Reviews (page 6 of 8)

I went back and forth heavily with this one. Some of the songs were more folk sounding and I quite enjoyed, but towards the end they got honestly difficult to listen to both voice and music. I wish I could give the benefit of the doubt but the second half continued to get worse.

FK YEAH let's GOOOO CUTS LIKE A KNIFE is a bange..... .... wait who the fuck is this? ugh.... "Americana" paint by numbers schlock. JFC his music just bores the shit out of me. It's a lazy critique but what if it really does bore me?? Am I supposed to not write that?? Who the hell are you anyways.... [sorry sorry....I think this album is actually making me edgy and angry] I'm not really a Bryan fan but I honestly would at least enjoy some of his guilty pleasure singles a shittonne more than this. 3/10 2 very dim stars.

Crazy we get this dudes first two albums pretty close to each other. Boring af about halfway through. Please no more Ryan Adams. The album had its moments, but overall was pretty dull to me. Classic boring singer/songwriter

I didn't give it a great listen. But nothing caught me in this album as important

it was music, just not exciting at all

Not a fan of the 2000s in music, I guess.

It was a bit meh, the album was far too long at 1hr 29 and it had no standout tracks for me. This is way I’ve rated it a 2. Nothing offensive, alright background music but nothing memorable and it’s not something I would play again

New York, New York 2.6 Firecracker 2.4 Answering Bell 2 La Cienega Just Smiled 1.8 The Rescue Blues 2.5 Somehow, Someday 2.3 When the Stars Go Blue 1.9 Nobody Girl 2.2 Sylvia Plath 1.7 Enemy Fire 3 Gonna Make You Love Me 2.7 Wild Flowers 2.3 Harder Now That It's Over 2 Touch, Feel & Lose 2.4 Tina Toledo's Street Walkin' Blues 2.2 Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd 2.3 Score: 2.26875

Ugh. I tried, I really tried, but I can’t get past knowing what an abusive POS he is. Having my own experiences with men like this, I’m too biased to try and enjoy this.

Favorites: New York, New York, When The Stars Go Blue, Nobody Girl, Touch, Feel & Lose, Tina Toledo's Street Walkin' Blues

Ryan Adams music just does not do it for me

Favorite: Nobody Girl

It's been a while since I've listened to this album. I used to really enjoy Ryan Adams and this album, for me, was one I would return too. But, like I said, it's been a while since I've listened to it. And this time it was just...boring seems too strong a word. One note, maybe? It has some good songs, I admit...but they stack the first half of the record. Then it all gets a bit mopey-samesey. Maybe I'm simply not in the same place that I was as a mopey 17 year old, so the music doesn't connect as deeply or effectively as it once did. Either way, it'll probably be some time before I listen to this record again.

Not for me. Soft rock, not enough to keep me interested or engaged.

Man, that was pretty boring. I think ryan lacks any sort of interest edge or character in his voice. At worst, it sounds like bland radio music you’d hear like in a movie. At best, some shit you’d hear on someone’s Spotify at a family’s bbq that nobody’s really paying attention to. Not giving it a 1 because it didn’t actively harm me to listen to.

This album was just fine. It felt a little over-produced, which was a little distracting to me. Everything feels like it was lab-engineered by a group of sound engineers to sound machine perfect and it just comes off feeling artificial. "Nobody Girl", the longest track on the album, seemed like it was trying to channel the alternative anthems of the early 90s, but it failed to capture the emotion that made them great. I didn't dislike the album, but there wasn't a standout song to be found.

у нас уже есть Спрингстин дома

Okay music. Kinda boring.

This is a bummer to review. It's fine everywhere but feels like it doesn't do anything. Like it almost tricks me to think "this sounds fine" when it's really dull. Too long and I feel like there's nothing behind this in terms of emotion.

I like the opener but the rest of it is really boring. It’s a rock record with a heavy southern/country sound and I’m not a fan of it because it goes on a while and it’s a very samey sound.

in het begin was ik blij dat het NIET Bryan Adams was... op het eind niet meer zo zeker daarvan

I've heard this guy's name for years but only really know of him from Phoebe Bridgers (and other women who have said that they have had relationships with him that allegedly led to abuse), so I'm kind of predetermined to not like the guy. Sometimes I do alright with separating the the artist from the art but I'm struggling a bit here. I do think some of these songs are good, and I can see why people would like him, but as I get up to a chorus of him saying "Cause you're nobody girl You're a nobody girl You're a nobody, girl You're a nobody girl Nobody girl" I just feel kind of bleh, and wonder if this is just his overall attitude permeating through his art. It's a 2/5. The songs aren't that terrible but he can fuck off.

Meh, nothing special.

Ohne Höhepunkte, und ziemlich verstaubt

Not bad, but way too dad-rock styled for me

it’s so crazy how the mv was recorded before the 9/11. he’s reminds me of ed sheeran.. or should i say ed sheeran reminds me of ryan adams.

For me it’s basically the shrug emoji. It’s fine for the most part. But far too long. 2.5/5

The fabled dickhead who makes completely middle of the road music. Usually dickheads either makes really good or really bad music.

