7/10
Pretty good 90s album some memorable tunes
Eh
Punky. Very punky, in a good way. Resonated pretty well with me this morning, so I'm giving it 3 stars.
Not awful, but wasn't my thing. Energetic, worth a listen but won't get multiple replays from me.
Scratches many of my aesthetic itches. Good stuff all around, though it lacks a standout track to my ear and isn't unique on a texture level. I'm optimistic about the second LP, and imagine that this will be playlist material at some point.
It's okay, punky and sarcastic with some nice riffs but nothing hugely impressive, 2/5
Why does it continue to give me bullshit Some cool stuff The song waking up worst guitar tone I’ve ever heard
This is yet another British 2* album that doesn't belong on this list. It should be removed and replaced with the Def Tones' White Pony, which is a clear 4*.
Yet another boring album
No standout songs to revisit but a fine listen.
Good pop rock but nothing particularly compelling
Britpop slop
Punk feminino nessa época é surpreendente, mas a sonoridade não me agrada.
Not terrible, but pretty boring/generic.
Not a fan. It’s ok. Background music.
meh. this kinda sucked
I just didn't enjoy this - fully expected to and I'm not quite sure why.
Meh. 2/5
2.5
This album is a Double Dutch champion - skip after skip after skip after skip after skip. It just keeps going. Pop rock gone wrong. Some fun instrumental work saves it from the bottom basement, however.
This was just ok. Heard the big song a lot (maybe too much) in the 90s. Not awful. Not great. 2.75
Fun but a bit bland when you get into it. First track sounds like a straight rip of a blur tune and the rest of the album has a bit of a fake brit-pop sheen that just feels like a plastic wrap on a pretty average CD.
Se me hizo bland la vdd, la única q me gustó fue Never here y creo q fue pq ya se iba a acabar el álbum 🗣️
meh, mostly skips
Yeah that’s pretty generic indie rock circa 1990s, carrying and copying the sound of the previous British pop punk (post/art punk whatever) bands, except it’s a very limited in scope and pretty dull example at that, and seems lots of plagiarism claims at the time. Remember them vaguely from back then, and more around who she hung around with. Absolutely no reason to have heard again since and definitely didn’t move the needle today, done so much better with better songs by others, next. 2 Star
It’s fine but we have Blur and Pixies at home.
I know and own Connection. I didn’t know any other songs on this. It was fine. I didn’t love any of the other songs. It was fine background music. Never need to hear it again.
Classic sound for connection but no staying power. Better versions of this album are out there
It's just kind of meh. Like, mostly throughout the album. S.O.F.T. had some nice guitar, and I loved the tabla in Indian Song. But nothing really got all that interesting. Best song: S.O.F.T.
Not terrible. Not memorable.
This band was briefly a big deal on MTV and I'm still not sure why, and even less sure why this album is on the list
ooozin with snoozin
This sounded fine, and did nothing for me. Good job or whatever
2.
Thought I'd like this one, but it's a bit of a slog. There were some shorter songs and I enjoyed those more. The longer songs were boring and didn't do very much. 2.49/5
Thoughts before listening: 90s one hit wonder female led band. That one hit is really good, but I don't think I know the rest of this album. Review: So that hit is "Connection" and it's good. Not something that would make me want to buy the album, but definitely a solid hit. The rest of the album is basically in the same 90s poppy alt rock vein albeit with a bit of a Blondie/Go Gos girl group sheen. Not sure it deserves to be on this list although I bet this was a bigger deal in Europe than the US. For me, I'd rather something like Sponge or the Toadies made the list if we're adding largely forgotten 90s one hit alt rock bands. 2-stars
Pretty generic sounding, repetitive and not very enjoyable. I've heard worse but this was just meh.
I like the influences and sound here, but it gets very repetitive and very boring really quickly, so no more than 2 stars - probably. No real desire to keep relistening this sadly.
Generic, 5/10
Reminds me of post-1990 running music in rom-coms.
It was okay. Not as good as I would have hoped. Only one or two with the trouble
Boring. This seems dated even for 95.
Eh
p760. 1995. 2 stars. Generic mid 90s Britpop, and probably on the list for the token female band tick for each genre. Well done of its kind, but far too derivative of Wire to deserve anything other than 2 stars.
It wasn't bad at all, it was just kind of generic? Didn't mind listening but I'm not sure what makes it special
No
Boring voice and music, more like a background noise.
Not bad but nothing special. Another "it doesn't need to be in the list" album
Derivative.
It's sounds exactly like the girl rock band from the 80's but at least 10 years too late.
The Buzzcocks are clever. These guys not so much.
Exceptionally generic. At its best, it sounds like ads for cliched cleaning product commercials.
Utterly forgettable.
