No doubt Sullivan has a great voice, I just think her songwriting style is not correlated to my own tastes for the most part. I think fans of adjacent artists will get a lot out of this record.

This is thankfully short. I say thankfully because it is not good. At all. It's both boring and cliche. Maybe there should be a ten year rule for this list. Because there is no way this will be on it in ten years, let alone remembered by more than a handful of people.
New album for me. As a first impression, the music sounds like generic r&b, but fine and probably will only get better after a couple of more listens. But too many spoken word tracks break the flow.
I don't get excited about this, in particular the spoken intermezzo's are annoying.

De AliExpress namaak versie van The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Typisch zo'n album waar de moderne muziekcriticus voor warmloopt, net als die Janelle Monae. Het allerergste? Ik kan hier een 3 voor geven. Minder kut dan Astrud, maar tegelijkertijd daardoor ook een stuk minder memorabel.

I am probably not the target market but do agree on two things I have seen in other reviews here: -The production felt a bit light on, even sounding flat in places -Jazmine is definitely inspired by Lauryn Hill which isn't a bad thing. Some hard hitting lyrics that get a bit juicy. Not my thing but it works here. My only issue is it felt a bit tired by the end of the album

All the low ratings prove Jazmine was right to record this EP. Sure, it's nothing like making it to 1001 of the greatest albums ever. But let's be honest here: music is objective, and quite a handful of records on this list wouldn't belong here. And it's okay, some music stays relevant a little longer than the other. And as for me, I couldn't possibly imagine a better record to this explicitly embrace and manifest female sexuality and freedom in 20's than Heaux Tales.

This was a really interesting album that nails its concept while staying on point musically. Assertive and soulful. Pointedly honest and even occasionally uncomfortable in the way it presents the nuances of modern sexual politics. Centers the point of view of women in a way few albums do. This is also one of the few albums I can think of where interludes/skits are used effectively. Fave Songs: Pick Up Your Feelings, On It, Girl Like Me, Lost One
These are the albums I wait for on this list. Newer albums that I didn't even know existed but are right up my alley. Also want to praise the use of Tales instead of Interludes. Often those interludes are pointless and annoying but these were filled with stories of the female experience, very unique. I loved almost all the tracks but I think those tales were my favorite part.
Really cool to get this one! I heard it when it came out and really enjoyed it, liked it a bite more this time around. I dig just about every non-interlude track, and even though I could go without the interludes, I appreciate what they add to the narrative, everything fits. Nice R&B concept album, well executed. Favorite tracks: Price Tags, Girl Like Me, Bodies, On It, Lost One, The Other Side. Album art: Really great cover, slight Virgil Abloh vibes. Cool portait picture of Jazmine, and the font and color is nice. Strong. 4/5
Modern classic in its genre. It’s dope to see the female pov of what guys usually brag about in songs: bachelor life, sleeping around, tricking off, etc. It’s most interesting when it turns bittersweet and she’s talking about how this is her lifestyle but she wants more and doesn’t know how to get more. Kind of relatable even as a guy.
I have never heard of Jazmine Sullivan but this was a great album and I will add to my rotation! I enjoyed the storytelling in between songs and the positive message about sex.
For something that dropped just 3 years ago, it already sounds dated and tired. The track with Paak on it was one of the few redeeming areas. 2 forgettable footnotes out of 5

very bland modern music. She has the standard good female voice, which to me has kinda lost it's appeal. when everybody is copying the same voice i can't really hear the difference between singers. The music and production is sparse. Well mixed but when you have just 2-3 elements it is probably not that hard. Modern music really don't do well with album in my opinion. Not bad but it just feel like any other modern RnB +Soul + Hip-hop album. It's not my type of music so maybe i just don't understand it.

Great album, offering a perspective that's been strongly lacking on this list. Once the first listen is done I can always do without skits, but each one sets of the song following it really well. Serious and sincere while still being fun and easy to listen to. The duets with H.E.R. and Ari Lennox are great, and "Roster" is an excellent song. Glad this made the list.

