Reviews (page 6 of 7)
I think I knew I wasn’t going to like it. I kind of wanted to like it, but there was really no way that I was going to like it. I’m just not a fan of this sort of schlocky 80s pop. I will admit, karma chameleon kind of slaps, but this type of music just isn’t for me.
Found some of it sort of charming, but not a needle-mover for me overall.
Fun listen but I don’t think I’ll do it again
Can you get more 80's than this? Not my bag. Is it on the list because of Karma Chameleon? One song shouldn't be enough to include something that is mediocre.
Overall I didn't like it too well. Karma is great but the general style was just hitting for me
The opener is a classic but it gets way too 80s for me after that. Best song: Karma Chameleon
Les années 80 dans leur incarnation la plus pure.
A lot going on here.
karma chameleon is the worst ohrwurm you can have
Not for me
Nothing crazy aside the first track, mostly filler but still mad respect for what expecially thr frontman was doing in the 80s
Sometimes a song is catchy and you deep inside like it... Karma Chameleon is not one of them for me. catchy and annoying that i heard since i was a kid. Rest of the album is there. it's just there. very 80s
I like his tone. Very nice production too. Music wise not the best but it’s ok. I like it’s a miracle more than Karma Chameleon. I really liked his voice at first but then I realised he was a bit too soft sometimes.
Karma Chameleon really saves this album, but I just can’t get into new-wave. The one live track I listened to I think I enjoyed more than most of the album itself, because it didn’t sound so over produced and fake. It’s gonna be a no from me dawg
Again…’80’s pop is not my thing.
It is a fun album, but it has obviously not aged well. It is campy and over the top.
Gets old
First song is amazing, but it was a mistake to put it on the front. None of the other songs come close and it made me bored.
A few good ones, but very repetitive
Hey chatgpt generate me an 80’s album Edit Apr 15 2026: 3 --> 2
Only here because of one song and the song isn’t even that good anyway
1.6 1x just so 80s.. never thought i would be listening to this album and unfortunately it's pretty painful. stayed out of 1 star thanks to a few catchy tunes
This is not for me at all. The hit is whatever, it's a cultural touchpoint. This brand of 80s new wave is not for me.
Not really my thing and felt like a bit of a chore getting through the full album. Fave track: Miss Me Blind
Interesting, only knew the single. I think I prefer other new wave bands.
no em puc creure que CAMACAMACAMACAMACAMALEON VINGUI D'AQUI la resta descafeïnat, però CAMACAMACAMACAMACAMALEON
Just pretty bland 80s pop.
Sure, Karma Chameleon is a great and fun song... the rest is quintessential substantially boring 80s. Not my jam.
Step 1: pick name of song Step 2: repeat name of song 69 times Step 3: add discordent backing vocals Step 4: profit
The 80s concentrated- feels like being at my dentists office
Special but not in a good way
I knew this was gonna be a rough one when it started out with "Karma Chameleon". I hate that song. It's just the same refrain over and over again, and it gets stuck in my head and will not leave. There's no way the rest of the album would follow in the same vein right? SHOCKER, it does. Boy George just repeats some 1-2 lines over and over for about 3 minutes with the same musical refrain playing in the background. Rinse and repeat for an entire album. 80's pop sucks. Also the album cover is just terrible. Like what are the three dudes doing on the left? They just look like three guys from the gym, are they even a part of the band? Also Boy George's face kinda creeps me out.
if they had not had lots of play on MTV & Boy George's flamboyant style, would anyone have even heard of them?? what else do they have apart from that??? and what is the obsession on this list with boring, mid, brit bubblegum pop????
No thank you. Too happy or something
Karma Chameleon is a good song. The rest, except for one or two others, I didn’t like. Probably a matter of personal taste, but this gets a 2 from me. I also question its inclusion on this lis for one song.
Never realized how much Culture Club and Wham sound alike. 2 stars for Boy George's bravery (to a lesser degree the rest of the band to for teaming up with him). But these are generic 80s synth pop songs
Highly orchestrated, sweet adolescent dance rhythms. Pablum for the most part.
I feel this could have been trimmed to an EP, or better yet a two sided single. Miss me Blind or Church of the Poison Mind for a B Side. The rest feels pretty bland, missing the mark on nods to Gospel and Reggae on several tracks. Also how the F did Black Money make it to whopping 5:19. Geez. I 'm sure this hit different in 83'.
Great cover art, one hit. I heard a million times on VH1 but the rest isn't for me
5/10 Highlights: Karma Chameleon
New wave baby van George Michael. 5/10
Got annoying very quickly
2.1 The dark side of the 80s. Everyone remembers it through rose tinted glasses but every now and then you get reminded there was a lot of shite. This is one of those instances. Just really naff pop, there's nothing redeeming about this. The one hit wonder is arguably the most annoying song on there. Sums it up.
Karma Chameleon is cool and all but the whole album? 1001 songs to hear before you die maybe, but the entire record? I find this pretty lame.
Didn't do much for me.
This is New Wave Pop with a soulful touch. Sadly, then, that at the same time it is so soulless. In other words: there is Karma Chameleon, and then there is all the rest, and all the rest cannot hold a candle to KC. There simply are not enough good songs here. 2/5
Kind of annoying
Not for me
80s dance pop with static production tracks in background. A fun few songs that hit it big back then, but don’t translate well today.
I did not enjoy this one. For some reason the version of Karma Chameleon that lives in my head is much more upbeat and energetic than the real version. Which made me think I had been listening to a cover instead of the original, but that does not seem to be the case. The rest is so very 80's, not in a good way. No desire to listen to this again.
typical stuff i think of when i think 80s 2/5 just not my thing
I like Culture Club okay but this is pretty lame. They clearly knew they had one hit and passed the rest of this.
Karma Chameleon: The Album feat. A Bunch of Worse Songs
Karma Chameleon - excellent. Rest of the album, so incredibly dated...