1/21 90's Britpop. Nothing really stood out to me unfortunately
Has it moments of grabbing my attention here and there but otherwise not a lot of what Im personally looking for.
Boring 90s alt rock. And I like 90s alt rock. They had one radio track on the album and the rest feels like filler. I'd like to like it, but it's just too... meh.
Aside from the 2 more well-known tracks I was disappointed. The remaining tracks were just filler, no real substance. I never took much notice of Elastica in my 20's, other than stroking a few out to the lead singer, when they first arrived on the scene. Maybe I should myself credit for my musical taste in my 20's.
not my fave but a good album
Meh
Listen again
Your average britpop band from the 1001challenge.
A few songs on this album i really enjoyed. Unfortunately for me the whining guitar sound the kept using really made the other songs quite bad. If I could enjoy that part the album would be rated much higher.
It’s nice enough, and I do have a love of this genre. “Connection” was super cool, and still is. But the rest of the album just doesn’t match its energy for me.
Ysäri tuoksuu vahvasti mutta jää levy aika pliisuksi. Jotenkin näitä jostain syystä aina vertailee garbagen parhaaseen tuotantoon ja siks jättää kylmäksi.
Pikakelauksella läpi, tällästä shittiä on ollut jo monta levyä aiemmin. Laitetaan kakkonen hassujen melodioiden kunniaksi, muuten silkkaa shaissea
Aika geneeristä shitsiä taas, ei houkuttele uudelleenkuunteluun.
-oooo a 90s album finally -um okay weird noises in line up -it’s fine i guess not really my sound though -connection is my fav so far -all these songs sound the same at least they are short -legit the same songs over and over -all nothingburger yawn
Nice sound and good pace but more than one listen needed to distinguish tracks and get more into it.
меня не зацепило, сорри.
**An ok album, too much screaming vocals and screeching instruments
Nja
It’s 90s female vocal (britpop?). Best left to Oasis/Blur etc.
I owned this CD back in 1995, but don’t recall anything about it except for Connection. This is so generically 90s. It’s bland and boring and unexceptional. 2
Is this two all-female punk records in sight of a week? Only a push of the play button will tell. Also a google search could tell. Although people on the internet call Deep Purple the first metal band, so maybe listening for myself is the way to go. Who knows. I am behind, let’s make like an elastic band and hurt myself when I snap it. I don’t know anymore. Line Up - Hmm. Not punk. Kind of like Hole. Annie - This thing rips along pretty good. Hell yeah. Repetitive but scratches the right itch or whatever. Good stuff. Connection - Was this in a phone commercial? It awoke a thirst for either nationwide 3G coverage or well-fitting jeans. I can’t decide. Car Song - A song about a car. Or a song about a person with a car. Or maybe, the real car was the friends we made along the way You be the judge. Smile - I hate when songs try to tell me what to do. Hold Me Now - See previous track. S.O.F.T - I thought it was S.A.W.F.T? Can’t teach that. God that guy turned out to be a complete moron and probable sexual abuser. Whooda thunk it? Indian Song - What about this song is Indian? Do I even want to know? Blue - Smurf All-Nighter - Is this describing the record? Waking Up - This will be me in about 5 more songs. 2:1 - I’ve never understood aspect ratio. I’ve always struggled spatially (yes that can work as a fat joke if you wish), but what in the sweet hell are these nerds talking about? I think it’s a universal rule, that the more you understand something, the less you enjoy it. See That Animal - Yeah that 4 ton walrus over there. Looks pretty immobile hey? WRONG. He mauled six zookeepers last year. They never found their bones. Stutter - Ughhhhhhh Never Here - I know once this is over, this album will vanish from my mind like it was indeed, “Never Here” Vaseline - Some excellent product placement takes us out of the beige gruel that we have been mired in for a few hours. Oh brother. This was borrring. This felt like corporation approved girl rock to market to dumb 90’s dudes. Apparently a good chunk of it was ripped off as well from a band called “The Wire.” Man I miss that show. This might be the kind of the music that appears on a Sony sampler disc. For the record, this wasn’t the worst thing I’ve put myself through here, but it was one of the more forgettable things that wasn’t 90’s Britpop. Oh god unless it was??? 1.5-2 HIGHLIGHTS: Annie I guess?
The Good: We know this music is going to bend! The Bad: Turns out it bends the wrong way… The Ugly: album = artist name… I will say this, it is nice to have a bunch of <3 minute songs on an album. It is punky, so there’s that… However, I didn’t care for Suede, and I don’t care for Elastica. If singer-lady would have really cared for music, she would not have given it up for art, to eventually marry a professor of meteorology… I mean, seriously? Fucking Dimery could’ve chosen a couple of the awesome bands of the early/mid-90s that were dominating US college radio stations, but alas, hardly any of those are represented on this list… instead, I got to waste another day hoping to find something great to add to my collection. 2* because I am starting to HATE 90s alternative british bands...
