Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Absolutely generic. No words to describe it.

In a nutshell: easy listening Americana. Bonnie Raitt reminds me so much of Shania Twain. As to if it's a bad thing, who knows? Didn't enjoy this album, but I didn't hate it. Overall: 4/10

2.5 really. Sounded a bit dated for me

This is just not my kind of music.

Not terrible, but found it pretty bland. Standout song: Nobodys Girl

First song is nice. Pretty tame after that.

Had some moments but mostly Zzzzzz…

Sounds like every other female singer

love the electric piano but the hokier songs brought it down

Incredibly lame and overproduced. I’m sorry Bonnie.

That was pleasant. I like the one that sounds like a cross between reggae and Bayou jazz

Bonnie Raitt is a wonderful musician, I adore her follow up to this album, Luck Of The Draw, which is a 4.5 to 5 star album on any given day, but this... I *know* it won the Grammy for Album of the Year, I *know* its preserved in the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" but... I just don't hear it.... Its fairly bland, nothing stood out, it was a passable time and I was never compelled to hit skip or stop, but I just don't hear what's so good about this.

++: Love Letter, Real Man, I Will Not Be Denied, The Road's My Middle Name +: Nick of Time, Too Soon to Tell +-: Thing Called Love, Have a Heart, I Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again -: Cry on My Shoulder, Nobody's Girl 5,5/10

Fairly decent album…1 time through is probably enough. More than likely the only time I’ll ever listen to it.

This just wasn't for me

The first 2 songs are pretty good, but unfortunately I wasn't hooked by any of the other songs. I understand why some would like this but it's not for me. 2 Stars.

Not my VIBE!

Nice voice, a few nice blues songs, but nothing that much outstanding. Did I miss something? (apart from the stylish cover?) grin.

?! this was a triumphant return to form? no, this was jc penny dressing room music.

easy-listening country-lite adult contemporary synth-driven elevator music ballads??? in MY 1001 albums????? it's the same synth sound used in video game water levels so i'm instinctively wary. this was heralded as a "return to form" for bonnie, and i can only assume the "form" in question must be the 12-bar blues. this was bland and uninspiring to me, but maybe you had to be there. favorites: thing called love, have a heart, the road's my middle name

Dont ask me my favorite song from this because I feel about all of them the exact same way BORRRING

i feel like i'm in a JCPenny

This kind of country pop doesn’t do much for me but I suppose it’s well executed.

Way too late 80s adult contemporary for me, although you can see what she's capable of underneath it all.

Here’s a glimpse into my mind: I first read Bonnie Raitt as Bonnie Ratt, then spent the entirety of this lackluster listening experience thinking about how a late-80s country cover of “Round and Round” would sound.

Did not know miss xcx sampled the opening track for this... feeling #silly. Other than that fun bit, I don't know if this was something I neeeeeeded to hear before I die. But you know, to each their own.

So smooth…late 80s anti-nostalgia kicking in, since this seemed to be playing everywhere…great album overall, but really my favorite genre/style

I feel like Bonnie is a talented musician and, from what I can tell, a good person, so I really wanted to like this. Unfortunately, it is dull at its best, and at its worst it’s like a distillation of all the worst 70s soft rock garbage.

Feels like I’m listening to the radio played over the intercom at a supermarket which is sometimes decent but is mostly just wallpaper

Eh, if you like American oldies sound of music, you'll probably like this. The southern twang never appeals to me, but I don't think the substance is necessarily bad

Fair enough, bluesy country, nothing special.

Bonnie Raitt, the artist who most sounds like a drunk Glaswegian saying "Its good, isn't it?" Meh, very typical late eighties country-pop pap, very much not my thing but not so offensive as to get a one.

Super 80s! Um…this wasn’t terrible? But also just not amazing either. There were some songs that I sort of liked okay? But I will very most likely never listen to this album again.

Real man Alabama.... Albummet gør intet for at ramme mig. Ikke engang had...

Puha det var svært at komme igennem. Pop-rock når det er værst

had me interested in the beginning but kinda dropped off later

Oh no.

I'm not mad about it.

I’m not sure why she is fingering a Fleshlight on the cover, but it’s the most interesting thing about the album.

A nothingburger of music. I can't give it one star because it didn't even generate any sort of negative emotions. Just emptiness

I hoped to like this at least a little, but this really did nothing for me. Super bland country-pop.

