Reviews (page 6 of 8)

OK, better than the other Krautrock bands I've had to endure on this list. But...it's still awful. 2/5

I don't know. some parts are great, but some are just noises

It’s a tough listen because the vocals have rough accents. The first song was good, and I can definitely hear the influence on other rock music, but it’s probably not something I’d want to hear again. 7 songs at an hour and fifteen minutes long is just too dense. Ok no - this got so much worse for the last 3 songs. The first of the three was fine, sounded like it’d fit in a videogame but was 17 minutes long. The second was absolute shit, random piano and literal gibberish screaming. I can’t give this a passing grade after that.

Went from lit to not lit very quickly

Whenever I see "German Krautrock," my first thought is...that's redundant. And then my second thought is "ach, nein!" But the last Krautrock album we had I enjoyed so I thought. Gut, let's take it for a spin. I deeply appreciate the experimental effort and disregard for what is considered "music" in the traditional sense, but I don't have to like hearing it.

2.1 // Exactly what you'd expect from an experimental, mostly psychedelic, early 70s album. Wasn't completely unlistenable, but some songs were really bad

Not for me

3.5/10

another one of those albums i’m just not cool enough to like

Oh this is another one that's Art with that capital A. Again, it's not like I didn't like it, exactly, but also it was soooooo looooong and a lot of it was not what I would traditionally call "music". Still better than the Velvet Underground though.

Throw the second disc into the fucking sun and this album is still just meh.

Die ersten Songs sind ganz gut. Aber es wird immer abgefahrener und verrückter. Psychedelic, experimental Rock....

Thanks to No Dogs in Space for familiarizing me with CAN, but they are not for me.

You know, I've come to dread albums with a long running time (this one is 74 minutes), especially if they're 'prog rock classics' like this one is supposed to be. I must have made a mistake when signing up to the list - can I change my mind? This list is very much like the Oscars - never mind the entertainment factor, have a look at the technical artistry on display, see how they make the greatest use of their craft. Look, it's fine, but please don't make me sit through this again...

psychedelic experimental rock, which is cool, but it often goes down the road of being redundant and mostly noise.

This was ok until those long ass bullshit songs towards the end.

I was excited for the direction the album was headed after the first 2 songs. However, ultimately I ended up flabbergasted as to what I had just listened to and just generally confused. I feel like the band had many interesting ideas that they could’ve capitalised off of, but the end product is just a mess. Sound production is surprisingly well crafted. The 60s country rock esq guitar sound and repetitive, uninspiring melodies become old and contribute to an unthrilling experience.

An odd album for sure. Not as bad as some people seem to think on here but definitely not something I would return to.

Not every album needs multiple songs that are over 10 minutes long, and that's perfectly fine.

So far from what i can enjoy

Fun and experimental. Wouldn’t listen to it again tho

This is the musical equivalent of those endless loop videos of spirals at the modern art museum.

I bet this would have gone crazy high asf in the 1970's!! In 2025 while working, it was ok.

This album had its enjoyable moments at the beginning, but man I really wanted "Halleluhwah" to end, and then I really wanted "Aumgn" to end, and then I wanted "Peking O" to end. This album went off the rails and just descended into noise. I don't ever need to hear this again. 3/10

It was ok until it hit the second half of album with multiple 18 minute songs of nothing. This is garbage.

Wow what a ride. Thought it was weird but quite interesting at first and then it all went downhill, specifically on tracks 4, 5, and 6. Honestly if they hadn’t had a vocalist they probably would get a higher rating but he was just spasming out on those tracks and they were waaaaaaay too long.

"arguably one of the most influential rock albums". by who????? was a reasonable amateur garage band until that ridiculous 17 minute track.

“arguably one of the most influential rock albums ever recorded”

Favorite Track: Mushroom

Not for me. First half of the album OK, but the other one...

Quite like the band, not so much this album

Different

2 stars for the 2 songs I liked on this album.

not great

It starts off making you think, wait why do people hate Can? And then it fully becomes Can. Partially like listening to the sounds of House on Haunted Hill and partially just insane jamming. I never really got Can.

Too long. I dont want to listen to an 18 minute jam session. Keep it to yourselves.

The first 3 tracks were very mid and forgettable for me. Track 4 was similar, but also 20 minutes long so a bit tiresome. Tracks 5 and 6 were actively obnoxious. This isn't an album I'll every willingly listen to again. 1.5/5

This was better than Morrissey and it made no sense.

Absolutely terrible. I'm only giving 2/5 because the drummer and percussion honestly is fantastic. But, 35-40% of this album isn't even music.

I'm all set with this one....

the fuck

First part of the double-LP is amazing and super enjoyable to listen to. The second part of the double-LP is terrible and will make your ears bleed to listen to.

Who? What? Won’t…again.

These guys feel like the Radiohead of the early 1970s. The critics seemed to like them, but nobody really listened to them; because, while unique, it's just not very good.

Nothing notable

liked the first half. absolutely hated tracks 5 and 6. not for me.

#626. I usually dont really like jam bands, but for some reason today I also dont like jam bands. 2/5: meh

All the reviews indicate it drops off after the 4th song but it wasn't really doing anything prior to that for me. Too long, too jammy, mediocre to bad singing (though I did get the shades of Radiohead one on song) - and then way too experimental.