FAVO: Waking Up
Bleh blah bluh
80s grrl rock. Not bad. Not my jam
Hmm
I remember seeing this cover in the past without knowing about the album and thinking it was some kind of new-wave punk album from the late '70s, and now that I've listened to it I can say that it sounds like some kind of new-wave punk album from the late '70s too, then afterwards I check the reviews and everyone's saying they ripped off a post-punk band from the late '70s and I'm glad we're all on the same page I don't know where the Britpop comes in but maybe that's just my lack of understanding the genre Ultimately it seems like it succeeds in being a decent album from 1979 that was some kind of foundational cult classic for its time except it's actually from 1995 and I don't really find the appeal for myself Living proof that the past does exist in the event that a nanomachine uprising targets and destroys all traces of pre-1990 music on Earth
Pretty boring and generic sounding punk album that got off to a really bad start with whatever groaning or whatever that was in the first song
It was alright
5 - MEDIUM
Mostly pop-ey sounds from this one. Not my jam though I could see how if you were raised with this band you could look at this back fondly. The post-punk tracks break up the monotony of an otherwise pretty mid experience. I see how the lyrics could be controversial and challenging for a contemporary pearl-clutching British censor, but it does not really translate to me.
boring alternative rock that doesnt really seperate themselves from other entries on this list.
The same old alt rock. The same old yawn inducing guitar riffs. The same old album we’ve had a bunch of times already
So, why is this on the list? It's not an awful album or anything, but even in 1995 this sound was extremely dated. Nothing stands out, although I can at least say it's consistently below average.
Very generic.
Angsty female brit punk rock with a bit of brit pop
Not bad but so similar as so many oil this era. Album changed to other artist and I didn't even notice
Sounds like all the brit rock I've ever heard with slight variations. Not bad, mostly boring and uninteresting.
The whole album was a little bit meh, nothing too exciting, but definitely listenable. It was fine having it in the background though, and things weren't that bad overall.
I mean, sure. Why not put everything on the list. No idea what I'm meant to find here.
I really don't think this does much beyond the artists that came before. The vocals are getting stepped on. I know the song Connection, tho I don't find it exceptional.
Nope. Far too ordinary to be part of this list, in my opinion.
British 90s Punk I like: Cool sound design. Connection is good and catchy (Hahahah it was in the FNAF movie) Dislike: I don't like punk music, it's not my thing. The Jagged, buzzy guitar tone bothers me. "Sounds basic and not my taste, 2/5"
Some grand tunes here, but overall probably a "you had to be there" kind of situation.
I wish they leaned more into a harder punk sound rather than trying to sound like no doubt lite
Wire did it better
Not my cup of tea but can absolutely see their influence on later music. Seems to me they must have inspired acts like Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc.
Fine
I never heard Elastica back in the day and didn't know their "hits." Some tunes were pretty good, but I doubt I'll listen to it again
Was never that bothered by Elastica. Connected, waking up and 2:1 all good tracks but they still fail to really excite and i struggle to pinpoint why.
This is like the fluff you add to an essay you're writing for a class you don't care about - you have 400 words and you need 600 more, so you add this and hope for the best. British bias of the author coming in again. Made me wonder - was this book written for a British or an international audience? If the former, 1001 albums you (as a Brit) must listen to before you die would explain the inclusions on this list a lot better. The Brits make great music, but there's a whole world of music out there that seems to be overlooked in this list because of the need to include all his local favourites. Oh well.
Bla
As generic as generic rock gets
The introduction was pretty ass to start off the album. It got better though but not nearly enough that it changed my perception of this. There are some decent tracks on here but the listening experience as a whole just felt forgettable. I liked the vocals, the production was fine, and the lyrics did nothing for me. I wish it had more to offer in terms of variety because at least then I wouldn't have been so bored listening to this. Top 3: Car Song, S.O.F.T, and Stutter Worst: Line Up and lots of mid to top it off 2.25-2.50/5
Ehh, didn't really do it for me.
This album is like remembering the time you drove to work last week, to a job that you feel indifferent about. You woke on a cold morning and didn’t really want to get out of your cozy bed. Still half asleep, you knock back a black coffee to jolt yourself awake before brushing your teeth. Still bleary-eyed and drowsy, you set off. Nothing really unique or memorable happened on the drive, but you did get to work.
generalnie EHHH zas posiada kilka calkiem milych momentow
++: Line Up, Car Song, Hold Me Now, Indian Song, Stutter +: Connection, Smile, Waking Up, 2:1, Vaseline +-: Annie, Blue, All-Nighter, Never Here -: S.O.F.T. 5,0/10
It's a mix of British Pop, and Punk Rock, and it's just...bleh. I couldn't get into it, as much as I tried, but it wasn't the worst thing in world either. Favorite Track: "Indian Song".
