Reviews (page 3 of 7)
This isn't bad. But it's not for me. The genre of rave music isn't really my thing and while I don't dislike this, it's not an album I'm keen to listen to again.
Really mixed quality album that makes it difficult to enjoy
I’ve actually enjoyed most of the electronic albums I’ve hit on this list so far, but this one felt kind of plain. It never really hit that spark that makes electronic music exciting. Part of the record sounded like it was reaching toward Krautrock, but it never fully committed to that direction. The rest just played out like run-of-the-mill early 90s techno, the kind of stuff you’d expect to hear in the background at a rave but not something you’d go back to on its own. It’s not terrible, and there are moments that almost click, but overall En-Tact didn’t leave much of an impression. Decent enough for what it is, but nothing I’d be eager to revisit.
Послушать приятно, но стиль довольно далёк от меня.
Sick music to just have in the background while you work on stuff. Great for getting lost during repetitive tasks. I like it, though I don’t feel terribly strongly about it.
Better than I thought

If you ever wondered about rave culture this is a great starting point
This was fine. It didn't really jump out, in comparison to others in this genre.
Its dance music, but I kind of liked it
Good variety of dancy tracks with a psychedelic feel. Clearly genre-straddling, and an especially unique pairing. Apparently in interviews, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons (The Chemical Brothers) often namecheck early acid house and rave pioneers (The Shamen, 808 State, The Orb) as part of the environment they absorbed when they started DJing. Bumping up to three stars for being influential.
Pretty neat psychedelic club electronica. I could listen to this.
New band for me. Surprisingly good arrangements and vocals.
Raro. Me gustó que aunque es un disco de electrónica, no parece que estoy escuchando la misma canción eterna 15 veces seguidas. Tiene dos o tres tracks que me prendieron bastante, así que en promedio, pasa. Pero no creo volver a los Shamen.
tremendo
It was pretty much to same song on repeat. 5/10
Some songs are bangers but overall I felt it quite repetitive
This is a few years before the smash that was Ebenezer Goode and after the really good album 'In Gorbachev We Trust' This is actually a really good 1990s dance album.
Helt ok.
I don’t know how to rank this. It’s definitely not the worst I’ve heard and very far from the best. I thought I liked “Move Any Mountain”, but I didn’t like it so much this time, besides the chorus. As a whole, it’s long AF. As a whole, it wouldn’t really bother me being on low in the background, unlike some of my 2 & 1 ratings. I’m torn. So 2.5, rounds up to 3. Mehhhhh

fun!
Fun techno-y dance music from someone I never heard of.
Okay...I'll listen to again, but it's not my new fave album.
90s electro sound. Is okay to run in the background, but nothing crazy in my opinion
Honestly didn't have time to listen to this one completely. I don't like electronic music. At times this record was decent, it started out kinda ass. Repetitive and noisy, but electronic dance music generally isn't for me so that might be it. Just gonna rate this as mid to be fair
6/10
Hieman vanhentuneelta kuulostavaa elektroa. Ei huonokaan! 3/5
pretty cool
When I saw this was an hour and six minute electronica album, a bit of dread came over me. It was not alleviated by reading the numerous 1 and 2 star reviews. So maybe going in with so low of expectations helped, but I did not dislike this as much as I feared I would. I didn't super love it or anything, but it was enjoyable enough of a listen. No where near the worst this lost has offered so far.
I kind of wondered if I'd heard of (or heard) The Shamen before, and then realized I had with their massive hit (and opening track of the US 1991 release) "Move any mountain", which I enjoyed as much today as I did back when it was ubuiquitous (and in case that sounds ambiguous, I actually *did* enjoy it). It was also fun to see the video for this now-venerable song; I wonder if the Red Hot Chili Peppers were inspired by this video for their slightly later "Breaking the girl"? Unfortunately, the remainder struggles under the weight of their huge single that sounds quite different from much of the rest of the album. (And curious that "Move any mountain" didn't really appear on their UK release, except as the earlier "Progen (Land of Oz)" track, although it sounds like the "Move any mountain" version was the result of touring with Orbital.) Despite a number of interesting remix artists contributing to various tracks, little else stood out, although I enjoyed "Possible worlds", "Make it mine" (although the UK "v2.5 Evil Ed" remix seems better than the US "v1.3 Lenny D Vox" version), and maybe "Hyperreal Orbit". Too bad they couldn't have figured out a way to mix (literally) their earlier psychedelic rock with this album's excessively repetitive rave/acid-house tendencies. And a bit confusing to try to figure out which tracks to listen to, as I got the US 1991 issue on YouTube Music, which has a number of extra tracks as well as different mixes from the UK vinyl (as well as the UK CD/cassette, but in different ways).