Was all prepared to retract my harsh judgement of krautrock after the first half of the album, which I actually enjoyed. But man they really tried to tank the album on the back half. The track “Augmn” was unlistenable.

Very unique. Started out very Velvet Underground meets punk. The got really Avant-garde experimental. Not really bad or good. Odd to be to the point.

Ok for background listening, got a bit weird later in the album

Decent, probably deserves a relisten

Very reminiscent of Houmous & Chutneys crowd splitting 46th studio album ‘An Hour of Random Atmospheric Sounds (With One Great Track In The Middle). 1.8

Heavy going. Too weird for me

I have a hunch that these guys smoked a lot of grass...

please stop no more 30 minute long songs

Coming back to the game after a year+ break...albums like this were why I hit pause in the first place. Next album better be good.

There's so much experimentation here, especially for 1971, that it's a little hard to digest. It's like musical celery. Incredible transition between Paperhouse and Mushroom. The singing in Mushroom is almost deliberately lazy. I like it. The vocalist starts whispering halfway through the track, and I like to think it's because he's out of breath from two minutes of breathy murmurs. The bass is also mixed to be very loud and bounces back-and-forth between the ears. Backward vocals in Oh Yeah are pretty questionable, but I guess back in the day people still weren't quite sure what would catch on. Judging by the original charting positions and modern Spotify listens, it seems that Tago Mago did not (in fact) catch on. It's ballsy to have not one but two tracks that consist of approximately 18 minutes of noodling. The first, Halleluhwah, makes it works. The second, Aumgn, doesn't (consisting primarily of various cavemannish voices grunting the song title at various tempos). Sections of it – most of it, really – were like the bad parts of King Crimson's Moonchild, without the good parts to back it up. Just 18 minutes of relentlessly mindless and goofy noise. Lots of clattering that turns the ear away rather than towards. Peking O is essentially an alternative take of Aumgn with screaming instead of grunting, but the effect is much the same. There are some fun Nintendo-esque electronic noises to keep you company at around the 3-minute mark. And a terrible grating squeak-drone thing at 8 minutes. A full album of the quasi-rock prog stuff on the album's first two sides would've scored much higher for me, but alas. At least the closer, Bring Me Coffee or Tea, is some consolation for the listener's tragic efforts. I get the feeling a lot of reviewers paid attention to the good parts only. There are plenty of good parts here. But if an artist is only good half the time, it gets a middling mark – minus an extra star for the insanity of placing it on a list of the 1,000 most important records of all time. 2/5 Key tracks: Paperhouse, Oh Yeah

Sometimes I have a real issue with this list. It's bad enough that it has every album ever made by a Beatle as well as at least one album by every mid as fuck English band trying to be the Beatles and a few American ones, but it's got multiple albums by "bands" like Can. Is Weezer on the list? No but we got 3 albums by one hit wonder Dexys Midnight Runners. Any Blink 182? No, but we got multiple albums by an "experimental" band that is virtually unlistenable. Any Sevendust? Drowning Pool? Hell, any Selena? No, but we've got so many Byrds albums you'll want to run head first into a wall. By the way, I'm not against these bands having albums on the list. I think the point of the list should be to show the breadth of music. But I TRULY believe every band should only be allowed ONE album. Metallica is my favorite band of all time, but it should be Master of Puppets, the end. Beatles, it should be the white album and nothing more. Maybe, MAYBE, some bands that truly changed their sound can have more than one like Fleetwood Mac or something. But this is insane.

That felt pointless

Not really my vibe but not the worst thing I've listened to :S

i like how i can hear the influences of this album all over current music. but it's a bit much at times (cough Aumgn)

Moments of good, moments of shit. Such is the life of an “experimental, trail-blazing album”. All I can really do is break this project up into moments, as its format & songs evolve in such abnormal ways. Good moments: - the first minute or so of “Oh Yeah” with those reversed vocals - the first half of “Aumgn” is incredible. Eerie and atmospheric, love the guttural chamber vocals at the 7+ minute mark. Like something out of Dune! - the beachy, wavy drum machine pattern 3 minutes into “Peking O” The bad: - most of the first half of the album just feels like it’s figuring itself out and going nowhere in doing so - the second half of “Peking O”. Eminem is shaking in his boots! The rambling nonsense took me out of the listening experience a bit. - even for an intense, attentive headphone listener, it’s hard to grab on to many sonic ideas. Kinda like a really strange, hazy dream that you don’t remember Somewhere between 2 to 3 stars

no thank you

Experimental folk rock, speaks for itself

Not my cup of tea.

Ridiculously lengthed songs

Some of these experimental albums aren't bad, the first few songs are pretty good on this one, but I don't understand why all of these experimental albums are must listen to.

Man, this one was all over the fucking place, what a weird journey. At first I was kind of bemused, not-really into it, but fine. A bit too disjointed and artsy for me, but better than I thought it was going to be. Then some of the tracks I was kind of on-board with. Despite it being over 18 minutes I was down with that first jam track… but then it’s followed by an equally long one that’s shit, and yet ANOTHER really long one that’s mostly mad, raving gibberish. And then we’re back to a track that actually has some kind of musical basis, where even if you’re not into it, it’s still interesting, with layered instruments and great drums. So… up and down? But mostly bad. I’m glad people can enjoy this, but jeeez man.