A $2.99 used rack classic.
I absolutely did not "need" to listen to this album before I die. It's fine. But like....come on. 2/5
Not punk enough, not pop enough, not rock enough.
Can someone tell the 90s there are more instruments than the guitar? More punk slop - this list's bias for mid guitar albums will be the death of me!
- catcht mich mal wieder nicht so richtig, klingt an sich aber relativ moody. Weiß immer nicht, was ich solchen Alben geben soll. Für mich irgendwo zwischen 2-3 / 5 eher aber in der Nähe der 2/5
I only needed 3 songs - nothing was making this any better than a 2
I don't know how I feel about the vomit sounds in the first song (I do, I'm just being polite)
tava achando mediano ai só passei a achar ruim....
A pretty weak alt rock/post punk album. Some OK moments but generally this was not an ultra enjoyable listen. 2/5
Some really fun drums (here and there) and occasionally good singing. Very “stale beer in a basement in the 90s.” Otherwise, completely forgettable. Maybe im missing something, but id rather listen to a million other things. Tg for this project for educating me to not fall for this one. TWO!
another typical boring british punk album
“Connection” is an excellent song, the rest is eh
It was ok. I can see how it was liked during its time but it’s not my cup of tea.
I listened to this this morning and I have since entirely forgotten it
Even if you're the biggest fan of this sort of music, surely even you cannot justify why this album is on this list. It's so generic, so samey, and so incredibly boring. Listen to the first two or three songs, you'll get the gist of it
Pretty generic 90's music... not horrible, but a lot of the same. Maybe a 2.5? Round down to a 2, because I don't really get why its on this list.
Nah
Boring
Bad
Postpunk with a female singer. Pretty much generic.
High 2 Some good songs (soft, waking up, never here) But a lack of diversity
I remember listening to this at time of release because music press were going barmy about them and this album. Just sounded like late 70’s punk and certainly not to the same standard of Britpop around at the same time. So I quickly dismissed it back then as I do today after today’s listen. 2/5 28/4/25
2,5
Ok 2/5
Fun riffs, very very catchy band...I lose it with the lyrics, not great.
A beautiful thing about the "1001 albums you have to hear before you die" book is how you'll see an album and think "How did this manage to make its way here?". I think the rating speaks the rest. ⭐⭐
I heard good things about this album before so I was disappointed after I finished listening to it - it is just too generic, samey, and I don't really like the singer's voice either. I recognised some hits but otherwise it is not really my thing.
Meh. Singles are okay - rest is very average. Never really got the hype.
This was fine. I liked some songs, I didn't really care for others, but nothing was really fantastic or distinguishable from any other 90s alt/grunge/rock. I feel like I heard one of these songs in an episode of some 30-minute sitcom in 1996. I'd throw one or two songs on a playlist in the future and enjoy it, but I don't need to listen to the full album again.
Meh
Correcto
Not really my cup of tea.
It is fine but I will probably forget about them in 12 minutes and never listen to this again.
I kind of liked the single, but listening to it in the context of the album I was thinking the whole thing was maybe a 3, then I was reminded that this is in the context of album’s you should listen to before you die…
In one of those odd coincidences that this list throws up, today’s album is from Elastica who were fronted by Justine Frischmann who was half of a Britpop power couple with Damon Albarn and thus indirectly responsible for him writing two of the most self pitying and mawkish breakup songs of all time when they inevitably split up. Anyhoo, as the saying goes this album is both good and original. However, the parts that are good aren’t original and vice versa. Albarn makes a guest appearance on this on a couple of tracks and was caught out shamelessly ripping off a riff from Wire on the track Connection. The non-Albarn tracks are a bit better, but there are clear similarities to the New York punk sound of the Ramones and especially Blondie on the track Vaseline. As with Blur, I really wanted to like this, but in the end it swung and missed for me.
Lukewarm, very lukewarm, uninteresting, I would never listen to it again.
dull dull dull
Solid, but nothing that stuck with me.
..
Bad rock music.
Must say that this was quite lacking of an identity for me. All songs just fell completely flat for me, didn't manage to find a single song that I enjoyed. Not even their supposed hit, 'Connection'. In addition, it sounded like something that could've been made during the early 80s, but turned out to come from '95. Not sure why it didn't click. Probably just wasn't my thing at all.
Like when i find a book I don't want to finish, this one took a long time to get through. It just feels so generic. Not sure why it bores me, the sound is ok, has attitude and the type of music i generally like. But there still is no hook in the album. Tried listening to it on multiple occasions and it just blended in to the background.
