Maso
I could see this being a 3/5 on another day but wasn't doing anything for me this time around.
what did I just listen to
The ren faire called, they want their little guys back
Ugly cover. 1. It's an ok song. Can be fun. However, I almost hate it. After a couple of listens, I got used to his singing voice. I hate it less. 2. Actually not bad. 3. See 1. 4. This song is trying too hard to be deep. 5. Ok. 6. this isn't bad. 7. Deep-eaque. Otherwise acceptable. Sort of. However, very skippable. 8. Same. These songs remind me of Bard songs. I don't really care for the tale. 9. The title track. So hippie. It's ok. Skip though. 10. Kinda waiting for this to end. No, not kinda. I'm waiting for this to end. Skip. 11. Ok, I guess. OVERALL: This is a skip for me. I'm fine having listened to it but not necessary an album to listen to before I die. It's a no for me, bro.
Ooft, psych has to be one of my least favourite genres. Why have they all got to be so goddamn WHIMSICAL. It's just dreadful. The vocals are Bob Dylan without the wit. Maybe you had to be there at the time to appreciate it.
very derivative — mainly i’m giving it a lower rating because i absolutely didn’t need to hear it before i die and it really rips off so many other better albums. not the worst on this list by a long shot, but very uninspired
eh
What's the reasoning behind this being here? Absolutely nothing noteworthy. ⭐⭐1/2
I normally love 60’s psychedelia but this is pedestrian stuff
Kinda boring. Was hoping for some garage rock. Strumy acoustic stuff.
ok for background music.
There is nothing this album was doing that more famous musicians of the late 60s weren’t doing better. And then the album got to my old Kentucky home and I couldn’t do it anymore. why?
Dad- 4 Mom- 5 Mike- NA Lori- 4 Michael- 6 Miles- NA Cole- NA Avg- 4.75
Yawn fucking boring hippies.
2 stars
Grei start. God vibe. Noen låter lenger uti som blei litt slitsomme. Trekker ned helhetsinntrykket. Skulle ellers vært vurdert ett knepp opp.
I really struggled with this one and I didn’t like it. The singer does that Bob Dylan inflection in his singing, which is an unnecessary affectation. The album is described as mystical folk rock, but that hobbits and elves vibe doesn’t really kick in until after Magic Hollow, but there doesn’t seem like the band feels any conviction to it. It should sound a bit whimsical, like early Pink Floyd, or a less committed Led Zeppelin , but it doesn’t. This makes the album start to feel really long on side two. The album floats along at a fairly sedate pace, but while the band plays with the folk rock genre, and pulling out the harpsichord and psychedelic strings, it’s a pretty lacklustre display.
Meh. I *should* like this but just kinda feels mid
Kind of forgetful tunes, not offensive though - it was average to listen to.
only 28 minutes? Guess that wiped out their creativity. Eh, didn't know them prior. Usual late 60's folk/psychedelic rock. Yawn
Never heard this album before and I found it to be totally forgettable.
Trur da va greit nok, huske kje
not my jam
Overall: 3/10 This may have been exciting and fresh when it came out but I mostly find it generic and annoying. It sounds like the vocalist is trying way too hard to be Bob Dylan and it just doesn't work for me. The orchestration is the highlight for me as it actually adds a lot and the songs would feel pretty empty otherwise. At least it was short. Never revisiting this one. Fav Song: It Won't Get Better Least Fav Song: The Wolf of Velvet Fortune
2.5 not bad but also not very memorable
Decent at times, annoying at times…
meh 2/5
Dylan-esque, but not nearly as interesting. Overall, it’s just okay. 2.5/5 Won’t listen again
A poor-man's lovechild of Bob Dylan and The Beatles.
Sooo annoying
Weird album. That's it. That's all.
"Triangle" is not an album that catches your attention at first glance. The songs are somewhere between good and boring, making the album forgettable after a while. In the end, it's just another album among thousands.
Bob Dylan wannabes in terms of lyrics. Quite boring
Kind of an odd combination of psychedelic-baroque rock with elements of fantasy and whimsy that may be unique at the time, but feels weird and strange. Musically, it's okay, I can overlook the lyrics, but it's Dylan-esque, poor-man's Kinks or Beatles sound doesn't pull me in and keep me interested. I'd rather listen to the real Dylan and pretty much anything from the Kinks than Triangle. I'm open to listening to anything on this list, but this is forgettable and not essential and Beau Brummels must have had better albums, right?