I have a theory that all the "beige parents" were huge Ryan Adam fans in their teen years. It would explain a lot. There were a couple of songs that I enjoyed, but not enough to lift the rest of this flat and tedious album up.

The album cover gave me some John Cougar-Mellancamp mixed with Bruce Springsteen vibes. I should have clocked the Abercrombie bracelets sooner but it just felt soft to me. It’s a fine album I suppose but it is absolutely not for me. It felt like the lyrics and singing and even a lot of the music is meant to feel passionate but I’m not sure if it was. It’s just far too safe for me to enjoy it. He leaned pretty country in the second half but still didn’t feel like he was singing about anything. Maybe a 3 is the objective rating but it’s a 2 because I was just so underwhelmed.

Disappointed to find out he's writing a seemingly patriotic album for Americans when he's from the UK. Sound is good, but made me think of Bruce Springsteen who is better. Sad to hear he's a crappy person. He wouldn't make it in today's music scene tbh.

Too long

Never heard of this guy. Keep thinking of Bryan Adams, who I assume has no relation. Was it purely coincidence that this album was released two weeks after 9/11? There are plenty of themes of patriotism and Americana, so all of this had to be written before then. An oddly opportune release in that case. Anyway, this sounds of its time, but it all felt pretty unremarkable if I'm being honest. Just felt it lacked soul, which is kinda ironic given the album is trying to exude soul all throughout. Didn't leave much of an impression on me I guess.

Dime a dozen soft rock, I was over it by track 5. Long, repetitive, uninspired. Above all booooooooooring.

This fits into some place of the transition between pop and country, the two genres I most dislike. I suppose it wasn’t pure awful, just not any good.

point9.

Nothing groundbreaking, pretty mid You lose a star when you’re a sexual predator

A slog

Shades of derivative American 90s MOR bland meaningless FM rock radio pap. Shades? I mean pure. Like an album of 90s young adult tv show soundtracks produced my Van Morrison. *K-Tel presenter voice* "If you love Friends, Dawson's Creek, Party of Five and Brown-Eyed Girl, you're gonna love Gold from Ryan Adams." It didn't even have Summer of '69. It's bad, but not Morrissey bad. Two stars.

This was too long and I was bored. I'm glad it wasn't actually a double album like he wanted. 2.49/5

I remember when this came out thinking it had some decent tunes but was a bit bland Didn’t find much cause to return to it in the following 20+ years Listening to it now it still sounds blandly ok, has some decent tunes but now we know he’s a bit of a tosser so 2 is all he’s getting

Nope. Average at best

The first two songs were absolutely amazing. New York, New York was a blast front to back, feeling like a spiritual successor to Jack and Diane, and Firecracker had that explosive harmonica on it. Unfortunately, the rest was a fucking drag. It'd be one thing if it was a 40ish minute album, but it's 70 minutes long and most of that is pretty unexciting. The only other track I was interested in was Gonna Make You Love Me. Really sad such a strong start couldn't be seen through to the end.

# 464 : 22/04/2025 : Gold I don't know who this guy is, so I am basing this on the album I just listened to and well it was ok, started fine, dragged on a bit, and ended kind of slow. Not my cup of tea.

slow torture

Sounded whiny and went on twice as long as it should've.

Wasn't my jam. Modern pop-country. A bit generic. Reading the Wiki page, he was whining that his label truncated the album. He should have thanked his label, this was too long and too boring as it is. Should have been "trimmed" by another 10 songs.

I don’t care for him as a person, and why was this so long?

like listening to an (even) duller David Gray album

It's like Diet Springsteen No for me

Meh. 2/5

wooden spoon

There’s enough artistry to this that I may have rated it much higher if Adams wasn’t an awful individual which comes across in the lyrics and sucks most of my enjoyment out of this. I song telling a “girl” she’s nobody followed by how he wants his own personal Sylvia Plath to bathe him? No thank you.

4/1/25. Just okay. Well written songs, just boring to me. I never said these reviews were objective!

way too long, I was bored at the end and I think if he had cleaned it up a bit I would’ve given it 3 stars

This is okay. Bit slow, bit monotonous. Some cool instrumentals though. Decent voice but can be quite grating at times lol. Most of the songs are too looong.

Remarkable only in that every song seemed to be worse than the one that came before it.

Fine, kind of boring and forgettable.

Not for me

Not for me

This album made me feel nothing at all. Generic. Trite. Milquetoast. Worst of all, boring.

Was okay, but I don't get why this is supposedly excellent??

very normal

Tried to be Dylan, but confused him for Bruce Springsteen so ended up as John Cougar Mellencamp.

My Kryptonite. dear lord no

It's ok

I've never heard of Ryan Adams or this album, it's not bad. Very chilled out rock music. Nothing really caught my attention but it's not bad overall. More of a relax and listen type of album for doing something social while listening to this in the background.