Some things I really liked but in the end too experimental for me

Most influential bands sew the seed of an idea in their music which subsequent artists water and nurture, eventually maturing into fully-grown new genres. Can seem like the kind of influential band who sewed the seeds of several ideas at once and immediately plied them with whatever chemicals they could get their hands on, resulting in an overgrown tangle of strange new crops. It was left to future generations to hack through the thicket, find the good stuff and generally make the plants (songs) shorter and more pleasing on the eye (ear).

weird ah hell

Definitely not my cup of tea. I should be better about figuring out what I can like about this sort of music instead of trying to put into words what I don’t like about it. But I just don’t like it enough to do that. Anyway, it’s always good to expand horizons even if it kinda sucks at the time. I’m sure I’ll tuck this away somewhere and it will add context to something else or at least come in handy at trivia. Aumgn is the most interesting one on the album so far.

It was great until it wasn't. 2/5

Meh. Kind of a wandering disjointed mess.

Extremely rambly, atmospheric, sometimes dissonant rock

A little too weird for me

Don't go past track three. You have been warned.

Well, it started off fine and devolved into madness. The longer tracks were just pure experimentalism and not enjoyable. I can see doing that for yourselves as artists, but to actually put it on an album and expect people to eat it up is just wishful thinking.

Thus was mostly just noise to me.

Never heard of this. Starts out as ok experimental funk rock with unintelligible lyrics, then goes into spooky Halloween sounds, and just gets weirder and weirder. Supposedly there are English lyrics here, but I could barely understand a word. I didn't like it. Favorite track: I don't know. Probably one of the first three.

2+ Stars (6/15)

Part genius, part batshit crazy. The first half was more interesting than the second half. Gonna have to re-listen to their Future Days album to see how it compares. 2.5

The overriding sense of this is that it's very, very, very long and weird. I was quite into it for a short while, but really, you've got to stop a lot sooner than they do. Having said that, there's some cracking guitar work throughout, and it's never boring.

Y'know, I gotta wonder if my brain is just wired differently, 'coz I did not have the reaction to this that I was expecting to. Now, to be clear, the reaction I was expecting to have was... Well, there's a review of this album on this website that calls it "hoe scaring music," right? Simply put, I was expecting to be one scared hoe. After all: 74 minutes of experimental avant-funk 70's Krautrock? How would I be able to survive? And being a day or so late with my review, I was able to build it more and more in my mind as an absolute slog to get through. A big ol' case of "Gawd, let's just get this shit over with..." So on the one hand, it might be my fault for over-inflating my expectations. Or maybe it's not; my brain has a tendency to over-worry and blow things out of proportion sometimes... Or maybe I just didn't engage with it right, and I let way too much of it just float on by me? Like... OK, let me discuss the two discs one at a time so you can get what I mean. On the first disc is where we find all of the funk stuff and, like... Oh, gawd, it's all so "Who the hell cares?" Even if I didn't come into this album expecting a cream pie of weirdness to the face, I still wouldn't have been all too impressed by what I heard here. Like... Sure. It's funk. I guess it was improvised, maybe? And, sure, there's a violin playing out of key in one part, but other than that? I could hardly be assed to pay much attention — so if I **did** miss something, I guess you can blame the material for not holding my interest well enough in the first place. Or I'm just dumb for expecting too much weirdness off the bat, I'unno. Then we get to the second disc, where **finally** all of the experimental stuff comes out to play, and... I mean, look, this is all clearly way more interesting than the first disc. All the places it goes to, versus the endless loop of "whatever" funk... If there's any side of this record to hear, it's this side. You could definitely "Fantasia" to this and let the music conjure some wild imagery in your mind, like I did with BITCHES BREW. At the same time, however, lordy me, was I ever unimpressed. It's why I ask if my brain is just wired differently. I mean, whenever I come across highly experimental, avant garde "big brain smart" tracks like this, my immediate assumption is always that it's gonna be an unbearable slog, but then it just, like... Never is? "Revolution 9" has honestly never bothered me, and I remember listening to "Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet" a few weeks ago and not really getting much out of it except mild annoyance in its last minute. Y'know, if this is "hoe scaring music," consider me not even a hoe to begin with. Don't get me wrong, there are interesting parts in there. There's some drum stuff about fifteen minutes into "Augmn" that I dug, and there's moments early on in "Peking O" I could nod to like, "Yeah, this is something." But then it seemed like most of "Peking O" was dedicated to someone slapping their hand on a keyboard and burbling while rapidly speaking gibberish. Like, is this really one of the "best albums ever, period?" This? This nonsense? I don't wanna go all "My kid could do that," but if this don't stand as the audio example of how I just can't see what the big deal is supposed to be here. And I wanna emphasize the crazy thing: whether I just don't get it or I let too much of it float past me, **I AM FOR THIS**. Unlike most every other negative review that just calls this thing unlistenable noise, I was all ready, despite my prehensions, to ride this roller coaster and see where it took me. But... Y'know, food metaphor. Largely thanks to my autism, I'm a picky eater. Whenever I'm presented with new food that looks or smells strange, I always psych myself out over how it's gonna be awful and I'm gonna hate it. But then, when I do take a bite of the damn chip or broccoli or whatever, it just... Tastes wholy inoffensive. It's something I **could** eat again, but, like, why in the hell would I when it doesn't do anything for me? Y'know? Honestly, I wanted to like this album. I wanted to hear this exciting, thrilling experimental album that just blew my mind. I wanted to buck against my kneejerk reaction that this was "Ooo, so serious and important and adult" Bran Flakes next to something like Britney Spears's "**DUMB AND FOR BABIES**" Fruit Loops. (Yes, I almost made **TWO REVIEWS** about those reviews — dodged a bullet, eh?) At the very least, I wanted to justify giving this thing a 3 off of "Hey, at least side two is **doing things**." But given everything I just wrote, and thinking back on what parts stick out in my mind... No, no, I'm sorry — I gotta go with a 2. Like, it's so weird to be on the "I think it's boring" side of a 2 and not the "I think it's not fun to listen to" 2, but here we are. In the end, all I can hope for is that, if there are other CAN albums on here, they can do more for me than this one did. Jus', I'unno. "CAN?" More like "CAN do without, thank you."