Generally pretty good kinda upbeat punk rock
Stimme sind ächli flach. Es Album mit äme punkige Aafang und Ändi, dezwüsched ehner popig. Spontan tönts wienäs Erstlingswärk (wases ja au isch😂). Smile erinneret mi anes anders Lied, S.O.F.T. hät öppis, Blue isch cool. Wämmer bedänkt, dass 1995 Right said Fred, Rednex oder Scatman John Tophits gsi sind, isch das Album doch ganz ok. Aber wämmer a d Atomtests vo F im Mururoa-Atoll und s Massaker vo Srebrenica dänkt, isch d Musig eigentli zwenig hässig. Fun-Fact: Mr. Bombastic vom Shaggy isch 1995 au än Hit.
Favorite Track: Connection
Pos-punk/indie legalzinho. Vocal feminino. Inglaterra britpop...
Okay, I get it. It's just not that exciting for me, to be honest.
Meh. I give it two stars. Sounds very generic and formulated. I guess i didn’t make the connection
This is the type of music that people pretend to know to sound cool.
Maybe not bad but I don’t care for it. Would not want to listen to this again. This is a true 2.5 and wasn’t sure whether to go up or down. In the end nothing pushed me to 3.
Meh at best. Not sure why this was on here
This would've been my ENTIRE personality if I would've been a teenager in the 90s.
Highlight: All-Nighter In a nutshell: false advertising. Anthony Leaver from BBC Music in 2011 declared that Elastica's debut was "a blueprint for what Britpop should sound like." Mate, this is more Veruca Salt than Blur. Great riffs and drums, although repetitive. Justine and Donna's vocals reminded me of Debbie Harry and Shirley Manson (Garbage), maybe Courtney Love(?). I can see the connections/rip off allegations between Elastica and Wire and Buzzcocks. I feel like a traitor to my gender by not enjoying the music of a mostly female identifying band on a list lacking in said bands. Sorry ladies :( It's not you, it's me. Overall: 4/10
Heard then on MTV thought they were not that bad, heard them again and I stand my ground, they are neither good or bad
2.4 2x while cleaning garage
Blondie en Wire smashed together, zo zou ik het willen definiëren. Met de attitude van een typische Britpop band. Ik ben het laatste jaar meer in female-led punk/post-punk gedoken, met veel mooie ontdekkingen ten gevolge. The Raincoats, The Slits, en natuurlijk X-Ray Spex. 5,5/10 Highlights: Connection Stutter
Tiresome and obnoxious in a way that could only have been successful in 90s Britain.
Too instrument forward, sounds like every other yelling rock band. Nothing memorable. 2/5
Lyrics: 1/5 Music: 2/5 Production: 3/5 Cohesiveness: 2/5 Overall: 2/5 Stand out songs: Connection
2.5
Just not a fan of moany female led grunge bands
I don’t know if I have a lot to say about this record. It felt promising at the start but it’s just.. unremarkable. Some good femme-grungey vibes throughout, but nothing strikes me as particularly catchy or memorable. I don’t dislike it, but I don’t love it either. I’m a little perplexed at the existence of “Indian Song”. That’s a weird thing to write and record. 2 stars.
This is a deeply mid and entirely forgettable album. It feels like music made for a movie to convey that some side characters are Very Cool Alt Girls In A Band rather than a genuine expression of anything in particular. It’s not bad but it’s not really anything. 4/10
There's some cool stuff on here but overall a bit too "punk rock" for me. The album felt short and long at the same time. Like each song was short but the album still went on too long.
Safe, predictable punk album calls for safe, predictable review. This is definitely one of the albums of all time! It had music in it; guitars, basses, even drums, if you can believe that! And how could I forget the vocals? They were there too!
Annoying and pretentious.
Anderledes end jeg regnede med men stadig lidt kedeligt
I mean it's catchy but I'm starting to wonder about the head space of the Creator of this list. I was hoping for some heavier music of a less modern age.
Gear: Focal Clear (ZMFed) Artwork: 📸🔳😐😐😐😐 Production: 😐🙂👌 Music: 😐🥱😴 Rating: 😐😐/5
Real 90s. And not in a good way. I did recognize one song though.
decidedly mid
Eh. Not great not bad.
Not much here for me. Pretty standard 90s stuff.
It's fine and actually something I might enjoy but it was so forgettable. Nothing caught my attention, nothing stuck in my head, nothing seemed more influential over others in the genre. Idk.. it was fine.
I liked this one more than I expected. There are some catchy, grungy guitar parts that I enjoy. Overall it’s not amazing or anything but I don’t hate it either.
This didn’t age well - and I didn’t think it was all that great to begin with. The production is all mids and treble to me. I didn’t find a hook - even car song and connection didn’t land this time around. I’ll have to go see if Veruca Salt has aged any better!
