is the singer trying to do too much.

Pretty dang rad. RIP Dimebag Darrell.

Dumb but kinda awesome

Some pretty good heavy metal. Think I liked it a little bit better when I was younger but still rocks hard.

1000 percent what it advertises. If you’re looking for melody or high fidelity, this ain’t it. But if you’re looking for a feeling of raw power and emotion, this is it. I wish they recorded it more fully - it’s midrange and treble but that’s was the style in those days. In Justice For All made it that way. “Walk” is an anthem. So good. Not a record for every day but if you need this it is perfect.

I’m not the biggest Pantera fan, but this album is very solid - front to back. The Abbots (RIP) are so on point and Phil at his least annoying. In my personal collection and my favorite from them.

Obviously, this is not the most sophisticated music or lyrical content, but it is metal. It is raw, fast, aggressive, emotional in its own way, and it still holds all of that along with its impact and influence. In a lot of ways, it may not hold up for most people, but it does in other ways, as it still remains what it was.

Man! I haven't listened to this album since college. What a righteous jam! It sounds loud AF even if you listen to it quietly. For me, though, the ceiling for an album like this is four stars, simply because of the sameness of it all. But it hits that ceiling with authority. Or should I say . . . a vulgar display of power.

This album has been in my rotation since I first bought it in 1992. It doesn't hit quite as hard on the 10,000th listen as it did on the 1st, and I still find some of the guitar solos a tad Onanist for my tastes, but the anger and aggression still make my day better every time I listen. Possibly one of the best albums to punch Nazis to.

I've never been a huge fan of Pantera, but I did own "Far beyond driven" growing up, and honestly the difference between that and "Vulgar display of power" is so big that I find it hard to imagine what happened in the less than two years that passed between them. Vulgar Display of Power is a solid album, but I really prefer the tighter more coordinated grooves of later releases.

4 stars on music. Bonus stars for Dimebag Darrell's insane guitar all removed due to singer being a loser.

This was actually awesome and uplifting? Lol could that be true

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I love metal but never really got into the thrashy stuff like this back in the day. Tasty riffs. The vocals were occasionally grating but decent overall. This review is dedicated to Jason, some guy who lived in the same apartment building as me in 2013. Back then I put out pen and paper at the front door asking people to sign in with their name and a song. Of the 8 people who did it, Jason signed in with Walk by Pantera (from today’s album). Jason, I hope you are well.

HFY man first time listening to this outside the gym and my arms still started swelling after

A new level - sick opening riff, metal guitar is unbeatable. Walk is of course the big hit, and i can see why, such a good riff. Dimebag is an insanely good guitarist. Would be nice to play some of his stuff one day. Lyrical performance in This Love was really cool. Outro was unique as well.

Very much of its time. Back then, and innovative blend of extreme metal and groove, now a little dated. Musically, dimebag is one of the greatest guitaristsever and the rhythm section is tight AF. Phil is...being his usual ranty self? A5 least I assume he wasn't on heroin by this point. The first half of the album is about as good as groove metal can get, with every song an absolute classic. The second half doesn't hold up anywhere near as well. I'll quite happily never hear Rise, No Good or Live in a Hole ever again, but up until then it's flawless. A 4, both in quality and importance.

Beautiful music and always a pleasure to listen to Amy whainehouse and a lot more RnB focused which only brought more pleasure

good sounding thrash metal, never listened to these guys before and i don’t mind it, not as good as other bands in the genre but a respectable album that you can just put on if you’re in that mood, respect

Why original review sticks: "I like Pantera, I’ve listened to a few of their tracks and have some of them in my playlists. Not really listened to much else, so this was relatively new. I liked it. It was powerful, heavy and angry. 4 stars for me, enjoyable enough."

I loved this when it came out, and periodically revisit it. Really strong groove metal album, and Dimebag’s (although he was still Diamond at this point) shredding is outstanding. Phil Anselmo has proven to be a bit of an, erm, ‘difficult character’, and listening to some of the lyrics here with awareness of some of his apparent views does really make you wonder. However, having said that, it’s still a great album. RIP Vinnie and Darrell.

Another case of separating the art from the artist. This felt revolutionary when it came out but took me a few listens to get it

Slaps. The older I get the more I like metal.

I almost skipped this album entirely. About 30 seconds into the semi-screamo vocals of the first song I was ready to say 'not my thing' and skip-listen through the rest of the tracks. But, I ended up hearing the whole thing out and I'm glad I did. After I got used to the intense vocals, I started to hear the musicality. It's a bit too intense for too long to hold a place on my frequent listening list, but it does feel like exactly the kind of album you want to put on when you're pissed off at the world and just need to rage. Walk is an absolute anthem.

I liked this a lot. The singer is the weakest link, though. I like how clean the guitar and drums sound. Clean maybe isn’t the right word but it’s not muddied down like a lot of metal bands do with their stuff.

Classic, pure metal. Impossible not to head bang.

I asked my husband if he listened to this album in the 90s. He said yes, and that it was their best. I liked some of the songs and added them to my library.

Solid album, but after a while I started losing concentration. Really liked This love tho

Some serious riffage laid down on this album. Some of the solos Dimbag plays are face melting. The "groove" label is interesting, comes through on This Love, but the sound is majorly punk / thrash. Sadly, Phil Anselmo is a c*** and I can't see past it. I don't understand what he's trying to say on No Good (Attack the Radical). That people should move past America's history of racism?

I think most agree this is the best Pantera album. I suppose I agree.

IT WAS PERFECT FOR MY MORNING SHIFT

They're jackhammering the road outside my window and this is the perfect thing to have on my headphones to drown it out. Pantera takes the speed and aggressiveness of thrash metal and puts a bit of southern stank on it with riffs that have a sludgy heavy swing to them. You can see why the Nu Metal guys stole this formula and just popped it up a bit to make it a touch more accessible. Fun guitar and bass playing from the full blast high octane solos that never overstay their welcome to the full bore downtuned chugging. Punishing drumming, he's kicking the shit out of the kit. The vocals range from agonized wretching screams to horrifying guttural growls, spewing out mad at the world dumb guy lyrics - good stuff, shame he's a shithead nazi. Ending with a terrible ballad is a hilarious move - who is that for?! lol

high energy heavy metal music. there's plenty of albums that i've personally reviewed that make you want to headbang and this one is probably the most INSANE example of that. it's torture to not move your head up and down. compared to other anti-authority and political metal bands, this one is just straight up aggressive to the core. less "fuck the world we're in", more "fuck you dude i wanna deck you in the face". it gets fast but it's never messy, it's all planned out neatly from start to finish.