First listen.

can appreciate how influential it is for prog rock and psychedelic rock but it's not for me some songs are good

Started off fine. Ended bad weird. Low 2. Kinda made my day worse.

Giving Rush a run for their money both in song length and in personal enjoyment of said songs.

I got half way through and couldn't do it anymore.

I can appreciate long form experimental music to a degree, like the next guy, but I have my limits and can stand only so much. Side one, I enjoyed and even the longest track (all of side two), Hallelluhwah was good background music, but it began to try my patience about half-way through the next track, Aumgn which clocked in at a modest 17+ minutes. From there it went off the rails and I admit was a difficult listen, but I stuck it out and got "treated" to extended live tracks on the version I listened to...ugh! Can is one of those "acquired tastes" bands that can be a rewarding listening experience when you're in the proper mood and state of mind. Clearly, I didn't take enough mind altering drugs to enjoy this to the max, maybe next time.

The unlistenable tracks got to me. Won’t revisit

Sometimes experiments don't work that good.

i didnt mind some of it, but no song ever needs to be 18 minutes long

You know, it was fine. It wasn’t great. It was pretty bad in parts. I didn’t like it. But if I was super-ass high in a sunlit San Francisco apartment in the summer of ‘71, I would dig on this and then fall asleep. So.

I have mixed feelings on this one. Some of it was pretty good, some of it wasn't. There were definitely some trippy parts, and other parts were way too "jam band"-like for my personal taste.

Loved the experimentation on this but after the last few songs it went downhill. 2.5/5

Not my cup of tea. I can appreciate the "differentness" but no thanks.

70s ambience? no entenc que sigui del 71 està desafinant expressament •_• ala mira una bomba wtf bro where is paul mccartney bé definitivament: eeee prou.

Some interesting ideas that never seem to go anywhere; which makes it, ultimately, just a waste of a fairly decent drummer.

I’m not really into jam bands, but the musicians are clearly talented. The more experimental tracks seem a little aimless and long winded.

I really have quite a hard time getting into Can. They have made a few good songs ('She Brings The Rain', 'Vitamin C'), but sadly, none of those have been found on the records on this list so far. After listening to Can more, I also realize that they aren't very typical Can songs. There are many songs on this record that has something to it, but only temporarily. 'Mushroom' for example, is decent at times, but derails at the end of the song. 'Halleluhwah' has a nice main riff to it, but is just way too long and becomes repetitive after some time. Then you have 'Aumgn' and 'Peking O' that are... I don't know what. The black sheep of this album, perhaps? Complete garabage. I'll give this a weak 2. It is bordering on complete trash, but there are some rays of light that saves it. But just barely.

Not much to say on this one, it just passed me by. The only times I noticed it was during some of the noisy chaotic segments.

Started out pretty cool. Could’ve been current 30-40 years after its release date. Then they got real fuckin weird with it. I decidedly do not like nearly 20 minute songs with assorted irritating sounds.

Bruv I did not need 20 minutes of factory funny moments followed by coked up cavemen Parts of this I really enjoyed, like Paperhouse and Halleluhwah were great, and if they hadn't decided to lose their brain cells halfway through this would have been a great album

Decent start, but really fell off into random noise at the end.

01) Paperhouse - 7,0 02) Mushroom - 7,5 03) Oh Yeah - 7,0 04) Halleluhwah - 7,0 05) Aumgn - 1,0 06) Peking O - 1,0 07) Bring Me Coffee or Tea - 5,0 TOTAL: 5,07 (51/100) Current ranking: 353/379

Just because you can think of the experiment, doesn’t mean it’ll necessarily sound good in practice. The ideas throughout Tago Mago probably sounded groundbreaking and inventive in theory, and they *were*, technically speaking, but as music, this is incredibly tedious and borderline unlistenable. Side A is maybe the most traditional, composed of actual songs. After that, it is the idea of music, progressively unraveling to become less and less sonically appealing as it goes. It’s not that Can makes harsh noise – they’re very much a psych rock band (derogatory) – but the majority of this is not something I would call composed in any sense, and that’s for the absolute worst. Can are good enough musicians to execute these ideas well, though, and if you meet them on their own terms, I can imagine someone who has more affinity for psych rock respecting this. But any honest praise feels more like music critic intellectual posturing than actual enjoyment. I’ve heard worse music trying to have actual mass appeal, sure, but I’ve also heard better experimentation in harsh noise. Tago Mago may accomplish its boundary-pushing goals, but it was a chore and a goddamn half for me to listen to, and I will never revisit it again.

