Didn't expect much, but not bad.
It's good. Nice production. Sounds like a Prince record. Probably deserves a 4. But it ain't getting that from me.
Some great tracks some okay tracks and some meh for a solid 3 stars.
Crazy? Not really. Sexy? Better believe it brothers and sisters! Cool? As fuck! Very good album, beautiful soul inspired hip hop tinged pop album.
I mean it's not that bad: waterfalls always bangs whenever it's played but other than that it was just bleh. Couldn't see myself listening to the album again and I don't think many people would. The epitome of saved by one song.

Oh well... I'm not gonna deny it, I was about to dismiss this album as something that probably aged horribly before listening to it. But it turns out some aspects of said album are considerably fresher than what I had envisioned at first. What I liked the most is how the production and instrumentation on this thing were subtle and understated enough to elicit genuine interest from folks that are not necessarily part of TLC's target demographic. I thought the production values would have all the self-aggrandizing elements of 90s r'n'b that could have turned such pre-neosoul endeavors into a cheesefest from our current vantage point. Turns out the album didn't have those flaws at all. Actually, *CrazySexyCool* is prophetic in the way it mixed pure hip-hop elements into its mix (I wasn't bothered by the many interludes, for instance). If only its second side had been as effective as the first, it would clearly be an LP that would need to be included in a list of "essential" albums. Unfortunately, if you take the list of highlights from this thing, they're all crammed in its first part: "Creep", "Kick Your Game", "Diggin' On You", "Red Light Special"... And of course, there's smooth and catchy "Waterfalls". I like the tune well enough, even if there's something a bit odd in its chorus : the first lines soar like not many other r'n'b hits, but I think its conclusion is a little abrupt and even falls flat on its face. It's how the melody ends, for one thing. But it's also because that "moving too fast" line doesn't rhyme with anything else before, which is quite bizarre in my book. Do people notice these things? I do. And it's relatively grating to my ears. Maybe I'm splitting hair here--"Waterfalls" still deserves to be remembered--but I'm bringing this out because this particular flaw, suggesting last minute-changes, or "writing-in-comitees" shenanigans, is found in quite a few other tunes from the LP--ones less catchy that "Waterfalls" to boot. Other vocal lines *do* end up clumsily in *CrazySexyCool*. And lyrically, the mindset of an "emancipated" girl is explored well enough, but it's sometimes conveyed through obvious clichés and tired turns of phrases: "Let's make love all night, *yaddi yadda*". You probably know the drill by now. Not that there couldn't have been ways to explore those topics in a straightforward manner that could still be interesting on a lyrical viewpoint. Contrary to other reviewers in here, I have absolutely zero complaints about the topics addressed in the songs. Women expressing their lustful desires should not elicit any more eyebrow raising movements than if men express such topics, period. Funny how tons of albums where the latter case happens rarely trigger any negative mention from reviewers (here and elsewhere), and then when women do it, it becomes a problem. And kudos to that one reviewer saying he has a problem with TLC's lyrics, but that it's the same for men tackling those sex topics. At least that person has a cohesive take about the whole issue. But... yeah, well, all of this is interesting to an extent, but as I said before, I think the second part of the LP is pretty lackluster anyway, first in terms of catchiness, and also in its production values--clearly less stellar than on the first side. "Switch" is pretty good, even if it won't keep me up at night. But closer "Sumthing Wicked This Way Comes", with its fake alt-rock guitar riffs, is awkward as f*ck--and no amount of Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced" apparent samples on top of it will make me change my mind about how clumsy the whole thing sounds--nor would an early featuring of a very young Andre 3000 (of Outkast fame) as endearing as that detail is. As for the rest of the second side's tracks (a bland sugary ballad here, a dancefloor cut going through the motions there), it's not even worth discussing about. And yes, that probably includes the Prince-penned "If I Was A Girlfriend". It's an extraordinary song for sure, but here it's turned into a pretty unimaginative cover version that adds absolutely nothing to the original. Plus, TLC's trio have wonderful vocal skills, that goes without saying (you're not in that type of band through mere luck), yet even such skills can't make you forget a vocal performance by "The Artist/Love Symbol a.k.aThe Minneapolis Purple Diminutive Genius". And what a performance. By all means, listen to the original version if you haven't already. So yeah, CrazySexyCool is a mixed bag overall. I have some sympathy for part of what it does, but it probably won't be in my own list of keepers. Unless, miraculously, I find some use for it at the very last minute... 3/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential" albums, translating to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes (5+3). Heavy, heavy innuendo, but the melodies were nice. Instrumentals were softer than I expected, which is a nice twist.