Good, old metal, methodical and constant

Album starts off with power, ends with power. The whole thing is a vulgar display of power. And confidence. Just saw these guys open for Metallica in Santa Clara. They still rock even though Dimebag and Vinnie are no longer with us. Zakk Wylde is a fine replacement for Dimebag though. This album though... should be in the Bible of Metal albums you must hear if you even think about calling yourself a fan of heavy metal. 3.77/5 = 4 stars.

Don’t go for all his politics but the music is good

Oh fuck yeah it’s been a while since there was a good metal album on here, and I enjoyed the hell out of this one. Never listened to Pantera before but obviously I’ve heard a lot about them, and after listening to this album I totally get it. May run it back a time or two before the day is over. Must-listen #158.

First listen, although I was vaguely aware of Pantera; Dimebag Darrell being a well regarded guitarist before his murder, and Phil Anselmo a huge douche. I really dug this. Not high art, but more variety and groove than I expected.

Aggressive

Probably one of the best metal albums oat. Don’t think there was single bad song on the album. My personal favorite song was hollow.

Used my mouth for war

Heavy riffs aggressive lyrics great music for gym walk is and always will be one of the greatest riffs of all time happy to have my first metal album looking forward to more

I like pantera they make good heavy music

This only just a 4, more like a strong 3.5. Nothing much is really bringing back except the solos which were wicked. But most the songs themselves are pretty forgettable

While a genre that is generally more favorable personally, this didn't quite hit the heights that were hoped for. It still earned a 3.5/5 which will be elevated to 4 for the purposes of distinguishing it from the other votes of 3 which it mostly surpassed. A better balance in vocal strength and instruments would have elevated the album, however the instruments at times over powered periods of vocals.

There are better Pantera albums, but Vinnie Paul is a fuggin legend

La voce da "io so' semibbrutal, mi ascolto i gruppi death metal" stranamente non mi irrita. Molto bella "This Love" e in generale è molto ascoltabile.

Somewhere I saw that this is "groove metal." Folks get pretty nerdy about metal subgenres, but I can hear this. Sounds pretty basic in some ways, but probably cause everyone after was imitating. Lyrics about what you'd expect from angry texan and texan adjacent young men I guess.

I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump down to a 4. Admittedly, I don’t think I have a big soliloquy in me on this one. I think this is a great, great album that just doesn’t quite hit the same bloodrush of intensity as some of the other heavy metal albums we’ve gotten on the list so far. With bands like Black Sabbath, Metallica, Judas Priest, or AC/DC, I’ve found a really nice flow state where I’m in total sync with the band while listening, and I just never got there with this one. Realistically, it’s a multitude of small things that add up. The mixing is awkward in a few spots, & in those moments, the guitar/drums don’t have the presence necessary to fill up the soundscape. The vocals are occasionally too homogeneous in their delivery to the point where the screaming tone totally blanks out the lyrics. Perhaps most egregiously, I think the level of repetition on a good chunk of the outros here makes each track overstay its welcome; not too badly, but just enough to feel annoying. It would be less of an issue if a few tracks didn’t also have intros that last way too long. Those give an immediate “first minute is the whole song” sort of impression that’s hard to shake off. With all of that said, this is still kickass heavy metal, and I’d totally be at a 5 if these things were cleaned up. They’re just too persistently bothersome for me, but this is still a 4, bare minimum. The fact that this has an average below 3 on the site tells me that people either really hate 90s heavy metal, or those issues I mentioned are just amplified to a crazy degree for them. Regardless, I liked this a lot, but it’s just got too many little things for me to give it a 5, at least not on a first pass. It could totally go up though. It’s still a pretty recommended 4, though.

Vulgar and powerful, indeed. This can get you hyped, no matter how old it is or how old you are.

The first couple of tracks really blew me away. The guitar sound was just STELLAR. Like almost literally unbelievable. I don't know how I missed this band as a kid... maybe I wouldn't have been ready for it, I don't know. Regardless I was very impressed - They seemed to ditch some of the silly trope-y stuff of 80's metal and stick to the essence of what makes metal great. This record was very impressive on all fronts musically - great vocals, great bass, great drum parts, AMAZING guitar work (seriously just killer). The second half of the record was not as awesome for me - a bit too 'nu metal' I guess? The guitar work stayed phenomenal though. 3 tracks in I was ready to give this a 5 but I was back down to earth by the end of the record.

April 19, 2025 Album #594: Vulgar Display of Power by Pantera Genre: Groove Metal Keeping up with the Metal streak, I’ve only ever listened to Pantera with that one SpongeBob episode they collaborated on, haha. However, their classic album, *Vulgar Display of Power*, is my first time ever giving them a serious listen. I’m happy to say that I enjoyed myself while listening. Just listening to this I can tell the influence this had on 90s and 2000s Metal. Phil Ansemlo’s melodic yet angry and enthralling vocal performance is awesome here. His yelling contrasted with the ballads on this album show his skill, which I respect. My favorite performance from Phil here is probably on the closer, *Hollow*. It’s a genuinely touching song that only hits deeper when you understand the song’s background, and Phil’s vocals only amplify that. With that in mind, Phil’s amazing yelling being paired with Dimebag Darrel’s extremely raw guitar tone makes for an amazingly good combo. Darrel’s playing is tight, raw, and aggressive. One of my favorite songs on the album, *Rise*, shows this at its extreme, and it’s awesomely heavy. I also appreciate Rex Brown on Bass, especially on the song *Walk*, it being one of Pantera’s most well known songs. Its chorus is very memorable and catchy. That said, there were tracks I thought were just meh, like *Regular People*. However, this album is still very cool regardless of that. I’d still recommend giving this album a listen, it’s a metal classic and I can fully understand why. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, Strong 7 to a Light 8 Favorite Tracks: Mouth of War, A New Level, Walk, Fucking Hostile, Rise, No Good (Attack The Radicals), Live In a Hole, By Demons Be Driven, Hollow

I really liked Pantera in the late 90s, and preferred the album "Far Beyond Driven".

90s sounds — gotta love ’em! This album is once again one of those base-camp records for my musical taste. The hit songs might feel a bit worn out, but overall, I just really like this one.

While familiar with this album, it was never in heavy rotation, as by 90's I was deep in the extreme/death metal scene and "normal metal" had very little appeal to me. So basically I heard this album song by song from bar jukeboxes and DJs playing it. It's got hooks, a dry sound that was popular in the 90's and it's massively lacking in the bottom end of the soundspectrum. Give me Bolt Thrower any day all day. This however is a decent album, it was very important to many of my friends and did do well in general. Personally I just do not have any passion to go with it.

Endelig litt metal hihi

I appreciate them bringing thrash metal to the fore after Metallica' Black Album. It's needed. I personally am not a fan of speed metal. But racism is absolutely not needed. Hallow, however, is a great mix of genres. 3.5/5

It's raw and visceral and so much dumb fun (even if they're uh, problematic these days)

heavy af. makes me want to be 16 wear eyeliner and flip off my parents and do kickflips and steal some dweebs lunch money

A very timely album. Having listened to a lot of Pantera recently and seen them live for the first time ever.