Okay, I am SHOOK to find out that "When the Stars Go Blue" is a Ryan Adams original (and the most streamed song on the album). His singing here is pitchy and off key. He makes this lovely song quite miserable to listen to with the way he sings it. I am much more used to the Tim McGraw version, which is in every way superior. Looks like it's been covered by quite a few other artists, as well. I can't imagine any cover of it being much worse than Ryan's original version. Frankly, I don't know why this album is on here. It's not exciting, and nothing about it reads as "essential". Sure, it's Ryan Adams' best selling album, but what makes it or him so significant? And it's not even his only album on this project, so that only increases my critical ear's search for something important or noteworthy here. Ultimately, I didn't find it.

As gangsta rap goes, it’s pretty good. But when I think of all the wrong that was and is motivated by this genre, I feel a sense of hopelessness for society. Certainly no empathy. You reap what you sow.

Too poppy. Not for me.

Its never good when the only reason I have heard of him is because he was called out during the Me Too movement. Bad test in my mouth from the start! Without that, there is some heartfelt sweet lyrics and some fun songs. But then thinking about it, makes them smarmy and kind of gross. Then you get to Nobody Girl and I don't really get what he is doing there. Would I listen to some of them again, for sure, especially if I didn't know it was him. Will I ever seek him out....no, but that is due more to his personal issues and not necessarily the music.

Lost a star for just being way too long without doing anything new or interesting from the start.

no!! tracklist makes me want to fight him remember when he covered an entire taylor swift album within a year of her releasing it? this guy sucks!! album cover is giving ryan adams as billie joe Armstrong as Bruce Springsteen.. not a compliment an hour and ten minutes is too long for this.. he could have gotten away with a TIGHT 35/40 minutes but this is most definitely a man who overstays his welcome no thanks ❤️

i love america

4.5/10

Varsin kädenlämpöinen pop-rock-levy ja lähinnä huvittava kansi. 2/5

Just not for me. I hated the sound of the production almost immediately. It’s just so radio friendly and boring and it basically put me to sleep. The only thing stopping this from getting a “1 star” is the one hit song on this album is ok. But honestly the whole thing is easily forgettable.

Great production and vocals. But this kind of music is not my cup of tea at all

A bit too smooth for my taste. Feels just a bit uninspired, like the most middle-of-the-road soft rock you can think of. No songs really stood out. Not bad per se, just bland.

I worried this might be one of the good ones and I’d have to factor in how much of a Mondo Creep the man is. Fortunately it’s not. He’s a Mondo Creep and he sounds pretty gooby doing this pop rock thing.

Dull and repetitive

Nada que me llame la atención. Rock de muy buena producción, pero muy alejado de lo que soy.

I found this less off-putting than the other Ryan Adam's album I've gotten so far. It's still felt very flat, lacking feeling despite obviously trying to be soulful.

at least a couple impressive things ab this, obviously its a long album but it seems like a good balance between having a clearly cohesive style and making sure that every track is distinct. and as with heartbreaker , occasionally a melody jumped out at me as Particularly lovely (tho nothing to the extent of come pick me up), and as a followup to heartbreaker i appreciate the stylistic swing. but im sure u cant blame me for fucking groaning as soon as this popped up !!! if my cold distance towards this dudes art was taxing on a 50 minute record it has no chance on a 70 minute one. mostly just though about how much better my time would prob be used listening to more bruce springsteen and/or neil young. ig theres no telling how id feel ab this if i had the chance to form an emotional relationship with this guys art Without the knowledge that he's a piece of shit but we do not live in that universe and i cant help but feel like there are far more distinctive and consistently moving artists that could have occupied the two slots he takes up in this godforsaken book

Not really for me. Bit long too.

He sucks, his music is fine

My sister used to love this album. Me not so much.

I want to like him, but just don't. Definitely appreciate the more stripped down, singer songwriter style and country flavor of the music. It's just dishwater sounding to me.

2 estrelas

Why do you sing with a British accent?

Serviceable, but 70 minutes??? C’mon, we get the point after like a song and a half

Country alternativo. Tostonazo. Un 2.

Don’t know why he’s on here so much, it’s bland as fuck, 2*

Captures the country sound without coming on too strong with it. (contrast this idea with something like "Banjo Odyssey" by The Dead South-don't listen to that, it's awful). Creates a nice balance with Folk Rock. There's a couple bangers on here, most notably "Nobody Girl" and "Gonna Make You Love Me More." The other side of this though, is that there 80 minutes of bland, repetitive, generic country/pop/folk rock in here. I can't find it in myself to care for most of this album, especially for songs like "Wildflowers." The other interesting thing is that he proves that he can sing in some songs ("Where the Stars are Blue"), but then he maintains a shaky voice for most of the album that takes away from the music when the focus is his vocals. If he cut out half of this album it would be a 3, maybe it's still a 2.5. It is competent music after all, I just can't care for it.

This is fine, but nowhere near interesting enough to justify being over an hour and I think I could have happily died without hearing it. Another example of CD era quantity over quality. I was just thinking it sounds like the sort of music you’d hear on Scrubs, and Wikipedia has confirmed my suspicions.

I think most of the songs I liked on here evoked other artists for me. There's some good stuff here, but most of it feels a bit monotonous just doesn't do much for me. This is a case of solid musicianship paired with forgettable vacuous songs.

Buttered toast, buttered toast that's been left on the plate and gone a bit soggy. No idea why this album is on this list.