Very high Beatle-core vibes. Not really adding anything to the music. 2/5
Why?
I didn't pay much attention to the Beau Brummels back in the day. This album just seems dated psychedelia to me now. Interesting contributions from Van Dyke Parks and Randy Newman. The use of French horns and bass trombone is interesting as well. One of the horn players, Gale Robinson, was my teacher for a short time in the early 70s. Who knew?
Meh
2/5 It's not entirelly bad. But it's not good either. Something to have as background music when you want to concentrate on something else and not the music, but don't want to be in complete silence.
Not precisely my cup of tea. It just comes off as generic pop of the time rather than anything essential. 2/5
I enjoyed Painter of Women, but otherwise this is the sound of one of the background artists from Inside Llewyn Davis.
Kind of an interesting set of framing here, the band is apparently known for solidifying the "San Francisco rock sound" but at first everyone thought they were part of the British Invasion so of course 1001lbums has their "country" album on the list? At least it was short, I did like a couple of the tracks but it's kind of hard to make an un-fun version of "My Old Kentucky Home" [editor's note: the writer was reminded of the blackface cover in Mad Men, that version was very un-fun, sorry about that]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychedelic_rock I had to jump in to the definitions of "psychedelic rock" for this one. Basically, any musician that uses LSD and a guitar can be labeled psychedelic rock. This is really shitty psychedelic rock made much worse by applying a 'folk' label to it. Not sure how much LSD the music reviewers were eating back then, but it was definitely more than the musicians. I much prefer the modern psychedelic rock to this.
Isn’t there enough psychedelic folk/rock on the list? “Magic Hollow” is decent, but the rest is entirely forgettable.
Completely unspectacular. It's kind of impressive how with songs this short, some of them still suffer from pacing issues.
Mediocre at best. The most forgettable thing I’ve listened to on this list.
I should have known by the band name that this venture wasn’t going to turn out great. I was fooled albeit briefly with the opening track “Are You Happy”. Then it turned probably 1 minute into the song. This is druggy Bowie mixed with Syd Barrett Pink Floyd and early Dylan without the deep poetic verses. We are not in FKA Twigs territory with this one but it’s close. I’m moving on, 6 songs in. That’s serviceable
Not a huge fan of the warbling vocal delivery. Other than that it's okay 60's rock. Nothing too consequential for me, neither bad or great. Didn't really grab my attention on the first listen until the last 2 songs....... On the 2nd listen, the last 5 were far stronger tunes than the first 6. Not sure, but I'm guessing side 1 and side 2? Side 2 is more magical and twinkly with more elaborate and delicate compositions.
It had its moments but they were few and far between.
Incredibly dated Folk-Rock kinda deal? Usually yes, this time no
..
Half the album is a bad B Dylan impression, the other half an airy, twangy flurry of strings and wobbly voices. I can't stand Bob Dylan. And the trippy isn't trippy enough. They gotta smoke more of that goo-goo-gajoob shit.
Just really really meh. Wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever heard but Absolutely NOTHING stood out to me
Bland & boring but listenable
Could this sound any more 60s!? Found it a bit annoying, overly cheerful and a bit jarring. Maybe that's just me being grumpy in the morning... The 'Wolf of Merry Fortune' is so odd, the lyrics sound like they were written by a child. Is this a spoof? I can't tell if this is serious... It's the only song I like off the album though- I think it could be an excellent feature in a surrealist play. 'DELIGHHHT!' Album cover is a masterpiece, bonus points for that.
Well now I know what it would sound like if Bob Dylan could sing, but still put that stupid affect on his pronunciation.
Not completely terrible. But annoying vibrato/vocal technique, and mostly forgettable songs. 5/10.
This is a less interesting Donovan.
2/5
can only take this in small doses, not a whole album
1/23/25. Never heard of this group, pretty decent 60s folk sound. Just okay to me.
Almost salvaged at the end, but this is a pretty bland listen
Not very interesting 60s folk-rock, struggling to see what makes it essential. That second to last track kind of went hard though.
This was like Bob Dylan but good
Like Bob Dylan but worse.
This is an album from July 1967 that I hadn’t previously heard of, which is probably because it was overshadowed by a certain other contemporary album. Apparently they picked their name so they would be filed next to the Beatles. It’s quite unusual though and an interesting listen - it starts like a low key Bob Dylan singing country, then brings in a French accordion and veers off into some folk psychedelia. It’s all fine, but not particularly memorable.
this album at times tried to sound like bob dylan at other times tried to sound like a folk act you would hear at a renaissance festival… and not really sounding like either one of them. this was bad, kids.