First time listening, is the same as last time listening. I’d have to really stretch to lie this album.
Repetitive meh... nothing special
Some cool moments with interesting dissonant guitars. But also a lot of quite poppy alt-rock kinda stuff.
Elastica is the debut studio album by Elastica, originally released in 1995. This one was OK, but nothing on here really stood out to me. It seems as though this album is having an identity crisis. On one hand, it wants to be 70s british punk, but it also wants to be grunge, new wave, and alternative rock. It doesn't nail enough of those genres to be considered "eclectic". It just comes off feeling half baked.
This album was pretty good, there's some fun tracks but I wasn't fully sold on the lead singer's voice. It's a bit like Blondie when she rapped and I never really love that one part. I do like the punk vibes but was kinda bored with it by the second half. 2.45.
It's sounds dated now and ok
Can't imagine why this is on the list. Inoffensive and boring? Nothing stood out as either good or bad, just a resounding meh for me
Booooooring
At least they chose a good band to rip off, but man does this album nosedive hard in the second half.
No track had a good singing performance.
Another day another bleh Brit pop band. I don’t understand why there’s so many on the list, it wasn’t a good time for music then and unlike a fine wine it has not gotten better with age. I could not understand what the chick was saying most of the time and music was just meh at best. There wasn’t anything extraordinary about this album at all. Also the album starting off with the one guy in the band grunting/moaning or whatever that was was not a good start. Didn’t need to hear this totally bleh album.
Durchschnittlich. Eher etwas drunter.
Groupe inconnu. Influences plutôt punk, avec des morceaux courts, une basse bien en avant. Mais c'est trop mou à mon gout. Quelques morceaux sont bien énergiques, mais ils sont malheureusement plutôt rare. Globalement rien de bien original. =>2/5
2/12 stars Indie rock, levadas interessantes, cantora de atitude...ref boa
I read it best in another review: "this sounds like the album of a band created for a movie." It's not necessarily bad, but it's not great either. Just sounds like small parts of every band in the genre, but eith all edge and character smoothed over.
I'm unimpressed. This is clearly a punk (or worse, post-punk) band, despite Wikipedia claiming otherwise. Punk has little place in the "influential-music"-sphere of the 90s, and my experience so far is that the 90s has much better to offer than whatever this nonsense is. It's derivative to the point of anonymity. The music is technically high-energy, but lacks any kind of soul or emotion. This is most noticeable in the vocals, which are a standard punk-monotone set to a backing instrumental that isn't very impressive either. The guitar playing is fine but not memorable. Same with the percussion. Whew. I'm just so tired of listening to low-effort punk album after punk album. This honestly could've been worse, with songs like Smile, Car Song, and especially Connection cutting through the darkness and giving us a little excitement. Connection has a fun, subtle synth thing going on that I really liked. (Though even that sounded like hundreds of other bands, most of whom did it earlier.) 2/5 Key tracks: Connection, Car Song, Smile, Vaseline
This is alright. Though as others have pointed out, kind of a ripoff. Odd that they really never went anywhere though. It's 90s fm radio bait for sure.
" I'll take 'Generic alt-rock I didn't need to hear', Alex." 2/5
Punk rock/pop album. Decent but not my thing.
Not for me, bit of a challenge to get through the whole thing. One or two more listenable songs
🎧I’m pretty neutral on all of this. Some of the vocals don’t connect and feel like kind of forced new wave posturing.
Muy basicón de los 90s. No me gustó realmente aunque no es una mierda.
S.O.F.T. was my favorite, but it's Nirvana light. Never Here isn't bad either. I just don't care enough about this to give it more than **
This album was OK I guess. They had one hit song in that one was pretty good. The rest were forgettable and not very good songs. 2/5.
I thought I had never heard of this band before, until I heard the track "connection". That song definitely got radio play, but I always assumed another band played it, I thought it was Veruca Salt, or the Breeders. The songs on this album all sounded pretty similar and there wasn't anything on here that seemed influential or ground breaking to me. As I previously stated, I thought an entirely different band played the one hit I recognized, so I'm not sure why this is something I need to listen to
I'm familiar with this one and the controversy surrounding it. Plagiarism be damned, this album is boring as hell one way or the other. Throwaway rock radio fodder. Ironic that a band called Elastica, would be so plastic - see, now that's clever.
Rock, (Punk), 1995 -> 2
It was fine, wouldn’t run to turn it off but forgettable
Elastica pencil in my ears
Very 90s. But not in the fun way. Weird how you always think 80s songs are so dated but the 90s really have the same quality.
I remember this band from back in the mid 90's. They were alright then and I feel about the same now. I'm not sure I have listened to this since the 90's and that is probably fine.