Nostalgic but dated. Nothing to make it memorable long-term.
androgynous synthpop an improvement for the gay rights advocates and stuff but i just don't get it (although i am one gay rights advocate myself) 2/5
This album was really boring and repetitive. Either then Karma Chameleon none of the tracks on here hit the spot. Not something I would listen to again
Colour by Numbers- Culture Club || 2.7/5⭐️ >very cute so far!! i like how “dreamy” their sound is. this whole album is just so 80s. >I LIKE IT. idc if they’re a one hit wonder this album is very consistent although a bit same-y. it’s going for something simple and it executes that very well. the melody is nice and i love the sound of that 80s mic quality. also i accidentally had ts on shuffle for two songs so ignore the whack sorting of my stand out songs bc idc enough to fix it. > giving it a three, overall it’s not bad or anything but compared to other albums this can’t compare. also some songs like ‘changing every day’ had such a strong start to disappoint me mid way through with the lacklustre vocals and harmonies. LIKE IT STARTED OF SO GOOD I WAS LIKE “purr ts is fs second🥈” just to hear that mid ass chorus. and it’s not just that song, it’s throughout the album. lwk hard to rank bc they all feel on the same level🥲 _______________________ stand out songs: karma chameleon🥈, it’s a miracle, mister man, victims🥇, church of the poison mind, miss me blind🥉, storm keeper
I do like some of the musicality of this. The harmonica adds depth. But in the end, dance beats.
Not sure the rest of this album holds up; beyond KC it's an 80s cheesefest. 2* Highlights: karma chameleon (I didn't remember this song having harmonica)
Why the repetition? You could pick any song, listen to the first 10 seconds, then set that song on repeat for 3-5 minutes, and you've got this album. I counted "black money" repeated 34 times in a 5 minute song. For a ratio of 1 black money every 9.3 seconds. Extrapolate that across the whole album, cause every song seems to end with just the repetition of a short phrase. My favourite part of Boy George is Alexis Arquette in The Wedding Singer.
First song = BANGER Rest of album, not really that good. It's got some high-highs, but also low-lows.
Once again, I came into the album, not knowing what it is or even what band this is. I was pleasantly suprised with a banger to start off with, but nothing else really gripped me after Karma Chameleon. Maybe that's why it's an unknown band (to me) - one hit wonder?
Karma chameleon adds a star. The rest is trash.
I don’t like it boss
This is better than a lot of the new wave in this list. Karma Chameleon is a classic.
Glad I wasn’t alive in the 80s when this was the peak of the culture!
It’s an 80s album for sure
I hate that stupid fking chameleon
For music that theoretically is supposed to make you move, most of these songs are very static. Boy George Is mostly locked into soulful white boy vocal mode, with minimal dynamics. I know the Culture Club radio hits, and based on those I expected better from this album.
Blast from the past.
I'm often a fan of synth heavy stuff that has a clearly 80s sound. This feels very dated and left behind though, rather than the likes of Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Tears for Fears that are charming and people still talk about I've never liked Karma Chameleon, always felt like a hokey novelty song. Thought the album was going to pick up with It's a Miracle which has a nice hooky chorus but Black Money pulls it back down again, the vocal melody on the chorus is so annoying for some reason. I think that's a bit of a recurring issue throughout the album, Boy George sings with kind of weird and annoying inflections that, coupled with the very repetitive lyrics, result in annoying and tedious songs Church of the Poison Mind offered something a bit different though, I liked that one 2.5 Highlights: Church of the Poison Mind
High expectations, did not deliver. Except for some singles and an ocasional track, this album is mainly ballads and midtempo. Gets tedious pretty quick.
Wait a minute. This isn't as good as people used to think it was.
Almost turned it off at the second donkeyfuck harmonica solo, but I persevered. Sadly Karma Chameleon, one of my most hated 80s songs, is the best one here.
Not country but somehow country.
Colour By Numbers is... not a bad album, but it doesn't feel like majority of it is too strong. Some songs were catchy, but I couldn't remember them next day. Strong 2, weak 3. I've enjoyed it a fair bit, but would rather to listen to something else
Just old pop. Like Prince, but worse.
A couple of good songs, and a lot of 80s dross.
One hit wonder
I generally enjoy this era of 80s pop and Karma Chameleon was rightly a big hit. But the rest of this album... meh
Worst Christmas present ever. If Boy George looked like a regular dude, or if MTV hadn't been invented yet, most of us would never have heard of Culture Club.
Starting with the classic Karma Chameleon kind of sets it up for failure. Nothing really compares after, though I do like Black Money.
New wave is not my jam in general, and Boy George is all the way at the Nope end of the spectrum. Clearly lots of talent behind this, but it's not for me. Still, I don't hate it, so sticking with my baseline of two stars.
Really trying to reserve this for when I really mean it, and I really mean it today: I did *not* need to hear this before I die. (No offense, Culture Club, xo)
Achei as músicas um pouco repetitivas. Mas Karma Chameleon e Miss Me Blind são um repetitivo legal.
I get the influence of Culture Club, but not sure I needed to listen to this whole thing before I die.
Great opening (probably their best song) but downhill rapidly
When I saw today's album, I briefly thought "Interesting. Maybe this will make a fan of Culture Club." By the third track, I'd given up hope for that. Absolute respect to Boy George as a person and trailblazer for acceptance of queer people in the world. And "Karma Chameleon" is still a fantastic song. But the rest just feels underwhelming and dated unfortunately. Fair enough that it was big in the 80s but 40 years later, it doesn't really hold up.
it's just cheesy 80s, not as bad as I expected it to be 2.5 stars
Karma Chameleon is far and away the best song, and I don’t think I’ve ever intentionally set out to listen to it. The Poptimistic part of myself kept trying to intervene, tell me that although Colour By Numbers is a pretty bog standard example of 80’s New Romantic Pop, it’s noteworthy because that was an important part of 80’s music. But a larger part of myself was complaining the whole time that this is just bog standard 80’s Pop, and outside of the big single, hasn’t been well remembered. It’s also not particularly well written lyrically, and Boy George as pleasant as his voice is is almost always overshadowed by his backing singers. I could happily have left this one
take all the originality and greatness of the cure and george michael, throw it away and mix whatever is left behind and you get this banal ass album…
You have maybe 2 good songs doing all the heavy lifting and hoping it’s enough to call this a good album, it’s not
SOOOO long
An interesting pop 80s album that feels like looking in a time capsule. It's actually neat to hear their take on culture and society and how they thought it would look in the future. Otherwise, the band itself was unremarkable. Boy George is fine but his backup singer was better. 2.5 brought down to a 2 cause I'll never listen to this again.