This felt longer than 28 minutes
It's fine, but kind of cheesy. I'd never heard of the band before, so that's interesting. They're very standard early-60s rock, if somebody put them on side-by-side I'd have a hard time telling them apart from the Hollies. As with a lot of recordings from that era the production quality is pretty rough too, they had not quite figured out how to make pristine recordings yet. They have some nice songs on here though.
Generic 60s white guy rock. Uninspired
Paul Simon and Bob Dylan
1960s stuff, again, didn't really mesh with it.
After every song, I struggled to remember what I was listening to and why. Not obnoxious or difficult to get through, but textbook forgettable. 2/5
Boring, nothing special here.
listened 2 weeks ago and forgot to rate, couldnt remember anything from this project... which isnt really a good sign
What a snoozefest. It's almost impressive how they managed to make an entire album where absolutely nothing happens.
Yet another forgettable band from the 60's that I will never listen to again.
No good, not bad.
Fine but meh. Aware of its significance as the blueprint for the San Fransisco sounds but almost sounds like a pastiche.
#421. This is a few guys that want to be Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, and the Beatles all at once. Unfortunately for us all, they're not as good as any of them. This album is just eminently forgettable 60s hippie rock. 2/5: meh
Singer has a funny accent put on for a few songs at the start, which isn’t great. Beige.
Country/folk that just wasn’t for me
Not really my thing, but this was a fun listen. Inventive and varied, it has a few songs I really liked and some I really didn't. I'm not a fan of the tremulous vocals that dominate much of the album so this knocks the overall rating down a bit.
Если бы было 10 звезд, поставила бы 4. Вчера слушала вроде норм, сегодня ни одной песни не помню
Oh, so hippie. In a renaissance fair style.
Impressively good record/sound for 60s. Not my style unfortunately.
Boring and repetitive. An extra star because it was short.
I had high hopes for this one going in. I was already familiar with two Beau Brummels songs, and I like them, although neither of them are on here. I didn’t mind this album really, but it was just nothing special. I have no idea why it’s on this list. Oh, and It Won’t Get Better is such a stupid song
I have a high tolerance for stuff like this, but it was just so corny. Wanted more razzle dazzle. I didn't find it offensive, and I really loved Nine Pound Hammer, but I won't be picking the album up again. 2.5 stars.
Maybe good if you’re on your way to renaissance faire?
Pleasant enough folk-rock with a twang of country but nothing to write home about
Beau bollocks
Doesn't add much to the 60s psychedelic folk-rock genre, and the Dylan-esque.style didn't really work.
Bit too much vibrato vocals for my liking, thankfully it was a short album.
The fact that the whole Beatles-esque minstrel sound was ever popular is an enduring mystery to me.
Wannabe Beatles
Nooope, next. Hed mir direkt ami-wiehnachts-lieder vibes inegschneid, also im ne negative sinn.
could i write poetry to this? n
A Bob Dylan imitation with psychedelic music. Notable mostly for the appearance of famed studio musicians Carol Kaye, Van Dyke Parks, James Burton, and convicted murderer Jim Gordon. Check out M.O.D.'s song, "Jim Gordon" for more about that.
I forgot what this sounded like immediately after it ended.
standard 60's white-guy rock not terrible, but not good either
An album by the two to three only americans who didn't get drafted by the army. And it sounds like it.
Three Bob Dylan’s. Not as great as it sounds.
This wasn’t… awful.
Not bad just not my vibe
Crazy how boring psychedelic rock can be.
This album is super lame. But maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it today. The whole San Francisco folk/country/rock genre is not one that I've ever liked and this as an early example didn't exactly sway me the other way. If you were born in like 1950 you probably love this and would think 'yeah this is real music' while mixing your Metamucil in the morning. But it's weak, it's sappy, it's super dated. Not for me. Plus one star for a pretty cool album cover I guess. 2/5
great production, no tunes to speak of
alt und country-angehaucht, naja
Very basic, thankfully it was less than 30 minutes long.
Very nothingy, struggling to even remember listening to this.
First listen. Meh.
Beatles wannabe
Happy Hippy music from a strange land. Sounds like so many others, none of them particularly good. Hey, young folks we’re all getting high, ditching their clothes and skipping the shower. Free love baby! Dudes had it made, getting laid without trying. This music reflects that mood. Dumb, bland and easy. Poor misguided lassies.
