Reviews (page 6 of 7)

I canNOT with the skits. I'm already not a grime fan, and the skits weren't even separate tracks; they were part of the tracks with the songs. Not for me.

One or two good moments but even for 2016 felt basic.

Wrong time for this. This rap style is just irritating to me. It did have some interesting accompanying music at times, but the vocal delivery was a strong turn off. Pass on this.

I'm not a fan of modern rap/hip-hop, but actually it wasn't that bad at all. It was at least listenable and not too long. I can't give it more than 2 stars, though.

This feels like it's trying too hard to be the British "good kid maad city".

This was so formulaic it even includes the obligatory recorded phone call that ends in an argument.

Despite my giving it the same rating this was better than the DizzeeRascal album on this list.

I don't think this is my genre. The beats are too repetitive and... well grimy. Can't rate it too low because I recognise it's a great representation of its genre... but I also did not finish it as it really isn't for me at all.

1 star for the accent, and 1 star for "That's Not Me" (admittedly catchy). Otherwise, this genre (grime) ain't for me. Sounds repetitive, and the lyrics are bleh.

Hip Hop / R‘n B…4/10

40/100 First HipHop album in the list and I was surprised to see it. Skepta is an artist I always liked when hearing him featured but I got tired of his style quickly on his own records. But I was prepared to give this a fair chance. The songs are all decently structured and Skepta is a decent enough lyricist but the beats are bland most of the time with a few creative outliers. My main problem is that I feel no structure in the tracklisting itself. The concept seems loose and the tracklisting inconcise. Overall not an awful showing but nothing I'll spin again.

Near-Cockney rapping with occasionally awkward-sounding flows. Flat, repetitive beats. The initial impression is that there nothing’s special here, but one does warm a bit over the course of the record. “Ladies Hit Squad” and “Numbers” are best tracks, likely because of the guest spots. What does that tell us? Last track doesn't suck. 2.5 for 2.

Another album that’s just not my jam. I can totally understand how someone would love this. Unfortunately I’m not that person and found it pretty grating for most of it. 2/5

It's British rap. It's fine but not great by any means. Admittedly not my genre but still, there's not much to note here. Lyrics can be cheesy/cringe at times (see Numbers). Meh. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)

Was pretty excited for this one, since I heard good things about Skepta. But this wasn't my thing. Repetitive and too many skits.

I don't know what I was expecting. This is all new to me. I might have to give it another listen. Some songs are way too repetitive lyrically. Som beats are great. Some songs I like and others I don't think I like at all. I'm interested in hearing what comes after this. See if he grew as much as I think he could.

Listened Before? N Ever wonder what would happen if Eminem had a British accent, worse lyrics, and a producer who isn't Dre? Me either. But that's what this record reminds me of. Rambling and not too interesting. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Man

I’m sure it takes incredible skill but I can’t connect with anything here. And I’m sure it’s not meant for me and that’s ok.

jadu, inte helt kass men det är heller inte så bra. en hyffsat stark tvåa.

Not my thing - I’m sure the kids love it but I never got the whole grime thing - it’s gets two stars because he’s producing music…

It’s interesting to hear rap with a British accent and also interesting that many of the lyrics were about very American things. But “interesting” does not a good album make. What started out as “Huh, interesting” quickly became grating - particularly the skits. This probably deserves one star but I’m giving it an extra for the novelty.

I would expect a grime album to take more risks. Not enough “stink face”. Every song was pretty good, but nothing stood out.

Not really my jam. A lot of repetitive lyrics. Seemed well produced but still just not my jam. 2.5 stars

I have trouble taking British rappers seriously with their lingo. Just makes me laugh whenever I hear them say ridiculous words. The end of Corn on the Curb is exactly what I mean with all of the Fam and Blood. This was as a shame because the first song came out and sounded really good with some solid beats and I was excited for the rest. But this just ended up being not so bloody good innit. The lyrics were so bad. Kind of absolute shite if you ask me fam.

I don't really like this kind of music. It wasn't ass, but I was content to move along as soon as it was completed.

koji kurac je sa outroima na svakoj jebenoj pjesmi

This has a lot of very 2000s style beats. I kinda like that's not me, but I think his newer albums and features are muuch better. I don't think I can give it a 3 based on a lot of other albums I gave a 3 to. And I looove rap

British Rappers not my usual scene. Was not awful, but did not move the needle.

01) Konnichiwa - 6,0 02) Lyrics - 5,5 03) Corn on the Curb - 4,5 04) Crime Riddim - 4,5 05) It Ain't Safe - 5,5 06) Ladies Hit Squad - 5,5 07) Numbers - 6,0 08) Man - 5,0 09) Shutdown - 6,0 10) That's Not Me - 5,5 11) Detox - 5,0 12) Text Me Back - 5,5 TOTAL: 5,38 (54/100) Current ranking: 167/188 Normally I'm not a fan of rap, and grime is even lower on my list of preferences. However, it's funny to me how in the comments people slander this album because it's British. As if everything American is perfect (endless folk rock albums from the early seventies, I'm looking at you!). This gets a low rating from me because I don't like it, not because it's British. I gave a lower rating to many songs because of unnecessary dialogues/skits at the end, if I wanted dialogues I would watch movies.