Boring eighties stuff. The title couldnt be more correct.

When I was four years old, Boy George was my first crush. Now that I've grown up to be a lesbian, it all makes sense.
Sure, Karma Chameleon is catchy, but there's a reason it's been played around 38 times more often than the next most listened to track. Mostly pretty bland pop, far from essential listening.
Starts out bleh and only gets worse
Not really for me but some of the songs do stick in my head. Will I listen to again: 10%
It's a miracle.... that this album is featured on a list like this. It's a miracle... that I endured listening to this entire album. It's a miracle. 1.5
I really wanted to like this bc the other reviews are so annoying "why is this a must-listen?" "this is just AI-generated 80s pop" like um it is quadruple plat in the US?? OF COURSE this feels like 80s pop BC IT WAS POPULAR IN THE 80S AND A HUGE HIT. Anyway I still didn't like it lol
Great start to the album, but unfortunately it fell off as it went along. Still a fun album in parts, but too much filler.
boring beyond belief. almost made me sad that I didn't forget my headphones
..
Produktionsmässigt den svagaste plattan jag fått rekommenderad tills nu. Riktigt tunt ljud. Låtarna är inte toppen heller. Finns några guldkorn, men också väldigt mycket utfyllnad.
Boring stereotypical 80s pop
1. kameleon - 3 2. miracle - 1.5 3. money - 1 4. day - 1 5. uuay - 1 6. poizon - 0 7. blind - 1.5 8. mizter - 1 9. ztorm - 1.5 10. victimz - 1.5 11. zhake - 0 12. myztery - 1 13. pot - 1 14. numberz - 1.5 15. romance - 1.5
Unfortunately didn’t really dig this other than the hits!
It’s just not a good album
2/5 depressed today
Karma Chameleon is a legit hit! The rest of this record was borderline off-putting for me.
Basic 80s new wave with a hit song in the form of Karma Chameleon.
Meh. I'm not a huge fan of Culture Club. I think it missed me when I was younger. My sister listened to metal, and my brother was into hip hop. When my mom jazzersised, it was to Wham, which is very similar to this I suppose, but a little more fun. I'll take George Michael over Boy George, both in music and if I were attracted to men. George Michael is superior. There is a slight nostalgia to some of the songs on here, so for that I will give it a 2.
This one was ok for me. George O Dowd has a good voice and sings soulfully. The music backing him though, particularly the drum tracks sound kind of low.quality. Or maybe it's just the way the album was mixed? George does some decent singing on this album but I am not sure it should be on this list.
This was pretty bland for me. Karma Chameleon is a banger but the rest just felt like forgettable 80s drivel to me
In a nutshell: a lot of style, little substance. Many of us know Karma Chameleon. Most UK listeners would recognise the singles or the whole album. It is crooning soul meets light new wave pop. Helen Terry's backing vocals were great. Music by Culture Club, Soft Cell and Frankie Goes To Hollywood represented a cultural retaliation. The UK was a mostly despondent nation under a Tory (conservative) government and emerging from a recession in 1983. It's not my thing. Overall: 3/10
Colour by Numbers is the second album by Culture Club, originally released in 1983. This is some pretty straightforward 80s pop with some blue-eyed soul elements. Everyone has heard Karma Chameleon. White people go feral for that some for some reason. The rest of the tracks weren't bad, they were just bland. There's some cheesy synth stuff sprinkled in here and there which certainly doesn't help. The bass lines throughout these songs are pretty solid tho. Whoever the bass player is was getting funky at times.
Not totally insufferably 80’s but it is and is also too long. The first track is a classic
Karma Chameleon is so far above every other song on this album, but the rest is okay. Can't really say its a good album overall.
keep going, I'm sure the next forgettable new wave album is the one that I'll finally love (at least karma chameleon is good)
Not really into it. Not terrible tho, just won't remember or listen again.
Karma Chameleon is a catchy song, the rest is weirdly annoying, because the repetitive lyrics and Boy George doesn’t modulate his voice.
Karma chameleon lol
This album was a total snooze fest. There was absolutely nothing for me to latch onto, and it barely served any purpose beyond being background noise.
This is a rather subjective review since I was never in 80s pop and this album just confirms my bias. There is some good production work here and some catchy hooks and beats. Still, I have no desire to ever give this a re-listen.
Karma Chameleon was a favourite of mine when I was younger so I was willing this to be good, but the rest of the album is a bit 'generic 80s pop' for me. It picked up in the second half with songs like Stormkeeper bringing the summery vibes, but nothing really elicited a reaction beyond the odd involuntary foot tap or head nod. 2.5
After the opening couple I thought this wouldn’t be as touch a listen as I’d expected. But then Black Money decided to spoil the fun, and with honorable exceptions in Miss Me Blind and Stormkeeper, it stayed that way. Not too much to fuzz about
The rating isn't really a knock on this album. It's all serviceable and occasionally fun. I just think there might be better albums out there to represent this era and genre. I appreciate the nods in several songs toward diversity and inclusion, even if they come off as corny by today's standards.
This album is pretty ass.
eh
I am surprisingly fond of the music from the 80s, but this album embodies everything that was wrong about it. It's full of clichés, repetitive melodies, poor songwriting, with an absolutely horrid back-up singer. Of course I recognise and quite like 'Karma Chameleon' because it's catchy as hell, but the rest of this album is 90% garbage and maybe one or two passable songs. 2 stars
Better than I expected but my expectations were lower than a chameleons toe. One overplayed single and an average show. Someone with just a little talent should really do the right thing and go.
Not really my thing, too upbeat and joyous. Listened to: at home. Favorite tracks: Miss Me Blind, Victims
If you like the whole 80s vibe, you’ll love this, but there’s really nothing of substance here.