Nice to listen to something hypermodern since this is one of the newest albums on the list. I'd never actually heard of Jazmine Sullivan, but I don't pay much attention to this genre. As a woman, I appreciated the themes and the messages of the songs and spoken interludes, but overall I found the music wholly forgettable.
This album is not for me, it is fine. I thought that the spoken word segments were interesting and tie the album together. I don't have any bad to say about this one, but it's not something I would ever listen to again. I've been on a rough patch recently with this list. hopefully I can get some albums I really enjoy soon.
Loved this! Life experiences and perspectives from a feminine perspective that I still don't get enough exposure to, with great vocal performances and set to some really fun production/arrangements. Not lifechanging, but fun music with something to say. 4.5 rounded down to 4.

Weird one, could have been a little like the mighty Jill Scott (who probably isn't on this list), but it falls short. The vignettes are not particularly flattering, and the songs aren't terrible, but they aren't amazing either. Time will judge that this isn't a classic of any type.
The most memorable thing about this album is the spoken parts. Music bad.
I liked and still like the Commodores, I love Barry White and many more, R&B and soul were great, but I don't understand what is being produced today under this or related labels. I can't do anything with it. OK, some of the music snippets are interesting and beautiful, but they mostly come from a different time. It may be that her lyrics are important and good. It's great that she writes them herself. Unfortunately I can't do anything with it. I'm sorry, but it's not my music

Modern Pop and R&B that follows a concept. Usual tricks abound. It's not particularly exciting to listen to and there aren't any melodies that hang around. Bland and inoffensive. At least it's short - so it has that going for it. I'd like to know how the list can decide on these modern albums when there hasn't really been any time to see how well they last... I’m so confused. This is such a deviation away from what this list has normally done and I feel like it’s the only one past 2010 even so far. Not that I disliked it but not what I expected and I feel like there’s a ton of better more prolific modern music in general and hip hop more specifically.

• Love "Pick Up Your Feelings". Love the production of this song. Gives me a feeling I wish I could describe... It's the kind of song I would LOVE to hear live. • Put It Down is unexpectedly relatable... Wasn't expecting that lol. • "On It" is so sultryyyy. • The conversational clips, told from different black women's perspectives: I can see what Jazmine is doing. All these conversational clips are to make a statement that this album is coming from a place of giving black women a voice about their identity with womanhood, societal identity and sexuality. These clips add a personable, casual conversation tone to the album, like Jasmine is wanting to include us, the listeners, in this conversation. It gives the vibe that this album is a collection of different women of colour's stories. I really kinda like it. • Amanda's Tale is... relatable. I'm not black, but I am a woman, and her statements about comparing herself to other women, feeling like she only has sex to offer, acknowledging that her sexual power is empowering but also sad at the same time... "I feel moments of sadness knowing that just me alone and who I am is not enough" yeah, oof. • The way the final track segues from Amanda's Tale is really well done. Love the journey of this album - of women proudly talking of their sexual liberation... and coming to realise by the end of the album that the experience of women - black women, white women, but especially black because that is where this album is coming from, speaking from - is that all men see is sex and not what lives beneath that. The shame, hurt, only feeling like sex is all men see as worthwhile in woman, all that women are taught to see is valuable in themselves. Really like this album. Very thoughtful, melancholic, full of womanly curves in its soft and sultry beats and tones, and gritty in all its raw and honest revelations of black femininity.
not really my type of music and there were too many inderludes between songs
This album highlights many of the issues of modern dating and relationships from a feminine perspective, but rather than a critique of those issues, it seems very much of a glorification of the vapid nature of dating and lifestyles in general of today. I appreciate the insight into a lifestyle foreign to my own, even if it is anathema to me. I agree with some other reviewers that this was maybe added a little hastily. It seems lost in a sea of other similar releases over the last few years.