Mildly interesting; but its not for me.

Some good tracks, some parts for me hard to listen to.

This wasn't really for me. I did recognise that's not me, but I'm not sure where from.

Hm, although I was glad to learn more about grime, this isn't really my thing.

Guess this is what the song 'mans not hot' parodies

Skepta is a British rapper who is from a Nigerian family, who is a known in the UK grime scene. This is electronic based, rap/hip-hop, with a lyrically style that is very repetitive - to an odd, boring level at points. This is not particularly danceable dance music.

s'alright, i guess. i do like british rappers, but not sure this one really spoke to me. is this really an album we need to hear before we die?

I liked the Fireman Sam reference. That's about it.

Oh good. Grime. Ehhhh. I think this being a British list really is a drain. I can assure you I didn’t need to listen to this before I die. Why’s he keep calling people pagans? To genius! It didn’t tell me. I’m sorry. Hey, this sucks! This is my second British hip hop album in 23 albums. That’s fucking awful. Hey do you want a better hip hop album from 2016? Danny Brown’s Atrocity Exhibition! Now that’s an album I’m glad I heard before I died. And it’s almost certainly more influential than what ever the fuck this was. The end of corn on the curb is the most embarrassing thing I’ve heard so far! Ay what was that Call of Duty lobby interaction. It Ain’t Safe kinda slaps tbf. And he gave a shout out to the Based God Lil B? Ok this might actually save this.

That’s Not Me is a good track. The rest do nothing for me 2/5

2016 certainly was. a moment for rap. call it the drake effect. respectfully why is this on this list i’m not even trying to be mean but ? i do enjoy the use of sampling immensely. clever.

started out interesting, but i didn't end up finishing this. the skits were really a drag.

This didn't stand out for me at all.

It was tolerable at first but got more annoying as it went on. Definitely not my style of hip hop.

Quite liked it on a superficial level, though a closer listen reveals some sketchy lyrics that just didn't work and the skits were laughable. Not all bad though.

Hadn't heard of Skepta. Not something I'd choose to listen to, fam, the album is listenable enough, fam, the skits get tiresome, fam, but decent beats to keep me engaged, doubt I'd listen again, fam. My highlight was picking up on the QotSA "Regular John" sample/loop on "Man". 2.5

generally just quite tiresome. he's got a good flow and the beats are fine if not anything to write home about, but the lyrics are just completely lacking in any artfulness or subtlety. i tried to be on bored at first but it really just wears on you. the beats and music start to blend together, the lyrics just get lamer and stupider

I'm a white guy who's nearly 40 so grime is not especially my forte but I'm struggling to understand why Konnichiwa is on this list when, two months earlier, a much MUCH better album in Made in the Manor was released and that is not on this list to my knowledge. I don't think it's even a particularly strong grime album from other artists I've listened it, but it has more crossover appeal and I guess that's reflected in the accolades and awards it got. I hoped for/wanted a more raw, edgy sound, and the only songs that really gave me something like that were the obvious Shutdown (hence the expectation, I knew that before listening to the album) and Man. Think I can only go as high as a high 2 here, and now I'm gonna go listen to Kano because he's just better at this.

Yeah, this isn't great. I knew the two famous songs, hadn't heard any of the rest and wasn't particularly impressed by it. Very much not the target audience for this music but, like the rest of you, I still know better iterations of a similar thing. 2/5.

2 stars, pretty mixed album except for the radio tracks

Nothing good

Skepta doing his thing. And I could care less.

Tough to rate this. I really don’t enjoy any of this genre, so it’s no surprise I don’t like it. Somehow slightly more tolerable in a british accent, + 1 star.

Had high hopes after the first track but it really tailed off. It did make rememebr this all-time great tweet so that was nice: “uk rappers be like she suck on my willy it’s quite delightful if i catch you in west gloucestershire you’ll catch the rifle”

Corny.... Ludacris type bars..... why are we still doing skits in the streaming era can we not leave this shit in 2003??? I liked this but all the songs sound the same also Brits are just not as cool as Americans

I guess if you're British?? I don't really get it. Pretty forgettable stuff and not all that interesting. Maybe it's the British accents, but it doesn't really work for me at all. Sounds very silly.

Not a big fan of british rap

Little too Ali G for me

Don’t listen to rap much, and this is probably my first UK rap album. Decent variety in the hooks, interspersing of conversation seems fairly common in the genre but was a distraction. Not bad but nothing terribly new or valuable. Hard to find a song I wanted to add to my playlist.

No thanks, I just can't get into this sort of thing. Try again later.

Did Andy Samberg base his SNL music skits on this band? The lyrics are shallow and the music is nearly the same for all the songs.

Bad album. Lyrics are dumb and amazingly repetitive. Underlying music is simple and unimaginative. I know I'm not a fan of the genre, but come on! There's better rap/hip-hop out there for sure.

Sometimes there was repetitive, droning music pumping behind some mediocre fast rap, sometimes it seemed like he was trying to imitate someone else. There were a lot of typical rap tropes but not much originality.