I veered between hating this and almost liking a few songs, especially the last one. I just didn't like this stuff when I was at high school and it's hard to detach. But these obviously very talented ladies were a product of their time and social milieu. They made some good music. And said Sexy a lot.

This is probably the most 3 album i've heard yet on here. I love a nice 90s hip-hop/rnb beat, and there's some great ones on here especially near the start, but there's a lot that aged like milk. The interludes too are so unnecessary and i'll never understand why 90s albums were full of them. The lyrics are pretty straightforward, not really anything too deep, but the choruses and fun and they have great voices. Might come back to a couple songs off here but that's it really. Don't regret hearing it.

It's a smooth and almost elegant album, but drags on a bit after the hot start in the first half. TLC is more than just Waterfalls though, which is my real takeaway from this. Good work, but I won't be itching to come back to it anytime soon.
This started off so strong and lost me the second half, was feeling a 4 but it fell off.

I'm a big TLC fan, but I'm much more familiar with their album Fanmail. The album cover is awesome though, definitely a top one I've seen from the Jenny.
Highlights: "Kick Your Game," "Waterfalls," "Red Light Special," "Take Our Time" You just cannot talk about the teeny bopper superstars of the next ten years without this album. The direct influence on Britney Spears especially is undeniable. What's funny is the changes from late 80s pop are so subtle; there are relics of electropop lying around for sure, like the comical vocaloid portamento on "Diggin on You". Maybe their cover of Prince is telling. Maybe it's the envelope funk timbres and heavy tempos that gave it a fresh feel, or the heavy use of jazzy sampling that wouldn't feel out of place in ATCQ. That said, not even close to a masterpiece album. You can tell production was chaotic, and the strong sense of style doesn't prevent songs from dithering in cheap sleaze. Very uneven, but definitely a turning point for pop music.

While I really enjoyed the two big hits on this album, I couldn't fully engage with the rest of the songs on here. I think that kind of music is just not for me. I think it was decent overall, but I'll stick to TLC's hits.
The singles are good, "Waterfalls" has wonderful production, but the album cuts I think are going to take me longer to crack into. Not my favorite album in this style, but it's all pretty good. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could.
They are an iconic female R&B group and as far as the genre goes this is a very good album. That said, I was pretty bored of a lot of the same sound by the end. Still a good listen and Waterfalls is great.

hello nineties! lots of memorabilia, but in 2023 doesn't feel as groundbreaking as it was, which is hard to keep in mind for so many of these albums
Well constructed R&B songs with some indisputable bangers. I would say this music was constructed to be the background tunes for many a saucy night, but includes some deeper consciousness tracks to explore culture. Overall fun music, and well processed and mastered tracks. The rating simply reflects my perception of this genre. Not something i seek to play regularly.
The intro is sick. Followed by a real disappointment. But aside from "Creep", the album is pretty decent, I vibed to it.
Chillin and enjoyable
Felt like I was in scenes from a nineties romcom and/or chic click throughout this.
Decent album. Girl group pop before it became mass-produced cheese. Sexy-Interlude was like being slapped in the face with a freshly-caught salmon.

Was half expecting something like the black Spice Girls here. But to be honest there’s more to this record than meets the eye. Some interesting production, catchy choruses and biting humour make this a really fun listen. There’s no denying this record has dated a lot, but there’s a lot of merit in these songs. “Waterfalls” is the obvious classic, but “Kick Your Game” was another standout for me. Colour me surprised, this album was good.