Ich frage mich auf wessen Couch man schlafen muss, um innerhalb von 3 Jahren in die Liste der Grundgesamtheit von 1001 Alben aufgenommen zu werden? Inhaltlich ist die Platte eines der besseren R&B Alben, mit einer frivolen Stimme und aufeinander abgestimmten Songs zum Thema Sex - wobei wir wieder bei der Couch sind. Ich selber konnte dem Album weder ein Happy End noch einen Höhepunkt abgewinnen.
I really enjoyed parts of the album when I had it on in the background whilst pottering about. Nice R&B arrangements and harmonies. Didn’t really tune into any of the lyrics or the narrative in the filler ‘tracks’. So wanted to give it a second listen properly. Second listen under the headphones whilst reading the lyrics. Wow, didn’t realise ladies were this direct in this day and age! I felt very old, in fact I felt like a dirty old man listening in on something I shouldn’t be listening to 🤣. A little relieved that I hadn’t casually popped this album on whilst having dinner with the family as I sometimes do with the 1,001 album list as it usually generates a conversation!
The problem with this is, according to the write up, it's all about the lyrics and the issues she wishes to address. So as a casual listener who approaches this for the first time will miss this point and think, this is pleasant enough, but is it really the best of the genre? A 1.6 of a star. So rounded up to 2.

This is a good R&B album by Sullivan but interesting choice as Reality Show is definitely better than this album. This one is good and her singing is well done and production is fine. But there isn’t as much depth on this one and the skits are more prevalent. I’d revisit it but it’s not her best work. 6.5/10

I had not heard of Jazmine Sullivan but I am glad to know who she is now. Super solid R&B album that you could tell meant something to her personally. At times it almost felt like a therapy session of her love life. The beats were good, the melodies silky and the interludes didn't negatively effect the album. I plan on coming back to Sullivan and exploring her music further.
Everything was good but her lyrics. For an album that has so many good things going for it, the repeated themes of "big dick, don't be broke" got old. Reminds me of how people dislike low effort hip hop for the same reasons. She has a great voice, style, band - I wished she expressed it a little more artistically than "big dick put it on my face" "it's the d it's the d" it comes across as trap rap lyrics in rnb. I loved some of the gospel inspiration on some of the songs. I think it worked really well. The album was really personal which helped me stay interested in her story. The features were solid but nothing that stood out.

Ah, meh attempt at making every rnb clichee of the 2020s sound artsy by interjecting supposedly empowering samples that is just adding to objectification of women. So it basically fails at everything it’s doing, apart from sounding not terrible. If it was only trying to be a collection of singles, it would have potential. First, I was kind of surprised that this album was on this list. I knew it was critically acclaimed, but it didn’t really seem like something that was major enough to feature on this list. However, this list makes a lot of weird choices and I guess it’s hard to pick the more recent albums. As for the album itself, it’s OK but R&B isn’t a genre I have a lot of interest in. For this album, it felt like a lot of it was relying on the vocals with limited instrumentals, whereas I usually prefer more instrumentals. I also don’t pay too much attention to lyrics and this is a concept album, so that didn’t really help. I feel like the cover reflects the kind of clinical sound that the album left me with. I know this is pretty critical for 3 stars, but 3 stars is a huge range for me when it comes to this list/generator.
I was skeptical when I saw the title, and sure enough I hated this album. What a devastating indictment of how Third Wave Feminism has gutted modern womanhood. I can’t imagine living with such a transactional mindset and allowing my identity and self-worth to be utterly wrapped up in my sexuality. How gross and depressing.
5/5. A short and tight album (even the deluxe) with skits and interludes that flow with the track list and each full song is so memorable and well-written. Way more R&B and soul and Jazmine does have the soothing voice to match. I think there can be a disconnect to listen to a very direct and honest woman speak about sex, love, individuality, and vulnerability. She, or others, may say things in her skits that rub you the wrong way but they are not apologetic, they know what they want and you may not like them, but that's who they are. I would never want to be friends irl based on their morals but that does not take away her skill of an artist to be able to create amazing songs for each opinion. Best song: Pick up your feelings, Lost one, Hurt me so good
Considering this album was released in 2021, this is hardly a "classic" or even worth my while. I've never of this, but I guess I'm listening in the wrong places. I'm getting tired of albums, especially by rap/hip hop artists who literally need to tell us about their problems and their empowerment issues. I don't care, but apparently someone does to deem this album "essential". Interesting with some good beats, but a hard pass.
Thoughts before listening: Very recent album. I remember this getting a lot of praise in 2021, but it's not really my thing. Also feels like an odd choice for the list. In general its hard to evaluate the recent entries on this list that is so focused on an album's legacy and inspiration to future releases. Review: As far as modern R&B goes this is pretty good. I like the concept of story songs that are each inspired by different female perspectives. This album won Grammys and made the top of a ton of best of the year lists. Its a good album, but its just not something that I relate to. Perfect example of an album that I can respect even if its not really my style of music. I will give this a 3-star rating, but I don't really know that it belongs on this list.

