Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Basic reggae.

Let me neva tell you bout raga muffin business and ting

Although I can appreciate Peter Tosh's music, I'm afraid I got over-exposed to reggae, including this album, during my college days when I spent a few years hanging out with fellow stoners. No fault of Mr. Tosh's or his fellow reggae artists'.

This guy was murdered. Boom roasted.

Criminalize it (this album)

I pretty much got exactly what I expected going into this album. It’s definitely Reggae. Most of these songs sound incredibly similar to each other. It’s not bad, but I enjoyed hearing something different with Igziabeher(we all know Jesus smoked that good shit every day), and No Sympathy is the clear standout of the album. I really enjoyed that song and I am not at all surprised that Peter Tosh decided to bring it over to his solo album. Definitely legalize it tho. He’s got a point.

I have good news for Mr. Tosh.

this is my least favorite genre and this album is indicative of why. Every song is painfully linear and same-same. This one has the added benefit of being painfully drab

Not hugely into raggae, although it was pretty nice

I knew what the album would sound like just from the title.

Eh, wasn't memorable to me. I know I owned the cassette back in the day, and nothing came back to me besides the title song. 2/5

It's nice background music, I forgot I was listening to it on occasion (in a good way!) This is a reggae record. 2 / 5 stars.

Title song is catchy

I can appreciate it is a well made album, but I am simply not a fan of reggae at all so it just doesn’t appeal to me. Every track sounds extremely similar and it is quite boring in my humble opinion

Burn Babylon man

Je ne suis pas amateur de ragga

Legalize It is the debut album by Jamaican singer-songwriter and former Wailer - Bob Marley's band members - Peter Tosh. It's a semi-political piece about the potential legalization of cannabis - which still hasn't happened 47 years later. The title track was banned at release, but still became immensely popular and has been sampled many times since. This reggae album was good and has been certified platinum in the US. I enjoyed the chilled-out vibe of the music and it was cool listening to the track I've heard sampled so much in other songs. This is some quality reggae, but that was to be expected from an ex-Wailer who played with Bob Marley.

Average

I really should like reggae more but it just never does it for me - till your well runs dry is good though

Not really my thing.

Sure, let's legalize it, but this is some boring music. I'm not sure I'll ever "get" reggae. Not my cup of tea.

reggae...

it's good but I just don't like this kinda music. sorry

Too bad Tosh didn't live long enough to see his dream come true for much of the United States. Also, his wikipedia has a section on his Unicycling. I'm not sure that can be said of any other artist we've reviewed so far.

rly needed an edible for this one fav tracks: ketchy shuby no sympathy

fav tracks: no sympathy

It's an alright reggae album, I suppose. But where his old mate Marley was talking about race and inequality and politics, Tosh was ranting about... weed? Seems a bit shallow in comparison, doesn't it? Isn't there something a bit more pressing you could be talking about? I assumed I was missing some sort of cultural cues here so I listened closely... and found very little to convince me that there was something more going on here. There's a short conversation here about police brutality but, rather than face that head on, Tosh chooses to focus on the legalization of weed as the solution. Why not actually talk about systemic violence which is the real problem? In many ways, it's a great reggae album. The music is more approachable and enjoyable than most. It's just really solid reggae. The lyrics are just shallow and lame. What a shame.

I've never felt more cool at a stop light with my windows down. Nah, music was cool, but repetitive, with the singer repeating the same lines and without the catchy choruses that made Marley and Cliff so legendary.

Better than I expected, but still reggie, and pretty sleazy reggie at that. Louche

Not for me

got a slight contact high while listening to this album. i don’t enjoy it

Not bad, just really not my style. I appreciated some songs.

haha weed not much variety in the songs, but it's decent as background music

To my ears this sounds like every other generic bit of reggae that I have heard. The album on the list from Bob Marley was pretty good but this is reggae painting by numbers.

Dude. Weed. Music that makes you forget you're currently listening to music.

I don’t really disslike this album unlike other albums that i have rated 2/5 but it just feels so bland and lacking in the energy that i’ve heard in other reggae.

peter tosh is the type of name i'd expect a councilor from Reading to have. the name describes the type of man who is a dab hand with a spreadsheet and regularly knows how the rainfall this year is doing in comparison to last year. but in reality he is a boringly average reggae artist.