Son and husband jammed out to this in the car. Maybe they made this more of a 4 than a 3. 4/5

I like Pantera, I’ve listened to a few of their tracks and have some of them in my playlists. Not really listened to much else, so this was relatively new. I liked it. It was powerful, heavy and angry. 4 stars for me, enjoyable enough.

Idk why, but I actually fw Pantera's music in general. I think the two albums that came after Vulgar Display of Power are better, but this is still an overall great album with some of the band's best songs. Mid 9

Classic thrash album. Dude's will hear this and say "hell yeah". I saw many shows at the venue where Dimebag Darrel was killed and it definitely looked like a venue where someone would get shot at.

Pretty good overall. Excellent instruments, acceptable vocals.

One of the best metal albums I've heard, a nice balance of tunes that never verges into pastiche or cheesiness. I prefer these guys to Metallica.

tenes q estar en el mood, pero si estas; obviamente es de lo mejorcito q hay

Fantastic power tunes, especially the first half (Side A, if you will).

Understand why this album is on the list but I like my metal with a bit more self awareness and humor. Much of these songs lyrically are very similar which is kind of what defines this band but I think the best parts of this album are when the musicians are playing. I liked regular people. Generally something I only listen if someone else really likes this type of metal.

I haven’t listened to this record very much since its release back in ‘92, but I have to admit that I enjoyed this album a lot more than I remembered from 30+ years ago. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-vulgar-display-of-power?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

One of the best metal albums of the 90s - Walk, A New Level, Hollow, Fucking Hostile and more. The trashiness of this album is excellent and Dimebag's guitar is unreal. RIP Dimebag and Vinnie.

I did not have high expectations for this album but it really impressed me. Probably the best metal album from the 90s

Classic metal album

Heavy with some excellent grooves. You can hear the influences (early Metallica, Suicidal Tendencies, Rollins, Judas Priest,…) and tell who was influenced in turn mid-90’s and beyond. On By Demons be Driven there is a definite ca-ll back to Judas Priest Breakin’ the Law. RIP Dimebag

Nice record no low points. I like some metal for sure.

I find it very strange that growing up in the 90s and early 00s and being primed to metal by way of Metallica and Sabbath that I never was exposed to Pantera outside of what few hits made it on the radio. For some reason I always viewed them as overtly aggressive and \"scary.\" And honestly a recent drive through their discography only reinforced that opinion. Something about the deep melodic riffs combined with outright aggressive lyrics and their deep throated vocals all make for a high Testosterone, blood up listen. Opener Mouth for War, is fine, but ultimately pretty forgettable. A New Level opens on a quintessentially Pantera riff. Deep and minor, used to build tension between thrashy sections. Unlike Metallica who diluted a lot pandering to radio appeal with the Black Album and beyond, Pantera sacrificed nothing with their image in their pursuit of success. Walk is a great example of this ability to command radio play while staying true to their roots. A driving and highly aggressive song built behind an absolute unit of a stepping riff. Hard not to feel like you can take on the world listening to it. This Love is the first song on the record that doesn't start out on a power riff or scream -- it nears "ballad" territory and reminds me a lot of 90s alternative band Days of the New. But this turns out to just be a wonderful feint as the song rips apart periodically into aggressive segments and turns completely inside out at the mid-point led by a riff that could be Cowboys from Hell pt II. Honestly love this song and its ability to play both sides of the coin. No doubt this was a great crowd song live. Live in a Hole is another favorite of mine on here. Welp, I thoroughly enjoyed that one. Great music for putting your head, fists, and feet through drywall to. In my opinion this is a high 4. Like an 8.8/9.0.

This album came out 1 day before I was born, so that's pretty neat. Always wanted to listen to this album but never got around to it. That is just some straight up no nonsense heavy metal. The power guitar riffs and crashing symbols absolutely melted my face. I really like metal that slows down during parts of the songs just to speed back up and bring the house down.

Ovo i far beyond driven su izumili moderni metal

Excellent. it was what i thought it would be but it was a high standard with a good few stand out tracks.

3.7 1x listened in Brazil driving back from Ilha grande. Songs all pretty similar but cool heavy vibe

81/100. A solid and consistent heavy metal album with powerful, hard-hitting music throughout.

The tracks sort of alternate with a song with some cringe lyrics and then a song that totally rips and makes me want to work out. But, when the songs are rippin', holy shit do they shred. Favorite tracks: Walk, Live In A Hole, By Demons Be Driven

I can’t really poke a hole in this album. Maybe that’s partly due to how out of my depth I am with anything metal. But this was fantastic. Obviously, Hollow is the clear highlight of the record. More melodic and refrained than most songs, which I think all metal/loud albums need a bit of. A stark, interesting contrast from Master Of Puppets that was recently the album of the day, in that VDOP here was often more introspective and lyrically based in reality. Really well done.

R.I.P. Dimebag Darrell Here lies Dimebag Darrell, creator of some of the heaviest guitar metal riffs of all time on Vulgar Display Of Power. Respect. Being gunned down in a shitty small club in Ohio is a terrible way to go. This album is a great way to blow off some angry feelings. Not something I seek out often, but it hit the spot today. Even when Pantera tried to show their softer side on This Love, they could only do it for 2 1/2 minutes. So many riffs are great, but Walk stands out. This album rocks so hard, it cuts diamonds.

Vulgar Display? Not really. But DEFINITELY a display of power. I am not a big metal guy, so I never listened to Pantera before, really. But I can definitely see where people are coming from when they talk about this band. Metallica^2, at the very least. I had heard "Walk" before, but in the context of the album it definitely hits harder. Very crunchy and harsh, really dug the groove. Will definitely be one I go to again. Weird, I listened to it on youtube and a number of songs had a good minute of space at the end. Top tracks: "Walk," "Rise," "F**king Hostile," "Mouth For War"

This is pulsing thrash metal. Dimebag Darrell puts his skills on full display - he kicks some serious ass. Rex nicely complements that guitar with his bass and Vinnie Paul pounds the drums in frenetic unison. Phil Anselmo is a flawed vocalist but does a respectable job for this half screaming genre. If you like heavy, you will love this album. This is not perfect and it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but it's a damn good heavy metal album. Some real bangers. Mouth for War, A New Level, Fucking Hostile, No Good, and By Demons Be Driven have slick heavy grooves. Walk and Rise are a different harder edge. Live in a Hole sounds like it took a page out of Alice In Chains' book. I wasn't a big fan of This Love - I know they were trying to do something different but it's a bit disjointed. Ditto Hollow - given that they wanted to make the heaviest album ever, I'm not sure why they went a little softer here. It would've fit right in with an Iron Maiden metal album of the 80's but it doesn't fit well on this album. Still, this album is a nice gateway between 80's heavy metal and 90's and 2000's nu metal and hard rock. I found myself reaching for a 5 but just couldn't go all the way.