The first song on this album, Nick of Time, makes me feel That Feeling! That feeling of being on the plane home from Paris and seeing the sunset behind the suspension bridge out the plane window. That feeling of being on a motorbike on an island in Vietnam with my favourite people, wearing shorts and a tan, wind in my hair and this song playing. That feeling of being a bottle of wine deep into the evening, live swing band playing, people watching us dance from their seats. That feeling of drinking unlimited prosecco on a river cruise in Budapest, dancing with old couples and two Kiwi's i'd met the day before, getting sunburnt and getting drunk and getting kissed. That Feeling

I raitt this 2/5

Easy listening, adult contemporary, soft-rock. Call it what you want, but mostly it just reads as not for me. This is grocery store music: unassuming and inoffensive. It's got that generic 80's sound to it. It's the music that would play in a bog-standard fish out of water comedy from that time. You've got a man from Siberia visiting America for the first time ever? Teach him how to line dance in a country/western bar with a few of these songs. Hilarity will ensue. Not for me, but hey, that hair is hue and I love the Rogue-esque stripe of white in the red

This just sounds very generic to me. 80s pop and Americana collide, and somehow the result is blander than both of those genres. I think the fact it's mostly covers adds to the whiff of cabaret/bar-band I'm picking up.

Kind of slow, but some of the songs were decent.

Fairly enjoyable but not very substantial

Boring. Why is this on there

Was never going to work for me Will I listen to again: 0%

Great voice but way too eighties and not in a good way....

So 80s. I'm not in the mood tonight.

The lyrics were sometimes hackneyed. The synths were an little embarrassing. The tracks seemed to veer wildly between a sincere expression of nuanced human emotion and cliché meaningless bullshit. Raitt’s voice is consistently incredible but it’s not quite enough to win me over.

Not too bad, quite nice.

I thought this would grab my attention in some way but it was pretty bland. I didn't give it a huge amount of focus but for what I did, I didn't get much out.

I like her voice. I don't like how 1980s department store synthesizer the music sounds. Oh, I Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again is a bit better, tho bland. Overall pretty bland.

Songs 4 80s housewives... Doesn't do much for a 28 year old male metalhead in 2024 NGL.

Hmm, totally average bluesy air. Don't understand why it's on the list.

While Bonnie's vocals are undeniably fun to listen to, you start to get tired real quick of all the love songs she's belting out. I tried to give it a fair shake, but it's just not for me. Best songs: Thing Called Love, Soon To Tell Worst Songs: Nobody's Girl, The Road's My Middle Name

i could have given this a higher score but i had a bad day

ehhhhhh this is not really my cup of tea. its that country cheese pop blend that I don't really like.

I can't believe I've never heard this album. Really odd mix of 80s synths and blues rock but with ballad lyrics. Can't say it was my favorite.

I really don’t know what to think of this. At first I thought „oh, some cool 80s pop music“ but then it started to become a bit boring in the middle just to get better again in the end. Really hard to judge.

Já, síðníundatugar köntrí. Þetta fer hvorki í taugarnar á mér né gerir neitt fyrir mig. Slick og lítið eftirminnilegt. Ain't gonna let you break my heart er samt smá næs, minnir á Stevie.

Overall this album is ok. Bad ok, but ok. It's got some good songs at the start of it! But even they are generally forgettable, and when compared with rock/pop bands from a similar era e.g. Bonnie Tyler or Huey Lewis and the News I think this really falls short. Her voice is good; it's the songwriting and production which is just a bit lacklustre. After the first 3 songs the quality really went downhill. Cry on my shoulder I really suffered through. "Thing called love" is a good song. Not great but good. Overall this is a classic 2 star album. Fine, but forgettable.

This wasn’t a bad listen by any means. I liked Bonnie’s voice and a lot of the tracks had a good sound, but I felt it trailed off a bit towards the end as many albums do. Still listenable but I was bored for the second half

Yeah, 80s coumtry inspired pop. Cant make me happy with that.

At first I was kind of interested in listening to something that was completely new to me, but this pop album full of love ballads really isn't my thing. I kind of like the late 80s synths throughout the album, but they are honestly implemented in some of the most basic and safe ways possible. Every song being essentially the same doesn't help the score here either. Have a Heart is ok, so is Nick of Time.

mi sta a calà il sonno...

This album has a country base with jazzy elements. It’s smooth but sappy. I definitely hear it as a precursor to Norah Jones.

Not really my type.

Not really my cup of tea. Some nice moments but not enough. Hard to give it a good Raitting

Enjoyable country singing

Nick of Time? More like waste of time, amirite? Not for me

It's really an incredibly underwhelming album. And I'm not even against the country pop, Nashville type of sound (except the garbage of today). But this wasn't innovative while also not being all that fun. Still, it'd had just a bit of fun to it to not rate a 1.