I wouldn't wipe my magnificent arse with this utter piece of crap. My grandparents would be turning in their graves if they knew I had to review this. They're not dead though. Not yet. The frail, sexy, grey beasts. You should see my grandmother's beasts. Quite breathtaking. Unbelievable nipples. And grandpa's foreskin deserves its own special place in history.

Well tosh me off. ✊💦

Not really interested, nothing jumped out at me.

Pretty basic 70s psychedelic blues. Not very subtle/nuanced in its message but whatever. Also didn’t listen to this one too intently cuz it got pretty boring

Man, Pete had me for 0:45 of Till Your Well Runs Dry. I was going to give him props for breaking up the monotony of the reggae sound, but then the chorus kicks in. Even the non-reggae part isn’t enough to improve my opinion of the album other than the reggae sound wasn’t actively annoying me. I’m not anti-reggae, but most of this album is slow paced and, in combination with the basic reggae sound, boring. The more upbeat tracks like Why Must I Cry were the best offering.

Sub-par reggae

Reggae overkill. 2/5

It's like an album devoted to god & weed.

Wailers-lite

Yeah alright 4/10

Jaa-a. Paitsi mitä vittua Till Your Well Runs Dry, yhtäkkiä kämästä rokkia.

Legalize it and don't critizise it :D kylhän nyt röökiäkin kritisoidaan vaikka on laillista. 2/5.

It was alright - I couldn't really get into it. I've heard worse albums though.

It’s fine

Pleasant eloquent reggae without a single banger. Just mash.

Not very memorable for me. Highlight Track: 6

It's not bad, but I prefer his work with the Wailers...meh - strong lyrics with a repetitive sound

It's reggae. Not much else to say about it. Best Tracks: Legalize It; Whatcha Gonna Do; No Sympathy

When I was growing up in Jamaica as a boy Bob Marley and Peter Tosh were a big deal, homegrown talent that were international stars. I was quite young so I didn’t quite get the hype. Listening to Tosh now I still don’t quite get the hype. It’s fairly pleasant sounding roots reggae but there’s nothing here to get excited about either.

typische reggea-album

wagwan jah! smoke da weed! 420 blaze it! legalize it!

Funny album. Musically nothing special.

Not my style of music.

Not really a fan. It was an ok album, just not my type of music.

not enough weed in my body to fully enjoy this

Ok to listen to, but a little mediocre to me. Won’t ever listen again

fine couldn't finish though not hs fault.

Pretty much what I expected - don't love it, but it's enjoyable music. Don't think I'm a huge reggae fan but I can appreciate the music and the statement this album is making

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: WHY MUST I CRY, Ketchy Shuby, Brand New Second Hand Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Fine reggae. I regret only giving Exodus a 3 more and more every day.

2.5 Not my cup of tea.

This might be my inexperience with this genre, but I don't know if this album brings anything unique to the table. It was fine music, but there was nothing that made me want to go back and listen again.

Amazingly I quite liked the vibe and I’m not a fan of reggae type music usually and I definitely do not subscribe to the use of cannabis !!

Doo Wop? Rhythm and Blues? Find ich auch positiv. Das negative: ich war gestern überhaupt nicht im Stimmung für (Entspannungs-) Reggae, und mit legalem, illegalem oder scheissegalem Gras hätte man mich jagen können. Kann Toshi nix für, aber so ist das nunmal. Diplomatische 2,4

“Legalize It” by Peter Tosh (1976) Finely sung songs of complaint are evocative only when the artist finds common ground and empathetic response in the listener. Peter Tosh doesn’t rise to that level. Whether he’s lamenting the law, the injustice of the enforcers, his failed relationships, or his loneliness, a serious listener will discern that his political and psychosocial critique comes across as puerile, petulant, and lame. And his religious summons to praise his god (“Igziabeher”) is self-serving, selective, and menacing. One may agree with his position, but it’s hard to pity. Now, the music is very appealing. Fine reggae grooves and clean, disciplined performances, especially in the percussion and the bass lines. Nice lead guitar stylings (“No Sympathy” and “Till Your Well Runs Dry”), with extraordinarily sensitive wah-pedal (“Burial”). Nice country/reggae fusion on “Till Your Well Runs Dry”. One could listen to this all day, if one could get past the utterly unpersuasive message. Don’t legalize marijuana because of its medical benefits or because God intends for us to smoke it (eye roll). Rather, legalize it because (1) it’s enjoyable (so I’m told—teehee); (2) we should live in a free society; and (3) the negative consequences of criminality outweigh the benefits. Stop kidding yourself. Or at least stop trying to kid everyone else. I’m not buying your argument, but I agree with your conclusion. Legalize it. However, just because I’m on your side doesn’t mean I don’t think you’re full of crap, bro. 2/5