I’m supposed to say that this album is Crazy, Sexy, and Cool right? That’s the low hanging fruit review to give. Waterfalls is an undeniable pop cultural phenomenon that I will always remember from my 90s youth. I’m not much of a fan otherwise though. Talented women, love their style, but I’m not interested in a full album. Respect for the great hits on here though.
Best Song: Waterfalls. I fucking love this song. The hooks, the lyrics, that chorus. I legitimately think this is a perfect song. Worst Song: Case of the Fake People. This kind of diatribe against "fake people" feels really dated now. Overall: Some brilliant tracks on here, but the album is weighed down by the unnecessary and too-frequent interludes. Either expand them into full songs or leave them out, in my opinion.
Absolutely a decent record, but nothing more than this honestly.
Some undeniable hits, but too much fluff to garner a higher rating. Should be about six tracks shorter. 3/5

Some terrible skits hold back a pretty great pop/r&b album
This was a brilliant album in terms of consistency, but it was a little bit long for me, probably because I'm not super into this genre and have some difficulty connecting with it. Despite this, I did add multiple songs from this onto my playlist so I must be starting to get it :)
CrazySexyCool is a decent album, though 9am on a working weekday probably isn't the intended listening hour :D I remember bits of it from the 90s and it's really good in places, but quite once-paced and I'm fairly sure every album that has ever added skits and interludes could bin them all off and nobody would notice.
Sounds like a 2000s girl band with some edge, which isn't bad for a record from 1994. Chasing Waterfalls is the song that everyone will know, but the album as a whole has a fair bit more edge to it. Flits between R&B and hip hop, does both of them pretty well. 3/5, annoying amount of interludes that never really hit.
I remember this album well from when I was a teenager because my sister played it on repeat. Waterfalls was a jam back then, it was on every radio station constantly. This album is super thirsty in that the dominant topic of conversation is sex. The music is a good blend of R&B, pop, and 90's hip hop. I really like the harmonies that the three women can achieve. I found that the first half of this album was better than the second half. Favourite songs: Waterfalls, Red Light Special (great guitar solo in this porno groove sounding song), Switch, Diggin' On You, Kick Your Game, Creep Least favourite songs: Let's Do It Again, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Take Our Time, and all the Interludes throughout (Intro-lude, CrazySexyCool - Interlude, Intermission-lude, Sexy - Interlude, and Can I Get A Witness - Interlude). These frequent interludes throughout the album remind me of Lauryn Hill's album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and like that album, I find they distract from the overall flow of the record. 3/5

I was honestly surprised at how good the first half is. The interludes didn’t bother me, the productions and beats are killer and there’s a fair amount of bangers. Then the second half kicks in and I slowly lose interest. I don’t particularly care for their vocals when they rap and the songwriting is simply more boring. Just as I was about to almost defend the inclusion of interludes, “Sexy-Interlude” kicks in. Oh how I love me some potty humor; just what I needed.. Fuck you whoever thought of this. The last interlude is likewise about 2 minutes too long. Luckily André 3000 swoops in and saves the day on the awesome last song - this offers just enough redemption, along with the first class production on this whole thing, to deserve a 3.

I expected a rap/hip-hop album, but was pleasantly surprised. The songs mostly are R&B and genereally flow nicely in the background. Waterfalls is the obvisous standout. There is some rapping, but it's not as annoying as on many other albums. 3/5