# 327 : Started off ok but got a little boring towards the end. Nothing special and a whole lot of meh. Who did she pay to get the Grammy? Another album which makes you reconsider whether there are as many as 1,001 albums you MUST listen to before you die. Best song : Nobody's Girl

This is not my cup of tea, but given my expectations for hating this, I'm pleasantly surprised. It's kinda good in the same way that mid-80s George Harrison is good - "Got My Mind Set On You" era George, that is. It's not really what I'd go out of my way to listen to, and if I were to walk into an establishment that was blasting music that sounded like this, I've made a few wrong turns, but yeah, that's a long way of saying "this ain't that bad, I guess". Still just a 2 from me, but saying I like it will win me brownie points with my partner's mom, so I'm willing to listen to the whole album.

This album tries to do too much while simultaneously being cookie-cutter. Like, there's country and blues rock, but also some of what sounds like R&B (almost Sade-like). Nothing seemed super special about the lyrical content, some of it falling under standard country fare to my ears. Now I have nothing against Raitt, her next album has some good stuff, but I was honestly surprised to see that this album won a Grammy in 1990.

It isn't good, it isn't bad. What it is is mediocre. Why is it on this list? There is nothing remarkable about this in any way

I get that she's a great, but, this didn't really grab me.

You go, girl.

Just sounds like a very generic 80s pop album? It changes a bit the genre throughout the album, but still nothing special.

There's some good licks here but not enough is making me sit up and pay attention. Real Man has a bit of actual drive at least. Too many slower tracks that meander around and don't get anywhere. Middle school slow dance isn't an aesthetic I need to revisit. The rest isn't good enough either. Too country, or too bland, I don't know.

Well I got thru it, I really did expect at least something here to grab me considering the love and adoration Bonnie seems to have… This is such generic, commercial trash. If she had something special to overcome the stale lyrics, that’d be something but no there’s really nothing exciting or fresh at all here. I get it, you’re independent and people get old, whatever Bonnie. Also, what the fuck is that weird ass belt you’re fingering on the cover? This sucks 2 stars

Incorporating rock music only works if it wasn't treated like a wounded pigeon. One should smash her head in it. Sell her soul for it. Channel her deepest inner turmoil in it. Rock works if one is sincere and daring.

- 2 because it's Bonnie Raitt .... -

This is a clear progenitor to 90s pop country. I like 90s pop country to a point. You can make a pretty fire playlist out of it for sitting around a campfire. But it also has a very narrow lane for being good and it's easy for it to fall to pretty awful. This album didn't really hit the mark. It is just kind of nothing. Too bland for anything over a 2. Not so bad that it gets a 1.

Boring, repetitive and horribly produced.

So ‘preferred’ is a very strong term here, but the more upbeat slide guitar/generic 80s rock/pop ones were better. Overall, not unpleasant as such, but an uninspiring jaunt through a few country/ballad/AOR styles, with a grating 80s twist. Obvs will never listen again. Gets a solid 2 when taking into account the epic lady-mullet on the album cover.

Bluesy, quite like it. Think my clapping dance moves would fit in at her concert.

Fav: Love Letter Least Fav: Have A Heart

Almost painfully generic and absolutely forgettable. Listening to this album feels like having to drink a bottle of water when you're not thirsty.

Just boring

I'm sure this is good ... if you like the cheesiest music in the history of the world. I am put in mind of plastic tablecloths in a tatty American diner. She can sing, and play the guitar - so an extra star for that. "You think I'm blind, but I've got eyes to see." And I have ears to listen - this is bad.

Not especially exciting, sadly. It felt quite generic, didn't really have any song that stood out. Bonnie has quite good voice though, gotta give her that.

She has a really cool voice, sounds a bit like Bonnie Tyler or Stevie Nicks. It was just a mostly bland country. The song that stood out the most for me was "Nick of Time" and that was mainly due to the Bon Iver cover of that song and her only other song I know "I can't make you love me" (which is really beautiful song but not on this album).

Liked some songs. Really influential on 90s pop country, which is a soft spot for me, since that’s what I listened to while growing up.

Sounds like an album of early 90's sitcom themes. See "Real Man". Not worth a second listen.