Doesn't make me like metal, but when the couple songs when they play very fast, I get it. Appreciate the lyrics try to funnel anger to positive action.

Shifting right from blues to heavy metal on this list. This album name is very appropriate, as the content is moody, heavy-sounding, but also very groove-oriented in its construction. A bit of a departure from the speedier thrash metal sound that was prominent in the 80's. "Walk" is pretty iconic in those regards with its ever present riff, but other tracks such as "This Love" and "Hollow" play with tempo changes, eventually getting heavier as they near their respective close. My metal-listening experience is pretty limited, but I can acknowledge that this album is genre defining in that it marked a change in both Pantera's sound and in the heavy metal genre. Enjoyed this more than I expected to.

One of the most violently angry albums I have ever listened to and all the better for it.

really enjoyed this but just can’t pull the trigger on 5 bc of the grating vocals

I enjoy Pantera. I liked this album. I’ll listen to them again in the future. No clue what they were saying the whole time, but the riffs and other instrumentation fucking rocked. Felt almost cathartic to listen to. 4/5

I've somehow never heard any Pantera before (I didn't even know any of the Thundercats had solo careers) but I quite enjoyed that.

Proper thrash.

Metal \../ Awesome trashing tracks, but it's not the best metal album ever. It's good nonetheless.

did not expect that to be a W

Classic groove metal. Not crazy about the vocals, and some of the songs go on for too long, but love the drumming and riffage.

The riffs on this album by Dimebag Darrel are awesome. I had to begin my review with that. Pantera's early albums sucked so when "Cowboys From Hell" and this album came out, it was a godsend. I loved nearly all the tracks. But it did get a bit monotonous by the end. 4 stars for "Vulgar Display of Power".

Hard hitting record, but the biggest whiplash I experienced was going directly from this album to the fucking Penguin Cafe Orchestra.

Sometimes you don’t know why a band picked a certain album cover. Other times you feel it physically.

Title is incredibly accurate. This is just groove metal done amazingly

This brings me back to high school. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

About as brutal as you can get before you start to weird the normies out. Every instrument is tight as hell, with the performances aided by the snappy production. Vocals are also killer.

I can see it but still can’t get it to 5 stars.

Are we able to put aside Phil Anselmo's politics (if we may call them such) to appreciate this album in its fulness? After all, if we demanded our entertainers be saints, this would be more a case of '10 Albums Before You Die'. So - on the basis of the music alone, this is some great metal. Uncompromising, elemental - Pantera at their best managed to keep the ying and yang of 'heavy' and 'metal' in balance, but also infuse it with groove. The net result is a real prowler of an album, something that swaggers and prowls through the wastelands. 'Vulgar Display...' is damn heavy, because guitars are down-tuned without sounding sludgy and rhythms are crisp, instead of clattery. It is the sound of nations marching to war.

Great timing to listen to this as I was in a bad mood and needed some angry music to let the steam out. Pantera delivered with the exception of a few ballady songs that just didn't suit Phil Anselmo voice.

This was my first time listening to Pantera. I didn't hate it. I prefer the Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest type of metal, but I don't mind this or Metallica. It's heavier, but there's still melody and hooks. It's not fully into the tuneless thrash style of Slayer that I can't stand. Some of the lyrics are kind of sophomoric, and the constant wall of intense sound gets a little tiring toward the end of the album. "By Demons Be Driven" definitely rips off Judas Priest's Breaking the Law a bit. Dimebag Darrell's guitar solos are impressive, and I did like the overall positive message of most of the songs — turning your anger against an unjust system and calling for understanding instead of just aiming it at hate and destruction — although, Phil Anselmo is kind of problematic and some of the lyrics reflect some of his misguided views (No Good). I'll give it a 4, but it's probably closer to a 3.5

File under bludgeon!

Four stars for walk alone.

zeer goed album, met enkele regelrechte killers

Some very solid head bangers. Other quite dull droning.

Мне понравилось. Солист Фил конечно гандон, но мы тут и Кане Весту дали четыре. Лучшая песня - Fucking Hostile.

Good instrumentals and a solid metal album.

Year 10 me loved this album and i still think its a good album ,musically this album is amazing all the riffs and solos are really good and still hold up well, that being said the lyrics are a little edgy especially on songs like regular people and miss the mark sometimed imo but overall I think it works with the theme of the album. The stand out tracks for me would be walk, this love and mouth for war. Whilst it's not my favorite pantera album, I'd still argue it's a classic and its a shame its legacy has been tainted by the actions of Phil almenso Also it's a really fun listen if you've played the classic doom as a lot of the tracks are the same riffs.its a 4.5/5 for me so I'll round it down to 4 the tracks in the game are pretty much copies of riffs from this album

Honorary fredag! Kan godt blive lidt ensformigt men alt i alt noget pisse fed hegn. Kan ikke helt regne ud hvorfor de bliver ved med at RÅBE

An album I'm incredibly familiar with. One of the first 5-10 CDs I owned as a youngster (back in my metal days). It's a quality album all the way through with some stand-outs like Walk.

This is harder than I would have historically listened to, but I still found it to be pretty melodic and I enjoyed how tight the band was. My favorite track was This Love, though I also enjoyed Rise and Hollow.

Good solid thrash album, a great sound. Pantera really have taken over from Metallica when they "changed their sound" This album starts really strong but seems to lose its way a little, still good but not as punchy as the start

While I'm getting more tolerant of hardcore vocals over time, this album still felt like an assault on my ears at times. The drums are fucking awesome here, and there are some great metal guitar riffs, but I can't say I loved the experience as a whole. It's definitely a 3.5...and I guess I'm rounding up to a 4 for musicianship this time.

This and Cowboys From Hell we’re on heavy rotation (on cassette!) when I was 18. Nothing better than Pantera for a foul mood; it’s incredibly cathartic. I don’t know how many times I went hoarse trying to sing along with Anselmo. I haven’t listened to them much in the last several years, but it still holds up. Its a toss up which is the better of the two albums, but this has walk, so it probably has the edge. I never could get too into anything after this one though. It would get 5 stars from me if it weren’t for By Demons Be Driven. Never cared for anything along those lines. It’s a shame about Darrell.

Prime 90’s metal.

Just an awesome metal band/album with an all time banger in Walk!