That cover screams 80s. A very strong album of an album of its time. There's some good synthy type work and his voice works with it. Not a masterpiece but it makes sense to have things like this on the list showing where music goes. It's fine. Karma Chameleon shines so much brighter due to the harmonica.
I'm not sold on this needing to be on the list. The music sounds like poor generic karaoke tracks. The harmonica sounds so out of place. There's one catchy tune and a couple alright ones.
Again, good, but not my thing really
There’s not a lot too this but George has a fine voice and was obviously a trailblazer in many ways
Apart from Karma Chameleon it's poor, it's not actually as bad as a lot of 80s stuff but that's because it doesn't try to be anything, it flirts with styles without being any of them, and tries to lean on Boy George's voice as a strength. That's fine, but his voice and style is shown up for being inferior to George Michael some years later, not their fault, but with 40 years of hindsight this isn't list-worthy. 2.
An album that was very much of its time, and the kind of music that induces a smile for a track or two but quickly loses its gloss. I definitely didn't need a whole album of this, and starting with the only really memorable song meant that there wasn't even any anticipation that things might get much better. It's a high 2, but a 2.
Karma Chameleon ist bekannt
Between a 2 and a 3. nothing really objectionable. I just got bored with it.
Just the one. Rest are trash
Only about two songs worth relistening to on the album, seems like the other ones are just trying to repeat something to the point that is gets catchy. 4/10
I can see how this would have been an important album culturally, but it's not for me. Karma Chameleon is a banger, though
very much looking forward to never listening to this album ever again as long as i live 👍
The album starts off with a bang with Karma Chameleon, and it never gets back to that level of quality. In fact, a handful of the songs are just really bad. It's never consistently bad, but the album on a whole is not worth listening to.
Peak 80's pop. Karma Chameleon es, con toda justicia, uno de los éxitos de la década. La inclusión del disco completo sólo por ese argumento es más debatible.
I'm sorry but this album doesn't deserve to be on this list. It's just not a good album as a whole. One massive hit song and a boat load of filler. I know Boy George was quite a prominent figure in his time so I suppose they felt they had to represent him somehow but musically this is just so bland. There are 2 reasons this gets a 2/5 instead of a 1/5: firstly, Karma Chameleon is a decent enough song with a catchy chorus. Secondly, I had "L'eau Rouge" by the Young Gods yesterday and this felt like a palette cleanser in comparison to that.
Meh
Not much stands out in this aside from Karma Chameleon.
One ok song and mediocre filler.
Better than I remember it 30 years ago, but still 2-3 strong tracks with generic filler.
80's cheese.
I give it a second star because of gender-bending Boy George infuriating bigots. Apart from that, it's pretty dull '80s pop.
It was interesting to listen to this at a distance but it hasn't aged well and is pretty boring overall. Fave: Stormkeeper
This is not for me, I'm afraid. "Karma Chameleon" was played to death, of course, but has slightly redeemed itself in my eyes as a fun karaoke number, but the rest of the album was quite hard work to get through. Fave track - uh, "Mystery Boy (Suntory Hot Whiskey Song)" had some novelty value, I guess!
Shout out to the office. Karma karma karma karma chameleon! Random fucking album lol. 80s beats with some 80s intensity coming out of this album. 2.5 stars for me
hahaha what an all time song to be the intro to this album. This certainly has the cheese. Kinda odd that it went from bubbly dancey pop music to a slower ballad of Victims. I was enjoying the first couple songs of this album for what they were, but it feels a bit long as it falls off through the middle of the album. Melting Pot brought it back to what I was expecting the whole album to me. I think I might be irrationally harsh here with how much I disliked the structure of this album. Liked the pop and cheese. Disliked the ballads. Hated that they were all mashed into one incoherent album.
Oh man immediately expecting some 80's bullshit from the cover. I feel like I shouldn't like Karma Chameleon but I do. Just a fun song that probably helps that I'm familiar with it. Second song is alright as well, is my view on 80's sounding pop music actually changing?? The love for this was short lived with those two. Black Money sucks ass. Changing Every Day sucks ass. I refuse to listen to the bonus tracks on this. Hell yeah it's over. 2.
Didn’t enjoy very much
As a child of the 90s, when I think "80s music" the thing that always pops into my head is androgynous, brightly-clad singers in retro-futuristic clothing spouting nonsensical lyrics while backed by synthesizers. While this project has shown me plenty of great 80s counter-examples, this album is maybe the embodiment of that mental image. Some catchy songs, though.
Boy George‘s heavenly soulful voice cannot hide the mediocre songs.
Karma chameleon is a jam, otherwise this is music that I would never want to listen to on a regular basis.
wanted to like it but unfortunately lame and one-note
Doesnt really hold up
More 80s pop that's one or two hits followed by 10 more songs that feel like the musical equivalent of T-posing. I don't even like Karma Chameleon, so this was dead on arrival for me.
I hate painting but never tried paint by numbers
Opening a song with “clowns caress you:” -bold -not helpful at all, contrary to the title
What did they put in the water during 1980-1989 that made everyone write bad music?
kama kama kama kama kamalionnnnnnnnn
In the 80s, it was a sometimes good and danceable pop production. In my opinion, the album never had any other aspirations. After 40 years, however, the varnish is clearly off, for me personally it's clearly too soft, the songs seem boring without substance.
"Karma Chameleon" is an all-time pop song. Tracks 2-10 are not. There was a point on "That's the Way (I'm Only Trying to Help You)" I thought to myself, "Who's that singing backup, more of her please!" Then I got my wish on "Church of the Poison Mind" and wished I hadn't. There's good musicianship here, Boy George has a nice voice, and there's a surprising amount of harmonica on "Colour By Numbers," but every song beyond the first is so forgettable I don't understand why this made the list.
About as non-cocaine 80s music as it gets, which still happened to be a lot of cocaine. I try and put myself into the shoes of a 20 something with each of these albums and though I enjoyed the melody’s and the heavy use of the sax on this one, I think I would have avoided the culture club fandom much like I’ve avoided mainstream pop for my entire life
Some half decent tracks, would I listen to the album again? No.