Well this was one of those albums where the vive couldnt have been further away from when i listened to it. I was very hungover and tired, flying solo through an airport. It gave me anxiety and thats more my fault than its. If it caught me at the right time then this could be interesting, but not today.

Seventies trippy jam music. I think it’s probably better under the influence

I can certainly appreciate the musicianship of this album, but I am beyond my sparkup days to really dig it.

Not as bad as their other album on the list isn't a good benchmark

Sounds like a garage band from a developing nation. Not awful. Wait…Can? As in, they’re playing with cans? Ok then… street performers in a developed nation. Not particularly good, but at least they’re enjoying themselves. How can you not when you’re beating on cans.

Hard to keep pay attention to it to be honest - it doesn't sound horrible but it's a bit purposeful awkward

Can not

Honestly I like can but didn’t love this, maybe cuz I listened after tubular bells which is similar but way better

It was really going really well and then I guess the drugs hit the bands and it all became just cringe.

An interesting mix of psychedelic and pop rock at the start and then gets forgettable in the second half.

Degenerates into a puddles of shit, no thank you.

Started off well then went to crazy town. 2.5

This album lulls you into a false sense of security with some solid music, and then suddenly Frank Zappa comes out of nowhere to barrage you with like 35 minutes of feeling like you're losing your mind.

Cruising into 1001. Strong, cool start that I was feeling. Deteriorated hard. When you are adding dog noises to songs, it's time to stop.

Pretty good first half, gets a little too weird and abstract in the second half

It seemed like maybe it was going to be something I could vibe with, but then it never really turned over into 2nd gear.

Ok, first half is pretty cool but then someone somewhere channeled some really weird animal energy

Was about to give this at least a 4 but then the second half happened.

Jam band, super jammy. Meh

Meandering psychedelic early 70’s jam band folk indie rock.

Stop yelling at me please

i'm sure this influenced someone. it only influenced me to turn it off. actually, no, the first half of the album was okay - kind of vibey and not unpleasant to listen to, though nothing i'd seek out on my own. but by the time we got to the back half when the songs were longer than a sitcom episode and tonally directionless, i started to get mad. why is this on here?

come on robert there are better albums out there. what is this. I've already done my time and listened to future days for you. the only things i enjoyed about this 73-minute avant-garde experimental slog was a few brief moments in halleluhwah and of course, the crazy cacophony and screaming gibberish in peking o. that was honestly the only moment i was actually awake and paying attention while listening to this. favorites: halleluhwah

A little too experimental and psychedelic for me, first few songs were sweet then the acid trio starts.

+1 for Halleluhwah

Ok, spanish

This ain't it. Half of it is just sounds.

Det starter okay ud men tabte mig helt undervejs.

Listened Before? N Man, this is some weird shit. It's creative, but weird and long and I just don't care enough to waste a bunch of time analyzing it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Mushroom (because it's "short")

1.5/5. This was tough to get through. Not only was it long, but the later songs were just bad. That middle song really killed it for me.

Weirder than Al, this album was a tough slog. Aumgn seems like the inspiration for Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Goin’ Down (see the 11:30 mark). Experimental, strange.

Experimental mumbling

Initially I was enjoying it and then it just got weirder and weirder

Tracks 1-4 were in solid 3/3.5 territory, which is an accomplishment since I usually hate things as long as Halleluhwah on principal alone. Then we got to Aumgn. I successfully powered through, but then there was Peking O. Bring Me Coffee or Tea wasn't bad but I can't decide if I actually liked it because I was still fighting off the prior two tracks. Too avant-garde for me.

Really not the vibe. It was fine in the background for a while but then became a bit unpleasant. Would not recommend.

Didn't get it. No re-listen.

I can see the appeal and why it was influential. But after the first two songs I couldn't really listen to it anymore.

Let's go in a studio and just bang on stuff. No thanks.

I'm sure this is an important cultural item, but there's nothing here for me.

Too weird for me

So this is krautrock. I hear synthesized music and to be honest a psychedelic style that I’m not accustomed to.

I am sure these cats led the way on making weird sounds with rock instruments.

Better than expected, except “Aumgn” and “Peking O” which sucked

At what point does a song become a jam session....somewhere prior to the 18th minute mark of Halleluhwah. When is a song considered an experiment of sound...rather than a song....because that's how I'd classify Aumgn. I did enjoy hearing the "Aumgn" lyric though.

Like this one krautrock is something I don't know much about. Has a Doors ish vibe to it. Some very long tracks which makes it a commitment to listen to in one shot. Stand out tracks: - Mushroom - Helleluhwah - 18 Min epic - Aumgn - 17 mins - Bring me coffee or tea

Wish I hadn't read their soaring self appraisal of how amazing this was, it was just uncomfortable ambient

Sen ba, "FUCK YOU FOR TRUSTING US!"

Ya I just don't really care for this sound.

Man I’m sorry but I just don’t have the patience to listen to an 18 minute long song. I mean it’s have to be the greatest sound my ears have ever heard. This was not that sound.

Obviously influential at the time

Some good stuff on here, but the more extreme advant-garde experimental stuff got a little to far out for me and brought the over all rating down.

Confusing mixture of Sounds apparently attempting to create Psychedelic Rock.