NRG!!!! This was very fun and dancey, I liked the world music influences in there. Really transported me to the clubs of the 90s.
first listen eh
It's tough for 90s dance music albums in this thing. I don't think they were ever meant to be listened to with the chin stroking intensity invited by most of the other inclusions. You were meant to dance to them or even just individual tracks as part of a DJ set, or maybe have them on in the background at a party or a bar. Also they are very much of their time which I see is something plenty people cannot forgive. I guess nothing dates so much as old visions of the future. I think 90s dance music deserves a spot on the list even if i disagree with some of the choices. I think this one has way more invention, dynamics and melody than the more popular Big Beat albums that cluttered up the other end of the 90s.
Liked the rap, and the music, but the sung vocals took me away from wanting to listen to it more. Not so keen on the pet shop boys style bits.
I can move ANY mountain with my human energy. I think these guys were very earnest. It's fine to work to, but I wouldn't be spinning this up in my leisure time.
It’s fine
While listening to the album I was reading user reviews. Some of them are Harsh af. The album isn’t perfect, and I can probably choose hundreds of albums to add to the album list before this one, but it’s not bad per-sé. The rock/pop/rave fusion isn’t my go-to choice for music but this album highlights the 90s music scene in the UK more than I’ve found in a long time. Electronic & pop-rock were at their commercial heights at this time. I felt nostalgic through most of these songs even though I’ve never heard most of it. There’s a lot of fluff in this but songs like Hear Me O My People made me feel like I was playing Wipeout on the PS1 & Progen took me back to underage drinking at my friend’s house. If someone starts playing this album, I’m not going to moan, but I probably won’t go looking for it. Best: Hyperral, Hear Me O My People Worst: Possible Worlds
Very 90s, very dance/rave. Recognized the opening track, the rest faded into the background. The pedigree of artists that did remixes on this album is probably more impressive than anything else.
Old school house Super basic.
It was quite fun but too long for this genre. Became repetetive after some time.
на любителя. (без негатива)
Foundational 90s EDM. It can kind of drag but on their own at a rave night, each track is its own bop
okay but not for me
raves are not my style lmao, except daft punk exists... hmm
Postoji zub vremena i postoji zub vremena ovo je onaj drugi, lošiji zub vremena. Ipak move any mountan je i dalje jebeno zakon
Not great. Not terrible. Just some dated-sounding early 90s electro that, I must say, is excellent bkgd music for working to. Mostly unremarkable otherwise. 3/5
I did enjoy this in parts but less than i hoped. Again, shorter would be better...
A pretty good album, I liked Move Any Mountain the most.
all i see are people hating in their reviews but i kinda like it. minimally. it was definitely slandered. would vibe at a party to this. 3/5.
Good dance mix. Solid 3.5/5
It's fine but i was hoping for something in the vein of Underworld or Orbital when i saw this come up. Unfortunately it's a bit more one-note and not as interesting, goes on for far too long too. But it's alright.
Not for me
Slightly rave electronica, ok but a bit boring
Right from looking at the cover of the album and throughout listening, it felt like I was in an underwater rave with SpongeBob and his jellyfish friends. Funky, fun, and interesting. Reading about the group and learning they were a Scottish psychedelic rock band that made this electronic album in the early 90s was really cool. I’m sure for the time it was created when electronic music was just getting into its groove, this was revolutionary. I really do like how they blend psychedelic elements into each track, and they create an ambience that gets you into a trance. I will admit, that the day I was assigned this album by the generator, I was not feeling it. But listening to it again, I found a new appreciation for the nuances of this album. The beats, the samples, the variety of different instruments and styles. It keeps you interested! Favourite tracks included: “Possible Worlds”, “Evil is Even”, “Hear Me”, “666 Edit”, “Lightspan Soundwave”, “Make it Minimal” and “Progen 9.1”.

Typical 90s club music
Not horrible but not something I really want to listen to again.
Funky
meh
Did not like the first half at all, while the second half reminded me of the Beverly Hills cop sounds from the mid 80's ! Hard to find the right mood to listen to this and the album is quite long 2.5
Good
I truly CAN move move move any mountain
i like this type of shit but you this is far from a must-hear album. its also like way too long, but that goes for most house albums
3- Stars (7/15)
Dance music that sometimes has elements of rock but as the album goes on, there’s a lot more straight electronica. This is an easy sell for me, even if it sounds a little dated at times. It has great beats, a restless energy, and fun sounds and effects packed into every song. “666 Edit” was a highlight for me. Ooh and I love the house beat on “Lightspan Soundwave.”
Pretty tight 90's new jack swinging hip hop with some atmospheric jungle pads mixed it. It's a cool sound, and one that I particularly enjoy, but I often find it to be a bit dated. I don't know why, but something like this strikes me as sounding old and a bit corny yet at times something a decade older could sound somehow fresher to me. There is something about this era that has that effect for me. Probably because I grew up in the 90s now that I think of it... Solid 3/5. Not enough standout tracks, and not enough bad tracks to move it lower. Kind of forgettable and I don't know if it should be on the list unless I'm missing some cultural or influential aspect.