Nah bruh

British rap sucks WHATS WITH THE FUCKING PHONECALLS I DONT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THIS GUYS LIFE 2.9/5

I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, That's not Me and Shutdown I liked

I really can't stand British accent rap, and I'm British myself. Give me Kendrick Lamar over this any day. Favourite tracks: Crime Riddim (mostly for the Sega Mega Drive-esq synth line), Shutdown.

Not for me. Initial Japanese music was nice, it this is just not for me.

Great flow but seems to overuse the same rhythm patterns. Same with the beats. 2 stars

The production value is good. The tracks are too explicite for me quite frankly. I likely won't listen again. 2/5

Everything about this is just mediocre at best. How the hell is this in here aside from the obvious UK bias? You know MF DOOM was born in England. Everything he ever did blows this album out of the water. DOOM should have at least 1 album on this list.

No me va nada el rap y este disco no ha cambiado mi percepción.

Eh. Kind of a normal hip hop album. Didn’t really finish it.

Not my taste. A bit aggressive and lacking in tunes. Shut Down has limited novelty value, but that's it for me.

How did we get here? What are we doing? Why is this even on the list? Is it just because it’s British? There is a crazy amount of bias for this list for average British artists. This is just terrible.

I don't appreciate grime too much but ain't too bad.

Stupid music.

Meh. Not feeling it

Estilo grime, para mí hip hop. Rollo patatero.

Another album I didn’t need to hear. Never heard of this person and odds are I never will again.

I used to be a massive rap fan but have really fallen out of love with the genre except for a few key artists. This really wasn’t my thing. I can appreciate that he has good flow and some of the beats were cool, but I didn’t add any of the songs to my playlist.

Was cool hearing Queens of the stone age sampled, but otherwise didn't find this album too interesting.

3.5/10

Sounds like competent hip hop. I can't profess to be an expert. The accent throws me. Spittin' bars, but posh.

British rappers be like, "Oi my name is Chauncy G and I hereby decree, Hallo, guv'nor, I fancy me a wee spot of tea."

Vettige beats, klinkt wat agressief. Niet onmiddellijk mijn smaak

By the third track I was trying to understand how this album made the list. It was ok but not something I'll listen to again.

This album /feels/ very 2016, which is too close and crowded with secondhand embarrassment for me that I wince even when the beat’s catchy.

skits on rap albums are classic but you should be able to skip. some raps are meh, some are hits.

-never heard of this guy but im excited! -A SONG WITH PHAREELL WILLIAMS? -these songs are cool, similar beat in each of them so far tho -idk. some of these songs feel a little basic to me -the raps aren’t bad! its just none of these songs are hitting for me -the next song has pharrell williams on it which means i need it to deliver 🙏🏻 -THERE WE GOOOO THIS IS ALL PHARRELL -hate to say this. its a little boring for a pharrell feature -but i have to say! one of the best i’ve heard on the album so far -i have definitely listened to man before and its kinda fire -overall this album is alright. not personally my thing, giving it two stars

So goofy that it’s not a 1

A weird album, not big into the British rap scene Top songs: Crime Riddim, Shutdown

Too much of the skitty interludes.

American rap is just so much better

Me gustó "Crime riddim" y aunque suena bastante bien no me entusiasmó. Interesante como rap UK pero no imprescindible. (también a veces es difícil disfrutar de una música basada en las letras de las canciones sin dominar el idioma)

probably only one song i'd listen to again. I'm unduely annoyed by between-song adlibs, so maybe this just wasn't my day. cool to have some more modern stuff on the list tho. 1.5

I think I might like grime as a genre but I found this particular artist/album repetitive and sometimes sounding like Drake (derogatory). I did like Man and Shutdown.

Thoughts before listening: I think this is British rap although I've never listened to this guy before. I like The Streets and I remember when Dizzee Rascal was a big deal, but other than that I don't know that much about the British hip hop scene. This probably won't be my thing but I'll give it a shot. Review: This is fine. The British accent and slang does make this unique from the American hip hop I am more familiar with. Like with a lot of hip hop albums the skits are dumb and its hard to relate to the lyrics. Overall this probably isn't something I'm going to go back and listen to, but it's okay for what it is. I did add a couple songs to my playlist.

Not for me. I had it on, a lot of it sounded the same.

It made a nice change at first… but became pretty tiresome after a while

UK grime, reminds me of bad London rap, 3/4 finished when reviewed

Estilo grime, para mí hip hop. Rollo patatero.

Was fine, uk rap

I started off liking this more than I expected, but it wore me down and by the end was ready for it to be over. About 30 minutes too long.

After the first track I thought I’d like it, but it wore out its welcome really quickly. Weak, overly repetitive lyrics, forced rhymes, and some of the tracks are so similar I thought they were just continuations of the previous song. The only reason this isn’t lower is because the production is so good.

Man put me off my morning bowl of PussyOs, fam

not bad

Doesn't do much for me.

It's just an album of Need For Speed music

Not for me, every song sounds the same

Didn’t talk to me, for me or even at me. Sayonara.