It all feels a bit dated and samey. Didn’t really make an impact
When it comes to Culture Club, I've only ever heard the song "Karma Chameleon" before listening to this album. It's a pretty smooth new romantic track that I always found mildly catchy and is easily the best song here. Not sure why, but the harmonica always seemed out of place and sort of soured the mix. But I do like the chorus and the harmonies; they're very light and cleanly performed. Digging into it lyrically, the sentiment here stands out. Boy uses the imagery of a chameleon to describe the desire to blend in and conform to avoid alienation and scrutiny. Clean and light are probably the two best adjectives I can use to describe this album's overall aesthetic. Boy George is a solid vocalist, taking influences from RnB vocalists which I find somewhat unique for this genre of music and adds some enjoyability and life to many of the performances. The vocals are the highlight here and generally carry (like on the song Black Money). I'll also acknowledge his good writing here, like on the closer "Victims" a song whose meaning is difficult to pin down, but the imagery is evocative and almost tragic. The instrumentation is dull and dry to me for the most part. The harmonica and saxophone that occasionally crop up act as blemishes rather than enhancements and only serve to age this album. There are some cool moments, like the guitar solo on "Miss Me Blind", a song where I think the instrumentation's smooth, minimal, and reserved yet well-composed nature works in the track's favor. Ultimately though, my issues with this record boil down to just lackluster songs that are neither memorable nor interesting. It seems to be a recurring issue for me with New Romantic.
Love this album cover except for the first distorted C in Culture Club — red, green and gold are all represented and tie into the lyrics from their hit Karma Chameleon all while proudly announcing the band's style. I don't find the music particularly interesting or exciting but Boy George is as listenable as ever. A solid, heartfelt 2 stars wishing there was enough substance to the album to accompany all this style to give it 3 or more.
The only thing keeping this from being 1/5 is the incredible backup singer belting out those notes. Otherwise, this ain't for me.
ekki beinlínis fyrir mig. þokkalegasta sterílt popp. 2,5
Was very surprised and happy to hear the first song! I’ve never heard any of their songs and honestly don’t know if I missed out at all. Really was a great stoop down after the first song. Wasn’t horrible, but not what I thought it’d be.
80s week continues ... this is one I most definitely did not like this as a kid and even though so much of what I thought was "uncool" I either legitimately enjoy now or have a fond nostalgia for ... this isn't fitting under either. Just too smooth/polished/nice. Easy to understand how it was so popular - even the album colours are so of-the-time - and I don't have a thing against pop but man I really really don't like this and in a similar vein to George Michael - recognizing that he and Boy George are at the same time good singers that just turn me right off. The music is almost like cookie-cutter / Sesame Street ideas of what pop-meets-fake-soul should be. Moving on. 4/10 2 stars
Seems good? Just don't really like this genre.
What a disappointment this is. Karma Chameleon is a fun song. The other songs are weak and the performance is mediocre and missing any drive.
Was worried this would be a one track album and boy were my concerns validated. I’m it’s better moments it’s a little Prince adjacent (I liked miss me blind) but overall it’s just shitty, sappy, surprisingly political pop.
Nothing super offensive here but nothing really stands out either. Just another very 80s album
I knew Culture Club’s big hits like Karma Chameleon from growing up in the 80s. That one is still a bop. Miss Me Blind is also catchy. Mister Man was one of the better songs on the album. Overall this is not a good album and I did not enjoy it. Even the hits are catchy, but not “good.” They are very generic 80s, with shallow lyrics. It was painful to listen to this. I’ll give it a 2, rounding up.
Started with a banger then fizzled immediately. Some good jams here and there that have a very city pop like sound, but just wasn’t quite there.
I have a love/hate relationship with 80s pop - used to hate it, now (sometimes) love it. Maybe that’s a natural reaction from being one generation removed from the 80s; this is Mom’s music. Listening as a kid I thought it was appalling. I see some musical and nostalgic value in 80s pop now, with there being some real gems (looking at Yes, MJ, Phil Collins, Billy Joel). That being said, this was an unremarkable album. Seemed to be never-ending with too many songs; lots of them sounding totally the same. A struggle to make it through all of them, in fact I only made it 2/3 the way through and just can’t get myself to listen to another 20 min. Not offensive, but not even entertaining either. Two stars here.
Not too much to go off here. It is a very basic 80's pop album. It it likely only here for the big karma chameleon hit. Overall it was just okay. Not bad but not good. 2.5 stars
One hit, boring album
Found the sound annoying.
A poor man's Wham!
On 5 December 2008, Boy George was convicted in Snaresbrook Crown Court, London, of the April 2007 assault and false imprisonment of Audun Carlsen, a Norwegian model and male escort, who initially stood for a photography session with Boy George. Carlsen claimed that he had been handcuffed to a wall fixture and beaten with a metal chain during their next meeting
He definitely had a cultural significance. So I see the reason for it being on the list. from a music stand point ... super 80's!! maybe too much for me today.
Besides the two hits on this album, the other songs... feel like b-sides. They don't pop a much as "Church of the Poison Mind" and "Karma Chameleon". And I'll say it: "Church of the Poison Mind" is the better song. "KC" is overly repetitive, and feels like it's a good 30 seconds too long. The backup singer sounds more talented than Boy George, overpowers him in a couple of songs. THAT'S never good. And the drums have that manufactured 80s sound (I mean, yeah, it was the 80s, but still....). So it did not wow me to hear the other songs on this album. Not at all. Next.
moises appendix go wah wah
This was agony
Red, Gold & Green! One of my favorite childhood lyrics... plus perfect for CHRISTMAS! But the album.. wasn't that good
Disappointing, especially considering that Karma Chameleon is on this album. All the songs sounded very similar and not good. DNF.
not my favourite
This album came out of the gate with the only song worth listening to as its first track. After Karma Chameleon I would suggest just moving on cause everything else is just 80's pop garbage. I can't in good conscience give this album a 1 start and lump it in with the other truly terrible 1 star albums so for Karma Chameleon alone this gets 2 stars.