Early nineties dance music. Some tunes I recognise but a lot are headache inducing now :D
Why is it always 90s electronic
Not everything ages well. The Shamen were one of the first rave acts to look like a 'band' as opposed to a faceless DJ. Sadly how they looked, with their keytars, cyberpunk shades and Dune-esque still-suits of this era look a bit risible now. Cyberpunk crustie if you will. Mr C has always seem a bit risible as a cheeky cockerney chappie rapper. However, the beats and rhythms and textures are still pretty good. Of it's time.
Decent music. Enjoyable, but not totally into it.
Not terrible but not exactly my thing.
Hentoa reivi musiikkia, puuttuu kokonaan vaaran tunne. Vähän tylsää ja toistavaa. Mutta en vihannut niin siksi mid. Parhaat: Lightspan
Ok I always wanted to drop Ectasy and go to an all night rave. I'm too old for that shit now, maybe in the next life. This would be a solid soundtrack for it. I'm guessing that I wouldn't be too picky high as a kite?🤷🏻♂️🤔
Experimental electronic album from the early 1990s. It starts off well then it gets a bit too tiring and long and while it's quite complex here and there, it feels too simplistic after a while. I liked the random Sgt. Pepper's and Kraftwerk samples thrown in for a few seconds. The production is very good for the time, overall this sound is dated nowadays. The whole album was okay and quite enjoyable overall, but something is missing plus, as I said it's also too long (anything over an hour are too long).
5/10 Dont like techno type of music Favourite song=Move Any Mountain
I really liked the production of this, but similar to fat of the land, the vocals take away a bit for me. At the same time, though, there were some really great pop hooks in there, so I can't complain too much
Not my fave
Listening to this album you can really hear the Shamen move from psychedelic rock into a new rave sound. I really enjoyed move any mountain, what a great song to start the album. Its an OK album but not one I would want to listen to again Its avergage. I have no idea how it made the list. Favourite song: Move and mountain and Hyperreal orbit Least favourite: Omega Amigo Album artwork: Standard album cover
Sounds like the music a "Serious artist" makes in an early 90s movie.
Honestly this is Kids Bop-esque dance music. However, there is something about the positive vibes from this album that are infectious. With all the negativity in the world, we should be embracing more art like this.
I listened to this while building ikea furniture and it made perfectly passable background music. It was a little long and got a little repetitive, but whatever. Low 3.
Not my thing, but still had a good time with it! Favorite track: Lightspan Soundwave
I quite enjoyed this but without the big singles it never is anything other than decent.
Not terrible by any means. The version on Spotify has got ‘Move Any Mountain’ on it, which adds a star
3.5/5 but I’m leaning 3 here so I don’t oversaturate and inflate my ratings with 4s and 5s. Also a 3 because I will not be adding any of the songs to my playlist simply because of the genre of music. However I will say I was really surprised with how much I enjoyed a techno/electronic/dance album. I can definitely see why people who are into this kind of music would love this album.
Mostly this sounds like the club music you would hear in a movie set in the 80s-early-90s. It's interesting, but nothing too revolutionary. The MC on some of the tracks is...eh.
Not usually a fan of this genre of music but I quite liked this.
3.7 maybe can see why it was important but dated af
I listend to a fair bit of The Shamen back in the day and reading their wiki article makes me realise it was only because of the popularity of Boss Drum that I probably even noticed them. This album has most of what I remember of The Shamen and the context seems to be that it's a transition record. Faves: Move Any Mountain, Hear Me
I was dimly aware of the big single from this at the time, and more aware of (and negatively inclined towards) their later releases. This wasn't too bad, actually - there's a bunch of ambient and chillout music I like that shares DNA with this. Definitely prefer the tracks with less Mr C on them. I'm intrigued about their earlier stuff, too, where it sounds like they used to be a guitar psychedelia act? Didn't know that! Fave tracks - "Possible Worlds: Deep PSI", "Make It Minimal". "Hyperreal Orbit" was alright too - apparently a single too, but I don't remember that one.
En-Tact by the Shamen is this dance/electronic mix that is fun and not overly repetitive. The lyrics, like with a lot of electronic music, were unimportant and melted into the background. They weren't anything interesting, because the electronic music grabbed and kept your attention. I keep thinking about how repetitive En-Tact did not sound, for which I'm thankful. A lot of electronic, including Daft Punk, is not enjoyed by me precisely because of how repetitive it always sounds. That, and the beat provided a good power walking pace, makes this album a 3 for me, though on the lower side.
I am a sucker for that 90s electronic sound that leans slightly "new age" and "world", and this album is exactly that. I really feel like the blending of the two sounds makes for an interesting amalgamation, but I digress. I expected this to have a low score, but I didn't know it would be quite as low as it was. Anyway, I liked this okay. High 2, getting a round up.
About halfway through the lengthy runtime, I realized that perhaps The Shamen are more clever than one would expect. It's a good, but yet another, loooong electronic album.
Electronic club music from the 90’s. Feels odd to just sit and listen to it for this project. Wasn’t meant for that. Bumping, certainly would get me on the dance floor.