This was derivative and kind of bad, to be honest. I’ve never been happy with the BritPop bias this list has, but having known plagiarists on this list is egregious. This was grungy after the grunge wave had come and was on its way out. I have a hard time believing this this is somehow one of 1001 records I should hear before I die.
Absolutely nothing special here. Girls doing punk. The voice gets lost in the mix on some songs making the lyrics hard to discern. No explanation as to why this is a must hear - and it sure isn’t obvious.
I feel like I have listened to these songs being played by generic background bands in low budget movies. Middling 2.
Why is this on here? Basic rock band.
Oh boy. This is dreary. I hope Wire got some decent royalties.
#165. Super forgettable 90s alternative. Nothing interesting going on here. It's like off brand Garbage or something. 2/5: yawn
Just okay. There was a bunch of female-driven-Alt-Rock in the early to mid-90's that was better. I hope we get to review Hole's "Live Through This" at some point. ...Or "Simpatico" by Velocity Girl. ...Or "The Burdens of Being Upright" by Tracy Bonham ...Or "Jagged Little Pill" ... so many better choices.
Not good. Not essential.
Meh. Pretty generic '90s alt-crunch for the most part. I still kind of like "Connection", but then I liked it when Wire did it first. One of those albums I bought based on one song and found out that's pretty much the only decent thing on it.
Nothing really of note
Idk how to rate. I really enjoyed this album but it did sound like songs I’ve heard before like some blur songs. 2.5
Meh.
Very lackluster. Generic, another album that I really haven't got much from.
Seems like a decent enough album. But besides a few hits don't know what album it booted off the list. Don't see how it might be any more influential than another similar record.
not my cup of tea
NFm
Generic 5/10
pretty cool. listened in my car and it seemed like the vocals were too quiet.
Meh. Too crunchy and lo-fi for me.
Waking Up Never Here Stutter
Another disappointment. 2/5
Kinda fun 90s album
I graduated high school in 95 and remember Connection. 2/5
Not my thing
This is so 1995
This just didn't hit for me. There is some good guitars tones and double vocals, but it is too tied up with the 80s hair band sound that I despise.
Pretty solid female fronted 90s power pop, pop punk rock. Reminds me of Slater Kinney a bit.
pretty monotonous.
38 Based on this scale: 1 - 0 to 19 2 - 20 to 39 3 - 40 to 59 4 - 60 to 79 5 - 80 to 100 I appreciate the punk flavour sprinkled on top of this, but it's far too generic to earn a better score.
- actually not bad, it’s like playful rock music - melodies aren’t anything crazy catchy for me though - some of the instrumentals are pretty decent but the songs don’t have progression and the singing is nothing great - stutter was my favorite song but still not good enough to save…
Veel van hetzelfde.
This album was fine. Nothing really stood out, but it wasn't terrible either. I think it's just not my genre, but for what it is, it's good.
Middling punk rock fare. I was generally bored, and I’ve heard better, but it wasn’t offensively bad
I was really excited to give Elastica a try. A 90s Alt/Punk band that I’d never heard of?? Amazing. Turns out I have heard Elastica. Connection is as bad of a 90s radio rock song as you’ll ever find. Half way thru my first listen I was positive I’d be giving it 1 star. But the second side of the album is actually decent. When they simplify and just lean into more of an Alt rock/punk style the album actually has some energy Still Elastica peaks at mediocre 90s Alternative and bottoms out at terrible (Car Song, Indian Song) 5.3/10
# 76 : Just another meh album. All to plain and familiar. I can listen to it, but it's not exciting, no hits and nothing stood out. Wouldn't voluntarily go back to it. Hold Me Now
For the most part pretty boring rock music for me. Vaseline was probably most memorable.
Very boring and forgettable
Punk, or in the moments, psychedelic melodies doesn't go with the soft female voices for me. There were a few parts that got me listening, but overall not really my piece of cake.
It was fine, but another that i forgot was on, it all just started blending together
I mean I don’t like this genre but I did reach a state of neutral tolerance with it so I guess that’s good 2.5/5
Not a fan.
Should be right up my alley, but it doesn't really click. It has the style but not the songwriting. I like it all right, but there are a hundred other bands doing the same thing better, so why wouldn't I listen to those instead? Nothing here is inspired. How did this end up on this list?
Pretty by-the-numbers punky album with female vocals. Most of the songs are shorter and faster paced, however there is a little variety. I did like the more straightforward punk rock songs like Annie and Blue over the album’s singles, but this album was far from special.
Forgettable.
Definitely not one of the absolute worst, but also definitely not good. No idea why this is taking up a slot on this list. Half-baked music with horrible production.