I won’t give it one-star only because those one-stars need to stay special. This isn’t one star.

wouldn’t listen again but was nice. nobody’s girl and have a heart were the best

No thanks

Love Bonnie Raitt. Hate 80s blues

The first song was really pretty good but then everything after that was a bit boring and one dimensional. She has a good voice and lyrically it’s fine for some older country. Overall though this album just isn’t something worth talking about. 5.5/10

Not my thing, sorry Bonnie

This is pretty middle of the road, safe, boomer centric boring music. Nothing here for me at all.

kantri rokki power balladi fuusio.. kuin helvetistä perkele tuonut maailmalle lahjaksi päähänpistoksen.. tässä nähdään mtä alkoi tapahua massatuotetulle amerikkalaiselle folkkimysalle, ja lopputulos ei mikään kaunis näky ole. really a brilliant lyricist, monta asiaa voisin rouvasta sanoa, tuo ei ehkä olisi yksi niistä jota tulisi mainittua ehkä jopa kertaakaan kyseisistä asioista... hohhhoiaiiijjjakkkkahaaa... baarimusiikkia, jos baarissa unfarthomably bad vibe, awkward atmosphere. työn jälkeen yksi tuoppi, nohjaa, vois tästä hiljalleen alkaa käppäilemmään, tuonne kodin suuntaan heh, kuitenkin lämmin ateria odottamassa, tarvitse täällä sen kummasemmin aikaa vietttämään, oikeastaan olleenkaan, tyytyväinen tähän elämään tällä hetkellä, noh, huomiseen patte, nähdään huomenna... thing called love

There is just something about late 80s production qualities on blues and country that I really feel ages them. This is entirely too slick and the reggae influenced song seems laughable to me now.

You can trace the roots here, as if it were music for Taylor Swift’s grandma. Pleasant enough, but snooze who isn’t asking for a little more something from their music than that? Retaining the form of the blues, but with none of its bite, it all begins to sound a bit dreary, so much so that it’ll never get a second listen from me.

Mikä hengen köyhyys saa ihmisen kuuntelemaan tällaista 2/5

eäh aika geneerinen kasarinaispop-levy. jää bonnie tylerista selvästi. 2/5

One of the best country albums I've ever heard! 2 Stars

😴🤢😴😴

Pretty interesting musically. Some blues and maybe even funk elements. Still kind of too "smooth rock" for me, almost too understated considering the power of her voice. So not my fave.

Always like her voice, though not the music. Country music has yet to resonate with me.

I remember this album from the late 80’s mostly because my mother bought it. It’s not bad, but for me it’ll always feel and sound like mom music.

Sounds the kind of thing they’d have playing in the background of a Hollywood movie as the main character enters a truck stop or something.

Was alright but not my kind of music.

Nothing special on here

It was fine, didn’t offer anything amazing for me. Won’t listen again but if it was playing I wouldn’t turn it off

Plain, slightly old, tap water Nnn

not my style but obviously very talented at what she does.

Is halt so Country Pop-Kram, wat willste machen? 2-3

Middle of the road, unadventurous music. Not terrible.

The '80s production undermines this album a lot. There are good songs here, but the thick layer of synthetic makeup that's slathered over it hasn't stood up too well to the test of time.

I understand the cultural significance of this album but it did not age well.

This sounds like something my dad would listen to. But not in a good way?

Started off okay but quickly went down hill. Not a long album but still a bit of a chore

Seicht

It played

Nick Of Time is bland, bland soft rock/easy listening radio fayre; somehow Thing Called Love ends up on Planet Rock sometimes :D I knew that song very well but none of the others and I don't feel like my life has been improved by having this bestowed on me today. It is inoffensively, 2/5 bland.

This is really, really, not good. It's saved a 1 because I'm reserving that for stuff that is actively unpleasant to listen to, but this has nothing to recommend it. It's just dull, the lyrics are cliched, the music doesn't do much, and her voice is perfectly good but not special enough to carry an album that's so vocally driven. And all the tracks go on too long, many of them ending via fadeout which makes them feel even longer. 2/5. Just.

bland as hell

Not that this is a bad record or artist, but this feels really generic. Bonnie Raitt combines a lot of different styles of roots music (blues, folks, country, etc.) that comes out super bland to me. She's an awesome guitarist though.

Dull nothingness

I put this off because I thought there was no way I was going to truly enjoy a Bonnie Raitt album. I was slightly shocked. This is apparently still full heel turn by country. This is way less pop and more honky tonk blues. Half the tracks fill that honky tonk vibe, the other are over produced tear in my beer love songs. I don't mind the latter but I don't think Hank did it this way.

Started off nice with a couple of catchy foot tapping tunes, but then was followed by a few ballads which I was not a fan of. Never really got back into a groove for me and was just kind of typical country which didn't do much for me

Neither the time, nor the place.

No, 80s country pop is definitely not my bop. I was kind of hoping to hate this enough to give it a 1, but it’s fine. Inoffensive enough to cruise in for a sickly 2.