Better than I expected. Nice voices but just not a pop fan I guess. 2/5
So sappy, so cheesy, so SO long. One hit does not make a great FIFTEEN song album. 2/5
Hated Boy George. But as a child of the 80's I grew up with this stuff and other UK new wave bands so a pleasant walk down memory lane.
I don't think anything comes close to Karma Chameleon but still a pleasant listen.
Le groupe à Boy George. C'est doux, ça fait très années 1980 rêveur. Du Michael Jackson soft
Karma Chameleon can't save this. Black Money and That's The Way kill any momentum side one had. Side two picks up with Miss Me Blind and Mister Man. It's ** overall but I would just listen to the second half.
Karma Chameleon and not a lot else
I always thought Church Of The Poison Mind was the best thing Culture Club ever did, by about 10 lengths. That single spent a lot of time on my jukebox. On the other hand, I couldn’t really stand Karma Chameleon - the fact that it was constantly being played probably didn’t help. But apart from those 2 songs & It’s A Miracle, an ordinary single, I had no recollection of anything else on this album. I always thought George had a great voice, but I find a lot of these tunes less than inspiring. Great to be reminded what a great voice backup vocalist Helen Terry had.
I would have been 12 or 13 when this album came out, and Culture Club were the biggest thing on the pop charts. And their cultural presence was even greater; I distinctly remember the 60 Minutes (Australia) interview with Boy George, which was BIG NEWS at the time. Everyone was talking about it.; what was he on about? Why did he dress like that? Was he (gasp!) gay? Watching it again now (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfo25Mry-ak), George is charismatic and funny, but delicately treading around issues that were highly controversial at the time, and hopefully less shocking now. Even though he pointedly and repeatedly dodged the question of his sexuality, Boy George was clearly queer coded, and he is important for being one of the first unambiguously queer presenting pop stars. I sure Boy George's very existence (not to mention his successes) meant the world to a whole generation of queer youth. And good on him for that. But, a musical level, it didn't do much for me then (when I was pretty firmly in the age demographic for mainstream pop music), and still does not much for me now. George's voice is a pleasant enough pop voice, but the songs and production are just... you know... OK.
I’ve been telling myself I need to be harsher with my rating, and I think this’ll start that. This is a two for me. I just don’t click with it. Maybe 80s new wave isn’t my thing? Cause despite the impressive commercial and critical reception of this album, I just don’t care for it. I like the guitar solo in miss me blind. And I like a lot of the lyrics. But for listening to? I just don’t care for it at all
Pop album not my deal
Assumed I would hate this but honestly it's got some bops. It needs some editing though. Too many songs and too many long songs. Overall I will never go back to this.
At least 'colour' is spelt correctly. 2 stars for that.
Bleh
Not my cup of tea
It's not really fair for me to evaluated since I'm not much of a fan of this type of thing. The standout track for me was not even on the original release: the Live version of Melting Pot...
“Karma Chameleon” was the perfect amount of fun, 80s, pep and they got the formula just right on that song. Unfortunately after this, every song lacks some aspect in one way or another which leads to an incredibly boring, lackluster, and forgettable album. Uninspiring music from the eighties and nothing else. 2/5
The definition of a one hit wonder.
Wasn’t really my vibe either. Slow ballads were shit
Ihan vekkulia rallattelua myös Karma Chameleonin lisäksi. Mitenhän toimisi jos tässä hetkessä julkastais eikä olis mitään historiaa pohjalla?
Pirtee, mut tavallinen
Not exactly my style, but gotta give Culture Club their flowers—Karma Chameleon is an all-time department store song, even if it’s like 3 minutes too long. I won’t go so far as to say it’s a good song (or that the album is good either) but that kind of longevity and widespread appeal is hard to do.
Quite repetitive, lyrically not my favourite
This album was released when I was 12/13 years old, so still a huge time for radio but MTV was ascendent, and a huge time for me as an adolescent. When you are young there are so relatively few albums that you've listened to. So some of these songs are deep-carved into my brain. I did not have this album and I had visceral reactions to some songs at the time. This will be an interesting listen. Ok, so when I was a kid I remember waking up to Karma Chameleon on my clock radio and disliking it viscerally. I thought it was vacuous, redundant and irredeemable. I don’t think that I’ve changed much on that front. An ear worm for sure, but in this case that is a bad thing. I dislike the excursions into faux gospel, of which there are a lot of them. Perhaps in a bid to give them more authenticity, they often have an emoting Aretha Franklin-type singer going ham in the background. She sounds much like the Dark Side of the Moon background singer, but here it doesn’t work for me, as it somewhat does there, due to the fact that it’s put in a gospel-lite setting rather than a contrasting one, like histrionic psychedelic prog rock. Changing Every Day is where I found some relief, having a jazzier chord progression brought forward by a nice sounding bass line. It kind of gave me slight Police vibes, which might not be too far fetched given the time and place they both were operating. In fact, the bass is the best part of this album. There are also some passably tolerable 80s funk disco tracks. But they are kind of tepid in both categories. Lyrically, musically this whole thing is a trifle. I suspect that any transgression was in the presentation. Which is cool, but really wish there was some music to match. It has its fair share of Time Capsule 80s benneton ad social justice cheese like Melting Pot. My favorite track might just be the instrumental full-candelabra and strings cinematic affair closer, Romance Revisited.
Tbh it’s another list clogger for me. This couldn’t be a more generic 80s pop album if it tried. I’m sure someone loves this, probably a square who was in high school when it came out, but not me!
Couldn’t make it very far. Would make great hold music, which is better than elevator music, but by no means does someone have to listen to this before they die. #clogger
I’d consider myself a fan of 80s pop, but man this was a slog to get through. I wasn’t ever in to Culture Club and this has absolutely confirmed that for me. Karma Chameleon is obviously a banger, Miss Me Blind is a great track, and I can even get down to Church Of The Poison Mind if I needed to, but besides that everything was so generic and boring. Probably closer to 2.5 stars when I factor in Boy George being a beautiful androgynous gay icon, but I still round down to 2 stars for the overall quality of music.