Pretty standard sounding '60s psychedelic pop. Nothing earth-shattering here.
-didn’t really like it much at first but some songs sort of grew on me? Nine Pound Hammer specifically is really good but the rest isn’t quite as appealing to me. would give 2.5 if I could -Favorites are Nine Pound Hammer and Old Kentucky Home
bob dylan lite
Didn’t like his voice
I liked the Old Kentucky Home version at the end.
It’s interesting, for 60s folk. But I dislike Dylan’s voice so much that I’m triggered by those who ape his irritating affectations.
I wanted to like it more. Bob Dylan they ain't. Harmless listen, chill vibe.
It could have just been the picture on Spotify (the group picture gave me mad barbershop quartet vibes) but this one was really odd to me. I got the hippie, San Fran vibes, but it just didn't feel authentic. Something about the guys voice and lyrics made me feel like he was a bit of a poser. It wasn't bad, just odd
no thanks. not for me.
Fairly charming. Nothing I'd seek out again, but it was fine
a bit boring to me
After listening to this album through, Google took me on a trip into the Beatles, Nick Drake, The Who, and Jefferson Airplane. It struck me how my reaction to the music changed when that happened. Granted, this album's folk-based, acoustic guitar-driven groovy vibe definitely had the sound of the times. But I see it more as a sound of summer album, that meant so much to maybe a group of hippies, listening to it on their travels in their VW van. I'm sure it meant so much to them in the context of what they were experiencing, and has a wonderful nostalgic quality for them now. But for me, their music doesn't have the same effect. The Beau Brummels simply weren't as inspired and talented and are easily lost in the shadow of their contemporaries who had such a profound influence on music. Bands like The Doors and The Mamas and the Papas will always be relevant, to me and generations to come. Although a good listen the first time, I don't think I will revisit this album.
The 1960s are overrated.
Jangly Dylanesque folk-pop, but not nearly as deep.
Fairly dated and fairly boring. 2/5
I don’t get it.
Listenable at least
No thanks. We’ve enough of this type of thing on here already.
Started off ok then I went to sleep
Most fantastical, “medieval” sounding baroque pop sounds very similar and this album is no different. Pretty uninteresting stuff, except for a couple highlights (most notably, the final track), so it makes sense why this isn’t particularly that remembered in the grand scheme of 60s music.
Funky lil folk album. Thought at first I was going to dread it, but not that bad.
The only thing I can associate with this album now is that the last song is the one that Roger Sterling sings while wearing blackface at his wedding. 2/5
Didn't get this at all.
Nope, not sure why it's here. An undiscovered Dylan style album all folksy and nice? Lyrics from the late 60's. OK. Nice. Still dont see why its been brought to this list. Why no Dylan album then? Do I even like Dylan? Will listen to it again and see ... Apparently not. 2 stars.
Meh. I don’t remember these guys. I enjoyed the first and last songs.
Smells like hippie
Hmm
not for me
This music has not aged well. Spinal Tap's "listen to the flower people" is better than anything on this album.
Now here's a genre that didn't age too well in my limited musical estimation. Psychedelic music with folk vocals. This album is in black and white despite to kaleidoscope cover.
Is this country ? Is this indie ? Its both. And its not my personal preference. Good music but nothing mindblowing. Its like music from a 18 century movie.
Nice hippy vibes.
Meh
This made me depressed idk
Booooring.
Not my thing.
Well, that was intense. It sounds like music you'd hear in an adventure movie soundtrack from the 60s. Very focused sound, tight lyrics, unwavering in delivery. I can only handle listening to a couple of songs before it feels overwhelming and repetitive. I'll give it three stars.
Best Song: Are You Happy. I almost thought it was going to turn to an interesting, melancholy direction. But alas, it did not. Worst Song: It Won't Get Better. He's just extolling the virtues of dating young women over a sparse drum beat. Might as well rename this trash song "The Ephebophilia Stomp". Overall: Annoying proto-rock that might have served as a stepping stone for the genre as a whole, but today offers nothing interesting enough to warrant going back to listen to.
Bofff
After a string of punk and fast and frantic music; this was quite a change of pace. It's for sure something my dad would put on. It has a warm quality to it. I like it.
A little bit psychedelic, a little bit folk, a little bit whimsical, a little bit mystical. Pleasant but forgettable. I’m curious to read more about it and learn why it’s on this list.
