I can see how influential it was without ever needing another listen. I Know It's Over will likely remind me of a specific time of life, though.
I affirmatively dislike REM as a general principle, and Stipe's voice specifically. And yet it is clearly part of my subconscious because I am surprised that an album I could not name is part of my musical background. More moving/relevant/resonant than I would have otherwise expected.
When the highlights are the cameos and the instrumentals...
4 Leonard Cohen albums in my first 270 picks. I don't know what I did in a past life to deserve this, but I am deeply deeply sorry.
Are you familiar with Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On?" "Crown of Love" is like the opposite of that -- no one involved in making that song should be allowed to have sex again.
I get why people don't like this (the vibrato!!) and I don't entirely get why I do like this. But I do. Melodramatic, emotional, over the top, both sparse and baroque.