Too much like a session band on autopilot. The musical competence oozes out the speakers.

country / folk / blues très monotone. 4.5/10

boohoo

Favs: Have a Heart

Genre: country Instruments: 2/5 Modern Translation: 2/5 Dance Potential: 1/5 Listening Location: walking in Sydney Heard it before: Yes Favourite Song: Thing Called Love Made me feel: liked the upbeat feel of this album, but most of the songs sounded the same after the first two. Still like Bonnie but not sure if this qualified for the list of albums.

Not bad.

Just not in my wheelhouse. Musically its fine, but it doesn't strike any sort of cord with me personally. 2.5/5

Sassy. I think for personal reasons I prefer Carole King, but this is a 2 or a 3 for me.

First song and it's already better than Bob Dylan. It has a good vibe, but nothing special that would make me listen to this again. It was too monotonous, though I like her voice. Second one is a little upbeat, plus county vibes. I love this for now. It has the best karaoke vibe, guitar getting louder is fun. It has Elton John vibe, and I love it. It is still monotonous, but in a good way. Very simple lyrics also, dunno why this album is here. Third song has Donna Summer vibe definitely. I wish it was progressive or at least had a proper chorus, otherwise it's great, but I'll get bored of it soon maybe. 4th song is a slow one, so less vibes, and more boring. I liked this the least for now. It's just not it. Now 5th song is smth I wanted. Piano and guitar, plus upbeat. Weird instrument came in the instrumental break, loved it. 6th song is uninteresting, tooo country for me. Nothing happened really to say, wouldn't listen to that one. Same thing about 7th song, not unique, no beat, kind of annoyingly slow. Instrumental break has a soft beat, which I surprisingly like. Hate hate the 8th song, backgrounding it, unless I skip it. Woow again a bad song, 9th one, literally nothing happens. Why can't artists keep up the goodness. I do like when she says "deadly". Can't wait to finish this totally boring album. She doesn't even have vocals to make it better. 10th song and literally I'm in pain. I just skipped ahead some parts, and didn't regret at all. Finallyyy 11th song has a decent beat. I like this kind of songs, more than those slow torture ones. At least she ended the album fine. Sooo I was gonna rate this 3, but I feel like there's too many flops, so 2 seems like the right choice, even temptations was more funn to listen to, but definitely not better than Floyd.

Va kje nåke for denna karen her

Ugh. This is the 80's going ALL-IN on itself just before the clock struck midnight.

Soft rock, singer/songwriter, lidt country, set par okay, men lidt for generisk

Mukavaa musiikkia albumi loskahtelee kuin flacksjön aallot amuyöstä...

Well that was ridiculous. But in a fun way.

Apparently one of Raitt's biggest supporters was Prince? That's unexpected. Slightly intereting background story. The music is fine but it's not my style.

Despite a bunch of things I usually dislike (the very 80s sound of the first track) or boring (blues rock), this was ok. but I'm giving a max of 2 for any album with zero songs I'll listen to again on purpose, so 2 it is

Just can’t do it with the rock drums and the shiny finish. Sorry Bonnie.

Nick Of Time Have A Heart

This album was pretty meh. I like country music but this didn't do much for me.

Hmm opzich wel leuk om naar te luisteren maar heeft niet echt iets speciaals, beetje saai imo Would not buy

Wasn’t feeling this one at all.

Incredibly dated and uninteresting.

I have fond memories of my mom loudly playing Luck of the Draw on road trips, but we never really listened to this one. Honestly, this has a lot of those bad 80s sounds that don't hold up well over time. Not my cup of tea.

1980-luvun naispoppari, muttei kuitenkaan Madonnaan verrattava. Tylsä, mutta hyvin ”aikansa tuotos”

And who doesnt need a bit of Bonnie Rait from time to time to bring them down to earth, and experience the misery of the broken American dream and all the wasted potential funneled into consumerism, jingles and political theatre? This dont expert well, Jeb. There is as much depth dynamism in this as the "breeze wave" soundtrack on the video game "OUTRUN". (on a good day) It is suitable for drunk dancing in an elevator. Or a soundtrack to a Gwennyth Paltrow film. She *really* sounds a lot like Gwyneth. Squelch. hhhahaa. :-)

This is too smooth and polished for my taste. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic wrote: "[Raitt] never rocks too hard, but there is grit to her singing and playing, even when the surfaces are clean and inviting." That's just damning with faint praise. I need it to rock harder, I need more grit, and I need the surfaces a lot more grimy. I like her voice (especially when in torch mode, such as "Too Soon To Tell"), but the little bit of huskiness she occasionally deploys (as in "The Road's My Middle Name") seems like a box ticking exercise in generic blues. Her guitar playing is pretty good, especially when she plays slide, but this feels like watered down blues for a mainstream audience (read as: white people). This is music for blues lawyers. I'm sure that Bonnie Raitt is more than capable of tearing it up, but 17 years and ten albums into her career (and with a record company botch job for her previous record), she clearly needed a commercial success. From that point of view, she hit it out of the park. But it's just too slick and safe for much love from me.