Artiste inconnu. Rien de captivant dans cet album, à part quelques chorus (trop rares) de cuivre, harmonica, guitare. Pas désagréable mais beaucoup trop long. =>2/5

Couldn't get through the whole album, as it was very lackluster. Nothing on this album provided interest enough to keep listening.

Pretty boring, too long and not helped by the air of douchebaggery. I’d rather listen to punisher.

Hubris (noun) /ˈhjuːbrɪs/

Adequate production, inoffensively boring and generic from a songwriting point of view. GOLD adds nothing new to the genre, even for 2001 standards. The only artistic risk taken on the album was his album cover with the upside down American flag. The lyrics don't resonate and his vocals are annoying.

Bland and inoffensive

++: Touch, Feel & Lose, Tina Toledo's Street Walkin‘ Blues, The Fools We Are as Men, Cannonball Days +: New York, New York, Firecracker, La Cienega Just Smiled, The Rescue Blues, Nobody Girl, Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd., Rosalie Come and Go, Sweet Black Magic +-: Answering Bell, Somehow, Someday, When the Stars Go Blue, Sylvia Plath, Enemy Fire, Gonna Make You Love Me, The Bar Is a Beautiful Place -: Wild Flowers, Harder Now That It's Over 5,5/10

Too soft and boring for my taste

Load of old Americana country shite

mid, check back later

OK songs by a shitty guy

I found this album rather boring.

This is country/pop type of music that doesn't do much for this listener. After several days of a lot of fun and little "good" sleep, I found myself nodding off a little bit. Probably wasn't a good idea to relisten to this album when I'm exhausted. I didn't find anything too adverse about this guy, but outside of Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd, there was nothing that generated any excitement either. And I probably wouldn't have mentioned Goodnight, Hollywood except I just got back from spending a few days there and me and my wife had a helluva good time. Love you, boy! 2

I wish Ryan Adams had stuck with the alternative country stuff instead of switching to lukewarm rock. It is understandable why this album got so big in the US - it is very American, and the time of the release coincided with the rise in patriotism after September 11. But why was it certified gold in the UK? Surely the Brits should know better.

I was hoping his process would throw up an album to prove to me that country music isn’t all dull, boring and bland. This album wasn’t it though.

The upbeat songs were better, but blimey this album goes on way to long.

So many of these are blending together, not in form or style or anything, just as "pretty good, not sure why it's on here"

I swear everything about this is generic.

Something about it seemed off. It had some good riffs from time to time.

Boring

was ok - nothing earth shattering - played find in the background without distracting or inspiring me - I guess 1001 albums is a lot if this one makes the cut.

after the first 15 minutes, all songs blended together...

I guess it was pretty good, kind of what I expected. Ryan Adams is notoriously a dick though so he doesn't get many stars from me

It didn’t piss me off or anything, but it sure did absolutely nothing for me.

solidly mid, but desperately wants to be a 5/5. this guy's also a complete creep, and if this is as good as it gets i'm good.

Don't listen to it again

Fairly generic. Songs were quite flat and uninspiring. 2/5 Won’t listen again

this album isn't good enough to be so incredibly long

Eeeeeh. It had some OK songs, especially on the first half. But overall, I didn’t like this much. I can see where people like his music, but there’s just some quality about it that I’m not liking. Maybe it’s because he’s an abusive douchebag.

What's so special about this?

problematic

Every song sounds like some other classic rock song, but then turns out to be some kind of flesh-eating bug on the genre itself. It comes to life for "Nobody Girl," but doesn't have an original thought the rest of the time.

Real middle of the road super forgettable music. The Mayo of music

I don’t care about a normal length album of this. Especially not a double album. The Teenuh song is the only good song.

The third song sounds like an imitator Van Morrison. SMH

boring, goes on forever, AND the guy's a nonce! 2 stars

The second Ryan Adams album Iv come across on the list, that is two too many. This one being 90 minutes long too. To be fair it’s an inoffensive album, that stops it getting 1 star. Shame Ryan himself wasn’t as inoffensive himself and not a Fucking Nonce.

*fart noise*

Never heard of this guy, not my thing

so boring. la cienega is a great tune but couldn't be arsed with the rest of it

2.5 stars. Ryan Adams is clearly a good songwriter, just so many songs are long and slow, not only does it make the album drag the songs don't often distinguish themselves from each other. "Nobody Girl" is an interesting analysis on a self proclaimed free spirit, but does it have to be 9 minutes long? "Gonna Make You Love Me" is an upbeat songs, but isn't interesting lyrically. "Firecracker" is folksy with harmonica, and there are some gentle and touching songs like "La Cienega..." "When the Stars Go Blue" and "Wild Flowers." It's elevated coffee shop music.