More like Skeptic.

idk why this is on the list, sounds like generic britrap to me

British drill rap a few too many skits for my taste but fine otherwise 2.5

Scott Kelly plays the N word card

The British "accent" even makes hip hop sound more sophisticated. Still not good though.

The album version of the show Top Boy. Great show, but the album is not doing it for me. Probably 2.5/5 2/5

Þetta er ekkert slæmt. Bara ekkert gott heldur.

Hmm nope

Grime is an hip hop sub-genre that I didn't really know, but it sounds like a more aggressive form of trap, and I'm not a huge fan of that genre, nor this one. So overall, this isn't my cup of tea although the flow was pretty decent, and I did like Shutdown (it felt like an Eminem track).

Not sure why but this album rubbed me the wrong way

British crime rap ain't my bag.

Muzikaal vind ik het nog best boeiend, maar die teksten... Hoe bestaat het toch dat er zoveel mensen dit kunnen pruimen? Dit soort crap is toch niet vol te houden? 'All them girls, they're pretty, they gonna twerk for me, nasty baby please put out that work for me'

Zullen we dit in het vervolg gewoon niet meer doen, jongens? Wel een paar aardige stukjes gehoord maar ik schiet hier gewoon bar weinig mee op.

My only exposure to this before now, was that the track "Shutdown" was in the Tony Hark remaster, and was always an instant skip the second it came on. Blah blah blah, shutdown! Blat blat blat and shutdown! Did some tings and shutdown! Fam, I'm not a fan of grime. It's boring and repetitive, you get me fam? Also the actual content is just dreadful fam. It's dreadful fam! Some of the beats and production are good though, I'll give him that.

endless hooks and chorus. Honestly couldn't wait for the album to be over, longest 45 minutes of my life. If I wanted to listen to hooks all day, I'd go fishing. Also couldn't take it seriously, all I could think about was that "Mans not hot" joke rap.

Sorry but no. I don't even have a favorite track.

Ok album but not my thing

Outside of noticing a queens of the stone age sample this album was just not for me

Ok, Grime. Well, we'll see. First couple of tracks I can appreciate, the flow is good, the words are good. It's just not my thing, man. By track 3 I can't help it, all I can think of is KoreanBilly and his How to Speak Roadman video. https://youtu.be/VV0BB0CxIFk I mean I know this is widely parodied whereas this is presumably authentic for Skepta, but I don't have control here, it's just what my brain does. Crime Riddim is kind of funny. The flat singing in Ladies Hit Squad, is everything I hate about this genre, that part of the sound is like nails down a blackboard for me. Ungggh, oh god I hate it so much. By the time Shutdown come around I'm more or less hating this. Reckon if I heard one or two tracks in isolation I'd like them a lot more. Ah ok. That's Not Me is the best track here by about a billion miles. Cut through all the negativity I'd built up by this point and made me smile and bob my head. This is gonna be a one listen and done, glad I listened to it, glad it's here, not for me, cheers.

par for the course, coarse and overwrought

Has a few nice songs but most of them I couldn't enjoy. Plus the skits are just weird. Highlights: Konnichiwa, Shutdown, That's Not Me

Unfortunately after the excellent little simz album, the British rap albums on this list have gone back to being bad. This isn’t the worst one mostly due to the production but the lyrics are completely unrelatable to me and made me cringe most of the time. There are a couple songs I’d maybe think about possibly listening to again but that’s it.

Just a notch above truly awful

Not a fan.

Hip hop. Convencional. Coñazo.

Mid-2010s rap/hip-hop experiment that aims to mimic the heady beats and poignant themes of its modern contemporaries, but ends up feeling completely lifeless and without a personality of its own as a result.

There are plenty of rappers from Britain with a lot of talent, and I'm not denying Skepta is one of them and that he made a huge impact there. That said, why on earth would I label this album as an "essential" one? Musically, it has rather "barebones" production values, which I get it, was done on purpose to make the whole thing sound raw and authentic. This works out fine on a few tracks here and there, such as "Numbers", or "Crime Riddim (which has a nice... riddim). Nonetheless, and in spite of their rather weird beeps and bloops, a lot of those tracks don't have anything particularly striking to them. Worse, some of the cuts sound incomplete or unfinished, which is quite ironical when you learn how many delays this release went through. To be honest, I predict most of the music on this LP will not age very well anyway. As a matter of fact, the record already sounds older than it really is. And lyrically, well... Skepta has an interesting flow sometimes, but c'mon, some of the rhyming is pretty poor in key parts of this record. Case in point, the title track, where a quarter of the rhymes end with the same little word, "me" (a flaw that also occurs in "That's Not Me", for instance). Ugh. Ego-tripping is an exercise where you need to be sharper and smarter than that. And as far as lyrical hooks, nothing really stands out as well. This thing needs stronger choruses. Without those, the whole experience this grime album offers is a little underwhelming. 2/5 for the purposes of this list gathering "essential" albums, which translates to a 7/10 overall grade (5 + 2). Next, please. Number of albums left to review: 551 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 217 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 105 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 129 (including this one)

I don't get it. 2

I feel bad for the producer(s?) on this album, making such fire beats only for this guy to sing over them about being the baddest dude in London or whatever.