Incredible writing about serious topics. Shoutout to empowered women. The music is well written but simple, showcasing the lyrics and poetry. The structure is what makes this album stand out: incredibly vulnerable spoken word followed by songs expanding on those concepts. Easy to connect with and overwhelmingly honest
Wow! Just Wow! Incredible album, like a mix betweenold chance the rapper and Janelle monae with a touch of sza and frank ocean! Only fault the album has is the lack if a strong closing track .
This is what I like about the daily album - I never would have heard something like this otherwise. While it’s not for me, really, I can see that she’s very good.

It's really an EP once the skits are removed (serious skits rather than those on 3 feet high...) - but these half-a-dozen songs are a great listen, and they get stronger as things progress. solid three stars, in a genre that's not really in my comfort zone.
I hadn't heard of Jasmine Sullivan so this was great to hear. I can see why it gets great reviews. The vocals are impressive. It's more my daughter's style than mine though. Favourite track Pick up Your Feelings

Ah so here we are, the very newest entry in the current version of the book, have been curious to see what this was, as I've never heard of it or her. If I was going to argue what other records from 2021 should be here I'd say Self Esteem (similar theme to this one really except if she was a white girl from Sheffield), Little Simz (not too far removed), Black Country New Road (English, so people would cry) and Floating Points (but this book doesn't acknowledge jazz exists after 1963), so yeah ok, Heaux Tales, let's see what's up. Starts strong, Pick Up Your Feelings is really good. RnB has improved so much from its nadir in the 90s. Not as keen on Put it Down or On it. Donna's Tale is funny. Price Tags is funny also, and an update to Destiny's 'Bills' which I always found annoying. Lost One is indeed gorgeous. She's got pipes, this one. And sings in lots of different styles. The Other Side is a fantastic slice of pop RnB with a yearningly aspirational chorus (even if it seems a pretty superficial dream). I am somewhat surprised how much I enjoyed this overall as it's not my thing generally, but great records surpass such self-imposed restrictions, and this does that.

Albums I have not been recommended yet: 'Mama's Gun' Erikah Badu 'Raw like sushi' Neneh Cherry 'Adventures in Paradise' Minnie Ripperton Thankfully I've already heard those and one track from any of them is worth more than this entire album. Not objectively bad, but how I needed to hear this before I died I've no idea. Is it a control specimen so I can judge talent, greatness and influence since this is pretty neutral on those key factors? I am far too old and this album is far too new. It also just sounds derivative, it's an also-ran melting-pot of nothing in particular. Apparently the lyrics are good or at least interesting, but I couldn't stay focussed to give them any thought. Also the "candid" conversation bits need to get in the sea, if I want to hear that shit I can just get on a busy bus and not put my earphones in. NEXT.
Not "6 Music Dad" friendly. I hate it. Couldn't listen to it, not my thing.
Fairly basic and simple. It wasn't unpleasant but it didn't sound any different from anything I hear being played by the urban youth today. Call me old-fashioned and\or demanding, but a good album is one that crosses boundaries i.e. old gits like me, and youngsters, and everyone in between, can agree it's a standout.