Quite empty and over polished, designed for radio, music for people who don’t want to think too much about music.

Liked what I heard but couldn’t really get into it

Not for me.

Pretty standard late 80s pop album, a few highlights, nothing too crazy

Treacly.

I'd raitter no

Hard to believe this album won album of the year. It doesn't suck, but that's about the best I can say about it.

It's a little too nice, a little too soft. Very much like 80s "contemporary" music.

solid album, was fine...overall enjoyed. would probably rate 2.5

Raitt has a great voice. She has just a tiny bit of rasp, I love it. She sings earnestly but the music is just the most blend, boring shit that’s ever been recorded. I have no doubt she is an extremely talented musician and song writer and out there somewhere there are some incredible Bonnie Raitt songs but this album is in a desperate need of a defibrillator. 4.3/10

The literal middle of the road 2/5

Wow I don't think I've listened to an album that matched the cover quite like Nick Of Time by Bonnie Raitt. It was exactly the Americana/Country/Pop from the 80s I expected and whilst this isn't my usual listen, I can appreciate the effort that has gone into it - albeit how iconically late 80s it looks and sounds. Best: Nick Of Time Worst: I Will Not Be Denied

Wanted to like this but just doesnt all hook up for me

2.5/5 just okay didn’t really get to me.

As generic as it gets. Less country and more boring 80s synthy AOR.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: No, not really my thing Favourite song: didn’t have one

Not my kinda of music. Not bad though

-never heard of this woman or this album -GREAT VOICE on this lady tho -thing called love is groovy -its kinda eh to me tho -real mans got some country vibes -is this music good? i guess? its just not my thing -a bit boring and bland for me -but i like her voice! and the lyrics aren’t terrible! -but this is going to be a 2 star album for me

My Mom had a few Bonnie Raitt albums and I remember hearing them when I was younger. I am not my mother, however, and this album was a weird collection of pop-rock country, reggae, and soft rock ballads.

Not my jam

It's a bit boring. It's not you it's me bonnie

I've enjoyed some Bonnie Raitt stuff here and there and think she's a good artist, but the stuff from her commercial peak in the late 80s/early 90s is easily her most offputting. This album just reeks of the lamest sounds of the time period, and the songs aren't all that catchy or memorable. Didn't do much for me.

It was okay, not really my speed

folk/country

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Thing Called Love (2) 2 - Nick of Time (1) 3 - Nobody's Girl (5)

Bit poppy for me

Kinda groovy

What I have learned from this list is that I mostly likely won't like any album that can be labelled as "americana". Of course, "Nick Of Time" is one of them. Boring and uninteresting record, I didn't like any moment of it. That doesn't mean it's terrible, but I definitely couldn't listen to it for longer than 30 minutes.

I fully expected to detest this. Country and 80's combined. But it's so bland to be nothing.

Langweilig

She's at her best when she's doing bluesy stuff, and that rarely happens on this album. A disappointment. Best track: The Road's My Middle Name

It's a vibe. Pop folk singer mixing country and blues. Most of the songs are forgettable, generic, and repetitive, but it's minimalist and nice. And the addition of blues, country, and synths diversifies the sound to make it bearable. Favorites: Nick of Time, Love Letter, Cry on my Shoulder, Too Soon to Tell

I would just never listen to this type of stuff... I give it 2 stars just because it's not as bad as 90s pop

I find this really bland. Its all competent. Just dull.

Yeah, it's okay. Hard for me to dislike her voice, easy for me to dislike the songs. Production is clean and clear. But this adult contemporary business felt old and stodgy in the 80s and 90s, and being a contemporary adult myself now has done nothing to change that perspective. I wonder if I'm older now than Raitt was when she put this out. Lemme check... OH THANK GOD. She was 50 when she put this out. I've got a couple years left before I dedicate my life to this type of music. Whew!

Not a whole lot of interesting music here, just a mediocre blend of blues, country and pop.

13-in-a-dozen, rock by numbers

Love Bonnie Raitt, incredible voice and songwriting. But this ain't it.

Your mom would give this 5 stars.