Milquetoast at best. Forgettable delivery of almost every song

2/5. Perfectly boring and unoriginal. Too long by half.

not for me

hated it before i even started bc of the album cover painfully long and repetitive

Just not really at all as good as Heartbreaker, which I really did enjoy. This one just feels so longwinded and doesn't pull really any emotion into the songs. 4/10

Starts off strong enough, but man is this thing long. Several songs could have been cut, especially in the super slow latter half of the record. Favorite tracks: "New York, New York", "Nobody Girl"

The album cover and the low global rating had me concerned when I hit play. Listening to New York, New York I was thinking this isn't SO bad, is it? But as the songs wore on I was less and less impressed. By the time I got to Somehow, Someday I thought someone must be kidding. How insipid and generic can you be and still take yourself as seriously as he appears to take himself? It isn't terrible, even undeniably catchy in places, but it sure isn't great. The simplest songs are the best. Middle of the road 2.5 stars rounding down for length.

Bored me to death. Maybe for some other day when I'm in a different mood. DNF

Never heard of this guy, and I can’t say I was terribly impressed. It’s very generic. The slight folksy charm isn’t strong enough to overcome the bland country-pop sound. This has been an unusual week of all 2s and 4s - here’s another 2 to close it out, unfortunately.

Like some, I though this was BRYAN Adams, alas, not... Eh. OK - nothing stands out - your typical coffee house acoustic sets. He could be playing in a bar, or live on a street corner and maybe you'd throw him mom loose change.

It was OK. Sounded like songs from every rom-com movie ever made.

Не понравилось. Надоело. Не смог дослушать эти нудные завывания

Too bland

I really thought it was going to be better, I was hopeful after I heard New York, New York but it just never delivered.

Meh. New York New York was good. The rest was just blah.

it definitely overstays it's welcome.

Not my thing. Boring and to long. 5/10

country schlock, not inherently unlistenable but surely doesn't deserve a place on this list.

There's something about this project I can't put my finger on. The higher energy songs sound plasticky, and the slower songs sound silly - that is, everything on this double LP is a bit too clean and overproduced for what the intended tone seems to be. Adams's voice is without flaw or character, seemingly without region. The project has no grit or lasting poignancy to match its time of release. If Bowie made plastic soul, is this then "plastic Americana"?

Worth listening to, unfortunately a little too simple and straightforward.

One time I was hitting on a girl at a bar, and she told me that she like Ryan Adams, and I said that I also liked Ryan Adams. That was the only time I have ever spoken about or thought of Ryan Adams. Having now listened to Ryan Adams for the first time, I can say that I do not, in fact, like Ryan Adams. I don't particularly dislike this, I just don't find it very interesting or meaningful. It just feels like he's doing a Springsteen/Mellencamp type thing, but like 15 years too late. He has a nice voice, and everything is pleasant enough, but it doesn't belong on this list. Also, I've been listening to this album for what feels like two hours now, and I'm only on the fifth song Also, I didn't end up going home with that girl. I think she could sense that I didn't really like Ryan Adams 2/5

Nice Voice but not really my kind of music

Some classic post-9/11 patriotic pop. God, that album cover is cringe. The music itself is not bad at all, some generally inoffensive roots-inspired pop. It's just too long. Condense the stronger tracks to a single record and it's be better.

Boring, irritating, uninteresting. I honestly thought its a Bryan Adams album that I don't know of, and I was mightily disappointed when I heard first few songs. It's just a country with a bit more sound and maybe electric guitars. Positives - I survived "Listened to Ryan Adams" challenge.

Du country/rock très correct. Ce n'est pas si mauvais, mais c'est long et redondant. Il n'y a pas grand chose qui se démarque, c'est un peu trop prudent comment son. 4/10

Plätschert dahin. Nichts besonderes.

Was alright but not good enough to be that long

God, this took way too long, especially given how boring it was.

Dude writes music for the opening titles of a 2000s rom-com. Specifically, the shot of the main character’s Toyota Corolla driving across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Tolerable as background music during the lunch rush at a bar & grill.

It's not super bad, but it's also just not interesting at all.

Really didn’t enjoy this one. I actually couldn’t make it through the whole thing, only 3/4s which is unusual as I would usually give an album a few listens through before making up my mind. Boring and derivative.

Grammy Nominierung für bestes Rock Album. Das ist also Rockmusik. Schon wieder etwas gelernt.

Beetje saai

Instantly forgettable and unremarkable. Never heard of this guy before and I think I know why. Zzzzz Nothing particularly bad about this album, but nothing good either. All songs permanently exited my consciousness immediately after ending. Two stars, not because it was bad, but because… zzzzzzz … oh sorry; I fell asleep in the middle of writing this review.

Idk not good, folky singer songwriter type stuff, didn’t like

just finished it and cant remember a single song, not even the one that ended 20 seconds ago

Got bored of the same old, slow, americana vibe after about 7 or 8 songs and then realized I had another 8 songs to go....ugh this one has been sitting on my list and I'd been dreading it.

I'm having a hard time putting what I don't like about this album into words, but nonetheless there's no doubt that I think this album is not very good. Ryan Adams feels like a cheap imitation of what earlier singer-songwriters were. I'm not a fan of his voice, the lyrics do nothing for me, and the music is nothing special. I'm struggling to see any real sense of why this could possibly stand out enough from anything else in the genre to be on this list.

That's the definition of boring.

30 minute album would be 3. 1h hour of not very dynamic and varied music is just too much

Based on the cover with the messy black hair and the upside down flag I was expecting more American Idiot than Country for Idiots. Cheesy lyrics and bad solos make up most of this album. I think this guy got lucky with timing and having a vaguely familiar name. Things improve a little toward the end with Tina Toledo, still a bit generic though.