2.0 Started off strong, but it definitely lost me in the middle. I find it interesting when an artist or whoever, records an album like this, and is like "this is what I want to share with the world, I think people will really like it".

I own this one, but not one I play often and not for years

Gave my thoughts in Discord, but basically it was too long, too experimental, and just not good.

donnie thornberry on peking O what a treat

2 I spoiled my dad’s score on this one for myself before I listened and then found myself thinking, “Damn, only a 1? It’s not amazing, but it’s decent psychedelic jam stuff.” Hell, I even found myself in a bit of a groove during Halleluhwah despite its 18-minute runtime. But holy cow, does this album change on a dime into some of the most unlistenable, experimental garbage I’ve heard yet. What, were they afraid of listeners enjoying themselves too much? Who the hell wants to hear piercing strings and screams for 17+ minutes? I don’t know if this is supposed to be some kind of artistic statement or expression or something, but man, does it just about ruin the entire experience. It’s not quite Frankie Teardrop level, but it’s damn close - if your album requires me to scramble for my phone volume so my neighbors don’t think a murder is happening, it’s not a good album. Anyway, I see why my dad gave this a 1. Personally, I still find the first half of this thing listenable enough to keep my final rating out of the 1 territory, but talk about souring a listen. Maybe I just need to have the worst psychedelic trip of my life to understand this, but… I’d rather not.

Just madness and not much thought

Sometimes enjoyable weirdness, but I don’t want to listen to it again.

Hmmm… interesting moments here and there, but in general to weird for my taste.

Usually love more experimental stuff but I don't think I was in the right mood for this. Will need another listen.

The second half of the album is the definition of a challenging listen. The first half, would give a 3. Nothing spectacular but I did enjoy parts of Oh Yeah, and I wouldn't say it was dull. The second half was anti-music, a wall of crashing, indeterminate noise, and not one I'd like to hear again ever. Strange stuff this.

Listened to this more times than I would’ve liked to, because I always end up tuning it out. Not bad for work, but doesn’t sound great. Low 2.

3/10 would be lower but Peking O is a masterpiece

Some great jams and rifts. Got dragged out at the end

Best Song: Paperhouse. In particular, the solo at the end was great. Worst Song: Peking O. This is the prime answer to the question: "Can you go too prog?" Overall: What is it about these 60s and 70s musicians who clearly show aptitude with their instruments and then produce these bloated, meandering albums in which they seem to do everything in their power to NOT play said instruments? Like sadly too much prog, this is more often annoying than it is interesting.

Unusual album reminding me of at the Drive in if they were from the 70s

Super weird experimental rock. I probably would have loved it if I was a music-appreciating age in 1971. Today it's just okay.

First half of the album is pretty good: funky psychedelic rock. Back half of the album falls off hard into deeply experimental noise. Peking O is particularly annoying. Not for me.

Experimental, noisy art-rock. Halleluhwah's relentless rhythm is engaging as it is soothing, but the other tracks range from forgettable to annoying. 2/5

Did not care for at all. Hollow and simple.

I was unfamiliar with the term Krautrock, which is the genre for this album. I'm aware of Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk (among others), but don't really know their music. After this album, I don't think I'll seek out more. Parts of it reminded me of early Pink Floyd, but not enough to make it really interesting for me.

Songwriting tends to be the most interesting thing to me in music so extended jams/soundscapes/jazz sessions tend to be a little tricky for me. It's not that I don't think I could learn to love or appreciate most of this album with more listens but two wasnt quite enough. I preferred the first 2 sides to the last and it is my first exposure to KRAUTROCK!

Very experimental and psychedelic. Nothing to just listen to normally (and sober)

Ok the first song totally fucks, psychedelic and awesome. crazy things are happening towards the end of this album -- im understanding the 17 mins of weird sounds complaints -- very experimental! AHHH its getting spooky scary, this sounds like the music we'd play in the car when we picked up freshman for hazing lol. ok the end of the album is ouchie and crazy but the beginning was really cool!!! yo this guy is going fucking crazy im actually laughing

Couldn't get into it

GEschichtlich interessant. Lange kann ich das nicht hören.

Don’t you feel like the Germans are working out their national trauma in their music sometimes? Second German experimental album where we get screaming assaults in German over 250bpm machine-gunfire-speed drums (on the B-side in “Peking O”). Mercifully, it’s one track, and relegated to the mostly unlistenable second half. Man, the early 70’s really were a fertile time for music, huh? So many “firsts.” I’m hearing strong shades of ideas that later Radiohead would perfect around Kid A. Did I say that for the last krautrock album we had? Mixed with this super bluesy, driven but meandering series of jams. Some of these grooves would be at home on a Chemical Brothers record! I almost got out my hacker keyboard. And this is 70s! I think it’s great, but… that was a pretty miserable second half. Almost unbearable. If you forget about tracks 5 and 6, it’s stellar, but I’m sadly just a tad turned off enough by that back half that it’s hard to recommend. A tortured 2/5 – was close to a 3, really close! But Peking O pulled me off the edge.

Krautrock. Rallante.

Experimental, sonidos raros.

It's a difficult album - experimental prog and I'm aware of Holger Czukay's work from David Sylvian albums. I guess avant-garde is a thing for some and it has influenced some great musicians. Unfortunately in some instances (Radiohead). But ultimately it isn't an album I'd listen to with any enthusiasm.