Nice sound on first listen. I have to say though that I'm really not a fan of the billy goat bolted-on vibrato that some singers do. It just sounds unnecessary and coming from a place of insecurity. I love the strings and overall arrangement on the second track. Very cool sound. I just wish there was more balance though, the strings and accordion in the right ear are so loud and the drums / castanets / electric guitar in the left ear are so quiet. This one really went by without me even noticing. I just listened and felt unmoved. I don't think I'd have it on a list of 1001 albums to hear in your lifetime. Very interesting album cover. It looks like water color paints on an outlined drawing. The washed-out effect is cool. Not sure if I love the colors though; to me watercolors naturally look washed out and these colors make it seem washed out and thin and uncertain.
The folkier songs are nice, the rest is okay
decent walking music but not good on its own
Like a drunk hippie sauntered into my living room and serenaded me. 2stars.
Probably very influential. Influential doesn't always mean interesting.
I’m so fucking sick of forgettable 60s psyche shit. The author of this list has shit taste
Well produced. Pretty boring.
Reminiscent of their contemporaries Traffic and Jefferson Airplane, but nothing really grabbed my attention, but that could be due to a lack of familiarity with this group.
Easy listening, but unimaginative and boils down to just standard 60's rock.
If every song were like "The Wolf Of Velvet Fortune", this would be a fantastic album. Unfortunately though, that was the only song I enjoyed. The rest was boring forgettable filler.
Not really my type but some nice sounds
Reading up on this band's history, I was expecting some kind of attempt at a statement defining, caught-them-by-the-collar approach to their vocation of choice. What I got was something that leaves little to no impact (a given considering the backstory) and mostly just goes through one ear and out the other. Not that it is all bad, there is perhaps two or three sticklers here but, overall not something worth revisiting. Favorites: Only Dreaming Now, Painter of Women, Nine Pound Hammer, Magic Hallow, The Wolf of Velvet Fortune.
Played this all the way through twice and don't remember a single note. It just didn't register at all. I have no idea what sort of music it is. Only became aware of the sound after the akbum ended and Spotify started selecting music for me.
Obra que marca un puente entre el Pop y la Psicodelia americana. Es un buen disco pero no se puede comparar con otras obras enormes editadas ese mismo año 1967: Sgt. Peppers y Magical Mistery Tour, Forever Changes y Da Capo, The Velvet Underground, Surrealistic Pillow, Are you Experienced y Axis:Bold as Love, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, The Doors, The Who Sell Out, Days of Future Passed, Disraelí Gears, Bee Gees´ First, Younger Than Yesterday, Evolution y Butterfly, I never loved a man the way i love you y Arrives, Something Else, Scott ... incluso Wild Honey o Happy Together. Se deja escuchar pero resulta poco estimulante en algunos temas
Well. That was aggressively mid. I see no reason why this should be on the list. There are many other albums on this list that basically do what this one does but with more cultural importance and quality. Even the vocals are a bit too reminiscent of Bob Dylan at times. Basically, imagine a Bob Dylan album but with worse writing and no real meaning behind it. That's what this album is. I felt nothing listening to it. The song "And I've Seen Her" aged like milk. The others are okay I guess. The second to last song, "The Wolf of Velvet Fortune" is probably the best one. The sound is fine. I'm not upset that I listened to this, but it really isn't anything special to me at all. I'm not upset that I listened to this, mainly because it's only 28 minutes. I am going to forget about this as soon as I finish this review, and I'm okay with that. Low 2/5.
You know, the Beau Brummels. They were frequent guests on the Colgate Comedy Hour with Roy Donk. They did panels with Paul Julian, the guy who did the voice of the Road Runner. "Beep-beep."
Beau Brummels? More like the Bargain Basement Bob Dylans.
Not bad. Little over the top for me and his voice kind of annoyed me.
This is like if bob dylan was mixed with willie Nelson and a little bit of of the byrds you would get this band. Not saying it’s not great but it just seems like a weird mix of styles that come together. I’m the 60s this was probably the more popular sound to go with. It feels like an inside llewyn Davis thing where the Brummell never got super famous while the other artists passed them by. Probably won’t revisit this one. 5.6/10
It was okay
This just dragged on and it was very unexciting. It wasn’t horrible and I guess it was a little peaceful but it just wasn’t something I would consider to be influential.