Darrell's guitar sound is up from classic to legendary status. Anselmo abandons falsetto permanently. The first 5 songs are some best known, but the songwriting becomes less focused in the last half, similar to Cowboys from Hell. If Pantera hadn't come up with this, Nu Metal still would have been born, because of Faith no More & Mr. Bungle, even Helmet & some acclaimed funk rock/metal acts of 80s, 90s (Rage Against the Machine, for example) Fav Track: Mouth for War

Its 8 in the morning. *cry* I retract my cries because now I am headbanging at my desk. 4/5

This a favourite of mine. The cover is brutal and the record maybe isn’t as good as Cowboys from hell but it’s a solid album to blast out loud.

Silkkaa jalometallia!

the early 90’s was an interesting time in music. one of the genre’s that rose to prominence was referred to as “groove metal”, brought to us primarily through a band from texas called pantera. driving rhythms with harsh vocals and lightning quick solos. even when a song starts out sounding like more of a ballad (“this love”), by the time it gets to the chorus it’s heavy as hell. it really is amazing that a band this heavy was so popular in the mainstream at the time. solid album. highlights: "a new level”, “fucking hostile”, “hollow”

Jävligt heavy och groovy. Jag gillar de grooviga delarna och de mer lugna men är du inget stort fan av trash metal låtarna. Ett bra metal album dock med dynamik och såklart sjukt gitarrspel.

The essential Groove metal album, enough said. 9/10

My favorite Pantera album-a new level of confidence and power

Heavy heavy metal. Growling vocals over down-tuned riffing guitars. Fast and thrashy. A little repetitive at times, but this seems like definitional heavy metal.

This album is nostalgic for me. It was the peak of my strange headbanger phase in high school. For all the screaming the songs are pretty melodic, reminds me of Metallica or late Ozzy. The rhythms are great too. I never feel this level of aggression so I don't think I'll be going back to this album much, but I still like it.

Vulgar Display of Power... an apt description for a heavy time. Pantera does more than mark their territory, they do so while refining and redefining varying aspects of metal that was becoming dogged in then-recent time. It is no surprise, upon listening, how much of a vaunted album this is for the metal genre. Vulgar power indeed. Favorites: A New Level, Walk, Fucking Hostle, This Love, Rise, No Good (Attack the Radical), By Demons Be Driven.

I want to start the next french revolution and kick my mother in the face. Solid album.

Dude it's exactly what it says it is. A vulgar display of power. Do you like metal. I do. 8/10

This is definitely a vulgar display of power. Idk if I'm really into music as heavy as this as I once was, but there some really good riffs in this album.

Top tier metal. Walk is a classic.

Such awesome guitar work on this album. RIP dimebag. Incredible album!

Another classic. Awesome tone and sick riffs

I have not heard of this album but I have heard of Pantera being in the metal scene. The songs didn’t immediately grasp my interest but I might change my mind at another listen. The songs that did stand out to me were: Walk, This love, and Hollow. I will listen to this album again.

Pantera was one of the last artists I expected to see here. Metal isn’t exactly a very well represented genre on this list, which makes the few there are stand out. So I got excited to listen to this. Pantera was definitely a metal band I always wanted to check out. This album is fucking intense. I know, not saying much considering it’s metal. It has this incessant groove to it, which again isn’t saying much considering the genre is called groove metal. But every single song chugs along with these crushing riffs. And this groove is led entirely by Dimebag Darrell. Hailed as one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time, and rightfully so, he played the guitar with a power unlike any guitarist before him. Because all of the main guitar parts are very low, when he plays a solo, which is on almost every song, they are always very high and sharp, and they are glorious. Every other member is solid as well, especially Darrell’s brother Vinnie, who is a great drummer and matches his brother’s style perfectly. Anselmo is cool, but he does come off to me slightly as a bargain bin James Hetfield. And I’m sure Rex sounds great, but I can’t hear him in the mix. Like at all. If I can make out the bass on a Death record better than I can on this, that might be a problem. Just like the performances, the music itself is as solid as a brick wall. The sparing moments where it isn’t chugging along and is softer are nice, and still pretty intense, but I think this album is at its best when it’s going as hard as it can. Rating: 8/10

Not a thrash metal fan typically but this album has quite a few songs on it that I remember listing to growing up and they still hold up!

Pure rock

Self awareness is one of the greatest attributes of this album. If you’re in the mood for it, there’s hardly anything more suitable.

Dark dark dark. This is probably going to be the heaviest rock that we get on the 1001 albums list. Vinnie Paul shows here why he was considered among the best metal drummers to ever play. Clean on the fast parts. Massive on the slow parts. This brings a heat and rage that is not matched by any other genre. Unlike the storytelling you get with Iron Maiden or the confused existential soul-searching of Metallica, Pantera has an incessant raging emotional fire. Sonically crushing, creative, and astonishingly tight, this gives birth to some of the best metal to come after it: Gojira, Avenged Sevenfold, Lamb of God and Trivium among them. This album seems to have brought this sort of dark introspective hardcore more into the mainstream. Underground black and death metal existed at the time but it certainly wasn't as accessible as this or the early thrash of Metallica and Anthrax, etc. It's cool, though. A lot of newer genres rear their ugly heads: djent, prog, post-hardcore, melodic death metal, southern (think Mastodon or Baroness), and whatever it was that Alice in Chains was doing. Criticisms: can be same sounding, guttural screaming is a good effect when used sparingly but here Anselmo WANTS YOU TO HEAR HIM (fair enough given the subject matter), sometimes the subtlety sounds forced. Overall a good record with tons of intensity that I wish Pantera could have built on instead of started luxuriating in for most of the ret of their career.

dig it.

Pantera is not my favorite metal band. I love the groove, but not the southern pride crap. And while I respect their place in metal history, it's hard to overlook done if their bullshit. This is a good record however. Some really great host and vocal work.

Wow, this is great stuff! I so rarely listen to metal and it's many subgenres, so it's good for me to broaden my horizons and pay attention to music outside my usual listening habits. I need to listen to albums like this only a few tracks at at time because some of the songs get super-thrashy and after a while, it's a bit much for me. That's due to my conditioning and habits, of course, and I know the music I can listen to for hours on end would create the same experience for some listeners that I have with this music. To me, this has absolutely nothing to do with how "good" the music is (and "good" is in quotes because I really don't apply goodness or badness to art; I just experience it and go from there). These musicians are incredibly talented, no doubt. To play at those speeds and tempos with such precision...wow.

Aw, man. I wanted to hate this but it's really good for what it is. Not the biggest fan of the lyrics but the lyricism itself is pretty good. Most of all, though, the jams are just so on point. I can't give it full marks but I it's a very strong 4.

A metal/guitar classic.

Apparently I like Pantera more than I ever thought possible

Yes!!! Never listened to this album in its entirety and glad I have now. This album is perfect for metal heads in the gym, needing a little extra growl to get through that last rep.

This is like if music was violent diarrhea, but in a good way. There was a song in here that sounded like Nirvana and another that sounded like Faith No More. My usual problem with this kind of metal is that all the songs usually blend together in the end, so I'm glad they avoided that. And "Walk"? God damn.