Ooo this hasn't aged well has it. I'm sure groundbreaking at the time. But jesus. It's a shame hearing this that many other similar (ish) records at the time that have aged well haven't been included on this list seemingly. Autechre, AFX, maybe even Squarepusher if you extend a few years later. 2.5*
A bit too noisy and upbeat for my electronic tastes, but something to listen to in the background just fine. Reminds me of my first school party.
The list of mixing credits reads like a who’s who of the Second Summer of Love.
It was just good to hear something decent after the last couple of days. Enjoyed it,3/4* ? It’s a high 3
7/11/24 An okay album.
This was decent.
Passable dance music 6/10
Lots of memories of them. Doesn’t really feel like an album though.
Somehow I thought this would be an early house album when I saw the artist name, I was surprised to be right! I liked this album, it's closer to the house music that I like than your usual 90s techno fare, although it did run long. The genre has come a long way from the early Kraftwerk days to this album, and still has so much farther to evolve, even to this day.
Always had a hard time with the shamen - some good stuff on here but falls flat I feel
Going to have to deep dive early electronica after this one. Not the best album of all time, but is a glimpse into a really cool world that I have never explored
Listening to this album was like being a kid where there’s an adult trying to be cool and you can’t help but make fun of him with your friends as he seems just way out of touch but then you grow up and realize he may have actually been cool in his day and you start feeling a little bad for him. You’re left with a smile as you reminisce on the good and bad times
I was going to say that this hasn't aged well, but ... It's OK. It's just that it is rather "of its time". I remember The Shamen from the 80's 90's, and the re-listening reminded me of .... good times. But, stripping away that nostalgia, how would some fresh ears react to it? Meh. some good bits, but too many sections of "We need to pad this out to over an hour....let's just leave the backing rhythm track playing for a while."
A good enough listen that fills the background. The sounds have dated a bit but a fun nostalgic listen. No complaints. 2.7/5 -> 3/5
For dance music, this wasn't so bad. Not as super repetitive like the genre usually is. I was going to mention liking the '80s retro sound, but I just saw it came out in 1990, so it wasn't so retro then.
I don’t hate it
Tried listening high liked it for a couple songs then got bored
Ok i guess. Little long
Definitely some filler on there, but also some absolute classics. 👌
everyone knows but nobody cares
Not bad. Different and good era for music.
The Shamen... ah a long repressed memory. Nothing about this album is outstanding, but it's part of a longer story about 90s dance music, and deserves its place.
Definitely a bit dated sounding at points. It's VERY 90s. However, I really love the beats here and the synth sounds they achieve. Really fun stuff.
Scottish electronica. I was first nervous when I read that they were Scottish, but I was surprised. This album is fairly solid (unlike most other Scottish music on this list). Kinda like The Prodigy, or Primal Scream. For a Scottish band, quite good! Favourite songs: 666 Edit, Move Any Mountain, Lightspan Least favourite songs: Evil is Even 3/5
Ok
Been a while since the last "obscure >1 hour-long electronica album from the 90s that sounds like a PS1 racing game soundtrack". You know what, this ain't even that bad. Long as fuck and pretty unremarkable, but I've had much worse electronica on here.
Unexpectedly cool proto electronica from what would’ve likely been another Simple Minds or Big Country if one of their dads didn’t own a TV repair shop or the like. 8-bit drum machines and an easy hand on the rest of it and somehow it’s transporting like Trainspotting. Huh
Fun 90s electronic album. A bit outdate, but can definitely see why it was popular back then.
Now That’s What I Call Mall Music ‘90!
Fun dance music, probably won't listen to it again but it was fun to have on in the background.
Électronique quelque bon son
More pop focused than expected, this album dips in quality quite a bit in the middle, where tracks whiz by the listener in a blur of dated dance tracks that fail to hold a candle to most other dance musicians from the time. However, this album makes up for that in its pop sensibilities. From what I can tell the Shamen used to be a pretty different sounding band, and some of that difference comes together whenever their tracks turn into a homage (rip-off?) of Pet Shop Boys. It's cheap and cheesy, but the formula works, and it allows the first few tracks to be solid dance-pop tunes in an era full of them. I also think the album brings it back around in the end, with a lot of sampling that makes the mix feel busy and cluttered, but can come together to be okay. That's the name of the game here, okay. I don't think it's anything special, certainly not an album to hear before you die, but I've heard worse in the genre, and at least this one TRIES to do something. It's inoffensive, and I came away from it less hateful than albums in this genre generally make me, and that's gotta count for something, personally. Still, just meh.
Too eighty vibe, but not bad
Pretty basic electronic stuff , but the songs sounded draggy and sometimes too long for what they were.
Very hippie, super positive stuff. As with all the dance records on this list, it's long, but I guess they never want the party to end, eh? Favorite tracks: "666 Edit"
That was alright, all the songs sounded very similar though!