Like if Bob Dylan wrote Big Star songs but 10 years earlier...? Not sure how I feel about this one. Started off kind of interesting...no bad songs, some nice melodies, but after (just!) 28 minutes I don't remember a thing and it really got long in the tooth by the end - honestly surprised it was only 28 minutes, felt almost twice that. Not really a great sign. Feels not "bad" enough for a 2 but far too boring not to. 4/10 2 stars.
Not great. Lazy liped singer. Just ok songs
Are You Happy?
The last couple of songs were genuinely very good, but I’d kind of lost interest by that point - a psychedelic rock album with some country influence that didn’t stand out too much
Although a child of the 60’s cannot remember this lot or if I did had forgotten. Absolutely love 60’s music and the memories it brings back. This album is just average. There’s no doubt it was made then as it has all the hallmarks but nothing on it stands out.
What if the Kingston Trio had a cousin who told them about taking acid?
Typical 60s album, but nothing too remarkable
wanna hit myself with the nine pound hammer after listening to this.
comparing vocals to bob dylan is not a compliment
I wish I lived back in the 60s and could find instruments from the Middle Ages and get a record contract…
Like Dylan, only worse
Eh
I don't recall anything about this album.
S'alright. Nice bus ride music
Nothing extraordinary. The last song was the most entertaining.
This is the perfect example of easy listening.
Olipas ihanan lyhyt albumi.
Pyschcountry. Nah.
Proto-hippy grass
It's just fine. Nothing more. Nothing less.
If Bob Dylan ever went to a Ren Fair. I didn't come away with too much here, but this record is pretty fun and strange. It helps solidify just how much crazy shit was happening in the late 60s.
At times this sounds a little bit like the soundtrack to the Rankin/Bass animated Hobbit movie (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL545948224B999E8A&si=PC6Lk90OH7Wwg8JP) which isn't a bad thing, but also is not necessarily a great thing either. This struck me as very 1960's San Francisco. While I think it is an interesting artifact of its time, I would not consider it an album everyone needs to hear.
SoCal on the cusp of psychedelia. I remember "Laugh, Laugh" but nothing after. They were one of dozens of Sgt Pepper dress-up clones, easily eclipsed by the Byrds and Jefferson Airplane. Not hard to listen to (in my nostalgic ears) but absolutely not noteworthy. Footnote-worthy? I dunno.....
Dylan-esque folky melodies and harmonies.
An album of its time, I think. Quite enjoyable and a band I hadn’t heard of.
Another dive into psychedelic folk—this time with Triangle by The Beau Brummels, an album I hadn’t heard of before. While it had some lovely moments, with thoughtful lyrics and charming arrangements scattered throughout, it didn’t quite land for me overall. A few tracks stood out, but as a whole, it’s just not my style.
The phrasing got on my nerves. Typical folkie stuff of the era.
What a crazy annoying voice - I promise you there is nothing special about it, nevermind it being it among the 1001 best albums ever. 4/10.
Sends you back in time, half in a good Hippie way, half too theatrical. Most Songs are too short to feel them, lyrics and voice are ok, but the Instruments are awesome.
I had never heard of these guys. I enjoyed a few of their songs, but I found myself looking forward to someone plugging in a guitar and breaking a string.
I don’t hate it surprisingly. Some scotch, corduroy pants, a fire with my dog, then it might work. Cool name history - English dandy guy.
Hmm.. ok, but not exceptional
Meh
This has the Beatles-esque era sound to it. Pretty solid album for the the sound at the time. Probably wouldn’t listen to this again though. 2.12
Would be a decent album in a vacuum but repetitive and near the bottom of what 1967 would have to offer
Interesting listen, but not my thing. The baroque style of music I found different, but not in a way that I enjoyed. Very medieval vibes with uninteresting rhythms. Storytelling in the lyrics was good though. 2/5.
This dude sounds like Bob Dylan. Not a great thing. Nothing really stuck out to me but also found myself wishing it would end sooner than later. And it’s only 29 minutes! Snooze.
Absolutely generic 60’s folk rock. Entirely forgettable.
Verkar ha halkat in på listan på ett bananskal. Aldrig hört talas om tidigare. Det mesta låter likadant.
Sitting here scratching my head and trying to remember a single melody from this morning’s listen. Just standard Beatles-lite fare (if a bit more saccharine) that drifted through one ear and out the other.
These guys were definitely on drugs. This wasn’t my thing, kinda folky/country/psychedelic, although I was disliked it less on second playthrough. I still don’t like it. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Keeper of Time Rating: 2
2/5 a bit boring ain't it?