It's ok, not very different than other new wave and pop punk bands of the era
This album is okay. I am more just confused as to why it's on this list.
Olha só! Até que apareceu um britpop aceitável por motivos de vocal feminino e ter alguma pegada punk.
bof
90s landfill indie. They obviously loved Wire cos they nicked some of their tunes.
BL: never heard of Elastica before - but after doing some digging and seeing their links to Suede I’m excited to hear it - Suede has produced many a song I like. AL: in the end I felt pretty “meh” about this album. It wasn’t bad, but it certainly wasn’t good. It’s a shame because Suede was a band which in my eyes had some amazing diversity alongside being quintessential to the development of britpop as a genre so how is it that an offshoot of it can be so bland and generic? All 15 tracks sound the same, and while it wasn’t too offensive due to its short running time I just felt rather empty after listening - I can’t say much else about it. The instrumentation is good - however it all mostly sounds the same, there weren’t any drum breaks, guitar solos or even vocal moments which stood out as interesting or even unique. A pretty bland experience overall, don’t think I’ll listen to it again. Favourite tracks: “Car Song” & “2:1” (the only two which made me actually look at the track listing) 2/5
Not very exciting post-punk rock
not really my thing
Sisältää muutaman hyvän idean (esim. Car Song, Blue) ja kunnioitettavaa minimalismia, mitä tulee koukkujen säveltämiseen. Kärsii jossain määrin täytebiiseistä, liian ammattimaisesta tuotannosta (miksi vaikkapa Stutter-biisin kitaroiden päälle pamautetaan lasia leikkaava treblebasso ja stereorummut??) sekä 90-luvulle tyypillisestä melodisuudesta.
Inte särskilt kul.
Love a good raw 90's album cover. Hate those distorted guitar tones. Ugh it's like it's coming out of a 25$ practice amp that's been living in someone's grandparents attic for decades. Even worse is that the guitars are panned the way they are with the on/off right/left playing. It hurts!! Not unlistenable though. Ok so "Connection" is their big track that I remember. This album was ok, I think it's a 2/5 for me. Not sure if it needs to be on this list.
The Specials, My Perfect Cousin, Banana Splits, Pixies, B-52s...it's all here. Maybe you spot the magpie tendencies of these riffs because of the band's well known 'borrowing' of other songs, and the tunes are mostly quite familiar. Having said that, I actually enjoyed this more than expected. A punky pop romp all over the face of Britpop. I much prefer the energy of this to some of the other Britpop crew, and the sparse, harsh sound suits these songs. There are a few duffers (esp Indian Song), and pruning down to 30 minutes or so would have helped, but still plenty of catchy sing-along tunes here. 2.5 stars.
More UK alterna-garbage. Just a bland, it's-already-over-didn't-you-get-the-memo attempt at the punkier end of grunge - mindless chords, monotonous drumbeat & singing, minimal songwriting. Just as all the other bands that didn't get the memo started doing the exact same thing. Not surprising it's in the list here, but as usual it doesn't deserve to be. 2/5.
Ok i guess. a couple saves but not revolutionary
bored me
Nytt bekjentskap. Ekte punkrock "jenteband" (dog med mannlige innslag). Mye attitude, sinne og aggresjon. Litt mye piggtrådlyd for mine ører. Lite originalitet her. Hadde kun ett album som slo ordentlig an. Topp tusen? Hm...
I heard it for the first time. Nothing special to me.
Ok Album with a couple of known songs
Incredibly normal album from an exceedingly usual 90s indie band. It feels accomplished but unexciting. If I was a 13 year old alternative pop punk fan in 2003 I would probably play these songs on my first guitar. I am a 30 year old cynic in 2023 though so fuck that
not my thing.
Punk but chill.
Let me set aside my rage over the shameless Wire and Stranglers rip-offs to try to enjoy this thing. The harmonies on Car Song are cool. The beginning of Hold Me Now is cool. The melody for the verse on S.O.F.T is cool. I think the thing that prevents me from enjoying this music (aside from their plagiarism, of course) is the singer's cold, ironic, distant delivery. I get tired of people who think they're better than everyone. Personally, I'd rather listen to Sleater-Kinney.
I was not previously familiar with this group, and the music wasn't offensively bad but just didn't stick with me.
Middle of the road 2-3. Don’t feel I will be revisiting Cover art 2/5
A good album without a doubt, just not my thing. First Listen?: Y Fav. Track(s): Connection Rating: 2/5
Eh, not really my thing.
pretty dull. 2.
Meh.
Not bad, but nothing interesting
Not my kind of music. I'm actually surprised that the album has made it to the 1001 list.
2.5
Not bad, not great
Decent sounds but not any tracks that catch my interest.
Damon Alburn didn’t write or produce this album. That much ought to be obvious.