No jaa, tosi kasari kevyiden juhlien albumi. Tyhjänpäiväistä. Rallattelua. Kuitenkin hyväntahtoista ja sydämellistä, joten ei voi vihata. Fade taas kaikkien biisien lopussa, eli ei osata lopettaa biisejä.
Onneksi tämän äänimaailma on kehittynyt suoraan soulista, eikä esim. jazzista. Harmittava puoli on se, että hittibiisi ei sytytä minua, ja ainoa joka herättää tunteita on Miss Me Blind.
A couple of fun songs but nothing beyond that for me
Boy George and, by extension, the rest of Culture Club were one-hit wonders. Anyone who has listened to Colour By Numbers will know exactly why. While Karma Chameleon was charming enough with it's dreamy lyrics and earworm chorus, rarely does Culture Club land that same plane twice. Of course, it's worth discussing the cultural phenomena of Boy George. While the New Romantic was playing with androgyny, Boy George seemingly embraced it. There's a lot of ambition in embracing a more feminine look than even David Bowie. There was even rumblings of homosexuality, though Boy George would pull the bisexual card for a while as a sort of rockstar "fuck anything that moves" play. Turns out he was just gay. There's not much else to say about Culture Club. Colour By Numbers was truly unremarkable.
woof. karma chameleon is a classic but the rest of this album is filler. terrible lyrics, boring music, strange but uninteresting instrumentation... just a big resounding meh across the board. come to think of it, karma chameleon isn't even that great of an 80s song either considering what it's up against... favorites: karma chameleon
Eh. Only "Karma Chameleon" is really worth listening to. 5/10
Does the thing where it opens with it's best number, only this one is more a flukey hit than a good piece of music.
One or two good songs here (Karma Chameleon being a classic), but most of it is just cheesy 80s new wave.
Was looking forward to a good fun record but besides Karma Chameleon, boringly thrown right at the beginning, an omen that the rest of the album is filler, it’s just an album full of filler. To Boy George’s credit, wittingly or not, he’s recorded an anti-money laundering anthem in Black Money.
Leuk die hitjes, maar was nooit helemaal mijn ding. Ook best wel gedateerd
Yeahhh this is precisely the kind of 80s pop I do not like at all. Goofy and cheesy and upbeat in a way I don't enjoy. There's one song I only really remember from childhood birthday parties and school discos... It's that one song that they'd always play without fail, despite the fact this was in the 00s, not the 80s. So it was Karma Chameleon, Cheeky Girls, Mambo No. 5, the Macarena, every single time. I don't know, maybe Karma Chameleon will be my favourite by way of nostalgia alone, in the sense of, I remember it, I don't have any particularly good or bad memories tied to it. Everything else just seemed quite filler-ish. Kinda cool how Boy George was confidentally embracing androgynous fashion all the way back in 1983 though, so that's a plus. Favourite: Karma Chameleon
2.5
Went downhill fast after Karma. Couldn't finish it
really??
Boooooring, few songs are ok. Nothing special.
Respect Boy George for being so unapologetically himself and giving representation to queer non-binary weirdos who defied societal norms by daring to be themselves at a time when the world wasn’t very kind about that. He does have a lovely voice too. Karma Chameleon is a song I’ve always enjoyed. But the rest of this album is underwhelming filler at best.
Karma chameleon that’s it. That’s the whole album. Everything else is lame 80s pop that sounds like it could’ve been played before an AIDS event. This is another album that goes into the list of questionable albums on this list. Not the worst album but one song doesn't make this album. 4.9/10
The 80's were weird times
I'll say something that might offend a lot of British people, but to me these guys are a bit of a one-hit wonder. Yeah, I know "Karma Chameleon," we all do. It's a fun, cheery pop song, but that charm doesn't exactly carry me for an album. Supposedly they have others hits (according to Wikipedia at least), but there's not much here that I'd return to. Their style of bright new-wave pop, whatever you want to call this, it just feels cheesy, to the point that I'm kind of put off from "Karma Chameleon" too. I'm probably being too cynical here, but these guys lack a discernable edge. I did really like "That's the Way," but that track feels and sounds like a departure. Can't say this is bad, but it's not moving the needle for me. Favorite tracks: That's the Way, Karma Chameleon. Album art: Really bright colors, and a fun, creative twist on a band photo, isolating the gang into what could be high school yearbook shots. I don't know anything about Boy George, but that's him on the right, right? Odd bloke, that one. Cool cover though. 2.5/5
Very basic
nah
Very much early 80s pop music. Like the soundtrack for a cheesy 80s movie which doesn’t seem to specific of a definition cause that could be any cheesy 80s pop but it’s just that you could swap it with any other and not notice
The album has 1.5 great pop tunes (Karma and Church of...) but is filled out with a lot of song that Wham! cold have covered a bit better. Never a fan of this style of 80's pop ballads but a nice album.
If I've ever heard Colour by Numbers before, I've forgotten. Culture Club was a definite force when they were played on the radio, and I have solid memories of three of the tracks, but the rest of the album left little impression. The album is too soft for me. New wave ballads mixed wiht music that would be appropriate in the elevator or the background noise at a mall. Not music to get upset over, but not music to be excited about. Although "Karma Chameleon" might come back for a re-play for nostalgia's sake, the rest of the album feels like an easy "no".
This is of poor, cheesy, schlock quality. Feels like a middle school production and he's not that great a singer.
Some of it is decent, but there is a lot of shit here, boys
Wanted to love it, but I'm pretty so so. There are catchy little parts, but a lot of it feels dated and stale.
Oh god no.
Some of these songs are borderline unlistenable (looking at you "Black Money"). I can appreciate this as a funny, silly thing that exists, but I don't respect it. Glad when it was over.
Another album that opens with a banger and then drops off quickly in quality. Definitely can't say it was all that great.
I added a star for karma chameleon.
A very, very mildly catchy, weak sauce semi-hit + half an hour of bland, nameless 80s pop. Not every band that had a hit in the UK needs to be included here, at least in my opinion. Shame the author didn't share it. Update: lucky I listened to the end, cause the last song was easily the best on the album. 2/5.