Reading the reviews on here and outside this site, Heaux Tales is very often compared to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. I listened to both back to back. That comparison is borderline offensive. Heaux Tales isn’t terrible, but in comparison, she’s not close to Hill as an MC, beats are tiny. It’s not close. I get that importance of the theme of women’s sexuality but musically this isn’t a stand out album at all 5.4/10
There are exactly four tracks that are legitimately good, four tracks that have bad lyrics and a bad message, and six “tales” that act as interesting interludes between the music. I’ll start with the pros. Bodies, Pick Up Your Feelings, Lost One, and Girl Like Me are great examples of how to use themes in modern electronic pop to make well-textured, smooth, listenable R&B that appeals both to general audiences and music enthusiasts. The lyrics are fairly uninteresting but still relatable, discussing topics like love, relationship, and interpersonal conflict. Now for the cons – and they’re some pretty serious cons. Put It Down and On It are essentially a love letter to the small population of well-endowed men, and they perpetuate an insecurity that a huge proportion of guys have about their bodies. For an album with such a commercialised sound (trying to speak to a wide audience), this ain’t gonna fly. I guarantee that any man singing or rapping about a woman’s body like Jazmine is here would be shunned, cancelled, the works – and rightfully so. In addition to how frustratingly tone-deaf and entitled the lyrics are, they’re also just poor lyrics, and they distract from the otherwise great sound. On the topic of entitlement, the tracks Price Tags and The Other Side speak to another fairly toxic dimension of partner preferences in men: wealth. Sure, you have some oldies that commit the same offence (ABBA’s “Money, Money, Money” is an obvious example) - and I’ll admit I dislike the lyrics of that song too, but at least in isolation, it expresses a desire without trying to rationalise it. However, combined with the interlude “Precious’ Tale”, Sullivan is essentially saying that because she (and/or other women) grew up poor, and yet they’re confident in their attractiveness, they deserve to have a wealthy, hard-working, attractive man to themselves. It’s another really tone-deaf pair of tracks that expresses an ugly shallowness and sense of entitlement which take away from the rest of the music. I’m all about social progress, but this doesn’t feel like social progress to me. (Hopefully I’m completely off the mark here and Sullivan is doing social commentary about the commodification of men, but I doubt it.) Edit 4/1/25: This album has aged poorly in my mind. So, this comes a day after Appetite for Destruction for me, its an interesting comparison. I highlighted the misogyny in the other one and it feels important to do the same here. As a 41 year old white dude from Ireland, I've never had to assess the correct order for cash app and my pussy, but the message about getting paid isn't one I feel I'd share with my kids. Moving on from the message, it comes down to how this makes me feel. Did the lyrics resonate with me? No, can I imagine they do for other people? Sure. Did the music engage with me? No, I'm not R'n'B expert but I could name 5 better albums quickly. Did I like the idea of mixing spoken word and song? Yeah, why not.
I didn't mind this. Always cool to see Anderson Paak popping up. I think it's itornic that on a list full of wanknalbums from the 70s people here are moaning about the relevancy of the lyrical content. It all very current to me.
Likable on many levels, most importantly the musical. Flows are real and R&B-like, and the content shows vulnerability that seems more authentic (if oversharing) than a marketing ploy. "Sex is my superpower" indeed!

I don’t usually listen to a lot of R&B, but I am open to it. I thought the message of this album was really great, and the interludes were a cool touch. Not my favorite music in the world but appreciated from an objective standpoint. Feels like a bad bitch.
An honest exploration of sex, relationships, and bodily autonomy. Heaux Tales starts off strong for me with the narrative of "Bodies" and the groove of "Pick Up Your Feelings," which I also appreciate as a turn of phrase. I would like "Put It Down" a lot more if it weren't for that infernal trap style hi-hat. "On It" is fun lyrically, but otherwise boring to me. "Price Tags" I mostly like (wish I could place that sample), and the Anderson .Paak feature is great, but the languid chorus parts bring it down a bit. In general this type of R&B influenced rap isn't really my style, but I liked it more than I thought I would.
I have to own that I prefer classic R&B over the more contemporary examples, because, in general, it tends to be more harmonically interesting. With that said, I was impressed by this album. It has the sparse instrumentation, driven predominantly by the drum machine and bass, that usually bores me after a while. However, there was a nice variety of grooves established for each track, which set the stage for Jazmine Sullivan’s excellent vocal performance. She demonstrates great versatility with her voice. The lyrics were pretty crass, but the delivery felt honest to me. I will definitely listen to this again when the mood strikes me.