Not really my bag but it’s fine
Pretty standard fare
Very nice folk rock.
This really didn't do anything for me. It was general run-of-the-mill psychedelic stuff from the time with a flair of country. Additionally, the singer often sounded like Bob Dylan (which if you're familiar with my reviews, is not something I consider to be a good thing). In any case, I really don't know what to say about this. It wasn't horrible, but I didn't really get anything from it.
I would give it 2.5, solid Rush-like instrumentals, just didn’t vibe with the singer’s voice.
Forgettable
Listened to this while tired and yelling at cars in traffic and I gotta say, it pissed me off, but points for only being 28 minutes
60s to the max. Wasn’t a huge fan of the vocals. No triangle was used, so that was disappointing
It's fine. I will admit I'm tired of being served 60s music, but this is far better than The Kinks album. I'd say this one is very much of its time, sort of a paint-by-numbers 60s pop album. But, along with the Donovan album, probably the best 60s album I've listened to. Yes, better than The Rolling Stones
A pleasant set of tunes that I didn't need to struggle through but don't necessarily need to hear again.
Rock demasiado viejo de los 60' que aburre.
Two tracks in: I’m not having a good time. We’ll see how long I last. Five tracks in: Meh. I think it’s the lead singer’s vocals that I’m not connecting with. Nine tracks in: How much more of this? Album ends: At least it was pretty short. Still meh for me.
very dull, nothing of note.60s psychedelic folk rock that leaves little to no impression.
First half was good, second half had some filler I could have done without
ahh 60s folk rock... suck it
I don't understand why everybody needs to hear this before they die. It's not terrible, but it's not good. Favorite song: Only dreaming now.
not so dandy
It's fine and unintrusive. I have no idea why this album is in this book, though it seems the result of fund memories being recalled while listening to this group and not necessarily based on the quality of music. It's a bunch of musicians who are competent with their instruments dropping acid and writing psychedelic rock. There were 800 bands doing this in 1967, so I can't imagine what makes this different from the others. I would not listen to this album again, not because it is bad, but because there are better examples of this genre.
A band I'd heard of but not anything by. First impression was thank god the tracks are only 2 mins long. But then the longer, later tracks were much better. The last 2 being the best.
Interesting psychedelic record by a band I've not listened to. A very 'west coast' sound which isn't a bad thing, but tinged with a bit of folk. Some reasonable moments such as Painters of Women, Triangle, Wolf of Velvet Fortune. Was expecting more, it might come with further listens if I can be bothered. Probably deserves more than a 2, but that's all it's getting at the moment!
I don't get it, man...
Meh.
Never heard of this album or band or artists before. Listening to it now, its not remarkable, its kind of forgettable. If someone told me that it was a practical joke and this was composed for a parody album about the 60s, I might believe it. 2/5
Meh
I swear pop music I. The 60s was as bad or worse than today. If you were Dylanesque or Lennon and McCartney-like, you got an album. Thank you black sabbath and led zeppelin and pink floyd
It had its moments
In spite of loving some of the orchestral arrangements, the horns and strings peppered throughout, and being pretty warm to this genre of psychedelic folk rock, I found very little to like in the songwriting. It's Dylan-adjacent but feels pretty watered-down. I thought I'd really like this! But there wasn't a lot there that didn't pass over my ear. 2/5
I am not enjoying this
Pretty awful - tedious monotonous voice. No saving graces that I can hear.
This didn’t grab me so I didn’t choose to listen again. Might be harsh, because my ears were intact after listening, but 2*
Didn't really listen as I'd have liked. But from what I heard it wasn't up too much.
Beau Brummell- Looks like Al Pacino in a flower Pleasant folky 60’s music Maybe better than some of the of the other 60’s psychedelic folk stuff we’ve listened to. Not quite as pretentious maybe? Some of the instrumental is cool. The dude sings like a goat. Lost interest after a while
Not for me. Actually a good sounding recording Magic hollow made me want to puke
mush.