Rating: 5/10 The first album that is truly love/hate. The first half of this album was great, it had a lot of experimental and creative ideas while still being musical, even though it felt a bit meandering. The second half is where the experimentation became at times totally unlistenable, it seemed like they were trying to be weird just to be weird. Despite this, this album is very unique and one of the strangest albums I have ever heard, so I respect it for that reason alone even though I at times hated it musically. Favorite songs: Paperhouse, Halleluhwah. Worst songs: Aumgn, Peking O.

weird, hypno, psychedelica noodling that overstays its welcome.

I've never heard of this band or album before, and its certainly interesting. The first few tracks are pretty good, but nothing will prepare you for the last half of the album, which is basically what happens if you go full retard with experimental music. I like experimental, but this is just too much. 2/5

Very odd album, like the soundtrack for a psychological horror movie

Fuck this album. I was feeling it until Aumgn and Peking O came on and ruined everything. 29 minutes of pure fucking garbage. Why did they have to destroy a beautiful thing.

Hallelujah is a jam

Went from cool to full on avant garde garbage

It had something to it but wasn't incredible

Holy shit! I made this same record in 1994 when I was 13 on my Yamaha MT4X 4-track recorder! I think I still have the cassette in my moms basement! Yes I realize that technology has changed and all but this is a waste of everyone's time. Sometimes influential isn't good. This is one of those times.

I really don't understand why this is on this list. Mostly unlistenable.

Interesting funk tone to it. I'm still not sure if they were singing in English or not. It was interesting background music, but hard to get into.

Never heard of Can. Not a fan.

Definitely something new. Not the greatest

This album had me on board until a bit over the half hour mark when I hit Aumgn and Peking O. Aumgn was pretty much just a collection of sounds and lacked any structure long enough to hold my interest. Peking O was way too experimental and avant-garde, pretty much unlistenable. These two songs alone take up more than 29 minutes of the album! My song ratings on this one range from 1 to 5 stars so the average should be a 3 but the two songs noted above seriously drag this album down so I can't give it more than a 2. Normally I wouldn't ever listen to a 2-star album again but I wouldn't mind revisiting the first half of the album.

C Paperhouse 3 Mushroom 4 Oh Yeah 3 Halleluhwah 3 Aumgn 1 Peking O 1 Bring Me Coffee or Tea 3 After taking a peak in r/vinyl this week, I learned that anyone who doesn't have Can in their collection is either a moron or uncultured. Coincidentally, I got Tago Mago on the generator a few days later and was able to put them to the test. Final conclusion: vinyl snobs are some of the internet's worst personalities. That has nothing to do with Can though.

This was too much for me at times.

I just couldn't even get myself to focus on this music. Sometimes I noticed an interesting sound, most of the time my brain just tuned out.

I just Can't get into this band. The yelly singing drives me nuts.

Aumgn is like a bad trip and so is Peking O, but at least that one has a part that is listenable. The rest of the album is alright.

This album started out funky and fresh, but ended in the gnashing of teeth. I will seek out more CAN.

17 minute songs are cool and all but not when they suck

Am I wrong to have thought that there's an electronic band also named Can? Or is that this same band and they just hadn't got to that point yet when this record came out? Either way, I was expecting keyboards and banging on kitchen appliances and instead I got what struck my ears as a psychedelic jam band. (Redundant?) I'd have to listen to this one again to give it a fair shake, but I didn't hate it on the surface.

Pretty unremarkable. I wouldn't be mad about it being on or anything but I wouldn't really notice either. 2.5

This was an experience... so side one (as the kids say) was very very good, a tad pretentious but I dug it. The side 2 started and after 15 mins of the 17 min track I honestly thought the umbongo theme was about to start playing, then an 11 min track happens where a man wails down the mic for the majority of it and because of how terrible side 2 was it loses 2 stars

If I was only rating the first album, I'd go with a 3...maybe even a 4. It's dated, but has some good grooves. I liked Paperhouse and Halleluhwah a lot. Mushroom sounded like they were on shrooms, but wasn't terrible. Oh Yeah sounded like the shrooms were kicking in, but had a decent groove. But then the second album...absolute pure complete crap. Here are my notes: Aumgn: More shrooms...definitely out there and too long. Somewhat disturbing. Peking O - Pure crap...about halfway in is horrendous. And so on. What a shame. I'd like to give it a 3 as an average, but the second album is so bad I can't go that high. 2 it is.

First songs were sort of a vibe but the last half was sounding more and more like an occult ritual or something.

Some bangers, but also a lot of psychedelic noise jamming.

At times it felt like the songs would never end, and not in a pleasant way. Some good ideas are buried in the mire though.

I enjoyed the first few tracks but it eventually descended into a cacophony which I wasn’t enjoying. I wouldn’t seek it out again so I’m going to be harsh, 2*

I must admit that I was quite busy so didn't get a huge amount of time to listen. It was OK -- a bit repetitive but inoffensive background noise.

The first three tracks were not really my jam, but they were tolerable. Then came the rest of the album…Nope and nope.

2/5. I definitely understand how unquiet this album is with it's extended experimental music, and trust me I love progressive rock, but this isn't it. It's not terrible but is hard to listen to sometimes. I would need to be in a specific mood and don't think I got that in me for a bit. It's a 2 because I don't hate it, just not going to sit and listen to it all the way through.