Wow... first time hearing this album it is a real journey that Lost One even had me in tears. Very honest and a full range of emotions are explored at times as emotionally raw as Elvis Costello. The music matches the stories told. This is an amazing fully realized concept album!

not a big R&B fan, and especially not a fan of graphic discussions of genitals (from either side), but I suppose I have to give some points for women taking charge of their own bodies & pointing out that "in actuality, the pu$$y is ours," or the raw, honest discussions of how cheating hurts people. points lost for all the talk of essentially trading sex for money/favors, though, which, again, is gross from either side (at least the nuance is acknowledged).

So - musically lovely smooth and silky contemporary R&B and hip hop - but it’s a nice shift of perspective finally from the usual male focussed idea of sexuality to women’s viewpoints - each song accompanied by a ‘skit’. Thing is, again t skits - they’re fine on first listens but get in the way of making an album timeless.
R&B brought back the album after streaming threatened to make it irrelevant. I don't know if the sounds on Heaux Tales will age well but the concept is unique.
personal stories, stories of heartbreak, relationships and growing up as a woman. it's pretty empowering, but its got that modern typical trap hip-hop flow and plenty of lyrics that are unsurprising at best, talking about money and her pussy at all. the money and pussy mentions aren't just bragging but even so i just... couldn't get into it too much.
I was thinking to myself that I’ve heard of Heaux Tales somewhere before, but then I realised it was just from when I was looking at the latest additions to 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, which is what all of these reviews are based on. Beyond that, I’ve never heard of Jazmine Sullivan before. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Pick Up Your Feelings There are undoubtably some very distinct, and very talented vocals on this album. Jazmine Sullivan sounds almost androgynous with her lower raspy lines, and she’s clearly talented. However, vocals are only one piece of the puzzle that makes a good album, and I found every other piece here to be very dull. I did enjoy the idea of songs based around the spoken word tales within this, but it unfortunately just didn’t make for very interesting listening.
Liked it a lot
So Heaux Tales isn't particularly remarkable, it's not bad but I think it has an inflated view of itself, albeit successfully as it's ended up on this list and been successful. It's like a wannabe Miseducation of Lauryn Hill but without any of the depth of lyric or content or worldly understanding (which is funny because Jazmine was 33 when she put this out, Lauryn was 23), the beats are passable but unrefined, there's the always unforgivable use of autotune at times, but there are a couple of really nice moments in there. Pick Up Your Feelings is excellent, also unsurprisingly the track with the most writers and production, and Girl Like Me finishes off in a similar vein. Probably a low 3 on a generous day.
This sounds way older than it is without anything particularly new to offer soundwise. It's pretty generic R&B, presume it caught the MeToo wave at just the right time given its lyrical content. And, to be fair, it does tackle that to an extent, but it's a bit too right on, a bit too obvious and lacking in the nuance that you get from something like Lauryn Hill. 2/5.
This is the first album from this project that I've listened to, having not heard it before, and thought "I need to listen to this more and really wrap my head around it." That's a mark of quality, to be sure. Excited to spend more time with this.
A front to back joy, and maybe one of the few times the interludes are what brings the album all together.
Very open about female sexuality and her struggles with it. It was a very compelling lyrically and a good listen as an artistic work. I thought the production was good and the rapping pretty decent. I don't think many songs are going to make it onto playlists or get revisited though.
One very very good single (Pick Up Your Feelings) does not a great album make... nice to know the list has releases this current I guess

not generally my cup of tea, but i thought this album was fairly interesting. i felt like the structure of a song being led in by a "tale" was neat and gave the album a pretty good narrative flow. the music, production, and performances were alright, but ultimately this just isn't totally my thing. i still appreciate what it was going for and am happy i got exposed to something outside of my normal bubble.

Why? Half the already very short album is 'skits', so beloved of rap and R'n'B. They are presumably supposed to add context but detract from the experience of listening to the music. Am the tracks seem utterly forgettable. Plus there's a lot of the awful mumbly triplets that Snoop Dogg has complained us ruining and homogenising rap. Snoop knows the score. Bin this right off.