Dosadan

He does handstands in grand fashion, but he's a genuine asshole.

Country alternativo. Tostonazo. Un 2.

Genuinely baffled as to why this is on here. It’s not terrible but it’s just bland and unmemorable., The voice, the lyrics, the music. It’s not groundbreaking, era defining, different. I don’t get it. And I know he’s a terrible person but if we followed that criteria many on this list would have to go. Isn’t it notable though that they always start by denying everything, no matter how many women come forward. Too many men…

Yawn. Boring middle of the road folk-rock.

Toivoisin Ryanille hieman nöyryyttä, levy on liian pitkä. Yhdentekevää musiikkia, ihan kivaa välillä mutta vain tv-sarjan kohtauksen tausta -mielessä. When the stars go blue on hyvä.

Poppari toteuttaa roots-unelmansa, mutta tyytyy pitkälti geneeriseen soitteluun. Lopputulos kuulostaa perustasolla mukiinmenevältä, ja LP:llä on yksi kova biisi, joten kaksi pistettä on mielestäni perusteltua. Koomisen pituuden takia voisi tulla toisiinkin ajatuksiin.

I'll bring honest, didn't get past the 3rd song. Boring af

It started out as easy listening road trip music, but I got pretty sick of it halfway through and didn't make it all the way to the end. Too country ish.

Tuneful and easy to listen to, but completely unmemorable, and far too long - I didn't need an hour plus of this. Answering Bell sounds like The Weight crossed with Van Morrison. Oh, and add another to the count of creeps encountered here. Judging on musical merit only, though some bias may have crept in.

Dreary ‘feel good’ Americana.

Good ol American boy music, makes me wanna hop in my pickup after workin long hours at the mill Dnf

Alright, but tuned out most of it

Pretty good. Not really my cup of tea. Likely will not listen again.

It’s definitely not the most unpleasant thing I’ve heard, but this album commits the cardinal sin of music: it’s pretty boring and lame. Some songs sound like they were written by Ed Sheeran, some sound like they were written by the kids from the School of Rock movie, and the rest sound like typical 2000s pop rock. Torn between a 1 and a 2 rating

I missed the boat on this one when it came out and I'm not disappointed. Gold and Ryan Adams in general is often used for the montages in shows like Parenthood or This Is Us to illustrate "This is a hard time for character A" or "Character B just learned a hard lesson and now they're a better person" ...and the viewer nods their head in agreement. This is like bubblegum music went to college and began 'experimenting' for 90 minutes. No shame in that, but we know who you are.

Rescue Blues copies the riff from Summer Holiday by Cliff Richard. Other than that, it's that bland Americana that critics go nuts for but that is actually just 70s blandness with a noughties production sheen. When the Skies Go Blue is nice.

2/5 Best: Firecracker Worst: Wild Flowers

Kind of whiny, all a bit too serious, this is the sort of music you just never hear in the UK, as it's aimed squarely at American listeners. I actually liked the Nobody Girl song and there were a few places where I started to get into it a little, but mainly because I identified the music as being similar to another, better band. It also took me to the end of the first disc to realise that one of the female backing vocalists was actually the main guy singing in a squeaky voice. Not awful, but very cheesy and no real substance. Having to listen to an hour and a half of petulance about relationships got dull fast. Two stars.

Not gold, not even Bronze.

Most of the songs I didn't care for, but "Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd." is beautiful.

Making a tired, exploitative Americana album right after 9/11 feels slimy and gross, kind of like Ryan Adams

The record turned him down from having a double record, so this guy just threw a shit ton of songs as a bonus side. Dude, there's a reason you got rejected. No one could stand this garbage. How much of this pop Americana shit did I not press the skip button for? Could be worse; it's bearable when you try embodying Springsteen or Dylan and not completely get it wrong. But yeah, no memorable or outstanding tracks. It's all meh. Most bearable: Rescue Blues, When the Stars Go Blue, Enemy Fire, Tina Toledo

I find Ryan’s stuff very generic. Boring

Decent. Nothing ground breaking IMO. Vanilla is a good way to describe it.

This is fine, though its so smoothed out that there really isn't much to latch on to.

I remember not caring about this when it came out and apparently nothing has changed.

Pretty dull and over-long.

It began with the correct guess that an hour and a quarter of Ryan Adams would be less than pleasant. Before the nosedive in the second half, though, there are hints of a sound that goes beyond Springsteen imitation; Even flashes of light in that long tail. Still, it boggles that this got an official double LP release.

Fine. There’s no reason for this to be here, but it’s tolerable. I’m glad I didn’t have to listen to ‘Side Four’, though, and nobody has to hear his nine-minute opus. Overall, extremely OK.

not for meeeeeee

Very easy-to-listen music, but it ends up being so generic that it's hard to care with it after 30 min, and it keeps playing.

Okayish

Idk if I’m just in a bad mood but I…did not like this. It’s fine but I felt unimpressed throughout. Good writing I guess. I’ll go 2.4

Maybe Winona Ryder was bad in bed? Or at least dull, because that's what this album is, with any of the better moments stuff that everyone has done before and done it better.