- Something about it feels try hard - Middle-school level of trying to sound tough - A few solid beats and he has good flow

British street rap. Ok.

This was fun, but forgettable.

oh god, supaboring

A wild ride going from 'Close To The Edge' to this one. Skepta is cool and all, but Konnichiwa is a bit unfocused. Interludes drag and most of the tracks are forgettable. 'Shutdown' and 'That's Not Me' are absolute bangers though.

Really not memorable or that impressive

That accent is far too fucking much. Modern rap is shit, at least the stuff on the radio. Rap from the UK is shit. Skits in songs are shit. At least it only went for 45min. 2/5.

One of my least fond genres of music, this continues that trend as It made me wander what they were saying and repeating "quick maffs" in my head again and again in equal measure.

Sayonara.

Man, I had high hopes for this one. This album is perfect for blasting after a workday in Londontown and pre gaming at a pub before heading to see Jersey Boys on the big stage. The Numbers just don’t add up for me. It’s mostly because of the Lyrics, I’ve heard dozens of albums that are a more creative on the wordsmithing. But I guess that’s the vibe they’re going for. Not even Pharrell could save this record for me. Some of the beats get my hype, but the overall feel of the album…that’s just not me. I’m going on a Detox of Skepta.

I really wanted to enjoy this more than I did. The lyrics are weirdly literal, on my first listen I was catching some good lines but upon re-listens it felt silly. The beats are pretty 'hype' as the kids would say, but I'm an old man and those damn kids need to get off my lawn.

It was ok

Not a big fan.

man (that's) not hot. Kilka razy już próbowałem brytyjskiej sceny rapowej i jakoś jeszcze nie trafiłem na coś co by mi przypadło do gustu. Może to przez ich akcent.

Familiar with skepta but first time listening to this album. I’m not a fan of grime/U.K. rap with a couple of exceptions. So this one really didn’t do much for me.

Didn’t hate it but also not for me

Very odd dynamic. Like someone not gansta trying to be gansta. Just ok for me.

Not my cup of tea!

While I love the accent, the rapping style lacked musicality and didn't really mesh with the music - that and the simplistic beats made it sound very amateurish

It was fine. Sounded pretty juvenile with the talks about blasting in the face and swearing that adds nothing to the music.

Cool beats and vibes to this sound. But I can’t get behind lyrics talking about blasting someone’s face off. I just can’t.

Its decent enough. Nothing special, though

Nicht so meins aber ist jz nicht schlecht

Kind of corny sounding British rap

1001 albums and no MF DOOM. Smh... I thought this was gonna be a racist album double feature after the first track. British rap man... Pretty rough. Every song no matter how tough it sounded I couldn't help but think of British rap memes. (https://youtu.be/Kw3y1LoUybI?is=N6Ka9Yfp63rajxYx). If the production was good I couldn't tell, every song sounds like a takedown/flex/diss track which sucks. Favorite(s): Least: Numbers Detox 1/5

The echoey piano in the title track is uninspired. Actually pretty much all of the percussion and samples are super uninspired. The blao blao airhorn is a funny sound, but basically every sound including that one sounds like it was just dragged into the timeline from a default FL Studio sample pack. No further production except making it more grating. To be fair, I think some music ends up over-produced. I had a tendency to over-produce in some of my music classes. To be fair, I think some "just use the default" stuff is really good. The stardew valley soundtrack is mostly just default synths and samples. But everything is arranged in a much more interesting way than what I'm seeing here. So because of stardew's strengths, the default sounds come across as endearing. On this album, it comes across as boring and lazy. Bro thinks he's biggie 💀 doing a phone recording thing on corn on the curb. Cringe. Idk man, this sounds like a YouTube diss track. Like idubbbz or something. His flow is okay. It's never very impressive. It's never very artful. It's never very catchy. It's just okay. Genuinely unlistenable at times. It ain't safe is ear-grating. I imagine my listening experience on this one is similar to y'all's experience watching Don's Plum. "Getting laffy taffy with the hoes" kinda goes hard tho. "Ladies Hit Squad" tries something at least a little bit with the mree mree thing. Unfortunately, it sounds awful. It's annoying. "Don't eat pussy? Liar, you're just a actor." (Sopranos reference) Waait Sopranos diss tracks would be awesome. Chrissy rapping about Ton' would be aaaawesome. W: numbers L: corn on the curb, it ain't safe 1/5

British rap gets me as excited as lint in a washing machine

A British rapper trying to be gangsta? I don’t think I care.

Rough. I know this album. This genre is not for me. Detox and Text Me Back were fine. One star, this just isn't for me and I didn't like it. I also couldn't find anything positive about it for me. Whatever this influenced is also not for me.

I don't think I had any British rappers prior to starting this list. I evidently hate British rap, or maybe I just hate Grime. This album is slightly better than the other I have heard. 1.5

If you have a British accent, just don't rap. Please

Boring and terrible in my opinion

Nice try Skepta

No thanks

terrible

For me, rap needs to have an interesting beat and/or interesting lyrics, and this album for me had neither. I am very fond of British rappers' voices though. It adds a lovely texture to an otherwise boring album. Rating: 1.5

ostras qué pedazo de mierda

mans bars wack, features worse beats were kinda cool but shallow overall very generic also gets -1 point for the weeb-ass title lmao

Rap with a British accent is somewhat interesting. But after the initial novelty, I could not wait for this to end. Do not reccomend.