A good example of the 90s R&B scene. Liked a couple of tracks, but wondered if having more than 12 songs of the same thing was necessary
Wow, this was a bit of a letdown. I was expecting more. It sounds dated and like typical 90's R&B cheese (where they took all the 80's synth and fake instruments and tried to make it sound cooler). These ladies were definitely better than cheese but this album is average at best.
Sexy vibe, smooth and slick production. This was a really talented group of performers and this album was fire in ’94. Even I owned a copy, and I was never really into this kind of music. The hip hop underpinnings of these songs that made them sound so cool and fresh at the time make them sound somewhat dated now. The best songs ultimately are the ones that go more for straight R&B. The subject matter sometimes tends to be oversexed, which gets tiring. A little goes a long way with that sort of thing. As for the interludes, there are too many of them and they add nothing to the album. Rounded up to a 3 because when they’re good, TLC hits it out of the park. Iconic album cover. I've definitely never listened all the way through but I like the TLC I've heard. Happy to give it a listen. It's a bit one dimensional in that it's definitely all about the singing. The backing tracks are just that, just the vaguest support to the vocals; indeed I occasionally wished the producer put the backing even further back. That said, the songs are smoooth, gorgeous, and drip with sexy confidence garnished with a cheeky wink. The interludes are a bit jarring and break up the flow; sexy-interlude in particular completely breaks the mood. That's probably the point, otherwise the album would be one big blur with a few standout moments. Actually, thinking about it more, that would be better. Overall the album gets into its zone and stays there. A good groove, enjoyable listen. 3 stars as is, 4 without the interludes. Waterfalls is, of course, a standout tune.
Boy this was huge in 1994. I must have seen that Waterfalls video a hundred times but I don't think I ever listened to the while album before. Dated in places but holds up. RIP Phife on the intro track!
Waterfalls is just fantastic.
Creep, Red Light Special and Waterfalls are enjoyable. The other tracks lean way too heavily into the crazysexycool motif as if it is enough to make it great. It is pretty disposable, though Switch and Sumthin' Wicked pull the album out of it's nosedive towards the end.

I have no problem with this
It was more funky than I expected which is a welcome shift from the plant pop groups that would dominate the late 90s. This music was at times, funny, sexual, and socially conscious. I can see why it's a celebrated album. It just doesn't do much for me personally, but I appreciate it for what it is. It does run a bit long and is a bit over produced for my taste

I bought this CD when it came out, haven't listened to it complete in about 25 years. Damn good 90s Hip-Hop Soul. Forgot about how Lisa Lopes was the crazy in the Crazy Sexy Cool, but her talent was taken from us too soon.
… some fun tunes … titillating but the imperatives get a little tiresome
Essentially a t-boz solo album with minor contributions from chilli and left eye. Left eye was having lots of problems at this time so barely features and I dont think chilli was prominent on any or their albums. Great production and great but sparse features but really only 6 out of 16 are worth a re listen and only waterfalls and creep at a stretch are really good so this is a solid 3. Waterfalls is still a great song.
Soooo... which one is favorite? You like Chili, don't you? I'm a Left Eye fan. Why doesn't T-Boz get any love... I think I'm the only one that didn't buy this album when it came out. And, why would I? All the ladies I knew were playing this nonstop and the Waterfalls video (great video BTW) was played ever 15 mins. on MTV. Though this is the first time I've listened to it all the way thru, it's apparent that the album was intended to be a hit in itself and not just an album that had some hit songs. I enjoyed the 'interludes' and respites between tracks. Maybe I overlooked it in the '90s but it seems like a different approach to making music, perhaps novel for the times. In the 90's you threw in a CD and were basically a captive audience. No Spotify to immediately toggle between bands/albums and because it plays so well, it's easy enough to play it again. I enjoyed it today. It's very well put together, but too much a throwback to the 90's to get more love from me...
Kan ändå instämma att det är ganska galet, sexigt och coolt. Blev orolig när jag hörde första låten som i själva verket var något av ett intro. Den fick mig att tro att det skulle vara väldigt tung hip-hop som jag inte brukar tycka så väl om. Dock var albumet något helt annat, lite lugnare tempo och genomgående sköna vibbar. Många gånger påminner det mig om underbara Alicia Keys. Sättet låten bara lugnt flyter på, en bra sångerska och ett inblandande av en kraftfull körsång lugnar mig, kanske då av anledning av att jag håller Alicia så högt. Men efter den initiala chocken alltså detta en riktig pleasure att lyssna på. Jag är nöjd. Bäst: (Vet inte)

