I affirmatively dislike REM as a general principle, and Stipe's voice specifically. And yet it is clearly part of my subconscious because I am surprised that an album I could not name is part of my musical background. More moving/relevant/resonant than I would have otherwise expected.

Are you familiar with Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On?" "Crown of Love" is like the opposite of that -- no one involved in making that song should be allowed to have sex again.
I get why people don't like this (the vibrato!!) and I don't entirely get why I do like this. But I do. Melodramatic, emotional, over the top, both sparse and baroque.