Zum kotzen wie ein modriges Sushi. Kling klang und Acid .

Had to turn this off after 5 tracks because I felt I was about to be stabbed. Again I returned to Sabres Of Paradise for safer sanctuary.

Not for me

definitely not for me

This started out as a 2 star just because of the genre that I don't like. The really excessive irritating low frequency distorted synth drums definitely on so many of the songs. The first song that had that definitely locked in the 2 star rating but that low frequency crap just kept showing up so much so that I had to finally stop listening (never got to the last three songs). That's a first for me after 500 albums on this journey so it definitely belongs in the worst albums category.

Under no circumstance should you let the English cook dinner or make a rap album.

Not for me

Terrible

Went from listening to a Kanye West produced RnB album, full of tasteful samples and intricate lyrics, to this shit. Wow. I hate grime. How the fuck did this beat Radiohead and David Bowie?? The singles off of this are laughable. Even the track featuring Pharrrell was disappointing. 1/5

How can anyone listen to this stuff 1

Another tiresome rinse and repeat hip hop album that lyrically doesn't feature any new interesting stories. Instead it relies on the same old complaints (that are largely ignorant ,I might add) about Western society, and self indulgent narcissism. Engages in the same old tired skits that everyone wishes hip hop would on from at this point. The album content has nothing to do with Japanese culture. The only thing cliche that Skepta avoided successfully was keeping the album a nice an tidy 44 minutes long and not the hip hop standard of 1 hour+. While I don't think BLACKSTAR was David Bowie's best album ever, I do think it was miles more interesting than KONNICHIWA. Just keeps showing that the British Mercury Awards are largely a joke. This album is not rated low not because it is not American but because it is boring and doesn't add anything truly new to the hip hop genre or move music itself forward.

Mikið hrikalega finnst mér svona græmtónlist leiðinleg. Alltof mikill þykjusturembingur og mjög lítill blæbrigðamunur í lögunu.

No thank you

Not for me

Day832 - grime is a new one for me and it’s as bad as it sounds

Gross. Gratuitous use of the N word is just not my thing.

Music is not bad, but I don't like rap, and how he raps

Very simple music and typical lyrics

trap is shit. if i could give zero stars i would. 0/5

I'm not the target audience for this album

Meh. I'm glad that's over. At first I thought, ok, I can get through this, it's not too horrible, but as it went on I started hating it more and more. ⭐⭐

I feel the list is trolling with these English rap albums. There is nothing interesting or unique on this album. The only thing that stood out is how many times they could use "fam" in one skit.

Now, let me pour my whole soul out on this one. This. This is not only the worst album I've heard on this list, this is quite possibly the worst fucking album I've ever heard in my entire life, and so far I heard around 1600-1700 albums in full. Or more. I cannot think of any other album I hated this much. I wanted it over the first song. It has no redeeming qualities. It is so fucking miserable. Can he just shut the fuck up? Can he just stop? Stop. It's. Fucking. Horrible. Horrendous. Disgusting. I cannot express how shocked I am that someone could make such a fucking worthless thing. I am sorry if I am being too harsh, I really am (to other users of this site, not to the artist himself), but I am just so done with this, it's unlistenable and this 40+ minutes were NOT fun, not even close. This should not be on this list. No matter how influential it was for gangsters of the big UK, I do not care, it's terrible.

Interesting opener. I kinda like Man, Shutdown, and It Aint Safe even if I’ll probably never listen to them again. Other than that, everything else is kind of abysmal. Awful even. I fail to see what’s so must listen about this album so I’m surprised this is included on this 1001 albums list.

love the beats but i cant do british rap the flow is always the same and just overshadows the beat too much...

I had never heard a rapper with a British accent and I was ok with that.

Sounds fire on mute 🔇🔇🔇 Go on fam ✌️😭

Sorry, don't like rap.

crap rap - not my thing

Grime gruel.

not around here partner

Repetitive and a waste of my time.

Nah, thanks though.

Well... okay. It was horrid. And it just gets worse and worse. Maybe because it's so so boring, but also because the songs... well, I guess if you like rap you will like them, but, for me, they are all the same. It's the same thing all the time but with different repetitive instrumental bases. And, yes, bases, because there is neither an interesting instrumental part on the album at all.

Not a rap fan

Rap album. A no from me.

Rap and Hip Hop not in my wheel house. And simply can not listen to. Tried but a big no.

nope. didn't enjoy this, it's vulgar and non-melodic. don't hear how it's relevant for this list (but who am I), nothing new here.

i cannot do british rappers

Not today. 1

No thanks.

Why on earth was this on this list

Two plus two is four, minus three that’s one quick maths

I’m not finishing this bro

That was quite annoying. Rap that doesn't seem to go anywhere. Most of the instrumentation is annoying. Conversations slapped onto on songs.