I wrote a lot about TLC. And then forgot to save it. Doh! This album is "cool." But I think its coolness may have been heightened by the time period in which it came out. It was peak MTV, and the music videos from this album, especially "Waterfalls," are intrinsically tied to these songs. It was also a time when women in music were openly and boldly talking about their sexuality - we wouldn't have WAP today if it wasn't for TLC and Salt n Pepa. (Credit to Kate on that one.) This album is "sexy." And it's in the sultry songs where it excels the best, and those type of songs are also best suited for the voices of T-Boz and Chilli. I was a little worried at first on "Creep," where I was really underwhelmed by the vocals. They're not amazing singers, just good, and some of these songs that utilized their voices better than others. However, as good as this album might be for turning the lights down low, it probably killed the mood with the funniest bit on the album, the prank call of "Sexy-Interlude" that ends with a toilet flushing. This album is "crazy" too. Or at least, TLC's story is. From ditching their founding third member, to drama between group members, to Left Eye almost burning her house down setting fire to a bathtub full of her abusive boyfriend's shoes. Left Eye, by the way, is the real star and stand-out here. Her verses are the best part of every song. Overall, this is the first album that I've had to consider how much (if at all) I'll let the nostalgia factor influence my reviews. "Crazysexycool" is not as good as I remembered. It has a few very fondly remembered hit singles, and while I get why it was a big hit at the time, it doesn't hold up quite as well.

I once purchased this album through the BMG music subscription service. Side note: my parents did not police what albums I bought at all. Additional side note: this was when I bought albums entirely based on the singles, which is not a great way to acquire quality albums. I don’t remember ever listening to anything but the singles on CrazySexyCool, but still 14 year old me was so with it! Creep and Waterfalls stand the test of time as excellent songs. Waterfalls was also timely for me in the mid-1990s. A few short years later my town switched area codes and had to start using all 10 digits for a phone call. I bring this up because I could no longer use the 7 digit numbers that I was used to for my whole life up to that point. Yet another side note: I must recognize that these are lyrics from Weird Al’s parody Phony Calls from his 1996 Bad Hair Day album that came out the year before the area code switch. Im laughing hard at myself because Weird Al is so good I actually thought these were the TLC lyrics until I double checked just before submitting my rating. I sure hope Weird Al is on the 1001 album list. He deserves it. I recognize and like Busta Rhymes on Can I Get A Witness (Interlude). André 3000 also shows up on the last track. Both their appearances are interesting in retrospect because TLC was likely the more well known act and helped propel their careers a bit. Overall this is a solid album by the best selling American female group of all time (#2 worldwide behind the spice girls). I forgot that they were that big. I only remember the singles and that Left Eye burned Andre Rison’s house 6 months before this album was released. Good times.

“CrazySexyCool” by TLC (1994) An album that is like window shopping in Amsterdam. This hyper-produced girl group puts out a sound that is interesting for low-pitched vocal register—a feature that presents musical problems, but is pleasing enough. Lyrically reinforcing every embarrassingly slutty stereotype in the urban lexicon, it’s clear what and to whom they (their managers) are trying to sell. But the listener forms no connection to the artists as persons. This is poverty. But it’s crazy; it’s sexy; it’s cool. Truth in advertising. I’m happy to take a hit. 3/5

I remember liking this a lot more when it first came out. Waterfalls is still a great track, but the rest of the album just passed me by in the background without really letting me know it was there. Shame, as I’d not hear this is years and quite fancied hearing it again. Suspect it may be another 20 years plus before I do so again, if ever.
Unfortunately much of the album is not super memorable or interesting outside of Waterfalls and Creep. I guess the skits are memorable too but they're not very good. The songs are also often held back by feeling pretty dated.
This feels really basic in a lot of ways. Some of these beats honestly feel like I could've learned to play them with a week of training. I get that this is going for a vibe but there's almost nothing here. Waterfalls is catchy. This should've been a couple of singles instead of an album.
As pop songs, I like Waterfalls and don't mind Creep. I might not understand it yet, but for me there is no soul in this style of production. As an album aside from it's singles it's forgettable.

I really wish I was getting more out of listening to these older pop albums in full. The songs everyone knows still hit, but everything else just feels like worse versions of those 2 or 3 songs. This one in particular had way too many skits!