Unique, in the concept and the execution, but with clear nods to lots of classic American artists from the past. The story-telling and world-building is exquisite, and the vocals are flawless, verging on transcendant at points. An absolute unexpected joy - the closest comparison would be Janelle Monae, in terms of how much I enjoyed it and also how much of a bolt from the blue it was. Brilliant and startling

Album 275 of 1001 Jazmine Sullivan - Heaux Tales Rating : 2 / 5 No clue as to why this would be on a list of albums that one needs to hear before they die. Even for its genre, I heard nothing special here. Nothing that hasn't been done by others before and since.
This album was so refreshing after luke 2 straight weeks in 1969 to 1971. The music is quite nice and I like the testimonials in between the songs, kind of a unique gimmick that works well with the album title. Price Tags was my favorite here, followed by Lost One.

Never heard of Jazmine Sullivan before listening to this. Some interesting songs, not really my thing though.
The intro got my hackles up. The phrase "sexual being" is like nails on a chalkboard to me. But Pick Up Your Feelings is pretty good and Put It Down and On it are pretty funny. I came to appreciate the concept part of the concept album by the end. I didn't love it, but by the end I had at least thawed towards it.

I think the frank discussions of sexuality on this are great. Sex and sexuality can be a topic that comes off as cheesy or forced, but I think having mini-confessionals before the track that they inform is a clever tactic that works really well. I think a song like "Lost One" gets a heavier punch hearing the source, as it were. For the first time on this list, I think this album comes across a little, very little underbaked. Aforementioned "Lost Ones" is fantastic, but I think it doesn't know how to properly end so it just... cuts out. Also, when you look at it, half of this album is, technically, interludes. It's a short record, but I would've wanted so much more. Regardless, I enjoyed it enough to call it a 4.5, rounding up cos Jazmine is from Philly. Favorite tracks: "Put It Down", "Lost One", "On It"

Although I appreciate the concept of trying to tell a broad story using songs and confessional interludes, I think the album is just a little too repetitive in content and form to be totally effective. For an album pertaining to womanhood with themes of feminism, I was hoping that there would be other perspective of women offered. Is there no loyalty? Is there no space for motherhood? Is there no love? The only mention of anything beyond hookup and party culture was the mention of two kids with a rich guy and a surrogate, which the narrator seems more concerned with her maintaining her image than the actual kids (I grant that her tongue was most likely firmly in cheek). But I guess the album's title essential means tales of hoes, so the album is at least honest to its title. (Begs the question: is the attempt at reclaiming the title's derogatory term Heaux simple the acceptance of that term and all it entails: sex for money, image over substance, short -term transactional encounters over long-term loyalty?) The longing and passion with which Jazmine sings about money and acquiring material possessions is usually reserved for expressing ones love of another. I can appreciate the irony and humor here, but I think the joke becomes lost in a great muddle somewhere between pure sincerity and biting sarcasm. Obviously, this album was not made for me, so I will try to be a bit more objective. The production here is stellar: voices mingle with sharp instrumentations and silky beats to smooth effects. Jazmine is obviously talented and has a unique voice, both singing and writing. I’lol leave it at this: my desire for people to grow and become better humans and artists leads me to truly hopes she will someday write an album that fully lives up to the lost potential here.
I can't stand R&B; it's one of the very few musical genres that do absolutely nothing for me, except make my ears die. All simulated bling vocals and soft, placid beats. Even if the songs are saying anything I can't stand listening to the treated vocal noise. One R&B song/album is pretty much the same as another, so why I need to hear yet another collection of of it before I die remains a mystery.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’s slag sister
This album was added to the 1001 albums list merely ten months after being released, a bold choice to be sure. While sceptical of it's inclusion at first, I was won over by reading some of the reviews on here. Among the many positive ratings, a number of reviewers simply did not accept anything other than canonized white male rock music from the sixties and seventies being on the list. Being of your time is no bigger a sin than being of a time long passed. By mistake, I first listened to the extended version, which I found to be interesting, yet a little long. The "tales" ask you to accept bold, flawed women, adding a lot of challenging interest to the songs. On my second listen, I went for the pure musical experience, listening only to the songs. Whitout the interludes, the album loses most of it's ability to challenge the listener, leaving a musical experience which is pretty good, yet decisively not of my typical taste. I can see this album being a really big deal to some people, thanks in no small part to the statement it makes. For me, it's not quite it. I'm glad I listened, but I don't think this is a stayer in my library. 3.2
Eh it was ok
I'm not sure how I hadn't heard of this before as someone that reads end of year best of lists religiously, but I did. I guess it speaks to a real blind spot in the music that I consume. This album truly is a gem; it's raw and emotional, but the music is really well-produced that the songwriting is strong. I can't relate too much to the subject matter for most of the songs, but I guess that's why it's good to listen to different than normal types of music, right?