This record and the album before, Cowboys From Hell, were truly eyeopeners in metal. At the time, metal was supposed to be fast. Death metal was the main style. This record was a step back to Metallica's ...And Justice For All, which sounds very similar to me, and then a step in the other direction. More focus on a New York Hardcore punk style groove (Cro-Mags, Prong, Biohazard, etc.). That being said, I never really liked Pantera. Favorite song: A New Level.

Heavy but great.. I was surprised how much I like this one!

I honestly thought Walk was by Metallica. This is going straight on the weightroom playlist

A super tight metal album with memorable songs (haven’t listened to it in over ten years and remembered just about everything).

Ohan tää tosi djent. Yks tähti on vaan pakko tiputtaa pateettisuudesta.

Pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. Will definitely listen to it again at the gym. Favourite songs were "Walk" and "Hollow", despite its shitty soft rock start

Great Album, but I definitely wasn't in a metal mood at my desk. Which didn't allow me to fully appreciate it. Coming back to this one later

8/10 Absolute powerhouse of a record. Staple of metal and endless supply of great riffs. If you look up "stank face" on Google, Walk by Pantera shows up. Still think Cowboys from Hell is better, though.

Not listened before but I actually thought this was a pretty enjoyable metal album. I think history has favoured Metallica who sound similar but had bigger hits. I thought the production/mixing was weird, the guitars seemed too loud in comparison with the drums when compared to other metal/rock/grunge from the early nineties but I’ll probably listen again when the mood takes me.

Ennen dissasin, mut kyllähän tää on ihan mainioo kamaa.

I enjoyed it as something a bit different. Walk was probably the highlight for me.

Really had a lot of fun with this one. Pantera plays hopscotch with the line that separates my enjoyment and being too heavy for me, but the tracks that fell on the right side of that line were awesome. Favorite track: Hollow

No okei, tykkäsin tästå enemmän kuin ehkä aattelin. Oli kyllä semmoista aika agressiota vapauttavaa tykitystä. Sopis lenkille. Huomas kanssa kyllä miten moni riffi kuullosti aika tutulta eli on kyllä influencannut muita bändeja. Walkin jälkeen muuttu paremmaksi ja Fucking Hostile oli (ehkä?) tuttu mutta helvetin kova

objektiivisuus kadonnut täysin, niin paska striikki päällä että tämä kuulostaa hyvältä.. saapas jalka metallika. mahdollisesti paskinta kynänviekkatyöskentelyä mitä koskaan kuultu... paljon ykkösarvosteluja tykkäilty, ei millään ole niin huono, siinä vasta subjektiivisuttta konsanaan (EI TAIDE EI OLE SUBJEKTIVE, YKSI MAHDOLLINEN VASTAUS KAIKKEEN...) janiin I was a teenage dirtbag in the traditional sense: a weird, cigarette smoking metal head; a total societal misfit. HOLY FUCK THIS GUY... ROUGH CHILDHOOD... NOT FITTING IN... CRAZINESS SADNESS... hollow

Listened Before: Y Wow, Pantera! These dudes were so unique back in the day! Too heavy for me in high school, but a lot of my friends listened to them so I'm very familiar. This is one of their best albums with their sound being polished but the production not quite as overpolished as their later stuff. Dimebag was an amazing guitar player, and Phil still sounds great to this day. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Walk

Vulgar Display of Power is the sixth album by American heavy metal band Pantera. Being their first album after their breakthrough album (Cowboys from Hell - previous album), Vulgar Display of Power was a massive success. It's the band's highest selling album, is certified double platinum in the US, and is considered one of the most influential heavy metal albums. Critics and fans loved the hard, aggressive riffs and lyrics on this album, making this a staple of the heavy metal genre - especially for the 90's. If head-banging, mosh-pitting, or fast-paced, angry guitar playing is your thing, then you will enjoy this album. The title suits it perfectly; Pantera can make some damn good metal music!

Like a triple dose of Red Bull delivered intravenously

Some good songs and man is it intense

Glorious metal. Great example of the genre. I don't care for the scream vocals but I still enjoyed the album.

Nice stuff especially walk, some tracks are a bit filler but not much so 4/5

Groovy

4/5. A truly vulgar display of power. Honestly if this album was tighter and didn’t have a few songs for filler, it might be a perfect album. The aggression drives it so much I want scream with them. Best song: Walk, This Love

Man, this one brings back memories. That crunchy guitar. Some of those tracks will be in my brain forever. Classic debut. Still sad we lost Dimebag and Vinnie Paul.

Pantera reminds me of that uncle who regularly visits the gym, shares cringy Facebook quotes about being "a street smart tough guy" or "an entrepreneur", and owns a huge-ass SUV with political stickers all over it. He is probably a bit racist/sexist and secretly calls himself "alpha male". But despite this, I think that uncle is a pretty cool metalhead chad that I would definitely smoke with (as long as we don't talk about politics of course). So yeah, this album is filled with so much groove and testosterone. Rarely can an album make me bang my head this much.

Man this shit rocks lol

Sucks... några bra grooves men de e så lame... känns som posturing

A solid heavy metal album that was great to listen to and really just get some head-banging in, to really feel the drums and guitars and just jump around (or as much as I wanted to whilst at work). Another classic metal band that still stands the test of time. Best: Walk Worst: This Love

Hard as shit

Made me want to crush some monsters and punch holes in my doublewide. Awesome trailer park metal.

A great great genre album. And what in the past i dismissed as bad production - is actually genius sound engineering - bass on the guitar - and keep the kick drums on treble - and still a powerful metal album?? Phwooar. To me this is a quality metal album end to end.

Connais peu ce style mais album varié et defouloir 😊

Very powerful, more so than it is vulgar! The foundation of much metal since; a clear influence on slipknot and a7x, and many other heavy & musically gifted bands.

Awesome. Kick in the balls, throw you to the floor and beat you in a mosh pit. No punches pulled. A no frills metal album. Really enjoyed it.

Groove metal. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Not really my stuff, but it served a very specific purpose. I mean, this is not interesting enough to be something that I listen to while focused only on the music. It is not pleasant and discreet enough to be listened to while I do some other mental work. But, oh boy, if I'm late and I have to bike, that's the solution. This morning I was really late for my first lesson, but I managed to get there on time and that's just because when I felt like I needed to slow down a bit, there was someone screaming "FUKKIN' HOSTILEEEEE" in my ears. Never been so fast in my life. Zoom zoom

"Roses are red," I wrote in my journal, "Pantera is loud but Doom is eternal" 4/5

It’s pretty good but it can get tedious. It’s weird that they’re racist when thy have this whole song about not being racist.I think?! The lyrics are confusing. The lyrics are kinda bad for most of this album actually.