Manufactured pop artists have a weird place in music. I already realized that bands like the Monkees hadn't evolved like the other bands I listened to, and I was sort of aware that some of the oldies music I listened to wasn't made the same way. There became a huge prevalence of manufactured music as you enter the 80s and 90s., as the Spice Girls suddenly were everywhere and then, not that long after, we got the boy bands and we got the wave of female teen pop stars. And by the late 90’s a majority of pop music was manufactured. But, through it all, it never occurred to me that TLC were a manufactured pop group. Was it the way they looked? Was it the fact that one of them rapped? Was it because I just really didn't pay much attention to hip hop and R&B? Whatever the reason, I thought they were an organic group. Of course, they are not. They are as manufactured as any of the numerous '90s groups, so much so that their original leader didn't survive the process that formed them. Does that matter? Before, I would have said "absolutely". As of now, I'm pretty sure I don't care anywhere near as much. It should come as no surprise that the strongest song here is the most famous one, and that the singles are mostly stronger than everything else. "Waterfalls" feels basically far superior to everything else here, both in terms of how catchy it is and how (relatively) reflective it is lyrically. Still, as manufactured groups go, the remaining material is decent, and I don't know that there's anything here that stands out as being as bad as anything on the other manufactured pop albums I'm familiar with. And I'd probably go ahead and say this was one of the better records I've heard by one of these prefab pop groups, if not for the interludes. If you were to play a drinking game where you drink every time at least two of the words "crazy", "sexy" and "cool" were used in any combination...well, you would be quite hammered by the end of this record. I get that the title is some statement about these women, and they want to reinforce that, but the interludes in particular take it to ridiculous levels. It gets quite annoying. On the whole, I could really do without the interludes, as with basically every '90s R&B record, and I won't be choosing to listen to it any time soon, but it's fine for what it is.
Not really the artist’s fault, but this genre of music is like my least favorite sounding music of all time so wasn’t really great for me.
I mean, it's a'ight, like. But with most R&B, it gets boring real quick.
Unsurprisingly, a project with P Diddy does not have anyone considering anything but the oldest topic of mankind. And considering he is credited for some of the beats and instrumentals, I won't go praising them here. This is an album for teenage girls obsessed with men and finding "the right one" but who still enjoy a toilet skit. Only the last song where andre 3000 makes an appearance changes that up but by then it's too late.

It's a pretty chill late-Sunday-afternoon listen. And at this very moment, they're singing "Sunday afternoon" on "Diggin' on You." Too R&B for my liking, though. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day718.

Meh. For me, "Waterfalls" is the only thing that has stood the test of time from this album. I wasn't much of a fan of this album when it came out in 1994, and this re-listen hasn't done much to change that. I honestly don't recall "Creep" being a thing back in 1994-95. It is what it is, a 90s R&B record. I was surprised to learn how many people worked on this album. Passing along royalty earnings must be a nightmare of paperwork. Favorites: "Diggin' on You" and "Waterfalls" I enjoyed the funkiness of "Take Our Time" but the horny lyrics are bit of a turn off. A rare example of a popular album that I don't think was actually all that essential in the grand scheme of things. Not in the way that say Seal's self-titled 1994 album was in R&B.

Highlight: Waterfalls In a nutshell: girls to the front. This is a tough one. It's the first appearance of Southern (via Atlanta) hip-hop on the list, their music is good as a pop product yet they are most remembered for Waterfalls than the full album internationally. It's a pity the trio were ripped off. Overall: 4/10

Pegajoso como los perros que se montan en la esquina, porque en escencia el álbum es así, prácticamente casi todas las canciones hablan sobre sexo y lo mucho que lo disfrutan las cantantes de TLC, no me es molesto ni me genera incomodidad, pero 56 minutos cantando sobre lo mismo se vuelve aburrido y cringe por momentos. La producción está muy bien, atada a su tiempo eso sí, pero a veces se alargan los temas innecesariamente o meten interludios a cada rato, de los 16 temas que tiene 5 son interludios. Objetivamente está bien pero a mí me gustó hasta ahí.

I don´t get caught by this album... pop music is just not for me. anyway i have to admit that i liked a lot the track number 7. not so much to say, i can get why some people love it. This job sounds solid, well produced, it mix some hip hop with some slow funky grooves and some jazz. being absolutely imparcial, and not going for my personal taste, i think its a 2.5 out of 5 well deserved, but i can´t put halfs here, so im more on the 2 side than a 3.