I realize that I’m not the demographic for this, but pretty much every song sounded identical to me, interesting for about 1 minute.

i really can’t do uk rap

Couldn't finish, didn't like this or the skits they'd have in between each track

Absolute crap

1/5. Did not like the lyrics. Melodically and rhythmically uninspired. Though I did like the audio sample in Shutdown - “Black men dancing aggressively on TV, I’m so intimidated, I just don’t expect this on daytime television.” But overall I felt annoyed throughout. One more thought scares me; someone out there listens to this and thinks they’re a badass for it. And that scares me

Totally not my style

Wasn’t for me

Hip hop was a genre that I hated as a child. I was a rock kid, later even prog kid I'm afraid. A little snob for lack of better words. It took me a few years to admit I like some hip hop song around and even more to accept it as the glorious art form it is. Since than some of my favorite albums of all times have been hip hop record, and I am a big fan and admirer of the greats. This album is so, so, so incredibly bad. The beats are unimaginative, production is so lame and sad. I couldn't find even one memorable hook, as hard as they try nothing sticks (which makes it even sadder). Lyrics are laughable. Not in a good way. They're fucking bad. Not funny, not clever. Just bad. In the end I couldn't believe I listen to the entire thing. It made me question the genre itself. Wow. There could be no justification for it being one this list. And any awards it got have me astounded. Beating Radiohead's AMSP and Bowie's Blackstar? No fucking way. That was one of the worst so far. 0. Impossible, so...

Pretty dull

Just can't stand Brittish rap

It’s so bad I couldn’t help but laugh. Maybe it was meant to be a comedy album all along.

The beats seemed simple and uninspired. The lyrics didn't add much. Some real low lows on this one.

Boring, and repetitive. Probably a 2 star except for the god awful skits.

I'm glad I don't hear this sort of shit on a daily basis anymore.

Is this supposed to be a joke. This album cannot be here on this list. It is only terrible and boring and horrible. No one should have to listen to this. And the main question is: Why is the album on this list?

Rap ain't my thing, there was one song that was ok Shutdown had a cool bit of rhythm

Same old, same old. Feel like I've heard identical lyrics, scenarios, gripes and boasts from a 1,000 rappers going back 30 years. Nothing new and just as lame. Fave Tune = Impossible to choose between some of the worst "song" i've heard. Gives Ghostface Killah a run for his money.

I guess we’re adding grime to the list of hip-hop sub-genres that I can’t stand. How in the hell did this beat out Blackstar for the Mercury Prize?

Rubbish!

443/1001 🌕🌗🌑🌑🌑

A painful chore. Somewhat interesting beats & production going on in the background, but lyrically, it's mainly just 44 minutes of mind-numbing self-aggrandizement. I've heard it all so many times before. Does this guy know that there is nothing original about anything he's saying? I guess he just doesn't have any other thoughts inside his brain, apart from how cool he finds himself. Pretentious, ugly attitude. And I will say there is indeed some hip hop on this list I have enjoyed. Luckily not all hip hop is as annoying as this (although we all know how inflated the egos of many hip hop artists are).

Terrible rap album

I hate british rap

Not for me.

Konnichiwa in my ass! Soronoo sanon minä! Pska albumi 💩

I'm sure I'm missing conext and other genre examples. But what I can say is I try often. British Rap does literally nothing to me except cause confusion to me. Because on one hand I hear direct rip offs of American rap culture, all whilst being told that this example is cutting edge or unique to England. This album is a miss, clunky flow, rapid fire onomatopoeia's about guns, chains, cars, and drugs. Boring one dimensional beats that sound like they were made in garage band by a young producer. Nothing here screams exemplary rap. I might just be an American Rap Elitist. But I tried it, perhaps this is a stand out in England and I'm missing said context. I'll continue to try my hand at other examples.

This is the only album I will rate without listening to. I have heard Skepta singles on the radio and grime in general. 1.

Weak rhymes. Very moon, June, spoon. Weak beats. Nothing memorable or impressive. Weak lyrics. Nothing said or conveyed that hasn't been said 1,000 (1,001?) times before. I usually try to find something to appreciate even if an album isn't for me, but I'm struggling with this one.

Not into so much boasting, he's really not that interesting

Wow, this sucked really hard.

This album took 5 years of production to release, and probably needed another 5. I'm not sure if I just don't get it, but I found the verses bad, the beats boring, the skits awful, and the overall core of the album shallow and uninteresting. There was nothing here for me.

UK rappers be like she suck on my willy it’s quite delightful if I catch you in west Gloucestershire you’ll catch the rifle

British rap is low key embarrassing

Absolutely awful, I can barely stand to listen to this. That being said, I really don't get any Grime, or any British hip-hop, for that matter, so maybe it's exemplary within it's genre. I don't want to seem like I'm "gatekeeping" or something like that, but emcee-ing in a British accent just doesn't sound right, and I cannot take Skepta seriously at all. He sounds utterly ridiculous and like he takes himself far more seriously than he should. I would consider this album to be a strong contender for worst on the entire list.

UK rap.... not good

I never enjoyed listening to UK rap ever since it rose to prominence in recent years. Therefore, you could imagine the immense disappointment I felt as I realized that's what this album is.