En-Tact is certainly a time capsule of a record. Is it distinguishable from other work in the same style? I'm not sure. Did I enjoy it? Yes.
Gives me vibes of a 90s PS1 era racing game soundtrack, couldn't listen to it a lot but it had some catch beats
Soft 3. Good for a one time listen.
2.5
An album that’s aged like warm milk. I loved it when it came out and now it sounds clumsy.
The sort of record to get the hackles up of many a user here by virtue of its genre, this is a really interesting bridge between psychedelia and rave culture with, yes, occasionally basic lyrical content (looking at you, Hyperreal Selector), but you'd be hard-pressed to find something as bold as a sick dance beat set to a sermon from famed anti-apartheid cleric/politician Allan Boesak (a not-uncontroversial figure for many reasons). Music means something, and can be a hell of a platform if you can grab people with it.
Every song with Mr. C was an absolute banger. The rest of the albums is fine, I guess, but the whole thing is worth a listen for 'Move Any Mountain' and 'Make It Mine'.
Some interesting songs. Best track is Move Any Mountain
Not huge into the overall aesthetic of this album at its outset. 90s electro-trance fused with a loose interpretation of "hip-hop." Possible Worlds > Omega Amigo is a high point thus far. Really dig Omega Amigo on its own. Yea idk, this was fine, but not really something I see much replay value out of for me. Soft 3 / 5.
Some of this is fun and definitely falls into the 90's rave era. I can feel it sometimes other times meh. This ones a little too long but still very solid. Lightspan is spooky! Could definitely take ecstasy in a warehouse to this.
Great running music. Too many refrains of I can move any mountain.
Pretty nice sounding late 90's club music. Sometimes it lost me.
This was fine. Could maybe be setbreak music
It grew on me. 3
3.3
90s rave, quite pleasant
Grooves
I waffled between loving it and hating it… pretty good grind music but it got annoying sometimes. 5/10
Reminds me of streets of rage
3.4/5. listened 2x. solid EDM.
2.5
The opening track sounds SO dated. The drum machine in particular roots it firmly in that specific early 90's era, and to me it just makes it sound really hollow and superficial. I was fully expecting to give up about half way through this with a verdict, but to its credit it did pick up and there were some nice tracks in there. I don't know if this is a positive or not, but it drifted into the background really easily, so there's... that? 2.5 rounded up.
Interesting genre-wise to see the crossover and blend of psychedelic rock with rave electronic music but overall it's not very exciting.
I quite liked this album. I think I preferred their dance tracks to their more psychedelic tracks.
Verges on camp.
Interesting listen. The electronic aspects of the music is solid. But it really leaves me wanting more substance. Not a bad listen.
Nothing remotely remarkable.
3.6 - I'm embarrassed to once again be the cranky contrarian, always disagreeing with the general consensus on this site, but I actually enjoyed this record. Sure, it's a little crude and hammy, especially considering how far EDM has come. And, sure, the conscious rapping sounds frozen in time. But, given all the recent 90's revivalism, this gay rave sound has come full circle and sounds cool to me again. And unlike so many other EDM records I've had to endure lately, this music genuinely makes me want to dance -- what a concept!
You had to be there… When this dropped it felt so fresh. It was like a British Information Society, with rap. This was the original club music. It was raves at the Hacienda. It was among the precursors to Techno. Move Any Mountain could still stand on a workout mix. The rest of this isn’t bad, actually. Yes, it’s dated, but there’s some real work here. It’s got that experimental vibe you get off an early Depeche Mode album. Possible Worlds is easy background music. This record might be a good choice for studying. Uptempo, but not droning or too invasive. A toe-tapper. Sounds better blasted at a thousand people high on Xtasy at 3 in the morning. Also, this band’s videos defined the standard techno music video. Check out the film It’s All Gone, Pete Tong for a perfect parody.
+1 for reading the KLFs #1 single guide and producing move any mountain, complete with its era correct awful rap. I had no lasers when listening to this so it didn't hit as hard.
Some pretty fun tracks on here, most of them landed for me. Fav track: Possible Worlds (Deep PSI)
hauska. kivoja lempeitä teknojympytyksiä, ei aina tarvi täysillä mennä.. liian nöyrää laulamista. ei sovi tähän .. ANTAKAA HUUTAMAAN--eli ei ymmärrystä, can't read the room... flash game musiikkia, ihan hyvä. tietenkin jos yli tunnin tätä yrittää kriittisesti kuunnella niin on mahdollista että ei tykkää... ei olekaan ideana tätä kuunnella alusta loppuun... paitsi minä sen tein ja silti tykkäsin!!!!! ELI ON IDEANA.. JUURI SE!!! kolme tähteä viidestä possible worlds: deep PSI
Fourth studio album? Really? Pure electro-pop. Expect nothing more, and you'll receive nothing less. A little Yaz, a little Harold Faltermeyer. Too much NRG in this album for me.