More generic 90s hip hop on this list. I really like one of the girls’ voice, and she sings so infrequently that it’s like a nice treat whenever it comes up.
I know way more about TLC than I ever planned thanks to MTV and VH1. It’s not really my vibe, but I can appreciate it.
The Principal at our primary school was known to give the boys a squeeze on the thigh or a gentle cup of the bum while boosting you up a tree. Nobody minded. It was fun and games old-school paedo-ing. No harm, no foul. Anyway, my friends and I made up a song about him to the chorus of TLC’s waterfalls. It went like this: “Don’t go chasing little boys Please stick to the wretched old hags that you’re use to” That’ll be all for today, suppressed memories, that’ll be all.
The "R&B/hip hop soul girl group" description had me recoiling when this first popped up. I actually didn't hate it anywhere near as much as I expected to, but there's little here which appeals to me or that felt like it's endured the test of time to warrant sustained inclusion. This would have sounded slick for the time, I'm sure, but stylistically it's very dated and very safe.

When CrazySexyCool came out, my daughter was 13 and really wanted the album. As responsible parents, we checked it over and didn't see a Parental Advisory label, so we let her buy the CD. Big mistake. She became completely obsessed with it, playing it nonstop. I got so tired of hearing those same tracks over and over. Personally, I still know every song from all that repetition, and for a pop/hip-hop album, it's actually not bad at all. It's just not my style, and forcing myself to listen to it again was a real struggle.

I really like Waterfalls, but unfortunately the rest of the album is just generic RnB Hip Hop whining.
My wife would disagree wholeheartedly with me, but a lot of '90s R&B just leaves me cold, and Jermaine Dupri's production exemplifies the reasons why. You know what you're getting the moment the track starts, because it rarely deviates, and almost every song follows a boilerplate that is exhibited in a thousand other songs. Too me it sounds very monotonous. I'm not really a fan of T-Boz's singing, either, and she handles the majority of verses on most tracks. Not that there aren't pleasures here. The cover of "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is nice and the closer "Sumthin' Wicked This Way Comes" has an intensity the rest of the album is missing. The harmonies between T-Boz, Chili and Debra Killings (who handles Left Eye's singing parts) sound nice and Left Eye's (surprisingly infrequent) raps are occasionally snappy, but most of the music barely rises above a languid pace and T-Boz's sultry whisper. I know a lot of people enjoyed this album and I think that's great, nobody should get mad about the opinion of one person, but I prefer my music to be a little more energetic and adventurous, and that just isn't what this album provides.

It’s hard to believe this is one of the biggest selling for group albums. Or the biggest, even. It was fine for what it was for a while, but the tipping point was If I Was Your Girlfriend. Covering a Prince song is risky to begin with, no or least because Prince didn’t like anyone to cover his stuff. But also because, really, how do you top him? Even worse, though, was the choice of song. It makes no sense sung by a woman it is specifically from a male point of view and it is ruined by a female lead vocal. After that I was done with this album. I continued to listen, but what I would have tolerated as ok was now annoying. I was particularly increasingly annoyed by the interlude segments, which this list has taught me is incredibly common in hip hop and R&B albums. It can be a cool effect, but has been terribly overdone. Now anytime I see it on an album I cringe. Also, skipped Scrubs. I worked in a pharmacy when that song came out and it was just me and the pharmacist every other weekend. She listened to the top 40 station that played it almost hourly and if I ever hear it again my brain may begin to bleed.

Keep in mind that The Supremes were at their prime some 25 to 30 years before CrazySexyCool came out. I think this likely sounded absolutely great in the mid 1990s the talent is there, but this is about the most unrelatable music I have heard in almost a year of taking part in this project. CrazySexyCool is a tough album to rate. I'm used to rating STRICTLY on how much I enjoyed the music, and I didn't have much fun with this one, but I can't give it a 1/5 because as dated as it is well again TLC was overflowing with talent, but this stuff is just not my cup of tea- at all. To the right listener this is a strong 5/5 but seeing how I couldn't wait for it to end I can't go higher than a 2/5. Waterfalls was the only song that I almost enjoyed and would sound great at a dance club to this very day & beyond but I'm not at a dance club, I'm not sipping on a $25 cocktail that I didn't pay for and I don't look or feel hot so sorry ladies but as Hilary Duff once said, this is so yesterday.