I’m not super into reggae so this didn’t quite do it for me.

not a big reggae guy

There are a few moments here and there that I enjoyed, but if I want to hear this much about weed I’d rather listen to Sleep than be lulled to sleep by this record. Pick up the tempo, Pete.

perus reggae kamaa, ei säväytä

So far... Not really for me... Yep, didn't really enjoy.

Totally down for the cause but pretty difficult to listen to

Totally not my thing, but didn't hate it, much to my surprise. Sent me on a rabbithole of wiki research about the Rastafaris, so that was nice.

Reggae reaggae rekkaa! Muutaman biisin jaksaa kuunnella ja sitten loppuu into. Ehkä jossain palmun alla mojito kädessä jaksais arvostaa eri tavalla.

Ekan biisin aihe ratkaissut suosion?

I am sorry, i fucking hate reggae music though

Oh Christ here we go lol. I don't really mind this but it's just such cliche wannabe hippie fodder I find it hard to take seriously. This was better than the Bob Marley album tbh, although like all reggae it was just one "trick" rearranged a bunch of times. 2/5.

Not for me.

Only listened to 3 tracks which was plenty. It’s a firm no from me.

No me gustó

Probably the most stereotypical reggae album you could imagine. Most tracks have the exact same groove and progression. Not a fan of this one.

Bob Marley's appendix.

Reggae just isn’t it for me. Also, weed has been legal in my country for nearly ten years so yay we did it, and Peter helped!

we listened to like 5 reggae albums in this list and all of them have sounded identical to me. this is forty minutes of the same song. i'm staunchly opposed to drug criminalization, even boring drugs, so don't get me wrong here that the central political thrust of this album is good. fuck the police, obviously. the problem is that this is aggressively boring to listen to on top of the typical misogyny on these records. "till your well runs dry" and "brand new second hand" are exhausting. end my suffering.

Me no like reggae.

I don’t like reggae. And I don’t love it

Sophie - Not for me. Nothing against it but it just doesn’t really tick any boxes for me. So a low rating for personal listenability but I don’t think it’s bad music. 1/5

Banned song, instant myth. That pretty much says it all. Less smooth than Bob Marley, he helped nevertheless Reggae to come back hard in my teenage years, tied to weed culture. Repetitive, laid-back to the point of boredom… exactly the kind of reggae that just gets on my nerves.

El reggae no es mi estilo

When Me Shuby, You Feel Ketchy 1001 Albums Generator 249 (3/17/2026) Oh joy, another reggae album. Don't tell me, this one is about weed too! Whatever, I've accepted that this music works for other people, but it's not for me. Also, can you imagine if out of all the religions, the one that ends up being correct is the one that's kinda just about smoking pot? I will say that this album led me to read a bit more about Rastafaris, and I had no idea it was an offshoot of Christianity and that cannabis is considered a sacrament. Wow. 1.5/5, rounded down to 1. Favs: Legalize It Whatcha Gonna Do Least Fav: No Sympathy

I wonder what he wants legalised??? Legalise it: crap Burial: crap Whatcha gonna do: crap No sympathy: crap WHY MUST I CRY: crap Igziabeher (Let Jah be praised): crap Ketchy Shuby: crap Till your well runs dry: crap Brand new second hand: crap

Its reggae. At least it is not ska.

Stunningly uninventive. A great advert for not smoking dope.

Not interested

Look, this is a personal response and I can't really get around reggae like this.

This reggae album leans on relaxed, repetitive grooves and roomy bass lines that settle into a comfortable sway much like smoking a joint, which makes everything feel profound and revelatory to the one inhaling while everyone else just sees the same slow, looping drift with nowhere new to go.

Not for me

listening when: in the morning thoughts: hated it. it’s all reggae rating:

There’s good reggae, and then there’s this.

Holy shit I hate reggae. It all sounds the same, prove me wrong. Carribean Polka music.