This is fine, but a bit dull. If you're going to do an album cover like that (looks like the Green Day guy doing Springsteen) it probably needs a bit more to it than this has (sounds like Buble doing Springsteen/Dylan). Feels like there's some talent there, but all the edge has been sanded away and you're left with something that is perfectly pleasant, but uninteresting. 2/5.

A Bob Dylan light? No thank you

This review does not pretend to understand the praise of mediocrity here. Ryan Adams is objectively good, but subjectively speaking there is no mortal requirement to have spent time on this.

Nothing special

This was a very just ok album. Nobody Girl almost stuck out to me enough to add, but after going back a second time. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. Giving a 2 with no adds.

I respect it, but its nothing great to me.

It dawned on me listening to this again that in spite of all that's been written about how this album connected to NYC right after 9/11, maybe the two best songs on the whole thing have LA icons in the title. Go figure. I can't pretend that I didn't buy this record in 2001 and listen to it alot, but as I suspected it doesn't hold up and certainly pales in comparison to Springsteen's take on roots rock. In fact, my favorite track on the whole thing is "Enemy Fire," which feels nothing like Springsteen at all. But it also sort of shows just how prolific Ryan Adams has been at trying on too many sounds without maybe ever really landing on one that's all his own. Actually, now that I've made it to "Wild Flowers," I'm enjoying this one. There's no need for the three songs between this and "Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd." And no reason whatsoever for this album to be 16 tracks long, but that's Ryan Adams for you. Quantity > Quality.

Lukewarm mush.

Started out decent but I was bored by the 30 minute mark. Glad the label clipped the last 5 songs b/c this is already too long.

Pretty bland and forgettable

Pretty generic Americana rock - not sure what the fuss is about. Also apparently he's a dickhead? My top pick is 'Gonna Make You Love Me' - the backing track of synthy keyboard (?) was interesting.

Boring, too long and just a bit shit

Really dull generic Americana.

Whitebread, middle-class honky-tonk-ish music for those who don't want to be offended.

Hmm made two-thirds of the way through this. Basic indie singer-songwriter from the noughties. Clearly a very nasty man as well. Let's hope this is his one and only entry.

Not listened to any Ryan Adams before, not likely to happen again intentionally, too radio safe for me. Some of the songs had a stones sound to them, these were better, but the album on the whole, not for me

Am I somehow not white enough for this album? Rarely during the 70 minute playtime does Ryan Adams display any true emotions while at the same time trying his hardest to sound like he’s playing and singing with only half an interest in the songs. There are highlights in the delightful “La Cienega Just Smiled” and “When the Stars Go Blue”, but songs that were obviously considered centerpieces, by length alone, like “Nobody Girl” falls flat through. If this is Adams’ Gold I’m not looking forward to his coming silver and bronze albums that are to appear on this list.

favourite song: enemy fire least favourite song: sylvia plath awful album. astounds me that guitar music this boring and uninspired was coming out of the us around the same time as the strokes released is this it.

I guess this is a case of separating the art from the artist... and both kinda stink.

No hate to Ryan Adams but this album has no business on this list. This is so generic and boring that it is hard to imagine why anyone would need to listen to this. I can only imagine this became culturally significant given it's release around 9/11.

Not for me

This really irritated me for some reason. Didn’t help that I looked Ryan Adams up halfway through and read up on him.

I don't really get the hype around him

It’s fine. 2.5/5

Was never into Ryan Adams. Gold has quite a few songs on it, with various styles including folk, rock, and county. None of the songs were memorable enough to want me to listen again.

I thought to myself that this is equivalent to a Mandy Moore album, unremarkable and inoffensive. Color me surprised when I found out he used to be married to her.

Неинтересно, час это много

Semi-talentless Springsteen impression that goes for FAR too long. He clearly WANTED to be doing a "poignant stories of middle America"-type thing, but much as he can clearly play and sing and whatnot he just isn't that INTERESTING. Was he the winner of a TV singing show? Or is he the son of a record producer or something? This has the feel of something that a record company would never have given the green light, let alone such an expensive production job, without an executive giving some kind of override order. And then, after boring me for over an hour with middling soft rock, there was some laughable "end of a rock opera" bookend tune. Boooooooring. 2/5.

I'm probably not being super generous to the guy here, but it feels like he has a checklist for what he thinks a good song is, which includes singing in a really breathy voice that will get all the girls on the quad to pay attention to you, but also somehow he's really smarmy about it? It's not objectively bad, but it's also not something I'm interested in at all. Part of it might be that this is the album with the 9/11 song on it, and I'm just over it. Best track: Nobody Girl

I'm a bit torn on this one. There were definitely parts of this album that were good, but I think more that were just okay. While I normally enjoy variety in an album, in this case I feel like it was too many things put together that created an album that was too long and not as strong as it could have been if he'd concentrated on one thing. While I didn't dislike any of it, I really couldn't find anything that made it special or worthy of appearing on a list of albums I needed to listen to

Meh, it was fine. A little too much country vibe for my enjoyment and I didn't really find it that interesting.