Walk is a good song. Rise got me going this morning. As heavy an album as any on the list, this is a foundation of modern metal. As only a passing metalhead, I can't say I felt it move me to a 5 star but I found it enjoyable enough for a 4.

Goes hard and doesnt let up

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Walk (3) 2 - Fucking Hostile (4) 3 - Mouth for War (1)

Not my cuppa tea anymore but this is pretty damn good. Brought back lots of nostalgic memories too (mainly listening to this on my Creative Zen mp3 player on the way to college). Nowhere near as cliche as other metal albums that have made this list, and the riffs are something else. Rifftastic, if you will. I just wish 99% of Sunderland metal bands circa 2006 weren’t pale imitations of Pantera. Kinda cheapens it for me through no fault of the Pantera chaps.

Very fun, some rock club staples on here, walk in particular is a classic. Prefer Pantera to similar bands and would definitely listen to again in the right mood.

Really pleasantly surprised. I thought this would be lame, but it's very listenable. Great memories of 2006-2008 with Walk being on in most clubs, never knew it was Pantera. If you could distill the smell of a sweaty goth into a record, this is it. My olfactory bulb is tingling.

Finally some heavy metal! Pantera kind of passed me by in the 90s while I was in my Punk phase but I really enjoyed this. Some great riffs and a high level of anger/shouting throughout (what more could you need). The first 4 tracks are my highlights.

I know Pantera but never listened to an album before. Enjoyed it, good change of pace from a lot of albums we've had recently. Think "walk" and "fucking hostile" were the only songs I knew and are the best tracks imo. Tbf the whole first half of the album is really good. I remember quite vividly when Dimebag got shot, which is a bit strange given I wasn't a fan particularly.

Discazo cañero de thrash por los 4 costados, con una voz brutal y unos sonidos de bajos predominantes. Muy bestia y con algunas canciones muy buenas

Explosive awesomeness. Didn't expect to like this as much as I did. 4 stars.

I don't think anyone can deny Dimebag Darrell's chops. I kept going back and forth between a three and a four on this album. I don't like the production (so high, so much gain), and the lead singer is a notorious shithead, but it is a fantastic metal record. Favorite tracks: "Fucking Hostile", "Mouth For War", "By Demons Be Driven"

Killer riffs, tight grooves, just incredibly brutal sounding. Dimebag was a fucking wicked guitarist. Always liked how these guys had both groove and technical skill. Usually this style of vocal is tough for me to listen to for close to an hour, but the musicality keeps it interesting.

I like loud, I liked this. Dimebag’s work on the guitar is fucking great, the drums are so tight. I appreciate what they’ve done here, aside from the ballad, I doubt I’ll return to it but the music deserves 4 stars

What a classic. First listen to this since high school. A lot of the tracks hold up but it also has its share of filler tracks that blend together. Still, this is teen rage in an album and definitely a must listen.

Very cool

What a banger. I really enjoyed this and am having trouble picking a favourite track. Walk is most familiar but so many other tracks are just great.

I liked this album. I had to start it a few times until I was really in a metal mood, and it took a few songs in for it to grow on me. Not my favorite metal songs, but still got me head-banging a bit. I still prefer metal without screaming vocals, but I think this album helped me appreciate those vocals more than before. Favorite song: Live in a Hole Worst song: Walk

Groove metal. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

I don’t listen to a lot of metal but this was good. Album Cover: Very metal album cover 3/5

3.5, Id rather listen to Black Sabbath / Metallica / Iron Maiden.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Fucking hostile, This love

Puck off! Best track: Walk

Nice strong metal album. But nothing standing out more than others really, a lot of the songs are similar I feel. Fav tracks: Walk, This Love, Hollow

Ég fíla þessa plötu vel. Mjög hæfilegir skammtar af hávaða með miklu peppi.

Pretty great power rock vibes, highlighted by Walk of course. 4.5

4.5 RIP DIMEBAG DARRELL AND VINNIE PAUL Okay with that out of the way I liked this one. I was wondering if we were ever going to see a metal album on this list and this is a solid starter. I’ve always viewed Pantera as the logical evolution of 1980s Metallica with a very similar but more varied type of thrash. Dimebag’s signature chugging is here in full force along with some gnarly breakdowns and gnasty bass. Face melting solos and some smash starts that’ll give even the most seasoned horror fan a real jump. And of course I have to mention Avenged Sevenfold’s cover of Walk which was actually my introduction to Pantera. An absolute blast front to back. There’s so much to keep me coming back again and again. Favorites: Mouth for War, Walk, Fucking Hostile, This Love, Rise, By Demons Be Driven (those harmonics 👌🏻), Hollow

It's a compelling album, without any doubt. It's not perfect, though. I must rate it four stars at least.

Fuckin dope 4

uh, hyvät yläastenostalgiat. oon aina ollu vähän kahen vaiheilla että tykkäänkö tän levyn tärkeimmästä jutusta eli kitarasaundista, mutta kyllä tässä on melkeen pelkästään bängereitä.

I listened to this right after a Sigur Rós album so it was pretty hard to adjust. The drums and guitar here are 5 stars, but I have a hard time with the voice. I can't imagine there's a better example of this kind of music, but it's just not for me.

More like 3 and a half, liked a lot more when i was younger but its definitely a solid metal album, total classic

Conocía ya al grupo y aunque no escuché el disco completo es mítico, con el tema walk, un himno en el rock/metal.

It doesn't quite have the songcraft of it's 80s counterparts but it's pretty good nonetheless.

Def some sus lyrics here, aged a little ugly. BUT, full of banger tracks, amazing solos, killer riffs, and fire vocals

Mad decent

This is an unapologetically straightforward album with a name that lays plain, what you're getting into. I remember hearing this album for the first time. It compelled me! I couldn't resist the urge to bang my head, clench my fists, furrow my brow, twist my face and gnash my teeth as each track pounded and growled along. I wasn't generally a rage filled person, but the visceral force of this album was infectious. It gave me a means for realizing emotions I had packed away and provided me with some harmless catharsis. This album isn't really in my rotation list anymore, but it was great to hear it again. I can only point to a few albums that have taken me out of the blue like that, and I appreciate them each for what they helped me to learn about myself. As far as the music itself goes, its quintessential hardcore metal. There is no glam. The big hair is traded for shaved heads and sweaty mops. The skin tight pants are traded for ripped denim. These bands look more like the roadies, than the main attraction. That plainspoken affect of the artists carries through to the sound. The guitars grunts, growl, screech and wail, trading blues rock riffs for prog-esque atypical time signatures. The drums, instead of rolling along in the background with the occasional flourish or solo, are right at the forefront, pounding out the path and playing equal parts with all other instruments. The vocals are a gravel throated fist to the face, evoking all of the emotions folded up into each track. All of this is prepared with a simple production quality, much like how the perfect Texas Brisket only needs salt, pepper, and time (prove me wrong).