I guess it's alright, for a slice of late 80's American country, but I'm not sure what it's doing on this list, feels like there's a LOT out there like this, and there are a lot of others out there that it'll be taking the place of. That said, I'm always happy to listen to an artist and set of songs that have millions of listens that I've never heard of. Doesn't do much for me, sadly.

Maybe this one just aged badly, but I don't understand why it's on the list. It doesn't sound bad as such, but it's really boring and I don't know why someone would want to listen to it.

Nope. Sounds like every pop album ever produced.

Nothing about this record impressed me. Not her voice, not the lyrics nor the songs themselves. It just sounds like banal square-dancing pop rock. The sort of thing you would hear playing in a Southern bar before a naked Arnold Schwarzenegger bursts in looking for your motorcycle. Just very sub-par to my ear.

Only one tune listened too

The opening track has all the strong elements of a Fleetwood Mac song. The rest of the album, however, is like Fleetwood Mac ordered from Wish.com I listened to the first song on repeat maybe 30+ times yesterday… which dragged the remaining country-pop fodder up to the heady heights of a 2/5

Just ok. Really bland.

Good lord, it’s all very 80s. I’m not sure Bonnie had many (any?) UK hits but she’s not someone i was hugely familiar with from the time… it’s ok

Sweet, but not my kind of sweetness

Too smooth

Dosadno

A ono, album mi je kao i cover. EH.

Middle of the road dullness.

Oude Country, niet aardig, niks aparts

Underwhelming. Maybe my mother would like it.

Meh, country music

Wow, this album I have never heard of in my life sure does have a lot of accolades, huh? Guess we'll see if it lives up to it all, but I have a sneaking suspicion it won't. It indeed did not, but it wasn't the worst thing in the world. Perhaps on a bad day this would be getting a one star, but I didn’t particularly hate anything, and the rest of the album was so nothing for me that the bluesy sounding song, a genre I generally don't like, was actually pretty alright. No clue why this is deemed so important in the world of music though, and that first song reeks of 80s, but not in the good way like new wave, but in the bad way, like "oh this is why music changed so much in the 90s".

A little too country, not catchy enough.

Lacking in emotion, too smooth by half.

Well, that was boring. 4/10

Nick of Time, more like my time was nicked. Nothing against Bonnie, but who thought this album should be on this list? She has some good songs and it had a nice country flair but this list just has a lot of unnecessary albums.

No my thing at all

Juustoista kantria siirapilla.

Boring, repetitive, and perhaps the progenitor of modern country-pop.

Fine, I suppose. Just not my thing.

I guess this record represents the transition from old to new country music, the point where it became bland soft rock slush. The lyrics are not as cringeworthy as contemporary efforts, but the music is very cheesy and over-produced. The late '80s were a pretty lean period for interesting mainstream music, evidently.

Baby Boomer F(ucking)M(iddle of the road) rock. Best Tracks: Nick of Time; Nobody's Girl; The Road's My Middle Name

Well, decent work, but That’s it

I had to turn this off halfway because this type of music grates on my nerves. Slick, overproduced pop-country. I'll be generous and give this two stars because I like Raitt's voice and she was obviously a big influence on the likes of Shania Twain.

Not my style of music. No drums and no guitar

Not my cup of tea.

Nothing to write home about

Not sure this is going to be my type of music based on the first song, but Bonnie Raitt has a pretty good rep in guitar circles, so hopefully there'll be something for me later. Thing Called Love I think I actually know! It's alright I guess; getting some guitar here, though not sure it's enough to overcome my reservations about genre. Love Letter same as above; this one is a bit more bluesy, and guitary, so it's okay, but fundamentally this is just isn't my type of music. Not sure it's worth going track by track when it's the same thing each time; the bluesier songs are okay but still not quite my deal, and others just aren't my style. Nobody's Girl is alright. The last song also is decent.

Leider echt fad!

bissl fahrstuhlmusik

I like the 80's vibe this has, but overall I don't really like this kind of music. I enjoyed the title track, though. I can see why people would like this, it's just not for me.

21st December 2021 Listened while pottering about guy's flat in LA! Has it's moments, I prefer the bluesier songs.

I was expecting a country album or at least a blues album. What I got was a cheesy soft rock album instead. Whatever the genre, this was a boring, cheesy, greasy, over-produced lump of an album with no consistent through-line and no sense of itself or where it belonged.

Smooth bland MOR.

Top Picks: Have a Heart and I Will Not Be Denied It was alright. I'm not normally too big on 80s ballads and unfortunately this was no exception.

Boring, but not irritating.

I didn't mind this at all. Great voice, Nick of Time and The Road's My Middle Name are both very decent songs.