Some groove, some jams way too zonked out for anyone to enjoy straight

There's some fun stuff here but also some weird ass stuff. Aumgn could be a horror movie score.

Kind of a weird experience. This was not very good and ultimately pointless but there were a couple of songs that I didn't mind having on when I wasn't paying too much attention. Seemed like a few relatively talented musicians formed a jam band and then just wanted to see how strange they could get.

The first half of the album was pretty decent even with an 18 and a half minute song, but for that to then be followed by 17 and a half minutes of moaning was rough. Just a strange listen, every time Krautrock starts to pull me in it somehow immediately flips on itself and loses me again.

Krautrock. Rallante. Un 2.

Wowzer. I didn't like it. And then I really didn't like it. 1.5 rounding up for the boldness of the attempt. Fair enough having it on this list.

I Can appreciate bits of what's hear, you Can certainly hear it's influence. But I'd be happy if I Can live the rest of my life without this album darkening my door again.

The first few songs were pretty good, but it all got a bit abstract towards the end.

Was pretty average, some songs went on for too long

Couldn’t really get into it. I didn’t feel any sort of narrative was being told, no distinguishable parts. It was intriguing at times but it was no more than background music for me

None for me, thanks.

WTF am I listening to.

Terrible production, no high point, no songwriting, this was a tough listen.

Ugh the weird noises on Aumgn were not for me. The album started out ok but went off the rails

i was quite enjoying this but by the end i was forced to concede that it's bollocks

For the most part it was a nice example of the genre with it's own quirks which keep it interesting with Aumg and a few other parts it carries it into a bad acid trip in the making, it does well with its inspiration of Aleister Crowley and the occult. I saved a few tracks into a playlist others I'll relive in my nightmares and discuss with my therapist in years to come.

This album started out good, but just got kind of strange. Seems like more of a thought experiment than a coherent album.

Man, what a weird album. It's funny how it's 70 some minutes long, but it's only got 7 songs on it. I got tired of it pretty quickly, and those very long songs really cemented this as a 2 star for me. I'm just glad it's over with. My favourite song was Mushroom.

Experimental, I get it. But theres a 17 minute “song” that sounds like yawning for most of it. 2.5 rating only for the experimental sound

Some cool stuff I guess but most of the back half is painful. Props for them for doing something like this in 1971 but not for me

So jazzy. Great musicianship but I couldn’t sit through this one.

Wasn't listening

forgettable but ok

Cool, but not really for me. I love prog-rock, but this album feels like it doesn't go anywhere; it doesn't tell a story or even induces an emotional connection. Im sure it does for some, or maybe I need to try it again on a different day, but I wouldn't say I like it.

What the heck has Aumgn? And Peking O? I can't.

Got a bit lost in this one TBH, couldn't get a feel for where they were trying to takee

To be honest very hard to listen album.... The concept is nice and sonorities are mostly enjoyable (not all however...) You catch yourselfmov8ng your head from time to time and sometime surprised by weird noises that sound good.... But the length of the album and some bad moments of the album really take you out if you listen to the album as a whole.... Decent but not it. Small 2.5/5

Pas trop fan du rock choucroute

2.5?? What did that turn into

Basically the definition of the "is we play it weird, it will be good!" mentality. It's just not good. Thankfully, there are enough good moments to salvage a 2.

Sorta more art noise with a guitar minimal, percussion bent. I thought it had enough attitude to be Japanese, if that means anything.

p235. 1971. 2 stars. 70's German prog-rock/jazz wankage with Japanese vocals. Let's not forget that previous collaborations between Germany and Japan have not ended well. Alarm bells went off as soon as I looked at the track times... 7:28, 7:23, 18:32, 17:37, 11:37, 6:27. FFS. Early fears confirmed, lots of pointless noodling and dodgy vocals. Outstays its welcome after 5 mins. Shame as the bass and drums are really tight - all sorts of future influences for 90's club and dance. Never trust a double album made by German hippies.

First impression: "Interesting". Alas, the album is marred by a latter half that's best described as a bad acid trip.

Only one song saved

Too experimental and a lot of unpleasant noise. 1.5/5

Uhh... I liked parts of it? Then it got fucking weird. I can enjoy weird but sometimes it goes in the direction of just fucking with you and I couldn't really stand that. It's certainly an experiment to say the least. I'm happy to have listened to it since I never would have but I don't think I'll be visiting this again.

Mostly too long, but has some good moments.

Songs are too long, vocals too quiet, but okay as background.

Hmm, eh. I want to like experimental music but this album just didn't catch my attention much at all. Vocals were much in the background, music felt very disorganized which I get was their aim, but I didn't find many interesting phrases throughout

This was trippy

No no no - way too busy and chaotic for me!! So stressful puts me in a bad mood. I can see that other people with "normal" brains could love this. It is cool but it just stresses me out so much I can't even figure out which elements I like etc.

A little too weird for my taste.

Rock experimental. Demasiado largo y pesado.

Im dalej tym gorzej się robi

Oh boy more 70s psychedelic woo hoo. This one didn’t do it for me and I can’t even be bothered to fully listen to it right now as I play elden ring

Not my thing.

Interesting blend of rock and out there ambient expiramentation. Cool as a museum piece. Aumgn is a deep trip down the rabbit hole. Peking-O is a bundle of trash falling on a crazy cat lady.