Ugh. This ain't for me.

Jag vill slita bort varenda nagel med tång på författaren. Jag vill doppa honom i flytande stearin och därefter sänka honom på det djupaste stället i Ålands hav.

I knew this was going to be a British album as soon as I didn't recognize the artist. Exceptionally mediocre.

Started off interesting and I was intrigued as I don’t think I’ve ever listened to grime, but as it went on, it started to wear thin and then the skits started. Skits bring down any album for me.

Hard hard hard NO. Horrible. 0.5/5

A tough listen. Cringe, bad man rap for small minded gangster wannabes. Nothing else I can say. Apple Music ranked THIS as their No.1 album of 2016… sheesh!

Weitere Arbeiten erfolgten in den Miloco-Studios The Bunker und The Square. Das Album enthält mehrere bekannte Tracks, darunter "That's Not Me", "Shutdown", "Man" und "Ladies Hit Squad".

Yet another regrettable entry in the undeserving, WAY over-represented rap/hip hop genre.

Blind album and artist. TIL about grime, style of hip hop, which is am not a huge fan of, or at least this artist and/or album.

1. konichiuua - 1.5 2. lyricz - 1.5 3. corn - 2 4. crime - 1 5. zafe - 1.5 6. ladiez - 1 7. numberz - 1.5 8. man - 1.5 9. zhut - 0 10. me - 1 11. detoz - 0 12. tezt - 1.5

LMAO look up the video "RZA unironically creates a terrible beat for a Guitar Center promo", there is a lot of overlap with that beat and Crime Riddim. The fact that this album reminded me of that video is hilarious and I can't even remotely take this seriously anymore. I understand why some people like this, but I just don't like Grime. The UK are really good at making rock music and that is about it. Whenever they try to branch out to other genres it always sounds a little lame. I just don't think the British accent fits rap at all. A lot of the beats are also pretty annoying, I'm pretty sure that overused airhorn sound effect was in its ironic phase in 2016. I'm also not a huge fan of his flow, he makes ever song sound the same, and it has a lyrical spiritual kinda vibe. Every synth he used for the rest of the album just made me laugh, because I just kept thinking about that stupid video. Specifically the part right before he adds the doorbell sound effect. Skepta is trying so hard but it just sounds so weak. Ok, so I don't think this is the worst album ever in the grand scheme of music, but in terms of this list, this is one of my least favorite albums so far. Ever song sounds like a joke song or a parody of real rap music, those synths sound terrible, it is way too tryhard, I don't like his flow, I was starting to get a headache, It was a slog to get through. Despite those complaints it isn't the worst album ever, I just feel like it is the bottom of the list and I don't give enough 1's so here we go. High 1.

British people simply should not be allowed to rap.

Hip Hop. 1/5

I’m offended I had to listen to this album. Years ago I listened to another grime album Boy in the Corner by Dizziee Rascal and was underwhelmed by the heavy staccato beats battering my ears. This is no exception. Ba ba, ba ba ba ba, boom! It wears me out. I can imagine hearing this on a sweaty dance floor after downing a dozen Ridley Brown Ales, but those days are far behind. This is an album someone might put on a list knowing there are far better rap albums in order to appear edgy and cool. It’s not.

Not my thing

A little EDM, a little rap, a little dancehall shoved in. The fact is, I don't see how this sonically builds on Dizzee Rascal's foundations (his debut album Boy in da Corner is also on the list). They are siblings rather than spawn of. Also, I thought the days of skits on albums were behind us?! Overall: 1/10

absolutely not my kind of music, had to skip

I'm not a fan of most other hip-hop, let alone some unknown (to me) British shit. A lot of repetition in these tunes, I could see where it could end up being catchy. For the most part, I find these songs way more cringey.

Tried to give it a chance, nah, not for me.

I try not to speak towards grime or British rappers when I say: this was shit. Just absolutely abysmal. It’s all repetitive garbage with some of the most annoying vocals I heard. I really don’t want to pin it on Skepta being British, but… God I couldn’t stand his voice. And he’s just rapping the same lyrics over and over again. If I hear “It ain’t safe for the block, not even for the cops again”, I’m going to snap. And what the fuck is with the skits? You’re fucking seriously putting shit like a phone conversation and a fucking exchange between you and some salty fuck over a game of Call of Duty (or whatever fucking shooter was popular at the time)? What is this, the 80’s? De La Soul did this with that game show on 3 Feet and Rising in fucking 1989 and that was miles better. I don’t want to lump an entire music genre into one bad experience. There’s probably better grime albums out there. But this ain’t it. “Favorite” track: Ladies Hit Squad (because there are two buffers, I mean guest vocalists) Other hits: Numbers, sort of. It’s still annoying.

Uhhhh yeah, not my thing for a whole album. Grime is cool, though.

Music for the dullard

I'm sure this is good, but it's not for me.

Hip hop

Nope, don't like rap

absolutely terrible. we got like 10 minutes in and was already sick of it. i will never understand how this type of UK rap has shooters

Lyrics weren’t great production also meh

Artiste inconnu. 24 eme album de Hip Hop => 1/5