This was not great. I feel like there are some good concepts here, but often executed poorly.

I probably should’ve went 3 stars on the Bill Evans record.

Ryan Adams & me: a potted history. Stage 1: confusing him with Bryan Adams (this stage lasted quite a while). Stage 2: hearing his cover of Wonderwall and discovering he also had some good tunes of his own. Stage 3: finding out he'd been Me Too-ed and going off him quite a bit. Stage 2 didn't last long enough for me to deep dive into this album before, and Stage 3 has potentially tainted my opinion now, but I reckon I'm judging the music objectively. He's clearly influenced by Dylan & The Band and others, and the paths he treads are all well-trodden... which is fine, but then the songs have to be really strong to justify a high rating, and I don't think they are. There's some good stuff here, but it's mostly in the first third, and there's not enough variation, either within songs or across the album, to keep my interest. I listened to 21 tracks because apparently that's how the album was intended, but I think the label had the right idea in trying to condense it...

Some pretty nice songs. Heard of this guy but never heard any of his music. Might take some more time to appreciate this one better. 2.5/5 for now.

Not interested, don't care, all 21 tracks sounded the same.

I dunno, I am sure the guy is popular with his fans but it just seemed like background noise to me. Not bad, not great, just music in the background.

Not terrible, and almost good. Unfortunately all I heard was boring Tom Petty.

A fine enough blend of county and rock with a touch of folks, played in a way that kind of sounds like a bunch of songs that you've heard a million times on the radio. It's ok, but I wouldn't call it gold.

Pretty bad. Not offensive enough to receive 1 star but not sure why this is on the list.

Boring nonce

I listened for 6 uneventful songs prior to writing this. I will go listen to Sumer of 69 instead.

Eh. Dude is the fucking worst. Maybe that made this one harder to hear. Didn't care for it. Feels like lame ass summer music. Not for me.

How did Ryan Fucking Adams  meet C.C. White ? I had never heard of C.C. White but her vocals on tracks 8 and 15 are so good I searched and found her album "This is Soul Kirtan." She continues to impress. I'd give C.C. White's album a higher rating than R. F. Adams' album. If you're interested in her album, listen to  "Karuna Sagari Ma" and "The Maha Mantra" to start and if you like them, try "Om Namah Shivaya" but, fair warning, OMS gets going as quickly as a Nusrat Khan song does, LOL Oh yeah this is supposed to be a review of an album by R.F. Adams. The more popular songs, "New York New York" and "When the Stars Go Blue" lack impact and, overall, the lyrics on this album don't get me excited.  The playing on some of the less popular songs is enjoyable. For example "Gonna Make You Love Me" and the bonus track "Rosalie Come and Go" are  good little jams.  "Nobody Knows" and "Tina Toledo's Street Walkin' Blues" are also good and are the two songs where C.C. White sings.

Silly me, I got confused and thought the American Ryan Adams was the same person as the Canadian Bryan Adams. In my defense, I think its understandable given the similarities in their names and the generic formulaic rock that they both produce. Someone on this site aptly described Ryan as a smoother Bruce Springsteen and a less intelligent Neil Young. I'm not much for alt-Country Rock but this was a bit better than expected and I liked his less mainstream songs like Sylvia Plath and La Cienega. The rest was mostly forgettable though.

only listened to half, did not like

I thought this was just mediocre.

Utterly mediocre.

This is music for dudes to try to get laid, right? Meh

American country, but not like Nashville pop country at least. Still, doesn't do it for me

Uninteresting, unmemorable, middle-of-the-road soft indie rock. It wasn't actively bad or anything close to it, it was just entirely forgettable. The album is over an hour long and I don't think there was a single moment where I felt an emotion stronger than "okay, sure, I guess".

I am not much a fan of alternative country. It reminds me too much of being on the school bus after school - which I hated.

The definition of meh

Swerved this one unfairly because of length and fairly because of #abuser, then doubled back and gave it a shot because I wouldn't do that to other dix likely to show up here. Also because when Steve Winwood popped up as today's entry this quickly gained appeal. Verdict is that Adams has a defiant charm, but I can't tell whether it's carefully cultivated or just god-given snottiness. The way he lets so many of these drift without trying to grab your ear is certainly a form of defiance, but not one I understand. Why not turn those frills and fills, mannered vocals and guitar atmospherics to something more memorable or witty or challenging. Clue might be in the way he commits to his vocals but stays arm's-length from his lyrics: he doesn't care enough about them to try. A mystery, but not one I'm inclined to solve because the double negative of the genre 'deliberately not unpleasant' makes my brain hurt.

Because you know.

Just seems to belong the genre of MOR American singer songwriters that are pleasant enough but nothing more. The lyrics to "Nothing Girl" don't look so clever in the light of the sexual misconduct charges against him and his subsequent "cancellation".

Uninspiring. Jason and The Scorchers for people who think Jason and The Scorchers are too raucous.

Not my taste

A slog. Some generic pop-rock and I was never really impressed with any of the music or songwriting. It’s background music and that’s about it.

Never really listened and heard lots of good things but this album was very underwhelming. Meh