Oh good, another Reggae album... At there aren't that many in the book. But really we only needed one of them, since they all sound the same. This one is so on the nose with the subject matter it got my eyes rolling throughout the entire time. This got me thinking. I know a few stoners and none of them listen to Reggae. Was this something that stayed in the 70's and 80's?

Could work but only during summer

Not great

Reggea. It's just not for me. And that's okay.

Does too much weed make you boring?

So fucking boring

This album is by, for, and about stoners, which I am not. It instead served as a cruel reminder that I am five hours away from the nearest beach. I probably would've had more fun with this if any part of it were accurate to the vibe in my life, but that simply isn't the world I live in.

I listened to most of this but skipped the last 2 tracks. I mean, it's reggae music. This album is up front about what it is. "Legalize It". I probably didn't need to listen to a single track from this. Idk, it just isn't my jam. Sorry, Mr. Tosh.

Meh. Very basic reggae. Nothing horrible, but nothing noteworthy. It would be fine in the background on vacation in the carribean. Otherwise, skip this one.

Kind of same-same. Reggae isn't my scene either really.

Not interested in Reggae music so I wont listen to this one

First song was funny but unlistenable "ants love it"?????? Skipped ahead to another song, genuinely painful, whatever Jake felt when listening to Cyndi Lauper I think I feel here

First song was unlistenable (but funny) so I made a proactive decision for my sanity to stop listening..

Same old, nothing ground breaking

not my type of music at all...

38 minutes of weed advertisement

Not really my style. I don't mind this kind of music in smaller doses, but 40 minutes of it got old fast.

I want to like Peter Tosh's solo stuff more than I do. The music isn't that interesting - not as creative and quirky as Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, Jimmy Cliff, etc etc. He has quite a complainy, lazy voice that works well in backing vocals for The Wailers but not so well as the frontman. Disappointing one, this. I'd put either of Steel Pulse's first two albums in this list over this one.

Absolute tosh.

One or two okay tracks. I find the concept dated and hard to truly get into, so the album is pretty meh

Every song sounds the same

Bohohoring.

Nicht so richtig meins

Weed is tight… got it. Thanks…

Not bad just not for me

I am going to take a pass

38 minutes of the same crappy song. Reggae sucks.

Monotonous.

Did not like this at all. Rubbish

Hate reggae

Don't do drugs, kids.

I. i really dont like reggae........ its was a bit hard to listen to, but not in the sense it was bad but i really felt like listening to everything else...... so yeah.... but i mean it respectfully

reggae is not for me

besides the political commentary about the drug war, there's very little interesting here. reggae has always failed to capture my attention because the singing is subpar and all the songs sound the same. maybe if I liked drugs I would like this more

Reggae. Solo entry from member of the Wailers. Nothing stands out. Simple songwriting. Mostly easy listening. 1.5/5

Listened to the first 3 songs and couldn’t finish the album

First song: terrible. I quit there

I do not like reggae, as it turns out

1 star

Boring

It's a shame but reggae just doesn't do it for me, the tracks are too same-y and chill

Til Your Well Runs Dry is a top tune, though not a patch on You Don't Miss Your Water which it's probably based on. Otherwise, tosh.

Some questionable attitudes to women here. Not a fan.

While it's not entirely as horrible as Marley, it's still really horrible. I really just don't understand reggae. It's almost always soooo boring paired with being played sloppy and being really sluggish and it just irritates the crap out of me. I can't wrap my head around how people can be capable of enjoying this. Oh wait, yeah, probably the answer is drugs.

I like plenty of ska from first to third wave. It seems like reggae would be something I should enjoy as well. I went into this hoping that maybe I would find some enjoyable reggae. I did not. What I did find was a headache after tapping my fingers just waiting for it to end. I did not enjoy any aspect of this album at all except that it wasn't especially lengthy.

Like the same song over and over and ov ...... Why am I so hungry?

September 29, 2021 God why is there so much fucking reggae on here?! Just not my thing.

Hogwash

rastaman ganjaman 1/5 = 4/20

Mindnumbing lyrics and repetetiveness. Uninspired. Weed is basically the whole identity of this album. Obnoxious.

Bad bad bad bad bad.

Reggae kinda makes me giggle. Wouldn't listen again but it's kinda fun.

Criminalise this

Reggae not for me

A hateful pandering to fans of Bob Marley and terribly forgettable. I struggled with one listen.

Poorly written, terrible lyrics, offers nothing of interest

Interesting. Not my thing but neat.