I thought this was one of the most boring records on here so far. Too much spoken word and it’s not even funny or interesting like parliament. And then the actual songs are super basic and generic sounding. I just didn’t find anything interesting about this.
I liked pick up your feelings. Otherwise some of it seemed unfinished. Maybe it was the length of a lot of the songs.
Beside Anderson Paak's track, this sound isn't for me and the lyrics are too on the nose.

(3/5 it sounds good but it's a miss) Price Tags - women in RnB feel underrepresented. this fucks (5/5) Lost One - you can hear the inspiration from the early 00s throughout this. the development to this is great (5/5) The Other Side - it's so summer drive vibe. (5/5 it's just nice.) Girls Like Me - a very fitting ending to an album too (4/5) this album actually slapped a lot. maybe because it's the most recent album i've had but i thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. 5/5 the amount of skits are.. a lot but honestly it was pretty easy to ignore.

Price tags is unfortunately not my favourite, but Anderson Paak’s bit was good.

R&B, like wine, I can tell you that I know when a unit is very good or okay but not explain quite why. Lack of exposure for certain, but that’s why this list has been helpful. There is really just a handful of random R&B on this list so that hasn’t helped. I can tell there is something here but am not literate enough to tell you what. I could spend some time complaining about how much I didn't care for this record, but at the end of the day, it's just not my thing. That's not the album's problem, it's mine. Some records are made for existing fans of the genre, artist, or whatever. This is one of them. I'm not a convert, and that's perfectly fine. Sullivan's vocals can really soar in places, and I wanted more of that! The song structures, production, and writing approach were just kind of stale overall. It feels like an inauthentic attempt at female empowerment, where Sullivan just throws around a lot of key words without any substance or meaning behind them. Faux Tales? I do wonder what the criteria is for including albums this recent on this list. Heaux Tales is two years old. I don't really remember anyone talking about it that much. Anyway, hope you're doing alright today. The Anderson .Paak and Ari Lennox tracks were solid.

I really tried to find some redeeming qualities in this album but alas, I could not. The music, or beats, or whatever you wanna call it was uninspiring. Very boring. Reminded me a lot of the simplistic lofi beats I put on to study. Jazmine’s voice is fine but nothing overtly special. The lyrics and overall theme is where it lost me. I just don’t jive with that lifestyle. Wrong demographic I guess.
Went into this listening thinking we’d dislike the album but I was personally pleasantly surprised. I thought the songs were catchy with a nice beat, and I enjoyed the overall concept of the album. Ciara felt it was a little too spoken wordy at parts, but it worked for me. Though some of them were recorded a bit badly and difficult to understand. I would definitely revisit this album and in general, just cool to experience newer music for the first time as I’ve absolutely never heard of this.

Reading other reviews of this I was expecting this to be terrible, but it wasn't. It's not good, not by a long stretch, but its perfectly pleasant bland boring background music - but that doesn't make this an album I either want to ever hear again, or indeed deserving of its place on this list. It's like listening to clear broth when you wanted to hear mulligatawney.

On this record Jazmine Sullivan comes across as the successor to Ms Lauren Hill. Lots of spoken word interludes and a similar mix of singing and rapping. I feel like I have heard 100 albums that all sound like this, to the point where this went into an Aliyah song after it was finished and I didn't even notice the difference. It's not a style that I generally enjoy. Polished, competent emoting, and of zero interest to me. The songs don't speak to me and the music has had a personality bypass by way of the production.
I'm never a fan of spoken word interludes. It's insulting to the listener, assuming that you need the context to appreciate the track that is to follow. Take away the ramblings and you have a fairly tight album. The bump 'n' grind ballads work well. And yes, I was able to keep up with the story.

Good album, for once I feel like it’s actually accurate when the description says “explores themes of sexuality etc etc”, the lyrics were definitely thoughtful, but kept the songs viby