Meh! There are so many better albums from the 80s.
As an aside: this was America's first real glimpse of gender identity. There was quite a debate about what sex "Boy" was. This is pretty standard 80's fare. Boy has a great voice and the music, for the time, was pretty good. But I hate "Karma Chameleon" with a passion and the rest of the album is just meh.
Not a classic
Karma Chameleon is a fantastic song, and there were a couple of other fun songs on here (It’s a Miracle and Church of the Poison Mind were two other highlights) but otherwise it’s a pretty forgettable and unimpressive album
Iguana song
Dull, slightly cringey lyrics with an admittedly youthful lack of self-awareness, generally a bit warbly and unstructured. Karma Chameleon is obviously a classic but can't carry this amount of filler. Very 80s cheese throughout, a half hearted attempt to get some gospel in the background that didn't quite pay off. Not for me
Some good vocals but it's also typical fluff pop that's just a bit too staid for my taste
Jeez man that sucked
Very throwaway 80s, doesn't have any enduring appeal so not sure why it's on the list
Very eighties. Too radical for Stock, Aitken & Waterman, maybe, but not by much.
😬
Nah, not very good. Not actively painful, but pretty bad.
Before I rail into this album, I want to say that I always thought Boy George was pretty cool. When this band launched, I was a bit confused by the outsized shock people seemed to have about this man dressed as a woman — or androgynously, or whatever — he always seemed pretty genuine to me. I was way more shocked/confused the first time I saw a greasy long-haired metal-head wearing a Poison t-shirt. But I digress... So good on BG for bringing alternative sexuality and lifestyles to the fore. But to elevate this band, or this album, and suggest this was some sort of milestone in music? Really? It sounded dated the month after it left the charts. The deeper cuts are middling to forgettable (to annoying), the arrangements are clunky, lyrically it often teeters on embarrassing — I don't care how much you love "Karma Chameleon," the lyric is better suited for The Muppets. I remember everyone gushing... "Boy George has SUCH an AMAZING voice!" He's got a fine voice, but a singular, "drop everything you need to hear this!" voice? Take a look at the other artists on the top of the charts at the time... Pat Benetar, Sting, Lionel Richie, Donna Summer, Steve Perry... there were lots of incredible vocalists out there. And while Wham! was not my cup of tea, George Michael has that voice. I always took that as people feeling the need to explain why they liked this band — like they needed an excuse. In 1983, this was fine. Let a catchy, nonsensical song like "Karma Chameleon" play on the radio. There's a place for it, enjoy it for what it is. But to try to suggest this is something important — musically? It doesn't hold up.
Boy, that cover is the most Eighties thing that ever Eightiesed. This album did nothing for me. I tried to put my hatred of '80s production behind me, but so much of this album just sounds like the stuff you hear in dentist offices. Plus, on several songs, I felt like that backup singer was oddly mismatched to not only the music but she overpowered Boy George on several occasions. Still, a couple of songs were OK. And I certainly don't hate this music. I just find it very Eurovision. But thumb's up for Boy George pushing gender nonconformity 40 years ago.
I like Boy George as a person but always found Karma Chameleon, and Culture Club's musical output annoying as a kid. That hasn't changed. Obviously never listened to an album. The female singer with prominent backing vocals on a few tracks is the best bit. Reminds me of that Simply Red album I had to listen to in places. Most of the other stuff isn't as annoying, (although some of it is) and is fine I guess but it's not for me.
I've heard Karma Chameleon so many times. You could put a gun to my head and I couldn't name one other song by Culture Club. I was not born when this album came out so my first thought is that they're a one-hit wonder but maybe I'm wrong. Someone that was a teenager when this album released maybe heard several different Culture Club songs on the radio. After listening to the album it just reinforces my thought that they're a one-hit wonder. It's bland.
A slice of it's time that doesn't really hold up today - despite the best efforts of the much over-played opening track.
yet another totally unremarkable album that makes me think the listmaker just grabbed a few albums he had heard of from various genres that he doesn't know anything about (I am from the generation that made "Karma Chameleon" a hit, it's a fine song, but the idea that I must hear this album before I die is laughable)
Enjoyed it more than I expected but each song and the album definitely over stays it's welcome. Wouldn't listen to it again.
Sorta light and poppy as I remember. Backing singer is out of tune a lot.
Karma Chameleon is ridiculously fun, and reminds me of mornings before school watching pop up video. The album had a steep dropoff in quality after the opening track, I was looking to bail (probably from the experiment, possibly from this earthly plane) after That's The Way's depressing notes but then Church of the Poison Mind popped up and suddenly all was right with the world once again. The disparity between the energetic pop and sorrowful ballads is so interesting to me.
You wouldn’t think an album with such a dayglo cover would be so dull. Reminds me of Wham! which is not a compliment.
too pop for me, did not like it
karma chameleon carries the album so hard, most other songs are mid
Eh. It was fine, but didn't do anything for me. I didn't hate it, but I'd never choose to listen again. 2.25/5
The only song I know is, of course, Karma Chameleon and though it is an earworm, it's honestly quite boring. And that does for the rest of the album. A fine 80s pop album that's just sounds like a dull version of Michael Jackson. Highlights: It's A Miracle
Karma Chameleon is good, but the rest is soft bad 80's pop. Nah, dude.
Meh
Soild 80’s pop but not to my taste
Not in 1001, in my opinion.
Boy George, long hair and makeup included, was a huge cultural phenomenon. No doubt about it. The music, however, was always mediocre.
Not a bad album, but not a good album either. Just very very meh. "Karma Chameleon" is a classic track, though very overdone as a meme and I'm over it. Nothing else really stands out to me on the album.
This isn’t my kind of music at all. At the time I absolutely hated it, but now I can appreciated Boy George’s voice, however it’s still not something I’d want to listen to.
This is a pretty superfluous album. Ubiquitous 80s pop, and not of the remarkable sort. There are a couple of decent tracks but not enough to make this an album you MUST listen to. Boy George’s pioneering fashion seals a two star verdict.