Yeah, this is timeless and very good.

i am thrash metal's newest fan, apparently? pantera absolutely went for it in this album, they held nothing back, they went so metal. i didn't fully realize how into metal i could get, or maybe it was the loud music while working, or those great guitars and drums! whatever it was, it really worked with pantera and this album. i think i'll be adding some of these to a workout playlist. mad respect for a great album cover. and to every song from the album being explicit on spotify.

I'm not very knowledgable on the genre of "thrash metal" and many of the adjacent genres and bands, so I don't have much of a basis for comparison. That said, this album's sound is what I correlated with Pantera. It turns out, this album was more or less their first full venture into metal that was AS heavy as what is on display on this album. In the beginning of my listening experience, I felt that the vocals had more screaming than I tend to like, but then some damn amazing metal rhythms and riffs would come along to smack me with a vulgar display of power (see what I did there?). This pattern continued on many, if not most, of the tracks, progressively acclimating me. By the end of the album, I was really kind of digging the off-tempo screaming and ridiculously good metal rhythm duality. This was a fun listen, and I'm definitely interested in exploring more of Pantera's discography!

Really like this album. Top of the genre!

Reminded me quite a bit of metallica - honestly wondered if they shared a singer at first lol. Pretty dated, but still fun to listen to. Album seemed to be heavily back-loaded.

I know I've listened to this before, but I didn't remember it very well. Listening with fresh 2022 ears, I found a lot to like. The singles still hold up pretty well, although I probably could never hear Walk again and be ok. This Love is still good. I was most surprised by Fucking Hostile and Rise. Those are straight bangers and I enjoyed them a lot. It fell off a bit near the end, but not by a lot. I was still enjoying it. Too bad Anselmo is a shithead. 4/5

Important for heavy music.

Not my music, but really good stuff. Lots of guitar

Heavy but interesting

Really liked this. Thought it would be too hard but it was just the right level!

Rockin stuff. The title describes the album perfectly.

A little more 'classic' metal style than I usually listen to, but I liked it!

The mighty Pantera! Though I’ll still rock them for workouts they aren’t on my radar like they were in high school and my early-mid 20’s Fave Tracks : “Fucking Hostile” “Walk” “This Love”

Sounding like an even heavier thrashier Metallica

The first half of this album is MASSIVE. Riffs so chunky you can beat people over the head with them. A slight tailoring off in the second half can't change the fact that this is one absolute beast of an album

Strong 4 stars. As Martin Popoff has said, “give me the money riff”. This album is filled with the slow grove metal money riffs that Pantera is famous for. Production does sound muffled though. And as a guitarist I do not care for dimebag-style shredding. It always sounds convoluted and out of place. Ballads also hold this album back (but shredding fits in much better there)

The first half of this album is unbelievable and relentless. Brutal, powerful, the riffs and guitar are just unreal and Anselmos vocals work perfectly. I always found myself spending less time with the music in the second half although that’s not to say it isn’t good - as close to a five as I can get but just misses out. Their finest moment

A very accessible and influential album in the realm of thrash metal. Created the genre groove metal and would inspire later 90s albums like nu metal (e.g. "No Good"). Incredibly coherent and easy flowing album with diversity here and there. You got catchy songs and loud mayhem songs. You got slow ballads and rapid playing. Some really amazing solos. All the tracks are good, but I felt the second half was somewhat lacking (except "Hollow"), although they had their great solos and gimmicks, like the sudden stops in "By Demons Be Driven." Catchiest song: Walk Best soft song: Hollow Best hard song: Mouth for War

My earbuds were completely offended and I couldn't turn it up loud enough. 8/10.

I was dreading reviewing this album, but I'm pleasantly surprised. The thing that I was dreading the most was the dreadful barking and screaming that has come to characterize screamo, and no doubt, I'm sure that Pantera was deeply influential on extreme offshoots of heavy metal like Black Metal and Death Metal, but vocalist Phil Anselmo is actually singing rather than simply shrieking or grunting--there is a difference. I'm also pleasantly surprised by the competence of the musicians. The rhythm section is powerful, tight and can turn on a dime. And I really like how cleanly this has been recorded. Lead guitarist Dimebag is a superior technician, even if he doesn't have a whole lot new to say in terms of melodic lines. The riffage is equally influenced by Black Sabbath and 80s speed metal, but more complex than either. Basically, Pantera doesn't suck. If I appreciate this more than I like it, it's because my taste in 90s bands influenced by Black Sabbath runs more to Alice In Chains and Soundgarden. Not that those are technically better bands than Pantera. On the contrary. It's just that the point of Pantera seems to be to pummel the listener or perhaps to accompany literal head banging against a wall. Basically, Pantera Vulgar Display of Power registers as a wall of undifferentiated rage, whereas the albums of Alice In Chains and Soundgarden feature distinctive songs that make you feel different things while not neglecting riffage or powerful emotions. Those bands are more nuanced. That said, considering what Pantera is going for, it's hard to imagine how you would improve on Vulgar Display of Power.

Solid album!! I loved the drumming but found the vocals a little obnoxious 7/10

Pretty good. Got a bit long but enjoyable as far as metal goes. 7

Decent metal, slightly too long for what it is. 7

I never really got into Pantera when I was younger, or most metal for that matter. However, there is just something about this album that I think I would have really liked if I had given it more of a chance when I was younger. Just the tone on the guitar is great; it resonates somewhere deep inside your skull. I'm not in love with the lyrical portion of it, but that's generally true of this type of metal for me. 4/5, but I might be talked into 5/5 on repeated listenings

Seminal thrash metal album from the 90s. Very rarely does a band's non-musical story surpass the musical one, but man-o-man does Pantera have a hell of a story as a band. Their contribution to metal can be told through this album.

Not my favourite by Pantera, but obviously still a Classic.

Quintessential metal, really enjoyed, right legnth, hits hard

Not typically my cup of tea but I am definitely keeping it in mind for a challenging workout day next time around.

Classic metal record that you can't go wrong with.

Great metal! Had only listened to “Walk” by them before this and I loved this album!

Chunky groovy goodness, all great songs, but can get a little much to listen to near the end as a cohesive album

not my kind of music

So fun to hear this again! Definitely requires a certain mood, but the band is so tight and the songs are high-quality compared to the scream metal they inspired later.

Pusht anders beim pumpen. Richtig nice ist das besonders guter Metall? oder gibt's noch mehr davon?

Love the heavy riffs, and grungy vocals. This music digs through your outer layer and vibrates the marrow. Either exhilarating or horrific - I love it. Some great songs - especially “Mouth for War” and “Walk”. Also props for the quintessential Metal song title “Fucking Hostile”. Solid 4

Fast and loud, I like this!