A pretty wide range of electronic-pop that occasionally dips into a more trance-rave type style. The main downside is that some of the electronic beats are dated and sound like they come from the late 80's. Others are a bit more successful. Lightspan and Make It Minimal hit that groove for me. The rest are just ok.
Your usual electronic music album, nothing to see here, please disperse.
Best wel nice
this is corny as hell but i'd be having an excellent time if i heard it in a gay bar
Good quality electronic music. I just cannot rate higher as it is a genre that eats itself on a regular basis.
Some interesting rhythms in here. Definitely a new experience and a unique soundscape. Fun if you like dance, maybe. Fav tracks: Move Any Mountain, Make It Mine
kind of sexy eurotrash meets new order meets nine inch nails.. grew on me while listening aber es war dann auch etwas eintönig i changed my mind it's really grating
That was some no-good nonsense.
Different.
Pleasantly surprised, actually quite groovy and fun. Bit long
Club music. Lit if ur high off ur ass
Fun but not super memorable or anything.
Nice throwback to the 90s, only listened once
Liked some early tracks but the album ran out of steam for me.
I always thought of The Shamen as a singles rather than albums band, and I don't think I was wrong.
Unexpectedly recognisable first track. Everything else we had not heard before, but it made for chill listening.
Best Song: 666 Edit. This makes me want to Mortal Kombat, even if the stuttery bullshit in the middle made me thought I was having an embolism. Worst Song: Lightspan. "Life is never enough." Overall: Older electronic music that is sometimes interesting, sometimes sounds vaguely vampiric. Fine enough for the background, I suppose.
OK. Quite background really.
possible worlds: deep psi, evil is even,
take away the vocals and this could literally be in a sonic or street fighting game
I mean, if you told me I was going to listen to some rave music from 1990, this is exactly what I would expect. I'm not sure its good but they knew their audience anyway.
Funky and weird. Kinda like psych rock and early hip hop got busy 6/10
Didn’t really move any of my mountains but there are a couple of really good dance tunes. Lightspan and Possible Words reminded me of sweating and dancing in gay nightclubs in my youth.
I wasn’t sure who this band was. And then Move any Mountain started. I didn’t know any of their other music. Basic club fare, it didn’t detract from my life but maybe the ing I would seek out.
Good dance album
First album on the 1001 list by an artist I hadn’t even heard of. Despite that, I knew I was getting into an electro-house album by the artwork alone. The early 90s vaguely futuristic “tribal” art and font ooze chill-out house. Very fortunately, this is something closer to The KLF than to The Orb. I love the former (a little dancy), and I can’t stand the latter (very ambient). While The Shamen fall somewhere in between, the album overall edges towards The KLF and away from The Orb. Many of the songs do drag on and get boring before they end; I can’t imagine enjoying extended versions that probably would’ve been typical at clubs.
Fun 90’s electronic album.
I enjoyed this, acid house was an interesting little pocket that didn’t last long.
I love 90s dance music and the first track is a classic. Otherwise, not the most memorable dance album I've encountered.
One of those albums that I really didn't feel like listening to but once it was on I enjoyed it. However I had to pause it and then didn't feel compelled to resume playing it.
Interesting music.
Very 90's
I liked it
Passabler, aber nicht begeisternder Electronic
catchy techno europeo
Cringy para estándares actuales pero ta bien
Decent cardio music.
This album would've been a lot more fun at a rave in the early 90's then my kitchen on a Tuesday morning getting ready for work. It's good for what it is.
This brought the rave scene to the main stream in the UK in the early 90's. I remember it being labeled as dangerous and drug fuelled. Which made it more intriguing as a young person. I remember the hits, but a full listen through unveils a surprisingly diverse and musically accomplished album. There is a bigger debt to the Pet shop boys than I expected and all in all the hour skipped along well.
Very fun. Interesting listening to an album that bridges new wave with 90s electronic.
Not something I'd go out of my way to listen to, but fine for background music.
This had some really good techno sound which I usually don't care for.
I don't normally like EDM music, but this is hitting a little different than it normally would for this genre. The repetitiveness of the songs kills it a bit for me. The melodic material is all very good, and the vocals are always well timed. I'm left wishing songs were 30 seconds to a minute shorter so that I'm getting less fluff and just the best stuff.
I thought it was pretty good, but started going downhill after the 9th song. Well mainly Hear Me (mumbling), 666 Edit (annoying breaks) and make it Minimal (annoying sounds). The others after that are good, but basically different versions of other songs on the album, so shouldn't weigh too heavily.
It’s fine for dance/electronica.
Never heard of it. Seems like the soundtrack for a late 80's movie.
Enjoyed, sure it’s a little dated, but nice background music.
Rather generic and boring.
3/5. A pretty chill collection of electronic songs, doesn't stand out but is nice to the ear. I'll probably play this in the background as I study or write, no stand outs just no bad ones either.
Not bad
All good as a 90s dance album, gets a bit samey after a few tracks and not many out and out hits...