Move along folks...nothing to see here. Never heard of them. More folk rock.... do we really need this? 2.5
Genres: Folk rock, country rock, psychedelic pop, psychedelic rock Formed: San Francisco, U.S. in 1964 Run time: 11 songs, 28 min, 54 sec The fourth studio album by the rock band. The album explores life, love and the passage of time. It suggests looking back at what has been, rather than looking forward at what might be, which seems a bit passive. Sure look back, but you’ve got to look forward to what you might achieve or you’ll never progress in life. And there seems to be no mention of appreciating what you currently have. The songs are quite low key and much of the singing is a little melancholic. It has a folk feel that reminds me of early Dylan. Spotify: Least popular song: over 34k Most popular song: almost 154k plays The songs are well written and meaningful, but none of it moves me or elicits any sort of extreme response. (I didn’t like or dislike it.) I guess if I had a love of folk I would probably find this to be a great album. Listen Again?: No My Rating: **
Are You Happy?, It Won’t Get Better 1.5/5
First Listen. Album #1016 for me. Never heard of the band or any of the songs before today. The album's single "Magic Hollow" did not chart. 2.5/5
The music is pretty good, but then the singer opens his mouth. Sounds too much like Bob Dylan.
Happy it was only 25 minutes
Seems like it wants to be something that it just can't reach
Very volatile
I thought that was pretty bad. Not horrible, but dull? The only song with a little life was Old Kentucky Home (written by Randy Newman). This album did not age well.
Emendou uma sequência pouco significativa para mim, apenas mais um disco de folk.
What's the point? This is lame and dated and best forgotten and one suspect the BBs themselves might agree.
Boooring
Don’t think I’d ever heard this before. Not sure it is a favourite though. The
‘Painter of Women’ was about the only song that grabbed my attention in any meaningful way. The rest of this album: Meh.
Doesn't really do anything for me. It's fine.
Not much to say about this one. Sounded similarly to The Beatles songs from this era (late sixties), with some interesting, psychedelic tracks, like "The Wolf of Velvet Fortune", but otherwise very average and forgettable. Fortunately it is a very short album, with length of under 30 minutes, the songs just pass by without much pain or trouble, bam bam and it's gone. I will forget about this record in less than couple of days.
Decent but unremarkable. 2/5
Not really my cup of tea
Mid, mid, mid. Cover would be sick for a grunge album though
Didn’t really stand out for me
Twee 60s folk rock. Nothing to hate, nothing to like, everything to 2/5.
Very short - less than half an hour - but still managed to be a bit boring. Sounds very generic, like a lot of other music that came out at that time, but nothing that particularly makes it stand out, and the guy's voice is quite interesting but strays into territory that it shouldn't (it really doesn't work when he holds a note for a long time, and he does that a lot). 2/5.
Pff...
Some of the music was pleasant but it just sounds like literally everything that came out at the time.
File under forgotten for a reason. There is a generic “‘60s pop-rock band” feel here – that makes it destined to be no better – and perhaps even slightly worse – than replacement level. And too many songs have too much going on – the horns and harpsichord are especially excessive. Also, dumb name. Not awful, just not very good or memorable or worth hearing before one dies. The previous covers record should've automatically disqualified them from this list.
I didn't care for this album
It was OK.
Country-rock un tanto suave. Un poco del estilo de la época. No me ha parecido muy interesante
Just not my thing I guess. Not really bad, just meh. Some wannabe Bob Dylan psych-folk. Again, not exactly bad, but there weren't any songs that actually grabbed me. 2.5 rounded down.
Ei mitenkään kauhean kiinnostava levy
Too country for me
A weird blend of country, folk, and psychedelia that failed to move me.
They seem like they’d be no fun at all
Hmm, pleasant enough psychedelic folk/country, kinda like Bob Dylan meets Lucy in the Sky for an unplugged session...not sure I'm ever in the mood for that. 2.5 stars
This album proves that the decision to stop touring on devote yourself to studio work did not produce only gems. The two covers (Merle Travis's Nine Pound Hammer and Randy Newman's Old Kentucky Home) stand out. the only other tolerably interesting song is The Wolf of Velvet Fortune, which has a pleasantly minor key psychedelic feel. Other than that, I find the songwriting bland, I don't like the singer's voice, and the arrangements and playing just don't have any edge. Blandly inoffensive, slightly psychedelic, slightly country-influenced (but only slightly, when compared to,l say, Sweethearts of the Rodeo). Forgettable.
Nicht meins. Zu lahm.
Just a bit boring
meh
It’s ok
No los conocía y haberlo hecho no cambió para nada mi día de ayer.
I love the calculated nature of it, naming themselves so that they’d be shelved next to The Beatles. The songs don’t land for me, and I find their voices grating.
Wasn’t feeling this one. Not into 60’s psychedelic and this didn’t change my mind.