Almost a 3, but too generic and bland overall. Great guitar work

Bland, generic 80s tosh but inoffensive and avoids one star

I don't remember this album and I listened to it like 10 minutes ago

Not what I feel was advertised by yt music's description or the album cover

Second half was so boring I forgot I was listening to music.

Nice voice, generic 80s blues pop rock.

Wasn't a big fan of this album not much to it. Up until "Nobody's Girl" I was pretty bored. That track was great. The others a bit bland. Might have not been in the mood for it. Final track was solid as well.

Just not my thing.

Well, I love her story of perseverance and overcoming that led to this album. I certainly appreciate her voice and the musicality. I just don't feel that I ever need to listen to this album again. It's not her, it's me.

It's musical, and Bonnie has a great voice, but I found the whole thing pretty uninteresting. Inoffensive background music at best - the kind of thing you might expect to hear being played in the toilets of a chain restaurant.

Very pedestrian pop-blues rock/country. Feels like 80's production. I can see why this was a big hit for her. Some of the songs that veer more towards the blues (Real Man for instance) are ok, but generally this is not very interesting to me. Guitars are too clean and too far back in the mix. Personally I'd rather listen to actual Chicago-style blues like Muddy Waters or something with a bit more bite and hard edge. This is kind of watered down blues-style pop.

chill countryish music 2.5

Songs: Real Man, I Will Not Be Denied

There are a few songs I thought were ok, the more bluesy ones. The album overall has objectively very talented people playing well, it just didn’t really make me feel anything.

80s as fuck. She's got a good voice but not for me.

Oh shit. I'm probably really gonna hate this one. I can already tell that this is gonna be VERY outside of my wheelhouse but you know what, this is exactly why I decided to do this. I'm so addicted to knowledge that just being aware of what this person sounds like as well as this album will be good enough for me even if I hate the music. Ok so the first track, the title track, is pretty damn good and exceeded my expectations. It feels genuinely sincere and tasteful, rather than the really boring, predictable, country rock I was expecting. I can fuck with it. Unfortunately the second track pretty much it on some of the things I was afraid of. I'm really just not into most country, blues, and whatever rock music that blends these together. I will say it's not totally cringe inducing beyond the aesthetic choices that I can't vibe with. Again, it really does feel genuine and authentic without trying to achieve some kind of market based outcome utilizing contrived and cliche'd concepts that are simply popular and arbitrarily novel. You can tell she means everything she plays and sings, and even if I'm not on board with the sound I'm hearing I'm completely on board with Bonnie as an artist. She's a good guitarist too. Ok, it's not completely without some cliche's that border on the uncomfortable (Love Letter's lyrics are noticeably less interesting than the opening track), and I've never really been for a lot of the conventions of rock music, which is just throw some good enough lyrics that fit nicely into the music, shut up, and play the damn guitar. There's a lot to respect in this straightforwardness but again that doesn't totally resonate with me and is rarely ever the kind of music that really hits me in my deepest parts (with the exception of maybe AC/DC or something, I dunno). It just goes to show how rock is basically dead. Bonnie seems like the kind of woman I would really like as a person and I can sense it in the music even if there are jarring cultural differences. But so far this album makes me wanna clean my ears out with a Coil album or something. It's definitely the most palatable "conservative" music I've ever heard, for sure.

Nick Of Time

I’m a little stumped figuring out how to rate this. Did I enjoy it? Yes, most of it. It’s how to do romantic songs, and I’m a true sucker for booming 80s drums. I will explore more of her back catalogue (so to speak!!!). Do I think it’s an album I need to have listened to before I die? Well, probably not, frankly. I can’t see what sets it above other similar mid-tempo soft rock of the 80s. It definitely stood out in contrast to the dreck we’ve been served up for the last four days. But not enough for me.

A comedown from the other Bonnie Raitt albums I've heard, but they're all terrific so a tough standard to meet. What works so well on those is how woven together the vocals and music are--giving the impression of songs that evolve organically--and how deftly she toes the lines of sentimentality and joyfulness, never in danger of misstepping because her voice is nothing if not convincing. I figure those two effects must be mutually reinforcing because here the interaction between vocals and music is replaced by a reliance on steady pop-friendly backing tracks, with the result that her voice, surely as good as ever, doesn't fluff my pillows in the same way. That damages the convincing factor, meaning that the sentimental ones sometimes slip into schlock and the joyful ones into forced cheer.

A nice blend of 80s pop, blues, and a weird mix of raegae. Bonnie Raitt has a soulful and emotive voice that blends well with her band, when the genre is right. Nothing too complex as far as theme or song structure, but effective none the less.

Bland with an edge

Generic Kinda boring for me