Decent stuff
Surprisingly good. One or two clunkers, but got my feet tappin' and head a-noddin! Less vocal sampling would make it better
In another life, I was dancing all night long to this in a Scottish club. Not this life though, so it’s just alright.
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Evil is even
Solid old-school EDM, not really my thing
Sounded ahead of its time. Would honestly be better as a full instrumental album.
Sounds good but it's not my jam.
This was okay for the genre that I'm not a huge fan of.
Representative of early rave music. You can feel the MDMA and acid on this one, not just the obvious lyrics, but also the busy overlapping and repeating synths that immerse you into this industrial techno world. The effects are pretty simple and follows a lot of 80s synthpop, but with the fusion of psychedelic rock, it shares a lot in common with Madchester bands like Stone Roses and Primal Scream. I thought it was pretty decent, coherent while offering quite a bit, but nothing outstanding. Favorites: Human NRG, Omega Amigo, Lightspan
After listening to over an hour of this, I see the book uses the 1990 vinyl tracklist, with no repeat tracks. Well that’s just fantastic, how was anyone supposed to know that? & one of the guys died promoting this album? En-Tact is really sending me down a rabbit hole, and it’s not even 10am! I wonder if this would be rated as low as it is without all the fluff needed to pad this to a CD length. If I pretend the album ended at “Hear Me” like the book promised, then I’d say it was decently enjoyable. (The 3rd song where the lyrics going back to “Move any Mountain” in the online version didn’t do much for me) Right now it's a 3-star for me, if more for the textures & samples over the singing (& especially rapping). Certain 90s electronica I've been exposed to goes past right dated, into a dusty backroom & through the looking glass to a strange world where club music and the RuneScape soundtrack weren't all that far apart. And I kinda like it Only other case of album version madness like this is Opus Dei by Laibach, which is a fascinating 40 minute album to me but an interminable 60 minute album, with all the extra CD tracks. HL: “Move any Mountain” (which technically isn’t even in the *real* tracklist), “Hyperreal” (either of the two versions), “Possible Worlds”, “Omega Amigo”
6/10. Actually pretty good. I think my biggest problem with electronic music is just that it had its heyday in an era when everyone felt that just because cds had space for 70 minute albums, they should make their albums 70 minutes
Awfully dated, including a boatload of parody-level hokey electronic effects and flourishes. Not a big fan of most of the vocals, sung or rapped, either. Not terrible but not something I'd generally bother with.
fine.
Not really my thing, but I’ve listened to way worse albums on this list.
Bouncing techno beat. Wonderful mind space for Friday
Whoa, rewind to 1990. I remember "Move any Mountain" which apparently wasn't even on the original release. I enjoyed it as background to work and clued in to a few tunes, but it sounded VERY 90s. A lot of the big names of the time (Oakenfold, Orbit, Dangers, 808 state) guested on this album. Solid but also made me feel old.
Groovy sounds, something to chill to. I’m dowwnnnnnnn.
Not too bad, but it got repetitive.
Surprisingly fun and dancey - sure it’s a little dated but it’s a pumping album. Maybe the 90s overly optimistic rave hippie culture sounds naive and laughable but also if you take it in earnestness it’s a bit refreshing after the mountains of cynicism that came since.
I’m not sure why, but I liked this one. I won’t listen to the whole thing through again, but I’ll happily add a few tracks to my mindless background noise playlist.
Pretty good. Not a necessary listen, but good.
Actually pretty entertaining!
Another cool electronic dance album! Perfectly 90's with a hint of 80's as it enters the new decade. Good one to end the week on!
I bet that was awesome dance music when it came out. Great rhythm. Not my style, not impressed with the musicality. Won't listen again.
Es una mezcla interesante y rara de generos :D
Quite pleasant, yet not particularly noteworthy 🐡 3,5/5
Ah, the 90s. What a decade. Would rather have had Boss Drum as the Shamen album, but this was just what I needed for a post-Bank Holiday Tuesday.
Solid slab of 90's dance music
En-Tact is the fourth album by Scottish band the Shamen. This is an electronic album that saw a combination of the band's past psychedelic rock with the new EDM. En-Tact performed averagely well critically and commercially. I'm a fan of EDM music so this album was fun to hear. It was nice to listen to an album from the early days of rave music and even cooler that the band transitioned from rock music.
More entertaining than i initially expected, still 3 stars but a fun 3 stars.
not bad
Meh
Liked this loads more than I thought I would. Tbf I thought it was going to be the worst shit of all time
Pretty good. Was digging the grooves. It was a fun listen.
Today’s album is by an artist that I haven’t come across before. I cant really talk about any preconceptions because of this, but it was surprising to see that the genre on Apple Music is dance. The 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die book has very few dance albums in it, so let’s find out what makes this better than the others. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Move Any Mountain, Omega Amigo I’ll start by saying that I don’t necessarily agree that this album should be considered essential. It was decent fun, and I was humming the hook to Move Any Mountain through the day, but I don’t necessarily hear anything here that differentiates it from many other dance albums. I did enjoy the album, so I don’t want it to sound like I felt it was bad, but it certainly didn’t blow me away.
surprisingly better than expected
I don’t love the genre but it was surprisingly fun and mindless work music.
3.5
Had never heard of this band before. It's pretty typical early 90s rave music, really. Wiki claims psychedelic rock mixed in there too, which... Kinda I guess? But really it's some rather generic bouncy EDM. Honestly liked this somewhat, but it's pretty dated and rather samey. Doubt I'll come back to it, but you never know.
Nie von denen gehört, ist aber irgendwie interessant, 90s vibes
I don't know why people were so down on this. For the most part, it's your standard electronica fare. Harmless enough. "666 Edit," "Move Any Mountain" "Human NRG" were all pretty good. But just as with any electronica for me, none of it is very distinctive. The songs get very repetitive after awhile. I think my favorite was the "666 edit", but the others start to blur together after awhile. It was fine, but not mind-blowing. Next.
Another one I'm not sure I needed to hear before I die. The first half of the album had a lot of good moments - plenty of cool sounding tracks that made me bop (e.g., Move Any Mountain, Omega Amigo, Evil is Even (cool track - properly dark sounding), Hyperreal Orbit, Lightspan, Make It Mine, and Oxygen Restriction). After that, though, it was just a bunch of meh remix-y type stuff. Got pretty boring. So, solid 3, but not planning to revisit.
Interesting concept of mixing prog rock and electronic music but the album becomes rather forgettable after the initial uniqueness wears off
Electronica!
This was long and I thought it would be repititive, but it's wasn't. Parts of it were pretty darn catchy. I'd like to come back but don't know if I will. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
Bit dated byt good fun
Música electrónica fácil de escuchar, sin ser demasiado estruendosa. Para entusiastas del género
pensé q era de rap pero nada q ver
Future feeling, new sensation Body is rocking and the mind is reeling And rolling race changing motion Flowing like a river into the ocean Better get yourself ready for the new vibration My vision, one nation, one tribe One day'll come the might to move any mountain 3/5
I felt sure I knew The Shamen by name, but couldn't place their music. Sure enough the album opener "Move Any Mountain" was the song I was thinking of. Decent 90s electro-indie-rave type stuff, but much like an extended trip it went on a bit too long and didn't really progress to great heights that were hinted at earlier.
It has some good passages of nice grooves and interesting beats, but overall it lacked the energy to keep me engaged.
Some fun bops, good background music. Nothing really stands out though
It was fine... Just sounds like any other 90s dance album???
This was decent electronic music. I liked it well enough. Not sure what might have been especially noteworthy about it, though.
And mountains they did move. But an entire album of Shamen is of limited interest
Literally have never heard of this band in my life. It was pretty fun, but the rapping part is a bit much. Can definitely see myself using this as focus music down the road. It was hard to find standouts because the music is pretty repetitive, but some stuff definitely stuck out a bit among the tracks. Standouts: Move Any Mountain, Make It Mine, 666 Edit
Move any mountain great tune the rest was OK. No ezzehe good though.
Enjoyable synth sounds. electro hand clap cla-cla-cla hand clap.
79/100: Feeling very blessed by the album generator today. It’s not that this was my favorite album so far anything close to that. I had to wake up at 2:30AM to get to the airport this morning, so I really needed an album that would keep me up. Boy did this do the job. At certain points I felt like I was traveling through space and time as opposed to heading south down I-65. Very good album for what it is; however, I don’t think I ever plan on casually listening to this.
Sva wel nie fenomenaal fzo
Good songs in general, but not my personal favourite genre.
Not a bad race music album, enjoyed the listen for background music
Electronic is my favourite genre of music (well, EDM, precisely), but I wasn’t really feeling this album. I didn’t hate it but it felt detached and emotionless.
I've mentioned before how I rarely listen to EDM and related styles (I'm quite ignorant of this area of music, so please forgive me if I've mislabeled this album as EDM), so I'm glad this project is introducing me to these forms. This is good stuff. I like it and I'm glad I heard it.
3.5
Música electrónica. Ni fu ni fa.
Overall I liked it. Suffers from being one of the first, so sounds a bit generic now. However some enjoyable tracks - Evil is Even Hear Me Not really interesting enough to listen to again though.
Djelomičan đir
This list has a bit of a sheen attachment with British 90s EDM. Almost guaranteed to make it. It was ok
Good fun listen. Not great though.
3.75
Alright album of kinda dance trance music. Why is this on here? Oh, it’s Scottish. That’s why.
This was their best album before they went bobbins with e’s are good etc. Goes on a bit long, but some decent tunes.
The most 90's dance thing I've heard in a while. Album's way too long but I enjoyed it a fair bit.
Not bad. Decent electronic album annoying at times. One track where it's skipping was particularly awful. But overall okay
Good kept me moving during a garadge cleanup
Surprised by how much I didn't hate this.
